While preparing to shoot them, Vermouth slips off and is saved from falling to her death by the two teens.

At the end of [[Clash of Red and Black]], [[Shuichi Akai]] faked his death with the help of [[Rena Mizunashi]] and [[Conan Edogawa]].

The plan was to have Rena Mizunashi meet with Akai and pretend to shoot him. To make it look realistic for Gin and others involved, [[wikipedia:Blank (cartridge)|blank cartridges]] and blood packets with [[wikipedia:Squib_(explosive)|small detonators]] would be used. Akai would then pretend to die and fall down in the truck. While Rena set the detonator, Akai would place [[Rikumichi Kusuda]]'s prepared body in his place and hide out of sight. The two would then leave.

As it happened, [[Jodie Starling]] used one of Conan's two cellphones with Rikumichi's fingerprints on it. She thought they were Akai's and when she went to validate the identity of the body with the police, the fingerprints matched with those of the corpse and Akai's death was then 'verified'.

==Background==
After the main events of [[Clash of Red and Black]], [[Gin]] is suspicious of how easy it was to recover [[Rena Mizunashi]] from the FBI and that [[Shuichi Akai]] didn't make a strong move. Gin thinks Akai is still hiding something and that doubt is relayed to [[anokata|the boss]], who plans a test of Kir's loyalty. Gin meets with Kir and conveys the boss's ultimatum: Kir must kill Akai in order to regain the Black Organization's trust. Akai and Kir meet at Raiha pass, where Rena shoots Akai twice and blows up the truck with his body inside; however, several abnormalities surrounding the circumstances of Akai's death invite the possibility that Akai faked his death with [[Conan]] and Mizunashi Rena's help.

==Initial Planning==

After the death of Black Organization agent [[Rikumichi Kusuda]], [[Shuichi Akai]] and [[Conan]] went to talk to [[Rena Mizunashi]] after getting [[Eisuke Hondou]] to "wake her up". They spoke with her about sneaking her back into the [[Black Organization]], received her promise to cooperate, and began to formulate a plan on how to smoothly send Rena into the Organization. At that point, Akai figured that the current plan to return her would seem suspiciously easy to the Black Organization, so they likely wouldn't trust Rena and therefore require her to prove her loyalty. Akai, who has experience in the Black Organization and knows how they think<ref name=600p7>Manga File 600 pg 7, All or nothing...</ref>, guessed the requested task might be to kill him, so he decided to prepare appropriately, to be safe. This was the time frame when the plan for his death was most likely formulated.

At their disposal were two important articles: Rikumichi's body, for use as Akai's body double, 
and Conan's two identical phones, one of which has Rikumichi's fingerprints on it from the time when Conan performed a test to determine the identity of the BO operative in the hospital.<ref name=597p14>Manga Volume 51 File 11 page 14, The Fake Patient</ref> Akai planned to later hold the phone, fingertips covered in glue, to later trick the FBI into thinking Rikumichi's fingerprints are Akai's.

==Conan and Akai's preparations: Setting up the phone trick and Akai's body double==

Akai covers his hands with glue so that he will not leave fingerprints. One clue to this matter is the fact that he at one point dropped a can of coffee, fingertips slippery. In the hospital during the FBI planning meeting, Akai takes Conan's phone (the one with Rikumichi's fingerprints) with his right hand.<ref name=602p10>Manga Volume 58 File 5 pg 10-11, Last Resort</ref> This hand is the one Rikumichi used to handle the phone,<ref name=597p14/> though Akai is left-handed and would naturally use that hand instead. Jodie remembers this later on, an important part to make matching the fingerprints viable as a means of identification. Meanwhile, either Conan or Akai steals Jodie's phone and causes it to malfunction,<ref name=607p15>Manga Volume 58 file 10 pg 14, Camel's Past</ref> perhaps by dropping it in water like Conan did to Rikumichi's<ref name=598p14>Manga Volume 58 File 1 pg 14, Pursuit and...</ref>. This gives Conan the opportunity to loan Jodie the one with Rikumichi's fingerprints on it.<ref name=607p15/> 
Sometime before Akai and Rena's meeting, Akai and Conan abscond with and prepare Rikumichi's body to look somewhat like Akai. The time frame for this could be the night before the strategy meeting after the fake death plan was devised or after Rena was returned to the Black Organization but before she called to meet with Akai.

==Rena and Akai's preparations: Faking the gunshots for the camera==
Before Rena is returned to the Black Organization, she and Akai discuss the timing and the location of the fake gunshots. They decide on the lung and forehead for reasons [[#Rena uses psychological traps to trick Gin|explained later]]. Akai prepares fake blood packets and small detonators, a small remote to detonate them with, and protectors for the skin. Rena obtains [[wikipedia:Blank (cartridge)|blank cartridges]], likely from the FBI or Yukiko, and hides them on her person since she will be under watch and may be searched by the Black Organization. She might carry a few different calibers for different models of handguns.

==Akai and Rena's meeting==
With Akai, Kir, and Conan's prep work done, the FBI's plan to return Rena with the vans takes place and Rena successfully returns to the Black Organization. As predicted, she is soon tasked with killing Akai.<ref name=606p15>Manga Volume 58, File 9, pg 15: "Friday the 13th"</ref> Akai gets the expected call from Rena, and stops James Black from calling Jodie to prevent the other FBI from interfering with the plan.<ref name=607p12>Manga Volume 58, File 10, pg 12: "Camel's Past"</ref> When Akai grabs James' hand to prevent him from dialing, James feels the glue, so Akai is forced to reveal the plan. Akai heads out after loading Rikumichi's body in the backseat of his truck. His model truck probably has a backseat/extended cab because it has rear side windows, though he also could have loaded Rikumichi's body onto the covered bed<ref name=608p11>Manga Volume 58, File 11, pg 11: "Spell of Magic"</ref> and moved the body to the backseat when he reached Raiha pass before meeting Kir. Kir places the bomb by the corpse and leaves, allowing Akai time to maneuver off-camera. He leaves his phone in Rikumichi's pocket, making sure that the right hand is protected in the pocket for later fingerprinting.<ref name=609p6>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pg 6: "Wedge of Steel"</ref> The bomb destroys Rikumichi's face and obscures the self-inflicted powder burn.

The identities of the accomplices who would have timed the accident is unclear at this point; Agasa and Conan were tied up with the [[Clash of Red and Black|Shiranpuri case]] at the time, so someone else likely would have been involved. The FBI, other than James, who coincidentally found out at the last minute (and thus too late to help), were unaware that Akai faked his death, so it would have to be someone else whom Akai trusts. Yukiko, who was later shown to be working with Akai, is one possibility. It is also possible the assistants are the two subordinates whom Akai asked to follow Yukiko and the Detective Boys in the [[Secret of the Tohto Film Development Studio|movie pre-screening murder case]].

If Rikumichi Kusuda committed suicide, he would normally shoot himself in the head, and even if his body was to be burnt, the evidence would remain.
Around the time the Black Organization lost contact with Rikumichi, another person was shot in the head and then burnt, and identification was found using a fingerprint match. Normally, a burnt corpse would have marred and unreadable fingerprints, but Vermouth claims that "he's that kind of guy," meaning that Shuichi Akai would shoot a shotgun with one hand, the other in his fireproof trouser pocket. Bourbon believes that Akai intended the hand to be found so that the fingerprints could be compared and his death could be confirmed, though Vermouth claims that the conversation in the video taken from Kir's hidden camera wasn't staged; as an actress, she believes that Akai's lines were not scripted. Though Bourbon's full reasoning has yet to be revealed, Bourbon is very aware that Conan plays a big role in this façade.

Bourbon deduces that the trick to Akai's death was a simple body switch. The fingerprints on Conan's phone were indeed Rikumichi's, and the reason why Akai's fingerprints didn't show up on the phone was because he laced his fingertips with glue. This is also the reason why his hand slipped while holding his coffee. Bourbon also deduces that Kir was working with Akai to fake his death. He hypothesizes that Akai was given a device by Professor Agasa that squirts fake blood when a blank is fired, hence the blood on his head, and that it was anticipated that Gin would want a headshot as the coup de grace, thus allowing them to prepare the device beforehand. Bourbon realizes that Conan was behind this whole plan due to Akai's presumed last words. "Who would have thought that it would come to this" was really "who ''besides him'' would have thought it would come to this," with "him" being Conan.


==Problems with this technique==
The gunshot in Rikumichi’s body is through his temple,<ref name=598p16>Manga Volume 58 File 1 pg 16, Pursuit and...</ref> but when Akai “died”, he received a gunshot directly to his forehead from the center. Also, Rikumichi didn’t have a lung shot. The second shot could have been added post mortem, but the coroner might be able to tell even with the burning.

The second problem is using blanks at such close range. Although blanks lack the bullet part, the weapon will still discharge a cloud of hot gas called [[wikipedia:Muzzle flash|muzzle blast]] that may burn anything close. Also, any shrapnel in the gun or a bullet replacement such as a wad of paper could be propelled out at high enough speeds to be potentially lethal. “Crimped blanks” exist, which lack such a wad, but that would not prevent the muzzle blast. Gosho Aoyama has ignored the actual dangers of blanks for dramatic license; however, the presence of a burn scar on [[Scar Akai]]'s right side of the face could suggest muzzle blasts were actually considered (and Bourbon may have designed the disguise with this idea in mind, therefore having muzzle blast burns in the places where he was shot.)

* The place name '''Raiha Pass''', the location where Akai supposedly died, is derived from '''Reichenbach Falls''', the location where Sherlock Holmes and James Moriarty apparently fell to their deaths at the end of ''The Final Problem''. *The fake death contraption has been used previously in the manga. At the end of [[Clash of Red and Black]], [[Shuichi Akai]] faked his death with the help of [[Rena Mizunashi]] and [[Conan Edogawa]].

The plan was to have Rena Mizunashi meet with Akai and pretend to shoot him. To make it look realistic for Gin and others involved, [[wikipedia:Blank (cartridge)|blank cartridges]] and blood packets with [[wikipedia:Squib_(explosive)|small detonators]] would be used. Akai would then pretend to die and fall down in the truck. While Rena set the detonator, Akai would place [[Rikumichi Kusuda]]'s prepared body in his place and hide out of sight. The two would then leave.

As it happened, [[Jodie Starling]] used one of Conan's two cellphones with Rikumichi's fingerprints on it. She thought they were Akai's and when she went to validate the identity of the body with the police, the fingerprints matched with those of the corpse and Akai's death was then 'verified'.

==Background==
After the main events of [[Clash of Red and Black]], [[Gin]] is suspicious of how easy it was to recover [[Rena Mizunashi]] from the FBI and that [[Shuichi Akai]] didn't make a strong move. Gin thinks Akai is still hiding something and that doubt is relayed to [[anokata|the boss]], who plans a test of Kir's loyalty. Gin meets with Kir and conveys the boss's ultimatum: Kir must kill Akai in order to regain the Black Organization's trust. Akai and Kir meet at Raiha pass, where Rena shoots Akai twice and blows up the truck with his body inside; however, several abnormalities surrounding the circumstances of Akai's death invite the possibility that Akai faked his death with [[Conan]] and Mizunashi Rena's help.

They spoke with her about sneaking her back into the [[Black Organization]], received her promise to cooperate, and began to formulate a plan on how to smoothly send Rena into the Organization. At that point, Akai figured that the current plan to return her would seem suspiciously easy to the Black Organization, so they likely wouldn't trust Rena and therefore require her to prove her loyalty. Akai, who has experience in the Black Organization and knows how they think<ref name=600p7>Manga File 600 pg 7, All or nothing...</ref>, guessed the requested task might be to kill him, so he decided to prepare appropriately, to be safe. This was the time frame when the plan for his death was most likely formulated.

At their disposal were two important articles: Rikumichi's body, for use as Akai's body double, 
and Conan's two identical phones, one of which has Rikumichi's fingerprints on it from the time when Conan performed a test to determine the identity of the BO operative in the hospital.<ref name=597p14>Manga Volume 51 File 11 page 14, The Fake Patient</ref> Akai planned to later hold the phone, fingertips covered in glue, to later trick the FBI into thinking Rikumichi's fingerprints are Akai's.

Akai covers his hands with glue so that he will not leave fingerprints. One clue to this matter is the fact that he at one point dropped a can of coffee, fingertips slippery. In the hospital during the FBI planning meeting, Akai takes Conan's phone (the one with Rikumichi's fingerprints) with his right hand.<ref name=602p10>Manga Volume 58 File 5 pg 10-11, Last Resort</ref> This hand is the one Rikumichi used to handle the phone,<ref name=597p14/> though Akai is left-handed and would naturally use that hand instead. Jodie remembers this later on, an important part to make matching the fingerprints viable as a means of identification. Meanwhile, either Conan or Akai steals Jodie's phone and causes it to malfunction,<ref name=607p15>Manga Volume 58 file 10 pg 14, Camel's Past</ref> perhaps by dropping it in water like Conan did to Rikumichi's<ref name=598p14>Manga Volume 58 File 1 pg 14, Pursuit and...</ref>. Sometime before Akai and Rena's meeting, Akai and Conan abscond with and prepare Rikumichi's body to look somewhat like Akai. The time frame for this could be the night before the strategy meeting after the fake death plan was devised or after Rena was returned to the Black Organization but before she called to meet with Akai.

==Rena and Akai's preparations: Faking the gunshots for the camera==
Before Rena is returned to the Black Organization, she and Akai discuss the timing and the location of the fake gunshots. This is also the reason why his hand slipped while holding his coffee. Bourbon also deduces that Kir was working with Akai to fake his death. Bourbon hypothesizes that Akai was given a device by Professor Agasa that squirts fake blood when a blank is fired, hence the blood on his head. They also anticipated that Gin would want a headshot as the coup de grace, which would be why they prepared the device beforehand. Bourbon also deduces that Conan was behind this whole plan from Akai's presumed last words. "Who would have thought that it would come to this" was really "who ''besides him'' would have thought it would come to this," with "him" being Conan.


==Problems with this technique==
The gunshot in Rikumichi’s body is through his temple,<ref name=598p16>Manga Volume 58 File 1 pg 16, Pursuit and...</ref> but when Akai “died”, he received a gunshot directly to his forehead from the center. Also Rikumichi didn’t have a lung shot. The second shot could be added later post mortem, but the coroner might be able to tell even with the burning.

The second problem is using blanks at a close range. Although blanks lack the bullet part, the weapon will still discharge a cloud of hot gas called [[wikipedia:Muzzle flash|muzzle blast]] that will burn at close range. Also, if the blank has a wad of paper or the like replacing the bullet or if there is shrapnel in the gun, it can be propelled out at high speed and be lethally driven into the body at close ranges. “Crimped blanks” exist which lack a potentially lethal wad, but that would not prevent the muzzle blast. Gosho Aoyama has ignored the actual dangers of blanks for dramatic license; however, the presence of a burn scar on [[Scar Akai]]'s right side of the face could suggest muzzle blasts were actually considered (and maybe Bourbon designed the Scar Akai disguise with the idea that Akai was shot with blanks in mind, therefore having muzzle blast burns in the places where he was shot.)

* The place name '''Raiha Pass''', the location where Akai supposedly died, is derived from '''Reichenbach Falls''', the location where Sherlock Holmes and James Moriarty apparently fell to their deaths at the end of ''The Final Problem''. It is later revealed that Sherlock survived the fall, but decided to fake his own death and go into hiding in order to protect himself from Moriarty's henchmen.

*The fake death contraption has been used previously in the manga. Yukiko may have been able to supply similar theatrical components to Akai and Kir before she was returned to the Organization the following day.

*Excluding Akai's apparent death, [[Gosho Aoyama]] has never killed off any character who has appeared in more than one case, much less a protagonist. The closest situation was the flashback to the death of [[Jinpei Matsuda]] in "The Trembling Police Headquarters" arc,<ref name=Matsuda>Manga Volume 36 Files 5-11, Volume 37 File 1: Trembling Police Headquarters</ref> but it was stated he died at the outset. == Background ==
Not much is known about Irish, except that he had a lot of respect for [[Pisco]]. It is unknown whether he ever killed anyone, but it is assumed that as a member of the Organization, he has in the past.

== Personality and Skills==

Irish seems quite smart, and endowed with deduction skills, as he manages to find out that Conan is actually Shinichi relatively quickly when he has only met him once. He also becomes suspicious about Conan only from hearing a few comments from other officers. However, he is far from being as shrewd as Conan in case solving, as during the police investigation, he is limited to recording the facts without suggesting any useful ideas.

He has been shown to be skilled in disguising himself, although his large stature constrains him to play only characters of that body type. He is also not as skilled as Vermouth in this practice. Despite these setbacks, he manages to remain undiscovered until the end of the movie.

Irish is a capable martial arts fighter whose strong body can count on well-mastered battle techniques. He single-handedly knocks out six police officers and a security employee, although it is very likely he hit them from behind. In addition, he is able to stand up to Ran in a hand-to-hand fight, defeating her after a balanced confrontation, though his winning strike may have relied on the element of surprise. This does not mean that Irish always benefits from advantages during his fights, as it has been shown that, unarmed, he could defeat a criminal carrying a stun gun with a single punch. He is just as precise when he uses guns as when he fights with his fists. For instance, he disables all of Conan's gadgets by firing at them without hurting him in any way.

Irish shows no hesitation at using lethal and ruthless force. He seems to enjoy challenges and appreciates Ran's karate skills. Confrontations appear to be enjoyable for him, continues to hunt Conan after beating him down.

As other Organization members, he has a high pain tolerance, staying conscious after a very bad fall down metal stairs and after having been shot with a sniper.

His rank in the Organization has not been revealed, but the way that the other members act with him would imply that he does not benefit from a high position. Gin scolds him like a subordinate and does not hesitate in giving the order to kill him. He appears to take this decision without deliberating, without fearing any consequences and, above all, without an order from the Boss of the Organization - whereas he needed a direct order to eliminate the executive agent [[Pisco]]. Nevertheless, Irish declares to Conan that he is going to bring him to his boss, which could suggest that his rank is high enough to directly contact him.

== Plot overview ==
Irish disguised as [[Kiyonaga Matsumoto]] to infiltrate the Tokyo Metropolitan police and retrieve a missing data card with information on the Organization's Non Official Covers. This data card is possessed by the culprit of a large-scale serial murder case. While following the investigation, Irish becomes curious about Conan, researches him, and eventually discovers that he is actually Shinichi.

The evolution of the investigation leads all the police inspectors to the [[Wikipedia:Tokyo Tower|Tokyo Tower]]. Knowing that he is going to catch the culprit there, Irish knocks the other detectives out, helps Conan to defeat the criminal, and recovers the data card. But he then has to fight against Conan himself, and against Ran, who was looking for him and finally found him in the tower. After getting rid of her, he chases Conan until the roof of the tower. At the very moment that Irish gains a decisive advantage over him, he is found by the Organization's helicopter. Gin, recording that he has the data card in his possession, and that his cover has been undisclosed - as Vermouth had signaled to him that the real superintendent had been found - orders his death. He is shot by Chianti, but is not fatally wounded. Conan then tries to carry him to a safe place, but Gin, noticing this attempt, asks Chianti to fire again.

Irish protects Conan from the sniper's bullet with his own body, a movement that causes his death. His last words are "Shinichi Kudo...keep coming...after us."

Irish admires Pisco and considers him to be like a father. He is therefore devastated when Pisco is cold-heartedly executed by Gin.

He sees him as a cold-hearted bastard and searches for a way to take him down in the Organization. To do so, he desires to show his Boss the mistake Gin made when he did not kill Shinichi - to provoke his disgrace. This even leads him to act against the Organization's projects since he does not reveal Shinichi's true identity for this reason.
Besides, Irish's enmity is mutual. Gin talks coldly to him, scolds him, and exhorts him to do the job he has been assigned correctly. This job is the only reason Gin even speaks to him, and after the task is completed, he immediately orders Pisco's death.

While their relationship is unknown, Vermouth is the only member to show sympathy or respect to Irish. This is given when she reveals his codename to Conan, adding that Irish whiskey is nicely distilled, with a mild taste. Conan tries to carry Irish's body out of Chianti's range, telling him he will get medical treatment. This is probably because he wants Irish to supply information about his Boss' location, and though Conan/Shinichi is known for saving lives.

Deciding to go bowling after they are rained out for tennis, they are met by [[Makoto Kyogoku|Makoto]], who engages Sera in a fight after mistaking her for a boy interested in Sonoko. After this is straightened out, we learn that he was attacked by teacher Masahiro Tanba, who was drunk. His coworker Sunami Masaki took him to the car to calm down. Makoto soon leaves to nap in the car, not finding bowling to be his strong suit. After a while, math teacher Michiko Monna becomes worried about Tanba, and in going to check on him, finds him missing. They all check around the local bars, but the missing teacher is found drowned in a portable toilet, and Makoto becomes the prime suspect due to the strength required for such a feat. He also had the opportunity, remaining in the parking lot during the estimated time of death.

S. California's UTB, United Television Broadcasting's free digital television station began to re-broadcast already dubbed Case Closed episodes on August 21st, 2011. The next two-episode block was scheduled for Saturday, August 27th, followed by two more episodes on Sunday, August 28th. The episodes were broadcasted at 6:30 a.m and repeated at 10:30 a.m the same day. A one-episode block also aired at 10:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays as well.

Incidentally, the catchphrase for [[Masumi Sera]] is 'Case Closed' (whether it's intended as a reference or coincidental is unspecified).

As of 2013, only one Case Closed branded video game was released, which was [[Detective Conan: The Mirage of Remembrance|Case Closed: The Mirapolis Investigation]], which was a Nintendo Wii exclusive title and released only in Japan and Europe. It features the English voice cast from the Anime for the English version, and has minor changes in script. It is so far the only English DC Game.

As of April 2013, Funimation was renewed the Case Closed license "For Future Use". Additionally on April 2nd 2013, Funimation announced Starting April 16th 2013 seasons 1-5 would be made available digitally through many online vendors, starting with iTunes, Playstation Network and Xbox Live. Season 1 will be available April 16th, season 2 and 3 in May, and Season 4 and 5 in June. ==Critical reception==

The series has been well received in Japan, with the anime adaptation ranking in the top twenty in [[Magazines#Animage|Animage]]'s polls between 1996 until 2000, where it dropped below the top twenty. In the Japanese TV anime ranking, Detective Conan often ranked the top six. It has even been used as a mascot to promote citizens to follow the law. The English adaption has not been as equally popular as in Japan, and has been criticized for the name changes.

The manga is a huge success and it is continued to be published. It won the prestigious Shogakukan Manga Award for the shōnen category in 2000. Some of its volumes appear on the lists of best-selling manga.

The series is successful in Asia and Europe, where some countries translated most of the episodes and volumes. Due to the high popularity DC is re-broadcasting in many countries after the original premieres.

Although popular in many other countries, Case Closed was not as successful in the US, most likely due to poor advertising, name changes, and script changes. Due to this, the "Case Closed" version was cancelled at only 130 episodes. However, the manga is still released by VIZ media, and Funimation is continuing to dub movies.

Megure is a capable veteran officer who cares much for his underlings, but he is prone to occasional shouting fits whenever something does not go right or when his temper gets the better of him. He also has little patience for fools, but tends to be a bit too conservative, limiting his ability for flexible thinking.

After [[Shinichi Kudo|Shinichi]] solved their first mutual case for him, he has regularly consulted him in difficult cases and considered him a great help.<ref>Manga Chapter 207: Hidden Within The Depth Of The Heart</ref> In stark contrast to this, he tends not to think much of [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] and the [[Detective Boys]], usually thinking of them as a nuisance until they solve the ongoing case for him. Likewise, from their common police days, he has no high regard for [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]], and he thinks that he may actually be under some kind of jinx, since wherever Kogoro shows up, there is always some murder case nearby (a fact which actually conforms to Conan, which in later cases he seems to have realized).

Juzo jumped in front of the car to save her. While she was hit, he only hit his head. This is explained why he never takes off his hat, which is to hide the scar. She survived and later they were married.

Chiba is a detective in the Tokyo district, and very often works alongside [[Juzo Megure|Inspector Megure]] and [[Wataru Takagi]]. His main duty appears to be to obtain information outside of the crime scenes. Sometimes, he will even go out and substitute as inspector when Megure is busy on another case.

Initially, he was introduced as a minor role in the 4th Detective Conan Movie, as well as with a minor cameo in [[The Final Screening Murder Case]]. He later takes more of a noticeable role throughout the series.

Chiba attended [[Setting#Teitan_Elementary_School|Teitan Elementary School]], in the 20th graduating class, 2 classes below [[Sumiko Kobayashi]]. Since childhood, he has a tendency to sweat.<ref name=Naeko>Manga Chapters 741~742: The VHS of Memory Case</ref>

== Personality ==
Chiba can be serious, but he is shown to be a mostly light hearted officer. He has been a huge fan of ''tokusatsu'' shows like ''[[Kamen Yaiba]]'' for a long time, and was a member of the broadcasting committee at his elementary school. For a project, he and the other club members made a tokusatsu film called ''Kamen Baiya''.<ref name=Naeko></ref> He also loves to eat and is sometimes shown stuffing his face, usually with burgers and sodas, but usually this is merely done for comic effect. Nonetheless, Chiba can be very supportive, and is a big help, especially for using his size to catch criminals. He, as well as [[Yumi Miyamoto]], is very supportive for [[Wataru Takagi|Takagi]]'s relationship and feelings for [[Miwako Sato|Sato]], and is one of the few officers in the Tokyo district to not get involved in [[Ninzaburo Shiratori|Shiratori]]'s schemes to get the couple to break up.

A very notable trait of Chiba praised by his colleagues in Law Enforcement is that he would always follow and uphold the law no matter what the circumstances are, especially when it is he who breaks it. This is one of the main reasons why Naeko liked him in the first place; it was because he scolded her over a traffic violation, saying that doing the wrong thing will develop into a habit that's hard to get rid of. This event also inspired Naeko to join the Police Force as a traffic cop.

Chiba has a habit of checking VHS tapes to see if they were rewound. He believes he picked this habit up from his older brother.<ref name=Naeko></ref>

[[Wataru Takagi|Takagi]] and Chiba are fellow officers in the 1st investigative division (Homicides) of the Metropolian Police, and very good friends and partners. In fact, Chiba was the only male officer in the department who did not harbor an obsessive crush on [[Miwako Sato|Sato]] and would even assist Takagi in his endeavors to win her heart.<ref>[[Volume 33#Sato's Omiai Case|File 330: ''Sato's Feelings'']]</ref>

==== Naeko Miike ====
Chiba and [[Naeko Miike|Naeko]] were childhood friends and attended Teitan Elementary together were they both joined the school broadcasting committee (although Naeko only joined because Chiba did). When Naeko was to move away, Chiba wrote down his feelings in a love letter. Naeko wrote her response on the side of a VHS in the committee storage room, hoping Chiba's sweating habit would cause the message "I like you, too" to show up on his hands after grabbing the tape. Unfortunately, Chiba couldn't find the right tape and never got the message.

On the day of his elementary school reunion, Chiba returned to the school and searched for the tape again. With the help of Conan and the [[Detective Boys]], he finally finds the message and heads for the reunion. Unfortunately Naeko doesn't show, and he hears from a former classmate that she said she is "now with the one she loved". Depressed, Chiba immediately leaves and finds a lady traffic cop giving him a ticket. When the officer offers to forget about the ticket since he is a fellow officer, Chiba scolds her for offering to ignore his illegal parking. Chiba leaves with the ticket, but then wonders how the girl knew he was a detective. The officer turns out to be Naeko, who has just been transferred to the police headquarters in Tokyo (working under Yumi) and looks forward to working with the one she loves.<ref name=Naeko></ref>
