Situation
Part 1
It's summer vacation and the Detective Boys (along with Agasa) are gathered on the school ground for morning radio exercises. Professor Agasa had told the Detective Boys about these exercise once when they went to see the fireworks. When Mitsuhiko doesn't show up for the exercise, Conan, Genta, Ayumi, Haibara and Agasa decide to visit Mitsuhiko, believing that he was ill. Mitsuhiko's older sister, Asami Tsuburaya, tells them that he left saying that there was a "camping trip" with the Detective Boys, so Mitsuhiko prepaired his schoolbag to go with them and took some candies wrapped in bamboo leaves. Concerned, the kids and Agasa set off a journey into the forest in search of their best friend.

}}

Asami told the Detective Boys that Mitsuhiko had borrowed from her a sunscreen that she had bought, which came from abroad. She also mentioned that her brother often saw a girl which worked at a flower shop, and probably was in love with her. The girl said she hadn't seen Mitsuhiko that morning, but then she realized she had seen him indeed about to take a bus. She called his name, but he didn't reply. The guys also heard from her that Mitsuhiko had been wearing his cap, smelled like lemons, and that she had seen him being warned by two men after mentioning the name of some samurais. She started wondering which they were, and she mentioned Uesugi, Takeda, Toyotomi and Takegawa.

With no more clues, the Detective Boys asked the bus driver about Mitsuhiko. He told them that he was in his bus and that he remembered him because he wasn't looking through the window but ahead, as if he was worried. He had got off the bus at a train station, so his friends went to look for him there. One of the employees there remembered him because he had bought an adult ticket by mistake and asked him to change it in a hurry. The ticket was 1,900 yen so it could be a ticket to Chiba or Gunma. A worker at a train station in Gunma said he had seen Mitsuhiko hiding there for a while and then leaving. The Professor and the Detective Boys start looking for Mistuhiko in the Gunma Prefecture with Conan's tracking glasses... Where could he be?

Part 2
In the forest, the Detective Boys and Agasa run into Officer Yamamura. He tells them that they have let loose a very dangerous criminal killer known as Ki'ichiro Numabuchi by accident, and that they were in search for him. Having met with this serial killer once before in Osaka, Conan knew how dangerous Numabuchi was already. He was there with the Gunma police because he testified that his fourth victim was buried there, as his mother was born in Gunma, but they haven't been able to find this corpse yet. Mistuhiko is in fact in the forest, but for some reason he can't pick the Detective Badge to talk to Conan. Everyone is afraid this serial killer could be targetting Mitsuhiko. After a long while of searching him, Conan starts deducing the truth.

The scent of lemon was nothing but just the sunscreen Mitsuhiko borrowed from Asami. It smelled like that because it also was an insect repelent. Suddenly, Ayumi spots Numabuchi up in a tree, but he flees. Haibara starts wondering why she can't feel people from the Black Organization anymore...
Resolution
<spoiler>
Haibara seems to know a lot about Ki'ichiro Numabuchi, and she reveals to Conan that it is because Numabuchi was part of the Black Organization. He had been probably hired to be a hitman, but as he wasn't clever enough, they tried to send him to Sherry as a guinea pig for her prototypes. However, Numabuchi escaped the Organization before she could meet Shiho.

Regarding Mitsuhiko, Conan tells his friends that he can't reply because he got lost and started shouting to ask for help and almost lost his voice. Moreover, he can't pick the badge because he can't use his hands.

Numabuchi found Mitsuhiko in the forest and says that he reminds him of himself, worried and lost. Mitsuhiko is afraid because he can hear Conan telling him that there's a serial killer in the forest, but he can't escape from Numabuchi, who suddenly appears in front of everyone and gives himself in. He's carrying Mitsuhiko, who hasn't been hurt or harmed by the serial killer. The police officers take him away and Genta takes a look at Mitsuhiko's hands, from where a firefly comes out.

Conan explains everything to his friends. Mitsuhiko had gone to the forest to catch fireflies, due to the fact that in summer a lot of fireflies appear near that river in Gunma forest, as fireflies live in clean waters. They can't be seen from the city, so Mitsuhiko went to Gunma. The name of the samurais Mitsuhiko had mentioned were because he meant to say the names of two firefly species who were named after two samurais who were rivals, Genji and Heike. The two men were from an organization that defends the environment. They knew where Mitsuhiko wanted to go, so they warned him because he didn't want a lot of kids to go to Gunma forest and pollute it. He was looking ahead in the bus because he was following those two men who were in that bus, so he had to know when to get off of the bus as they were also going to Gunma. This was the reason why he bought an adult ticket, as he pressed the same button in the machine as those men. He was hurried to change the ticket because he didn't want to miss the train as he had to keep following the two men. When he got to Gunma, he hid for a while so that the men didn't see him, or they would lecture him again. The bamboo leaves were going to be used by Mitsuhiko to attract the fireflies.

He had done all that because after seeing the fireworks, Ayumi and Ai mentioned they also wanted to see the fireflies, so everything was a surprise for the two of them. Conan then tells everyone that Numabuchi was sentenced to death penalty for his serial murders and that there was no fourth victim. He just wanted to see the fireflies in the forest for the last time in his life.
<spoiler>
After a thorough investigation, Conan drops hints allowing Sato, Takagi and Kogoro to solve the murder. Kogoro reveals that the murderer used an unknown object to loop around Moroguchi's hand from the window. After the murderer gave Moroguchi poisoned coffee, he left the room, locked the door, and used the unknown object to send it key back to Moroguchi's hand. The only object fitting this description was the interviewer's Kakuji Dejima cassette tape strings. They reveal that the forensic team should find Moroguchi's blood on the cassette tape. Dejima confesses and reveals that he murdered Moroguchi in vengeance for his friend, Akiba. Akiba was Moroguchi's assistant and was forced to be a test subject for murder ideas which eventually resulted in Akiba's death. Since the police were unable to determine how Akiba was killed, they ruled it as a suicide and Moroguchi was left unpunished. Later that day, Ran asks Sato about the ring on her ring finger. Sato replies that Yumi told her the ring was a charm that would keep bugs away and accepts Takagi's proposal to use his ring as a replacement to the charm.
Elena Miyano was a biochemist in the Black Organization. She was married to Atsushi Miyano and had two children, Shiho Miyano and Akemi Miyano. Together she and Atsushi started the APTX 4869 research according to Vermouth. Both Elena and Atsushi died during a research facility fire that Pisco called an accident. Later the project was taken over by her daughter Shiho.

Background
Elena's known family is made up of herself, her husband Atsushi Miyano, and her two daughters, Akemi Miyano and Shiho Miyano.

Atsushi Miyano moved out of his father's house thirty years ago to go "somewhere" for his research, most likely the Black Organization. He got married in this time period to Elena, a foreigner of British origin. Vermouth may have hinted that there was an earlier project that the Miyanos assumed control over when they joined, perhaps the one Shiho implied was at least 50 years old. While they were researchers for the Organization, they worked on a project that they called Silver Bullet, which their lab mates refered to as a "dream drug". This could be similar to, or the same one that Shiho calls APTX 4869. Elena was known as “Hell Angel” in the Organization, which Haibara translates into Japanese as "the angel which fell into hell". Elena may have earned the nickname because of her apparently nice personality which set her apart from the darkness of the rest of the organization.

She and her husband met Hiroshi Agasa at a science conference some time in the past. Agasa remembers that Atsushi was a very polite person who complimented his inventions, but that Elena was a very quiet person who you couldn't tell what she was thinking. 20 years before the current timeline, the couple and a 4~5 year old Akemi visited Atsushi's father's house then occupied by Atsushi's childhood friend and playmate Sohei Degima. Rei Furuya revealed that he had met Elena some time before she died. Additionally, a woman resembling Elena appears in one of Amuro's flashbacks in File 889, where she asked him not to pick fights anymore as she wouldn't be able to tend his wounds the next time he comes, because she will go to somewhere "very far away".

Elena's Mysterious Death
Elena and Atsushi died in a fire at a research facility. It destroyed much of their work, but Shiho was able to resurrect their project from the salvaged remains. Elena's death was claimed to be an accident by Pisco, an executive agent who apparently was close with the couple, but several mysterious points remain. Most notably, Elena and Atsushi<!-- Atsushi suddenly went to visit his best friend--> seemed to know that something was going to happen to them, which Elena alluded to in her conversation with a young Rei Furuya. She also took the time to leave four tapes for Shiho meaning that she knew she was about to do something that she might not survive. The four tapes are numbered 1-20 with the numbers split into groups of five. The numbers correspond to a message left by Elena for Shiho's same-numbered birthday. On the fourth tape (15-20) message number 18 meant for Shiho’s 18th birthday, Elena talks about if Shiho will regret what she is about to do, but we don't get to hear the message. During the Bell Tree Express arc almost 400 chapters later, Haibara reveals the continuation of what Elena had said to her was that she was working on a remarkable drug she called "Silver Bullet", which might be an early nickname for APTX 4869 or a closely related project. She added that it was "terrifying" and the research would require them to leave Shiho and Akemi behind.

Appearance and Personality
The British Elena is the foreign half of Ai’s parents and bears a strong resemblance to her younger daughter. She wears glasses and has long hair. Her eyes have not been shown to date.

Elena seems to have had a generally nice personality, although Agasa feels she came off as being more suspicious than her "mad scientist" husband, Atsushi. Given the tapes she left behind, Elena seems to have loved her daughters. That said, Elena left her daughters at the mercy of the Black Organization even though she knew that she was going to "disappear" in advance.
clear

Skills
Due to her work on drug related projects for the Black Organization she would have to be skilled at biochemistry. She made significant advances on her research project working with her lab mates on creating a "dream drug" that they were calling "Silver Bullet". It is unknown how much progress was made, only that her daughter Shiho Miyano was able to make further advances on a project called "APTX 4869".

Despite her quiet nature and foreign appearance, Elena can speak Japanese fluently. This was called into question by one of the workers living at Atsushi's house. In the anime he later sees Elena talking with Akemi quietly.
Plot overview
Hotel Party Murder Case (Manga: 242; Anime: 178)
Pisco tells Haibara that he is an old acquaintance of her parents and knew that they were working on a drug project. He is surprised on how far she has come with the project. He also mentions that the parents died in an accident.

Moving Dolls Case (Manga: 384; Anime: 312)
When Conan questions Haibara about why she doesn't know much about the Doll sets, the topic shifts to her past. She mentions that the Black Organization told Akemi that her parents had died in a lab accident, but Haibara is skeptical despite Pisco's earlier words. Haibara mentions that she doesn't know much about her mother, but that her father "Atsushi Miyano" was often called a Mad Scientist, and his projects were often boycotted.

The Torn Friendship (Manga: 398; Anime: 329)
On the way to a camping retreat Agasa comments that he does know the scientist, Atsushi Miyano. He says that he was a very friendly man who complimented his inventions. He reveals that his wife was named "Elena Miyano" and that she was quiet and he could never tell what she was thinking. Rumor has it that she met Atsushi when she came from England to study in Japan.

Bathroom Murder Case (Manga: 423-425; Anime: 340-341)
Approximately 30 years ago Atsushi moved out of the house he inherited from his father to go do research. He left the home to a childhood friend of his to open a design company. A short time later he sent a wedding invitation to his friend. At a point 20 years ago Atsushi and his wife, Elena, and his daughter, Akemi, came back to the house with something very important to tell the friend and stayed overnight, however the friend who was living there was busy and away for a few days. The other members of the company remember Elena being very quiet. They thought it was because she didn't speak Japanese very well, but Akemi spoke it perfectly. Atsushi had been looking out the window frequently and a black car with grey windows was parked nearby quite often. The three of them left without leaving any message behind. Akemi returned at a much more recent point of time (approximately one week before dying) to use the bathroom and hid something in the water tank. Twice someone had broken into the house and broken the lock on the bathroom door, possibly to find the item and spy on the occupants. Haibara reveals that her mother's nickname in the organization was "Hell Angel" and she translates it into Japanese as . At the end of the main case, Conan reveals that the items that Akemi hid in the bathroom were cassette tapes sealed in a plastic bag. The four tapes are numbered in 5 intervals ending with 20. Conan says that the first two tapes were empty and began to listen to the 11-15 tape. He stops and hands the headphones to Haibara saying that its something he shouldn't hear. The tape begins with "To the 11-year old Shiho, happy brithday!" The tapes are recorded messages from Elena to a more grown-up Shiho who she would have not been able to meet.

Convenience Store Case (Manga: 427; Anime: 343)
In the middle of this case we have Haibara sitting in Agasa's basement listening to the tapes that were recovered in the previous case. "Shiho, won't you regret what you are about to do? If so, I am totally on your side. I'll never loose faith in you. Do your best. Well, it'll be your 19th birthday next time... bye-bye honey, oh, by the way... maybe you are old enough to hear this... I'm really..." However this is all we get to hear of the tape. (Later in the series we get the continuation of the quote.)

Halloween Party Case (Manga: 434; Anime: 345)
In the confrontation between Jodie and Vermouth at the dock once the main case had finished, Haibara arrived and said that she would willingly give herself over to Vermouth in exchange for sparing everyone else. Vermouth told her "If you want to blame anyone, blame your parents who took over this foolish research."

Mystery Train (Manga: 821, 823-824; Anime: 702, 704)
After receiving a message from Vermouth on her phone while on the train, Haibara freaks out and ditches the main group and hides around the corner as to not be detected. She then has a flashback to the words that her mother left her on the tapes (that were recovered 400 chapters ago). This version was translated slightly different than the original: "Alright, so the next time will be your 19th birthday... bye-bye see you soon... oh yes, maybe its about time I told you... the truth is, your mom is making a truly terrifying drug at the moment... my lab mates are getting really excited about it, they say it's like a "dream drug"... your dad and I are putting our hopes on it and calling it... the silver bullet! But in order to complete the drug, your dad and I will have to leave you and your sister... please understand Shiho..."

At the end of the case Bourbon's identity is revealed and he tells the person he believes to be Shiho that she looks very much like her mother. He reveals that he has met both of the Miyano parents as well as Akemi. However that Shiho happened to be Kaitou Kid in a mask with Haibara feeding him lines.

Tea Poisoning Murder Case (Manga: 889; Anime: 771)
Rei Furuya has a flashback to when he was a kid and his wounds were being treated by Elena. However she tells him that soon she may have to go far away and will be unable to continue to treat his wounds from when he was picking fights.

Department Store Stabbing Case (Manga: 939-941, Anime: Unknown)
When a makeup counter sales associate asks Haibara where her mother was, she commented that her mother had died shortly after she was born.

Kohji Haneda's Death Case (Manga: 948-???, Anime: TBA)
Haibara gives further details about the deaths of the elder Miyanos. They died in a fire at their research facility. Many of their drug data documents were also destroyed but Shiho was able to recreate their drug based on the parts that survived. It is also revealed that their drug was used for killing like Shiho's APTX 4869. Kohji Haneda and Amanda Hughes who were killed in their hotel rooms 17 years ago may have been killed by that drug. However, only Kohji was listed on the APTX 4869's victims' list.

Relationship Analysis
Atsushi Miyano
With in a short time of meeting (a few years) they fell in love and and got married. Dejima, Atsushi's childhood friend reports that he received an invitation to their wedding only a few years after Atsushi had left his home in Dejima's hands.

Akemi Miyano
She had to trust Akemi enough to have left her tapes for Shiho in Akemi's hands. Akemi was also taken with Elena and Atsushi to visit Atsushi's home 20 years ago. However it must be noted that they were distracted enough by the fact that the Black Organization was following them that they let Akemi roam free and hide the resident's belongings.

Shiho Miyano
She cared enough to leave messages on tapes for the grown-up Shiho for all of the birthdays that she would miss witnessing. She even left some information about the drug project that she was working on called the "Silver Bullet" using that as an explanation as to why she had to leave Shiho and Akemi behind.

Vermouth
Vermouth seems to blame the Miyano parents for her own situation. When she was ready to kill Haibara during the showdown at the docks she told her that she should blame her parents for this predicament.

Rei Furuya
While the true relationship between them has not been revealed yet, We know that they knew each other when Rei was younger. Rei got into many fights and it seems that Elena would bandage him up after the fights. However, one day, Elena had to move and could no longer bandage him.

Name origin
"Elena" comes from the German reading of the Irene of Irene Adler.<ref>Gosho Q&A from Super Digest Book 50+<br>Q: 76: Does Miyano Elena's name come from the German reading of Irene?<br>
Well, he is… quite complex. He’ll appear from now on too. Soon, I’ll go collect data at the professional shogi players' championship series. Haneda’s “Hane” comes from Yoshiharu Habu (tn: the kanji 羽 can be read both “Hane” and just “Ha”). In the manga, things like “that person’s” real identity and even more will be revealed one after the other. (tn: again, “ano hito”, not “ano kata”, so I’m not sure he’s talking about the boss, that would be insane…) First, Amuro Tōru’s real name will be revealed. Then, why did he think of Haibara’s mother, Elena, will also be explained. (tn: not sure about this phrase.) Two mothers will also be revealed as being sisters, etc.…… A lot of things are connected together. This is bad, I’m talking too much. Well, please look forward to the manga.
Elena Miyano and Mary are sisters
In 2014 Gosho Aoyama did an interview with the Da Vinci magazine in which he revealed that "Two mothers will be revealed to be sisters". From then on there as been speculation as to who the sisters might be. Many people jumped in with the idea that Mary, who is assumed to be the Akai family mother would be one of them since she is a recently introduced character of the arc that was happening at the time. Additional speculation began to link Elena as the other sister due to her being mentioned in the same question of the same interview.

In the manga Department Store Stabbing Case, Conan noticed some left over make-up on Haibara's face that made it look like she had the Akai family eye bags. Conan immediately began to suspect that Haibara may be related somehow to Mary. Interestingly enough, even at this stage in the series we have not seen Elena Miyano's eyes for comparison. This may be because she has the Akai family eye bags due to being related.
<spoiler>
The killer is Ryuichi Seto. Earlier on, Masuko had freaked out after breaking what looked like an original Kikuemon pottery piece and it was theorized at first she 'killed herself' out of guilt for breaking something worth millions of yens; what actually happened was that she was copying Kikuemon's prized pieces and selling them for huge prices behind her father-in-law's back, broke one of the copies, and was terrified because she believed she'd be found out. True to this belief, Ryouchi noticed the broken piece was a fake and later confronted her on it; he attempted to dissuade Masuko from her illegal gains, but when she harshly rebuffed him, Ryuichi was enraged both due to this and to his own pride and decided to kill her.

When Masuko was drunk and completely passed out, Ryuichi took the sleeping woman to the storage room instead of her bedroom, placing her inside a drawer and a hanging loose rope around her neck. After this he put Masuko's cellphone next to her, since she used it as an alarm clock; hours later, the still drunk and thus completely unaware Masuko woke up with the cellphone alarm, then tried to get out of bed, she ended up hanging herself instead. The blood came from a wound caused by a metal nail sticking out of the drawer; when Masuko "hung 'self", her leg hit the nail and got ripped open.
After explaining the trick used and the evidence, Muneyuki Mino gave himself in. It turned out that during Christmas, while Muneyuki was cleaning the things of his late daughter, he found the broken box of the tie his daughter gave to Motoo, her husband. And when she went to the airport, wanting to give the tie to Motoo, instead of seeing a grieving man, he saw a cheerful man together with Kikuyo. Sonoko gives her pottery to Makoto, who doesn't know what it's supposed to be used for. Ran decides to not send Shinichi her pottery. Conan discovers it a few days later, where it says on the bottom "I will wait for you," with a heart next to it. This makes Conan happy for the rest of the day.
Conan, Haibara, and Agasa travel to Nishigun's apartment and realize that someone has stolen Nishigun's photograph album and deleted the data off his computer.
Conan realizes who the culprit is from the phone calls and reveals the culprit to be his friend Tago, the culprit used a chair to reach the photo album on a high shelf meaning he has a short structure. Since Tago asked Nishigun to keep the door to his veranda to do the laundry in the morning, Conan concludes that he is hiding in the laundry machine on the veranda. Tago apologizes to Nishigun and tells him he had to erase the photograph of a diorama he had plagiarized. Nishigun tells him he knew Tago had plagiarized the tank and had no intention of putting it on his blog. Nishigun then gives Conan the photograph of Eisuke's father and tells him Eisuke's father worked for something called "The Company".
