Fox9aj7: /* OAVs */

This is a list of criminal cases which Kogoro Mouri has solved with little to (rarely) no direct intervention or assistance from Conan, fulfilling his role not as a proxy or stand-in but as an active and capable investigator.

Manga/Anime TV episodes
Volume 9, File 084-086: Kogoro's Class Reunion
(TV Title: 27-28, Kogoro's Class Reunion Murder Case, Parts 1 and 2)

With Conan drawing his attention to the facts that the victim was wearing an overly large yukata and that the estimated time of death was faked by accelerated rigor mortis through physical exertion just prior to her death, Kogoro is able to expose the culprit by himself.

Volume 17, Files 163-165: Scuba Diving Case
(TV Title: 114-115, Scuba Diving Murder Case, Parts 1 and 2)

While he is once more used by Conan as a front to solve the murder attempt case at hand, Kogoro is able to figure out by himself that his wife Eri has actually lost her wedding band (instead of just taking it off, as she claimed) and recover it for her.

Volume 37, Files 374-376: Kogoro's Choice
(TV Title: 305-306, The Unseen Suspect, Parts 1 and 2)

Upon thoroughly checking the crime scene, Kogoro immediately deduces who the actual murderer is, requiring only slight directions from Conan to counter the claims of the suspect's daughter, who tries to protect her father, regarding important clues about the murder weapon.

Volume 51, Files 525-527: Cat Sitting Case
(TV Title: 445, Secret of the Russian Blue)

By surreptitiously leaving cat treats in strategic places for Goro to lead Kogoro to important clues, Conan allows Kogoro to gradually able to piece the clues together by himself and unravel the true meaning of the message.

Volume 62, Files 643-645: Judo Champion Case
(TV Title: 528, Might Over Mystery, Parts 1 and 2)

Kogoro deduces on his own that the call from the murderer's husband was actually just a recording to fake her alibi, and has on his own part faked a recording of a Mahjong session to help his wife stumble upon that clue.

Volume 68, File 709-711: Eri's Birthday Murder Case
(TV Title: 589-590, The Worst Birthday, Parts 1 and 2)

Conan initiates a little accident with a serving wagon and some sauce, making Kogoro finally realize that the culprit used model cars to move the heavy bed in order to hide and later re-reveal the corpse of his victim.

TV only episodes
Episode 53: The Mystery Weapon Murder Case
After Conan has cracked the case and drawn Kogoro's attention to the way the victim was murdered, Kogoro works out the details of the crime quite well by himself.

Episode 150-151: The Truth Behind the Car Explosion Case, Parts 1 and 2
After Conan has roused his suspicions, Kogoro works out the identity of the culprit and the details of the crime, which included a murder plot against the perpetrator turned against its conceivers, out on his own, with Conan adding only one - but highly important - detail.

Episode 260: The Shaking Restaurant
While he did not solve the actual murder, Kogoro was able to deduce the trick for the original murder plot.

Episode 540-541: The Day Kogoro Mouri Ceased Being a Detective, Parts 1 and 2
In short order and independently from Conan, Kogoro realizes that he has become the victim of a carefully arranged deception, with the culprit having disguised himself as his prospective victim to gain an alibi. Conan refrains from interfering directly, limiting himself to drawing clues to a piece of vital evidence.

OVAs
OVA 05: The Target is Kogoro!! The Detective Boys' Secret Report
While Kogoro's intellectual and deductive skills are initially not in hard demand here, he shows true professionalism when his observation turns into a kidnapping and blackmail case, with some support from the Detective Boys.

Movies
Movie 09: Strategy Above the Depths
Because of one of the culprits' striking similarity with his wife Eri, Kogoro works all the harder to prove her innocence, only to discover her true guilt in the matter. He is only temporarily stumped off when he fails to produce a crucial piece of evidence at the time of his first revelation attempt. This is also the first case which he solves without direct promptings from Conan.

Movie 13: The Raven Chaser
By chance, Kogoro is able to deduce the location for the last planned murder from the star constellation of the Big Dipper and Polaris quite independently, if a bit belatedly, from Conan for the joint police commission.
The Detective Boys were informally founded when Ayumi Yoshida and Genta Kojima decided to investigate a mansion which was once a murder site and had been abandoned. Conan and his classmate Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya were drafted into accompanying the two, and the foursome entered the house. In the course of this adventure, Conan found out that the house was still inhabited by the mother and son of the murder victim; the son had killed his father in a fit of rage over his abusive behavior, and his mother had subsequently locked her own son in a dungeon beneath the house to wait until the deed's time-bar had passed. After exposing the two, they were arrested and the case was resolved.

In time, the four kept stumbling into more and more criminal cases, which were resolved thanks to Conan's deductive skills and initiative. Particularly after the case involving a sizable cache of stolen Italian gold coins, Ayumi, Genta and Mitsuhiko developed a taste for detective work and impulsively decided to become investigators themselves, mostly for fame and glory. After advertising their services in school, they have become actively involved in many criminal cases provided by their schoolmates, though more often than not they keep accidentally coming upon such during their free-time activities. Some time later, their new classmate (and former Black Organization member) Ai Haibara was drafted into the group. Two adults also joined this group informally, namely Professor Hiroshi Agasa, who provides the group with special gadgets to aid them in their adventures, and their classteacher Sumiko Kobayashi, a mystery novel enthusiast who proclaimed herself their manager.

In most cases, the Detective Boys act more like aides to Conan, who is the group's (mostly undisputed) leader due to his intelligence, extensive criminal knowledge and experience. In this role they function mostly as additional pairs of eyes who provide Conan with trivial-seeming but important clues, and display little investigative brilliance or determination of their own. However, in some cases - especially where Conan is not present or out of commission - the other members, particularly Ai and Mitsuhiko, have demonstrated that the Detective Boys have the potential of becoming skilled investigators in their own right. Famous cases of such include:

Manga:
*Chapter 251-253: Dangerous Cave Case
*Chapter 712-715: Kaitou Kid and the Kirin's Horn

Anime:
*Episode 225: The Secret of the High Sales (TV Original)
*Episode 303: The Victim Who Came Back (TV Original)
*Movie 13: The Raven Chaser (Movie)

Note: Caution must be advised for OVAs, Movies and TV Originals, as these are essentially non-canonical with the Manga series and therefore not 100% diagnostically conclusive.
Masumi Sera is a self-proclaimed high school detective and practitioner of the martial art Jeet Kune Do. After making an mostly correct deduction during a murder case, she transfers to Ran's high school class. She seems to know that Conan is a detective.

Background
Sera is a high school detective and skilled at Jeet Kune Do, a type of martial arts. She can fight at either the same or better level as Ran. She transfers to Ran and Sonoko's class at Teitan High. Since three years ago, she'd been living in America with her parents. She claims she'd rather live in Japan where she was born and raised, so she came to Tokyo and is currently living in a hotel.

Appearance
At first, she wears a fedora and a dark jacket which gives her an androgynous appearance. When she transfers to Teitan High, she gets rid of her fedora and wears appropriate female clothing. Her hair is dark, wavy, and short; it doesn't even touch her shoulders. Addition to that, Sera has small breasts complimented by Sonoko.

Personality
Sera has a friendly and quirky personality. She fails to correct Sonoko's impression that she is a man and even makes it worse by declaring that Ran is "his type". She seems to be prone to dramatics like most detectives are, but perhaps to a lesser degree than Shinichi or Hattori as she bluntly says who the criminal is without preamble. Although she has crime scene experience, Sera seems to be less skilled as a detective than Conan, apparently missing a critical clue that was necessary to understand how the murderer's setup worked (although it is down to interpretation whether she made this mistake on purpose or not). Her catchphrase may be "case closed".

Plot overview
Sera's Introduction (Manga 768-770)
Sera first met Sonoko, Ran, and Conan on a bus after she was mistaken for a groper. After Sonoko declared Sera was the groper, Sera and Ran got into a fight, with Sera's Jeet Kune Do holding even against Ran's karate. Conan and Sera cleared up the misunderstanding by pointing out the real groper. Sonoko then mistook Sera for a boy, an impression which wasn't helped by Sera declaring that Ran was "his type". Sera and Ran both discovered they were heading to the same hotel, about which Conan is less than pleased.

Sera finds out the hotel she is staying at doesn't have a room available and complains at the front desk. A man then falls into the parking lot and dies. Conan runs to the source of screaming while Sera told the guard to watch the elevators before running to the roof. She immediately declares the crime to be a murder, giving her reasoning. She then reveals her name, Sera, that she is a detective, and knows Conan is a detective as well.

Megure is not pleased to have another High School Detective underfoot but lets Sera and Conan investigate regardless. After listening to the suspect testimony, police observations, and examining the crime scene, Sera announces that she has solved the case.

However, Sera's deduction leaves out a critical detail; Conan is therefore forced to use Shinichi's phone to call his own, give Inspector Megure Conan's phone, and speak through Shinichi's as Shinichi using the voice-changer bow tie. Shinichi figures out the detail that had Sera stumped, although a look she gives Conan as he runs off suggests her omission was possibly intentional, and once during the phone conversation she tries to trick Shinichi into admitting that he is physically present at the crime scene instead of being explained the details by Conan and Megure.

The other day, Sera transfers to Teitan high school, surprising both Ran and Sonoko. She was rather popular at school surrounded by students asking her questions about herself.

Kogoro Detective Agency Hostage Crisis (Manga 771)
She is shown as being very popular. When she was asked where she was from, she replied that she had been staying in America with her parents since three years ago. She was then compared to Kudou Shinichi. At this remark, she goes 'hmm...'. She sneaks behind Sonoko and Ran after school and says she wanted to visit Ran's apartment after knowing Conan currently lives there. Unfortunately, Conan and the rest of detective boys were staying at Agasa's house, having things ready for camping the following day. When the bomber pulls out his gun, Sera speaks to Ran telling her to go for the gun. Sera's speed surpassed the Bomber's vision and she managed to leg sweep the bomber onto the floor. After revealing the bombs on his chest,Ran's cellphone rings. It turns out to be Conan calling. Sera takes the phone and says hello to Conan (who is shocked that Sera is with Ran), and faked turning off the phone so Conan can hear the conversation without seeming suspicious to the bomber.

Speculation
Sera knew Conan and Ran's identities before they introduced themselves. Although she claimed to know Ran from Karate tournaments, she additionally recognized Conan as a detective. This may indicate Sera has done research or follows stories about Conan's achievements or that she has had direct or indirect contact with Conan and Ran. However, Ran and Conan didn't recognize Sera. Sera might be one of Ran's martial arts rivals, although Ran, did not recognize her. In file 771, it is revealed that she also knows Professor Agasa, although she calls him "Professor whatshisname".

Shuichi Akai's younger sister
Sera might be the younger sister of Shuichi Akai. Sera has bags under her eyes identical to Shuichi Akai's. Also,
Sera Masumi's name is also incredibly similar to Mobile Suit Gundam character Sayla Mass (セイラ・マス, Seira Masu). Akai's name is derived from Sayla Mass's older brother's name, Char Anzable.
Also, Conan said he has a feeling he had met her before.
Sera lived in Japan until three years ago when her family moved to America. This matches with the time when Akai was infiltrating the Organization. The family's move to America could be the FBI's attempt to protect them should something go wrong with Akai's mission.

*The kanji for Sera's last name mean 'good world.' The kanji for her first name, Masumi, mean 'true' and either 'pure' or 'net.'
Saguru Hakuba is a character in the manga Magic Kaito, who has made multiple appearances in the manga and anime franchise Detective Conan. Hakuba is another teenage detective, just like Shinichi Kudo and Heiji Hattori. However, he does a lot of his work in England, as well as Japan, and has handled more cases than even Shinichi and Heiji. His main goal is to capture the Kaitou Kid.

Appearance and Skills
Hakuba Saguru has brown-blonde hair; his eye color is usually blue in the manga, but brown in the anime. According to Hakuba's own introduction to Aoko, Hakuba is 180 cm tall (5'11"), weighs 65 kg (143 lbs), was born on August 29th under the Virgo zodiac, and is blood type 'A'.

In the Twilight Mansion case, he showed himself to be skilled at billiards, and to have at least basic knowledge of hawking.

He also seems to have an eidetic memory, just as Shinichi, Heiji and Kaito have proven themselves to have, and is capable of remembering long strings of data, particularly (in Saguru's case) precise times down to the millisecond.

Personality
How come you did that?
As a detective, Hakuba takes great interest in learning culprit's motives, asking "How come you did that?" Hakuba also pays a great deal of attention to time, carrying a pocket watch that only loses 0.001 seconds per year. Hakuba even notes during the Adam's Smile painting heist that Kaitou Kid is a minute and 13.02 seconds late.During his first appearances in Magic Kaito, Hakuba is seen often wearing an Inverness cape and a deerstalker, much like the stereotypical portrait of Sherlock Holmes. In later appearances he has given up this look opting for a suit instead.

His speech is usually formal and polite, like his attire; for example, he uses the more humble pronoun 'boku' to refer to himself during the Detective Koushien case, while Heiji uses 'ore,' which is a cockier and less polite way of referring to oneself. However, Hakuba displays a distinct sense of arrogance himself, particularly during his earlier appearances. He displays an arrogant assurance in his ability to capture the Kaitou Kid, and conveys a superior attitude towards Inspector Nakamori's men in volume 3 of Magic Kaito. In the Detective Koushien case in Detective Conan he frequently mocked Heiji, calling him rash and hotheaded.

Hakuba also appears to be something of a flirt. He kissed Aoko's hand and tried to sweet-talk her into going on a date with him, And during the Detective Koushien he was particularly attentive to the female detective present, even promising that he would "solve the case for her." However, it's possible that in both of those cases his actions were at least partly intended to irritate Kaito and Heiji, respectively.

Family
Hakuba's father is the Metropolitan Chief of Police in Japan. His mother is British. His family also apparently runs a research laboratory in Japan. His father appeared only once in Magic Kaito, when he asked Inspector Nakamori to look after Saguru.

In subsequent appearances in both manga series, Saguru's sole caretaker seems to be a housekeeper whom he refers to as 'baaya' or 'governess' in the English translation.

Relationship analysis
* Saguru Hakuba and Kaito Kuroba

The relationship between Hakuba and Kaito is a rather tense one; Hakuba convinced himself early on that Kaito was indeed Kid, and during the first few volumes he's constantly throwing out offhand comments that show his suspicion. However, later on in the Manga, we have a small scene where Hakuba calls Kaito from Paris in order to give him some information on 'Chat Noir', a dangerous, fellow gem thief trying to outshine Kid. Though Kaito continues to vehemently deny being Kid, Hakuba gives him the information anyways, ending the conversation with, "Do your best at least. I don't want to see you lose to anyone before I capture you myself". Whether that was his actual motive, or if he was merely concerned for Kaito's well being, or a mix of both, is unknown.

* Saguru Hakuba and Aoko Nakamori

Prior to the heist in Volume 3, Chapter 3, Hakuba seems to flirt with Aoko after Kaito turns down Aoko's offer to go to the Prince Prince concert. Hakuba and Kaito then make a bet that if Hakuba manages to catch Kid then Hakuba will go to the concert with Aoko, and if he fails to capture the thief, Kaito will go instead. When interviewed before the heist, Hakuba notes "Tonight's battle has a special meaning to me". Although initially excited to have Hakuba want to go to the concert with her, Aoko during the actual heist seems to want Hakuba to fail so that she can go to the concert with Kaito instead. This relationship has not been touched upon much since then because of Hakuba's limited appearances in Magic Kaito and Detective Conan.

Plot overview
Main Article: Saguru Hakuba Appearances

In Magic Kaito
Prior to arriving in Japan sometime around February 23, 1990, Hakuba spent time as a detective in England and attended London Bridge School. According to Hakuba's father, Saguru is most interested in meeting the infamous Kaitou Kid and is taken to the Adam's Smile painting heist. Hakuba fails to capture Kid but begins collecting clues as to Kid's true identity.

On February 24, 1990 (much to Kaito's dismay) Hakuba transfers into Ekoda High School Class 2-B and continues his mission to unmask Kid. He is now the classmate of Kaito Kuroba, Aoko Nakamori, Akako Koizumi, and Keiko Momoi.

Although Magic Kaito is no longer frequently continued, Hakuba has made several appearances in the cases that have come out alongside Detective Conan. He telephoned Kaito from Paris to give him information on the thief known as Chat Noir, and also appeared in the Dark Knight arc, where he arrived too late to stop Kid's theft but correctly deduced his methods and kept up with Kaito in uncovering the identity of the mysterious 'Nightmare.'

In Detective Conan
Saguru's first appearance in Detective Conan was in the Twilight Palace case, where he was one of six detectives invited to investigate a murder that had been committed 40 years ago in an old mansion. During the case it is revealed Hakuba has a pet hawk named Watson whom he got in England.

His second, and only other canonical appearance, was in the Detective Koushien case. Although he initially believed that he was to represent the 'east' in a contest between four high school detectives, in fact the competition had been arranged by a woman seeking a detective 'with a strange accent' who had incorrectly accused her friend of committing a murder. Thinking that Hakuba's Japanese might be accented due to his time in Britain, she invited him, as well as Heiji Hattori, who is well known for his strong Kansai accent.

During the Detective Koushien, it was stated that Hakuba had returned to England sometime before the case, and had returned to Japan specifically to compete in the koushien, thus explaining his absence from the Kaitou Kid heists in Detective Conan.

Although not actually present, Hakuba was mentioned in Episode 219: The Gathering of the Detectives! Kudo Shinichi vs. Kaitou Kid (2 Hour Special). During the Kid case, set some time before Shinichi was shrunk, Kaito thinks to himself that the heist will be much easier without Hakuba around, as he has apparently returned to England. Kid was therefore not expecting a challenge, so when the officers trick him into revealing himself and successfully locate him in the ventilation shafts, Kid wonders aloud who, if not Hakuba, could be helping the police.

Hakuba also made a cameo of sorts in the tenth Detective Conan movie, The Private Eyes' Requiem. Claiming that someone dear to him had been captured by the theme park, he assisted Conan and Heiji in their investigations that day but later disappeared after they were separated by attackers. It is later revealed that 'Hakuba' was actually the Kaitou Kid in disguise.

Trivia
*The name 'Saguru' means 'to search' in Japanese. His last name, Hakuba, means 'white horse.'
*Saguru, along with Shinichi, Heiji and Kaito, are sometimes referred to as 'The Four Geniuses' or 'The Gosho Boys' by fans. If Ai/Shiho is included, they are referred to as 'The Five Geniuses.'
*Saguru's eyes are blue in his manga appearances, but brown in the anime.
*In the tenth Detective Conan movie it was stated that Hakuba had been studying Criminal Science in London.
*Saguru wasn't given an English name in Case Closed. In Volume 30, the Twilight Mansion case and his only translated American appearance to date, he was simply referred to by his original name, like the other one-shot detectives in the case.
*In Magic Kaito, Saguru acquires a strand of the Kid's hair and runs a genetic scan on it, determining that the Kid is a fifteen-to-seventeen year old male with a higher-than-average IQ. He then runs this information against a database of Tokyo teenagers and comes up with a list of possible Kaitou Kids, at the top of which was Kaito Kuroba's name. However, it's interesting to wonder whether Shinichi Kudo, another sixteen-year-old Tokyo resident with a similar build and above-average intelligence, made Saguru's list.

Irish is a Black Organization member who appears as the main antagonist and eponymous Raven Chaser in Movie 13. He was killed by Chianti.

Background
Not much is known about Irish, except that he had a lot of respect for Pisco. Pisco was an elderly member of the Black Organization who was killed by Gin. Ever since, Irish has had a strong grudge against Gin. It is not known if Irish ever killed anyone, but it is assumed that he had in the past.

Personality
Irish isn't a very high ranking member, though he is quite smart. It is very apparent that Irish lacks a high rank in the organization when Gin cold-heartedly orders Chianti to shoot him. Irish had managed to find out Conan was actually Shinichi relatively quickly. He was also a master of disguise. He disguised as Kiyonaga Matsumoto as he investigated the true identity of Conan.

Trivia
He was one of the few Black Organization characters to ever be depicted with a silhouette at some point (see "The Criminal").
