Taking a prototype antidote causes [[Conan Edogawa]] and [[Ai Haibara]] to return to their original adult bodies for a short duration. The antidote lasts longer and has fewer side-effects than [[baijiu]]; the ones shown so far have typically lasted for about 24 hours or less. The transformation occurs as soon as the pill is taken, and there are no complications during the majority of the time that the antidote is in effect. However, when the antidote begins to wear off, Shinichi feels feverish, sweats profusely and experiences increasingly acute chest pain and heart palpitations. Shinichi reverts back into Conan soon after this.

Most of the times when Conan and Haibara have taken the prototype antidote, they were sick to some degree. It is unclear whether being ill is a requirement for the temporary antidote to act properly.

Unfortunately if a subsequent antidote dose is taken directly after the original dose, it works for far less time than the original dose. Taking the antidote frequently makes it less effective and shortens the active duration. The baijiu gave [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] and [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]] a limited time (maybe 15 to 30 minutes) reversion to adult form. Unlike Haibara's later temporary antidotes, the baijiu took a considerable time before it began to work, and only then after making their respective colds much worse. The transformation and reversion are heralded by repeated bouts of sharp chest pain centered over the heart which become more frequent as the transformation draws near. In the short time Conan and Haibara were in their adult forms, they were unwell, sweating, and breathing heavily. After the reversion back to child form, both Conan and Haibara seemed more taxed and ill than they started.

The baijiu antidote seems to be one time use only, as Haibara says that the body builds a resistance to the baijiu that makes it no longer work. Additionally, it may only work when the drinker is sick and thus has a weakened immune system as both Conan and Haibara used it while sick with colds. By the time of his death he had won four shogi titles. Many had high hopes that Kohji would win all seven of the major shogi titles.

Seventeen years ago, he died under [[Case from 17 years ago|mysterious circumstances]] when in the United States participating in a chess tournament, a game he also enjoyed. [[Ai Haibara]] suggests that Kohji may have been murdered with [[APTX 4869]] since a person with the same name appeared on the list of people killed by the poison. It has been discovered that [[Rum]] may have been involved with his death due to the dying message missing letters that could be arranged to spell "ASACA RUM".

Agasa reveals that a similar murder has happened recently so they put the investigation on hold. After Conan and Subaru solve that case, they decipher the meaning of the missing letters on the mirror of Kohji's room. Kohji's dying message from seventeen years ago was "ASACA RUM", so Rum may be involved in their deaths.

<spoiler>Seventeen years ago, Kohji went to USA for a chess competition. The night before the competition happened, Amanda Hughes, a fan of Kohji, visited and played chess with him. Amanda introduced [[Asaka|Rachel Asaka]], her bodyguard, to Kohji. She revealed Rachel is the daughter of Amanda's previous bodyguard who sacrificed himself to save Amanda from the killer's bullet, she raised and trained Rachel as her bodyguard. She had good martial arts and weapons skills, which made bad guys but both good ones couldn't approach her. Kohji said she was his ideal girlfriend and he also pointed out that Asaka's right eye's disease is Amaurosis Fugax. Rum hacked the hotel's cameras and used his left eye to recognize all Amanda's bodyguards in different places in the building and he had his men knock them all out. One of his man reported that Asaka and "a big man appears to be newly hired" are the only remain bodyguard, Rum lead a group of Black Organization members to Amanda's room. Asaka told Amanda that she couldn't contact any other bodyguard. Worrying something happened, Amanda lied to Asaka that she forgot a horse chess piece in Kohji's room and asked her to go there immediately as a favor. When Rum and his men came, Amanda said she met Rum when he was still a child fifty years ago and his nickname "Rum" is weird. Amanda told Rum she knew that they all did bad things under Renya Karasuma's order. She then asked how Rum and his men were able to knock out dozens of her most trustworthy bodyguards before revealing a Japanese police officer and SWAT would come soon. Rum revealed that his left eye's special ability helped him remember everything and the police wouldn't come because [[Vermouth|one woman]] in their organization used Amanda's voice to call off the phone call from the FBI. He then took one [[Silver Bullet (drug)|Silver Bullet]] out and threatened to kill Amanda to force Asaka appear to hold her as hostage and Amanda must join their organization. Amanda quickly swallowed the drug in order to protect Asaka. Threatening Amanda plan failed, Rum revealed to Amanda that "Rum" is not his nickname but the codename he got from his late father and quickly left to find Asaka, and he didn't notice that she left a dying message about Rum's dangerous eye with a horse piece and her wristwatch.

At the meantime, Kohji realized what happened, he asked Asaka to hide and he acted like he didn't know anything when the organization visited his room to find "an Asian-looking woman". Kohji persuaded Asaka to stay in his room for her safety but Asaka didn't want Kohji to be killed for helping her. Kohji knocked Asaka out with a stun gun and hid her in his bookshelf. Before getting unconscious, Asaka warned Kohji that the bad guys would kill him, he handed her his good luck charm - a bishop shogi piece and said "With the watchtower bishop, you can be sure of making a good move.I must carry my initial dream through to the end. (A better translate from its Kanji/Chinese characters meaning)". When the bad guys came, Rum noticed the books in bookshelf must have been touched so he wanted to check, Kohji told Rum he saw a piece of news including him gave a speech for Renya Karasuma thirty years ago to prevent him from checking the bookshelf, Rum let one of his man beat Kohji. Realizing Kohji would not reveal anything about Asaka, Rum decided to kill him. In his last breath, Kohji cut the mirror given to him by his mother to leave his dying message: CARASUMA.

The "big man appears to be newly hired" is Kuroda, who received a special mission meeting Amanda, realized something happened to Amanda because she didn't contact him when she was supposed to meet him that night, decided to find Amanda himself after the receptionist denied to give any information about her. When Kuroda found her room, Amanda was dead. He quickly ran into Kohji's room as Amanda had a meeting with Kohji that night and only found Kohji's dead body. The only thing he was able to do was take some pictures at the crime scenes. Asaka woke up and thought Kuroda was the one killed Kohji, she attacked him until she noticed Amanda's dying picture in his phone. This gave Kuroda a chance to knock Asaka out and he decided to carry her out of the hotel to protect her from the Black Organization, but not before informed the local police. Rum then realized Kohji hid Asaka in the bookshelf and noticed the bathroom was messed up badly, he tried to clear up the evidence but the bad guys had to run because the police were on their way. The organization chased after Kuroda after finding one of their men, who was knocked unconscious by Kuroda when he was trying to clean Kohji's room. While trying to get away from the bad guys, a car accident happened to Kuroda, Rum told his men to retreat because there were many people at the scene. Kuroda passed out, but Asaka managed to escape. The accident put Kuroda in a ten years long coma, it caused him to lose his right eye and his hair also turned white.</spoiler>

The police have already checked all of the items that resemble string and have tested for luminol. However [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]], [[Rei Furuya|Amuro]], and [[Masumi Sera|Masumi]] reveal that the weapon has already left the studio. The police carried it out because it was one of the victims belongings. The murderer had taken her knit hat and unraveled it and used it as the murder weapon and then knitted it back together using the drumsticks. Amuro reveals that the culprit is '''Rumi Kogure'''. The other two suspects had gone into the room to do things that couldn't have been planned. Where as Rumi was supposedly playing her keyboard with her back to the camera where no one could see what she was doing. She had secretly been knitting the hat back together. With the drums fixed in place, the placement of the selfie stick camera would be dependent on the position of the keyboard. Rumi just had to move the keyboard further away from the drums so that the others would have moved the selfie stick to in front of the cctv camera. She has also spiked the victims water bottle with sleeping pills to ensure that she was asleep.

The motive was that the victim had been telling Akane to drink lots of wine and scream into a pillow to get her voice back, but in actuality it was making her voice worse. Then she told Akane that her voice was withering and that she shouldn't even show up to the next gig. Later Akane committed suicide by jumping in front of a car. However it seems that was all a misconception. Akane had run out into the road to save a small child who was crossing the road to get his ball. The victim had believed that she was responsible for Akane's death, not because of her harsh words about her voice, but because she had made a deal with her not to speak until her voice had gotten better. This was why Akane ran into the road rather then shouting, because it would hurt her voice.

After the case, Masumi revealed to [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] and [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]] that the reason she became a detective was because of her oldest brother [[Shuichi Akai|Shuichi]], who is an FBI agent. Sonoko inquires if the person who taught Masumi the base was also from the FBI, but Masumi denies it. [[Rei Furuya|Amuro]] inwardly comments that the man was a member of the Metro Police Department Public Security Bureau and that Shuichi was the one who killed [[Scotch|him]].

Agasa has once again won a meal ticket and is taking the Detective Boys to a restaurant at the department store. On the way there Conan thinks over what he knows about Masumi and the girl who is living with her, who he thinks is named [[Mary]]. He starts to think that she might resemble someone else, but his thoughts are interrupted by Haibara. When they arrive at the department store they see it decorated for Christmas despite it not being Christmas yet. Ayumi and Haibara approach the makeup counter. Haibara demands that they get to try on some makeup since they are customers, but the counter workers try to deny them and ask where their mother is. They get the makeup anyway and the counter worker asks about Haibaras mother, and she responds that [[Elena Miyano|her mother]] has been dead since just after she was born.

After the meal Agasa reveals another surprise, that he had also won a shopping ticket so that they could buy themselves early Christmas presents. Ayumi, Genta, Mitsuhiko, and Haibara all walk off. Conan and Agasa observe the restaurant chef, Ujiyasu Hosogoe, getting told by another chef that a troublesome customer had called again, Ujiyasu told them to tell the customer to meet him in the stairwell. After half an hour passed Conan hears screaming coming from the stairwell and rushes in to find Ujiyasu has been stabbed. He said that the culprit ran down the stairs so Conan has the Detective Boys run to the stairwell and watch to see if the culprit ran down. The police are able to round up three suspects. The Detective Boys give three completely different descriptions of who they think is the culprit is, and Genta mentions that he thinks the culprit had the number 2 on them.

==== File 940 - Taking apart the Testimony ====
The first suspect, Takashi, says that he had been looking for an empty restroom. His hand was wounded when caught in the restroom door and he has a bandage on his right index and middle fingers. He has two kanji characters on the back of his hoodie. The second suspect, Mitsuko, had lost her wallet and had been running from floor to floor to find it, however it had been in her bag all along. She had been in a hurry to catch a tv show. She is wearing a face mask due to being sick, and it had gotten worse as she had been running. She has a broach that looks similar to the number 6. The third suspect, Masaru, was sweaty from eating Thai food and was hurrying to get home so that he could shower. His original reason for coming to the mall was because he heard that a soup served in a restaurant there was the same as one he served at his own restaurant. His sports jacket has the Tokyo Spirits logo with an overlapping T and S on it. In addition he had been limping a little due to athletes foot. All three suspects had known the victim. Takashi had worked for Ujiyasu in the restaurant until he was dismissed for bad behavior. Mitsuko lives next door to Ujiyasu, and her dogs often barked to loudly which disturbed him. Masaru had accused Ujiyasu of stealing his recipes three years ago which ended with a fight where they were both taken to the police.

Conan points out that the knife used to stab the victim had no fingerprints on it so the police ask the suspects if they had gloves. All three of them had gloves because it is cold outside. After the police leave, the Detective Boys go into more detail about their statements with Conan. Genta had seen the culprit as they passed by several members of the Haido High Basketball team. Mitsuhiko had seen the culprit as they had run through a grouping of mannequins and small billboards. When the culprit passed Ayumi, they were standing between her and a window, where light was shinning in and obscured the view. They had reached down as if they were scraping something off their shoe. Then a group of High School students passed through on a study tour, blocking Ayumi's view again.

The police find helium canisters that the culprit had used when calling the restaurant. Conan walks up to the police and announces he knows who the culprit is and that they can figure it out by walking through the testimonies. Conan explains several optical illusion effects which lead to each one of the Detective Boys giving different testimonies.

The culprit is '''Takashi Kamaya'''. He had checked the bottom of his shoe in such a fashion because of his injured hand. When he is wearing his backpack, it covers part of the kanji so that it looks like the number 2. When the police threaten to check his saliva against the saliva on the helium gas cans, he comes clean. He had previously brought his girlfriend to the restaurant after he had been fired, but he kept that from his girlfriend. He thought he could impress her with his knowledge of all of the food served there, and had dyed his hair and shaved to prevent being recognized. However Ujiyasu did recognize him and changed the recipe, which made Takashi look foolish. His girlfriend called him a liar and broke up with him. The chef had caused him to loose both his job and his girlfriend, which lead him to attack. But the chef, who has made through surgery, decides not to press charge against Kamaya because before all this they used to be friends. Kamaya is emotional over it.

Afterwards, [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]] rubs mascara off of her eye, and [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] sees that the smeared mascara makes her face look like that of the child [[Mary]] that [[Masumi Sera|Masumi]] is hiding.

Detective Chiba approaches the two female patrol officers Yumi Miyamoto and Naeko Miike, and asks them about the case that took place when they were patroling on October 4 in the Haido City area. Naeko thinks about Chiba being her first love and his two flaws of being too noisy when it comes to regulations and not remembering her from the childhood days. When they are unable to, he briefly mentions about an alien that could have occured on that day.

Wada Hina, a second year student at Haido High School, and also a (self-declared) rival of Ran in Karate, visits Detective Mouri Agency to seek Kogoro's help in searching for an UFO (Unidentified Flying Object). She claims it be a long and narrow shaped and having seen it next to Haido Park, where she was running as part of her club activity.

Upon Kogoro's remark of the mentioned UFO's shape and shape of cigar being 'similar', Conan wonders about the 'sister outside the domain' being similar to Haibara. He thinks if both of them are blood related, then, Akai and Haibara should be blood related too.

The four of them, head towards Haido Park, where Hina points out where she noticed the UFO. Conan remarks about the staircase in front of them, where Jodie-Sensei's friend Shibuya-Sensei was thrown down, and learns that Ran wasn't aware of it.
Hina mentions that the UFO could have flown from the direction of her school towards the Park. She talks about how a murder took place at her school in early October, while being under renovation.
They manage to enter in the school premises through a broken-lock door, despite entry being forbidden. They chance upon the murder site.

* '''The Case'''
The murder site is a concrete foundation, having distinct prints of two human bodies fallen on it in the middle and footstep prints leading to it. Detective Chiba, who happens to be on the site, explains that the victim was an UFO magazine editor named Nakatsu Kyuogo, 42 years old. The victim's face was sunk into the concrete, and was lying face-down. The cause of death was asphyxiation.
Next to the victim was Kuchiki Yuusuke, 38 years old, sunk in the concrete having fallen on his back. He used to submit photos to the UFO magazine, whose editor was Nakatsu. Both were seen arguing in the editing department, and hence Kuchiki had a motive.
Chiba explains that the victim didn't swallow concrete and there was no doubt that he was thrown in the concrete after being killed. And also that the asphyxiation was due to the victim's face being covered with a bag-shaped thing. He also tells about not finding the bag shaped weapon yet. There was also no wind on that day.
Kuchiki claimed that an alien came down from an UFO and killed Nakatsu while floating in air and then rode away.
Conan considers it an act of murder and not an alien's doing.

Hina mentions about the day of murder, October 4th, also being the day of Haido City Festival. Ran mentions that that day was unusually hot.

Chiba reaches the conclusion that Kuchiki had his hoodie on so that his hair wouldn't solidify in the concrete. He mentions that there were no accomplices found. He tells about the security camera footage outside the lock-broken door. The footage showed the two enter the door, and also a narrow, long and vertical shadow passing through above and below the screen towards Haido Park.
Hina mentions how the concrete slab was actually scheduled to be ready by summer but was delayed to autumn. Later, Megure scolds Chiba for having leaked undisclosed information to Mouri, due which the case becoming a fuss on the internet. Chiba later tells Sato how the suspect, Kuchiki changed his statement from 'having seen a strong light' and thus loosing consciousness to 'the killer being an alien'.

Later, Conan points out that Kuchiki owns a blog, and that he was arrested for illegal trespassing into someone's garden to take UFO photos, and also for speed driving to chase an UFO with his car. Conan points out how Kuchiki didn't post the story of the alien coming down from an UFO and killing someone, despite him being a UFO maniac.
Conan, Chiba and Mouri go to Kuchiki's house. Conan opens the upper shelf of a cupboard and notices a black plastic stuffed behind science books and a tape. Conan calls Ran to speak to Hina, and learns that the UFO seen by her was pitch balck.

'''Yusuke Kuchiki''' murdered Nakatsu because the latter had derided his latest effort in taking an actual UFO picture; the trigger for the murder was that Nakatsu suggested that he could submit even a picture of a ''fake'' UFO. Kuchiki used a solar balloon - a black, cylindrical plastic bag which floats if the air inside is warmed sufficiently - as the murder weapon, cutting off Nakatsu's breathing and forcing him into the concrete patch. Following Nakatsu's demise, Kuchiki let the balloon float away into the nearby park, where it eventually ended up in one of its trees, and then dropped himself onto his own deepened footprints (which would have betrayed his perpetration), erasing them. He merely concocted the "alien murderer" story in order to ward suspicion off himself.

However, Kuchiki committed a number of mistakes which eventually lead to his arrest:
*In order to faciliate his plan, he had practiced the disposal of the murder weapon long beforehand, leading to Hina's purported UFO sighting. The black practice balloon and several book about physics, in which the solar balloon effect was described, were found by Conan in Kuchiki's cupboard during the house search.
*The fact that Kuchiki had pulled his hood over his head despite the warm summer season, in order to prevent his hair from getting stuck in the hardening concrete.
*That he did not post his alleged "alien encounter" on the Internet, despite him being such an UFO fanatic, because he did not want anyone to search for and find the "UFO", which was still stuck somewhere in the park.
*The fact that, following [[The Scarlet Return|the attempt at Natsuko Shibuya's life]], security cameras were installed in the park, rendering Kuchiki unable to retrieve the balloon without being seen. The traces of Nakatsu's saliva and Kuchiki's fingerprints on the plastic would provide the crucial evidence of his murder act.

Miwako Sato and Miyamoto Yumi are seen taking a stroll. Yumi tells her how her boyfriend, Shukichi, had given her an envelope years ago to keep and not to open untill he collected all seven. Sato remarks that the envelope may contain marriage form. They pass by a announcement about the Ousho Competition, showcasing Shukichi Haneda's face on a big screen. Yumi finally realises that her boyfriend is the Taikou Meijin, and by 'collecting all 7', he meant the 7 grand titles of shogi.
Yumi rushes home along with Sato upon remembering that she kept the envelope in a fashion magazine and dumped that magazine in the garbage. They see that the garbage dump is empty.
The Detective Boys, who were passing by, involve themselves in the matter of finding the envelope. Conan points out that the day is not of recyclable trash, and concludes that the concierge might have returned the bundle back. Even though the bundle is found right in front of her apartment door, Yumi fails to find the envelope.

They meet the concierge, Hachitsuka Koroku, who calls Yumi as 'Chacha'. Yumi mentions that the concierge was a pickpocketing recidivist. When asked about the envelope, he shows the picture of the marriage form on his mobile phone. He says he forgot where he kept the envelope and asks them to search for it. Yumi correctly guesses that he purposely hid the envelope and demands it, to which he asks her to show him her resolution to be the Taikou Meijin's wife by finding the form.
Conan notices a laptop screen that says Yumi shall type in an 8 digit password to know where the form is, but only one attempt is allowed. While searching the room to find clues to the password, Genta comes across a odd piece of paper among the garbage can's contents.

==== File 946 - The True Married Couple ====
They try to decode the cipher. Meanwhile, Shukichi, who is playing the match, is growing uneasy for not recieving any reply from Yumi.
Yumi recalls out loud various memories with Shukichi. Hearing these, the concierge begans to believe that Yumi might turn out to be the resolute one to be the meijin's wife. Conan asks the concierge to turn on the heater because the room is getting cold, but the concierge replies that the air-conditioner is broken and they will have to bear with it. Conan wonders how the room was a bit warm when they had entered.
Yumi points out that the cipher on the paper is a copy and not hand drawn. Conan wonders what is being hidden by making the paper into a copy and why was it thrown in the garbage can. Finally Conan thinks it through, and makes an origami out of the paper to reveal the solution to the cipher.

Conan folded the sheet of paper into a shape of a crane in two ways. The paper then revealed the hint "root five" and "root three", in which the password were 22360679 and 17320508 respectively. When the second password was successfully entered, the computer's webcam revealed the envelope was in Yumi's breast pocket. It turned out that the old man, being a former pickpocket, stuffed the envelope into Yumi's coat when she entered his house, and adjusted the temperature so cold that Yumi would not take off the coat.
Meanwhile, Shukichi lost the last game and therefore was unable to acquire the seventh Meijin title. He then called Yumi to cancel the proposal. An angry Yumi then shredded the marriage registration form into pieces, shouting to him so that he would try to get the seventh Meijin title the next time. However, Yumi was unaware that the title match only occurs once a year.
Kohji was mentioned by Shukichi to Yumi Miyamoto on the phone. Shukichi says that he respected Kohji, and Kohji's motto was "one should stick with one's original plan". After Shukichi and Yumi's talk, Haibara asks Conan whether he knows the name [[Kohji Haneda]]. Conan answers that Kohji was a talented shogi player, but he died under mysterious circumstances when he went to the United States to participate in a chess tournament. At Agasa's resident, Conan and Haibara make research on Haneda Kohji. They learn that 17 years ago, he went to USA for a chess competition, but he was murdered in his hotel room. His room was left in a mess and cause of death is unknown. In another room in the same hotel, another murder took place. The victim was Amanda Hughes, a wealthy American with contacts in the [[FBI]] and [[CIA]]. She was a fan and an acquaintance of Haneda, and it was proved that she had visited him in his hotel room as her finger print were left on tea cups and other thing in the room. Like Haneda the cause of her death is unknown. In the pictures from the crime scene Conan spots a broken mirror with letters on it. P-T-O-N. Haibara thinks it's a part of a message PUT ON MASCARA, and explains that a cosmetic firm would give such mirrors along with products. Her sister had one, that was inherited from their mother. But it's unclear why Haneda would have such a mirror in his room. Haibara guess that Kohji Haneda was murdered because of his connection with Amanda Hughes.

Agasa mentions about having called by Inspector Megure, because his invention 'Clenching Scissors' was used in a murder that morning. Okiya Subaru happens to hear about it and decides to accompany Conan and Agasa to the crime scene.
The victim, Hiyama Kunihisa, is the president of a real estate company. His head is bludgeoned by a blunt weapon. He was assaulted in another room and then ran into the bathroom's dressing room, but the culprit finished him off after breaking the door open. The victim's right hand clenched the scissors having Aagasa's mark. They notice before entering that the floor is covered with shards of a glass.
The person who found the body first, is Senba Kazunori. He has a motive against the victim of selling the land he was working on without his consent. Detective Takagi mentions how it is impossible for Senba to have murdered the victim, considering the tight security. Also that the victim had nothing in the room but a mop and the faucet of the room was left open. Okiya says the case is similar to the Haneda Kouji case of 17 years ago.

Due to an increase in the number of transfer students to [[Teitan Elementary School]] over the past year, they have hired new teachers. Rumi is the new deputy homeroom teacher for class 1-B.

== Personality ==
Her personality seems to be that of a well meaning but really clumsy and incapable teacher. She approached the [[Detective Boys]] on the grounds that she is scared of the old warehouse at the school and needed them to come with her. However, once she was out of sight of them, her personality changed dramatically to that of a skilled fighter with a scary face, where she rendered three assailants unconscious with a broom in what could have been seconds.

So coordinated and precise, she can seamlessly create the illusion that her taking down foes is a mixture of clumsiness and pure luck. It is still unknown what style she uses, but she has shown proficiency in jojutsu and elbow strikes.

[[Sumiko Kobayashi]] introduces her class to the new deputy homeroom teacher, Rumi Wakasa. She appears to be a clumsy, shy and fearful person. Rumi approaches the Detective Boys for their help retrieving quicklime from the old warehouse in the school yard which causes them to come across a dead body. Over the course of the case Rumi uses her clumsiness to give hints to Conan on how to solve the case. Once she was out of their sight, her personality completely changed and she beat up a few robbers.

After they finish, Rumi treats them to dinner. But when they hear loud sounds from the neighbor, they goes over to check it out and finds a dead body and an unconscious man. Later back in Rumi's apartment, Conan finds a receipt that may prove that she knew the case would happen before hand and invited them there on purpose. Later Rumi incapacitates the culprit under the guise of falling over. The news crews outside happen to take a picture and Ayumi gives them Rumi's name. [[Hyoue Kuroda]] is shown reading the news article on his phone. [[Kanenori Wakita]] is shown reading a newspaper, but the article is not shown to us.

Rumi takes the Detective Boys camping. Conan is suspicious of her and thought of strange things that he noticed in her present. When they approach a group cooking curry over a fire near by, one of them mentions that he has an injured eye and nearly had to get a prosthetic eye. Rumi clenches up, and Conan notices her gripping something in her pocket. A little bit later one of the other campers is burned alive inside his own tent. Kuroda emerges from an adjacent tent and asks her whether the police should be called. However Rumi is standing in stunned silence, staring forward. When she snaps back to reality, Haibara seems to notice that Rumi can't see out of her right eye. Conan starts to wonder if Rumi is clumsy on purpose or that she cannot see so she is clumsy. When Kuroda seems to know the order that everyone introduced themselves in, despite originally claiming to have had earplugs in while sleeping. Rumi accuses him of spying on someone. Rumi has the Detective Boys build an acorn balance toy, which leads to the solution of the case. After Conan and Kuroda uncover the culprit, the culprit uses Ayumi as a hostage, Rumi manages to distract him long enough for Kuroda and Yuminaga to arrest him. Kuroda showed interest in the intimidating words that Rumi used to distract him. On the other hand, Conan becomes more suspicious of Rumi, and notices a strange object in her back pocket that has a shape similar to that of a Shogi piece.

At the end of the case, news of Shinichi being one of the detectives that had solved the case spread to the internet. Both Kuroda and Wakita were shown seeing the information on their phones. However, Rumi was shown sitting in the dark looking at the [[List of Black Organization related characters#APTX 4869 Victims|APTX victims list]] on her laptop, with a smirk on her face. The names [[Shinichi Kudo]] and [[Kohji Haneda]] appear to be highlighted. Additionally this is the first time we see her without a shirt on and she has scars on her upper arms as well as her back.

Rumi and Kobayashi take the Detective Boys out to collect edible plants. As they do so, Rumi detects the scent of blood blown by the wind and immediately thinks about Kohji's death. At the mention of good luck charms, Rumi remembers back to when Kohji said, "With the watchtower bishop, you can be sure of making a good move", while holding up a shogi bishop. Then he says, "So they're going to kill me despite that?" She then remembers him dead, with some sort of blood pouring out of his mouth, and she calls him a "foolish person", while pressing down on her right eye and crouching down on the ground. Conan sees her pressing down on her right eye and seems to connect it to an eye disorder. Rumi sees Conan tranquilizing Yamamura to make his deduction and gives a slight smirk. When Ayumi gives a 4-leaf clover to Rumi, saying that because Rumi is clumsy she needs good fortune, Rumi waits for the Detective Boys in front of her to look away, except Conan who is standing behind her looking at her, and throws away the 4-leaf clover. Conan notices her doing this and appears angry at her for it (or cognizant why she does not feel she needs it) as Rumi's face is in shadow.

Rumi and Kobayashi take the Detective Boys out to Hatoyama Farm to collect chicken. During the trip, she mentioned the words, Karasu being black, sly and a conspirator, causing Conan suspicious of her as she might personally know [[Renya Karasuma]] as [[Rum]] candidate. They meet up with [[Tooru Amuro|Amuro]] who is also going to the farm with another purpose. She seems to have a strange glare upon hearing Amuro is a detective.

Later, they receive a call from the [[Detective Boys Badge]], knowing that Conan, Ayumi, Mitsuhiko, Kobayashi, and Amuro gets trapped inside the farmhouse's cellar as the farm's owner brother uses Ayumi as a hostage and calling them for the police. However, they are unable to contact police by their phone. Also, Rumi notice the shogi piece which has been kept on her back pocket is missing and realize it has been picked by Amuro according to Genta.

After Conan are rescued from the cellar, Rumi use the badge as a bait to lure Amuro back into the cellar and knocked him out in order to retrieve the shogi piece. Rumi mentioned to Amuro that she lost her grip and let go for the trapped door cutting all the light, which cause him missed a step on the stairs.

Rumi is the new deputy homeroom teacher for [[Conan Edogawa]], [[Ai Haibara]], and the [[Detective Boys]]' class. She has approached them directly twice to lead them to the warehouse of the school that a robber group had used. Rumi is aware of three of [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]]'s gadgets given to the Detective Boys: the [[Wristwatch Flashlight|flashlight watch]], the [[Detective Boys Badge|detective badge]], and the [[Stun-Gun Wristwatch|tranquilizer dart]].

Among the Detective Boys, Rumi shows special interest in Conan for unknown reasons. In the old warehouse case, Rumi was only paying attention to Conan and purposely uses clumsiness in order to give Conan the necessary hints to solve the case. When a murder case occured in her apartment, Conan found a receipt that has that day's morning and noticed she has bought additional plates and mugs. Conan eventually realized the reason behinds his Sensei's actions. Rumi sensed a murder might occur in her apartment and was from the very beginning planning to invite the Detective Boys, especially Conan so he would become involved in the case. It seems Rumi is somehow testing Conan's intelligence and skills for unknown reasons.

Rumi at one point seems to trigger Haibara's skill at detecting Black Organization members, but Ai Haibara later tells Conan that she likes Rumi and wants to hear nothing bad said about her. Conan becomes increasingly distrustful of Rumi as time goes on, being reluctant to use his tranquilizer dart in front of her. So in one case, he leads Yamamura, who is to play the role of the sleeping detective here, to a tree to try to evade Rumi's scrutiny. Regardless, she still sees him use the tranquilizer dart on Yamamura and smirks. At one point, Conan notices Rumi pressing down on her right eye and seems to connect it to an eye disorder. Conan sees Rumi throwing away the 4-leaf clover Ayumi gave her and appears angry at her for it.

[[Sumiko Kobayashi]] is her junior superior as homeroom teacher.
However, in order to distract Chianti and Korn, she deliberately broke the umbrella and exposed Kobayashi to danger, so that she could take the opportunity to attack. This act is similar to "gambit" in chess, and was praised by Rum.

However, it is more likely that she blames Kuroda for not saving them in time.

Kohji said she is his ideal girlfriend and it's implied that she also has feelings for him. She thought of him as a "foolish person" because he sacrificed himself to protect her from the Black Organization. She keeps Kohji's good luck charm, the shogi bishop, which was handed by him and has memories of Kohji hiding her in his bookshelf "Huh? Why did I help you? I decided to do so. I must carry my initial dream through to the end. "She still seeks revenge for both Amanda and Kohji's murders.

Seventeen years ago [[Kohji Haneda]] and [[Amanda Hughes]] were found dead in their hotel rooms. Kohji had managed to leave a mysterious dying message that may indicate that a member of the [[Black Organization]] was involved.

== Description ==
Kohji Haneda, a shogi player, went to the US to participate in a chess competition at the Juke Hotel, however the day before the match he was found murdered in his hotel room. According to a website with numerous photos of the crime scene, his room was a total mess which was chalked up to a struggle between Kohji and his assailant. The website reported that the cause of his death remains unclear, but Haibara recalls his name was on the APTX 4869 victims list. On the same day in a different hotel room Amanda Hughes, a wealthy person who has contacts with both the FBI and CIA, was found murdered and the cause of her death is also unclear.

Amanda had been a fan of Kohji's and had been in contact with him in the past. She had visited his hotel room some time before the murder, her fingerprints were found on the door handle, sofa, tea cups, knife, and fork. After the murder there were tea cups, plates, and a hand mirror found smashed on the floor of Kohji's room. Several defensive wounds were found on Kohji's arms and his palm was bruised from gripping a pair of scissors very tightly. There were some bruises on his face as well. In Amanda's room, the sink in the bathroom was even left running. It is not known who was murdered first.

On the day of the murders Amanda's bodyguard, who she called "Asaka", disappeared. Currently Asaka is the prime suspect in both murders. Neither relatives or acquaintances of Amanda know when Asaka was hired on as her bodyguard. It is currently unknown whether Asaka is a given name or a surname. If it were a given name then it would be likely that Asaka would be female, however if it were a surname then it would not be possible to determine the gender. At some point Asaka was seen holding a hand mirror, which leads Gaito Hotta to believe that Asaka is a woman. As a bodyguard, it is thought that Asaka is skilled at bringing down opponents.

Rumi Wakasa has had a flashback of meeting Kohji. During this flashback, Kohji was in possession of a Bishop (Kaku) shogi piece and says a shogi proverb related to the piece. Rumi's flashback also includes Kohji's body after the murder. Currently, Rumi seems to be in possession of the Bishop shogi piece. She has carried the piece with her in her back pocket, as well as placing it face down on her desk near her laptop, showing its promoted side (Ryuma). She remembers Kohji has being a fool and, when Conan asked her what she was doing, she had difficulty to come back to her senses, which means this flashback really marked her.

Kohji kept the Bishop shogi piece as a good luck charm, which was missing at the crime scene of the murder. It was thought by the police the murderer took it.

Tsutomu Akai was either involved in the case or its aftermath. As a result, he made enemies with some really bad people (Black Organization) and sent a message to his family telling them to move to Japan for safety. Since then Tsutomu has not been seen, leading many to believe that he is dead. However, his body has never been found and his death is thus unconfirmed.

Gin comments that this case is a job in which Rum screwed up, clarifying that Rum was present, or at least involved some way or another, and that things did not happen according to plan back then.

Mary Sera took her family to Japan as instructed by her husband's text. Mary also gave birth to Masumi around that time. Shuichi Akai then left his family to study abroad in the United States with the intention of obtaining a green card and joining the FBI to find out what happened to his father. Shukichi Akai eventually leaves the family as well, changing his family name to Haneda. He also claims to be a non-blood brother of Kohji and possesses his fan that has his motto.

When Conan learns that the case involved APTX, he finds information about the case that had been uploaded to the internet. Even when it gets taken down the person who uploaded it tries to re-upload it. Conan thinks that it's almost if they are saying "Please help me solve this mystery!".

Gaito Hotta had obtained information that states that Asaka had been seen holding a hand mirror to claim that Asaka was a woman. However it is unclear whether this is first or second-hand information. Mary thinks that this information was "boring", seemingly expecting to know more information about Asaka from the so-called "soul detective" Gaito.

A woman whose name, Rumi Wakasa, bears similar spelling to the dying message of the Kohji case appears at Conan's school. When Hyoue Kuroda learns of this person's appearance on the news, he seems to make a connection between her and the Kohji case and implies that he might know her by saying "that's not like that person at all" when he was told she was going camping. She also keeps Kohji's good luck charm, the Bishop shogi piece inside her back pocket.

Currently the list of people who know about the case are as follows: Conan, Haibara, Agasa, Shuichi, Masumi, Mary, Kogoro, Gin, Vodka, Bourbon, Vermouth, Kuroda, and Rumi. Shukichi seems to be aware of Kohji's death, but it is unclear what he knows, or what his connection to Kohji is, since he is called a 'non-biological brother'.

== Dying message from Haneda==
After the murder there were tea cups, plates, and a hand mirror found smashed on the floor of Kohji's room. The mirror had writing on it that Haibara recognized as saying "PUT ON MASCARA", however it had been broken so that only "P T O N" remained. Kohji's palm was bruised from gripping a pair of scissors very tightly. The sink in Kohji's bathroom was even left running. It seems as if Kohji was attacked in the bathroom and turned the sink on, then ran water over the mirror to use the scissors to cut the mirror up, although it's unclear how he managed to do that during such circumstances. With the letters "P T O N" removed, the message remaining is "U MASCARA", which can be arranged to make "ASACA RUM". Though this is a way to decipher the dying message, it's unknown if this is the correct way to interpret the message, or that it was originally created by Kohji, or if the message was altered at all by someone.In fact,Kohji left the dying message even if he is suffering "bone-melting" pain.
It is theorized that the Bishop shogi piece in Rumi's possession may also be a part of the dying message, that she removed from the scene. There is a slight bruise in the palm of the hand that Kohji held the scissors, the piece may have originally been there.(Actually,Haneda gave it to her)

The Black Organization is aware of the dying message. Because of the "ASACA RUM" interpretation they seem to be chasing any references to ASACA that they find.

Some time after, Subaru discussed the dying message with [[Yusaku Kudo|Yusaku]], and both arrived at the conclusion that the message might only form one word: "CARASUMA", which refers to [[Renya Karasuma]], a multi-millionaire who is supposed to have been dead for at least twenty years, and who might be the Black Organization's head.

== APTX connection ==
Even though the cause of death is unclear in both cases, only Kohji's name appeared on the [[List of Black Organization related characters#APTX 4869 Victims|APTX 4869 victims list]]. However it is interesting to note that Kohji's name appeared two names below Shinichi's name on the list. Haibara thinks that the person who compiled the victims list may not have compiled it chronologically, but rather in some other fashion, like blood type.

In [[Volume 104|Chess Tournament Murder Case]],it is fully revealed that both of them were killed by APTX4869.

Since Haibara states that the drug she worked on was created from the burnt remains from the data left behind by her parents, she says that its possible that Kohji was made to ingest an early prototype made by her parents. Haibara hasn't mentioned whether Amanda Hughes' name is on the list or not.

Rumi, who we now know was present seventeen years ago, is currently in possession of the APTX victims list.

== Motive ==
The motive for the murders is unknown. In Kohji Haneda's case, Haibara suggest it might have been because he was close to Amanda Hughes. If that's true, then that means that Amanda was the main target, possibly because of her connections to the FBI and the CIA.

Conan suspects that Asaka is Rum, based on that the missing letters from the mirror spells out ASACA RUM. Conan also suspected that Mary is Asaka, by thinking that Asaka is a strong woman.

=== The one putting the case online ===
A mysterious individual, the uploader, is in possession of detailed crime scene photographs and case information. This includes pictures of Kohji's dying message hand mirror broken on the ground prior to Asaka removing a hand mirror from the scene. This unknown uploader posts this information online, seemingly asking for the case to be solved.

Information about the case was online at the time Okiya and Conan solved the "The Clenched Scissors and the Clipped Letters" case, but was removed by the beginning of the "Soul Detective Murder Case". The reason why the information was deleted and the identity of the one doing the takedowns (perhaps the uploader themselves or another force who wishes to scrub the essential details of Kohji's case from the internet) is still uncertain.

It should be noted that current Police Superintendent [[Hyoue Kuroda]] has access to the information on the website and seems to see some sort of connection to Elementary teacher [[Rumi Wakasa]]. Some fans speculate that it is possible that Rumi is the one uploading the information to the site due to her name being a close letter scramble of the dying message ASAKA RUM and her method of approaching Conan.

=== Kohji's palm bruise ===
In the picture of Kohji's hand, there are several bruises on the fingers and one on the center of his palm. These are presumed to be from holding the scissors tightly. Kohji's method of holding the scissors is unclear, but the bruises are consistent with looping one's thumb and index finger through the two rings so the rings as close to the base of the fingers. If the blade is angled across the palm and the other three fingers folded over, it makes a defensive-like pose. This grip does not explain the bruise in the hollow of his palm. If a defensive grip was used, then the bruise must have been caused by an item secreted in Kohji's palm he was gripping along with the scissors, holding the scissors another way, or another force altogether. It may also be of concern that despite supposedly gripping the scissors tightly in life, after Kohji was killed and the body photographed, the scissors were elsewhere nearby and Kohji's hand opened.

Kohji Haneda, a shogi player, went to the US to participate in a chess competition at the Juke Hotel, however the day before the match he was found murdered in his hotel room. According to a website with numerous photos of the crime scene, his room was a total mess which was chalked up to a struggle between Kohji and his assailant. The website reported that the cause of his death remains unclear, but Haibara recalls his name was on the APTX 4869 victims list. On the same day in a different hotel room Amanda Hughes, a wealthy person who has contacts with both the FBI and CIA, was found murdered and the cause of her death is also unclear.

Amanda had been a fan of Kohji's and had been in contact with him in the past. She had visited his hotel room some time before the murder, her fingerprints were found on the door handle, sofa, tea cups, knife, and fork. After the murder there were tea cups, plates, and a hand mirror found smashed on the floor of Kohji's room. Several defensive wounds were found on Kohji's arms and his palm was bruised from gripping a pair of scissors very tightly. There were some bruises on his face as well. In Amanda's room, the sink in the bathroom was even left running. It is not known who was murdered first.

On the day of the murders Amanda's bodyguard, who she called "Asaka", disappeared. Currently Asaka is the prime suspect in both murders. Neither relatives or acquaintances of Amanda know when Asaka was hired on as her bodyguard. It is currently unknown whether Asaka is a given name or a surname. If it were a given name then it would be likely that Asaka would be female, however if it were a surname then it would not be possible to determine the gender. At some point Asaka was seen holding a hand mirror, which leads Gaito Hotta to believe that Asaka is a woman. As a bodyguard, it is thought that Asaka is skilled at bringing down opponents.

Rumi Wakasa has had a flashback of meeting Kohji. During this flashback, Kohji was in possession of a Bishop (Kaku) shogi piece and says a shogi proverb related to the piece. Rumi's flashback also includes Kohji's body after the murder. Currently, Rumi seems to be in possession of the Bishop shogi piece. She has carried the piece with her in her back pocket, as well as placing it face down on her desk near her laptop, showing its promoted side (Ryuma). She remembers Kohji has being a fool and, when Conan asked her what she was doing, she had difficulty to come back to her senses, which means this flashback really marked her.

Kohji kept the Bishop shogi piece as a good luck charm, which was missing at the crime scene of the murder. It was thought by the police the murderer took it.

Tsutomu Akai was either involved in the case or its aftermath. As a result, he made enemies with some really bad people (Black Organization) and sent a message to his family telling them to move to Japan for safety. Since then Tsutomu has not been seen, leading many to believe that he is dead. However, his body has never been found and his death is thus unconfirmed.

Gin comments that this case is a job in which Rum screwed up, clarifying that Rum was present, or at least involved some way or another, and that things did not happen according to plan back then.

Even though the cause of death is unclear in both cases, only Kohji's name appeared on the [[List of Black Organization related characters#APTX 4869 Victims|APTX 4869 victims list]]. However it is interesting to note that Kohji's name appeared two names below Shinichi's name on the list. Haibara thinks that the person who compiled the victims list may not have compiled it chronologically, but rather in some other fashion, like blood type.

In [[Volume 104|Chess Tournament Murder Case]],it is fully revealed that both of them were killed by APTX4869.

Since Haibara states that the drug she worked on was created from the burnt remains from the data left behind by her parents, she says that its possible that Kohji was made to ingest an early prototype made by her parents. Haibara hasn't mentioned whether Amanda Hughes' name is on the list or not.

Rumi, who we now know was present seventeen years ago, is currently in possession of the APTX victims list.

== Motive ==
The motive for the murders is unknown. In Kohji Haneda's case, Haibara suggest it might have been because he was close to Amanda Hughes. If that's true, then that means that Amanda was the main target, possibly because of her connections to the FBI and the CIA.

* Given that the Romanized spelling of Asaca and Rum in the dying message is important, it seems relevant to note that the Romanized spelling of "Kohji" was changed for the anime version to "Kouji".

Conan suspects that Asaka is Rum, based on that the missing letters from the mirror spells out ASACA RUM. Conan also suspected that Mary is Asaka, by thinking that Asaka is a strong woman.

=== The one putting the case online ===
A mysterious individual, the uploader, is in possession of detailed crime scene photographs and case information. This includes pictures of Kohji's dying message hand mirror broken on the ground prior to Asaka removing a hand mirror from the scene. This unknown uploader posts this information online, seemingly asking for the case to be solved.

Information about the case was online at the time Okiya and Conan solved the "The Clenched Scissors and the Clipped Letters" case, but was removed by the beginning of the "Soul Detective Murder Case". The reason why the information was deleted and the identity of the one doing the takedowns (perhaps the uploader themselves or another force who wishes to scrub the essential details of Kohji's case from the internet) is still uncertain.

It should be noted that current Police Superintendent [[Hyoue Kuroda]] has access to the information on the website and seems to see some sort of connection to Elementary teacher [[Rumi Wakasa]]. Some fans speculate that it is possible that Rumi is the one uploading the information to the site due to her name being a close letter scramble of the dying message ASAKA RUM and her method of approaching Conan.

=== Kohji's palm bruise ===
In the picture of Kohji's hand, there are several bruises on the fingers and one on the center of his palm. These are presumed to be from holding the scissors tightly. Kohji's method of holding the scissors is unclear, but the bruises are consistent with looping one's thumb and index finger through the two rings so the rings as close to the base of the fingers. If the blade is angled across the palm and the other three fingers folded over, it makes a defensive-like pose. This grip does not explain the bruise in the hollow of his palm. If a defensive grip was used, then the bruise must have been caused by an item secreted in Kohji's palm he was gripping along with the scissors, holding the scissors another way, or another force altogether. It may also be of concern that despite supposedly gripping the scissors tightly in life, after Kohji was killed and the body photographed, the scissors were elsewhere nearby and Kohji's hand opened.
