Because of Mouri's love for horses, he takes Conan and Ran to an OK corral ranch. One of their prize winning horses gets spooked and they all go running after her. They reach the horse and Conan finds blood on her horseshoe. They then find the farrier; one who shoes the horses, murdered.

They find out that the farrier, had been meeting with a businessman who wanted to buy and ruin breeding any more horses that would save the ranch. Conan deduces that it wasn't an accident and that someone gave the horse chocolate which is stimulant for horses. But it wasn't the cause for the death and was a cover-up for the real criminal. The criminal is '''Hirohito Ninomiya''' and Okusu was the one who's covering for him. The murder weapon was the horseshoe that the person in haste put on wrong. Hirohito confesses and had killed the farrier accidentally in self-defense.

Kogoro Mouri gets an invitation for an engagement party from his favorite idol, Yoko Okino. Kaoru is the one who is getting engaged is another star and a former member of a group they all used to be in. She is a fan of Kogoro Mouri and wanted him to find out who was stalking her. Kaoru decides to take a bath. And the rest of the girl group decide to dress up and sing their old song to surprise her. Conan discovers blood leading to the door and they find her attacked. Bloody clothes are found outside which were made to make it seem like it was Kaoru's stalker but really is someone at the party.

The hospital calls and informs them that Kaoru's surgery went well. Meanwhile, Conan confronts the culprit, '''Yuki Takeno''', Yuki used her sharp filed nail as a weapon and used a fake nail to cover it. Her motive is that she has crush on Kenzaki and she thought that the fake engagement was just Kaoru playing prank on her emotion. She attempted to commit suicide to pay for her crime of trying to kill Kaoru with hypoglycemic drug, but Conan saved her life using sugar sticks. When Yuki woke up in the hospital Kaoru said that she testified wrongly to cover for Yuki and felt sorry that she wasn't aware of Yuki's crush on Kenzaki. Kaoru revealed that the rumor of the engagement was to get her manager to have enough courage to confess her and later they become engaged(Kaoru wants to get married at age 20 like Yukiko Kudo). It is later revealed that Terumi has idolized Shinichi.

[[Yukiko Kudo|Yukiko]] brings [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]], [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]], and the [[Detective Boys]] to watch a Kamen Yaiba movie preview. Once there, they find out the movie has been delayed to later that night. Yukiko having to leave to catch her flight to America, leaves the kids in the care of Akira Hojima, one of the four employees of the Kamen Yaiba film. Before leaving, Yukiko tells Conan to be careful of the black car that has been following them. Akira takes the kids to his apartments near the studio and invites his fellow employees to a game of Mahjong. While everyone is asleep, they are awakened by a scream and find the salesman Norihiro Furumura murdered with a kitchen knife.

The police investigate and find that Furumura's camera was turned on during the attack and reveals no suspicious sound was made. While the police suspect Akira to be the murderer, it is revealed that Akira and his two fellow employees have motives on murdering Furumura; Furumura ruined their previous film due to his careless handling of the negatives causing them a great loss in money to re-film the ruined sections.

Later that day, the culprit returns to Akira's apartment to return the missing button. The police and Agasa appear revealing it was a set up to reveal the culprit to be the employee '''Yoshihiko Negami'''. Conan using his voice changing bow-tie voices through Agasa that Yoshikiko using fluorescent tape was able to cross the messy room quietly and with fluorescent paint covering Furumura's third button, was able to stab him in the heart. Yoshikiko confesses and reveals that the parts of the film Furumura ruined could never be re-filmed as one of the main side actors died. The killer has used florescent (see in the dark) tape on desks and tables to find the victim and stab him. He then used it again to escape without making a sound, framing someone else in the process.

When the black car stalking them passes by, Conan reveals to Haibara he called Takagi to go ask them if they had been drinking. Since the driver is smoking while going by, it means the stalkers gave up of them. They call [[Shuichi Akai]], who now has pictures the pair took while following the detective boys, and explain they can't follow anymore. Akai tells them he still hasn't confirmed something yet. As he hangs up, he amends that last statement with "it's too alike" - perhaps a reference to Haibara looking like [[Ai Haibara|Sherry]].
