At the Detective Agency, Conan is on the phone talking to Heiji about a restaurant's opening party. Heiji invites Conan, Ran, and Kogoro to come to the party, saying that three famous athletes from America are also going to be there.

In Osaka at the K3 Restaurant, Kogoro is very excited to meet Mai Kuraki, Miho Komatsu, TWO-MIX, and his favorite idol, Yoko Okino.

The lights get turned off, and the announcer welcomes the three famous American athletes, treating them as special guests. The three athletes are a former heavyweight boxing champion, Ricardo Barreira. Next is the major leaguer who pitches 160 km, Mike Norwood. Lastly, the goalkeeper known as the "Iron Wall of Europe", the pro soccer player named Ray Curtis. When he was Shinichi, he used to be a huge fan of Ray Curtis, and he is very happy to see him in person. The announcer is now going to ask a few questions to the three athletes. First, the announcer asks why they chose Japan to open their restaurant. Ray answers that it's because Japan is like a second home to them. Ray's wife and Mike's wife are both Japanese and Ricardo just love ninjas and samurais. Next, the announcer asks does the "K" in the restaurant's name, "K3", mean "Kings". Ray answers it's wrong. The first is a Knockout, the K from KO in boxing. The next is a "Strikeout", represented by a K in baseball. The last is a "Goalkeeper", keeper starts with K in soccer. Suddenly, the news reporter named Ed McCay who was invited to the K3 Restaurant asks that isn't Japan the home of many scandals, and mentions that K stands for "kitanai" meaning filth.

Heiji wonders who he is and Kogoro knows that Ed McCay's famous in America. He's a reporter that whose speciality is exposing famous athletes' scandals. He manages to prove the athletes took illegal drugs, played fixed games, and had affairs in the past.

Later, the announcer asks the audience to submit any questions to the three athletes. Ran suddenly raises her hand to submit a question, but actually asks Ray Curtis to sign an autograph. The announcer is against it, but Ray says that it's okay and that he'going to sign it on one of his number 8 uniforms. Ran thanks Ray for accepting her request. When Ray asks her name, she actually asks to write 'Shinichi'. Conan blushes because Ran remembered that he was a fan of Ray Curtis.

Kazuha thinks it's weird that goalkeepers are supposed to be number 1 but Ray wears number 8. Conan says it's because Ray used to be a fielder, but during the World Cup, both the first string and back-up goalkeepers were injured, putting them in a pinch. They decided to make Ray the goalkeeper. His super-saves led them to victory. After that, when he entered the Sevilla League in Spain, he came on as a goalkeeper with the number 8. Of course, he wears it for his major league soccer team as well. Kazuha then asks what does number 99 mean the one Mike wears. Heiji answers that it stands for 99 mph, which is 160 km in Japan. It's the speed of Mike's pitch, so he requested that number. Lastly, Kazuha asks what does 4 mean which it says it on the boxing glove under Ricardo's signature. Kogoro answers that it's because Ricardo used to always win in "four" rounds, so he started putting it under his signature.

When Ran gets back with the autographed uniform for Shinichi, she also has the ticket to the exhibition match in Nagai that Ray will be playing in. She gave it to Conan.

Outside, Ran uses the transceiver to communicate the three athletes to go to the hotel rooms above the restaurant to form a letter "K". When it's done, the gunshot occurs and the window breaks. Conan and Heiji go back inside and then upstairs. They find the dead body of Ed McCay.

When Otaki and the police arrive, they identify the victim as Ed McCay, a 48-year old reporter from Chicago. The cause of death is a gunshot wound to the chest. The weapon was a Smith & Wesson revolver. Judging from the blood stains, death wasn't instant. Heiji hears that the gunshot was heard at 8:05 pm. In the hotel making a "K", Ray was responsible for the 1st and 2nd floors, Mike was responsible for the 3rd and 4th floors, and Ricardo was responsible for the 5th floor. That means any of those three could have possibly committed the crime. Judging from the three athletes' past, they all have motives.

When Conan checks the corpse, he notices the victim is gripping his belt with his left hand. Also, the fingers of the right hand. The little finger and ring finger are curled in. It's the dying message from the victim. The keys to figuring this out are the three fingers on the right hand and the white bando in his left, "bando" refering to a leather belt in the west.

When the police checks all the people with gunpowder traces, they found nothing. They also checked the three athletes with light body check but their managers can't let the police treat them as suspects anymore. Of course, there's no gunpowder traces on them either. Those three weren't fond of the victim. He reported that Ricardo fought in fixed matches and was forced to retire. Next, he said that Ray got kicked out of European soccer for illegal drug abuse. Finally, he claimed Mike had an affair that lead to his divorce, but Mike's wife was Japanese and they're doing well. Conan is acting strangely as the three celebrities are suspects. Heiji wonders what's wrong with him.

==== Part 2 ====
Kogoro, Ran, and Kazuha are still at the party. Ran asks Kazuha where are Conan and Heiji and she told Ran that they are still investigating the case. Meanwhile, Heiji is still in the stairs investigating, trying to figure out who murdered Ed McCay. He checks the rooms and kept thinking. Conan suddenly appeared and talks to him about that all three sport celebrities are all innocent. Heiji and Conan found the mop in the hotel room. They figured out what the trick is and Conan couldn't believe it. Conan went out and found three sport celebrites going out of the restroom. Conan went to the restroom and found the needle from the trash. He heard Ran, Kazuha, and Kogoro coming. Kogoro is talking to Ran and Kazuha about what he had overheard it in the restaurant. He heard one of the employees saying that they understand what "bandou" means. Kogoro also said that Ed McCay was fluent in Japanese and knew a lot about Japanese food. Conan finally figured it out who the culprit is.

=== Resolution ===
<spoiler>Ray Curtis asked Otaki if they can go but Otaki refuses. Heiji tells Otaki to let them go because they didn't find anything on them. Heiji asks Ray a favor. He told Ray that someone's waiting for him in the hotel room where he stays. Heiji also told Ray that someone's a huge fan for him to see.

So Ray just went upstairs and found the door on the mop against the wall. He wondered who did it. Conan appeared and confronts '''Ray Curtis''' that he's the culprit. He first explains how Ray managed to switch on the light. He points out that the room that Ray switched on the light was right below the victim's room. He then kicks the soccer ball at the floor which the victim's room was on and the ball then hits the broom that is set up such that the cabinet door is supported by it. After the ball hits the mop, the cabinet door will fall and hit the switch, thus the light will switch on. Ed McCay's dying message tells that his three fingers referred to how Japanese people eat sushi, while his left hand gripping his belt meant to say, "bandou". In sushi restaurants, the staff tries to avoid giving out prices until the end. They use secret signals like "bandou" for item number 8. That's the number that Ray wears. Ray then asks for proof and pointed out that the police found no gunpowder on him and that even if the find that he had ask to wash his previous set of clothes it could be just because he sweats too much. Conan then asks about his shoes. He deduced that Ray had not taken off his shoes while committing the murder. Ray asked Conan to help suppress the gunpowder evidence on his shoes, but instead Conan kicked the soccer into his face and revealed Ray could no longer block even Conan's shot. Conan demanded to know why Ray could not move like a soccer player; and Ray explains the story behind his crime.

The motive was that Ray had been taking heroin and then marijuana to ease joint pain the heroin had caused which severely harmed his athletic ability and reduced his reaction time. Ray reveals that the victim, Ed McCay, created false rumors about him and his drug use. These rumors stressed his wife and she committed suicide. Ray explained that he decided to take revenge on Ed McCay after that. Suddenly, Conan tells Ray to stop. He tells Ray that even if he is facing a bitter aspect of life, drugs and murder are foul without any excuse, deserve a red card, for a loser. Ray smiled and admits that he was a cheater. He said he was a bad player and lost a game. He also said he must be ejected for his late wife and his big fan like Conan. So now, Ray went downstairs and turned himself in to the police.

At Heiji's house, Conan felt so depressed but Heiji later cheers Conan up. Ran and Kazuha mention how they look like brothers.</spoiler>

== Trivia ==
* In this case, there is a character named Ray Curtis, a professional soccer player. He got his name of a popular detective named Rey Curtis from the ''[[Wikipedia:Law & Order|Law & Order]]'' series. The only difference is in their first names where is "e" exchanged for "a". Conan is also his big fan.
* Two of the famous people whom Kogoro mentioned was [[Miho Komatsu]] and [[Mai Kuraki]], these singers who does some of the opening and closing theme songs for the show.
* [[TWO-MIX]] makes a cameo appearance for the first time ever since they were [[The Kidnapping of a Popular Artist Case|kidnapped]]. However, their character designs are different in this case.

Conan and Agasa decided to bring a very sick Haibara to the clinic, but the clinic happened to be filled and they had to wait at least two hours before their turn. They then decided to first have lunch at a nearby shopping mall. At the car park of the shopping mall, they spot four porsches, with a drunk man sleeping in one of them. Later, Conan and Agasa meet Ran, Sonoko and Jodie at a restaurant while Haibara rested in Agasa's car. Conan noticed Jodie's suspicions when she heard Ran mention Haibara. With the power-window she could make the line taut and strangle the victim. She recovers the line using the rear end wheels of a model toy car. Megure questions him not hearing any sound but the toy car's batteries which run around 10 minutes should have already expired.
Taiyama confesses and says Banba was responsible for a car accident prank (tossing water) that caused her and her brother's Yellow Ferrari 360 Modena to be destroyed along with the latter's death. His supposed lack of regret for the prank drove her to kill.

After Conan solved the case, Vermouth is shown in her room and she apparently knows where Sherry is.</spoiler>

Ran tells Conan that Akai is an FBI agent causing Conan to wonder what the FBI are doing in Japan. Conan heads to Agasa to analyze the data from Itakura's disk and learn that the Black Organization were going to Itakura's cottage to retrieve the program he was working on. Conan and Agasa head to Itakura's cottage in an attempt to intercept the email the email the Black Organization would send in order to trace them. However, the email was programmed to be deleted if the correct password was not typed and subsequently causes the Black Organization members to believe Itakura is in the cottage. Vodka phones the house and believing Itakura is in the cottage, to pick up the phone.

==== Pursuit Chapter ====
Conan uses his voice changing bow tie to impersonate Itakura and is able to learn of the location and time of their planned meeting. As Conan and Agasa head to the disclosed location, a subway construction site in Tokyo, their car breaks down. Luckily they are able to hitch hike with a man and woman driving a BMW. Conan notices that the man is unfamiliar with the car due to the steering wheel being in the left side instead of the usual right side like most Japanese cars; This causes him to begin suspecting the man and women to be hiding something. While passing a police check point, they learn that the jewelry robbers had abandoned their car in that area and may be near by.

Once arriving at their destination point, Conan reveals that the two people are the '''jewelry robbers'''. Conan reveals that they hijacked a car as evidenced by the man's inability to handle the foreign car and how coins were found in the ashtray yet the man is a smoker. Conan apprehends the two culprits and proceeds to the subway. Once there Conan places the CD containing the program the Black Organization wants and places it in a coin locker with a sign on it. Vodka arrives and takes the CD but is stopped by Gin. Gin reveals that there is tape on the CD which means that someone was trying to get his fingerprint. Gin investigates the case and finds a tracker device. He places his hand on the case to find out its warm meaning the one who set up the disk is nearby. Conan manages to hide in a coin locker and passes out due to the lack of oxygen; He is found by Haibara the next day.
As there are leaving, they are seen by Shuichi Akai, who is shocked by Haibara's resemblance to Shiho Miyano.

Ran loses consciousness due to her illness and reminisces about her past with Shinichi in New York. When Ran and Shinichi had [[The Locked Room in the Sky: Shinichi Kudo%27s First Case|touched down in Los Angeles]] they were told to catch another plane to New York by Shinichi's mother, Yukiko Kudo, who takes the two to view The Golden Apple musical at Broadway. When they arrive, they are introduced to a famous actress named Sharon Vineyard, and the five performers that will be performing the musical. They learn from them that an unknown culprit had sent the performers a Golden Apple with the words "For the Fairest" written on it and presume it is a threat. While touring the theater, a medieval suit of armour is sent flying towards the group. An actress is about to be hit with the armor until Ran pushes her out of the way.

The performance of The Golden Apple begins. During the climax of the musical, the actor Heath Flockhart, who is portraying Paris, is shot.

The police arrive and come to the conclusion an unknown assailant rented out all the terraces in the theater and that they shot Heath from there. Shinichi reveals that he found a bullet in one of the terraces shortly after the murder but is was cold meaning it was set up to create the idea an audience murdered Heath. He also reveals that the falling suit if the armor from before was set up by a tripwire deduces that the murderer is one of the four actresses whom all have shared a romantic relationship with Heath. Lilas, Akane, and Rose are Heath's lovers and Iberis was Heath's wife. They kept it a secret, due to their popularity, but Sharon knew and had told Yukiko it. While Shinichi investigates to find out how the murder was done, he notices a crack in the mirror prop and realizes who the murderer is.

==== Solution Part ====
The police are still suspecting the people who are close to Flockhart at the crime scene. They checked their bodies for gunpowder but still nothing. They confirmed it was an outsider. Suddenly, the lights went off.

Shinichi tells his mother his deductions on the case to have her solve the murder. It is revealed that since the mirror was damaged, the employees of the theater fixed the mirror causing it to become shorter. Since the mirror was too low to conceal Heath during the musical, they decided to add a revolving trap door on the stage. It is then revealed besides Heath, the actress '''Rose Hewitt''' was informed of the trap door as it was her job to close the trap door when Heath is carried by wires out of it. Yukiko declares Rose to be the murderer revealing that during the time the stage was covered in the fog, Rose shot Heath through an opening between the mirror and the floor as he was rising out of the trap door. Rose then placed the gun on Heath to create the suspicion the true suspect threw the gun on stage from the terrace. As evidence, Shinichi reveals Heath grabbed onto Rose with his blood soaked hands which was found on the inside of her glove. Her motive was that Rose actually never loved Heath but his portrayal of Paris and upon hearing his transfer to another theatre production, kills him to immortalize his role. She then mocks Ran for saving her life, saying that she could have prevented this from all happening if she just let her die, and that emotionally breaks the poor girl.

Shinichi and Ran take a taxi to the hotel but stop in an alleyway when Ran's handkerchief flies out the window and onto a fire escape. Shinichi leaves to retrieve it and Ran meets a man that she almost believes it's a thug or a killer, but is a mysterious FBI agent who orders her to leave as the serial killer they are searching for is nearby. Despite starting to shoy sympthoms of a cold, and thus feeling very dizzy, Ran searches for the missing Shinichi... and finds the (wounded) serial killer on the fire escape. The man prepares to shoot Ran but when the fire escape railing breaks off, he loses his balance but is saved by Ran and Shinichi, who had been this close to catch him few seconds ago. Despite the rescue, the man decides to kill them but Shinichi warns him to stop, since the silencer of the gun he kept in his hand has fallen down from the fire escape, and if he shoots everyone will hear him and he will be soon captured. Ran collapses from her cold and Shinichi carries her away in his arms, declaring to the man that he will capture him the next time they meet. The next day, Yukiko receives a call from Sharon who tells her that she knew Rose was planning something but didn't think it'd be murder, and finishes by asking Yukiko to tell Ran that an angel is watching over her...

Ran awakens from her illness in the present time and phones Shinichi to talk about their time in New York. Shinichi reveals that the serial killer was found dead by the police shortly after their encounter. The police believes that he committed suicide, but Shinichi deduces that he was murdered.

== Manga to anime changes ==

* Because of the rearrangement on the airing order, in the anime version, the ending part of this case is included with the scene of Conan (using Shinichi's voice) discussing with Ran about the events back in New York, which should have been the beginning of [[The Truth of the Haunted House]] in the original manga series where it takes place right after this case.

== Remastered version ==
* On October 27, 2008, a remastered version of the case was aired. All three episodes were edited and combined into one hour long special, and scenes were edited out to fit the timeslot. However, exclusive to the remastering, new scenes were added to this version. In the beginning, Ran is watching television and sees a reporter talking about New York City, which brings her back to remembering the case from back then. Conan is, for some reason, holding apples, and drops them on the floor. One of those apples turns into a golden apple, and a picture of both Conan and Shinichi is visible. At the end of the case, after Ran blacks out, we can see Ran smiling to herself while remembering Shinichi touching her forehead. Conan asks her why she's smiling, and she answers "It's. A. Secret!"

Ran, feeling she met the mysterious man before, attempts to remember why. Jodie interrupts the daydreaming Ran in class and asks her the meaning of X to which she is unable to answer correctly. On the way home, they meet Jodie who takes them to the cafe in a department store to warn them about a serial groper. Conan notices a business man named Norihisa Kisugi making a suspicious phone call to a private detective agency director named Katsunori Chujou. Chujo demands Kisugi to pay four times the promised amount or he will not hand over the investigation documents concerning an unknown individual. Kisugi agrees and Chujo enters the department store only to be killed by the unknown culprit.

A coincidental blackout occurs at the same time, and when the power returns, Chujo is found dead on the top of an escalator with ○×△ written on an envelope. The police understands the message to be a dying message, and using Chujo's phone, allows them to locate the last caller, Kisugi. Kisugi reveals that he hired the detective to search for an embezzler in the company. The documented that contained the embezzler's identity is missing from Chujo's envelope and the police discern the embezzler must be the culprit. Kisugi then hands them Chujo's list of fifty-eight suspects he had received. The police decrease the suspects down to thirty-one after investigating the alibis of the suspects. Conan tells the police a line of blood is found on the edge of the envelope and explains part of Chujo's dying message must be on the escalator. Using a luminol reaction, they discover □ revealing the whole message to be □○×△; Conan notes the square is much bigger than the other three symbol.

Conan's investigation leads him to discover the meaning of the symbols, right after Jodie-sensei giving him a small hint. Apparently she was watching him through the investigation.

Conan drops hints to Inspector Megure to deduce what the symbols are. Megure explains that the symbols are outlines for kanji and □ is bigger than the other three symbols since it was not cut off. He elaborates further, explaining the three symbols are missing the top portion since they were written past the envelope and onto the document. The culprit is revealed to be '''Bunta Kuniyoshi''' (国吉文太, Kuniyoshi Bunta), correcting that the bottom of 吉 is usually more round. The police interrogate Kuniyoshi and convict him for the murder after Takagi gathers the shredded pieces of the documents with blood and piece them together forming the missing top portion of ○×△ and fully spelling Kuniyoshi's name. Kuniyoshi confesses explaining he wanted a better life for his poor family. Ran, learning the meaning of X, sends a mail to Shinichi with Xs. Elsewhere, Vermouth sends a message to Gin with X's in her message explaining they are a sign of feminine affection but can also be a sign of hate before throwing a dart at a picture of Shiho with an X through it.

* Episode 271 ends with Conan questioning why the □ symbol is larger than the other with the screen zooming out on him while showing all symbols in the background.
* The anime shows Conan sneezing after Sonoko talks about how Shinichi lacks an understanding on certain subjects.

A girl named Haruna Yuki asks Kogoro to search for a man named Shuugo whom she texts with on her pager. She explains that Shuugo sent her a musical box to help pay for her tuition but she could not bring herself to sell something valuable and wants to return it. Conan notices the music box plays the song "Haru Yo Koi" (春よ来い, lit. "Come Dear Spring") and missed three notes "La, Do, La". After tracing the number on the pager, they visit the Ogata family who reveals that Shuugo was an elderly man who had recently died.

The Ogata family reveals that Shuugo hid stamps worth a fortune somewhere in the house and they suspect Haruna is there to take it from them. They allow Kogoro, Ran, Conan, and Haruna to spend the night at their household. Conan concludes that one of the Ogata family members wants to scare Haruna away.

After tranquilizing Kogoro, Conan reveals that the shadow was created with the use of black paper tapped to a window. When a moving car light flashes through the window, it creates the shadow of a flying figure. As for the Koto, Conan explains that the Koto was suspended through a very long string which was released by the culprit. As evidence, Conan reveals that a hairpin was found at the door where the string was and the one who opened the door was '''Kazuko Ogata'''. Kazuko confesses and explains that she did not want Haruna to have the stamps since her family is currently in need of the money. Conan reveals that the missing music notes reveal the location of the stamps. Conan explains that the missing notes in Solfège are La, Do, La, but in Iroha its I-Ha-I which is referring to Spirit tablet (位牌, Ihai?). A few days after the case, Shiro Ogata reveals that he is in a relationship with Haruna and thanks Kogoro for solving the case.
