== Background ==
Makoto attended Teitan High School, where he was a prominent member, eventually the captain, of his karate team. He noticed Sonoko cheering on her friend [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] during a martial arts tournament, and became interested in her.

Some time later, he worked in his family's summer resort as a waiter, where he encountered Sonoko again, this time in company of Ran and [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]].<ref name=Summer>[[Sonoko's Dangerous Summer Story|Episode 153-154: Sonoko's Dangerous Summer Story]]</ref> Soon, however, Sonoko was stalked by a crazed serial killer who suspected her of having taken a picture of him at his latest murder (which she hadn't) and therefore wanted to both silence her as a potential witness and kill her because he hated brown headed girls in general. Motoko saved her just in the nick of time, earning her affection, but his constant participation in martial arts competitions and a studying period overseas prevented them from seeing each other often enough.<ref name=Summer /> Sonoko always does her best to maintain contact with him, though, including sending him little trinkets and gifts that she makes herself, and Makoto has stayed loyal to her. He usually gets caught up in one of Sonoko's silly romantic schemes. His fighting skills have proven to be incredibly handy for [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]], having saved Conan, Sonoko, and [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] from being in dangerous peril many times.

== Personality ==
As a master martial artist, Makoto is usually cool and collected, especially in crisis situations, and also a keen observer. The only thing which does throw him off is his affection for Sonoko, for whom he will go great lengths, even forsake an important tournament just to meet her. However, Makoto's bashfulness around her, his dedication to his fighting skills and some competitive impulse keep him jumping from one obligation to the other, so their relationship is rendered a bit difficult.

As a comic relief, Makoto always bears a plaster above his left brow as a mark for his fighting competitiveness. In addition, he seems completely immune to pain, dismissing a knife sticking in his arm as nothing too significant.

Sonoko originally met [[Makoto Kyogoku]] while vacationing, where he was a waiter at a restaurant and worked at a hotel in his spare time. At first, neither she, Conan, nor Ran recognized him, because he wore glasses to hide his features. After he later protects her from getting killed by a crazed serial killer, Sonoko and Makoto entertain a long distance relationship, which is additionally hampered by the fact that he tends to be a little bashful around her.

Makoto often saves Sonoko from dangerous peril, like in a snow lodge,<ref name=Valentine>[[The Truth Behind Valentine's|Episode 266-268: The Truth Behind Valentine's]]</ref> and in a forest.<ref name=Red>[[Sonoko's Red Handkerchief|Episode 457-458: Sonoko's Red Handkerchief]]</ref> Sonoko loves to use some kind of concocted scheme to get Makoto to come to her, usually in some romantic way, to create a romantic and dreamy experience for her.<ref name=Red /> This, however, doesn't always end in success, but he sometimes does stumble through her little schemes.<ref name=Valentine /><ref name=Red /> He often warns her of the way she is dressed, because he believes that guys will try to come after her because of it.<ref name=Summer /><ref name=Valentine />

Sonoko often wants to show Makoto that her feelings for him are stronger than he thinks, planning simple ideas to make him feel special. Although long distance relationships can be hard to be in, and despite her constant flirting with any other attractive boy she stumbles upon, Sonoko has generally stayed faithful to Makoto, other than dreaming of meeting up with the Kaitou Kid, though this is mostly to see him up close more than anything else. Makoto also stays faithful to Sonoko.

[[Ran Mouri]] is Shinichi's childhood friend and canonical love interest. After leaving the cockpit, Conan uses the communication system to speak to her (through her headphones) as Shinichi claiming he'll protect her and guide her into performing a safe landing. And quite unexpectedly, Ran instead gets mad at him for being like an eclipse: one minute he's there, the next he's gone. She goes on to say that there are moments she wished he was there and not always pretending to go away for a while but never come back. After leaving the cockpit, Conan uses the communication system to speak to her (through her headphones) as Shinichi claiming he'll protect her and guide her into performing a safe landing. And quite unexpectedly, Ran instead gets mad at him for being like an eclipse: one minute he's there, the next he's gone. She goes on to say that there are moments she wished he was there and not always pretending to go away for a while but never come back. Ran is a childhood friend of [[Shinichi Kudo]]. She is the daughter of private detective [[Kogoro Mouri]] and [[Eri Kisaki]], a lawyer. At that moment, Conan enters the room, and seeing his phone in Ran's hands, rushes towards it while shouting and grabs it back asking: "''Did you look?''". Following this event, Ran first believes that Shinichi often contacts Conan without her knowing, which would in some way explain how he always seems to help out on cases. It is later showed that Conan actually exchanged his phone with Agasa's (which are both of the same model) and used his phone upstairs to call Ran, while she was experimenting with the Professor's phone, to create this whole alibi. Ran's greatest personality trait is that she is genuinely cares for those she loves. She also constantly tries to reunite her father and mother again - though with little success, thanks to the mutual stubbornness of both parents. She can be very brave and resourceful when she wants to be, and rescues Conan from trouble with her karate skills on occasion. However, she has an irrational fear of the supernatural and is thus - unlike her friend [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]] - absolutely no fan of anything related to the horror genre.

It is revealed in book 8 that she can play the piano well. In addition, she appreciates fine art, is very good at cooking and household chores (unlike her mother), and looks after both Conan and her father.

In chapters 350-354 of the manga and episode 286-288 of the anime, it is revealed that she and Shinichi had gone to the United States at some point in the past to visit Shinichi's parents in New York. They meet his mother, and her actress friend, [[Sharon Vineyard]] (also known as Vermouth). Later that evening, Vermouth disguises as a serial killer to do BO work, and is saved by Ran and Shinichi who encounter her on their way back from a show. She had slipped and would have fallen to her death, but Ran caught her arm and Shinichi helped her pull her to safety, despite Vermouth's guise of a wanted serial killer that the FBI were apparently pursuing in the area. Due to this, Sharon gave Ran the nickname "Angel", and Shinichi the nickname "Cool Guy". Later in the anime/manga, Vermouth shows hesitance to kill Ran and later Conan as well,<ref name=Vermouth /> but whether or not it is because of any emotional attachment is unclear.

Chiba can be serious, but he is shown to be a mostly light hearted officer. He has been a huge fan of ''tokusatsu'' shows like ''[[Kamen Yaiba]]'' for a long time, and was a member of the broadcasting committee at his elementary school. For a project, he and the other club members made a tokusatsu film called ''Kamen Baiya''.<ref name=Naeko></ref> He also loves to eat and is sometimes shown stuffing his face, usually with burgers and sodas, but usually this is merely done for comic effect. Nonetheless, Chiba can be very supportive, and is a big help, especially for using his size to catch criminals. He, as well as [[Yumi Miyamoto]], is very supportive for [[Wataru Takagi|Takagi's]] relationship and feelings for [[Miwako Sato|Sato]], and is one of the few officers in the Tokyo district to not get involved in [[Ninzaburo Shiratori|Shiratori's]] schemes to get the couple to break up.

Chiba has a habit of checking VHS tapes to see if they were rewound. He believes he picked this habit up from his older brother.<ref name=Naeko></ref>

Chiba and Naeko were childhood friends and attended Teitan Elementary together were they both joined the school broadcasting commitee (although Naeko only joined because Chiba did). When Naeko was to move away, Chiba wrote down his feelings in a love letter. Naeko wrote her response on the side of a VHS in the committee storage room, hoping Chiba's sweating habit would cause the message "I like you, too" to show up on his hands after grabbing the tape. Unfortunately, Chiba couldn't find the right tape and never got the message.

On the day of his Elementary school reunion, Chiba returned to the school and searched for the tape again. With the help of Conan and the [[Detective Boys]] he finally finds the message and heads for the reunion. Nonetheless, Chiba can be very supportive, and is a big help, especially for using his size to catch criminals. He, as well as [[Yumi Miyamoto]], is very supportive for [[Wataru Takagi|Takagi's]] relationship and feelings for [[Miwako Sato|Sato]], and is one of the few officers in the Tokyo district to not get involved in [[Ninzaburo Shiratori|Shiratori's]] schemes to get the couple to break up.

[[Ran Mouri]] is Shinichi's childhood friend and canonical love interest. They have known each other since as early as kindergarten<ref name="Grade1"/> and had been playmates since then, which caused some censure from [[Eri Kisaki]].They are very close together, they have even been together as long as the time of children all the way to young adults, they have some what of a love-hate relationship in the beginning but when she met Conan (who is Shinichi but she doesn't know it), she told him that She was in love with him for some time, probably ever since they first met, which caused Shinichi/Conan to blush like mad. They are living together with her dad and solves crimes with her father (without her noticing), making him appear as a great detective for most of the cases that Shinichi has solved himself. Conan has shared a great deal of affection to Ran since him being Conan including hugging, holding hands, and at even one time they slept in the same bed and even took a bath together (which caused him to get a nosebleed). Shinichi has confessed his love to Ran in the 4th movie non-canon 'Captured In Her Eyes' (which Ran mistook as his attempt to get her memories back). At one time he tried to confess his love properly (some viewers say to even propose) to Ran, but was interrupted by a case that got held there. Also, when Shinichi went missing, Ran was worried sick and she was afraid that something bad had happened to him and almost went to the police. It is also shown that she couldn't even sleep cause she missed him all to much. So what Shinichi used his bowtie to mimic his real voice and called her, telling her that everything's alright and he's getting a difficult case done. There are only a few characters in the series who know Conan's real identity. None of them have ever betrayed Conan's identity to date. The main characters to know the secret are [[Hiroshi Agasa]], Conan's parents, [[Heiji Hattori]] and [[Ai Haibara]]. Also, [[Sharon Vineyard]] knows, but for unknown reasons, she has kept it a secret from the rest of the Organization. [[Eisuke Hondou]], the younger brother of C.I.A. agent [[Hidemi Hondou]], also knows and keeps Conan's secret. [[Kaitou Kid]] also knows Conan's identity, and whenever he tries to publicly steal, he reveals that he only wants to compete with Conan as thief and detective. Since Shinichi is not featured as prominently as Conan throughout the series, only a few of his relationships with other characters have been substantially explored.

=== Ran Mouri ===

[[Ran Mouri]] is Shinichi's childhood friend and canonical love interest. They have known each other since as early as kindergarten<ref name="Grade1"/> and had been playmates since then, which caused some censure from [[Eri Kisaki]].They are very close together, they have even been together as long as the time of children all the way to young adults, they have some what of a love-hate relationship in the beginning but when she met Conan (who is Shinichi but she doesn't know it), she told him that She was in love with him for some time, probably ever since they first met, which caused Shinichi/Conan to blush like mad. They are living together with her dad and solves crimes with her father (without her noticing), making him appear as a great detective for most of the cases that Shinichi has solved himself. Conan has shared a great deal of affection to Ran since him being Conan including hugging, holding hands, and at even one time they slept in the same bed and even took a bath together (which caused him to get a nosebleed). Shinichi has confessed his love to Ran in the 4th movie non-canon 'Captured In Her Eyes' (which Ran mistook as his attempt to get her memories back). At one time he tried to confess his love properly (some viewers say to even propose) to Ran, but was interrupted by a case that got held there. Also, when Shinichi went missing, Ran was worried sick and she was afraid that something bad had happened to him and almost went to the police. It is also shown that she couldn't even sleep cause she missed him all to much. So what Shinichi used his bowtie to mimic his real voice and called her, telling her that everything's alright and he's getting a difficult case done. Ai Haibara is the third girl that seems to have somewhat romantic feelings for Conan/Shinichi, although she never truly admits it. Indeed, it is a mystery just exactly what she feels for him, whether friendship or otherwise. Some people, such as [[Yukiko Kudo|Conan's mother]] and [[Gin]], have stated that she has feelings for Conan. It could be said that, because of their almost equal level of intelligence as well as similarities in their pasts (i.e. they're both victims of the [[APTX 4869]]), she finds it easier to talk to him.

Despite the fact [[Toichi Kuroba|Toichi]] and Shinichi only met once prior to Toichi's death, it's worth mentioning Toichi referred to Shinichi as his "older brother" and himself as the "younger brother". This is because of Yusaku, Shinichi's father, being the '''father''' of the name of Kaitou '''Kid''', Toichi's secret identity.

== People who know Conan's real identity ==

There are only a few characters in the series who know Conan's real identity. None of them have ever betrayed Conan's identity to date. The main characters to know the secret are [[Hiroshi Agasa]], Conan's parents, [[Heiji Hattori]] and [[Ai Haibara]]. Also, [[Sharon Vineyard]] knows, but for unknown reasons, she has kept it a secret from the rest of the Organization. [[Eisuke Hondou]], the younger brother of C.I.A. agent [[Hidemi Hondou]], also knows and keeps Conan's secret. [[Kaitou Kid]] also knows Conan's identity, and whenever he tries to publicly steal, he reveals that he only wants to compete with Conan as thief and detective. Still, it is not clear whether he knows Conan's secret in the actual anime and manga, but Kid seems to realize there's something unusual about Conan.
