During his latest heist, Kid is challenged by a French thief, Chat Noir to a jewel heist. [[File:Kid meets Chat Noir.jpg|250px|thumb|right|When Kid successfully got the jeweled dagger, he meets the strange thief called Chat Noir.]]The target is part of the Marie Antoinette collection; Marie's ring cat's eye ring, the Golden Eye on the upcoming Sunday at 9pm! Kid obviously accepts. On that day, before Kaito arrives, Mitsuishi and Nakamori talk to each other, and Mitsuishi tells Nakamori that the Golden Eye is the last Marie Antoinette jewel that Chat Noir hasn't stolen yet. It will be displayed at the hotel, along with a trap to capture Kid and Chat Noir.

Later Kaito arrives at the hotel with Aoko who brings a bento (lunch box) for her father. Dan Mitsuishi tells them that the glass in the building is surrounded with special material that takes 10 tons of force to break. He gives Inspector Nakamori a tie pin which Kaito helps to fasten on, and Nakamori comments on the flashy jewel names. Aoko reveals that she and Ruby talked about their birthstones. Later, Kaito is found in the mens' bathroom, wiping the Golden Eye when a call from overseas arrive. It turns out to be Hakuba, whom is apparently in France to follow Spider and has heard of the heist. He gives Kaito the information about the jewels and that Chat Noir always uses the same mold for the fakes. Nakamori is put in charge of guarding the ring, which he wears over a glove. When the heist starts, Kid turns the light off and appears in front of Nakamori holding a lighter. When the lights go back on, the jewel on Nakamori's glove is gone. The ring flies off and the police force tussles. Kid, disguised as a policeman, picks up the ring and runs. Then when Kid is on top of the elevator, he gets a call from a cell phone lying on the window sill on near Kid. He answers it and it turns out to be Chat Noir.

On the phone at the elevator, Kid reveals Chat Noir's secret identity, '''Ruby Jones'''. Kaito deduced she was really French during her talk with Aoko. Ruby Jones had said that their birthdays' were close, but Ruby was referring to the French birthstone chart (Ruby = March and Sapphire = April), not the Japanese (Ruby = July and Sapphire = September). Kaito Kid had Jii give Ruby Jones the "real" jewel because he agreed with her motives as a thief. The Golden Eye is really a fake. Ruby's father made the cat's eyes jewels at Dan Mitsuishi's father's request. The senior Mitsuishi, Ken Mitsuishi, was a Marie Antoinette fan who wanted to give his wife jewels that Marie Antoinette would have worn. The elder Mitsuishi then changed his mind and decided to exhibit them as real Marie Antoinette jewelry, and Ruby Jones' father killed himself out of shame that Marie Antoinette's name was being sullied by his fakes. Ruby decided to steal all the fake Marie Antoinette collection back to respect her father's memory.

Kaito is a second-year student at Ekoda High School Class 2-B alongside his childhood friend [[Aoko Nakamori]], the witch [[Akako Koizumi]], and transfer student detective [[Saguru Hakuba]]. Kaito discovers his father's identity as the original [[Kaitou Kid]] after eight years following his death thanks to a secret room inside his house as well as talking with his father's attendant and friend, [[Konosuke Jii]]. Wanting to pick up where Jii left off, Kaito continues to be Kaitou Kid in an effort to lure out [[Magic Kaito Organization|his father's murderers]] by making Kid a world-famous thief once again.

Kaito as his normal self seems to be rather popular in school although he tends to get in trouble with the ladies, particularly Aoko, for flipping up their skirts or peeking on them in the locker room. He is a compulsive trickster who loves to demonstrate his magic tricks and share them with others, and hates to see people upset. ===Magic Kaito===
The day after the Kaitou Kid makes his return after an eight-year hiatus, Kaito stumbles through a trap door in his room and discovers that his father, [[Toichi Kuroba]], was the original Kaitou Kid. Kaito dons his father's costume to discover the identity of the new Kaitou Kid, revealed to be his father's old assistant [[Konosuke Jii]]. Jii tells Kaito that Toichi had been murdered eight years ago, and that he had dressed as the Kid and staged the heist in order to lure Toichi's killers.

So Kaito adopts the mantle of the Kid, having proven that he is more skilled than the aging and serious Jii. As the Kaitou Kid, Kaito stages several high-profile jewel heists with the intention of smoking out his father's killers (although he seems to be enjoying himself in the process). It isn't until the ''Blue Birthday'' heist that the murderers appear and reveal that they are searching for the doublet red-coloured gem [[Pandora]], said to shed tears of immortality during the passing of a particular comet. Since then, he has appeared in several Detective Conan cases. In other instances, Kid has staged heists when people such as [[Jirokichi Suzuki]] have called him out, or when criminals have used the Kaitou Kid's name to deflect blame from themselves, as in the Sunset Mansion case or the Seiran case. He also appeared in the Ryoma case to expose several counterfeiters who were pretending to possess items that another thief called the Phantom Lady had stolen years ago. A young Kaito also appeared in a flashback during which Conan recalled a riddle that he and Ran had tried to solve when they were in first grade. It turned out that the 'riddler' had been the original Kaitou Kid, [[Toichi Kuroba]], who seemed to be a friend of [[Yusaku Kudo]].

In chapter 824, Kid had played a significant role in main Detective Conan plot by disguising as Sherry under Conan's request. Their plan successfully tricked the Black Organization into believing she is dead.

In [[The Lost Ship in the Sky]], it's revealed that Kaito knew Conan's real identity of Shinichi Kudo. He helped Conan who was thrown out of the airship and they worked together to get back. Kaito has disguised himself as Shinichi three times, in [[The Last Wizard of the Century]], in [[Magician of the Silver Sky]], and in [[The Lost Ship in the Sky]] which led Sato and Takagi to suspect that Shinichi was Kaitou Kid. The two later share their suspicion with Heiji to which he responded with an 'Are you kidding me?' face.

Kaito and [[Aoko Nakamori]] have been best friends since they were little and first met at the clock tower. They are portrayed as a similar pairing to [[Shinichi Kudo]] and [[Ran Mouri]] (including how the characters are drawn), except much sillier. Kaito often teases Aoko by flipping her skirt. However, it has been seen that Kaito is quite protective of Aoko and doesn't appear to want her to go on a date with [[Saguru Hakuba]]. Aoko was somewhat suspicious that Kaito was actually Kaitou Kid, and in order to prove his innocence, she brought him along to a movie when a heist had been scheduled. She handcuffed him to the seat, but Kaito managed to escape and pull off the heist, thus veering Aoko's suspicions away from him. The two appear to have feelings for each other, but neither has admitted it as of yet.

Since Akako's first appearance in Volume 1, she's attempted to get Kaito to fall head over heels for her using whatever means necessary, including using a voodoo doll and hurting him in the process. Akako's obsession with Kaito comes from Kaitou Kid, whom she realizes is Kaito, being the only man on Earth able to resist her. The relationship between Hakuba and Kaito is a rather tense one; since Hakuba convinced himself early on that Kaito was instead Kid, and during the first few volumes he's constantly throwing out offhand comments that show his suspicion. Ever since Kaito met Conan, Kaito always seems to be anticipating Conan's appearance at his heists. As he said before, Conan makes the heists so exciting, as both of them are geniuses, one is a thief who creates puzzles while the detective unravels them. Conan views Kaito's heists as entertainment, since the crimes and mysteries he solves are getting a bit boring.{{citation needed}} However, Kaito dislikes when Conan unravels his tricks before he demonstrates them or when Conan gives him payback for a particularly troublesome trick. Despite this, Conan and Kaito have a friendly rivalry. Kaito sometimes helps Conan whenever he's in trouble; Kaito has helped Conan solve crimes and protect Conan's friends. Conan sometimes lets Kaito escape for various reasons, never telling the police about him, though sometimes not before getting a little revenge. Conan once said that "If Kaitou Kid is to disappear, it would become boring", yet Conan also says he will be the one to catch Kaitou Kid, and put him behind the bars. In the manga and anime, Kaito knows Conan is far smarter than an average grade school boy, but it unclear if Kaito knows Conan is the shrunken teenage Shinichi. In the movies, Kaito knows Conan is Shinichi from the events of [[Movie 3]]. Both Conan and Kaito have nicknames for one another. "Great Detective-kun" is Kaito's nickname for Conan and "Kid" is Conan's nickname for Kaito.

Prior to arriving in Japan, Hakuba spent time as a detective in England and attended London Bridge High School. According to Hakuba's father, Saguru is most interested in meeting the infamous [[Kaitou Kid]] and is taken to the ''Adam's Smile'' painting heist. Hakuba fails to capture Kid but begins collecting clues as to Kid's true identity.

In the anime special adaptation of Hakuba's introduction, [[The Brilliant Rivals]], the circumstances of Hakuba's and Kaito's meeting have been altered. The target is a purple gem in the eye of the ''Bronze Statue''. It is revealed that Hakuba has no interest in capturing Kaitou Kid, but rather, [[Spider]] who is part of the mysterious organization that Kaito is after. Hakuba humiliates the police and he figures out where Kaitou Kid was hiding. He nearly captures the thief with sleeping gas, but Kaitou Kid takes his gas mask so Hakuba is taken down by his own trick. Kaitou Kid then disguises as Hakuba to get close to the gem, but the scheme is quickly figured out when the police finds Hakuba's sleeping body. Later, Hakuba forces himself to wake up when Kaitou Kid is caught in Spider's illusion. Hakuba saves him by spraying him with water. After both Spider and Kaitou Kid escape, Hakuba falls asleep once more. Much to Kaito's dismay, Hakuba transfers into Ekoda High School Class 2-B and continues his mission to unmask Kid. Kid was therefore not expecting a challenge, so when the officers trick him into revealing himself and successfully locate him in the ventilation shafts, Kid wonders aloud who, if not Hakuba, could be helping the police.

Hakuba also made a cameo of sorts in the tenth Detective Conan movie, ''[[The Private Eyes' Requiem]]''. Claiming that someone dear to him had been captured by the theme park, he assisted Conan and Heiji in their investigations that day but later disappeared after they were separated by attackers. He telephoned Kaito from Paris to give him information on the thief known as Chat Noir, and also appeared in the Dark Knight arc, where he arrived too late to stop Kid's theft but correctly deduced his methods and kept up with Kaito in uncovering the identity of the mysterious 'Nightmare.'

Saguru Hakuba's first appearance in Detective Conan was in the Twilight Palace case, where he was one of six detectives invited to investigate a murder that had been committed 40 years ago in an old mansion. His second, and only other canonical appearance, was in the [[Volume 54#Detective Koshien Case|Detective Koshien Case]]. Although he initially believed that he was to represent the 'east' in a contest between four high school detectives, in fact the competition had been arranged by a woman seeking a detective 'with a strange accent' who had incorrectly accused her friend of committing a murder. Thinking that Hakuba's Japanese might be accented due to his time in Britain, she invited him, as well as [[Heiji Hattori]], who is well known for his strong Kansai accent.

During the Detective Koshien case, it was stated that Hakuba had returned to England sometime before the case, and had returned to Japan specifically to compete in the Koshien, thus explaining his absence from the Kaitou Kid heists in Detective Conan.

Hakuba appeared in [[The Gathering of the Detectives! Shinichi Kudo vs. Kaitou Kid|'''Episode 219''': The Gathering of the Detectives! Shinichi Kudo vs. Kaitou Kid (2 Hour Special)]]. During the Kid case, set some time before [[Shinichi Kudo|Shinichi]] was shrunk, Kaito thinks to himself that the heist will be much easier without Hakuba around, as he has apparently returned to England. Kid was therefore not expecting a challenge, so when the officers trick him into revealing himself and successfully locate him in the ventilation shafts, Kid wonders aloud who, if not Hakuba, could be helping the police.

Hakuba also made a cameo of sorts in the tenth Detective Conan movie, ''[[The Private Eyes' Requiem]]''. Claiming that someone dear to him had been captured by the theme park, he assisted Conan and Heiji in their investigations that day but later disappeared after they were separated by attackers. It is later revealed that 'Hakuba' was actually Kaitou Kid in disguise.

Hakuba's father is the Metropolitan Chief of Police in Japan. His mother is British. His family also apparently runs a research laboratory in Japan. His father appeared only once in Magic Kaito, when he asked [[Ginzo Nakamori|Inspector Nakamori]] to look after Saguru.

The relationship between Hakuba and [[Kaito Kuroba|Kaito]] is a rather tense one; Hakuba convinced himself early on that Kaito was indeed Kid, and during the first few volumes he's constantly throwing out offhand comments that show his suspicion. However, later on in the Manga, we have a small scene where Hakuba calls Kaito from Paris in order to give him some information on 'Chat Noir', a dangerous, fellow gem thief trying to outshine Kid.<ref>{{cite book|last=Aoyama|first=Gosho|title=Magic Kaito|volume=Volume 4|publisher=Shogakukan|date=1994-10-15|isbn=4-09-122093-5|chapter=Golden Eye Part 1|language=Japanese|location=Tokyo|page=18}}</ref> Though Kaito continues to vehemently deny being Kid, Hakuba gives him the information anyways, ending the conversation with, "Do your best at least. I don't want to see you lose to anyone before I capture you myself". Whether that was his actual motive, or if he was merely concerned for Kaito's well being, or a mix of both, is unknown.

Prior to the heist in Volume 3, Chapter 3, Hakuba seems to flirt with [[Aoko Nakamori|Aoko]] after Kaito turns down Aoko's offer to go to the Prince Prince concert. Hakuba and Kaito then make a bet that if Hakuba manages to catch Kid then Hakuba will go to the concert with Aoko, and if he fails to capture the thief, Kaito will go instead. When interviewed before the heist, Hakuba notes "Tonight's battle has a special meaning to me".<ref name="Vol3Chp3" /> Although initially excited to have Hakuba want to go to the concert with her, Aoko during the actual heist seems to want Hakuba to fail so that she can go to the concert with Kaito instead. This relationship has not been touched upon much since then because of Hakuba's limited appearances in Magic Kaito and Detective Conan.
