== Background ==

Of course, while Akemi lived a normal life, Haibara was sent to America as a small child to go to school and was groomed to finish her parents' research <ref> File 384-386 Volume 38 File 2-4</ref>. She was born to an English mother, Elena Miyano, and a Japanese father, Atsushi Miyano. Both of whom were members of the organization, and deceased. A prodigy, she was sent to the United States for education at a very young age, then later came back to Japan to finish her parents' secret project for the organization. By the age of thirteen she was working as a scientist for the Black Organization.<ref>Akai started infiltrating the Black Organization five years ago. He did so by becoming Akemi’s girlfriend in order to get close to Shiho and use her influence to get in. (Manga Volume 58, File 2, pg 9: "Akai's Past") According to the FBI’s description, Shiho was “a scientist for them” at the time. Shiho was about 18 years old when she developed the experimental test compound [[APTX 4869]]. She discovered that it could be used as a poison to kill without leaving any traces of itself in a body. While researching its effects, Shiho noticed that a rare few of her lab mice had become younger after being given the drug instead of dying. Meanwhile, the Black Organization started using APTX 4869 to commit untraceable murders. Unaware of the drug's rare side effect when they used it on [[Shinichi Kudo]], the Black Organization ordered a search for him because his body had not been found. Shiho searched Shinichi's house twice after he had been shrunk to confirm his death for the Black Organization. She began to suspect Shinichi's transformation after she searched his house for a second time and found that his clothes from primary school were missing. Shiho then confirmed him as deceased so the organization would not look into the matter further and kill him after all.

With no other way out, she took a pill of APTX 4869 to commit suicide, but instead shrunk into a seven or eight year old girl. As Ai Haibara, she acts older than she is supposed to be, which the Detective Boys refer to her as "cool". But despite her jaded demeanor, she has been kind and caring on occasion, though usually more to animals than people. She's a bit quiet, though this may be due to her caution to keep herself hidden from the Black Organization. She is sometimes cold and very analytical, but there are times where she softens her demeanor and reveals herself to be a true friend. Shiho is generally a loner and misses her older sister, Akemi, greatly (in the film ''Countdown to Heaven'', she would call her sister's old apartment just to hear her voice on the voicemail). Smart, stubborn, and with a somewhat twisted sense of humor, she tries to keep Conan from doing reckless things that may give away their identity, though often she is surprised by his actions that usually result in gaining the information he needs while also keeping their identities secret.

== Plot overview ==
=== Introduction of Ai Haibara ===
Conan's class receives a new student named Ai Haibara. She acts rather cold and reserved when the Detective Boys try to befriend her, and Genta notices she's looking at Conan suspiciously. She tells them where she lives but Conan fails to realize it's at Agasa's home.

After school, a boy named Toshiya asks the Detective Boys to find his missing brother. The Detective Boys along with Haibara investigate Toshiya's house and finds a painting of Natsume Sōseki. Toshiya reveals that before his brother disappeared, a woman, who had an interest in that portrait, approached Toshiya.

The Detective Boys search around town to ask whether anyone has seen the woman or Toshiya's brother. Conan notices that a man was using a counterfeit ¥1000 and realizes Toshiya's brother was actually kidnapped and forced to help create counterfeit bills. After following the man along with the clues Toshiya's brother left behind, they are able to apprehend the organized crime group and save Toshiya's brother.

On the way home, Haibara reveals to Conan that she's a girl named Shiho Miyano, former member of the Black Organization. She actualy betrayed the group and escaped with the use of the APTX 4869 which caused her to become a child. She reveals that she accidentally sent a floppy disk containing data on the Black Organization to her older sister...which is now in the possession of her sister's professor, Masami Hirota.

The suspects are Hirota's three students who visited that day. Conan reveals the culprit to be a man named Akira Shirakura; Shirakura after bludgeoning Hirota to death tied the answering machine cassette tape around the key to the room which rewound when a call was made and subsequently bringing the key into the room. As evidence, Conan reveals that Shirakura's fingerprints should be found on the tape.

Haibara breaks down and asks Conan why he could not save her sister, Akemi, from the Black Organization. Later that day, Haibara attempts to read the files off the disk only to have a virus delete all the data.

=== The first head to head battle arc ===

Haibara is kidnapped and confined to a wine cellar, but turns into an adult after she drinks [[baijiu]]. Despite wearing glasses and janitor clothing, Gin and Vodka recognize her and shoot her repeatedly until Conan appears. He shoots Gin with his needle, but Gin doesn't fall asleep. He tells Haibara to jump into the chimmey, and Vodka shoots at him, but he gets away. Gin purposely shoots himself in the arm due to trying to stay awake. Inside, Pisco almost kills her, but Conan rescues her after Pisco accidentally causes a fire. Gin kills Pisco for failure before he's able to tell him the truth about Shiho Miyano. Worried that the organization is after her, Haibara decides to leave the city.

=== The Desperate Revival arc ===
During the Desperate Revival episodes, Conan finds out that Ran suspects him of being Shinichi, due to Ran knowing Conan's blood type (for a blood transfusion). While Conan is in the hospital contemplating about admitting his identity, Haibara enters at night and points a gun at his head, saying that the Black Organization has found Haibara out due to an unknown agent being present at the Pisco incident. Because of this, Professor Agasa is held hostage and, in exchange for his life and a chance to return to the Black Organization, Haibara is required to terminate all the links she had as a child. However, she pulls the trigger and a bunch of flowers come out, showing that the story was just an act. Still, she uses this story as her point; that both Haibara and Conan cannot reveal their identities no matter the situation.

During that night, Haibara explains her plan to disassociate Conan from Shinichi in Ran's eyes. She has Conan take a prototype antidote for the shrinking drug and then disguises herself as Conan. For the rest of the arc, Conan returns as Shinichi while Haibara is present as Conan, thus creating the illusion of Shinichi and Conan existing at the same time, disproving that the two are the same person.

At the end of the Desperate Revival arc, the antidote begins to run out and Shinichi runs into the bathroom, where Haibara knocks him out using the sleeping needle. She then switches Shinichi into Conan's clothes after the antidote runs out.

=== A new threat: Vermouth, and the carjacking incident ===
Aside from Gin and Vodka being the most recurring members, a female member introduced late into the series named Vermouth also starts to play a huge role in the series. She makes her first appearance in Episodes 176-178, but her talents aren't revealed until Episode 230. She is one of the few characters who knows who Conan really is, since she'd seen Shinichi in pictures or in person via Yukiko when Shinichi was originally seven. In one episode she is saved by Ran and Shinichi from falling through a fire escape (though they don't know it's her), and keeps his secret unknown from the rest possibly because of this. She disguises herself as two actresses, Chris Vineyard and Sharon Vineyard. It is noted several times in the series that she is a master of disguise, who trained with Shinichi's mother in the past under a famous magician, [[Toichi Kuroba]], before he died.


=== The second head to head battle, and revealed allegiances ===
[[Image:Episode_345_Screencap.jpg‎|thumb|right|180px|Encounter with Vermouth.]] In Episode 345, many identities are finally unveiled: Vermouth is revealed to be Dr. Araide, Chris Vineyard, [[Sharon Vineyard]], and the silver-haired serial killer in Shinichi's New York Case; Jodie Santemillion is revealed to be an undercover FBI agent working towards capturing Vermouth, who killed her father when she was younger; Shuichi Akai is confirmed to be an FBI agent, and one with great skill too--enough to make the boss of the Black Organization believe that he is their ''Silver Bullet.'' Near the end of the episode, it becomes clear that Vermouth's purpose was to seek and eliminate Sherry, but her attempts are thwarted by several people: Shinichi/Conan, Jodie Saintemillion, Shuichi Akai, and even Ran. When she becomes cornered, she takes Conan hostage and drives away into a forest. There, she makes a call to her boss (still nameless), and to her surprise, Conan was recording the entire conversation. In order to preserve the organization's secrecy, she sprays sleeping gas in the car, putting both herself and Conan to sleep. She claims that this would be a duel--whoever wakes up first will win. Vermouth does indeed wake up first, but does not kill Conan. Instead, she just crushes his recording device. Ultimately, the only clue Conan gained from this whole ordeal is the ringtone that the boss uses; this is mentioned in Episode 425 as well, although its importance has not yet been revealed.

In Episode 394, Conan figures out the boss's number, but Haibara warns him not to call it because it is "[[Pandora's Box]]", Conan then thinks he can get Detective Takagi to figure out who the number belongs to. But then Haibara warns if he does, Detective Takagi will be killed.

Although Vermouth often comes off as evil and malicious, her allegiance is rather ambiguous. She chooses to protect both Conan/Shinichi and Ran, most likely because they let her live back in the New York Case when she was disguised as the silver-haired serial killer. At the end of the episode, she could have very well killed Shinichi, but instead she lets him live and even drapes her coat over his sleeping body so he wouldn't get cold. She even kept her promise with Shinichi to stop her attempt on killing Sherry/Shiho. For some reason, she seems to wish for the Black Organization to be taken down as well--for she believes that Shinichi Kudo is their true ''Silver Bullet.

As Conan and Haibara investigate a normal case, Haibara feels that an organization member is around. The organization member which she felt is implied to be one of the innocent suspects, [[Subaru Okiya]]. Conan invites Okiya to live in Kudo's house since Okiya's apartment was burnt. Okiya appears in other cases later on, including at the Haido mall where the rest of the Black Organization gathered to chase a rumored sighting of a [[Scar Akai|scarred Shuichi Akai]]. Despite the apparent implications, [[Bourbon]]'s true identity and Okiya's true motivations remain unconfirmed. At the end of Episode 543 (Anime), Subaru Okiya can be seen drinking a bottle of Baker's Mark, which is a brand of Kentucky Bourbon.

Ai Haibara seems to have somewhat romantic feelings for [[Conan]]/[[Shinichi]], although she never truly admits to it. In the fourth movie, she says to Conan that she wished she could forget her memories about the Black Organization and the death of her sister and the pill, claiming that all she wants to be was a normal little girl and live together with Conan forever. But then as Conan was shocked by the words, Haibara immediately said she was lying. Indeed, it is a mystery just exactly what she feels for him, whether friend or otherwise. It could be said that, because of their almost equal level of intelligence, she finds it easier to talk to him. Also, he is one of the few people in front of whom she has shown any signs of weakness, such as breaking down.

==== Hiroshi Agasa ====

The relationship between Haibara and [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]] is rather unusual, if not humorous. Despite what their actual ages are, Haibara often times acts more like a mother to the professor, constantly reminding him to watch what he eats. On several occassions, she has removed fattening foods from his reach<ref name=Depths>[[Strategy Above the Depths|Movie 9: Strategy Above the Depths]]</ref>, and is attempting to help get him into better shape. There's also been instances where she'll automatically step in front of Agasa in cases of danger.<ref name=Eyes>[[Captured in Her Eyes|Movie 4: Captured in Her Eyes]]</ref> Out of all the people she's met, Haibara seems most comfortable about acting herself with Professor Agasa; which might be attributed to the fact that he was the one who found her after she escaped the Black Organization, and took her in.

There are instances where Haibara will caution Conan from actions that involve [[Ran Mouri|Ran]], though it's assumed this is due merely to the fact that she wants to keep her identity hidden. At one point, she was very cold and distant towards Ran, just like she was to most other people. Ran believed that it was because that Haibara had hated her.<ref name=Net>[[The Mystery in the Net|Episode 246-247: The Mystery in the Net]]</ref> However, later that day, Haibara finally properly introduced herself to Ran, and they slowly became friends. Haibara finds that Ran resembles her older sister, Akemi Miyano, so she takes special interest in protecting her. [[Conan]] and [[Haibara]] have an interesting relationship. Initially, Conan scorned Haibara for being part of the Black Organization and the inventor of murderous [[APTX 4869]], but he has since warmed up to her as a valuable teammate and someone to confide his true thoughts with when they conflict with his child cover. On her part, Haibara expresses a lot of interest in Conan's personality, intelligence, and sense of justice. This has led to the theory that Haibara is in love with Conan.

He also worried about her mentally when the Black Organization is involved.

* Upon Haibara's arrival at Teitan Elementary School, Genta eagerly offers the seat next to him for her to sit in. But as Haibara walks towards the desks, she brushes right past Genta and takes the empty seat next to Conan, and in monotone says to him: "Nice to meet you." Shocking Conan, the only thing he can manage to say is: "Yeah..."

* After class is over, the Detective Boys try to catch up with Haibara in the hallway, wanting to ask her to walk home with them. Haibara ignores all of Ayumi's attempts to talk to her until she inquires about her address, to which she replies: "22 Beika Block, Second Street." Conan regards the address as familiar and remarks to himself that her house can't be too far away from where his is. Haibara then looks over her shoulder and smirks at him, again shocking Conan and causing a small blush to appear right above his nose. Genta notices and asks him if he "likes that stuck-up woman". Which Conan quickly denies.

* When Ayumi and Mitsuhiko are telling Haibara about the Detective Boys, she asks, "Edogawa-kun is in it too?". Shortly after, the Detective Boys come across a case, where a fellow classmate's older brother has been missing and wants to find him.

* After solving said case, and Ai fires a gun through a window, causing her to get a scolding from Inspector Megure, and starts fake-crying (impressively well) to get out of it. Conan walks Haibara back home to her house, while she is still crying. When Conan drops her off nearby her home, Haibara immediately stops crying and then starts talking about a drug called "APTX 4869". Conan is confused, as Haibara continues to ramble about the drug, how he took it, and how she did too. It is apparent that Haibara isn't just your average little girl. It is not until Haibara tells Conan that she's occupied Professor Agasa's house and that he's "not in this world anymore", that Conan begins to freak out. He tries to call Professor Agasa but does not get an answer, while Haibara smirks evilly in the background (she's got the upper hand, at the moment). Conan then leaves Haibara behind and sprints to Professor Agasa's house, hoping to find him safe.

* Later on, Conan, Haibara, and Agasa come across another case. One involving the locked-room-murder of a university professor. After Conan solves the case, Agasa and Conan decide to head back home. When Conan gestures for Haibara to come along, we see a tear roll down her face as she asks why he didn't help her sister. To answer a confused Conan's face, Haibara explains (still in tears) that Hirota Misami was a fake name her sister took from the now-deceased university professor, and Conan realizes that the same girl (from the previous episode) who died during the one-billion-yen robbery case. Haibara continues to shout at a stunned Conan, with all his deducing skills, he should have been able to see right through her sister's case. Haibara breaks down and falls on her knees in front of Conan and clutches his shirt and continues to cry into it. The unfeeling boy, unlike a normal sympathetic human being, denies the very-teary Ai Haibara clutching onto him like she was his only life line (in a way, he was) the hug she very well deserved. But Conan silently thinks to himself: "This is probably the first true face she's ever showed me."

Near the end of the second part of this case, Haibara stares off into the distance after Conan made a joke about her being 84 years old. She tells him "I'm only eighteen, about a year older than you. Maybe someday..." before she stares off into the distance again. In the manga version she says "I'm 18, just perfect for you" but quickly said "I'm kidding".

Conan Edogawa gets lost in a castle where the Detective Boys are staying at and when every one tries to look for him it starts raining. Haibara tells Ayumi to stop crying and that "Edogawa-kun isn't the type to make you worry. He'll come back himself." then comments on Ayumi's bag and about not letting her tears enter it. Ayumi replies, "Hey how do you know Conan-kun so well..."
Haibara replies, "Come on. Why do you ask?"
"Is it because you like him, right?"
Haibara, surprised but recovers, asks, "What if I do?"
Ayumi replies, "Then...I'm in trouble..." implying that there will be a love triangle if she does. Haibara sees Ayumi is worried and does not want to mess with her anymore and plainly states she does not have those kinds of feelings for him.

At the start of the second Gomera movie, Ayumi falls asleep and puts her head on Conan's shoulder. When Conan turns to Haibara saying he needs to use the restroom and asks her if she would switch seats, she puts her head on Conan's shoulder too, having fallen asleep as well.

We see Conan's face, but it doesn't appear to be at all surprised, and Haibara continues with: "I guess you didn't even notice... Kamen Yaiba-san." After Mitsuhiko yells out "CUT!", it is revealed that both Conan and Haibara were merely acting, and practicing lines for Teitan Elementary School's play, with Mitsuhiko as the director.

During the entire episode, Haibara is seriously frightened of Gin because the night before she dreamed that he discovered her true identity and killed everyone she had contact with. She made a point to also confide to Conan that she dreamed that he was shot first, which symbolizes a great fear over any harm done to him.

* Also, while they are in Professor Agasa's car following Gin and Vodka to the Haido City Hotel. She seems to be pleased by Conan's decision to stop Pisco from murdering someone (rather than just concentrating on Gin, Vodka, and the drug) and says, "Oh, what a strong sense of justice you have" with a proud smile. Because of his decision to do the right thing, she follows him into harms way knowing that she could be murdered immediately (because Gin can recognize her using only a strand of her hair) and enters Haido City Hotel against her premonitions.

* After Haibara says, "Maybe if I had been killed by the organization back then, there would be less hassle for everyone," Conan cuts her off by giving up his glasses (the only thing preventing people from recognizing him) and putting them on her to make her feel safer. After they have a conversation about his action's relevance to Superman/Clark Kent, Haibara turns away bashfully and thanks him and he looks at her for a while, a small smile growing on to his face, and he says, "You really are adorable."

* Shiho is shot multiple times by Gin on the roof of the Haido City Hotel and Conan, on the first floor, is running as fast as he can, screaming her name all the way there.

* After Haibara shrinks back to child size, Conan puts his jacket on her naked body and carries her from the fire before Pisco and Gin can discover them.

She then pulled the trigger, but it turned out that it was a fake gun that shot red roses from the barrel. Symbolically, red roses represent love or passion, suggesting that Haibara might have romantic feelings towards Conan.

Haibara was petrified because she felt a familiar and scary presence from [[Black Organization]] around. (She was right because Vermouth was disguised as Dr. Araide at that time) When Jodie asked Conan for her name, she grabbed onto his hand desperately and he understood her fear, simply saying she was a random girl he happened to sit next to.

For example, during [[The Mysterious Passenger]] episodes, Haibara chose to stay on the bus (which contained a bomb) in an attempt to suicide so she wouldn't have to worry about her future or the Black Organization anymore. Conan rushed back into the bus at risk of his own life and saved her, telling her to not run away from her destiny. Conan was injured in the process and used his blood to give the police a reason to send Haibara to the hospital, possibly as a way to keep an eye on her. It is also noted that Conan may have thought a Black Organization member was onboard the bus, so he tried to send her away.

She blushes from the comment until Conan says the wrong joke that she was 90 years old (she corrected him that she is 84 years old with scorn).

Conan is shocked and insists she'd probably only been looking at him to see how the "test subject" for APTX 4869 was doing. Despite this, Conan later tests Haibara, otherwise.

* Before Yukiko left the Detective Boys, Conan and Haibara she's quick to remind Conan to: "never leave her side," before she drives off. To which Conan irritably replies: "I know, I know."

She does not reply verbally but turns her head around, as she had her back to him before, to listen. Conan then asks: "Is there something on my face?" with something of a confused face. == Plot overview ==
=== Introduction of Ai Haibara ===
Conan's class receives a new student named Ai Haibara. She acts rather cold and reserved when the Detective Boys try to befriend her, and Genta notices she's looking at Conan suspiciously. She tells them where she lives but Conan fails to realize it's at Agasa's home.

After school, a boy named Toshiya asks the Detective Boys to find his missing brother. The Detective Boys along with Haibara investigate Toshiya's house and finds a painting of Natsume Sōseki. Toshiya reveals that before his brother disappeared, a woman, who had an interest in that portrait, approached Toshiya.

The Detective Boys search around town to ask whether anyone has seen the woman or Toshiya's brother. Conan notices that a man was using a counterfeit ¥1000 and realizes Toshiya's brother was actually kidnapped and forced to help create counterfeit bills. After following the man along with the clues Toshiya's brother left behind, they are able to apprehend the organized crime group and save Toshiya's brother.

On the way home, Haibara reveals to Conan that she's a girl named Shiho Miyano, former member of the Black Organization. She actualy betrayed the group and escaped with the use of the APTX 4869 which caused her to become a child. She reveals that she accidentally sent a floppy disk containing data on the Black Organization to her older sister...which is now in the possession of her sister's professor, Masami Hirota.

The suspects are Hirota's three students who visited that day. Conan reveals the culprit to be a man named Akira Shirakura; Shirakura after bludgeoning Hirota to death tied the answering machine cassette tape around the key to the room which rewound when a call was made and subsequently bringing the key into the room. As evidence, Conan reveals that Shirakura's fingerprints should be found on the tape.

Haibara breaks down and asks Conan why he could not save her sister, Akemi, from the Black Organization. Later that day, Haibara attempts to read the files off the disk only to have a virus delete all the data.

=== The first head to head battle arc ===

Haibara is kidnapped and confined to a wine cellar, but turns into an adult after she drinks [[baijiu]]. Despite wearing glasses and janitor clothing, Gin and Vodka recognize her and shoot her repeatedly until Conan appears. He shoots Gin with his needle, but Gin doesn't fall asleep. He tells Haibara to jump into the chimmey, and Vodka shoots at him, but he gets away. Gin purposely shoots himself in the arm due to trying to stay awake. Inside, Pisco almost kills her, but Conan rescues her after Pisco accidentally causes a fire. Gin kills Pisco for failure before he's able to tell him the truth about Shiho Miyano. Worried that the organization is after her, Haibara decides to leave the city.

=== The Desperate Revival arc ===
During the Desperate Revival episodes, Conan finds out that Ran suspects him of being Shinichi, due to Ran knowing Conan's blood type (for a blood transfusion). While Conan is in the hospital contemplating about admitting his identity, Haibara enters at night and points a gun at his head, saying that the Black Organization has found Haibara out due to an unknown agent being present at the Pisco incident. Because of this, Professor Agasa is held hostage and, in exchange for his life and a chance to return to the Black Organization, Haibara is required to terminate all the links she had as a child. However, she pulls the trigger and a bunch of flowers come out, showing that the story was just an act. Still, she uses this story as her point; that both Haibara and Conan cannot reveal their identities no matter the situation.

During that night, Haibara explains her plan to disassociate Conan from Shinichi in Ran's eyes. She has Conan take a prototype antidote for the shrinking drug and then disguises herself as Conan. For the rest of the arc, Conan returns as Shinichi while Haibara is present as Conan, thus creating the illusion of Shinichi and Conan existing at the same time, disproving that the two are the same person.

At the end of the Desperate Revival arc, the antidote begins to run out and Shinichi runs into the bathroom, where Haibara knocks him out using the sleeping needle. She then switches Shinichi into Conan's clothes after the antidote runs out.

=== A new threat: Vermouth, and the carjacking incident ===
Aside from Gin and Vodka being the most recurring members, a female member introduced late into the series named Vermouth also starts to play a huge role in the series. She makes her first appearance in Episodes 176-178, but her talents aren't revealed until Episode 230. She is one of the few characters who knows who Conan really is, since she'd seen Shinichi in pictures or in person via Yukiko when Shinichi was originally seven. In one episode she is saved by Ran and Shinichi from falling through a fire escape (though they don't know it's her), and keeps his secret unknown from the rest possibly because of this. She disguises herself as two actresses, Chris Vineyard and Sharon Vineyard. It is noted several times in the series that she is a master of disguise, who trained with Shinichi's mother in the past under a famous magician, [[Toichi Kuroba]], before he died.

[[Image:Episode_345_Screencap.jpg‎|thumb|right|180px|Encounter with Vermouth.]] In Episode 345, many identities are finally unveiled: Vermouth is revealed to be Dr. Araide, Chris Vineyard, [[Sharon Vineyard]], and the silver-haired serial killer in Shinichi's New York Case; Jodie Santemillion is revealed to be an undercover FBI agent working towards capturing Vermouth, who killed her father when she was younger; Shuichi Akai is confirmed to be an FBI agent, and one with great skill too--enough to make the boss of the Black Organization believe that he is their ''Silver Bullet.'' Near the end of the episode, it becomes clear that Vermouth's purpose was to seek and eliminate Sherry, but her attempts are thwarted by several people: Shinichi/Conan, Jodie Saintemillion, Shuichi Akai, and even Ran. When she becomes cornered, she takes Conan hostage and drives away into a forest. There, she makes a call to her boss (still nameless), and to her surprise, Conan was recording the entire conversation. In order to preserve the organization's secrecy, she sprays sleeping gas in the car, putting both herself and Conan to sleep. She claims that this would be a duel--whoever wakes up first will win. Vermouth does indeed wake up first, but does not kill Conan. Instead, she just crushes his recording device. Ultimately, the only clue Conan gained from this whole ordeal is the ringtone that the boss uses; this is mentioned in Episode 425 as well, although its importance has not yet been revealed.

In Episode 394, Conan figures out the boss's number, but Haibara warns him not to call it because it is "[[Pandora's Box]]", Conan then thinks he can get Detective Takagi to figure out who the number belongs to. But then Haibara warns if he does, Detective Takagi will be killed.

Although Vermouth often comes off as evil and malicious, her allegiance is rather ambiguous. She chooses to protect both Conan/Shinichi and Ran, most likely because they let her live back in the New York Case when she was disguised as the silver-haired serial killer. At the end of the episode, she could have very well killed Shinichi, but instead she lets him live and even drapes her coat over his sleeping body so he wouldn't get cold. She even kept her promise with Shinichi to stop her attempt on killing Sherry/Shiho. For some reason, she seems to wish for the Black Organization to be taken down as well--for she believes that Shinichi Kudo is their true ''Silver Bullet.

Okiya appears in other cases later on, including at the Haido mall where the rest of the Black Organization gathered to chase a rumored sighting of a [[Scar Akai|scarred Shuichi Akai]]. Despite the apparent implications, [[Bourbon]]'s true identity and Okiya's true motivations remain unconfirmed. At the end of Episode 543 (Anime), Subaru Okiya can be seen drinking a bottle of Baker's Mark, which is a brand of Kentucky Bourbon.

The relationship between Haibara and [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]] is rather unusual, if not humorous. Despite what their actual ages are, Haibara often times acts more like a mother to the professor, constantly reminding him to watch what he eats. Shiho's English mother, [[Elena Miyano]], and Japanese father, [[Atsushi Miyano]], were both important researchers for the Black Organization. They both died in what other members of the Black Organization described as an accident while Shiho was very young.

While Akemi lived a normal life, Shiho was sent to America as a small child to go to school and was groomed to finish her parents' research on [[APTX 4869]].<ref> File 384-386 Volume 38 File 2-4</ref>. Most of her time in America was lonely; she ate lunch alone, and was otherwise isolated from peers for being different. Despite the difficult social situation, Shiho was an academic prodigy, and by the age of thirteen she was working as a highly ranked scientist for the Black Organization.<ref>Akai started infiltrating the Black Organization five years ago. He did so by becoming Akemi’s girlfriend in order to get close to Shiho and use her influence to get in. (Manga Volume 58, File 2, pg 9: "Akai's Past") According to the FBI’s description, Shiho was “a scientist for them” at the time. Furthermore this took place in Japan since everyone was speaking Japanese, Akemi lived in Japan, and the FBI bust two years prior to the current timeline was in Japan (607 pg 8). If Shiho is 18 now, she would be 13 at the time Akai started infiltrating the Black Organization and she was already a scientist for them at this point and high ranked.</ref> Her codename in the Black Organization is "Sherry", after the alcoholic drink.

Shiho was about 18 years old when she developed the most current incarnation of the experimental test compound [[APTX 4869]]. Although it was not her intended purpose<ref>Manga Volume 18, File 9, page 9</ref>, she discovered that it could be used as a poison to kill without leaving any traces of itself in a body. While researching its effects, Shiho noticed that one of her lab mice had become younger after being given the drug instead of dying. Meanwhile, the Black Organization started using APTX 4869 to commit untraceable murders.

After the death of her sister at the hands of [[Gin]], she later escaped the Black Organization after she took APTX 4869 to commit suicide but shrank instead to elementary school child age. Initially, Shiho was very cynical, which was reflected in her valuing her own security above idealistic principles of justice. She also did not wish to become close to others. While schooling in America, she ate lunch alone. It was only by repeatedly approaching her that the [[Detective Boys]] and [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] finally become her friends. Shiho was also untrusting of others in general, and preferred to put on an expressionless, cold mask while bottling up her pain and sadness. Shiho's views about death have been complex and at times contradictory. She was prepared to likely kill [[Ki'ichiro Numabuchi]] with APTX 4869 as part of her tests, but on the other hand, she detested the Black Organization's use of APTX as a killing tool and Conan labeling her as a murderer.

===Prior to Escape===
After being orphaned by the death of [[Atsushi Miyano|her]] [[Elena Miyano|parents]] at a young age, Shiho was groomed to take over their [[APTX 4869]] research project. She was educated overseas in America before returning to Japan at or before she was 13. She became a high ranking member, codenamed Sherry, in the Black Organization's internal drug development division.<ref>Conan Drill page 237</ref> When she was about 13,<ref>Five years before present timeline</ref> undercover [[FBI]] agent [[Shuichi Akai]] began dating Shiho's sister [[Akemi Miyano]] in order to use Shiho's rank to his advantage while infiltrating the Black Organization.

During the 5+ years Shiho worked in the Black Organization lab, Akemi was Shiho's lifeline to normalcy and her primary emotional support within the darkness of the Black Organization. Akemi would arrange meetings with Shiho in restaurants and such to chat about current happenings, and Shiho would sometimes tell Akemi about her Black Organization activities, although it appears she did not go into much detail.<ref name="Akemi Meeting">Volume 18, File 10, Page 15</ref> Akemi would also send Shiho floppies of pictures of her travels and friends which Shiho would quickly look at. During this time, Shiho accidentally mixed up the disks and mailed a disk of extremely sensitive information back to Akemi by mistake. The disk eventually would up in the hands of Akemi's professor friend, Masami Hirota.

Shiho received the data about him, but he managed to escape the Black Organization before she could test it on him. Shiho fled the Black Organization herself soon after, so her superiors never found a substitute test subject. [[Shinichi Kudo]] wound up being the first "guinea pig" of APTX 4869 according to [[Gin]], who decided to use the newly approved poison to kill him after Shinichi witnessed a Black Organization transaction.

Unaware of the APTX 4869's rare deaging side effect when they used it on Shinichi Kudo, the Black Organization ordered a search for him because his body had not been found. As the creator of the drug, Shiho was part of the team who searched Shinichi's house twice to confirm his death. She began to suspect Shinichi's transformation when she noticed his clothes from primary school had disappeared between the first and second searches. Sometime earlier, one mouse dosed with APTX 4869 had become younger, so she suspected something similar had happened to Shinichi. Shiho did not want the Black Organization to kill such an interesting "test subject" before she could examine him, so Shiho confirmed Shinichi as deceased so the organization would not look into the matter further. Shiho later met with Akemi and told her that she went to Kudo's house in Beika city to "look after something".<ref name="Akemi Meeting"/>

Meanwhile, Akemi Miyano wished that she and Shiho could leave the Black Organization. The Black Organization itself was in an awkward position as Akemi had been in love with the FBI spy, Shuichi Akai, whose true allegiance had since been uncovered when Shiho was about 16.<ref>Two years before present timeline</ref> The Black Organization could not simply kill Akemi because that would jeopardize the loyalty of Shiho, who was valuable to the Black Organization's research efforts. Exasperated, the Black Organization came up with a trap for Akemi; they told her that she could leave the Black Organization with Shiho if she would rob 10 billion yen from a bank for them. The Black Organization expected Akemi to fail, which would give them the excuse to eliminate her while keeping Shiho loyal; however Akemi, with a team of robbers, succeeded in obtaining the money.

In the event of her success, the Black Organization had designed the second part of the robbery plan so that Akemi's assistants would kill each other or be unintentionally killed by the unwitting Akemi. However one accomplice had fled, forcing Akemi to use detective [[Kogoro Mouri]] to find him. After her first meeting with Kogoro, Akemi met with Shiho again.<ref name="Akemi Meeting"/> Akemi had not told Shiho about the robbery plan, but it seems that Shiho's detection of the Black Organization aura from Akemi<ref>Mitsuhiko's Mystifying Forest case (some translations do not have this line correct)</ref> and gossip had made Shiho aware that Akemi had done something dangerous. Without telling Shiho about the robbery, Akemi redirected the conversation to [[Conan Edogawa]], whom Akemi said was brilliant and had the composure of an adult. This conversation likely helped Shiho deduce Conan's identity as the missing Shinichi.

Later, after all the accomplices were killed, Akemi planned to hand access to the money over to Gin and Vodka at the shipyard.<ref>This is based on the manga version of this case. The anime alters this scene</ref> Instead, Gin murdered Akemi. A newspaper took a photo of the crime scene that included Conan looking downcast. Shiho later identified Conan using it.

Shiho already resented the Black Organization for using the incomplete APTX 4869 for killing purposes, but the news of Akemi's death was the final straw that induced Shiho to boycott her research until she received an official explanation for why her sister was killed. The Black Organization refused, and faced with the possibility that Shiho could defect or do something else drastic in revenge, decided to cut their loses by executing Shiho.

Awaiting her execution, Shiho was handcuffed to a wall in a sealed room that also featured a garbage chute too small for an adult to fit in. With no other way out, she took a pill of APTX 4869 she had pocketed to commit suicide before she could be killed, but instead she shrank into a six- or seven-year-old girl. In her new, smaller body, she slipped her hand free of the cuff and used the garbage chute to escape the sealed room. She then attempted to reach Shinichi Kudo's house, hoping he might be able to help her. In [[Reunion with the Black Organization]], Conan and Haibara find Gin's [[Cars#Porsche_356A|Porsche]] by chance. Conan plants a tracker and transmitter in the parked car and eavesdrops on Gin and Vodka when they return. Gin calls an agent named [[Pisco]] and discusses part of a plan to kill someone at a mourning party that will take place at the [[Haido City Hotel]]. Gin tells Pisco he can use the [[APTX 4869|"experimental detective"]] if needed. Gin then finds the tracker and destroys it, believing Sherry placed it there because he also found a single red hair that Haibara inadvertently lost while Conan was planting the bugs. Gin then warns Pisco about Sherry. Although initially reluctant, after hearing Pisco has APTX, Haibara decides to go to the party to try to obtain a sample. Pisco, who knew Shiho as a child, recognizes her as Haibara, kidnaps her using chloroform, and confines her in a wine storage room in another part of the hotel. He doesn't get the opportunity to tell anyone about his discovery because the police are rounding up suspects for the mourning party murder and he is one of them.

After Haibara wakes up, Conan tells Haibara to drink some [[baijiu]] in order to escape. While waiting for the change to occur, she copies some APTX data from a computer Pisco left behind onto a floppy disk. Haibara turns back into Shiho and changes into some leftover janitor clothes that Pisco left behind in the room as part of his disguise. Gin and Vodka break into the storage room looking for Pisco, but Shiho manages to hide herself just before they arrive by bracing her body in the chimney. Unfortunately, Gin hears her breathing and finds another one of her hairs. Instead of simply shooting her in the chimney, however, he goes to the roof to wait for her to finish climbing.

After exchanging some banter, Gin demands to know how Shiho escaped from the locked chamber room. Shiho remains silent, so Gin shoots her several more times non-fatally, hoping she will crack. Eventually, Gin and Vodka realize she won't talk, so Gin prepares to kill her. Conan meanwhile has arrived and darts Gin in the back with his tranquilizer watch. Using the voice changer to disguise his voice, Conan orders her to get back to the chimney. Vodka shoots Shiho just as she reaches the chimney, so Shiho falls down awkwardly.

In the fireplace, Shiho reverts back into Ai Haibara while Pisco watches. He congratulates her for having made so much progress on the APTX, whose effects he has just witnessed. He tells Shiho he was a close friend of the Miyanos while they were still alive, and they told him much about the drug they were developing. He knew her from when she was a baby, even though Shiho does not remember him. Pisco prepares to shoot her, but Conan stops him by distracting him at the last minute. Conan manages to trick Pisco into setting himself and the room on fire, and carries Haibara out of the room on his back before Pisco can find them again. Gin comes down the chimney and confronts Pisco. Before Pisco is able to tell Gin the truth about Shiho and APTX 4869, Gin kills Pisco for accidentally getting his picture taken in the act of murder during the mourning party.

Conan sneaks Haibara to Agasa's beetle and gives her his jacket. Haibara then lies to Conan about losing the disk of APTX data she copied.<ref>The bloody disk is on the bottom of the stack shown in Volume 25 File 9 (Chapter 251), Page 8 and Episode 188.</ref> Worried that the organization knows that she has shrunk, Haibara tells Conan she must leave the city. Agasa tells Haibara that her identity is safe because he eavesdropped on the conversation when Gin killed Pisco by using the tracking glasses Shiho dropped when she fell down the chimney.

After the death of Shiho's parents, Akemi became Shiho's only true ally within the darkness of the Black Organization. Through direct conversation and mail, Akemi showed Shiho the normal side of life that Shiho was unable to experience. Akemi would often admonish Shiho gently to do things normal for her age, such as encouraging her to get a boyfriend. Akemi's death had enough emotional impact to convince Shiho to betray the Black Organization by boycotting her research, even though she knew the act of defiance would likely result in her own death. Shiho greatly misses Akemi. In the non-canon [[Movie 5]], Shiho's desire to hear Akemi's voice again, even if only a message on a phone answering machine, was used by Gin and Vodka to nearly pinpoint Shiho's location.

Elena died when Shiho was young, so Shiho doesn't remember much of her. Elena left tapes for Shiho for each of her birthdays. While spying on the suspicious men, Shinichi does not notice [[Gin|another man in black]], who knocks him out from behind and forces him to swallow a new experimental poison known as [[APTX 4869]]. As Conan, Shinichi helps Ran's father solve cases by putting him to sleep and simulating Kogoro's voice using the special bowtie gadget Professor Agasa made for him. He also spends a good amount of time with his Detective Boys fellows and solves many small cases with them and sometimes in the company of Professor Agasa. In some situations, when there's only Ran, Sonoko, and himself, he will use Sonoko instead to solve the case at hand. Because of that, Sonoko eventually becomes another rather well-known "sleeping" detective although her reputation is only known to the local police investigation team and Sonoko's friends. In much later files, Conan has solved the case as himself then claimed afterwards that "Shinichi-niichan told him it".

As Conan, Shinichi tries to behave like a child. He refers to Ran as "Ran-neechan" (''nee-chan'' meaning older sister, a common nickname Japanese children give to teenagers and young adults they look up to), and refers to Shinichi as "Shinichi-niichan" (''nii-chan'' meaning older brother). He also refers to Kogoro as "Oji-san" or "Occhan" (both meaning Uncle), although he also does this as Shinichi. As Shinichi, he refers to Conan as usually "Conan-kun" or the "Kid in the Glasses". Shinichi treats Conan as a separate person completely, thinking for example, "changing back into Conan".

Conan remains very close to Ran, who in return is very protective of him. However, because Ran is unaware of his true identity, Conan often finds himself in awkward situations with her, such as when she confessed her feeling for Shinichi to him and when she made him bathe with her at a hot spring.

Conan tried to speak in a child-like tone of voice when dealing with adults, but he often gets caught up in the current case and begins speaking like an adult, referring to advanced topics and using reasoning much too complex for a normal child. When this happens, he often tries to pass it off as "something [he] heard on TV". Conan tends to act more like himself around the [[Detective Boys]], even to the point that they find it odd when he acts like a child around adults. He will often play games like baseball with the Detective Boys, but he is too used to soccer to perform well and will even instinctively use soccer techniques, such as kicking in games that do not call for it. Because he is unfamiliar with popular games and TV shows, Genta and the others tend to think of him as dumb. This annoys Conan so much that he will secretly watch TV in the living room after Kogoro and Ran go to sleep to get more "practice" in.

Conan has dark brown hair which mostly hangs downwards just above his blue eyes, but there are also a few strands that stick up at the front and back of his head. Conan's usual outfit consists of a blue suit jacket with a single button and a pair of shorts, red trainers and white socks, even though he has taken to wearing more casual clothing as time goes on. He also wears a red bowtie and his dad's old glasses. Both these items were later [[Gadgets|specifically modified]] by Professor Agasa to include a [[Voice-Changing Bowtie|voice changer]], [[Button Speaker|microphone]], and [[Criminal Tracking Glasses|homing device]], to aid in Conan in his cases. His [[Power-Enhancing Kick Shoes|red runners]] have also been modified to harness electric and magnetic fields to stimulate pressure points on Conan's foot, greatly enhancing his kicking power.

All of Shinichi's detective skills carry over to his Conan form, although Conan does not the have the reputation Shinichi had. He has a keen eye for details, and can spot any "strange points", in a case that most people tend to ignore or not take into account. This comes from his photographic memory{{citation needed}}, of being able to remember every abstract of an investigation. Conan's fastidious attention to detail allows him to notice minor inconsistencies in crime scenes and suspect testimony, and using astute logic he uncovers the reasons behind those inconsistencies in order to link them to the crime. Conan has extraordinarily broad knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases; something he likely acquired from his incessant reading in his "first childhood".

As a child, Conan can attract less suspicion while investigating crime scenes, get away with searching people's personal property, and ask innocent questions without setting suspects on guard, although it comes with the drawback of not having Shinichi's authority or reputation.

Conan is just as skilled as Shinichi in soccer, but a lot less powerful because he only has the strength of a young child. To make up for this, Conan uses Agasa's Power-enhancing kick shoes. Conan uses signature, powerful precision kick to knockout criminals using soccer balls or whatever substitute is handy. Like Shinichi, Conan's kick is accurate over distances and he is capable of mentally reckoning the angle of impact necessary to rebound a soccer ball off a wall and strike an attacker from behind. He is also good at skiing and snowboarding.

Conan also has some skill with firearms despite the recoil being much more severe for a child's body. He shoots out a bus window during a bus hijacking, and precisely grazes Ran's leg to render her useless as a hostage in the second movie.

Conan's nimbleness is especially noticeable in the non-[[canon]] movies. For example, in the sixth movie, Conan is seen to fight with various antagonists, and he even holds his own against Jack the Ripper, a notorious serial killer who bests even Ran in combat. In the fourteenth movie, Conan does a back flip on his skateboard in order to avoid being killed by the blimp's hijackers. Conan shows a proclivity for skateboarding. In the movies and anime, Conan can easily perform very complicated tricks and dodges with his skateboard at high speed.

After Shinichi becomes Conan, he sets out to find the men in black almost immediately. At the suggestion of Agasa, he moves in with Ran and Kogoro, hoping that cases related to them come by. Pretty soon, a case involving a woman name [[Akemi Miyano]] (using the alias Masami Hirota) appears. Akemi robs a bank for the men in black in the hopes that they will free her sister from their organization. Conan is unable to realize the case's connection to the organization until after the men in black have shot Akemi and left her for dead for trying to double cross them. Ran plays a nurturing protective role and treats Conan like a child version of Shinichi. They do a lot of activities together such as swimming, going to the movies or festivals, and more. Ran and Conan both look out for each other's wellbeing. Ran stands up for Conan during Kogoro's outbursts and destroys any criminals seeking to inflict harm on Conan with her karate. Conan lends an ear and advice when Ran is in an difficult situation or needs to vent, and he comforts and encourages her when she is feeling down, especially about Shinichi being away for so long. It is even likely that Ran unconsciously knows that Conan actually ''is'' Shinichi, even though she seems reluctant to follow that notion.<ref>Ran told Conan that if only he is Shinichi on Episode 308.</ref>

Kogoro's deduction doesn't seem to improve so Conan almost always needs to knock Kogoro out when he starts spouting off incorrect theories. Although in most cases Conan merely sees Mouri as a drunk idiot, he often is impressed when Kogoro gets serious and actually gets the case right, so he will allow the "non-sleeping Kogoro" to take the spotlight. Kogoro views Conan as a freeloader who constantly gets underfoot and never fails to insinuate himself at cases, "interfere" with the scene, and pipe up with childish observations that consistently ruin Kogoro's deductions.

==== Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo ====
Conan's parents, [[Yusaku Kudo|Yusaku]] and [[Yukiko Kudo|Yukiko]], like to push their child towards becoming an even better detective. They enjoy giving out challenges and sometimes without letting Conan know who's giving them: they disguised once to simulate a case and force Conan to discover their identities by his own means.

Yukiko loves to meddle in Conan's (and Shinichi's) love life as she will often make allusions such as Ran being her possible future daughter-in-law or Ai and Ayumi having feelings for Conan. He doesn't usually pay much attention to them. Once she has mentioned that Ai has romantic feelings for him because she looked at him ten times, saying that the only time a girl would do that is if she likes the boy or the boy has something on his face. Conan simply pushes it off as Ai checking on her "lab mouse," but at night, in bed, Conan asks Ai if he has something on his face.

Conan's mother helped him out once to keep his secret identity from being exposed to Ran by creating an alibi for him.

Conan treats [[Hiroshi Agasa|Agasa]] as a member of his own family, like an uncle. Due to the fact that they both share the secret behind Shinichi's transformation and knowledge about the Black Organization, Conan often comes to him when in trouble or seeking for help. Agasa's willingness to help whenever possible makes Shinichi's life as Conan more convenient. He was the one who created most of Conan's gadgets, including his power shoes and tracking glasses. He willingly plays Conan's case solving mouthpiece when Conan lacks someone else convenient to use. When Conan needs something, like info from past cases for example, he usually asks Agasa to get it. Agasa often acts as a chauffeur because he is trustworthy and the only adult with a car regularly available.

Agasa often worries about Shinichi, especially when he thinks Shinichi might be going over his head. Agasa almost always responds positively to Shinichi's requests, but doesn't like it when Shinichi hides the reasons for it, especially if it is dangerous.

====Heiji Hattori====

When they first meet, Conan and [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] seem bound to become lifelong rivals even after Kudo bests Heiji in their first case. However, after discovering Conan's real identity, Heiji starts to act like an older brother towards him much to the annoyance of Conan. Since then, the two have become rather close friends, and consult one another on cases, developments concerning the Black Organization, and even their "girlfriends". They tend to stick together on cases, although sometimes this is because Heiji forces the less enthusiastic Conan to come along. While fond of Heiji as a fellow detective he can relate to, Conan finds Heiji's antics more of an annoyance than anything. Much to Conan's chagrin, Heiji even convinces others that Conan is his disciple. Conan especially dislikes Heiji's dangerous habit of calling Conan 'Kudo' when others are present.

Heiji hasn't seemed to have gotten over the former rivalry as well as Kudo has, so he hates being to compared to Shinichi. Heiji gets especially annoyed if anyone claims Shinichi is better (or even equal), and will often go to great lengths to show "west" (Osaka) is better than "east" (Tokyo). Shinichi usually starts off acting like he is disinterested in the frivolous competition, but may then become competitive himself if Heiji starts "winning" or someone bruises his ego. Others, like Ran and Kazuha, see them both as equally skilled detectives.

[[Shuichi Akai|Akai]] has been shown to respect Conan's detective skills. It may not take long before Akai figures out Conan and Shinichi are one and the same. Conan once says to Akai, "I'm glad you're an ally."

Even though [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]] do not yet know who's stopping their operations, Gin has been shown to be curious who "that guy" is, "that guy" being Conan. Gin has tried to catch a glimpse of Conan's face in a helicopter in the movie, [[The Raven Chaser]], but failed after Conan successfully downed the helicopter. Conan seems to have a very bitter hatred towards them, and this only increases as more people are targeted by the Black Organization.

====Vermouth====
[[Vermouth]] seems to have great personal interest in Conan, constantly calling him as the Black Organization's 'Silver Bullet'. She also protects Conan probably because when she was disguising as a serial killer in New York, she was saved by Conan (Shinichi at the time) and Ran. Conan does not, however, seems to react strongly when she is mentioned. He also seems to consider her less of a threat than the other members because he was able to bargain with her about Haibara and knows Vermouth is keeping his secret for personal reasons.

====Kaitou Kid====
Before being shrunk, Shinichi had encountered [[Kaitou Kid]] once during the Clock Tower heist, though they did not meet face-to-face. In their next encounter, however, after Shinichi had become Conan, Kid disguised himself as Ran in order to steal the Suzuki Black Star pearl. When Conan cornered him on the Suzuki cruise ship, Kid suggested that he'd stolen all of Ran's clothes to impersonate her, and left her naked on the deck. While this ended up being a bluff, Conan was shocked and infuriated. In subsequent encounters between Kid and Conan, Conan displays a much more intense desire to capture Kid. In several instances he appears to be able to 'sense' Kid's presence; knowing Kid is close by often causes Conan to behave far more frenetically. However, in several instances, beginning with the "Big Adventure in the Eccentric Residence" case, when Kid does Conan/Shinichi a favor, such as saving Genta's life in the aforementioned case, Conan reciprocates by halting his investigation just shy of capturing Kid, thereby allowing him to escape unhindered.

In the movies, it is implied that Kid knows Conan's identity; he even helps Conan maintain his cover by disguising himself as Shinichi so that a suspicious Ran would stop suspecting Conan. However, this has not been confirmed by Gosho Aoyama, nor has it been implied in the manga.

There are only a few characters in the series who know Conan's real identity. None of them have ever betrayed Conan's identity to date. The main characters to know the secret are [[Hiroshi Agasa]], [[Yusaku Kudo]], [[Yukiko Kudo]], [[Heiji Hattori]], and [[Ai Haibara]]. [[Vermouth]] of the Black Organization also knows about Conan's secret. Later in Episode 508 of the anime, [[Eisuke Hondou]] confirms Conan's identity as [[Shinichi Kudo]] straight from him.

The 3rd, 8th, and 14th movies also demonstrate that Kaitou Kid apparently knows Conan's identity and acts to protect it. However, this has yet to be backed up by the original artist, Gosho Aoyama, in the manga or (as would follow) the anime main series.

Hirai Tarō himself got the pen name "Edogawa Rampo" from a transliteration of "Edgar Allan Poe." Pronouncing Poe's name in a Japanese accent sounds like 'Edogawa Ranpo.'

Shocking Conan, the only thing he can manage to say is: "Yeah..."

* After class is over, the Detective Boys try to catch up with Ai in the hallway, wanting to ask her to walk home with them. Ai ignores all of Ayumi's attempts to talk to her until she inquires about her address, to which she replies: "22 Beika Block, Second Street." Conan regards the address as familiar and remarks to himself that her house can't be too far away from where his is. Ai then looks over her shoulder and smirks at him, again shocking Conan and causing a small blush to appear right above his nose. Genta notices and asks him if he "likes that stuck-up woman". Which Conan quickly denies.

* When Ayumi and Mitsuhiko are telling Ai about the Detective Boys, she asks, "Edogawa-kun is in it too?". Shortly after, the Detective Boys come across a case, where a fellow classmate's older brother has been missing and wants to find him.

* After solving said case, and Ai fires a gun through a window, causing her to get a scolding from Megure-keibu, and starts fake-crying (impressively well) to get out of it. Conan walks Ai back home to her house, while she is still crying. When Conan drops her off nearby her home, Ai immediately stops crying and then starts talking about a drug called "APTX 4869". Conan is confused, as Ai continues to ramble about the drug, how he took it, and how she did too. It is apparent that Ai isn't just your average little girl. It is not until Ai tells Conan that she's occupied the Professor's house and that he's "not in this world anymore", that Conan begins to freak out. He tries to call the Professor but does not get an answer, while Ai smirks evilly in the background (she's got the upper hand, at the moment). Conan then leaves Ai behind and sprints to the Professor's house, hoping to find him safe.

* Later on, Conan, Ai and the Professor come across another case. One involving the locked-room-murder of a University Professor. After Conan solves the case, the Professor and Conan decide to head back home. When Conan gestures for Ai to come along, we see a tear roll down her face as she asks why he didn't help her sister. To answer a confused Conan's face, Ai explains (still in tears) that Hirota Misami was a fake name her sister took from the now-deceased University Professor, and Conan realizes that the same girl (from the previous episode) who died during the one-billion-yen robbery case. Ai continues to shout at a stunned Conan, with all his deducing skills, he should have been able to see right through her sister's case. Ai breaks down and falls on her knees in front of Conan and clutches his shirt and continues to cry into it. The unfeeling boy, unlike a normal sympathetic human being, denies the very-teary Ai Haibara clutching onto him like she was his only life line (in a way, he was) the hug she very well deserved. But Conan silently thinks to himself: "This is probably the first true face she's ever showed me."

As she was smiling, Conan makes a comment saying that she should continue to smile like that because that makes her look like a child. She blushes from the comment until Conan says the wrong joke that she was 90 years old (she corrected him that she is 84 yrs old with scorn)

Conan is shocked and insists she'd probably only been looking at him to see how the "test subject" for APTX 4869 was doing. Despite this, Conan later tests Haibara, otherwise.

* Before Yukiko left the Detective Boys, Conan and Haibara she's quick to remind Conan to: "never leave her side," before she drives off. To which Conan irritably replies: "I know, I know."

Conan and Haibara are sleeping side-by-side. When he is unable to go to sleep because of Genta and Mitsuhiko's loud, audible questions, Haibara calmly reminds him: "it can't be helped; they're just kids, not like us." Conan then takes this opportunity to ask her a question, as the scene grows quiet. Conan solemnly closes his eyes as the fringe on his hair shifts downward his forehead he asks if he can ask her something. She does not reply verbally but turns her head around, as she had her back to him before, to listen. Conan then asks: "Is there something on my face?" with something of an "Oi-Oi" face. Haibara responds with a similar look, but appears to be confused.

In a scene, Haibara wants to know who Conan was talking to on his phone (she thinks it was the FBI). Conan says back, "It's not like a case (jiken) happened or something..." Ayumi eavesdrops and says surprisingly, "It's an affair (jiken)! An affair between Conan-kun and Ai-chan!?" Since jiken could also mean affair. They stared at Ayumi with bewildered and surprised faces.

Haibara admitted that she wanted to forget about everything and always be with Conan "forever, just like this", which shocked him. However, she immediately said she was joking to make Conan feel better.

During the case Ai found a footprint around the back of the shop. Conan then asks her to take a picture of it for him. She replies "Since when did I become your assistant?" he then said "Not assistant, Partner."

== Trivia ==

* Conan is always there to support Haibara when she mentions about her sister and how Haibara misses her. He always tells her that she is never alone because she has friends who surround her all the time.

* Ai Haibara always have to remind Conan that he can't act like Shinichi in front of others or it would raise suspicion (usually during a murder case).

* Though Haibara makes occasional remarks that she likes Conan, it is uncertain if she does truly like Conan. Some fans say she does, but doesn't want to reveal her feelings since Conan (Shinichi) likes Ran.

* Apparently Haibara seems not caring Conan but silently she's worry for him sometimes for getting to danger.
