Kogoro, Ran, Conan, Heiji, and Kazuha are at a festival in Kumamoto when Denkyu, a student monk, asks them to solve a case of a disappearing body at the temple. Shakuren, the head monk, denies the body's existence and claims Denkyu is mistaken.
=== Resolution ===
<spoiler>After investigating, Conan and Heiji reveal that '''Shakuren''' the head priest is the one who has been concealing the crime that occurred.

* Using the trick left by Rinkyu and Bunkyu, the head priest hid the blood-stained section of each mat under the glass statue-cases which had bottoms lined with tatami-squares.

* During the second crime, the head priest rearranged the mats inside the room into a turbine pattern, so that the blood from the previous crime and the fake blood, in which both are in the center of the room, can be hidden in the corners. However, the head priest could not conceal the tabacco and alcohol stains under the cases, which was why they suddenly appeared post the second crime.

==== Motive ====
Shakuren reveals that the body was '''Denkyu's mother''', who abandoned him eighteen years ago. He reveals that she '''committed suicide''' after Shakuren harshly rebuked her for demanding her son back, whom she abandoned as a baby, when she could not even recognize which one of the monks at the temple he was. Out of anger, Shakuren told her to stay in the annex and experience the years of grief her son felt. His words broke her to the point that it drove her to suicide.</spoiler>
== Case 2 ==
=== Situation ===
The next day, Heiji takes Conan with him to participate in a reality television deduction competition between high school detectives Heiji Hattori, Natsuki Koshimizu, Junya Tokitsu, and Saguru Hakuba. While there, they are being tested, but Tokitsu declares that he has solved the mystery and decides to test his theory out. He says that it would take around 30 minutes. While the rest wait, they have dinner. During that they discuss the purpose of the lavender in the house, and Natsuki mentions that it reminds her of a murder mystery that took place around a year ago.
=== Resolution ===
<spoiler>After a thorough investigation, the culprit is revealed to be the detective of the South, '''Natsuki Koshimizu'''. Her real age is 20, and she had pretended to be a high school detective to lure them in, complete with using her old school uniform, but she made a mistake by talking about a strict school dress code, as it's unlikely they would have allowed her pierced ears. Natsuki confesses and explains she was searching for the detective whose inadequate investigation caused a massive tragedy.

The mistress of the Lavender Mansion was a mentally unstable socialite, who committed suicide by hanging a year ago. Natsuki's best friend '''Kana Mizuguchi''' worked as the lady's maid, with Renzo Kouya as the housekeeper; they were seen as possible suspects but were acquitted due to fact that there were no signs of foul play. Natsuki herself had visited the mansion and after investigating didn't find anything either.

Some time later, however, the investigation was re-opened after Tokitsu came by the case on holiday and believed that it was a murder; some new tricks had been used in the house, ''after'' the suicide, leading Tokitsu and the police to believe that the lady was killed and the murderer escaped using the trick. Because of this, Kana became the prime suspect, and she begged Natsuki to protect her from the "high school detective with a weird accent"; she ended up cracking from the pressure and committed suicide by throwing herself into the sea before Natsuki could clear her unfairly tainted reputation.

The thief and the one behind the original trick was revealed to be Tsuchio who planned to rob the estate at later date, whom Natsuki located and hired to pose as a producer. Renzo had been the butler in the mansion, and knew that the mistress was a suicide threat, but didn't say anything out of misguided loyalty. He had just hoped that the police would stop suspecting the maid.

Since Natsuki didn't know the detective's name, she went for the guy's gender and accent. The three other school detectives fit in this profile: Junya Tokitsu used an archaic male pronoun for himself (''shousei''), Heiji Hattori had a thick Osaka accent, and Saguru Hakuba's Japanese was odd since he lived abroad and got used to the foreign languages. She confronted Tokitsu first by tricking him into ''''sharing'''' their conclusions and he began bragging about his skills as well as confirming that he was the one who had solved the Lavender Mansion murder case, causing Natsuki to beat him to death with the hammer and created the locked room.

The trick to the locked room was to remove the window frame and then replace it after leaving. The screws holding the frame in are removed and cut short. The frame is replaced after the murderer exits by simply gluing it back into place with the short screws slid into their corresponding holes so the window looks untampered with. Natsuki kept the screw heads on her person, which served as evidence of her crime. The reason she pretended to be afraid of the thunder was to come up with a excuse to cover her ears because the wind could have exposed her pierced ears.

Lastly, the reason she gathered all the people was to have all those she had a grudge against die together with her on the island, as she had bribed the ship captain to remain silent else he wouldn't receive the rest of the money. She apologizes to Conan for having him die along with her but Conan replies that '''help will surely come'''. Shortly later, Kazuha, Ran, and Kogoro arrive with the captain after they notice Heiji's hat as a sign that he boarded that ship, and the captain spills the beans after receiving a Judo throw from Kogoro six times. Natsuki who is somewhat relieved comments that if God would allow it then she would really like to do a real Detective Koushien with them.
</spoiler>

== Trivia ==
* Although Heiji appeared to have met Saguru in the movie [[The Private Eyes' Requiem]], it was a movie, and therefore, non-canon. Moreover, Saguru didn't appear at all, since [[Kaitou Kid]] disguised as him. Thus, this is the first canon meeting between Heiji and Saguru.
* Heiji claimed to have solved more than 1,000 cases, which is true, even though he had to include searching for cats as a child.
* Saguru claimed that he solved about 500 cases, however that is only the cases he solved in Japan, and does not include the cases that he solved while studying abroad in England.
* Since Heiji has a problem with Saguru being the high school detective of the east, Saguru decided to adopt the role of "Guest from Abroad," and let Conan be the East's representative.
==== Evidence ====
* All of the air conditioners and microwaves were
==== Conclusion ====
==== Motive ====
The killer is '''Takashi Ichieda'''. Two years ago Mrs. Yone's granddaughter, Yaeko, died by drowning when she went searching for Reika and Nikaido, who were stranded on a small island in the sea. It turned out they took her swimming supplies and left her to die; Ichieda noticed the odd situation when Yaeko's body was found and asked them about it, but they denied everything and said they had not even seen Yaeko. Gotou had also asked them about Yaeko, but he didn't suspect them at all. Everyone else believed that Yaeko had simply drowned, with her grandmother even saying that she sacrificed her life to rescue Reika and Nikaido.

Ichieda, who was in love with Yaeko, kept his bad feelings to himself until Reika's 24th birthday. After isolating the group in the mansion, he first kidnapped Reika and kept her hostage in one of the bathrooms, then bound and gagged her inside a covered bath tub, getting everything ready so she would slowly drown automatically. The proof of this is Reika disappeared around 10 PM but she wasn't killed until 5 or 6 AM which means that she was left alive for 7 to 8 hours before her death. Second proof is her clothes, they couldn't possibly get that wet, no matter how much she struggled. Third proof is the duct tape and rope marks on the corpse, it is odd that she was restrained with both rope and duct tape when she had already had been restrained with rope. Ichieda switched the faucet with the shower so that he could fill the bath quietly. To prevent somebody finding the corpse in the tub, he burned out the bulbs beforehand to keep people from coming through and using the bathroom. Ichieda checked the bathtub himself and told the others that Reika was not there to fool them. He then created his alibi by staying with Kogoro during the murder. As soon as he could he confronted Nikaido, and when he admitted his share of guilt, Ichieda drowned him outside with his own hands and left his lifeless body there.

To throw people off again, Ichieda used the air conditioners and microwave to cause the lights to turn off by themselves. First, he set all the air conditioners to turn on simultaneously at a set time using their remote controls. Then, he set the microwave so that it would turn on at the same time as well. When the time came, the overuse of electricity within the mansion would would suddenly spark and would cause the breaker to overload causing the lights to go out. The proof is that the remote controls were still displaying the time that they were all set to 12:30, which is when the lights went out. Also, at the same time Conan heard the bell of the microwave. The microwaves there operate with dials so they will still work even without electricity. Another piece of evidence is when Conan touched the microwave, it was still warm. Lastly, a little while before the lights went out, Ichieda went into the kitchen with Conan and Kogoro to search for Reika. As they were leaving the kitchen he doubled back and set the timer on the microwave when no one was looking.

After turning off the lights, Ichieda broke a window in the dark and made it look like the killer ran away so that they would give chase. He pretended to get lost in the forest and then went back to the mansion and took the unguarded Ran to the kitchen and tried to drown her. He even drugged her beforehand so that she wouldn't be able to struggle. When he put the pills in, he could have turned the cup, moved the spoon, or done any number of things to identify the cup: all he had to do was avoid it. Also, it didn't matter who took the cup: It was just a coincidence that Ran was the one who took the drugged one. The attack on Ran wasn't intended to be fatal, he only needed a witness to throw suspicions off himself, by making everyone believe that the murderer was an outsider, and give fake evidence that the murderer had killed Reika in the same fashion.

Few hours later, a still restrained Reika drowned in the tub. Ichieda pulled her lifeless body out of the bathtub and left it next to said tub for everyone to find. The proof that only Ichieda could have committed the murder is the water on his undershirt. All of the suspects in fact have water on their shirts. However, the water on Goujo's sleeve is from when he washed his hands and the water on Mifune's collar is from when he washed his face. On the other hand, Ichieda's arms on his shirt had gotten soaked. This is proof that he took his jacket off first before water got on them. He took off his jacket so that it wouldn't get wet when he committed the murder. His elbows are wet because he rolled his sleeves up to take Reika out of the bathtub.

Ichieda admits that he killed Reika and Nikaido and tells the others about how they murdered the sweet and gentle Yaeko, who had gone to help them but was repaid with abandonment and death. Before he murdered them he asked them to tell him the truth they both confessed to murdering Yaeko. He then proudly says that the two deserved to be murdered for what they had done... but Mrs. Yone angrily calls him a fool. She then goes to Reika's corpse and closes her eyes, saying that even when she cannot forgive the two victims for what they did to Yaeko, she belives that no one deserves to die violently because whenever that happens, someone else will always cry and grieve and no one should feel what she felt, no one.</spoiler>
* In the anime, after Yone is angered by Ichieda's cruel and callous attitude and saddened by Reika's passing she also closes the lifeless Reika's eyes in sign of paying respect to her.</spoiler>
