The killer is Mari Terahara, the manager.

In the anime, Mari killed Kimura because he turned psychologically abusive to her after she had a nose job. It turns out that not only he liked her better when she was just a sweet girl next door, but that he was psychologically broken after finding out that Mari had specifically gotten plastic surgery to please him, which he could never forgive her and himself for.

Kimura decided to punish both of them by abusing her, while he secretly wrote a love song for Mari which would have been his first single; however, his taunting went so far that Mari was completely embittered, and then decided to have revenge by killing him.

== Manga to anime changes ==
* This episode takes place right after [[Mountain Villa Bandaged Man Murder Case]], with Ran bringing up Sonoko's deduction of the case. Conan is worried as his cover might be blown, only for Sonoko to accept the credit for solving the murder. The scene as a whole doesn't appear in the anime.
* The manga reveals that Tatsuya was rude to his band, because he didn't want them to miss him after he left.
* The anime ends with Ran receiving her present, whereas the manga ends with her trying to find Shinichi (while Conan is shown, nervously hiding).

Officer Takagi comes back to the police department after an all night stakeout and gets reprimanded by Officer Sato for his poorly appearance. The other male policemen gets jealous and finds out Shiratori has found another woman who looks exactly like Satou (Kobayashi-sensei). When Detective Boys and Kobayashi-sensei go to see the fireworks, Kobayashi-sensei gets left behind and overhears a quarrel and sees the figure of the culprit run away in the shadows and sees the stabbed victim.

Conan hurries to the location where he heard sensei scream. Then they are questioned as witnesses by the police. After going to the restoom, Kobayashi overhears the male policemen saying Shiratori was part of the "Satou Miwako Ultimate Defense Line" head and that Kobayashi is a replacement for Satou.

Shiratori has Kobayashi listen to the three culprit's voices and has determined none of them was the voice that shouted out and storms out of the police station. Haibara explains Kobayashi must have seen Sato and heard the rumors that Shiratori is only settling for Kobayashi in place of Sato. Shiratori attempts to rectify the misunderstanding and confronts Kobayashi revealing they met many years ago in a bookstore when confronting a pair of thieves. Kobayashi is unable to remember the event and replies it must have been Sato. Later that night at the school, Kobayashi receives a phone call asking to meet her at the music room when a presence behind her shocks her.

<spoiler>Kobayashi enters the music room where the culprit proceeds to attack her. However, Kobayashi manages to incapacitate the culprit with a suplex and she is revealed to be Sato in disguise. The Detective Boys and Shiratori appears revealing Sato replaced Kobayashi in the hallway and naming the culprit to be Ryuusuke Kodama. The Detective Boys reveal that Kobayashi's testimony was correct, and that she mistaken Kodama to be a woman in the alley due to his long hair and the position of his arm making him seem as if he had breasts. Conan explains the woman's voice that was heard belonged to the victim, and that 09 was actually OS and stood for the first two letters of Osaka Nico Nico transportation. Shiratori reveals that they questioned the truck driver who saw the victim and Kodama entering the alley. Kodama confesses and explains that Sumida planned to kill Kodama to receive money from his life insurance to settle his debt and murdered her in self defense.</spoiler>

== Background ==
At the beginning of the series, Shinichi is a fairly famous high school detective who frequently helps the Tokyo police solve murder mysteries.

One day, Shinichi brings his friend [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] to a local theme park called [[Tropical Land]], to celebrate her victory in the Metropolitan Karate Championships. He later ends up solving a murder case there.<ref name="e1">[[Roller Coaster Murder Case|Episode 1: Roller Coaster Murder Case]].</ref> As they are leaving, Shinichi heads off alone to follow a suspicious man in black, [[Vodka]], who was a suspect in the earlier murder. Shinichi witnesses a blackmail exchange between Vodka and a company president in a secluded area just outside the park, but is too engrossed to notice [[Gin]], Vodka's partner, sneak up from behind. Gin knocks him out and forces him to swallow a new experimental poison known as [[APTX 4869]], and they then leave him to die. He is already well-known as a brilliant young detective, the "Savior of the police force", for solving many difficult cases that the professionals could not.<ref name="e1" /> Shinichi was born to [[Yusaku Kudo]], a mystery writer, and [[Yukiko Kudo]], a former movie star.<ref>[[Volume 5#File 049 - An Unfamiliar Visitor|Volume 5, File 49, page 163: "An Unfamiliar Visitor"]]</ref> He is extremely intelligent, and even from a young age, was very intuitive and observant. Yet despite his popularity with the masses and his schoolmates, he has very few close friends — Ran, Agasa, Heiji, Ai, and to some extent the other Detective Boys (and if you're really reaching, Kaitou Kid).

== Appearance and Skills ==
Shinichi has a striking resemblance to his father, Yusaku Kudo, sporting the same black hair, slightly paled skin, facial structures, and blue eyes. The only traits he doesn't share with his father is the mustache and round glasses. Besides his high school uniform, he also wears fine suits, with a tie, or regular clothing, which vary to his choice.

Shinichi skills as a detective are near the level of the greatest detective in history, Sherlock Holmes, which he's often nicknamed as the, "Modern Sherlock Holmes". He has a keen eye for details, and can spot any "strange points", in a case, that most people tend to ignore or not take into account. This comes from his photographic memory, of being able to remember every abstract of an investigation. Shinichi can also solve a complicated case, just by the littlest hints outside the crime scene,basically, he has the ability to "think out of the box". Shinichi also has knowledge over subjects that help him solve cases, that many people don't know of, this trait was probably because of his insistent reading as a child.

Besides intelligence, Shinichi also has amazing athletic ability, mostly from soccer, his favorite sport.In order to defend himself from criminals that would try and hurt him or those around him. Shinichi is very skilled at football, with only one kick, he's able to accurately shoot any small item, with enough force and power, to the intended target, often, leaving them unconscious in the process.

Though Shinich is 'Tone-Deaf', and can't sing, he has the ability of 'Perfect Pitch'. Also, to be like his favorite detective, Sherlock Holmes, he plays the violin. This was confirmed in movie 12 of the 'Full Score of Fear' when he played "Amazing Grace" for Ran. However, he is stumped on what Ran meant when she said, "He has a funny habit when he plays."

== Plot Overview ==
Because the main plot revolves around the fact that Shinichi has become 'Conan' and is forced into hiding, Shinichi himself appears rarely in the series. However, Conan is frequently shown calling Ran using his voice-changing bow tie to sound like Shinichi. In these instances, it can be said that the character of Shinichi, albeit in the body of Conan, is appearing, since these phone conversations allow Shinichi to be himself, however briefly.

=== Transformations back into Shinichi ===

His next appearance was in [[Volume 10]], when a strange detective from Osaka named [[Heiji Hattori]] arrived at Mouri Detective Agency looking for Shinichi in order to determine which of them was the better detective. A strange combination of having a cold and drinking [[baijiu]] that Heiji had brought along allowed Conan to briefly grow into Shinichi once again.<ref>[[Volume 10#File 092 - The Great Detective Of The West|Volume 10, Files 92-96: "The Great Detective Of The West"]]</ref>

In [[Volume 26]], Conan was able to become Shinichi using a prototype that [[Ai Haibara]] synthesized. As himself, he tried to surprise Ran by disguising himself as a character in her play, but was interrupted by a murder case and ended up revealing himself to his entire high school. [[Heiji Hattori]] covered for him and Shinichi was able to spend about 48 hours as himself, albeit with a brief collapse about halfway through, and turned back into Conan just as he seemed to be about to confess his feelings to Ran.<ref>[[Volume 26#File 254 - An Infatuated Heart|Volume 26, Files 254-260: "An Infatuated Heart"]]</ref>

Shinichi's next appearance was not until [[Volume 62]], when, while on a case with Heiji, Conan went missing and 'Shinichi' seemed to appear. However, the 'Shinichi' is actually someone who had gotten plastic surgery to look like Kudou Shinichi, and was actually trying to blame Kudo for a murder. Then the real Shinichi, who had been hiding in the forest until he could clear his name, appeared. It was revealed he had been temporarily restored by another of Ai's prototypes.<ref>[[Volume 62#File 646 - Village of Animosity|Volume 62, Files 646-651: "Village of Animosity"]]</ref> After the case, however, Shinichi transform back to Conan, but luckily, Haibara secretly followed him there and give him another antidote, saving him from revealing his identity to Kogoro, Ran and Kazuha. While driving home from the case, the group was stopped by another murder which Shinichi and Heiji investigated together, despite increasing pangs that warned of his iminent reversion to Conan. After the case resolved, Ran tried to stop Shinichi from leaving, saying she had something to tell him. Shinichi stopped her, saying "According to my deductions, what you have to say and what I have to say are the same thing." Ran seized his hand while he was transforming back into Conan, and though Haibara knocked her out with Conan's wristwatch, she refused to let go of his hand. Ai and [[Hiroshi Agasa | Professor Agasa]] had to cut and re-pin Conan's shirt onto him because Ran was still clutching his hand.<ref>[[Volume 62#File 652 - The Thing She Really Wants to Ask|Volumes 62-63, Files 652-654: "The Thing She Really Wants to Ask"]]</ref>

Most recently, in [[Volume 71]], the Mouri's were invited to England by a grateful client. However, since 'Conan Edogawa' doesn't have the proper credentials to fly internationally, Ai gave him a prototype pill that Shinichi and Agasa could fly low-profile to England on the same plane that Ran and Kogoro were flying. Ai gave him a second prototype pill for the return journey, but Conan used it while Ran was pursuing him. They came as close as they ever have to openly confessing their feelings for each other, Shinichi told Ran he loved her, but Shinichi soon fled to become Conan again. For the return trip to Japan, it was revealed that Ai had expected him to use his second pill, and had brought extras which allowed him to return to Japan. <ref name="f743" />

Shinichi has appeared in several flashbacks, most notably the flashback of his trip to New York City with [[Ran Mouri | Ran]] when they were sixteen in [[Volume 35]]. There, they met [[Vermouth]] and [[Shuichi Akai]] for the first time.

In Movie 7, Heiji was injured and Kazuha kidnapped; her abductors threatened to kill her unless Heiji showed up for her. Believing Heiji to be unable to do so, Conan contacted Ai and asked if there was any way for him to briefly become Heiji. Ai gave him medicine to simulate the effects of a cold, then the same Chinese liquor that had changed him in his and Heiji's first manga appearance. Conan became Shinichi for approximately an hour, but according to Ai he was extremely weak and sick for the entire time.

In OVA 9, Conan takes another prototype antidote. However, it proves less effective than the prototype she used during the Desperate Revival arc; Conan became Shinichi, but only for a few hours, and remained in a feverish state, unable to wake up until he had reverted back to Conan. During his time unconscious, he had a vivid hallucination that he had grown to age 17 again as Conan and that Ran, aged 27, was about to marry [[Tomoaki Araide]].

Shinichi's initial disappearance troubled Ran to the point of insomnia and nearly going to the police. Since then, Shinichi sometimes calls Ran over the telephone and imitates his normal voice with the voice-changing bowtie so that she doesn't worry about him. [[Yusaku Kudo|Yusaku]] and [[Yukiko Kudo|Yukiko]] Kudo are both aware that [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] is in fact Shinichi. His parents are even more famous than he is, with Yusaku being a famous mystery novelist and Yukiko being a retired actress. They currently live in the United States and travel extensively, having left Shinichi in Japan on his own when he was fourteen. Though he sometimes finds his parents' carefree ways to be annoying, he loves them dearly. Yusaku is also a detective with the same keen eye for details, and similarly to Holmes' brother Mycroft, Yusaku always seems to solve a case one step ahead of his son.

==== Professor Agasa ====
Although not related by blood, there's a strong family-like bond between Shinichi and [[Hiroshi Agasa]]. Dr Agasa was the first to know about Shinichi's real identity and was the one to tell him to keep it a secret. Most of the gadgets that Shinichi has where made by Dr Agasa to help him catch the criminals and solve the cases. Dr Agasa also knows about Shinichi's romantic relationship with Ran and sometimes teases him about it in front of her (when he can't do anything about it since he is Conan).

[[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] is often referred to as Shinichi's detective rival from the West. Even though Heiji discovers Shinichi's secret, he decides to keep quiet (though sometimes he slips up and calls him Kudo in front of others). After Heiji realizes the truth they become close friends with a common interest in solving mysteries. They have solved many cases together, and Heiji is the person Shinichi turns to for advice or for confirmation regarding a deduction.

Despite the fact [[Toichi Kuroba|Toichi]] and Shinichi only met once prior to Toichi's death, it's worth mentioning Toichi referred to Shinichi as his "older brother" and himself as the "younger brother". This is because of Yusaku, Shinichi's father, being the '''father''' of the name of Kaitou '''Kid''', Toichi's secret identity. Toichi's son and successor, [[Kaito Kuroba|Kaito]], has also only crossed paths with Shinichi as Shinichi once, during the [[The_Gathering_of_the_Detectives!_Kudo_Shinichi_vs._Kaitou_Kid|Clocktower heist]]. Kaito thought Shinichi made the heist harder (and thus less boring) in [[Saguru Hakuba]]'s absence, and Shinichi found Kid's intention of 'stealing' the Clocktower in order to save it from demolition to be fairly admirable.

In their next encounter, however, after Shinichi had become Conan, Kid disguised himself as Ran in order to steal the Suzuki Black Star pearl. When Conan cornered him on the Suzuki cruise ship, Kid suggested that he'd stolen all of Ran's clothes to impersonate her, and left her naked on the deck. While this ended up being a bluff, Conan was shocked and infuriated. In subsequent encounters between Kid and Conan, Conan displays a much more intense desire to capture Kid. In several instances he appears to be able to 'sense' Kid's presence; knowing Kid is close by often causes Conan to behave far more frenetically. However, in several instances, beginning with the "Big Adventure in the Eccentric Residence" case, when Kid does Conan/Shinichi a favor, such as saving Genta's life in the aforementioned case, Conan reciprocates by halting his investigation just shy of capturing Kid, thereby allowing him to escape unhindered.

There are only a few characters in the series who know Conan's real identity and none have betrayed Conan's identity to date. The main characters to know the secret are [[Hiroshi Agasa]], Conan's parents, [[Heiji Hattori]] and [[Ai Haibara]]. [[Vermouth]] also knows, but for unknown reasons she has kept it a secret from the rest of the Organization. [[Eisuke Hondou]], the younger brother of C.I.A. agent [[Hidemi Hondou]], also knows and keeps Conan's secret. [[Kaitou Kid]] also knows Conan's identity in the movies, though it is not clear whether he knows Conan's secret in the actual anime and manga. However, Kid seems to know there is something unusual about Conan, as whenever he tries to publicly steal he usually reveals that he only wants to compete with Conan as thief and detective. == Plot ==

===Part 1===
Sonoko, Ran, and Conan go to Teitan High School to investigate mysterious events supposedly caused by the grudge of a dead student named Hideaki Hosaka. Ran and Sonoko greet some friends and introduce Conan to them; the friends tease Conan and Ran by saying Shinichi are Conan rather alike. Conan then runs into the real Dr. Araide, who has returned. He informs Conan of that he had been hiding overseas with his family, and told him that Jodie told him to tell Conan everything. Ran asks Dr. Araide to help investigate the ghost story with them.

Sonoko explains there ar three stories showing that the student's ghost is terrorizing the school in the early morning hours. The first is that a girl heard the sound of someone sobbing in the sports warehouse where the dead student's desk is stored. After bringing a professor to investigate, the crying had stopped and, no one was found inside. Third year student and Ran's Karate senpai, Kazumi Tsukamoto, interrupts after overhearing the story, saying Hideaki Hosaka fell down a set of stairs and that wind blowing through a small window may account for the sounds heard. Kazumi Tsukamoto notices that it has started raining outside and suggests Ran and company go the library and that she will help with the investigation. On the way, they cross Seko Kunishige who goes to the nurse's office.

In the library, Sonoko relates the second story. Four mornings in a row, books that had been borrowed by Hosaka were found scattered around in the library. Finally, Sonoko and gang go to the stairs that Hosaka died after falling from for the last tale. An unexplained puddle of water formed at the bottom of the stairs, and supposedly the number of steps on the stairs changes. The last part was disproved when Conan notices Sonoko messed up her count. While they were arguing, art student Monobe Masao berates them for being loud.

Ran looks out the window and sees a desk outside that hadn't been there earlier. Conan and Araide run out to investigate. The desk was the one from the sports warehouse, and a weighed down note atop it reads: "My resentment isn't gone yet". Furthermore, Conan notices that although it had been raining, there are no footprints in the mud around the desk, and the desk and the note are dry.

== Resolution ==
<spoiler>Conan, using Sonoko, solves the case and reveals the culprit was Seko Kunishige, a close friend to the dead student Hideaki Hosaka. Kunishige reveals that he found his friend's desk in the storage room with a name on it, thinking he was bullied and then murdered. Monobe Masao reveals the true story of events, Hosaka died saving him from falling backwards down the stairs while holding a heavy sculpture. The sculpture crushed Hosaka. Kazumi Tsukamoto explains that Hosaka's desk was put in the storage room so that it could be brought out for graduation in memory of Hosaka and was not to hide evidence. Dr. Araide, who was the first doctor on the scene, concocts a white lie about Hosaka's last words to say held no grudges when he died in order to soothe the third years.

After the case, Dr. Araide receives a call from Jodie who is checking on his reintegration into Teitan High. Dr. Araide says it went smoothly but asks Jodie if Vermouth was really an evil person because all the students and teachers had nothing but praise for the disguised Vermouth's kindness and compassion. Jodie angrily hangs up on Araide after yelling, "How in the world can someone be kind if she kills people with a smile!?"

Conan helps Kogoro solve his case without even having to knock him out, but after wards Ran escorts him to Shinichi's house for a confession of him being Shinichi. But Ran shows strong intuition about his personality and it makes Conan look wary for a no way out situation. When Shinichi's mom appears on the scene Conan/Shinichi worried for more thinking that Yukiko his mom might slip information about him, though she make more complex background for Conan to help Shinichi escape but Ran didn't give up so fast but ended in leaving Conan in his mom's care for days without knowing the truth. Upon entering the gate Yukiko started to treat Shinichi as a real baby and even carry him way into their house, but why has she left America for Japan?

The killer was Mako Miyoshi, whose real name was Mako Kinoshita. She was the younger sister of Yashirou Kinoshita, a promising stage magician who died on-stage 14 years ago, when he tried an escape trick that went horribly wrong... but said death actually was a murder commited by his mentor Tsukumo, who was jealous and fearful due to the man's raw talent.

Mako, who back then was around Ayano's age, was behind the scenes and saw Tsukumo mess up with the supplies, but she was too young to properly testify; she became Tsukumo's apprentice as well and, once the training was complete and Tsukumo was discussing which of his apprentices was the most qualified to be his succesor, she revealed her identity and forced him to go along with her plans by threatening to kill Ayano. (Which she didn't do, though Mako admits she wanted to more than once).

The killer is Yoshifusa, who actually is only impersonating the real Yoshifusa Yabuuchi, who died in Brazil years ago and was a good friend of his. The fake Yoshifusa is named Dickson Tanaka, a man born in Brazil to Japanese parents and ''Carlos's''' bodyguard, since young Carlos is the real Yoshifusa's son with a Brazilian woman as well as one of the heirs. Dickson Tanaka made everyone believe Carlos was his bodyguard to protect him from the others (since they thought he was a bodyguard, they wouldn't attempt anything against Carlos), and he killed Machiko in self-defense when she attempted to stab him in the bath.
