Conan finally deduces where the Blush Mermaid is. He decides to use "Sleeping Kogoro" to show everyone his explanation but he gets shook by Ran and the needle hits Sonoko whom Conan now has to use. Through her, he explains that the jewel never went anywhere but it was just made to vanish. He asks Kogoro to drop his lighter in the tank and to his surprise, it gets stuck on the plate of the tank which has a magnet. Kogoro and Nakamori question that how can the jewel get attracted to the magnet as gold and diamonds do not attract magnets. Conan solves this confusion by revealing that because the diamonds were synthetic. There is a solvent of iron mixed and not only that, apart from the magnet there is also glue and turtle feed on the plate which is why the turtle got stuck. As for where the turtle is Conan reveals that Jirokichi has it. When Nakamori questions him on why did he take his own jewel Conan explains that Jirokichi removed it and kept it with himself after he found a card from Kaitou Kid near his foot which threatened him to take the jewel and keep it with himself if he doesn't want anybody to know that he spent a fortune to buy it from an Italian actress.

While going back Conan privately exposes Kaitou Kid who is under the disguise of Masumi Sera. When Kid asks how did he know, Conan tells him that it was because of the magnet and that he was holding the magnet with him and the trick wouldn't work unless he split everyone into groups to do a body search. Conan also notes the fact that Kid was surprised when Ran and Sonoko wanted to group with him was because from above he thought Sera was a boy. When Kid surprisingly asks that Sera was a girl. Conan says yes but let Kid go because of the help he gave them during the mystery train case by disguising as Shiho Miyano. Conan comments that only he will forgive him and referring to Sera, who running in her underpants kicks Kid in the face but before she can catch him he escapes with his hang glider. Sera then tells them that she had gone to the men's restroom where Kid knocked her out with a stun-gun because the ladies room was filled and that she wanted to get it done. Conan secretly comments that he understands why Kid made a mistake. Sera then asks Ran whether she say any strange man when she picked up her hat to which Ran asks her why is the hat so special to her. She says that her "late brother" (referring to Shuichi Akai) used to wear hats like these and she is wearing them to copy Akai. She also comments on how the hat Ran found had the same wear of shape that he had in his hats but that there is no way it could be possible.

At the beginning of the movie, [[Ran]] has a flashback of [[Shinichi]] taking Ran to the fountain at [[Tropical Land]].

The movie quickly transitions to [[Conan]] calling Ran in a phone booth. After Ran asks Conan if he could come back to Tropical Land (thinking he is Shinichi), the [[Detective Boys]] cross his path, making a remark like, "It's not fun if he (Conan) isn't there", Conan quickly hangs up.

It is shown that the Detective Boys came up with a new riddle that they are confident that Conan cannot solve. However, Conan quickly solves the riddle. When [[Genta]] tries to cross the light, a policeman stops him, saying blinking green is the same as a red light. Conan and the rest wait for the next green light, but right when they are about to finish crossing, a mysterious man with an umbrella shoots the policeman in the booth. The man runs, and Conan gives chase, but loses him. When Conan asks the victim if he knew who shot him, the man grabs for his notebook, and fades away.

The Detective Boys are taken to a police conference because they were witnesses to tell them the details of the man. However, the conference goes nowhere as [[Ayumi Yoshida|Ayumi]], [[Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya|Mitsuhiko]], and Genta disagree on how the culprit looked. Ayumi claims the culprit was a middle aged man, Mitsuhiko claims the culprit was a young man with a black umbrella, and Genta says the culprit was a beautiful woman with a green umbrella. Conan later says that the culprit's raincoat and umbrella were both a shade of gray, and remembers the umbrella was in his/her right hand, showing that the culprit was left-handed.

Later, a woman finds a police officer, Youichiro Shiba murdered in a parking lot, who was holding his police notebook in his right hand.

The police, because of the similar conditions, are treating this as a serial killing. When the following morning [[Kogoro Mouri]] tries to ask [[Megure]] for more details, Megure hangs up, saying that he is busy. Kogoro notes that Inspector Megure is acting strange.

Megure is later shown talking to [[Shiratori]], saying that the information between the two cases must remain between them.

Shiratori's sister later has a party to bless her marriage. When Kogoro sees Megure again, he tries to get info, but the latter remains shut up. Conan realizes that Megure may know something that is kept confidential. Kogoro and Conan later try to blackmail [[Takagi]] using the info that Takagi likes [[Miwako Sato|Sato]]. Takagi tells Kogoro and Conan that the second victim held his notebook during his dying moments. However, Shiratori leads Takagi away, saying to Kogoro that this is as far along as he knows, and says, "Need not to know." Conan then deducts the culprit may have been part of the police.

[[Sonoko]] and Ran are shown asking Eri how she proposed to Kogoro.

Sato later goes to the bathroom, and Ran follows her. After that, an explosion occurs, knocking out the lights. The culprit appears and shields Ran from many bullets. The flashlight shows the culprit's face. Sato is shown unconscious, and Ran faints when she sees her blood-streaked hands, believing that Sato's injuries were the fault of her.

When Kogoro asks Megure for Sato's condition, Megure says a bullet stopped close to her heart, leaving a 50/50 chance of her survival. Sonoko later rushes into the room, saying Ran has regained consciousness, but is acting weird.

It is shown that Ran was struck with amnesia, and lost her memory of everybody she knew, including the memories of the current day. However, her brain was functioning normally. After this incident, Megure decides to leak the information about this case.

Megure starts by telling Kogoro of a surgeon named Jinno that was murdered.

The leader in the investigation squad was Tomonari; his subordinates were Narasawa, Shiba, and Sato. During the case, Tomonari suffers from a heart attack, but insists that no one worry, and to continue the stake out. Sato follows Tomonari, but he dies from a heart attack. When the remaining two see the targets, they notice that one of them is the Chief's son, Toshiya. Back then, the case was abruptly concluded as a suicide. The case reopened when the three subordinates were killed, with the exception of Sato, who was critically injured.

While Kogoro and Conan are looking over Ran, Conan comes to the conclusion that Ran may have witnessed the culprit's face, and mentions that Ran may be targeted.

Ran is later discharged from the hospital. When Ran tries to get out of the car, she seems to cower in fear because of a puddle. Kogoro reintroduces Ran to the house, but Ran seems to notice the picture of Shinichi. Kogoro, Conan, and Eri later try to regain Ran's memory.

The next day, the Detective Boys follow Ran around as guards. [[Haibara]] remarks that it may be better if Ran's memory wouldn't return. Ran seems to show a strange feeling when she sees Shinichi's picture. That night, Ran asks Conan about Shinichi.

The following day, Ran, Eri, and Conan are waiting at the subway station to go shopping. The culprit suddenly strikes and pushes Ran of onto the rails.

Conan barely manages to save her life. The doctor mentions that Ran may be scared to further regain her memory.

Conan later investigates the people related to Jinno, and finally realizes the culprit.

Ran is later taken to Tropical Land to help regain her memory. Ran has a flashback of Shinichi pressing the cola against her cheek. Takagi later goes to the bathroom, and a mascot character of Tropical Land suddenly walks towards Ran. At the moment, Detective Boys chase the person and take him down. Kogoro removed the mascot head and it is Makoto Tomonari. Kogoro also found the knife from his chest pocket. Tomonari was about to tell that he's not the murderer but it's too late. Takagi arrested him. The Detective Boys were celebrating for victory. Kogoro told Ran that he's going to the police station for questioning and also told her to stay at the Tropical Land until she regains her memory. Kogoro thanks the Detective Boys for saving his daughter, and they felt great about it.

At the police station, the police are questioning Tomonari. He reveals that he wasn't approaching to Ran. He wanted to talk to Kogoro for his help. He is innocent and the reason why he had the knife in his chest pocket is for his protection. That means the culprit is still out there. Kogoro is now worried about Ran.

In Tropical Land, the culprit later attacks Ran but Agasa protected Ran and got shot.

When the culprit later pins them down to a volcano, Conan reveals his deduction, and also reveals the culprit was the psychiatrist, '''Kyosuke Kazato''', who killed Jinno as revenge for having injured his hands to ruin his promising career, then kept killing to cover his leads -- which is why he wants Ran dead, as she managed to witness his last murder AND see his face clearly despite his efforts.

Conan and Ran then later escape down an escape hole. They run to a lava lake, where Ran asks Conan why is he protecting her. Conan replies that he loves Ran, more than anything in the world...

Conan later takes Ran to the fountain, the same place where Shinichi took Ran a long time ago, and Kazato finds them and starts shooting at Conan. Ran then finally breaks free of her amnesia upon seeing Conan in danger and recalling how Sato was shot to protect her; she loudly remarks on all of this and easily disables Kazato, turning him to the police. News later comes that Sato survived the surgery, and will be making a full recovery.

Dr. Kazato had a great and promising life as a surgeon until Dr. Jinno purposely cut his left wrist during an operation. Dr. Kazato being left handed quit being a surgeon because of his pride and switched to being a psychiatrist. He then attempted to be right handed person. He then met up with Jinno some time later and was invited inside his house. Dr. Kazato got drunk and asked if the incident was an accident. Dr. Jinno then smugly confessed. Dr. Kazato took advantage of the recent law suit against Dr. Jinno and killed him knowing it would be ruled as a suicide. Years later the case was reopened and Dr. Kazato killed all the people on the case. However Ran witnessed one of the murders and saw him. She had then gotten amnesia as an effect of blaming herself for the murder. Dr. Kazato then was assigned to take care of Ran. He began to target her. Conan realized this and saved her from getting run over by a train.

Ran tells Conan the line her dad told her mom he said to tell her that he loved her, leaving Conan (Shinichi) saying that he can't believe he used the same pick-up line as that stupid old man (Kogoro).

Conan finally deduces where the jewel is. He decides to use "Sleeping Kogoro" to show everyone his explanation but he gets shook by Ran and the needle hits Sonoko whom Conan now has to use. Through her, he explains that the jewel never went anywhere but it was just made to vanish. He asks Kogoro to drop his lighter in the tank and to his surprise, it gets stuck on the plate of the tank which has a magnet. Kogoro and Nakamori question that how can the jewel get attracted to the magnet as gold and diamonds do not attract magnets. Conan solves this confusion by revealing that because the diamonds were synthetic. There is a solvent of iron mixed and not only that, apart from the magnet there is also glue and turtle feed on the plate which is why the turtle got stuck. As for where the turtle is Conan reveals that Jirokichi. When Nakamori questions him on why did he take his own jewel Conan explains that Jirokichi removed it and kept it with himself after he found a card from Kaitou kid near his foot which threatened him to take the Jewel and keep it with himself if he doesn't want anybody to know that he spent a fortune to buy it from an Italian actress.

While going back Conan privately exposes Kaitou kid who is under the disguise of Masumi Sera. When Kid asks how did he know, Conan tells him that it was because the of the magnet and that he was holding the magnet with him and the trick wouldn't work unless he split everyone into groups to do a body search. Conan also notes the fact that Kid was surprised when Ran and Sonoko wanted to group with him was because from above he thought Sera was a boy. When kid surprisingly asks that Sera was a girl. Conan says yes but lets kid go because of the help he gave them during the mystery train by disguising as Shiho Miyano. Conan comments that only he will forgive him and referring to Sera, who running in her underpants kicks Kid in the face but before she can catch him he escapes with his hand glider. Sera then tells them that she had gone to the men's restroom where Kid knocked her out with a stun-gun because the ladies room was filled and that she wanted to get it done. Conan secretly comment's that he understands why kid made a mistake. Sera then asks Ran whether she say any strange man when she picked up her hat to which Ran asks her why is the hat so special to her. She says that her "late brother" (referring to Shuichi Akai) used to wear hats like these and she is wearing them to copy Akai. She also comments on how the hat ran found had the same wear of shape that he had in his hats but that there is no way it could be possible.

== Background ==
Kaito is a second-year student at Ekoda High School Class 2-B alongside his childhood friend [[Aoko Nakamori]], the witch [[Akako Koizumi]], and transfer student detective [[Saguru Hakuba]]. Kaito discovers his father's identity as the original [[Kaitou Kid]] after eight years following his death thanks to a secret room inside his house as well as talking with his father's attendant and friend, Konosuke Jii. Wanting to pick up where Jii left off, Kaito continues to be Kaitou Kid in an effort to lure out [[Magic Kaito Organization|his father's murderers]] by making Kid a world-famous thief once again.

Kaito as his normal self seems to be rather popular in school although he tends to get in trouble with the ladies, particularly Aoko, for flipping up their skirts or peeking on them in the locker room. He is a compulsive trickster who loves to demonstrate his magic tricks and share them with others, and hates to see people upset. == Plot overview ==

===Magic Kaito===
The day after the Kaitou Kid makes his return after an eight-year hiatus, Kaito stumbles through a trap door in his room and discovers that his father, [[Toichi Kuroba]], was the original Kaitou Kid. Kaito dons his father's costume to discover the identity of the new Kaitou Kid, revealed to be his father's old assistant [[Konosuke Jii]]. Jii tells Kaito that Toichi had been murdered eight years ago, and that he had dressed as the Kid and staged the heist in order to lure Toichi's killers.

So Kaito adopts the mantle of the Kid, having proven that he is more skilled than the aging and serious Jii. As the Kaitou Kid, Kaito stages several high-profile jewel heists with the intention of smoking out his father's killers (although he seems to be enjoying himself in the process). It isn't until the ''Blue Birthday'' heist that the murderers appear and reveal that they are searching for the doublet red-coloured gem [[Pandora]], said to shed tears of immortality during the passing of a particular comet. Since then, he has appeared in several Detective Conan cases. In other instances, Kid has staged heists when people such as [[Jirokichi Suzuki]] have called him out, or when criminals have used the Kaitou Kid's name to deflect blame from themselves, as in the Sunset Mansion case or the Seiran case. He also appeared in the Ryoma case to expose several counterfeiters who were pretending to possess items that another thief called the Phantom Lady had stolen years ago. A young Kaito also appeared in a flashback during which Conan recalled a riddle that he and Ran had tried to solve when they were in first grade. It turned out that the 'riddler' had been the original Kaitou Kid, [[Toichi Kuroba]], who seemed to be a friend of [[Yusaku Kudo]].

In chapter 824, Kid had played a significant role in main Detective Conan plot by disguising as Sherry under Conan's request. Their plan successfully tricked the Black Organization into believing she is dead.

In [[The Lost Ship in the Sky]], it's revealed that Kaito knew Conan's real identity of Shinichi Kudo. He helped Conan who was thrown out of the airship and they worked together to get back. Kaito has disguised himself as Shinichi three times, in [[The Last Wizard of the Century]], in [[Magician of the Silver Sky]], and in [[The Lost Ship in the Sky]] which led Sato and Takagi to suspect that Shinichi was Kaitou Kid. The two later share their suspicion with Heiji to which he responded with an 'Are you kidding me?' face.

:Kaito and [[Aoko Nakamori]] have been best friends since they were little and first met at the clock tower. They are portrayed as a similar pairing to [[Shinichi Kudo]] and [[Ran Mouri]] (including how the characters are drawn), except much sillier. Kaito often teases Aoko by flipping her skirt. However, it has been seen that Kaito is quite protective of Aoko and doesn't appear to want her to go on a date with [[Saguru Hakuba]]. Aoko was somewhat suspicious that Kaito was actually Kaitou Kid, and in order to prove his innocence, she brought him along to a movie when a heist had been scheduled. She handcuffed him to the seat, but Kaito managed to escape and pull off the heist, thus veering Aoko's suspicions away from him. The two appear to have feelings for each other, but neither has admitted it as of yet.

The relationship between Hakuba and Kaito is a rather tense one; since Hakuba convinced himself early on that Kaito was instead Kid, and during the first few volumes he's constantly throwing out offhand comments that show his suspicion. Ever since Kaito met Conan, Kaito always seems to be anticipating Conan's appearance at his heists. As he said before, Conan makes the heists so exciting, as both of them are geniuses, one is a thief who creates puzzles while the detective unravels them. Conan views Kaito's heists as entertainment, since the crimes and mysteries he solves are getting a bit boring.{{citation needed}} However, Kaito dislikes when Conan unravels his tricks before he demonstrates them or when Conan gives him payback for a particularly troublesome trick. Despite this, Conan and Kaito have a friendly rivalry. Kaito sometimes helps Conan whenever he's in trouble; Kaito has helped Conan solve crimes and protect Conan's friends. Conan sometimes lets Kaito escape for various reasons, never telling the police about him, though sometimes not before getting a little revenge. Conan once said that "If Kaitou Kid is to disappear, it would become boring", yet Conan also says he will be the one to catch Kaitou Kid, and put him behind the bars. In the manga and anime, Kaito knows Conan is far smarter than an average grade school boy, but it unclear if Kaito knows Conan is the shrunken teenage Shinichi. In the movies, Kaito knows Conan is Shinichi from the events of [[Movie 3]]. Both Conan and Kaito have nicknames for one another. "Great Detective-kun" is Kaito's nickname for Conan and "Kid" is Conan's nickname for Kaito.

After the death of Toichi, Jii lived by himself. Over the course of eight years, he grew angrier and angrier until he donned the costume of Kaitou Kid in order to lure out the organization that killed Toichi. He was only dressed as Kid twice before Kaito took over.

In both civilian and costumed life, Kaitou Kid is a compulsive trickster who is drawn to any challenge just for the sheer thrill of overcoming all hazards in the end. Kid is infamous for having a rather overconfident (close to the point of arrogance) attitude, always preferring to create as big a bang as possible. He loves nothing more then leading the police in wild goose chases, letting them get within a hair of catching him before exiting one way or another. Seemingly having a soft-spot for his fans, there has been more then one occasion when Kid has refused to show when the police tried to bar the general public from witnessing his act. Generally, when these instances occur, one of Kid's tricks rely, one way or another, on his ability to blend in with a crowd.

Kaitou Kid is also quite a charmer, seeming to always know just what to say to the ladies to leave them speechless. Kid hates to see others get hurt, and he never hesitates in leaping to rescue someone, whether physically or mentally. Despite his low reputation in some quarters, Kid does have a sense of honor, inasmuch as that he decides to leave the loot behind if it has no further purpose other than having challenged his trickster skills, doesn't contain Pandora, or when a more humane background stands behind their existence. These qualities are some of the reasons why he and [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] occasionally end up as allies in a common cause.

For some as yet unexplained reason, Kaito suffers from a severe case of ichthyophobia (fear of fish).

==Appearance==
Kid has dark brown hair with fringe that ends just above his eyes, but the rest of his hair is normally covered by a white top hat with a blue ribbon band. When dressed in his normal outfit, his right eye is covered by a white monocle that has a dangling green charm with a white clover imprinted on it. Kid's outfit consists of a white suit jacket on top of a blue shirt with a red tie and white dress slacks. The white [[Hang Glider Cape]] is attached to the jacket at Kid's shoulders. Kid wears blue socks with white Oxford style shoes with white soles. In his original appearances Kid wore white loafer type shoes.

Kid has been seen wearing black shirts and pants along with a black hat to help cover his face, usually when doing information gathering for heists or when he has his "audience" at his heists looking elsewhere. Apart from these two outfits, Kid is a master of disguise and has been seen disguising as several people throughout the course of ''Detective Conan'' and ''Magic Kaito''.

* Kaitou Kid was clearly modeled after the fictional gentleman thief Arsène Lupin, by French author Maurice Leblanc. In the French-speaking world, Lupin is as famous as Sherlock Holmes is in the English-speaking world. Akai is a very professional agent. Even in personal matters, he remains cool, even detached, from anyone, but his redeeming value is a great sense of loyalty to anyone he knows. He is a skilled and relentless pursuer and detective, qualities which have labeled him the number one enemy of the Black Organization and earned him the nickname "Silver Bullet". He looks forward to opportunities to hunt the Black Organization down and get revenge for Akemi. He also acts somewhat independently among the FBI and even his boss James Black has trouble getting ahold of him.

Akai does seem to get along well with Conan.

Akai is a tall man of Japanese descent with short wavy hair. His eyes have permanent bags underneath them that make him appear sleep deprived. Akai, like Gin is a heavy smoker, as in most of his appearances, he is shown smoking. Up to one year ago, he had very long waist length hair. The bus is hijacked by robbers demanding their boss be freed from prison and Conan discovers they must have an accomplice in the back row where Shuichi Akai is sitting. Akai becomes a suspect. After the boss is freed, the robbers call Akai and Araide up to the front to put on the hijackers' ski jackets. Conan ruins the hijackers' plans by directing the bus driver to slam on the brakes, sending the hijackers crashing to the floor. Akai keeps his footing and goes to attack one of the hijackers but is confused when the robber faceplants before he could strike: Conan's tranquilizer dart got him first. The police move in to apprehend the hijackers and Akai watches as Araide accosts Conan for wanting to leave before having the gash on his arm tended. Akai and James probably haven't met in a while because James doesn't know Akai cut his previously waist length hair. James is then mistakenly kidnapped by criminals who plan to ransom him. Akai, looking for James Black, drives past the Detective Boys. A prior member of the Black Organization, Akai's gaze triggers Haibara's senses, and she whips around asking if Conan saw who was driving the Chevrolet truck.

Somehow, Akai figures out where James is and catches up to the kidnappers' fake police car and begins following it. Akai quickly zooms ahead when Conan and the police arrange for an army of police cars to box in the kidnappers' car to force it to stop. Akai drives by Agasa's car and looks in, and Conan shields Haibara from his view. In the confusion of the aftermath, James leaves with Akai before he could be questioned by police. James retells the events of the kidnapping and asks if Akai brought him to Japan to "make (Akai's) lover come back to (Akai)" Akai affirms this and says that he wants "his lover (koibito) to regret they ever left me with tears of blood."<ref name=327p18>Manga Volume 32, File 10, page 18: "A Stupid Plan"</ref>. Akai's "lover" is a reference to the ironic codename he gave Gin: "koibito" meaning lover. They continue to wait in the film developer's parking lot until Takagi asks them if they have been drinking at Conan's request. They report to Akai that they are unable to follow any more. Akai looks at the newly developed pictures they gave to him and he thinks Haibara's resemblance to Shiho Miyano is too similar to ignore.

Agasa calls Araide to pick up Haibara, and Akai overhears the conversation through the bugs planted in Araide's office. He follows Jodie and Araide to Agasa's house and waits out front listening in to the bugs Jodie just planted at Agasa's.

Conan and Jodie confront Vermouth and reveal her disguise. During the confrontation, Jodie is shot by [[Calvados]], a sniper who was hidden on some shipping crates. Calvados also attempts to shoot Ran who rushed to Haibara in order to shield her from the gunfire. Akai, unseen, sneaks from behind and disables Calvados, silently breaking both his legs and taking his rifle, shotgun, and three pistols. Akai walks around the shipping crates towards Jodie and Vermouth's location. Vermouth mistakes the incoming footsteps for Calvados and orders him to kill Jodie. Vermouth is shocked when it is Akai who walks into view. Akai tauntingly comments that [[Calvados]], a liquor made from apples, matches Vermouth's FBI codename "Rotten Apple". Provoked by his remark, Vermouth attempts to shoot him, but Akai fires the shotgun first into her flak jacket, breaking several of her ribs and tearing Vermouth's face slightly which proves that she isn't wearing a mask. To escape, Vermouth grabs the unconscious Conan as a hostage and roars away in Jodie's car. To prevent them from following, she aims with the side mirror and shoots Araide's car's gas tank, causing it to explode.

Akai comments that they at least have her accomplice Calvados, but at that moment, Calvados commits suicide with a pocket pistol that Akai overlooked. Akai hears the police sirens and tells Jodie to make up a story about randomly getting involved in a kidnapping case. Akai's parting words to Jodie are that he still isn't ready to face Haibara, likely referring to his use of Haibara's sister, [[Akemi Miyano]], to infiltrate the Black Organization which resulted in her being killed when they uncovered that he was a spy.

Kogoro Mouri, Ran, and Conan help newscaster [[Rena Mizunashi]] with a door bell prank case. In order to catch the prankster, Conan sticks a bug and microphone wrapped in gum outside the door. The case is solved, but Conan forgets the bug and it gets stuck on Rena's shoe. Unfortunately Conan discovers Rena is a member of the Black Organization, [[Kir]], and she is participating in an [[Black Organization#Domon Yasudera|assassination mission]]. Conan has to retrieve the tracker before the Black Organization notices and suspects that Kogoro planted it. Jodie Starling contacts Akai and tells him about the predicament, but doesn't say what he will do to help. James Black comments that Akai was always the reticent type, but has closed up even more since the death of his girlfriend (later revealed to be [[Akemi Miyano]]).

After hearing a lot of static on their radios, Gin looks for the cause of the interference and finds Conan's tracker on Kir's shoe which had been left in his car when she changed clothes. With the boss's approval, Gin abandons the original assassination plans and heads towards the Mouri Detective Agency to kill Kogoro. Conan stops Kogoro from being assassinated, but Gin still has Conan's tracker which has his fingerprints on it. As Gin holds it up for a closer look, it is shot out from between his fingers by Akai who had set up with a sniper rifle on a building 700 yards away.

Gin, perhaps anticipating who would be responsible, grabs Korn's rifle and uses it to locate Shuichi Akai. At this time, Akai fires a bullet that passes through Gin's scope and grazes his left cheek causing it to bleed. At this time Akai says "we finally meet, my lovely, lovely koibito-san".<ref name=504p14>Manga Volume 49, File 4, pg 14: Black Organization vs. FBI 2</ref> Gosho Aoyama uses a Japanese literary device to give the word "koibito" a double meaning. Japanese in Detective Conan includes the pronunciation, called "[[wiki:furigana|furigana]]", in [[wiki:hiragana|hiragana]] next to the [[wiki:kanji|kanji]]. Normally the furigana matches the word in the kanji; however, Gosho Aoyama used the kanji for "old enemy" (宿敵), but the furigana for "koibito" (こいびと), giving Akai's word a double meaning. The true meaning of what Akai meant is "old enemy", but what he said out loud was the furigana "koibito". Akai had ironically nicknamed Gin "loved one" despite thinking of him as his arch enemy. By grazing Gin's cheek, Akai fulfilled his promise he made at the end of the James Black Kidnapping to make his "lover" bleed tears of blood.

Akai then fired twice into Gin's bullet proof vest to encourage him to leave quietly, purposefully avoiding killing Gin although he was capable of finishing him. Akai's stated reason for letting Gin and the rest of the Black Organization members go was to avoid having a gunfight erupt in the middle of Beika city where innocent people might be injured.<ref name=504p17>Manga Volume 49, File 4, pg 17: Black Organization vs. FBI 2</ref> Despite Gin's reservations, Akai also successfully made the Black Organization think that the FBI was behind the tracker, and that Kogoro had been the bait to draw them into Akai's range.

Eventually, following the capture of Organization member [[Hidemi Hondou|Rena Mizunashi]], Akai was introduced to Conan, and the two worked on a plan to re-introduce Rena, who was in fact a CIA mole, back into the ranks of the Organization. One condition of her reintegration, however, was that she should personally kill Akai, who had been declared the Organization's most dangerous enemy. Mizunashi lured him to an isolated spot for a meeting and shot him at point-blank range before incinerating his truck with a bomb.

After hearing that [[Eisuke]] has zeroed in on Haido Central Hospital after finding a clue, Conan and Jodie discuss [[Ethan Hondou]]. Jodie says Akai verified Ethan Hondou was a CIA agent. Conan asks Ran more about the clue Eisuke found and discovers that it was someone dialing the [[Anokata|Black Organization's boss's phone number]]. Jodie reports to Akai that a member of the Black Organization has infiltrated the hospital. Akai takes the news in stride and goes to Rena's room. He already suspects Rena is a member of the CIA as well, and wants to use her to gain more leverage against the Organization.

Conan asks one of the nurses about Eisuke and she tells Conan about a different patient, a member of the Black Organization, who had asked about Rena Mizunashi. Akai seems pleased to hear the news, and thinks it is a good opportunity to add a second lead. The FBI gets profiles of three patients most likely to be the Black Organization member and Conan films them. Akai and Conan both correctly deduce the member of the Black Organization hiding in the hospital is [[Kusuda Rikumichi]]. The FBI watch Kusuda, but get caught and he threatens to blow up a bomb. Kusuda escapes in a car with Akai and Conan in hot pursuit. After realizing it is Akai who is chasing him, Kusuda commits suicide. Akai knows that now Kusuda's reports have stopped, the Black Organization will know Rena is at the Haido Central Hospital and plan a counter-attack.

The FBI hold a meeting and decide that they have to move Kir now that the Black Organization knows she is at Haido Central Hospital. Akai proposes that the best idea is to set a trap for the Organization by allowing them to come after Kir and then ambushing them. Akai heads to the roof alone to think of a plan. Conan takes the opportunity to ask James Black about Akai's past. James reveals that Akai wants revenge for his girlfriend who was killed by the Organization. Akai had infiltrated the Organization under the name Dai Moroboshi by dating Miyano Akemi in order to get close to a [[Sherry|high ranking scientist]], feed information to the FBI, and hopefully learn the identity of [[anokata|the boss]].<ref>Manga Chapter 599: Akai's Past</ref> Dai earned the codename "Rye" and was called to work for [[Gin]], but the FBI bungled the plan to capture Gin, so Akai was discovered and expelled from the Organization. James Black further explains that the Organization wanted to get rid of Akemi too, but couldn't because her sister was too valuable to them. The Organization came up with a plan to have Akemi perform [[Volume_2#File_013_-_The_Missing_Man|a billion yen bank heist]] as an excuse to kill her when she failed. Contrary to the Org's expectations, Akemi succeeded but was killed by Gin regardless. Akai has kept the last text message from Akemi asking if Akai will date her for real if she leaves the Organization. There is a further P.S. that has not been revealed.

Conan and Akai meet on the roof and exchange plans. Their first move is to get Kir's cooperation. Akai and Conan trick the FBI officers on guard to leave Kir's room which provides an opportunity for Eisuke to sneak in and "wake the sleeping princess". With Eisuke's provocation, Kir stops pretending that she is unconscious. Conan and Akai enter the room, and Akai escorts Eisuke out so that they can convince Kir to return to Organization. Akai and Conan answer Kir's questions about how they found out she was a CIA agent and she fills them in on her past. Kir agrees to their plan to trick the Organization and promises to funnel information back to the FBI as well. Akai calls [[Andre Camel]] to help with their secret plan which requires also fooling the FBI who don't yet know Kir is a CIA agent.

The FBI plans to put Rena in one of three vans and trick the Organization into chasing one of the decoys while the van with Kir in it is driven by Camel back to hospital. Meanwhile, the Organization launches their counterattack. They cause three separate accidents nearby to flood the hospital with people and then give them gifts with small bombs hidden inside. Akai suspects they may be trying to kill Kir by detonating the bombs and collapsing the hospital. Akai and the FBI collect the bombs from the innocent patients, but are startled when the TV starts airing an announcement from Mizunashi Rena in the hospital. Akai and Conan realize the bombs have tracking devices embedded in them, but they aren't fast enough to stop the rest of the FBI agents from going to Kir's room.

With the location of Kir's room exposed, the FBI launch the three van plan without delay. Akai in his Chevrolet follows one of the vans from a distance and he is eventually found by Vermouth who had been assigned by the boss to look for him. Gin correctly deduces which van Kir is in and recaptures her all according to Conan and Akai's plan. The FBI are at first very dismayed they failed, but then Akai explains the plan to them and that they were left out of the loop in order to make the Organization believe they were not set up. Gin, however, is suspicious that Akai didn't interfere more strongly when they recaptured Kir and that Akai may have something else up his sleeve.

Gin is suspicious of how ineffective the FBI's plan was and that Akai didn't make a strong move. Gin thinks Akai is still hiding something and that doubt is relayed to [[anokata|the boss]] who plans a test of Kir's loyalty. Meanwhile, [[Andre Camel]] becomes a suspect in a coincidental murder case. Akai is somewhat amused at the predicament, and Jodie plans to go to Andre Camel and bail him out. As Jodie leaves, Akai calls out to her and says he has a bad feeling about today, and that she should be careful. Jodie notes it is Friday the thirteenth.

The Black Organization takes advantage of the distraction provided by Andre Camel's murder case, and Gin meets with Kir and conveys [[anokata|the boss's]] ultimatum: Kir must kill Akai in order to regain the Organization's trust. Gin explains that Kir will call out Akai with the excuse that she wants to flee the country because the Organization is pressuring her after she was caught by the FBI. Akai will take the bait if Kir says she will give him good information. When she meets with him alone, Kir will kill Akai while wearing a camera and bug. Gin will be watching out of range of Akai's acute sense for traps. With Gin's gun at her back, Kir calls Akai.

At the murder case, Jodie meets up with Camel and their discussion turns to Camel's mistake which caused Akai to be rejected from the Organization two years ago. Camel explains that Akai had just been promoted, and the FBI planned to capture Gin who was set to meet with Akai. The FBI hid in the warehouse waiting for Gin, but instead an old man walked in and sat down. Akai ignored the old man, but Camel came out from hiding and told the old man to leave. The old man turned out to be a member of the Organization, and Gin never showed. This lead to a chain of events leading to Akai's girlfriend [[Miyano Akemi]]'s death almost two years later. Camel, who felt most responsible, felt obligated to take the role of driver for the plan to return Kir.

Meanwhile Akai, sitting in his truck, remembers some of the last moments he had with Akemi. Akai revealed to her that he was an FBI agent. She seemed to already know, prompting Akai to desperately ask her why she didn't get away from him. Akemi's simple tearful reply was, "Can't you tell without asking?" Akai is brought back to present by [[James Black]] telling him that his phone is ringing. Kir is on the other end, and relays Gin's concocted story and asks to meet Akai alone. James's impression is that the meeting with Rena is likely a trap and that Akai shouldn't go. Akai confidently says that he is sure his sixth sense will work and that he will trust Rena to have some way out of the situation. James starts to call Jodie as support but, the confidently grinning Akai stops James from dialing and asks for his trust. The meeting location is set at 19:00 at the seventh left curve of Raiha falls and Akai heads out.

Akai arrives at the meeting place where Kir is waiting from the other side after scouting out ahead. Kir shoots Akai in the lung as Gin and Vodka watch from across the gorge via Kir's collar camera. Blood trickling from his mouth, Akai turns and sees their Porsche and smirks to himself. Kir tells Gin he will die soon from the lung shot, but Gin orders that Kir makes his death certain by shooting Akai in the head. As Kir walks up to him, Akai seems to accept his impending doom with great calm.<ref>Manga Chapters 605-608: Foreign Suspect Case</ref> After some last words, Kir shoots Akai in the forehead. Blood cascading from both sides of his head, Akai collapses in the front seat of his truck. At that moment the police on the way to an accident begin to approach and Gin orders Kir to place a bomb and blow Akai's truck up with the body. Kir plants the bomb and leaves. It detonates just as the police pass by. The ensuing explosion and fire destroys most of the body but the right hand fingerprints survive.

Jodie and Camel leave the murder case as the police finish wrapping it up return the the hospital where the FBI meet. James announces that Kir set up a meeting alone with Akai and the a news program begins reporting on a truck that exploded with a body inside whose right hand fingerprints remain intact. Jodie wonders if it is Akai, and takes Conan's phone which Akai had touched earlier with his right hand to the police. The fingerprint results are a match, Jodie reports the news to James and then breaks down crying.

===== Faked Death? =====

Several abnormalities surrounding Akai's death invite the possibility that Akai faked his death with Conan and Mizunashi Rena's help. Inconsistent details like disappearing blood trails are evidence Akai's body was tampered with by someone other than Kir, and Conan's reaction to the news of Akai's death is suspiciously subdued. The theory is that Akai's death was faked by using blank cartridges and blood packets with small detonators to simulate gunshots. When Kir moves to the front of Akai's truck to prepare the bomb, it creates a gap of time where Gin and Vodka cannot see Akai's body with Kir's camera. At this time, Akai switches places with [[Rikumichi Kusuda]]'s body which had been dressed up beforehand to look like Akai. Akai escapes the truck before it explodes. Meanwhile Conan's will loan Jodie Starling one of his identical cellphones which has Rikumichi's fingerprints on it. She will think they are Akai's and when she goes to validate the identity of the body with the police, it will match Rikumichi's fingerprints and she will be fooled into thinking Akai died.

Shuichi originally met [[Akemi Miyano]] by accident. She accidentally hit him with her car when he was walking in the street. Akemi was concerned over this, and helped take him to the hospital, watching over him until he was better. When he woke up, he felt no anger over what she did, and even asked for her name, to which a very flustered Akemi told him her name, while he told her his fake name: Dai Moroboshi. After this, both of them discovered they were in the Black Organization, and began dating. However, for Akai, there was a catch involved. To the FBI, Akai's relationship was merely a stepping stone, something to use to take advantage of the Black Organization, and to get information. However, as [[James Black]] later recalls, Akai had begun to fall in love with Akemi, and consider her his real girlfriend.

In Akemi's heart, she always felt that Akai (Dai), really wasn't who he seemed to be. Later, due to a massive error by [[Andre Camel]], Akai is discovered to be an FBI agent, leading to his exile from the Black Organization. When Akemi discovers this, she runs to him in tears, sad and angry, and afraid that Akai really had only used her to get information on the Black Organization. When Akai asks her why she never said anything about her suspicions before, Akemi basically hints it is because she loves him. After this, Akemi and Akai don't hear from each other for a long while, and Akemi's role in the Black Organization dwindles because they believe that she gave information about the Black Organization to Akai. After the successful bank heist, she is killed by the Black Organization. However, on the day of the heist, Akemi sent Akai a long text message, tell him that after the heist, when she is finally free from the Black Organization, if he wants to be her real boyfriend. Akai is never able to answer this, as she is killed by [[Gin]]. Akai treasures this text message, and it was even still in his phone, many months after Akemi's death. The message also contains a P.S. which is not revealed yet.

While Jodie and Akai's relationship had been viewed as mere colleagues, it is revealed later on in the series that Jodie and Akai had dated before about 5 years prior. However, after Akai infiltrated the Black Organization under the alias of Dai Moroboshi, he started dating Akemi Miyano in hopes of using her to attain information about the Black Organization. Despite this, Akai ended up falling in love with Akemi, leading him to break up with Jodie, stating that, "To be able to love two women at the same time…it’s not that handy a personality." In spite of the break-up, Jodie still held strong feelings for Akai which never wavered as time passed and took his apparent death at Kir's hands especially hard, to the point of being reduced to tears.

When Haibara first met Akai, she thought he was a member of the Black Organization. Akai seems to know of Haibara's identity.
