Shukichi Haneda was presumably born as Shukichi Akai until some incident, perhaps the death of his father, caused Shukichi and [[Masumi|Masumi Sera]] to switch to using "Sera" as a family name. The Akai family apparently lived a rather wealthy life.<ref>[[Volume 80|Volume 80, File 847, page 3: "Until I Collect All Seven"]]</ref> He might have been born in England. When the family moved to Japan, Shukichi's older brother Shuichi left them to study in America. After that his younger sister Masumi was born. Seven years after moving to Japan, he and his family were briefly reunited with Shuichi, who plans to join the FBI to investigate the death of their father. When Shukichi graduated from high school he began using the family name Haneda from Koji Haneda, a shogi player he admire. It is not clear what their relationship was. At some point he started his career as a professional shogi player.

Shukichi's main objective is to prove himself worthy as Yumi's boyfriend by secretly winning all seven shogi titles, despite having technically been dumped by her. == Personality ==
Shukichi has a very cheerful personality, which Yumi (to her annoyance) perceived as immature. In front of Yumi and other characters, he rarely suppresses his emotions, which can range from overly joyful when meeting his ex-girlfriend, to hilariously disapproving when the latter announces that their relationship was over. Despite this, Shukichi does show a calmer and more serious side during some situations, most notably when he is making his deductions or when he appears in front of the media.

On the other hand, Shukichi is quite confident and proud of his excellent memory, as seen when he proclaims himself the best memorizer in the world.<ref name="memory">[[Volume 80|Volume 80, File 847, page 14: "Until I Collect All Seven"]]</ref> From his goal of achieving all seven shogi titles to win Yumi's admiration, he shows himself as a person with great patience and determination. The only thing which can disturb him is his intense feelings for Yumi; his belief in her love for him affects his performance at shogi immensely, making her his effective muse.

He is also a strong detective, more skilled than Masumi. She often consulted him on cases over the phone, double-checking her deductions.

Shukichi Haneda is perhaps the most characterized by his hair, which sticks up in the back like a bed head. He is often shown wearing glasses, usually except when he is playing shogi or is being interviewed as a professional shogi player.

Shukichi was first mentioned by Yumi to the Detective Boys when the children were looking for a missing schoolgirl. She described him as someone with a good-looking face but childish personality. She also mentioned having "dumped him in a bad way", so she was buying a facemask so he wouldn't recognize her, since she was going to a place not far from where he lived.<ref>[[Volume 49|Volume 49, File 506, page 11: "The Secret Path to School"]]</ref>

After Sera took down the kidnapper with her motorcycle she either made or received a call from an unknown person. Given her pattern of contacting her brother regarding cases, she may have called him concerning this one. Another possibility is Mary.

Yumi recalls her moment with Shukichi before they broke up. When she proposed that they should end their relationship as she would become a police officer, Shukichi handed her an envelope and told her not to open until he "collect all seven", referring to the shogi titles. However, he hasn't contacted her ever since then, so she officially broke up with him.

When a murder takes place at his neighboring apartment, Shukichi becomes one of the prime suspects as he knows the code to acquire the spare key. That is when he finally meets his ex-girlfriend again after all those years. He cheerfully introduces to everyone about their relationship, only to be denied by Yumi.

As the investigation progresses, Shukichi perceives the true nature of the victim's suicide note, calling it "a well prepared move", which turns out to be an important clue. Later, when asked about his own alibi, Shukichi refuses to answer, much to Yumi's annoyance. However, he mentally tells her not to be worried, while confidently looking at Conan, who's already figured out the truth about the case.

Conan, with Shukichi's helps, points out that the culprit is the victim's husband. Shukichi explains that the suicide note was actually written four years ago, on an airplane that almost crashed; the culprit used it to fake her death as a suicide. He also reveals that he has suspected the husband since he saw the note, and his theory was confirmed when he overheard his conversation with his son.

At the end of the case, it is revealed that Shukichi is in fact the famous shogi player called "Taiko Meijin", and was having a match when the crime occured. He kept quiet about it so Yumi couldn't find out about his occupation. It's also revealed that the reason he's so determined in winning all seven shogi titles is because when the two were still dating, Yumi used to express her admiration for a sumo champion who had won six tournaments in a row.

Sera had called Shukichi regarding the "adultery case" she was about to investigate and was overheard by Eri. After the murder was discovered, Sera relayed her brother the facts of the case and her deduction by phone call. He told Sera her deduction was unreliable.

Conan asks Sera who she called during the last case, and she tells Conan about the existence of her second older brother who is very smart. Confronted with another murder case, Sera texts Shukichi about the situation and her logic. Sera also informs her brother than Conan seems to have figured out the case, but she isn't sure of her answer since her confidence has been shaken as of late. Her brother texts Sera asking who she keeps talking about. Sera sends him a picture of Conan and Shukichi replies that "it is no problem" if it is Conan doing the deducing, after all Shukichi had a good experience with Conan's deductions in [[The Ex-Boyfriend Living Next to a Crime Scene]].

Masumi is very surprised and wonders how her brother knows Conan. Her suspicion makes sense because she knows that Conan didn't exist prior to Shinichi shrinking.<ref name=861p4>Manga Volume 81, File 11 (861), pg 4: "Just like Magic"</ref> The brother later sends another text to Masumi which most likely said something about how he met Conan during a case before. This makes Masumi react "Ah, I see. So ''that's'' how it is."<ref name=861p15-16>Manga Volume 81, File 11 (861), pg 15-16: "Just like Magic"</ref> At the end of the unseen message is a PS asking if she has "already met the wizard." Sera looks over at Conan and thinks "You could say so..." while sending a reply.

Shukichi won important matches to help him win his 4th, 5th and 6th titles. Before he begins his title match to become only the 2nd Nanakan-ō shogi player with all 7 titles) in history, he receives a letter. He opens the letter only to find out that Yumi was kidnapped and is trapped in a well. The letter contains clues pertaining to the whereabouts of Yumi. He arrives at the location but cannot find the well. Upon the arrival, he bumps into Conan and the Detective Boys who immediately ask the real purpose of Shukichi. The match is postponed as Shukichi attempts to win both the battle of shogi and love.

Shukichi was holding a Shogi practice session with younger Shogi players. However, Yumi suspects that he was having an affair, which causes her to bring Conan along to tail him. Unfortunately, one of the Shogi group members got killed while arriving at the apartment. Shukichi realizes that the culprit is one of the members before the police arrive. He goes to the culprit's place to tell him to turn himself in but got kidnapped afterwards.
Eventually, he is saved by a double effort of Conan and his brother Shuichi. Shukichi reveals to his brother that he wanted to introduce Yumi to his [[Mary|mother]], but is unable to contact her. After Shukichi revealed to his brother that he didn't tell their mother that he is still alive yet, Shuichi reassures that he'll meet her eventually, once the mist of the [[Black Organisation]] that covers the truth, has been cleared up.

* Shukichi was in the right age range for the middle brother. The middle brother's former high school classmates are currently 28 and 29 years old, suggesting that the middle brother is similarly aged.
* Shukichi is very intelligent as the middle brother was described. When Conan and Shukichi encountered each other during a case, Shukichi noted that Conan is an excellent detective. Later Shukichi asked Masumi about the detective she was always talking talking about, not realizing he had already met this person before. Masumi shows her brother Conan's picture thinking he will be surprised. Shukichi replies back that "if it's him, then there's no problem"; he had met Conan previously after all.
* Shukichi is right handed and has pale skin, matching the phone-holding hand of the middle brother.
* Both [[Shuichi Akai]] and [[Mary]] took special interest in the outcome of Shukichi's Shogi matches. Masumi, who had earlier stated that she had no idea where the middle brother is or what he is up to did not recognize Shukichi in his match.

Shukichi Haneda and [[Yumi Miyamoto]] first met when the latter was still in college, and had begun dating since then until Yumi eventually broke up with him because she thought he was immature. Shukichi is completely oblivious to Yumi breaking up with him and he still thinks of her as his girlfriend as if nothing has happened. Yumi, on the other hand, refers to him as an ex and doesn't show much interest in his personal life. Despite this, it appears she still has some feelings for him.

Their relationship began to relapse after Shukichi was caught up in a murder case in his apartment complex. Despite Yumi acting standoffish most of the time, they start using pet names for each other once again. They even exchanged a kiss before Shukichi continued his shogi match to win the seventh title. By the time Yumi figured out Shukichi's real identity, Shukichi was regularly meeting with her. All of this time, Yumi still insisted on calling him an ex.

Yumi was unaware of Shukichi being a famous shogi player for a long time, mostly due to her lack of interest in investigating, and an apparent personal disinterest in shogi (she is more of a Mahjong type). She assumed Shukichi was a "meijin" at some minor game like shiratori or fishing. She eventually saw Shukichi on television and figured it out. After realizing that meijins can make 100,000,000 yen in salary, she desperately tries to reclaim the letter he left for her, which her ornery building manager had seized.

After Shukichi lost the decisive match against [[Chikara Katsumata]],Yumi rips the letter on Shukichi's favour as it became invalid due to his loss. Disappointed by his loss, Yumi encouraged Shukichi that she will wait for him to re-gather the seven Shoji titles once again and that she will listen to any one of his wishes. Shuichi Akai is a British American of Japanese descent, originally from England, and is a member of the American Federal Bureau of Investigation, on special assignment in Japan to capture [[Vermouth]]. His superior is [[James Black]] and his partner is [[Jodie Starling]].<ref>Manga Chapter 434: Rotten Apple 5</ref> He had infiltrated the Black Organization under the name Dai Moroboshi - and the codename "Rye" - as a mole<ref>Manga Chapter 599: Akai's Past</ref> and dated [[Akemi Miyano]], one of their low-ranking members, to feed information to the FBI. Shuichi, determined to investigate his missing father's "incident," convinced his mother to let him study in America. After he left Japan, his younger sister Masumi was born. Shuichi didn't get to meet her until he returned to Japan after seven years in the states, but Shukichi sent him pictures of her. After he had finished school, he joined the FBI.

== Personality ==
Shuichi is a tenacious but stoic agent. Even in personal matters, he remains cool, even detached, from anyone, but his redeeming value is a great sense of loyalty to anyone he knows. He is a skilled and relentless pursuer and detective, qualities which have labeled him the number one enemy of the [[Black Organization]] and earned him the nickname "[[Silver Bullet]]". He looks forward to opportunities to hunt the Black Organization down and get revenge for [[Akemi]]. While usually professional, he often acts independently of the FBI, and even his boss [[James Black]] has trouble getting ahold of him. Shuichi gets along well with Conan, who share many personality traits. Despite that he has American citizenship, he still considers England as his home country.

James Black describes Shuichi as an introverted person who doesn't easily get close to people, and further notes that Shuichi has become even more closed off since Akemi's death.<ref name=502p13>Manga Volume 49, File 2, page 13: "New Order"</ref> Shuichi doesn't often voice what he is thinking and has an unhealthy tendency to prioritize his missions above the emotional well-being of his friends, co-workers, family, and love interests.<ref>Shuichi's fake death, while preserving Kir and allowing her to pass confidential information to the FBI, has caused significant dysfunction within the FBI who believe him to be truly dead. Shuichi prefers to plan secretly, and will readily trick his friends and coworkers, even injuring them, if helps the success of his missions.<ref>FBI vs Org, Shuichi didn't tell the rest of the FBI he would cover Kogoro's agency. In Red vs Black, the return Kir plan and the fake death plan were both kept secret from the FBI. He ordered Camel to remove by force if necessary anyone who interfered which resulted in Jodie being knocked out. He later told Kir to hit Camel for real to make her escape look authentic.</ref> Shuichi is often forgiven for these transgressions because his judgment is usually sound and his plans work out well.<ref>In FBI vs Org, Shuichi was forgiven for covering Kogoro without telling his boss and for making the decision on his own to let the Black Organization leave without much resistance because he thought it might lead to a dangerous firefight downtown. Even though he means well, Shuichi is notably clumsy at trying to comfort and connect with others. He is especially dense at recognizing the motives behind the feelings of others and thus how to modify his own behavior to improve relations. As [[Subaru Okiya]], his technique to approach [[Ai Haibara]] leaves her terrified of him, and repeated contact only intensifies her loathing. Ten years ago, he was also cold to young Masumi on their first meeting, brushing Masumi's silly antics aside without realizing that she simply wanted him to smile and treat her kindly, though he most likely was simply in a bad mood, since he just had an intense argument with his mother, in which they traded physical blows, because of his plan to join the FBI after his studies to pursue the case of his father and because he had lied to her about that. Later that day, during the investigation of a case, Shuichi gives both Shinichi and Ran a task to help with the investigation, so Masumi approaches Shuichi shyly and asks for a task as well. Now Shuichi responds kindly and gives her a task that makes her feel important. 

Despite his social awkwardness, Shuichi is not apathetic. He gives Jodie some hope by leaving her a message in his own handwriting, and leaves her a very roundabout hint about his identity after knocking her down even though he cannot reveal the truth to her yet. Eventually he also realized that Masumi was looking up to him, so he began to send her videos of him doing Jeet Kune Do.

== Appearance ==
Shuichi is a tall man of Japanese descent with short wavy hair. His trademark features, by which people close to him have identified him are his eyes which have permanent bags underneath them that make him appear sleep deprived. Other characters often describe him as evil eyed or having a sharp gaze. His eyes are blue in the manga (like every other character) and green in the anime. He and [[Masumi Sera]] presumably more closely resemble their mother then their father.
The second trademark feature is his knit cap, which he is always shown wearing. When he was younger he had a grey fedora which Masumi now wears herself. Up to one year ago, he had very long waist length hair, which he cut after the death of Akemi Miyano "to freshen up." Shuichi is left-handed. Ten years before the present timeline, Shuuichi still had short hair, which means he grew it out sometime during the next five years.<ref>File 973</ref> He is a heavy smoker and his favorite drink is whiskey- he has recently taken to drinking bourbon rather than scotch.

Shuichi is capable of thinking on par with Conan. He once set up a sniper ambush at a nearby building, knowing that the Black Organization will come and try to kill Kogoro. He also mentioned that he knew that "making them think the FBI set up the transmitter was the priority."<ref>Anime Episode 425: Black Impact! The Moment the Black Organization Reaches Out</ref> In the Paper Airplane Case, Shuichi (disguised as Subaru) matched Conan's deduction abilities, including the use of Morse code and origami. During Yusaku Kudo's Cold Case, Shuichi figured out the key point of Sanada coins, solving the case before Conan and even providing him the hint of "Kumogakure Saizou" to lead him to the same conclusion. During the Delivery Service case, Shuichi was able to figure out Conan's situation in the delivery truck with a mere address change on the parcel. He was able to deduce along with Yusaku Kudo that the hints of ASACA and MASCARA lead to the name of the Boss of the Black Organization, Karasuma Renya.

Shuichi, is the most capable sniper shown so far, to the point of shooting a small piece of gum out of Gin's hand from about 700 yards away, which is a lot more than the range of Black Organization's professional snipers [[Chianti]] and [[Korn]]. Shuichi is good at handling shotguns as well; he accurately shot Vermouth from the hip faster than she could aim at him with her subcompact pistol.
He is a sharpshooter with a handgun as well, capable of busting a moving car's tire from a speeding car with just a single shot.<ref>Manga Volume 85 File 4 Page 5</ref>

Shuichi uses Calvados' SPAS-12 shotgun to bring down Vermouth, an Arctic Warfare Magnum sniper rifle to shoot Gin, and [[Rikumichi Kusuda]]'s Glock pistol to disable Rei's subordinates.

Akai is unusual in that he is "eye-bidextrous" while shooting. Shuichi Akai and Akemi Miyano were lovers while he was infiltrating the [[Black Organization]]. Shuichi's original mission was to date Akemi Miyano in order to meet Shiho Miyano. Shuichi used Shiho's influence to gain rank in the Organization, intending to become trusted enough to meet with high level agents so the FBI could capture one for questioning. As [[James Black]] later recalls, although Shuichi's relationship with Akemi was merely a stepping stone, Shuichi actually fell in love with Akemi, and considered her his real girlfriend. Because of this he broke up with [[Jodie Starling]].

Sometime later, Akemi develops the suspicion that Shuichi really wasn't who he claimed to be. After Shuichi's expulsion, he confirms that he is an FBI agent to her. To Shuichi's surprise, Akemi doesn't seemed surprised by this, so Shuichi asks her why she never said anything about her suspicions that she was being used by him before, and Akemi hints it is because she loves him. Initially, the Organization couldn't do anything about Akemi because they needed the loyalty of her sister, but two years later they decided that the risk of her contact with Shuichi was too much. They decided to create a situation where they could eliminate her by having her do a bank heist she was supposed to fail. Sometime near the day of the heist, Akemi sent Shuichi a long text message, asking him if he wants to be her real boyfriend when she is finally free from the Organization. After the heist, Akemi is killed by [[Gin]], and it is unknown how Shuichi responded if at all. Shuichi treasures her final text message, and keeps it in his phone many months after Akemi's death. The message also contains a P.S. which has not been revealed yet.

How Akemi and Shuichi met in the manga is unknown, but in the anime, Shuichi Akai originally met Akemi by an intentional accident. She accidentally hit him with her car when he deliberately walked into the street in front of her in order to be hit by her.<ref>Episode 497</ref> Akemi was concerned, and helped take him to the hospital, watching over him until he was better. When he woke up, he felt no anger over what she did, and even asked for her name, to which a very flustered Akemi replied, while he told her his fake name: Dai Moroboshi. After this they began dating.

While Jodie and Shuichi's relationship had been viewed as mere colleagues, it is revealed later on in the series that Jodie and Shuichi had dated before about 5 years prior. [[James Black]] is the boss of the [[Federal Bureau of Investigation|FBI]] agents in Japan and therefore the boss of Shuichi. He was one of those who know that Shuichi was alive after Shuichi's fake death, but only because he saw the glue on Shuichi's fingers and would have otherwise also been kept in the dark. The two maintain close contact with each other up to present.

[[Andre Camel]] worked with Shuichi Akai before when he was an agent in the [[Black Organization]]. Camel was involved in the plan to capture Gin two years ago, but he gave away the plan of the FBI when he saw a member of the organization disguised as an old man. Because of this, Shuichi's identity became known to the Organization. However, Shuichi does not seem to bear a grudge against Camel but worked together well. Camel is willing to help Akai in any way he can to redeem for his mistake.

When Haibara first met Shuichi, she thought he was a member of the Black Organization. Shuichi seems to know of Haibara's identity. Shuichi and Conan get along well and are capable of thinking on par with one another. In the short time they have worked together, Shuichi has come to respect Conan's intellect and deductive skills and speaks to him professionally. After FBI had capture Kir, he asked who Conan was, hinting that he suspected that there was more to Conan that meets the eyes. He is also aware that [[Conan]] and [[Shinichi Kudo]] are really one and the same person <ref>Manga [[Volume 77]], File 813 p.16 and File 814 p.3 </ref>. There is further speculation amongst fans that Shuichi has figured out that Ai was formerly Sherry and (more than likely) learned about her research for the Black Organization and the two possible effects of [[APTX 4869]].

[[Masumi Sera]] is Shuichi's younger sister. Masumi wasn't born yet when Shuichi went to America to study, so they first got to meet each other, when Masumi was seven. It's indicated at Shuichi cares for his sister. While Masumi was growing up, Shuichi would send her training tapes of Jeet Kune Do that she could practice after. During the mystery train case, when Masumi was knocked out by Vermouth and hidden in her room, Shuichi (disguised as Subaru) carried her back to her own room. As he was about to leave he overheard her calling out 'Shuu-nii' in her sleep, which made him smile. And in the movie [[Dimensional Sniper]] he (as Subaru) was seen leaving the hospital, where Masumi was hospitalized after getting shot, hinting that he was visiting her. While she was unconscious, he left a bouquet in her room, which Ran and Sonoko find.

[[Shukichi Haneda]] is Shuichi's younger brother. He keeps track of Shukichi Haneda's shogi matches. During a reunion ten years ago Shukichi shows concern over his choice of path in life. When Yumi is accosted by drunkards, he disguised as Subaru incapacitates them and has them leave her alone.

Shuichi Akai and Gin are rivals and hate one another. It is implied that they didn't get along even before Shuichi was exposed as an undercover FBI agent. Shuichi refers to Gin as "Koibito", which ironically means 'lover.' Gin killed Shuichi's love Akemi, so Shuichi thinks of Gin as his archenemy.

==== Rei Furuya====
Since joining the Black Organization, [[Rei Furuya]] has always considered Shuichi Akai as a worthy rival, he want to compare his capacity with Shuichi and think he is the only one who could defeat Shuichi. Shuichi always show a respectful towards Rei, he admits Rei's capability and feels interest everytime he faces Rei, he also made Rei felt quite confused sometimes. Their relationship is becoming more bitter and dramatic when Rei misunderstood Shuichi killed his best friend - Scoth, but actually the one who indirectly caused Scotch to die was Rei himself. Shuichi chooses to keep a secret, continues to let Rei misunderstand him instead of letting Rei know that painful truth. Over time, Shuichi appears to help and proctect Rei in some cases, he gradually wants to compensate for the losses which Rei has experienced, he also reveals that he doesn't want to be Rei's enemy. For now, Rei is temporarily lowering his hatred to working well with Shuichi and Conan in destroying the Black Organization.

[[Vermouth]] hints that they worked on an existing project upon joining,<ref>“If you [Shiho] want to blame someone, blame your parents '''who took over''' this foolish research.” Episode 345</ref> which is probably part of the one Shiho implied was at least 50 years old.<ref>Manga [[Volume 19]], File 9 (189): "The Endangered Ball "; Episodes [[Episode 130|130]]-[[Episode 131|131]] "Kudo-kun? Elena is British and has long brown hair. In every instance so far she has been shown wearing glasses which cover her eyes. She has also been shown wearing a lab coat.

Since Elena has not appeared or interacted with other characters much on screen, much of her personality has been described by others. Elena seems to have been a very quiet person which has lead to people thinking she didn't understand much Japanese. However we know that she is fluent. Given the tapes she left behind, Elena seems to have loved her daughters. That said, Elena left her daughters at the mercy of the Black Organization even though she knew that she was going to "disappear" in advance.

== Skills ==
Due to her work on drug related projects for the [[Black Organization]] she would have to be skilled at biochemistry. She made significant advances on her research project working with her lab mates on creating a "dream drug" that they were calling "[[Silver Bullet]]". It is unknown how much progress was made, only that her daughter [[Shiho Miyano]] was able to make further advances on a project called "[[APTX 4869]]".

Despite her quiet nature and foreign appearance, Elena can speak Japanese fluently. This was called into question by one of the workers living at Atsushi's house. In the anime he later sees Elena talking with Akemi quietly.

Approximately 30 years ago Atsushi moved out of the house he inherited from his father to go do research. He left the home to a childhood friend of his to open a design company. A short time later he sent a wedding invitation to his friend. At a point 20 years ago Atsushi and his wife, Elena, and his daughter, Akemi, came back to the house with something very important to tell the friend and stayed overnight, however the friend who was living there was busy and away for a few days. The other members of the company remember Elena being very quiet. They thought it was because she didn't speak Japanese very well, but Akemi spoke it perfectly. Atsushi had been looking out the window frequently and a black car with grey windows was parked nearby quite often. The three of them left without leaving any message behind. Akemi returned at a much more recent point of time (approximately one week before dying) to use the bathroom and hid something in the water tank. Twice someone had broken into the house and broken the lock on the bathroom door, possibly to find the item and spy on the occupants. Haibara reveals that her mother's nickname in the organization was {{nihongo|"Hell Angel"|ヘルエンジェル|Heru Enjeru}} and she translates it into Japanese as {{nihongo|3="jigoku ni ochita tenshi"|2=地獄に落ちた天使|4=the angel that fell to hell}}. At the end of the main case, Conan reveals that the items that Akemi hid in the bathroom were cassette tapes sealed in a plastic bag. The four tapes are numbered in 5 intervals ending with 20. Conan says that the first two tapes were empty and began to listen to the 11-15 tape. He stops and hands the headphones to Haibara saying that its something he shouldn't hear. The tape begins with "To the 11-year old Shiho, happy brithday!" The tapes are recorded messages from Elena to a more grown-up Shiho who she would have not been able to meet.

In the middle of this case we have Haibara sitting in Agasa's basement listening to the tapes that were recovered in the previous case. "Shiho, won't you regret what you are about to do? If so, I am totally on your side. I'll never loose faith in you. Do your best. Well, it'll be your 19th birthday next time... bye-bye honey, oh, by the way... maybe you are old enough to hear this... I'm really..." However this is all we get to hear of the tape. (Later in the series we get the continuation of the quote.)

After receiving a message from Vermouth on her phone while on the train, Haibara freaks out and ditches the main group and hides around the corner as to not be detected. She then has a flashback to the words that her mother left her on the tapes (that were recovered 400 chapters ago). This version was translated slightly different than the original: "Alright, so the next time will be your 19th birthday... bye-bye see you soon... oh yes, maybe its about time I told you... the truth is, your mom is making a truly terrifying drug at the moment... my lab mates are getting really excited about it, they say it's like a "dream drug"... your dad and I are putting our hopes on it and calling it... the silver bullet! But in order to complete the drug, your dad and I will have to leave you and your sister... please understand Shiho..."

At the end of the case [[Rei Furuya|Bourbon]]'s identity is revealed and he tells the person he believes to be Shiho that she looks very much like her mother. He reveals that he has met both of the Miyano parents as well as Akemi. However that Shiho happened to be Kaitou Kid in a mask with Haibara feeding him lines.

[[Kohji Haneda]] and [[Amanda Hughes]] who were killed in their hotel rooms 17 years ago may have been killed by that drug. In contrast to her serious and mind-your-own-business behavior towards her patients, Elena seems very frank with Rei. The reason behind this is she can relate to him being a half-japanese herself. She advises him against fighting and tells him that he shouldn't come if gets into another fight. But if he hurts his pride by explaining to bullies why he is no different to them, she will surely put a bandage on it. It is revealed that during the flashback, Elena was three months pregnant with Shiho.

In 2014 [[Gosho Aoyama]] did an interview with the Da Vinci magazine in which he revealed that "Two mothers will be revealed to be sisters". Many people jumped in with the idea that [[Mary Sera|Mary]], the [[Akai family]] mother, would be one of them since she is a recently introduced character of the arc that was happening at the time. Additional speculation began to link Elena as the other sister due to her being mentioned in the same question of the same interview. Furthermore, the two are both British.

In November 2015, the manga [[Volume 89#Department Store Stabbing Case|Department Store Stabbing Case]], Conan noticed some left over make-up on [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]]'s face that made it look like she had the [[Akai family]] eye bags. Conan immediately began to suspect that Haibara may be related to Mary. At this stage in the series we have not seen Elena Miyano's eyes for comparison.

In an interview in Singapore in 2016, Gosho confirmed that [[Shuichi Akai]] and [[Akemi Miyano]] are cousins. It is stated at 34:23 in the audio link.<ref>Aoyama Gosho's Q&A with fans.
