Ran is a childhood friend of [[Shinichi Kudo]]. She is the daughter of [[Kogoro Mouri]], a private detective, and [[Eri Kisaki]], a lawyer. Her parents separated when she was seven,<ref name="m2">[[The Fourteenth Target|Movie 2: The Fourteenth Target]]</ref> and one of her biggest goals is to get them back together. Her best friend besides Shinichi is her classmate [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]], who often teases her about her relationship with Shinichi.

Over a year before the series' start, Ran and Shinichi visited Shinichi's parents in New York. They met [[Yukiko Kudo|his mother]] and her actress friend, [[Sharon Vineyard]] (also known as Vermouth, a member of the [[Black Organization]]). Later that evening, Vermouth disguised as a serial killer to do BO work, and was saved by Ran and Shinichi who encountered her on their way back from a show-turned-murder case. Vermouth have fallen to her death, but Ran caught her arm and Shinichi helped her pull Vermouth to safety. == Personality ==
Ran's greatest personality trait is that she genuinely cares for those she loves. She is also patient, kind, and nurturing. Like Shinichi, she highly values justice to the point of idealism. To avoid making Shinichi choose between her and his important case (really an excuse because Shinichi has turned into Conan and can't return), she has decided to wait for him to finish it, trusting his promise that he will come back despite their separation causing Ran a lot of emotional pain. Ran is also very hot-blooded and tends to act on impulses when the people she cares about are involved; the combination of jumping to conclusions and not hesitating to use karate on those who she perceives to have wronged someone have led to several "near-miss" misunderstandings. Early on, she would become violently suspicious if she thought Shinichi was philandering, although more recently his confessions have lead her to trust his intentions.

Ran can be very brave and resourceful when she wants to be, and rescues Conan from trouble on occasion. However, she has an irrational fear of the supernatural and is thus—unlike her friend Sonoko—absolutely no fan of anything related to the horror genre.<ref name="e274">[[Truth About the Haunted House|Episode 274-275: Truth About the Haunted House]]</ref> She also constantly tries to reunite her father and mother again, though with little success, thanks to the mutual stubbornness of both parents. Ran is typically unaware of her attractiveness, and usually remains oblivious when men try to flirt with her, often to Sonoko's exasperation. If made aware, Ran doesn't respond in kind due to her feelings for Shinichi. Even though Ran is in love with Shinichi, she has repeatedly failed to convey her feelings because she suddenly becomes self conscious.

Ran is very self-sufficient for her age, since her father is often drunk, slovenly, and fiscally irresponsible. She handles many of the Mouri household's financial affairs and all the cooking and housework. She also ensures Kogoro doesn't slack off on his job, is on his best behavior for client meetings, and she often greets and provides refreshments for potential clients. She also appreciates fine art. Ran is a light-skinned girl of average height. She is slender in frame, yet sports an athletic and fairly curvaceous built. She has big blue eyes and dark brown hair. Her hair is straight and hip-length tucked behind her ears with short wavy bangs over her forehead. What was originally a wave in her bangs has evolved into a stylized triangular point as the manga has progressed.

== Abilities ==
Ran's most notable ability is her great prowess in martial arts; she is skilled enough in karate to win regional tournaments at the high-school level. == Plot overview ==
=== Doubts about Conan's identity ===
In time, Ran comes to suspect that Conan is actually Shinichi, despite what her common sense would say, but he always manages to trick her and prove her wrong. There are, however, occasions where she appears to be sure that Shinichi and Conan are one and the same.

The first time Ran suspects Conan is [[episode 7]]. After seeing how Conan, like Shinichi, can deduce someone's occupation by just touching the person's hand, Ran becomes very suspicious and keeps an eye on Conan during the whole case. However, Professor Agasa calls Ran with the voice changing bowtie at the end, freeing Conan of suspicion for a while.

[[The Cornered Famous Detective! Two Big Murder Cases|Another time]], when Ran finds Conan asleep on the sofa, she takes off his glasses and notices the striking resemblance he has to Shinichi as a child. She later confronts Conan about this resemblance, his similar powers of deduction, and even his shared lack of any musical knowledge. However, Shinichi's mother unexpectedly shows up and covers for Conan by explaining that Conan resembles Shinichi because they are distant relatives and that Conan possesses Shinichi's deductive ability because he admires Shinichi and learns from him.

Despite apologizing to Conan for doubting him, Ran does not lose her suspicions, but keeps them to herself for awhile.<ref>[[Volume 26|Volume 26, File 254: "An Infatuated Heart"]]</ref> [[The Desperate Revival|When Conan is critically injured]] and requires a blood donation, Ran donates her blood without hesitation, knowing she and Shinichi share the same rare blood type. Since this act proves Ran's suspicions are correct, with the help of [[Ai Haibara]], Conan manages to fool Ran by allowing Shinichi to appear before her while Conan (Ai Haibara in disguise) is present.

[[File:Ran_suspecting_Conan.jpg|thumb|left|200px|Ran suspecting Conan's identity]] In [[Ran's Suspicions]], Conan once forgets his cell phone on the couch and Ran, in the room at the time, remembers to send an email to Shinichi to let him know that she's going with her father on a case and that his presence would be most welcome as Kogoro could use the help. Right after sending the message, Conan's phone starts vibrating. Ran, quite perplexed by the perfect timing, checks his phone only to discover a new email (she hasn't seen the content yet). At that moment, Conan enters the room, and seeing his phone in Ran's hands, rushes towards it while shouting and grabs it back asking: "''Did you look?''". He quickly understands that Ran's email may have risen doubts about his identity.<ref name="e398">[[The Weird Family's Commission|Episode 398-399: The Weird Family's Commission]]</ref>

Following this event, Ran first believes that Shinichi often contacts Conan without her knowing, which would in some way explain how he always seems to help out on cases. Later on, after seeing Conan give an important clue to the investigation team without making use of his cell phone (to eventually contact Shinichi like she was suspecting), she starts to believe that Conan is actually Shinichi thinking that past occurrences of both being present at the same time was just a trick he used to fool her.<ref name="e398" />

At the end of the day, Ran is able to retrieve Conan's phone. Late at night, after waiting for everybody to go to bed, she tries to get past the phone's PIN code to check whether her email is there or not. This, to her, would be undeniable proof that Conan is indeed Shinichi. After finally guessing the number equivalent of "Sherlock" to be the PIN code, she's surprised not to see her email there. She instantly tries a few times to resend another email but nothing comes up on Conan's phone. That's when Shinichi calls her complaining about the numerous emails she's been sending. Conan, then knocks at the door and claims back his phone saying that he didn't want people looking inside because of messages he received from a girl he likes. It is later showed that Conan actually exchanged his phone with Agasa's (which are both of the same model) and used his phone upstairs to call Ran, while she was experimenting with the Professor's phone, to create this whole alibi. Shinichi then tells Ran that she now knows his phone number. And Ran, pleased with the situation, clears her mind out of all suspicions she had about Conan's identity<ref>[[Ran's Suspicions|Episode 400: Ran's Suspicions]]</ref> - at least, consciously.

During "[[The Whereabouts of the Embarrassing Charm]]" case we can see that Ran's suspicions are arising again. This is thanks to Heiji, openly revealed the fingerprint matching during the "Murder, Shinichi Kudo" case. Kazuha gave a likely, but not to Conan or Heiji, explanation on how Shinichi's fingerprints got onto the handcuff's piece of chain. However, for some reason Ran talked directly to Conan, which he pointed out that she is talking to the wrong person. Unconsciously she thinks she is talking to Shinichi.

In [[Volume 77|manga chapter 814]]/[[Yusaku_Kudo%27s_Cold_Case|Anime episode 690-691]] , Conan and the girls solve a case similar to one [[Yusaku Kudo]] abandoned 10 years ago. While explaining the solution, Conan talks so convincingly that Ran feels a strong impression that Shinichi is the one speaking. It unnerves her to the point where she stops Conan, but he states that he's only reading Shinichi's e-mail.

Ran recalls that she realized she loved Shinichi during their trip to New York together.<ref>[[Shinichi Kudo's New York Case|Episode 286-288: Shinichi Kudo's New York Case]]</ref> However, when Shinichi vanishes and Conan appears, her regard for Shinichi is mostly subsumed by her worry for his well-being. Conan tries to call her using his bowtie to impersonate his usual voice in order to allay her fears, but his long absence with no explanation other than a "tough case to solve" leaves her worried and hurt that even the times he does briefly appear, he vanishes before anything meaningful can be said. Shinichi also loves Ran and hates to see her hurt either emotionally or physically. Even as Conan he is very protective of her. For a long time, Shinichi has said nothing of his feelings so that his absence won't hurt Ran worse than it already does; he also wishes to tell Ran the truth about his identity but chooses her safety above their happiness.

Her constant hope is that they finally get together again, and on occasion she even plays (re-)matchmaker by arranging not-so-accidental meetings between them. However, while possible, any reunion has so far been constantly hampered by their mutual stubbornness as well as the occasional criminal incident taking place in the immediate vicinity.

==== Kazuha Toyama ====
Despite having rather different temperaments and personalities, Kazuha and Ran have several things in common, including: proficiency in a martial art, father's connection to police work and detective work, and detective-obsessed childhood love interests. Kazuha was initially cold and rude to Ran, suspecting her of being interested in Heiji. However, thanks to Kazuha's frankness and Ran's accommodating nature, the girls quickly overcame this misunderstanding. They have since become close friends and seem to regard each other as confidantes, since they are in similar romantic situations: Ran and Shinichi cannot confess their feelings for each other, as Shinichi is, aside from telephone calls, physically absent from her life, and Kazuha and Heiji cannot confess their feelings for each other due to their own stubbornness and irascibility. While Conan/Shinichi and Heiji are on cases together, Ran and Kazuha almost always spend the time together. When Kazuha visits the Mouris' in Tokyo with Heiji, she is shown to share Ran's bed.

[[Heiji]] acts brotherly toward Ran, at several occasions, he often called her "sister" (neechan in Japanese). Ran respects Heiji as a very skilled detective who reminds her of Shinichi, but whenever Heiji and Kazuha run into an argument, Ran seems to take Kazuha's side. Despite this, they have become very good friends.

At the beginning of the series, Shinichi is already well-known as a brilliant young detective, the "Savior of the police force", for solving many difficult cases the professionals could not.<ref name="e1" /> He is extremely intelligent, and even from a young age was very intuitive and observant. Shinichi has a striking resemblance to his father, Yusaku Kudo, sporting the same dark brown hair, slightly paled skin, and facial structures. He often appears in his high school uniform, but he also wears a suit and tie or regular clothing depending on the occasion.

He has a keen eye for details, and can spot any unusual aspects in a case that most people tend to ignore or not take into account. He repeatedly demonstrates the ability to recall every detail of an investigation or other topics he cares about, and may have a photographic memory to manage such perfect recall so consistently. Shinichi's fastidious attention to detail allows him to notice minor inconsistencies in crime scenes and suspect testimony, and using astute logic he uncovers the reasons behind those inconsistencies in order to link them to the crime. Shinichi has extraordinarily broad and deep knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases, something he likely acquired from incessant reading as a child. There are only few people like, [[Heiji]], [[Saguru]], and [[Kaito]], who are as intelligent as Shinichi.

Besides intelligence, Shinichi also has an amazing athletic ability, partially derived from playing soccer, his favorite sport. Shinichi is an extremely skilled soccer player, having been professionally scouted while only in middle school, but he chooses to stay at the amateur level. He initially played to hone his reflexes and often juggles a ball to clear his mind, but he is also an enthusiastic fan of the sport in its own right.<ref name="e1"/> In order to defend himself and others from criminals, Shinichi has perfected a signature, powerful precision kick to knock out criminals using soccer balls or whatever substitute is handy. Shinichi's kick is accurate over long distances and he is capable of mentally reckoning the angle of impact necessary to rebound a soccer ball off a wall and strike an attacker from behind. He is also good at skiing and snowboarding.

Aside from soccer, Shinichi exhibits a knack for handling firearms due to his father taking him to firing ranges from time to time. During the Clocktower Heist, Shinichi is able to shoot and dislodge the support beam of a giant projection screen, which Kaitou Kid had placed in order to fool a crowd of onlookers, with a single shot from a moving helicopter. Additionally, in [[Movie 2]] Conan shot a gun at Ran and the criminal holding her hostage with impeccable accuracy; in doing so, he reminds her of Shinichi.

Shinichi is nimble as well as strong. In the manga, he is capable of considerable acrobatics, jumping great distances and swinging from tree to tree to escape onlookers.<ref>Shiragami case</ref> The anime and movies augment Shinichi's athletic abilities in addition to what is shown in the manga. He has been able to skillfully dodge a kicking assault from an angry Ran, something very few have ever managed.

Because the main plot revolves around the fact that Shinichi has become 'Conan' and is forced into hiding, Shinichi is rarely in the series as himself. However, Conan is frequently shown calling Ran using his voice-changing bow tie to sound like Shinichi and sending/receiving text messages from her with "Shinichi's" phone. In these instances, it can be said that the character of Shinichi, albeit in the body of Conan, is appearing, since these phone conversations and text messages allow Shinichi to be himself, however briefly.

Ran seizes his hand while he is transforming back into Conan, and though Haibara knocks her out with Conan's wristwatch, she refuses to let go of his hand. [[Yusaku Kudo|Yusaku]] and [[Yukiko Kudo|Yukiko]] Kudo are both aware that [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] is in fact Shinichi. His parents are even more famous than he is, with Yusaku being a famous mystery novelist and Yukiko being a retired actress who remains partially involved in the industry. They currently live in the United States and travel extensively, having left Shinichi in Japan on his own when he was fourteen. Though he sometimes finds his parents' carefree ways to be annoying, he loves them dearly. Yusaku is also a detective with the same keen eye for details, and similarly to Holmes' brother Mycroft, Yusaku always seems to solve a case one step ahead of his son.

==== Hiroshi Agasa ====
Although not related by blood, there is a strong family-like bond between Shinichi and [[Hiroshi Agasa]]. Agasa was the first to know about Shinichi's shrunk predicament and was the one to tell him to keep it a secret. Most of the gadgets that Shinichi has were made by Agasa to help Shinichi catch the criminals and solve the cases as Conan. He also knows about Shinichi's romantic relationship with Ran and sometimes teases him about it in front of her (when Shinichi can't do anything about it since he is Conan).

==== Heiji Hattori ====
When they first meet, Conan and [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] seem bound to become lifelong rivals, especially after Kudo bests Heiji in their first case. Even though Heiji discovers Shinichi's secret, he decides to keep quiet (though he often slips up and calls him Kudo in front of others). After Heiji realizes the truth, the two have become best friends, and consult one another on cases, developments concerning the Black Organization, and even their "girlfriends". They have solved many cases together, and Heiji is the person Shinichi turns to for advice or for confirmation regarding a deduction. Heiji has, on several occasions, declared himself to be Shinichi's best friend or brother.

Heiji still maintains some of his original feelings of rivalry, and gets annoyed if anyone claims Shinichi is better (or even equal), and will often go to great lengths to show that the "west" (Osaka) is better than the "east" (Tokyo). Shinichi usually starts off acting like he is disinterested in the frivolous competition, but may then become competitive himself if Heiji starts "winning" or someone bruises his ego. Others, like Ran and Kazuha, see them both as equally skilled detectives.

This is because Yusaku created and thus was the '''father''' of the moniker [[Kaitou Kid|Kaitou '''Kid''']], Toichi's secret identity. Toichi's son and successor, [[Kaito Kuroba|Kaito]], has also only crossed paths with Shinichi as Shinichi once, during the [[The_Gathering_of_the_Detectives!_Kudo_Shinichi_vs._Kaitou_Kid|Clocktower heist]]. Kaito thought Shinichi made the heist harder (and thus less boring) in [[Saguru Hakuba]]'s absence, and Shinichi found Kid's intention of 'stealing' the Clocktower in order to save it from demolition to be fairly admirable.

In their next encounter, however, after Shinichi had become Conan, Kid disguised himself as Ran in order to steal the Suzuki Black Star pearl. When Conan cornered him on the Suzuki cruise ship, Kid suggested that he'd stolen all of Ran's clothes to impersonate her, and left her naked on the deck. While this ended up being a bluff, Conan was shocked and infuriated. In subsequent encounters between Kid and Conan, Conan displays a much more intense desire to capture Kid. In several instances he appears to be able to 'sense' Kid's presence; knowing Kid is close by often causes Conan to behave far more frenetically. However, in several instances, beginning with the "Big Adventure in the Eccentric Residence" case, when Kid does Conan/Shinichi a favor, such as saving Genta's life in the aforementioned case, Conan reciprocates by halting his investigation just shy of capturing Kid, thereby allowing him to escape unhindered.

[[Eisuke Hondou]], the younger brother of C.I.A. agent [[Hidemi Hondou]], also knows and keeps Conan's secret. [[Kaitou Kid]] also knows Conan's identity in the movies, though it is not clear whether he knows Conan's secret in the actual anime and manga. However, Kid seems to know there is something unusual about Conan, as whenever he tries to publicly steal he usually reveals that he only wants to compete with Conan as thief and detective. [[Ran]] gets suspicious on occasion, but so far Conan has managed to trick her into thinking Conan and Shinichi are two different people. Finally, [[Subaru Okiya]] has seen Conan use Shinichi's voice with his bowtie voice modifier. == Background ==
At the beginning of the [[Detective Conan]] series, Shinichi is a 16-year old<ref name="f2" /><ref>[[Volume_15#File_141_-_Gone.21.3F|Volume 15, File 141, page 12: "Gone!?"]]</ref> (17, according to the anime)<ref name="e3" /> student at Teitan High School who has become famous for helping the Tokyo police solve murder mysteries. One day, Shinichi brings his friend [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] to a local theme park called [[Tropical Land]], to celebrate her victory in the Metropolitan Karate Championships. == Personality ==
At the beginning of the series, Shinichi is already well-known as a brilliant young detective, the "Savior of the police force", for solving many difficult cases the professionals could not.<ref name="e1" /> He is extremely intelligent, and even from a young age was very intuitive and observant. Due to the influence of his father and the general laissez-faire environment at home, he has long been an incessant and persistent reader, especially of mystery novels.<ref name="f569">[[Volume 55#File 569 - The Mischievous Boy|Volume 55, Files 569-572: "The Mischievous Boy"]]</ref> His father, Yusaku started taking Shinichi to crime scenes as a child, which inspired him to be a detective.<ref>[[Volume 21#File 205 - Midair Sealed Chamber|Volume 21, File 205, pages 74-78: "Midair Sealed Chamber"]]</ref> Due to his bluntness and matter-of-fact manner, Shinichi can come off as rude and arrogant. Throughout the series, Shinichi's predicament forces him to gain a sense of humility.

Despite his popularity with the masses and his schoolmates, he has very few close friends. As Shinichi he was close to Ran and Agasa, and after deaging he befriended Heiji, Haibara, and to some extent the other Detective Boys. Despite his intelligence, Shinichi is rather dense when it comes to love or romantic subjects, though perhaps not to the same extent as [[Heiji Hattori]].

== Appearance ==
Shinichi has a striking resemblance to his father, Yusaku Kudo, sporting the same dark brown hair, slightly paled skin, and facial structures. The only traits he doesn't share with his father are the mustache and round glasses. The only physical feature he inherited from his mother, Yukiko Kudo, is his blue eyes. He often appears in his high school uniform, but he also wears a suit and tie or regular clothing depending on the occasion.

Shinichi is very skilled as a detective, often earning him comparisons to [[Sherlock Holmes]]. Shinichi has acquired various nicknames because of his prowess, such as the "[[Wikipedia:Heisei|Heisei]] Holmes" and the "Detective of the East". He has a keen eye for details, and can spot any unusual aspects in a case that most people tend to ignore or not take into account. He repeatedly demonstrates the ability to recall every detail of an investigation or other topics he cares about, and may have a photographic memory to manage such perfect recall so consistently. Shinichi's fastidious attention to detail allows him to notice minor inconsistencies in crime scenes and suspect testimony, and using astute logic he uncovers the reasons behind those inconsistencies in order to link them to the crime. Shinichi has extraordinarily broad and deep knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases, something he likely acquired from incessant reading as a child. There are only few people like, [[Heiji]], [[Saguru]], and [[Kaito]], who are as intelligent as Shinichi.

=== Athletic ability ===
Besides intelligence, Shinichi also has an amazing athletic ability, partially derived from playing soccer, his favorite sport. Shinichi is an extremely skilled soccer player, having been professionally scouted while only in middle school, but he chooses to stay at the amateur level. He initially played to hone his reflexes and often juggles a ball to clear his mind, but he is also an enthusiastic fan of the sport in its own right.<ref name="e1"/> In order to defend himself and others from criminals, Shinichi has perfected a signature, powerful precision kick to knock out criminals using soccer balls or whatever substitute is handy. Shinichi's kick is accurate over long distances and he is capable of mentally reckoning the angle of impact necessary to rebound a soccer ball off a wall and strike an attacker from behind. He is also good at skiing and snowboarding.

Aside from soccer, Shinichi exhibits a knack for handling firearms due to his father taking him to firing ranges from time to time. During the Clocktower Heist, Shinichi is able to shoot and dislodge the support beam of a giant projection screen, which Kaitou Kid had placed in order to fool a crowd of onlookers, with a single shot from a moving helicopter. Additionally, in [[Movie 2]] Conan shot a gun at Ran and the criminal holding her hostage with impeccable accuracy; in doing so, he reminds her of Shinichi.

Shinichi is nimble as well as strong. In the manga, he is capable of considerable acrobatics, jumping great distances and swinging from tree to tree to escape onlookers.<ref>Shiragami case</ref> The anime and movies augment Shinichi's athletic abilities in addition to what is shown in the manga. He has been able to skillfully dodge a kicking assault from an angry Ran, something very few have ever managed.

== Plot overview ==
Because the main plot revolves around the fact that Shinichi has become 'Conan' and is forced into hiding, Shinichi is rarely in the series as himself. However, Conan is frequently shown calling Ran using his voice-changing bow tie to sound like Shinichi and sending/receiving text messages from her with "Shinichi's" phone. In these instances, it can be said that the character of Shinichi, albeit in the body of Conan, is appearing, since these phone conversations and text messages allow Shinichi to be himself, however briefly.

Shinichi's next real appearance after shrinking is in [[Volume 10]], when a strange detective from Osaka named [[Heiji Hattori]] arrives at Mouri Detective Agency looking for Shinichi in order to determine which of them is the better detective. A strange combination of having a cold and drinking the [[baijiu]] that Heiji had brought along allows Conan to briefly grow into Shinichi once again.<ref>[[Volume 10#File 092 - The Great Detective Of The West|Volume 10, Files 92-96: "The Great Detective Of The West"]]</ref> However, he develops an immunity to the alcohol and cannot replicate the transformation.

==== Desperate Revival ====
In [[Volume 26]], Conan is able to become Shinichi using an [[Antidote (prototype)]] that [[Ai Haibara]] synthesized. As himself, he tries to surprise Ran by disguising himself as a character in her play, but is interrupted by a murder case and ends up revealing himself to his entire high school. [[Heiji Hattori]] covers for him and Shinichi is able to spend about 48 hours as himself, albeit with a brief collapse about halfway through. He turns back into Conan just as he seems to be about to confess his feelings to Ran.<ref>[[Volume 26#File 254 - An Infatuated Heart|Volume 26, Files 254-260: "An Infatuated Heart"]]</ref>

==== Shiragami case ====
Shinichi's next appearance is not until [[Volume 62]], when, while on a case with Heiji, Conan goes missing and 'Shinichi' seems to appear. The 'Shinichi' is actually someone who had gotten plastic surgery to look like Shinichi Kudo, and is actually trying to blame Shinichi for a murder. The real Shinichi hides in the forest until he can clear his name. Shinichi had been temporarily restored by another of Haibara's prototypes, but this time on accident; Agasa mistakenly gave them to Shinichi thinking they were cold medicine.<ref>[[Volume 62#File 646 - Village of Animosity|Volume 62, Files 646-651: "Village of Animosity"]]</ref> After the case is solved Shinichi transforms back to Conan, but luckily, Haibara secretly followed him there and gives him another antidote, saving him from revealing his identity to Kogoro, Ran and Kazuha. While driving home from the case, the group is stopped by another murder which Shinichi and Heiji investigate together, despite increasing pangs that warn of his imminent reversion to Conan. After the case is resolved, Ran tries to stop Shinichi from leaving, saying she has something to tell him. Shinichi stops her, saying "According to my deductions, what you have to say and what I have to say are the same thing." Ran seizes his hand while he is transforming back into Conan, and though Haibara knocks her out with Conan's wristwatch, she refuses to let go of his hand. Haibara and [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]] have to cut and re-pin Conan's shirt onto him because Ran is still clutching his hand and he refuses to pull out of her grip.<ref>[[Volume 62#File 652 - The Thing She Really Wants to Ask|Volumes 62-63, Files 652-654: "The Thing She Really Wants to Ask"]]</ref>

==== London ====
In [[Volume 71]], Conan, Ran, and Kogoro are invited to England by a rich, elite British woman, Diana Kingstone, after Kogoro finds her cat under the table in Poirot Cafe. However, since 'Conan Edogawa' doesn't have the proper credentials to fly internationally, Ai gives him a prototype pill so that Shinichi and Agasa can fly low-profile to England on the same plane that Ran and Kogoro are flying. Ai provides a second prototype pill for the return journey, but Conan uses it while Ran was pursuing him in London. During that trip, Shinichi answers Ran's hurt feelings over his behavior with the fact that he cares for her; unfortunately, before she could respond or confess in kind, Shinichi has to vanish and becomes Conan again. Luckily for Conan, Ai appears because she had expected him to waste the second pill, and she provides an extra antidote to let Conan return to Japan. <ref name="f743" />

In OVA 9, Conan takes another prototype antidote. However, it proves less effective than the prototype she used during the Desperate Revival arc; Conan became Shinichi, but only for a few hours, and remained in a feverish state, unable to wake up until he had reverted back to Conan. During his time unconscious, he had a vivid hallucination that he had grown to age 17 again as Conan and that Ran, aged 27, was about to marry [[Tomoaki Araide]].

Shinichi's initial disappearance troubled Ran to the point of insomnia and nearly going to the police. Since then, Shinichi sometimes calls Ran over the telephone and imitates his normal voice with the [[voice-changing bowtie]] so that she doesn't worry about him. [[Yusaku Kudo|Yusaku]] and [[Yukiko Kudo|Yukiko]] Kudo are both aware that [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] is in fact Shinichi. His parents are even more famous than he is, with Yusaku being a famous mystery novelist and Yukiko being a retired actress who remains partially involved in the industry. They currently live in the United States and travel extensively, having left Shinichi in Japan on his own when he was fourteen. Though he sometimes finds his parents' carefree ways to be annoying, he loves them dearly. Yusaku is also a detective with the same keen eye for details, and similarly to Holmes' brother Mycroft, Yusaku always seems to solve a case one step ahead of his son.

==== Hiroshi Agasa ====
Although not related by blood, there is a strong family-like bond between Shinichi and [[Hiroshi Agasa]]. Agasa was the first to know about Shinichi's shrunk predicament and was the one to tell him to keep it a secret. Most of the gadgets that Shinichi has were made by Agasa to help Shinichi catch the criminals and solve the cases as Conan. He also knows about Shinichi's romantic relationship with Ran and sometimes teases him about it in front of her (when Shinichi can't do anything about it since he is Conan).

==== Heiji Hattori ====
When they first meet, Conan and [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] seem bound to become lifelong rivals, especially after Kudo bests Heiji in their first case. Even though Heiji discovers Shinichi's secret, he decides to keep quiet (though he often slips up and calls him Kudo in front of others). After Heiji realizes the truth, the two have become best friends, and consult one another on cases, developments concerning the Black Organization, and even their "girlfriends". They have solved many cases together, and Heiji is the person Shinichi turns to for advice or for confirmation regarding a deduction. Heiji has, on several occasions, declared himself to be Shinichi's best friend or brother.

Heiji still maintains some of his original feelings of rivalry, and gets annoyed if anyone claims Shinichi is better (or even equal), and will often go to great lengths to show that the "west" (Osaka) is better than the "east" (Tokyo). Shinichi usually starts off acting like he is disinterested in the frivolous competition, but may then become competitive himself if Heiji starts "winning" or someone bruises his ego. Others, like Ran and Kazuha, see them both as equally skilled detectives.

So far, Shinichi did not canonically meet the detective boys before becoming Conan. In the non-canonical animated special, [[Magic File 2: The Case of the Mysterious Wall and the Black Lab|OVA Magic File 2]], four years prior to him becoming Conan, a thirteen-year-old Shinichi came across the Detective Boys, [[Genta Kojima|Genta]], [[Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya|Mitsuhiko]], and [[Ayumi Yoshida|Ayumi]], while they were still three years old. [[Ai Haibara]], a defector from the [[Black Organization]] who was shrunk with the same poison as Shinichi, is the third girl that seems to have somewhat romantic feelings for Conan/Shinichi, although she never truly admits it. Indeed, it is a mystery just exactly what she feels for him, whether friendship or otherwise. Some people, such as [[Yukiko Kudo|Conan's mother]] and [[Gin]], have stated that she has feelings for Conan. It could be said that, because of their almost equal level of intelligence as well as similarities in their pasts (i.e. they're both victims of the [[APTX 4869]]), she finds it easier to talk to him. Despite the fact [[Toichi Kuroba|Toichi]] and Shinichi only met once prior to Toichi's death, it's worth mentioning that Toichi referred to Shinichi as his "older brother" and himself as the "younger brother". This is because Yusaku created and thus was the '''father''' of the moniker [[Kaitou Kid|Kaitou '''Kid''']], Toichi's secret identity. Toichi's son and successor, [[Kaito Kuroba|Kaito]], has also only crossed paths with Shinichi as Shinichi once, during the [[The_Gathering_of_the_Detectives!_Kudo_Shinichi_vs._Kaitou_Kid|Clocktower heist]]. Kaito thought Shinichi made the heist harder (and thus less boring) in [[Saguru Hakuba]]'s absence, and Shinichi found Kid's intention of 'stealing' the Clocktower in order to save it from demolition to be fairly admirable.

In their next encounter, however, after Shinichi had become Conan, Kid disguised himself as Ran in order to steal the Suzuki Black Star pearl. When Conan cornered him on the Suzuki cruise ship, Kid suggested that he'd stolen all of Ran's clothes to impersonate her, and left her naked on the deck. While this ended up being a bluff, Conan was shocked and infuriated. In subsequent encounters between Kid and Conan, Conan displays a much more intense desire to capture Kid. In several instances he appears to be able to 'sense' Kid's presence; knowing Kid is close by often causes Conan to behave far more frenetically. However, in several instances, beginning with the "Big Adventure in the Eccentric Residence" case, when Kid does Conan/Shinichi a favor, such as saving Genta's life in the aforementioned case, Conan reciprocates by halting his investigation just shy of capturing Kid, thereby allowing him to escape unhindered.

There are only a few characters in the series who know Conan's real identity and none have betrayed Conan's identity to date. The main characters to know the secret are [[Hiroshi Agasa]], Conan's parents, [[Heiji Hattori]] and [[Ai Haibara]]. [[Vermouth]] also knows, but she has kept it a secret from the rest of the Organization to protect Shinichi because he had [[Vermouth_timeline#Golden_Apple_Case_.28Manga:_350-354.2C_Anime:_286-288.29|saved her life in New York]]. [[Eisuke Hondou]], the younger brother of C.I.A. agent [[Hidemi Hondou]], also knows and keeps Conan's secret. [[Kaitou Kid]] also knows Conan's identity in the movies, though it is not clear whether he knows Conan's secret in the actual anime and manga. However, Kid seems to know there is something unusual about Conan, as whenever he tries to publicly steal he usually reveals that he only wants to compete with Conan as thief and detective. [[Ran]] gets suspicious on occasion, but so far Conan has managed to trick her into thinking Conan and Shinichi are two different people. Finally, [[Subaru Okiya]] has seen Conan use Shinichi's voice with his bowtie voice modifier. Since Subaru Okiya is most likely a disguise of [[Shuichi Akai]], (as evidenced by the near perfect similarity of their eyes,) this means that Akai pretty much knows as well.

Ran is a childhood friend of [[Shinichi Kudo]]. She is the daughter of [[Kogoro Mouri]], a private detective, and [[Eri Kisaki]], a lawyer. Her parents separated when she was seven,<ref name="m2">[[The Fourteenth Target|Movie 2: The Fourteenth Target]]</ref> and one of her biggest goals is to get them back together. Her best friend besides Shinichi is her classmate [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]], who often teases her about her relationship with Shinichi.

Over a year before the series' start, Ran and Shinichi visited Shinichi's parents in New York. They met [[Yukiko Kudo|his mother]] and her actress friend, [[Sharon Vineyard]] (also known as Vermouth, a member of the [[Black Organization]]). Later that evening, Vermouth disguised as a serial killer to do BO work, and was saved by Ran and Shinichi who encountered her on their way back from a show-turned-murder case. Vermouth have fallen to her death, but Ran caught her arm and Shinichi helped her pull Vermouth to safety. Ran's greatest personality trait is that she genuinely cares for those she loves. She is also patient, kind, and nurturing. Like Shinichi, she highly values justice to the point of idealism. To avoid making Shinichi choose between her and his important case (really an excuse because Shinichi has turned into Conan and can't return), she has decided to wait for him to finish it, trusting his promise that he will come back despite their separation causing Ran a lot of emotional pain. Ran is also very hot-blooded and tends to act on impulses when the people she cares about are involved; the combination of jumping to conclusions and not hesitating to use karate on those who she perceives to have wronged someone have led to several "near-miss" misunderstandings. Early on, she would become violently suspicious if she thought Shinichi was philandering, although more recently his confessions have lead her to trust his intentions.

Ran can be very brave and resourceful when she wants to be, and rescues Conan from trouble on occasion. However, she has an irrational fear of the supernatural and is thus—unlike her friend Sonoko—absolutely no fan of anything related to the horror genre.<ref name="e274">[[Truth About the Haunted House|Episode 274-275: Truth About the Haunted House]]</ref> She also constantly tries to reunite her father and mother again, though with little success, thanks to the mutual stubbornness of both parents. Ran is typically unaware of her attractiveness, and usually remains oblivious when men try to flirt with her, often to Sonoko's exasperation. If made aware, Ran doesn't respond in kind due to her feelings for Shinichi. Even though Ran is in love with Shinichi, she has repeatedly failed to convey her feelings because she suddenly becomes self conscious.

Ran is very self-sufficient for her age, since her father is often drunk, slovenly, and fiscally irresponsible. She handles many of the Mouri household's financial affairs and all the cooking and housework. She also ensures Kogoro doesn't slack off on his job, is on his best behavior for client meetings, and she often greets and provides refreshments for potential clients. She also appreciates fine art. Ran is a light-skinned girl of average height. She is slender in frame, yet sports an athletic and fairly curvaceous built. She has big blue eyes and dark brown hair. Her hair is straight and hip-length tucked behind her ears with short wavy bangs over her forehead. What was originally a wave in her bangs has evolved into a stylized triangular point as the manga has progressed.

Ran's most notable ability is her great prowess in martial arts; she is skilled enough in karate to win regional tournaments at the high-school level. == Plot overview ==
=== Doubts about Conan's identity ===
In time, Ran comes to suspect that Conan is actually Shinichi, despite what her common sense would say, but he always manages to trick her and prove her wrong. There are, however, occasions where she appears to be sure that Shinichi and Conan are one and the same.

The first time Ran suspects Conan is [[episode 7]]. After seeing how Conan, like Shinichi, can deduce someone's occupation by just touching the person's hand, Ran becomes very suspicious and keeps an eye on Conan during the whole case. However, Professor Agasa calls Ran with the voice changing bowtie at the end, freeing Conan of suspicion for a while.

[[The Cornered Famous Detective! Two Big Murder Cases|Another time]], when Ran finds Conan asleep on the sofa, she takes off his glasses and notices the striking resemblance he has to Shinichi as a child. She later confronts Conan about this resemblance, his similar powers of deduction, and even his shared lack of any musical knowledge. However, Shinichi's mother unexpectedly shows up and covers for Conan by explaining that Conan resembles Shinichi because they are distant relatives and that Conan possesses Shinichi's deductive ability because he admires Shinichi and learns from him.

Despite apologizing to Conan for doubting him, Ran does not lose her suspicions, but keeps them to herself for awhile.<ref>[[Volume 26|Volume 26, File 254: "An Infatuated Heart"]]</ref> [[The Desperate Revival|When Conan is critically injured]] and requires a blood donation, Ran donates her blood without hesitation, knowing she and Shinichi share the same rare blood type. Since this act proves Ran's suspicions are correct, with the help of [[Ai Haibara]], Conan manages to fool Ran by allowing Shinichi to appear before her while Conan (Ai Haibara in disguise) is present.

Right after sending the message, Conan's phone starts vibrating. Ran, quite perplexed by the perfect timing, checks his phone only to discover a new email (she hasn't seen the content yet). At that moment, Conan enters the room, and seeing his phone in Ran's hands, rushes towards it while shouting and grabs it back asking: "''Did you look?''". He quickly understands that Ran's email may have risen doubts about his identity.<ref name="e398">[[The Weird Family's Commission|Episode 398-399: The Weird Family's Commission]]</ref>

Following this event, Ran first believes that Shinichi often contacts Conan without her knowing, which would in some way explain how he always seems to help out on cases. Later on, after seeing Conan give an important clue to the investigation team without making use of his cell phone (to eventually contact Shinichi like she was suspecting), she starts to believe that Conan is actually Shinichi thinking that past occurrences of both being present at the same time was just a trick he used to fool her.<ref name="e398" />

At the end of the day, Ran is able to retrieve Conan's phone. Late at night, after waiting for everybody to go to bed, she tries to get past the phone's PIN code to check whether her email is there or not. This, to her, would be undeniable proof that Conan is indeed Shinichi. After finally guessing the number equivalent of "Sherlock" to be the PIN code, she's surprised not to see her email there. She instantly tries a few times to resend another email but nothing comes up on Conan's phone. That's when Shinichi calls her complaining about the numerous emails she's been sending. Conan, then knocks at the door and claims back his phone saying that he didn't want people looking inside because of messages he received from a girl he likes. It is later showed that Conan actually exchanged his phone with Agasa's (which are both of the same model) and used his phone upstairs to call Ran, while she was experimenting with the Professor's phone, to create this whole alibi. Shinichi then tells Ran that she now knows his phone number. And Ran, pleased with the situation, clears her mind out of all suspicions she had about Conan's identity<ref>[[Ran's Suspicions|Episode 400: Ran's Suspicions]]</ref> - at least, consciously.

During "[[The Whereabouts of the Embarrassing Charm]]" case we can see that Ran's suspicions are arising again. This is thanks to Heiji, openly revealed the fingerprint matching during the "Murder, Shinichi Kudo" case. Kazuha gave a likely, but not to Conan or Heiji, explanation on how Shinichi's fingerprints got onto the handcuff's piece of chain. However, for some reason Ran talked directly to Conan, which he pointed out that she is talking to the wrong person. Unconsciously she thinks she is talking to Shinichi.

In [[Volume 77|manga chapter 814]]/[[Yusaku_Kudo%27s_Cold_Case|Anime episode 690-691]] , Conan and the girls solve a case similar to one [[Yusaku Kudo]] abandoned 10 years ago. While explaining the solution, Conan talks so convincingly that Ran feels a strong impression that Shinichi is the one speaking. It unnerves her to the point where she stops Conan, but he states that he's only reading Shinichi's e-mail.

However, thanks to Kazuha's frankness and Ran's accommodating nature, the girls quickly overcame this misunderstanding. They have since become close friends and seem to regard each other as confidantes, since they are in similar romantic situations: Ran and Shinichi cannot confess their feelings for each other, as Shinichi is, aside from telephone calls, physically absent from her life, and Kazuha and Heiji cannot confess their feelings for each other due to their own stubbornness and irascibility. While Conan/Shinichi and Heiji are on cases together, Ran and Kazuha almost always spend the time together. When Kazuha visits the Mouris' in Tokyo with Heiji, she is shown to share Ran's bed.

Ran is a childhood friend of [[Shinichi Kudo]]. She is the daughter of [[Kogoro Mouri]], a private detective, and [[Eri Kisaki]], a lawyer. Her parents separated when she was seven,<ref name="m2">[[The Fourteenth Target|Movie 2: The Fourteenth Target]]</ref> and one of her biggest goals is to get them back together. Her best friend besides Shinichi is her classmate [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]], who often teases her about her relationship with Shinichi.

Over a year before the series' start, Ran and Shinichi visited Shinichi's parents in New York. They met [[Yukiko Kudo|his mother]] and her actress friend, [[Sharon Vineyard]] (also known as Vermouth, a member of the [[Black Organization]]). Later that evening, Vermouth disguised as a serial killer to do BO work, and was saved by Ran and Shinichi who encountered her on their way back from a show-turned-murder case. Vermouth have fallen to her death, but Ran caught her arm and Shinichi helped her pull Vermouth to safety. == Personality ==
Ran's greatest personality trait is that she genuinely cares for those she loves. She is also patient, kind, and nurturing. Like Shinichi, she highly values justice to the point of idealism. To avoid making Shinichi choose between her and his important case (really an excuse because Shinichi has turned into Conan and can't return), she has decided to wait for him to finish it, trusting his promise that he will come back despite their separation causing Ran a lot of emotional pain. Ran is also very hot-blooded and tends to act on impulses when the people she cares about are involved; the combination of jumping to conclusions and not hesitating to use karate on those who she perceives to have wronged someone have led to several "near-miss" misunderstandings. Early on, she would become violently suspicious if she thought Shinichi was philandering, although more recently his confessions have lead her to trust his intentions.

Ran can be very brave and resourceful when she wants to be, and rescues Conan from trouble on occasion. However, she has an irrational fear of the supernatural and is thus—unlike her friend Sonoko—absolutely no fan of anything related to the horror genre.<ref name="e274">[[Truth About the Haunted House|Episode 274-275: Truth About the Haunted House]]</ref> She also constantly tries to reunite her father and mother again, though with little success, thanks to the mutual stubbornness of both parents. Even though Ran is in love with Shinichi, she has repeatedly failed to convey her feelings because she suddenly becomes self conscious.

Ran is very self-sufficient for her age, since her father is often drunk, slovenly, and fiscally irresponsible. She handles many of the Mouri household's financial affairs and all the cooking and housework. Ran is a light-skinned girl of average height. She is slender in frame, yet sports an athletic and fairly curvaceous built. She has big blue eyes and dark brown hair. Her hair is straight and hip-length tucked behind her ears with short wavy bangs over her forehead. What was originally a wave in her bangs has evolved into a stylized triangular point as the manga has progressed.

Ran's most notable ability is her great prowess in martial arts; she is skilled enough in karate to win regional tournaments at the high-school level. == Plot overview ==
=== Doubts about Conan's identity ===
In time, Ran comes to suspect that Conan is actually Shinichi, despite what her common sense would say, but he always manages to trick her and prove her wrong. There are, however, occasions where she appears to be sure that Shinichi and Conan are one and the same.

The first time Ran suspects Conan is [[episode 7]]. After seeing how Conan, like Shinichi, can deduce someone's occupation by just touching the person's hand, Ran becomes very suspicious and keeps an eye on Conan during the whole case. However, Professor Agasa calls Ran with the voice changing bowtie at the end, freeing Conan of suspicion for a while.

[[The Cornered Famous Detective! Two Big Murder Cases|Another time]], when Ran finds Conan asleep on the sofa, she takes off his glasses and notices the striking resemblance he has to Shinichi as a child. She later confronts Conan about this resemblance, his similar powers of deduction, and even his shared lack of any musical knowledge. However, Shinichi's mother unexpectedly shows up and covers for Conan by explaining that Conan resembles Shinichi because they are distant relatives and that Conan possesses Shinichi's deductive ability because he admires Shinichi and learns from him.

Despite apologizing to Conan for doubting him, Ran does not lose her suspicions, but keeps them to herself for awhile.<ref>[[Volume 26|Volume 26, File 254: "An Infatuated Heart"]]</ref> [[The Desperate Revival|When Conan is critically injured]] and requires a blood donation, Ran donates her blood without hesitation, knowing she and Shinichi share the same rare blood type. Since this act proves Ran's suspicions are correct, with the help of [[Ai Haibara]], Conan manages to fool Ran by allowing Shinichi to appear before her while Conan (Ai Haibara in disguise) is present.

[[File:Ran_suspecting_Conan.jpg|thumb|left|200px|Ran suspecting Conan's identity]] In [[Ran's Suspicions]], Conan once forgets his cell phone on the couch and Ran, in the room at the time, remembers to send an email to Shinichi to let him know that she's going with her father on a case and that his presence would be most welcome as Kogoro could use the help. Right after sending the message, Conan's phone starts vibrating. Ran, quite perplexed by the perfect timing, checks his phone only to discover a new email (she hasn't seen the content yet). At that moment, Conan enters the room, and seeing his phone in Ran's hands, rushes towards it while shouting and grabs it back asking: "''Did you look?''". He quickly understands that Ran's email may have risen doubts about his identity.<ref name="e398">[[The Weird Family's Commission|Episode 398-399: The Weird Family's Commission]]</ref>

Following this event, Ran first believes that Shinichi often contacts Conan without her knowing, which would in some way explain how he always seems to help out on cases. Later on, after seeing Conan give an important clue to the investigation team without making use of his cell phone (to eventually contact Shinichi like she was suspecting), she starts to believe that Conan is actually Shinichi thinking that past occurrences of both being present at the same time was just a trick he used to fool her.<ref name="e398" />

At the end of the day, Ran is able to retrieve Conan's phone. Late at night, after waiting for everybody to go to bed, she tries to get past the phone's PIN code to check whether her email is there or not. This, to her, would be undeniable proof that Conan is indeed Shinichi. After finally guessing the number equivalent of "Sherlock" to be the PIN code, she's surprised not to see her email there. She instantly tries a few times to resend another email but nothing comes up on Conan's phone. That's when Shinichi calls her complaining about the numerous emails she's been sending. Conan, then knocks at the door and claims back his phone saying that he didn't want people looking inside because of messages he received from a girl he likes. It is later showed that Conan actually exchanged his phone with Agasa's (which are both of the same model) and used his phone upstairs to call Ran, while she was experimenting with the Professor's phone, to create this whole alibi. Shinichi then tells Ran that she now knows his phone number. And Ran, pleased with the situation, clears her mind out of all suspicions she had about Conan's identity<ref>[[Ran's Suspicions|Episode 400: Ran's Suspicions]]</ref> - at least, consciously.

During "[[The Whereabouts of the Embarrassing Charm]]" case we can see that Ran's suspicions are arising again. This is thanks to Heiji, openly revealed the fingerprint matching during the "Murder, Shinichi Kudo" case. Kazuha gave a likely, but not to Conan or Heiji, explanation on how Shinichi's fingerprints got onto the handcuff's piece of chain. However, for some reason Ran talked directly to Conan, which he pointed out that she is talking to the wrong person. Unconsciously she thinks she is talking to Shinichi.

In [[Volume 77|manga chapter 814]]/[[Yusaku_Kudo%27s_Cold_Case|Anime episode 690-691]] , Conan and the girls solve a case similar to one [[Yusaku Kudo]] abandoned 10 years ago. While explaining the solution, Conan talks so convincingly that Ran feels a strong impression that Shinichi is the one speaking. It unnerves her to the point where she stops Conan, but he states that he's only reading Shinichi's e-mail.

However, while possible, any reunion has so far been constantly hampered by their mutual stubbornness as well as the occasional criminal incident taking place in the immediate vicinity.

Despite having rather different temperaments and personalities, Kazuha and Ran have several things in common, including: proficiency in a martial art, father's connection to police work and detective work, and detective-obsessed childhood love interests. Kazuha was initially cold and rude to Ran, suspecting her of being interested in Heiji. However, thanks to Kazuha's frankness and Ran's accommodating nature, the girls quickly overcame this misunderstanding. They have since become close friends and seem to regard each other as confidantes, since they are in similar romantic situations: Ran and Shinichi cannot confess their feelings for each other, as Shinichi is, aside from telephone calls, physically absent from her life, and Kazuha and Heiji cannot confess their feelings for each other due to their own stubbornness and irascibility. While Conan/Shinichi and Heiji are on cases together, Ran and Kazuha almost always spend the time together. When Kazuha visits the Mouris' in Tokyo with Heiji, she is shown to share Ran's bed.

[[Heiji]] acts brotherly toward Ran, at several occasions, he often called her "sister" (neechan in Japanese). Ran respects Heiji as a very skilled detective who reminds her of Shinichi, but whenever Heiji and Kazuha run into an argument, Ran seems to take Kazuha's side. Despite this, they have become very good friends.
