警部 (Keibu) is attainable in the early 30s via successive promotion tests and is equivalent to:
* Chief of a section in a police station (i.e., homicide) or other field unit supervisors in those sections
** Juzo Megure, Inspector and unit supervisor in the Criminal Investigations Division 1.
** Chosuke Takagi is presumed to be Inspector rank because he is Megure's senior by two years, yet Matsumoto speaks of him subordinately, and he is mobile enough to be transferred to Tottori but high enough to represent MPD HQ C.I. in Tottori.
** Kansuke Yamato, Nagano Prefectural Police (promoted in-series)
** Misao Yamamura, Gunma Prefecture (promoted in Movie 13).

Assistant Police Inspector (Rank 7)
警部補 (Keibu-ho) is attainable via promotion tests. Officers at this rank and potentially below can be referred to as 'keiji'.
* When Conan impersonates Takagi, he calls Miwako Sato keibu-ho. Given that she and Shiratori both believed the impersonation, it must be accurate.
* Chiba holds this rank in Criminal Investigation Division 1 if you assume that 三係 (san-kakari) means third rank, and thus this level, as he and Miwako both are described this way. More specific reference needed, as this could also refer to the unit led by Inspector Megure.
* Yumi Miyamoto refers to Wataru Takagi once as keibu-ho, possibly as a future reference. After Takagi allows a criminal to be killed under his watch, he is definitely a junsa-bucho, but whether he received a pay dock only or a demotion as well is unclear.
*Yumi Miyamoto, MPD HQ Traffic Division, wears the official uniform rather than plainclothes but is an Assistant Inspector. Either the traffic division is required to wear the uniform on patrol, or she prefers the uniform for personal reasons.

Police Sergeant (Rank 8)
巡査部長 (Junsa-buchō) is attainable via promotion tests.
* After the bullet train fiasco where Takagi was lucky to not get fired, Miwako refers to Takagi as junsa-bucho.
* Naeko Miike, who transferred to the MPD HQ Traffic Division from Haido Station, is a patrol officer who wears the uniform but who has also achieved Police Sergeant status due to the bars on her uniform badge.

Senior Police Officer (Honorary)
巡査長 (Junsa-chō) is not a legal rank, but is bestowed on officers with years of experience and excellent work. These officers are often responsible for training and mentoring junior officers.
Unconfirmed Ranks
*Yui Uehara of Nagano Prefecture is a lower rank than Kansuke's Inspector status, but as a keiji she is likely an Assistant Inspector.
*Jinpei Matsuda was a keiji, but a given rank has yet to be found.

Japan's national police organization is made up of the National Public Safety Commission (NPSC) and the National Police Agency (NPA). The NPSC holds administrative supervision over the NPA and appoints the Commissioner General. As head of the NPA, the Commissioner General 警察庁長官 (Keisatsu-chō Chōkan) holds the highest position in the Japanese police, but his title is not a police rank.

The NPA oversees the seven Regional Police Bureaus (RPB) and the prefectural police organizations. Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department (警視庁 Keishichō) and Hokkaido Prefectural Police Headquarters are excluded from the jurisdiction of RPBs. Police stations in a prefecture are under the command of the prefecture headquarters. Tokyo MPD headquarters are located in the government buildings area beside the Imperial Palace in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.
Police Department Sections
Police Station personnel are divided into seven departments or bureaus:
*Security Department (Security for domestic and foreign dignitaries; also subversive activities and counterintelligence)
**Junpei Matsuda was on the bomb squad in this department.
*Community Police Affairs Department
**Police Boxes (Koban)
**Residential Police Boxes (Chuzaisho)
**Patrol cars
*Criminal Investigation Department (刑事部 Keijibu)
**Division 2: Handles gangster-related and white-collar crimes
**Division 1: Handles everything else
**Criminal Identification
*Community Safety Department
*Organized Crime Control Department

Within departments, there may be specialized units, such as the Identification Division that collects crime scene evidence.

Magic Kaito boss in the manga
This page says that the boss was "mentioned to exist in the manga" but I haven't found him anywhere! Who mentions him and when? I've not found anybody calling him "that person" too. Have you confused the manga with the anime? --Lombres (talk) 23:41, 26 July 2014 (CEST)
: When the sub-boss talks to Snake in blue birthday, he mentions an ano kata. Page 18 and 19.

I've found the raws (this page, remove the link if it's not allowed to put links here) and it says "ano okata" (あのお方) on page 19 (524 in that website): I think it is "ano kata" with the honorific "o", isn't it? Anyway, I didn't know it because I'm Italian and there's a big mistake in the Italian official translation of the manga: it says "our buyer", as if the sub-boss had to sell the Blue Birthday to someone else who's not a member of the organization! In the English unofficial translations I couldn't find anything better than "him" (that's not correct, because in the Japanese version you can't understand if "ano okata" is a man or a wonan)<br />
I've found out that the boss is mentioned in three further occasions:
* in Blue Birthday, page 23 (528 in the raws website), Kid says kuromaku (黒幕), whose meaning you can find here. He's just talking about Snake's boss
* in Green Dream, page 29 (563) Snake calls "boss" (ボス, Bosu) the person he's talking with on the phone
* in Crystal Mother, page 7 (587) Snake calls ボス the person he's talking with on the phone again (there's a mistake in the Italian translation here too)
It's better if you write these things yourself because I've almost never edited here and I don't know where they should be written (and I would risk to write bad English too). I've signed up only to ask you these things because I have to write on the Italian Wikipedia. The "buyer" thing is now written on the Italian Wikipedia as if it was the truth, and it has been there for months!
I've found the raws (this page, remove the link if it's not allowed to put links here) and it says "ano okata" (あのお方) on page 19 (523 in that website): I think it is "ano kata" with the honorific "o", isn't it?
* in Crystal Mother, page 7 (587) Snake calls ボス the person he's talking with on the phone again (there's a mistake in the Italian translation here too)
It's better if you write these things yourself because I've almost never edited here and I don't know were they should be written (and I would risk to write bad English too). I've signed up only to ask you these things because I have to write on the Italian Wikipedia. Hello Chekhov, I'm Sally. I came back hopefully to help make the wiki looks better :). Now I was editing Magic Kaito page and found myself adding an image of the logo of the anime show, but before that I went to the Sandbox to see if the formatting of the captioned image is correct as it is my first time to encounter such a situation wherein you add a captioned image that should be minimized and put on right. What happened as a result is that the image now has two versions (they are the same of course), so if you can delete the old version, I would be in gratitude ^_^.
