===Situation===
After realizing that Conan's parents have not contacted them (Kogoro and Ran Mouri) for a long stretch of time, Ran asks when his parents will be returning from overseas. Suddenly, a woman by the name of Fumiyo Edogawa enters the Mouri Detective Agency and admits to the group that she is Conan's mother and wishes to take Conan home. Soon after, Conan revels on the idea and absolute truth that this person is indeed not his mother, as Conan does not really exist, and begins to grow anxious. Worrying that she might harm his new found "family", he goes along with Fumiyo, planning to get away and figure out the mess he's gotten himself into.
<spoiler>
The woman is really Shinichi's mother, '''Yukiko Kudo'''. The man is '''Yusaku Kudo''' and had disguised as one of his own novel characters, the Night Baron. The tall man was '''Professor Agasa''' who had worn a special suit to make him look taller. Yusaku created this scenario to test Shinichi's detective skills. Shinichi's parents are worried about him and want Shinichi to realize the danger of hunting the Black Organization. They also want Shinichi to go with them to America and have Interpol or another professional law enforcement try to find the Black Organization instead. Shinichi refuses because he wants to stay near Ran and look for the Black Organization too. Then Yukiko (in disguise as Fumiyo) gave 10 million yen to Kogoro to offset Conan's freeloading.
* In the Funimation Dub, Fumiyo Edogawa's first name is Fanny.
=== Resolution ===
<spoiler>
The killer was... none of the Hottas. The killer was '''Masahiro Yamauchi'''. The man who was Fumiko's lover was his son, '''Kentarou Yamauchi'''. He was a deceased piano player. When he and Fumiko got in a relationship and Hotta Sr. objected, they tried to convince him otherwise, but in reply Hotta broke the younger Yamauchi's hand which left him unable to play anymore. The younger Yamauchi fell into despair and killed himself by driving into a nearby cliff. His father then became the family butler only to get revenge, preparing the bomb that killed Hotta Sr.

The bomb used was the wine container that Ryoji was intending to give to her father. Yamauchi added an unstable components of garden fertilizer, which contained sulfur, and friction matches and a striking pad, so that when the wine container lid was slid open, the matches would rub again the pad and ignite, causing the mixture to explode and to kill Kosaku Hotta. Being a gardener/butler means that Yamauchi is the only individual who could prepare the bomb.

Yamauchi had also planned to kill Fumiko by tampering with her car, mistakenly thinking that she had rejected his son after the incident. In reality, Fumiko was very traumatized as well: she showed it by dressing in black like a widow and wearing a pendant with a photo of her lost love. Fortunately, Yamauchi's trap failed because Conan alerted Fumiko and she returned to the mansion, making Yamauchi break down in tears for misjudging her.
=== Resolution ===
<spoiler>
The killer is '''Kazushi Nakamichi'''. He and Yumi had been dating for years yet Yumi refused his marriage proposals; however, as soon as he got engaged to the daughter of his boss, Yumi got so jealous that she started blackmailing Nakamichi with private photos that she threatened to send to his fiancé.

The school reunion was supposed to be the last time they'd see each other; Nakamichi took the photos from Yumi's purse, then shot her in the head (with the gun that had been missing in the bank robbing case, which he stole) so she wouldn't ruin his married life, and tricked everyone (except for Conan, and later Kogoro) into thinking that Yumi had commited suicide, taking also advantage of how Yumi had mentioned that she ''did'' want to kill herself due to depression and her really bad economic situation. Unfortunately, what Nakamichi didn't count on was accelerated rigor mortis, caused by exercising before dying; he played ping-pong with Yumi before killing her, but had to leave the room to make up an alibi when Conan and Ran were drawing close. Because Yumi held a ping-pong racket with her index finger pointing out, it was impossible to move it around the trigger of the gun once rigor mortis settles in.

== Manga to anime changes ==
{{main|List of differences between the manga and anime}}
* The manga starts off at the reunion during the moment where Conan and Ran are bathing. The anime starts before the reunion is held with Conan and Ran trying to convince Kogoro to take them. During which a robbery takes place with Kogoro and Conan pursuing the robber. Kogoro is saved when Conan kicks the gun away from the robber. Afterwards, Kogoro, Conan, and Ran meet with Yumi who hopes to see all of them at the reunion. Meanwhile the culprit sneaks onto the scene to steal the gun used by the robber (though the culprit's not revealed until Part 2).
===Situation===

===Resolution===
<spoiler>
</spoiler>

== Dub changes ==
* In the [[Funimation]] Dub, Masao (the boy who Conan convinces he is an alien) is named Jack.
* In the Funimation Dub, Kogoro and Ran are aware of Fumiyo's arrival and planned to surprise Conan, whereas in the Japanese Version they are unaware of her arrival.
* In the Funimation Dub, Fumiyo Edogawa's first name is Fanny.
===Situation===
