Makoto Kyogoku is a character in the manga and anime franchise Detective Conan. Makoto is Sonoko Suzuki's long distance boyfriend.

Background
Makoto attended Teitan High School, where he was a prominent member, eventually the captain, of his karate team. He noticed Sonoko cheering on her friend Ran during a martial arts tournament, and became interested in her.

Some time later, he worked in his family's summer resort as a waiter, where he encountered Sonoko again, this time in company of Ran and Conan. Soon, however, Sonoko was stalked by a crazed serial killer who suspected her of having taken a picture of him at his latest murder (which she hadn't) and therefore wanted to both silence her as a potential witness and kill her because he hated brown headed girls in general. Motoko saved her just in the nick of time, earning her affection, but his constant participation in martial arts competitions and a studying period overseas prevented them from seeing each other often enough. Sonoko always does her best to maintain contact with him, though, including sending him little trinkets and gifts that she makes herself, and Makoto has stayed loyal to her. He usually gets caught up in one of Sonoko's silly romantic schemes. His fighting skills have proven to be incredibly handy for Conan, having saved Conan, Sonoko, and Ran from being in dangerous peril many times.

Personality
As a master martial artist, Makoto is usually cool and collected, especially in crisis situations, and also a keen observer. The only thing which does throw him off is his affection for Sonoko, for whom he will go great lengths, even forsake an important tournament just to meet her. However, Makoto's bashfulness around her, his dedication to his fighting skills and some competitive impulse keep him jumping from one obligation to the other, so their relationship is rendered a bit difficult.

As a comic relief, Makoto always bears a plaster above his left brow as a mark for his fighting competitiveness. In addition, he seems completely immune to pain, dismissing a knife sticking in his arm as nothing too significant.

Relationships analysis
* Sonoko Suzuki and Makoto Kyogoku

Sonoko originally met Makoto Kyogoku while vacationing, where he was a waiter at a restaurant and worked at a hotel in his spare time. At first, neither she, Conan, nor Ran recognized him, because he wore glasses to hide his features. After he later protects her from getting killed by a crazed serial killer, Sonoko and Makoto entertain a long distance relationship, which is additionally hampered by the fact that he tends to be a little bashful around her.

Makoto often saves Sonoko from dangerous peril, like in a snow lodge, and in a forest. Sonoko loves to use some kind of concocted scheme to get Makoto to come to her, usually in some romantic way, to create a romantic and dreamy experience for her. This, however, doesn't always end in success, but he sometimes does stumble through her little schemes. He often warns her of the way she is dressed, because he believes that guys will try to come after her because of it.

Sonoko often wants to show Makoto that her feelings for him are stronger than he thinks, planning simple ideas to make him feel special. However, these often go in awry, as she either cannot make what she had planned to make, like when she promised to make him a home-made sweater, but had to resort to buying one in a mall, or Makoto has no idea what she gave him is, like when he believed that the pottery she sent him was supposed to be for flowers. Sonoko keeps a photo of Makoto in her bag, and uses it as a good luck charm for when she takes exams. She has also made him a chocolate, trying to make him feel jealous by not saying who it was more, thus forcing him to visit her in a snow lodge to ask her what was going on. When he finds out that indeed, she made him the chocolate, he gets very embarrassed himself.

Although long distance relationships can be hard to be in, and despite her constant flirting with any other attractive boy she stumbles upon, Sonoko has generally stayed faithful to Makoto, other than dreaming of meeting up with the Kaitou Kid, though this is mostly to see him up close more than anything else. Makoto also stays faithful to Sonoko.

Relationship analysis
Ran Mouri is Shinichi's childhood friend and canonical love interest. They have known each other since kindergarten and have been playmates since, which caused some censure from Ran’s mother, Eri Kisaki. They are very close to each other; as they have always been together since their childhood years all the way to their second year of high school. Both Ran and Shinichi have somewhat of a love-hate relationship before Shinichi 'disappeared'. However when Ran meets Conan (who is Shinichi, although she's unaware of this fact), she tells him that she has been in love with Shinichi for a long time- probably since they first met, which of course causes Shinichi/Conan to blush.

Conan (Shinichi) is currently living with Ran and her father, Kogoro Mouri in his detective agency. Since living with them, 'Conan' has solved many cases in Kogoro’s place without him noticing, making ‘Sleeping Kogoro’ a household name. Shinichi has been able to have a great deal of affectionate moments with Ran since becoming Conan. This includes hugging, holding hands, sitting in her lap (etc.), even sleeping in the same bed and having a bath together once which causes Shinichi/Conan to have a nose bleed. While still as Conan, Shinichi is able to keep other guys away from Ran, as seen in episode 6 when he tells a guy to never go near her and at the end discovered the chocolate that Ran had made for the guy was only a chocolate for celebrating Friendship.

Shinichi has confessed to Ran (although non-canonical) in the 4th movie 'Captured In Her Eyes' which she mistook as his attempt to get her memory back. He has also, during a brief return to his true form, canonically planned to propose to her but was interrupted by a case and turned back into Conan before he could. When Shinichi went missing Ran was worried sick (so much that she couldn't even sleep) and was on the verge of going to the police. After many events in the manga, Shinichi decides to give Ran his cell phone number for her to call when she wants to speak to him, and, as Conan, uses his bow tie to mimic his real voice and reassure her he's fine, despite the fact that she may be endangered due to having contact with him.

Shinichi doesn't dare tell Ran he's Conan as, until the Black Organisation is stopped, she could be in danger if she knew the truth (though Ran has almost caught on several times in the show)- also although Shinichi does love Ran, he has stopped himself from (canonically) telling her about his feelings, as then she will miss him even more and he doesn't want to see her cry anymore, even if he is no longer in her heart (it is possible, however, that Shinichi hasn't really thought this last statement through, as even after this he's seen getting jealous and fending off any men who get close to her, proving he clearly does care if someone else is in her heart instead of him).

Despite their obstacles, it is quite obvious that throughout the series Ran and Shinichi (Conan) have a relationship that started as childhood friends but developed into love- however, how long it will take until it is safe for this love to prosper and be openly shown depends on the impending defeat of the Black Organisation.
When Ran asks Shinichi "But wouldn't you just want one girlfriend" he looks at her with a sort of a romantic look in his Eyes but then he gets caught by her asking "Why are you looking at me like that". Then at tropical land when they are at the mystery coaster Ran asks Shinichi why did he come with her but Shinichi never really gets the chance to tell Ran an answer because she then holds his hand and they fall down into the steep hill where a murder was about to be discovered. After Shinichi solved the case, he leaves ran to find out what those men dressed in black were up to and leaves her in the middle of tropical land.

While trying to land a pilot-less plane, Ran, at the steering controls, feels the burden of being responsible for the lives of the many passengers aboard. Conan, noticing her fragile state of emotions, asks Sonoko to take his place as the co-pilot saying he has to go to the washroom. After leaving the cockpit, Conan uses the communication system to speak to her (through her headphones) as Shinichi claiming he'll protect her and guide her into performing a safe landing. And quite unexpectedly, Ran instead gets mad at him for being like an eclipse: one minute he's there, the next he's gone. She goes on to say that there are moments she wished he was there and not always pretending to go away for a while but never come back. After bursting into tears, she eventually lets out a: "I love you Shinichi".

But after the landing, when Conan once again calls her as Shinichi, she tells him how she was misled by Kaitou Kid pretending to be him and that "her secret wasn't out" after all. Shinichi, feigning ignorance, asks for more information. But she replies that this is a secret between the Kid and her and that he should use his detective skills to pierce the mystery all by himself.

Relationship analysis
Ran Mouri is Shinichi's childhood friend and canonical love interest. They have known each other since as early as kindergarten and had been playmates since then, which caused some censure from Eri Kisaki. They are very close together, they have even been together as long as the time of children all the way to young adults, they have somewhat of a love-hate relationship before Shinichi 'disappeared', but when Ran mets Conan (who is Shinichi, although she's ignorant of this fact), she tells him that she was in love with Shinichi for a long time- probably ever since they first met, which of course causes Shinichi/Conan to blush like mad.

They are living together with her Father, Kogoro Mouri and 'Conan' solves crimes in her Father's place without either noticing, making Kogoro a great detective for most of the cases that Shinichi has solved himself. Shinichi has been able to have a great deal of affectionate moments with Ran since becoming Conan, including hugging, holding hands, sitting in her lap (etc.), even sleeping in the same bed and having a bath together once (he had a nose bleed at the last one). While still as Conan, Shinichi is able to keep other guys away from Ran, as seen in episode 6 when he tells a guy to never go near her and at the end discovered the chocolate that Ran had made for the guy was only a chocolate for celebrating Friendship. Shinichi has confessed to Ran in the 4th movie 'Captured In Her Eyes' (which she then mistook as his attempt to get her memory back ; he has also, during a brief return to his true form, canonically planned to propose to her but was interrupted by a case and turned back into Conan before he could. When Shinichi went missing Ran was worried sick (so much that she couldn't even sleep) and was on the verge of going to the police. Although it's dangerous, Shinichi has given her a number to his cell phone for her to call when she wants to speak to him, and, as Conan, uses his bow tie to mimic his real voice and reassure her he's fine. Shinichi doesn't dare tell Ran he's Conan as, until the Black Organisation is stopped, she could be in danger if she knew the truth (though Ran has almost caught on several times in the show)- also although Shinichi does love Ran, he has stopped himself from (canonically) telling her about his feelings, as then she will miss him even more and he doesn't want to see her cry anymore, even if he is no longer in her heart (it is possible, however, that Shinichi hasn't really thought this last statement through, as even after this he's seen getting jealous and fending off any men who get close to her, proving he clearly _does_ care if someone else is in her heart instead of him).

Despite their obstacles, it is quite obvious that throughout the series Ran and Shinichi (Conan) have a relationship that started as childhood friends but developed into love- however, how long it will take until it is safe for this love to prosper and be openly shown depends on the impending defeat of the Black Organisation.
Ran Mouri, also known as Rachel Moore in the Funimation dub, is the 2nd protagonist in the manga and anime series, Detective Conan.

Background
Ran is a childhood friend of Shinichi Kudo. She is the daughter of private detective Kogoro Mouri and Eri Kisaki, a lawyer. Her parents separated when she was six, and one of her biggest goals is to get them back together. Her best friend next to Shinichi is her classmate Sonoko, who constantly keeps taunting her about her relationship with Shinichi.

Ran is the captain of the karate team of Teitan High School and therefore is very powerful as demonstrated when she won her Regional Championship. However, she gets easily frightened by the idea of ghosts or monsters. Besides that, she is also very lucky in gambling.

After Shinichi's disappearance, she meets Conan Edogawa along with Professor Agasa, who introduces him as a distant "relative" and asks if she wouldn't mind taking care of him at her house. She and her father practically adopt him, as Kogoro believes he is a good luck charm for helping him solve cases . Ran immediately comes to think of him as a surrogate little brother. Little does Ran know that "Conan" is actually Shinichi.

Doubts about Conan's identity
In time, Ran comes to suspect that Conan is actually Shinichi despite what her common sense would say, but he always manages to trick her and "prove" her wrong. This happens many times, and in one particular instance, she was so sure that her reasoning was correct until Shinichi (temporarily restored to his true age) appears at the same time as Conan (who was really Ai Haibara in disguise).<br> Still, there seems to be a latent conviction remaining in Ran that Conan could indeed be Shinichi; this is hinted at by her increasingly trusting behavior towards Conan throughout the series. Yet, mostly because of Sonoko's taunting, she also fantasies that Shinichi is with a brown/blond or strawberry blond-haired woman all the time - which is true to some extent, with the appearance of Ai Haibara in the series.

The cell phone incident
Conan once forgets his cell phone on the couch and Ran, in the room at the time, remembers to send an email to Shinichi to let him know that she's going with her father on a case and that his presence would be most welcome as Kogoro could use the help. Right after sending the message, Conan's phone starts vibrating. Ran, quite perplexed by the perfect timing, checks his phone only to discover a new email (she hasn't seen the content yet). At that moment, Conan enters the room, and seeing his phone in Ran's hands, rushes towards it while shouting and grabs it back asking: "Did you look?". He quickly understands that Ran's email may have risen doubts about his identity.
Following this event, Ran first believes that Shinichi often contacts Conan without her knowing, which would in some way explain how he always seems to help out on cases. Later on, after seeing Conan give an important clue to the investigation team without making use of his cell phone (to eventually contact Shinichi like she was suspecting), she starts to believe that Conan is actually Shinichi thinking that past occurrences of both being present at the same time was just a trick he used to fool her.

At the end of the day, Ran is able to retrieve Conan's phone. Late at night, after waiting for everybody to go to bed, she tries to get past the phone's PIN code to check whether her email is there or not. This, to her, would be undeniable proof that Conan is indeed Shinichi. After finally guessing the number equivalent of "Sherlock" to be the PIN code, she's surprised not to see her email there. She instantly tries a few times to resend another email but nothing comes up on Conan's phone. That's when Shinichi calls her complaining about the numerous emails she's been sending. Conan, then knocks at the door and claims back his phone saying that he didn't want people looking inside because of messages he received from a girl he likes. It is later showed that Conan actually exchanged his phone with Agasa's (which are both of the same model) and used his phone upstairs to call Ran, while she was experimenting with the Professor's phone, to create this whole alibi. Shinichi then tells Ran that she now knows his phone number. And Ran, pleased with the situation, clears her mind out of all suspicions she had about Conan's identity - at least, consciously.

Personality
Ran's greatest personality trait is that she is genuinely cares for those she loves. She also constantly tries to reunite her father and mother again - though with little success, thanks to the mutual stubbornness of both parents. She can be very brave and resourceful when she wants to be, and rescues Conan from trouble with her karate skills on occasion. However, she has an irrational fear of the supernatural and is thus - unlike her friend Sonoko - absolutely no fan of anything related to the horror genre.

It is revealed in book 8 that she can play the piano well. In addition, she appreciates fine art, is very good at cooking and household chores (unlike her mother), and looks after both Conan and her father.

In chapters 350-354 of the manga and episode 286-288 of the anime, it is revealed that she and Shinichi had gone to the United States at some point in the past to visit Shinichi's parents in New York. They meet his mother, and her actress friend, Sharon Vineyard (also known as Vermouth). Later that evening, Vermouth disguises as a serial killer to do BO work, and is saved by Ran and Shinichi who encounter her on their way back from a show. She had slipped and would have fallen to her death, but Ran caught her arm and Shinichi helped her pull her to safety, despite Vermouth's guise of a wanted serial killer that the FBI were apparently pursuing in the area. Due to this, Sharon gave Ran the nickname "Angel", and Shinichi the nickname "Cool Guy". Later in the anime/manga, Vermouth shows hesitance to kill Ran and later Conan as well, but whether or not it is because of any emotional attachment is unclear.

Ran is noted by both Shinichi and Akai Shuuichi to cry a lot. This claim has been attributed to the manga file called "Ran's Tears".

Relationship analysis
Shinichi Kudo
Shinichi Kudo and Ran Mouri

Shinichi Kudo and Ran Mouri have been friends ever since childhood. When the two first met, they were at kindergarten age, and later they were playmates. Eri Kisaki, Ran's mom, and Yukiko Kudo, Shinichi's mom, would often set playdates for the two to play together. Shinichi and Ran have stayed close all the way through the present age, which has led to both of them feeling romantic feelings for each other. Ran recalls that she truly felt her feelings for Shinichi were true love when he rescued her from the serial killer in New York. When Shinichi is turned into Conan, thanks to the Black Organization, Ran becomes especially worried for Shinichi, especially about where he is, and often hopes that he isn't in danger.

Shinichi, as Conan, often calls Ran, and using his bowtie, talks to Ran in his normal teenager voice, mostly to calm her when she is feeling fear about if he is hurt, or when he wants to make her feel better because she feels lonely without him. As Conan, Shinichi has grown closer to Ran. Ran is shown throughout to be dedicated to Shinichi, and will always love him no matter where he is. Shinichi himself also has feelings for Ran, and loves her as well. He is very protective of her when there are other guys with her, and he keeps her away from any other man. He has even confessed his feelings for her, though he was Conan when this occurred. Ran did not believe him, because of that fact.

Ran and Shinichi have shared many precious romantic moments, such as when Shinichi bought Ran a pair of red gloves for Christmas, or when he pretended that as Shinichi, he ate her Valentine's Day chocolate that she had made for him, while she was asleep. Shinichi is deeply saddened knowing that Ran is waiting for him to return, and that he himself cannot do anything about it. Although various characters, including Heiji Hattori, have told him to just admit everything to her, for the sake of her heart, he realizes he cannot tell her, because he does not want to put her in danger against the Black Organization, as he considers her life more important than his. People also look at them as a couple by how they act and how they talk about each other. When asked to Ran though, she does say that Shinichi is her boyfriend (this causes him/conan to blush slightly but never realy says anything about it).

Her parents
Ran remains close to both her parents even though they have been separated for ten years. Her constant hope is that they finally get together again, and on occasion she even plays (re-)matchmaker by arranging not-so-accidental meetings between them, though a reunion, while possible, is so far constantly hampered by mutual stubborness and the occasional criminal incident taking place in the immediate vicinity.

Ai Haibara
There are instances where Haibara will caution Conan from actions that involve Ran, though it's assumed this is due merely to the fact that she wants to keep her identity hidden. At one point, she was very cold and distant towards Ran, just like she was to most other people. Ran believed that it was because that Haibara had hated her. However, later that day, Haibara finally properly introduced herself to Ran, and they slowly became friends.<br> Haibara considers Ran a spitting image her older sister, Akemi Miyano, so she takes special interest in protecting her. These feelings began after Ran jumped through a slew of bullets from Calvados (and later Vermouth), to save Haibara and hold her down to the ground to shield her from the gunfire. Haibara immediately thinks of her own sister, and begins to treat and look at Ran as a spitting image of her. When at a later point she had learned that Korn, Chianti, and the rest of the Black Organization were lurking about, Haibara begs for Ran to stay at Agasa's house, immediately thinking of her own sister's death, and wanting to keep Ran safe.

Hondou Eisuke
In Clash of Red and Black, Eisuke has shown some interest in Ran. He had admitted to Conan that he loved Ran and claimed that he would take Ran to America and live happily ever after there, and thinks if he could ask for Shinichi's permission. But Conan, without hesitating, said no in a very serious expression, which the look on Conan's face revealed his true identity to Eisuke.

Abilities
Ran is a master in karate and has won many karate tournaments; she holds the title of Regional Champion for her age group. In fact, she is very strong to the extent that she can break a stone with ease. In the ninth movie, Strategy Above the Depths, Conan states that Ran has an unusual amount of stamina.
Though sometimes, for example in the second movie, Ran may not be able to use her karate, whether it's because she is too scared or just because she is just too weak.

Chiba, commonly referred to as Detective Chiba, is a character in the manga and anime franchise Detective Conan. Chiba is a detective in the Tokyo district, and very often works alongside Inspector Megure and Wataru Takagi. His main duty appears to be to obtain information outside of the crime scenes. Sometimes, he will even go out and substitute as inspector when Megure is busy on another case.

Background
Initially, he was introduced as a minor role in the 4th Detective Conan Movie, as well as with a minor cameo in The Final Screening Murder Case. He then onwards takes more of a noticeable role throughout the series.

Chiba attended Teitan Elementary School, in the 20th graduating class, 2 classes below Sumiko Kobayashi. Since childhood, he has had a tendency to sweat.

Personality
Chiba can be serious, but he is shown to be a mostly light hearted officer. He has been a huge fan of tokusatsu shows like Kamen Yaiba for a long time, and was a member of the broadcasting committee at his elementary school. For a project, he and the other club members made a tokusatsu film called Kamen Baiya. He also loves to eat and is sometimes shown stuffing his face, usually with burgers and sodas, but usually this is merely done for comic effect. Nonetheless, Chiba can be very supportive, and is a big help, especially for using his size to catch criminals. He, as well as Yumi Miyamoto, is very supportive for Takagi's relationship and feelings for Sato, and is one of the few officers in the Tokyo district to not get involved in Shiratori's schemes to get the couple to break up.

Chiba has a habit of checking VHS tapes to see if they were rewound. He believes he picked this habit up from his older brother.

Relationships
Chiba and Naeko Miike
Chiba and Naeko were childhood friends and attended Teitan Elementary together were they both joined the school broadcasting commitee (although Naeko only joined because Chiba did). When Naeko was to move away, Chiba wrote down his feelings in a love letter. Naeko wrote her response on the side of a VHS in the committee storage room, hoping Chiba's sweating habit would cause the message "I like you, too" to show up on his hands after grabbing the tape. Unfortunately, Chiba couldn't find the right tape and never got the message.

On the day of his Elementary school reunion, Chiba returned to the school and searched for the tape again. With the help of Conan and the Detective Boys he finally finds the message and heads for the reunion. Unfortunately Naeko doesn't show, and he hears from a former classmate that she said she is "now with the one she loved". Depressed, Chiba immediatley leaves and finds a lady traffic cop giving him a ticket. When the officer offers to forget about the ticket since he is a fellow officer, Chiba scolds her for trying to break the law. Chiba leaves with the ticket, but then wonders how the girl knew he was a detective. The officer turns out to be Naeko, who has just been transferred to the police headquarters in Tokyo (working under Yumi) and looks forward to working with the one she loves.

A book series written by Yusaku Kudo.

Detective Saimonji
A murder mystery book series written by author Shinmei Nintaro, that has received a television follow up. The ID of the murderer changes each time to maintain viewer interest. Both Ran Mouri and Shinichi Kudo enjoy the series.

Sports
Soccer
Shinichi is very fond of soccer and often fiddles around with a soccer ball when solving cases to help himself think. This trait continues when Shinichi is shrunk and becomes Conan. Shinichi's soccer abilities help Conan out of bad situations and even helps him capture criminals thanks to the Power-Enhancing Kick Shoes. Early on in the series, Conan would kick just about anything around in order to stop criminals in their tracks. Later on Dr. Agasa invents the Anywhere Ball Dispensing Belt allowing Conan not to have to worry about having something to kick anymore.

Two major soccer teams found in Detective Conan are the Tokyo Spirits and Big Osaka. There have also been several cases relating to soccer in some way, including but not limited to: Pro Soccer Player Blackmail Case, The Indiscriminate Stadium Threatening Case, and The 3 "K"s of Osaka Case.

Baseball
Baseball is one of the most popular team sport in Japan and is usually taken seriously from high school onwards, particularly the high school Koshien Tournament. Shinichi has not shown much interest in the sport, however as Conan, he often plays baseball with the Detective Boys despite preferring a game of soccer. On the other hand, Heiji Hattori is a big fan of baseball, and is most of the time seen wearing a baseball cap, to support the local Osaka baseball team The White Sax.

Karate
Ran is the captain of the Teitan High School karate team. Ran sometimes uses her karate to defend herself or protect Conan or others. She sometimes punches something when she is furious to prove that she is able to beat anyone if she wanted to, usually causing Conan, Shinichi, and Kogoro to do exactly what she wants, as they fear of becoming Ran's next victim. Sonoko's boyfriend, Makoto Kyogoku, is also a karate champion and uses his karate to protect Sonoko.
She sometimes punches something when she is furious to prove that she is able to beat anyone if she wanted to, usually causing Conan, Shinichi, and Kogoro to do exactly what she wants, as they fear of becoming Ran's next victim.
Japanese idols, usually females from their teens to their early twenties, are seen in a wide range of media, from being J-pop singers, actors in dramas, TV personalities, and models for advertisements. An idol's popularity can range anywhere from a few months to several years.
She is an idol who sings, dances and acts. Kogoro is a huge fan of Yoko, never missing her television shows or specials. Kogoro has had an opportunity to be staring in a Yoko TV show, as seen in 'Follow the Vanished Diamond! Conan and Heiji vs Kid!'. The name "Yoko Okino" is probably a reference to the Japanese-American artist and musician Yōko Ono.

Sports

Baseball
Baseball is a big sport in Japan and taken seriously from high school onwards, particularly the high school Koshien Tournament. Shinichi isn't shown having much interest in the sport, and when shown as Conan, he often plays baseball with the Detective Boys despite Conan saying he prefers playing soccer. On the other hand, Heiji Hattori is a big fan of baseball, and is most of the time shown wearing a baseball cap, to support the local Osaka baseball team The White Sax.
Shinichi Kudo is the protagonist of the manga and anime. Viz romanized his original name as Shin'ichi Kudo while Shogakukan's website romanizes it as Shinichi Kudoh. Shinichi Kudo was a well known High School Detective who helped solve cases which the police could not. One day, he investigates a suspicious man. Later he is attacked and forced to swallow a poison called APTX 4869 which turns him back into a child. Now he lives with his childhood friend Ran Mouri and helps her father Kogoro Mouri solve cases hoping that they will run into a case involving those strange men, part of the Black Organization, who forced him to drink the poison. He takes on the alias Conan Edogawa to keep his real identity secret from everyone (besides a select few) to protect his loved ones, particularly Ran.

Background
At the beginning of the series, Shinichi brings his friend Ran to a local theme park called "Tropical Land", to celebrate her victory in the Metropolitan Karate Championships. He later ends up solving a murder case there. As they are leaving, Shinichi witnesses a suspicious exchange between an unknown man and Vodka in a secluded area just outside the park. He leaves Ran and investigates but does not notice Gin, Vodka's partner, who knocks him out and forces him to swallow a new experimental poison known as APTX 4869. They then leave him to die. However, instead of killing Shinichi, a rare side-effect occurred. It shrinks his body so it appears to be that of his six or seven year-old self. In desperation and confusion, Shinichi heads back to his house and runs into his next door neighbor and close family friend, Dr. Hiroshi Agasa who warns him he must keep his identity as the Black Organization will endanger his life and others associated with him.
Shinichi comes up with the alias Conan Edogawa after Arthur Conan Doyle and Edogawa Rampo and pretends to be a distant relative of Agasa's who places Conan in Ran's care. Ran's father Kogoro Mouri, owns a Detective Agency which may allow him to run into a case involving the Black Organization. He is signed up at Teitan Elementary to further protect his identity and makes friends with some of the kids and forms the Detective Boys.

Personality
At the beginning of the series, Shinichi is a 17-year old student at Teitan High School. He was already well-known as a brilliant young detective who solved many difficult cases that the professionals could not and, therefore, is known as the savior of the police force. Shinichi was born to Yusaku Kudo, a mystery writer and Yukiko Kudo a former movie star.. He is extremely intelligent, and even from a young age, was very intuitive and observant. Due to the influence of his father, and the general laissez-faire environment at home, he has long been an incessant and persistent reader, especially of mystery novels. Yusaku started taking Shinichi to crime scenes since sixth grade which inspired him to be a Detective.. Besides his intelligence, Shinichi is an extremely skilled soccer player. At first, it was to hone his reflexes but he grew fond of the sport. Shinichi is also known for his inability to sing, but was revealed to have perfect pitch. He is also a skilled violinist, taking after his idol Sherlock Holmes.
Relationships analysis
Since Shinichi is not featured as prominently as Conan throughout the series, only a few of his relationships with other characters have been substantially explored.

Ran Mouri
Shinichi Kudo and Ran Mouri

Ran Mouri is Shinichi's childhood friend and canonical love interest. They have known each other since as early as kindergarten and had been playmates since then, which caused some censure from Eri Kisaki. They are very close together, they have even been together as long as the time of children all the way to young adults, they have some what of a love-hate relationship in the beginning but when she met Conan (who is Shinichi but she doesn't know it), she told him that She was in love with him for some time, probably ever since they first met, which caused Shinichi/Conan to blush like mad. They are living together with her dad and solves crimes with her father (without her noticing), making him appear as a great detective for most of the cases that Shinichi has solved himself.<br>Conan has shared a great deal of affection to Ran since him being Conan including hugging, holding hands, and at even one time they slept in the same bed and even took a bath together (which caused him to get a nosebleed). Shinichi has confessed his love to Ran in the 4th movie non-canon 'Captured In Her Eyes' (which Ran mistook as his attempt to get her memories back). At one time he tried to confess his love properly (some viewers say to even propose) to Ran, but was interrupted by a case that got held there. Also, when Shinichi went missing, Ran was worried sick and she was afraid that something bad had happened to him and almost went to the police. It is also shown that she couldn't even sleep cause she missed him all to much. So what Shinichi used his bowtie to mimic his real voice and called her, telling her that everything's alright and he's getting a difficult case done. Throughout the series, they have a romantic relationship that started as childhood friends but develop into true love.

Ai Haibara
Ai Haibara is the third girl that seems to have somewhat romantic feelings for Conan/Shinichi, although she never truly admits it. Indeed, it is a mystery just exactly what she feels for him, whether friendship or otherwise. Some people, such as Conan's mother and Gin, have stated that she has feelings for Conan. It could be said that, because of their almost equal level of intelligence as well as similarities in their pasts (i.e. they're both victims of the APTX 4869), she finds it easier to talk to him.

His parents
Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo are both aware that Conan is in fact Shinichi.

Professor Agasa
Although not related by blood, there's a strong family-like bond between Shinichi and Hiroshi Agasa.

Heiji Hattori
Heiji is often referred to as Shinichi's detective rival from the West. Heiji discovers Shinichi's secret, but keeps quiet about it (though he does occasionally slip), and both become very good friends and partners whenever a case brings them together.

Toichi Kuroba
Despite the fact Toichi and Shinichi only met once prior to Toichi's death, it's worth mentioning Toichi referred to Shinichi as his "older brother" and himself as the "younger brother". This is because of Yusaku, Shinichi's father, being the father of the name of Kaitou Kid, Toichi's secret identity.

People who know Conan's real identity
List of characters who know Conan's identity

There are only a few characters in the series who know Conan's real identity. None of them have ever betrayed Conan's identity to date. The main characters to know the secret are Hiroshi Agasa, Conan's parents, Heiji Hattori and Ai Haibara. Also, Sharon Vineyard knows, but for unknown reasons, she has kept it a secret from the rest of the Organization. Eisuke Hondou, the younger brother of C.I.A. agent Hidemi Hondou, also knows and keeps Conan's secret. Kaitou Kid also knows Conan's identity, and whenever he tries to publicly steal, he reveals that he only wants to compete with Conan as thief and detective. Still, it is not clear whether he knows Conan's secret in the actual anime and manga, but Kid seems to realize there's something unusual about Conan.

Name origin
In Japanese etymology, the name Shinichi means "one truth", which Shinichi occasionally uses as a motto.

Conan Edogawa
