Heiji is a high school detective, and the son of [[Heizo Hattori]], chief of the Osaka Police Department, and his wife [[Shizuka Hattori]]. Heiji wants to be a detective like his father since spending his childhood looking for lost cats in his neighborhood, and he is also very skilled in kendo and has become a favored tournament contender for his school.

At one time during their childhood, Heiji had had the unfortunate idea of locking himself and his friend [[Kazuha Toyama|Kazuha]] together with a set of old handcuffs which had no key to unlock it; as a result they involuntarily had to spend time together even on some rather intimate occasions (i.e., bathroom visits) before the cuffs could be removed. As a reminder of this 'closeness' and for good luck, Kazuha fashioned two identical lucky charms, each incorporating a chain link from the cuffs, which she and Heiji have been wearing ever since.<ref name=StabbedWallet>Manga Volume 19: Files 185 (Stabbed Wallet Case)</ref>

In the news, Heiji has been publicly declared the "Great Detective of the West", while [[Shinichi Kudo]] is the "Great Detective of the East". As a result, Heiji showed up unannounced at the Mouri Detective Agency looking for Kudo, seeking to challenge his rival to a showdown of wits. During their second encounter, Conan knocked Heiji out to use him as the mouthpiece for the voice-changing bow-tie. But during his final presentation of the facts, Heiji awoke prematurely and discovered Conan's secret, and in the end managed to blackmail Conan into revealing all.<ref>Manga Chapters 121: The Holmes Freak Case: The Revelation</ref> Ever since that revelation, Heiji has been helping Conan in hiding his secret identity, though he constantly slips up by calling him "Kudo" in front of [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] and Kazuha.

Heiji and Conan most often congenially team up to solve assorted cases. == Personality ==
Even while solving a case, Heiji tends to be lighthearted and good-humored, preferring to work through it with a grin on his face. He is a big fan of baseball, and is most of the time shown wearing an Osaka cap, to support the local Osaka baseball team. He usually wears his cap with its visor pointed backward, but if he feels challenged, he turns the visor forward.

Heiji is known for his pride as an Osaka citizen and for his thick Osakan accent, which has been pointed out and sometimes made fun numerous times. However, Heiji holds his head high and is always one to brag about the greatness of Osaka, especially when Conan comes to visit.

Despite him knowing the value and necessity of remaining calm in the face of a crime, Heiji tends to be impulsive at times, which tends to cloud his judgment a little. This was discussed directly in the "Detective Koushien" case, when [[Saguru Hakuba]] accused Heiji of being a poor detective for disrupting a crime scene in his rush to see if the victim could still be saved. Heiji, however, solved the case in the end, and reminded Saguru that the detective's first job is to prevent death if he can. Heiji is also known to be extremely protective of those he values as close friends, and tries hard to keep them out of harm. Furthermore, he's pretty much always watching Shinichi's back, and does whatever he can to not only keep Shinichi safe, but to keep his identity under cover. However, on one occasion Heiji advised Conan to tell the truth, when Ran had convinced herself that Conan was Shinichi and thus willingly gave him blood after being shot.

Heiji occasionally enjoys teasing Shinichi's kid form. He has fun jokingly (sometimes mistakenly) calling Conan "Kudo" in front of Ran at his friend's expense. He often treats Conan/ Shinichi as a younger brother and their close relationship even evokes Kazuha's jealousy from time to time. In return Conan truly trusts and respects Heiji.

Although he is very competitive when it comes to detective cases, when a case gets hot, he and Shinichi work effectively together. Although he frequently mocks Kazuha for her superstitions and enthusiasm for good-luck charms, Heiji has several times revealed that he puts more trust in them than he would admit. He once dreamed of Shinichi being murdered, and out subsequently insisted that Conan wear his omamori, the good luck charm Kazuha gave him. == Appearance ==

Heiji has dark brown, spiky hair and dark brown skin which he claims is inherited from his grandfather. His eyes are blue in the manga (like every character). Initially, his eyes appeared dark green, but are now blue<ref>[[Episode 710]]</ref>. He speaks with a strong Kansai Ben accent, which is typical of the Osaka region. Since Heiji is so strongly accustomed to this accent, his lingual habit can be a disadvantage at times, especially when he has to impersonate someone who uses standard Japanese.<ref>[[Volume 26# School Play Case|Manga Chapter 256: ''Concealed Truth'']]</ref><ref>OVA 06: ''[[Follow the Vanished Diamond! Conan & Heiji vs. Kid!]]''</ref> He has a scar behind the left ear from being hit during an Oyodo competition.

He has also been shown to be popular with girls due to his good looks, position as kendo captain at his high school, and his fame as a high school detective. For example, in episode 263 when several girls tried to flirt with him but he had switched his gear with another team member to make a last minute call to Conan to visit his match. This was shown in Magic File 4: The Osaka Okonomiyaki Killer where several girls came to ask for an autograph and in [[OVA 9]], he was referred to as a lady killer.

Heiji's detective skills are same as [[Shinichi]]'s. Because of his skills, Heiji has acquired his nick name "The Great Detective Of The West". Like Shinichi, he has a keen eye for details, and can spot any unusual aspects in a case that most people tend to ignore or not take into account and has extraordinarily broad and deep knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases. He repeatedly demonstrates the ability to recall every detail of an investigation, and may have a photographic memory to manage such perfect recall so consistently. Heiji's fastidious attention to detail allows him to notice minor inconsistencies in crime scenes and suspect testimony. However, unlike Shinichi, Heiji seem to be more competitive and hot-blooded while solving a case, which sometimes leads him into making a wrong deduction [[Diplomat Murder Case| i.e. the case in his first appearance.]]

Like the other 'geniuses' of Detective Conan, Heiji has shown himself to have an eidetic memory, capable of remembering complex letter and number sequences at only a glance, such as when he was able to solve a code in his head during the "Heiji and Kazuha in Grave Danger" arc, and even reproduce another message using the same code to text to Conan.

As Shinichi is to soccer, so is Heiji to kendo. He's the fifth position, or taisho, and captain of his high school Kendo team. Heiji may disable criminals using an improvised bokken similar to how Shinichi uses his soccer skills.

Heiji is also very nimble. He can jump higher than a bookshelf, and balance perfectly on a katana. This is shown in episode 263 of the anime, when Kotegawa tries to kill him.

Heiji is also a capable motorcycle rider. He also speaks fluent English. During Episode 291, Heiji has shown to have the ability to deduce a woman's swimsuit without actually looking at it.

== Plot overview ==

===Great Detective of the West (Manga: [[Volume_10#Great_Detective_of_the_West|92-96]], Anime: [[Diplomat Murder Case|48-49]])===

One day, Conan (using his [[Voice-Changing Bowtie|Voice-Changer Tie]] to imitate [[Shinichi Kudo|his old voice]]) calls [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] to tell her once again that he is all right and that he is still stuck with the 'special case' when Ran hangs up on him as someone has just entered the detective agency. Coming home, Conan finds to his surprise that the 'customer' is a youth who keeps demanding to see Shinichi Kudo. He had read of Kogoro solving cases and jumps to the conclusion that he is getting help from Shinichi. When Ran mentions that Shinichi has just called, without asking about Ran's state, the youth deduces that Shinichi must actually be nearby, watching Ran from afar. He then introduces himself as high school detective Heiji Hattori and presents a gift, a bottle of [[baijiu]], of which he gives Conan a swig. Just then, Kimie Tsujimura, the wife of a known diplomat, enters [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]]'s office to ask him to investigate the girlfriend of her son. In order to be inconspicuous, Kogoro takes Ran and Conan along, and Heiji, hoping to flush out Shinichi, tags along as well. What is originally meant to be a simple investigation job turns out to be a murder case, as they find Kimie's husband slain at his desk.

After this first case, it only takes one more run-in with Conan to get Heiji thinking about the similarities between Conan and Shinichi. It is on the "[[Holmes Freak Murder Case]]" that Heiji, despite professing a preference for [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellery_Queen Ellery Queen], exercises the Holmesian axiom: "When you've eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." In addition, after Conan had [[Stun-Gun Wristwatch|knocked him out]] to use him as his mouthpiece to present his evidence, Heiji receives a clout on the head from [[Kogoro Mouri]], which wakes him up again, and from the corner of his eye he spies Conan standing behind him and using his [[Voice-Changing Bowtie]] to mimic his voice; he thus discovers Conan's secret, which forces Conan to explain his situation.

On their third case together, Conan was initially irritated to see Heiji, but they quickly formed a strong team. Together they cornered the murderer and even took steps to preventing the suicide she had planned. When she realizes that she won't be able to kill herself she weeps piteously, causing Heiji to whisper to Conan, "perhaps we should have let her die." Conan replies that "a detective who corners a murderer with logic and then lets them commit suicide is no better than a murderer."

Heiji calls Conan having deciphered the text in the first new chapter, and with this information Conan manages to solve the rest of the hidden riddles.

===Stabbed Wallet Case (Manga: [[Volume_19#Stabbed_Wallet_Case|185-188]], Anime: [[The Naniwa Serial Murder Case|118]])===

Heiji invites Conan (and [[Kogoro Mouri]] and [[Ran Mouri]], because otherwise it'd look suspicious) to Osaka. It is revealed by [[Kazuha Toyama]] (in her first appearance) that Heiji has been talking about 'Kudo' so often that Kazuha thought 'Kudo' was his new Tokyo girlfriend. Heiji suggests that the reason he invited Conan to Osaka is because he has been worried about Conan's safety; he has had dreams of Conan being murdered. On a case together in Osaka, Heiji gives Conan his omamori, which ends up saving his life by deflecting a knife thrust. However, without it Heiji is injured while trying to prevent the murderer from committing suicide. In the ambulance, he reveals to Conan that he has taken to heart Conan's admonishment.

===Wedding Murder Case (Manga: [[Volume_21#Wedding_Murder_Case|211-214]], Anime: [[The Night Before the Wedding Locked Room Case|141-142]])===

Heiji and Kazuha visit Tokyo accompanied by Kogoro, Ran, and Conan. They run into Heiji's father's friend and are invited to their mansion. There a murder occurs and his father's friend is found dead in a locked room. It seems he was dragged to another room after being stabbed in the heart. Continuing the investigation, Heiji proclaims the butler was the murderer and he is taken away, screaming his innocence. Late that night, an unknown man takes the murder weapon and tries to place it in a bag, but is caught by Heiji and Conan who reveal that they placed the blame on the butler to lure out the true culprit. The culprit is revealed to be Kikuhito Morizono. He reveals that he murdered the man because he tried to cancel the wedding and take his love away from him.

===Cruise Ship Murder Case (Manga: [[Volume_23#Cruise_Ship_Murder_Case|225-230]], Anime: [[The Twenty Year Old Murderous Intent: The Symphony Serial Murder Case|174]])===

In this episode, Heiji meets up once again with Conan and the gang on an overnight cruise in Tokyo. Unfortunately, instead of being able to spend a relaxing day on board, a serial murder case is created, leaving Heiji and Conan to work together to solve it. After they gather much of the evidence of the murder cases, Heiji and Conan share their deductions with each other only to find that, once again, their deductions are different. Heiji tries to beat Conan to the truth and goes off on his own to investigate. When he happens to come across the final piece of evidence that disproves both his and Conan's deductions, he is attacked and thrown overboard into the ocean. Later, Conan realizes that he's missing and is extremely concerned.

Kogoro and Heiji are hired to solve a murder case in a mansion supposedly haunted by a spider demon. Heiji and Kazuha, on their way to the mansion, find one of the residents who is also lost: an American named Robert Taylor who is a photographer. The three are picked up by Kogoro and co. in a truck. Apparently, the spider god's victims are always found hanged. During their stay, they find a hanged man surrounded by web-like strings. The case continues, and Conan and Heiji investigate further in the case. Conan and Heiji cooperate to reveal the murderer's identity and his trick.

Ran is cast in a school play. While discussing the play with her friends backstage, Conan shows up wearing a face mask due to a cold. During a romantic scene, a man in the audience falls dead, seemingly by potassium cyanide, as revealed by a young man in the audience who appears to be Shinichi Kudo. This is quickly debunked, as Kazuha recognizes Heiji in disguise, and the real Shinichi has shown up anyway. Heiji originally planned on disguising as Shinichi in order to clear Ran's suspicions that Conan and Shinichi were one and the same, and was unaware that Shinichi would take the antidote with Haibara present in disguise as Conan.

===Old Photograph Murder Case (Manga: [[Volume_28#Old_Photograph_Murder_Case|278]], Anime: [[The Client Full of Lies|221]])===

A woman named Shizuka Ikenami asks Kogoro to help find a man named Shiro Shibata so she could retrieve an old photograph; Conan realizes that the Ikenami is lying to Kogoro when she introduces herself for unknown reasons. After Conan solved the case, Heiji and Kazuha arrive and reveal that Shizuka Ikenami is actually Heiji's mother. Shizuka confesses and tells Kogoro that she wanted to see what kind of person he was since Heiji was injured the last time he stayed over.

===Mermaid's Curse Case (Manga: [[Volume_28#Mermaid's_Curse_Case|279-283]], Anime: [[And Then There Were No Mermaids|222-224]])===

Heiji along with Conan, Ran, and Kogoro visit the Isle of Mermaids looking for Saori, who had sent a letter to Heiji and Kogoro asking them to save her from being killed by a mermaid, but when they try to look for her she has been reported missing. Conan and Heiji investigate the area and history of Mermaids Grave, a forest on the island. They learn that an elder who is over 130 years old is a holder of the arrow and the head of the festival. While investigating, three murders occur. Conan reveals to Heiji he knows who the murderer is and to meet him later, but later he and Kazuha fall off a cliff. Kazuha attempts to save Heiji by stabbing him with an arrow so that he would let go of her and save himself, but Heiji persists and ends up saving both Kazuha and himself in the end.

At the Mouri Detective Agency, Conan is on the phone talking to Heiji about the much publicised K3 Restaurant's opening party. Heiji's parents got invited but they both got colds and are unable to attend. Heiji decides to invite Conan, Ran, and Kogoro to come to the party. Three famous athletes from America are going to be there also. Once Heiji tells Conan who the three athletes are, Conan accepts the invitation. Suddenly, the news reporter named Ed McCay, who was invited to the K3 Restaurant, asks whether Japan isn't the home of many scandals, and mentions that K stands for "kitanai" meaning filth. Heiji wonders who he is and Kogoro mentions that McCay is famous in America. He's a reporter who specializes in exposing famous athletes' scandals like taking illegal drugs, playing fixed games and having secret affairs. McCay later gets murdered, but Heiji and Conan solve the case.

Heiji comes to investigate only to find that the body had somehow been moved to the shower room without anyone noticing. While Heiji was investigating, Kazuha suddenly appears asking Heiji to come back and take part in tournament and told him that Shinichi (Actually Conan, with whom Heiji was talking using the name "Kudo") would solve this case before him, which made Heiji jealous and he told Kazuha to not to tell anything about this case to Kudo. After a thorough investigation, Heiji reveals the culprit before Shinichi. However, in the end Heiji's high school lost the tournament because of Heiji's absence, but he seemed to be happy because he won his duel against Kudo. After the culprit is arrested, Heiji and Conan explore the town.

While at Agasa's house, Conan recalls his last meeting with the Black Organization. Conan deduces that another Black Organization member must have been at the hotel party. This is when he finally singles out Chris Vineyard as his suspect. Heiji came to Tokyo to help Conan out with the case. Heiji suspects Jodie-sensei of being a possible Black Organization member, and although Conan seems reluctant to support this idea, they pay Jodie-sensei a visit at her apartment. They find out here that her full name is "Jodie Saintemillion". After Jodie agrees to go out for a while with Heiji and Conan, the man living next door to Jodie falls dead outside from over 30 stories coincidentally as the three step outside. After the police arrive, it seems likely that the man committed suicide. However, Conan and Heiji have their doubts. Heiji immediately destroys the theory of suicide by showing that the man who fell from his apartment attempted to grab onto a curtain to save his life. Conan and Heiji reveal the truth by showing how the room was switched around so that when the man was drunken he would expect to be stepping out onto the balcony, but instead would wind up falling. After they solve the case, Heiji asks Jodie who she is. In reply, Jodie asks Heiji the same question. When Conan and Heiji leave, they concur that Jodie is suspicious but innocuous. The ending scene shows that she's already on to them in that Jodie's already knows Heiji's name and has pictures of Kudo during the time he regressed back to his former self in the Desperate Revival arc.

They investigate Detective Kasukawa's home and discover evidence that Heiji had been there. Conan finds a memo which discloses Kenbashi City, Ito Residence. They investigate those with the surname Ito but are unable to find information about Heiji. Meanwhile, it is revealed Heiji is held hostage by Misari Ito, an attorney who is the head of a tax evasion group. Ito demands Heiji to solve a code made by Kasukawa which contains a seven-digit-code to a safe box containing evidence of her scandal. While held at gunpoint, Heiji sends a modified version of the code to Kogoro and asks him to solve it. Conan manages to solve the code, realizing that K, Q, and J stand for King, Queen, and Jack and replaces them with numbers accordingly. When Heiji receives the code back from Kogoro, he tells Misari he will tell her the seven digits and they head to the bank. Conan realizes the last three digits are actually letters and realizes what Heiji is trying to tell him and replies a modified code. Heiji tells Misari Ito he will tell her the seven digits and they head to the bank. Heiji reveals that the numbers, if placed in a 3 by 3 diagram, will create a diagram of a dice with the 1's representing the dots on a dice. Heiji reveals that the code he sent Kogoro had the letters LIB meaning Libra which is referring to the scales Libra and the attorney badge Ito has; He explains that the code "Kogoro" replied with means to "Lure One of them Out". At Ito's home, Conan knocks out the two kidnappers and frees Kazuha. The police arrive later and apprehends the criminals.

At every crime scene, a horse would be found engulfed in flames, as the house where the crime occurred, gets burnt down. Humorously, all the cases that appeared to be linked to a serial killer, were not connected at all. It was all done to lessen the suspicion on the culprit's true intention of murder. During their conversation, Heiji invited Kogoro and Conan to assist him in a new case that he wished to solve. They keep a close watch on the house whose occupant had asked for their assistance, even after the one who requested them declined the service. They kept surveillance for a long time until Ran called and asked them to hurry back home for dinner. Just as they left, the house went up in flames, along with a red horse. The woman who had asked them for help was burnt to death. The case triggered the enthusiasm in the two young detectives (Conan and Heiji), and they uncovered the murderer through a joint investigation.

Through a phone call between Heiji and Conan (Shinichi), Heiji mentions that he had come across another young detective in the past who seemed more brilliant than him. A flashback then occurs to reveal what had happened before. It was on a middle school trip among many different schools when a crime happened. A famous actor was murdered, but was told to have committed suicide. Heiji and Shinichi both had set out to solve the case independently, only to know time and again that the other person was just ahead of them in figuring things out. The two detectives had unknowingly solved the same case and stumbled upon the same conclusion, without knowing who the other person is. At the end of the episode it is revealed that the totally awesome detective that Heiji is talking about, is none other than Shinichi.

Heiji, along with Ran, Kogoro and Kazuha, finds Shinichi with his memory completely erased, during a village trip. They are also surprised to find that almost everyone in the village seems to hate Shinichi, due to a supposedly 'stupid' and 'flawed' solution he gave about the deaths of the local leader and his wife, one year ago. A news reporter, who was present to cover the original case, accuses Shinichi of faking the memory loss and states that she knows the 'truth' about him. The next morning, the reporter is found stabbed, with no one but Shinichi in the house, and a knife with him, turning him into the one and only suspect.

Heiji takes it upon himself to both prove Shinichi's innocence and hide him from the police, helped by Ran, Kogoro and Kazuha. He skilfully proves that the culprit had undergone cosmetic surgery, to impersonate Shinichi and commit a crime to destroy his reputation. The real Shinichi, too, turns up (after mistakenly ingesting [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]]'s APTX 4869 antidote prototype) to justify his deductions about the year-old double deaths.

After the antidote's effects start wearing off, Heiji tries to prevent Shinichi from turning into Conan in front of Ran, by taking him to the toilet and asking him to hide in his (Heiji's) travel bag, so that he can make up some story about the disappearance and get him home.

This is a continuation of the plot from the 'Murderer Shinichi Kudo' episode. While returning home in Kogoro's hired car, the group spot a dead man inside a speeding car, and are able to stop it. Heiji and Shinichi, after narrowing down the suspects, together apprehend the criminal with such finesse that even Detective [[Miwako Sato]] (who happened to be present there along with her colleague, [[Wataru Takagi]]) is left surprised. Heiji also lends Shinichi his cap to prevent him from being recognized easily, due to Shinichi's fears about the [[Black Organization]].

Like Shinichi's relationship with Ran, Heiji's relationship with [[Kazuha Toyama|Kazuha]] is a very close one: they know each other since their childhoods, and have stayed close through the years. Their relationship is identified as a romantic one by other characters and fans alike, even though they claim that they don't have that sort of relationship or feelings for each other. Heiji is clueless when it comes to love and in the majority of the manga and anime has not yet realized he has actual feelings for Kazuha. However, it has been shown that he becomes visibly jealous when he sees Kazuha with other guys, becoming distracted throughout the whole case. At one point, after a certain case, while looking at Kazuha, his thoughts read: 'Fool. You're too naive. I promise you, as long as you're with me, I'll never let anyone hurt you.'. Kazuha knows she has feelings for Heiji, as she shows this by being protective and chasing off other women that might have a interest in him In on of the mangas Kazuha attempts to confess her feelings after finding out that Shinichi had done so with Ran, but is unlucky because by telling him, Heiji ran off to tease Conan(Shinichi) for it. She one time even attempted to sacrifice herself to save Heiji during a case in which accidentally both fell off a cliff. When the branch that Heiji was holding and both of them were hanging on to was breaking, she stabbed his hand with an arrow of love to prevent him from falling and force him to let her fall; however, he still held on despite the wound. Also, they have a similar situation to Ran and Shinichi, being childhood friends that have romantic feelings for each other and have similar backgrounds. Heiji is a teenage detective and she is a police detective's daughter, like Ran is a detective's daughter and Shinichi is a teenage detective. They are even called the 'Ran and Shinichi of Osaka' by fans of the series, since they're so similar. Although they are constantly fighting, they both are very close friends. It is also shown in the seventh movie, ''[[Crossroad in the Ancient Capital]]'', that Kazuha is Heiji's first love, though he didn't know it was her at the time. In the most recent case, Heiji confessed to Kazuha when she was taken away by some suspicious men, saying "What are you doing to my Kazuha?!". When Kazuha questioned him about it, he claimed that she was wrong and there was no evidence that proves his confession (although Shinichi recorded it). Nonetheless, it is shown in the file 912 that he has actually realized his feelings for her, as Ran questions him about the confession. He denies it to her, but thinks that he needed a more important place to confess, as Kudo confessed in front of the Big Ben.

Heiji acts rather brotherly towards [[Shinichi Kudo|Shinichi]], even going so far as to pretend to be him on various occasions so that no one figures out that Shinichi and Conan are the same person. Of course, this might also be to make up for all the times Heiji calls him Kudo, which has nearly given Shinichi away multiple times. Heiji is concerned for Shinichi when he gets into trouble and life-or-death situations. They are as close as real brothers, both being detectives who have romantic feelings for their childhood friends. When they're caught solving a case together, it's not unusual for their minds to move in sync; because of this and several other factors, they maintain a sort of friendly rivalry with each other. However, they are both all business when a case gets serious. Heiji has, on several occasions, declared himself to be Shinichi's best friend.

Shiho's English mother, [[Elena Miyano]], and Japanese father, [[Atsushi Miyano]], were both important researchers for the Black Organization. They both died in what other members of the Black Organization described as an accident while Shiho was very young.

While Akemi lived a normal life, Shiho was sent to America as a small child to go to school and was groomed to finish her parents' research on [[APTX 4869]].<ref> File 384-386 Volume 38 File 2-4</ref> Most of her time in America was lonely; she ate lunch alone, and was otherwise isolated from her peers for being different. Despite the difficult social situation, Shiho was an academic prodigy, and by the age of thirteen she was working as a highly ranked scientist for the Black Organization.<ref>Akai started infiltrating the Black Organization five years ago. He did so by becoming Akemi’s girlfriend in order to get close to Shiho and use her influence to get in. Her only real friend was Akemi, who only involved herself in the organization to get Shiho out.

At some point she might have visiting the Mermaid Island, where there supposedly lived a woman rumored to be immortal.

Shiho was about 18 years old when she developed the most current incarnation of the experimental test compound [[APTX 4869]]. Although it was not her intended purpose<ref>Manga Volume 18, File 9, page 9</ref>, she discovered that it could be used as a poison to kill without leaving any traces of itself in a body. While researching its effects, Shiho noticed that one of her lab mice had become younger after being given the drug instead of dying. Meanwhile, the Black Organization started using APTX 4869 to commit untraceable murders.

After the death of her sister at the hands of [[Gin]], she rebelled against the Black Organization, refusing to complete any work for them until she received a satisfactory explanation for why her sister was killed. Instead she was confined to a small room to await her execution. She took an APTX 4869 pill she had pocketed earlier to commit suicide, but shrank instead to elementary school child age. That allowed her to slip her handcuffs and escape via a rubbish chute. Her only hope was her suspicions about the potential survival of [[Shinichi Kudo]], the only unconfirmed death of the human trial subjects. She fled towards Shinichi's house, but collapsed in the rain outside the house of Shinichi's neighbor, [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]]. ==Personality==
Initially, Shiho was very cynical, which was reflected in her valuing her own security above idealistic principles of justice. She also did not wish to become close to others. While attending school in America, she ate lunch alone<ref>[[Volume 30|Volume 30, File 303: "Genta's Misfortune"]]</ref>. It was only by repeatedly approaching her that the [[Detective Boys]] and [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] finally became her friends. Shiho was also untrusting of others in general, and preferred to put on an expressionless, cold mask while bottling up her pain and sadness. Shiho's views about death have been complex and at times contradictory. She was prepared to likely kill [[Ki'ichiro Numabuchi]] with APTX 4869 as part of her tests, but on the other hand, she detested the Black Organization's use of APTX as a killing tool and Conan labeling her as a murderer.
Her fascination with her work seems to be stronger than fear for the organization, while she was still a member, since she risked changing Shinichi Kudo's data to avoid him getting killed before she could study him.

As Haibara, she shows sharp observation, keen thinking process and ability to make logical deduction; however, unlike Conan/Shinichi, she often lacks specialized knowledge or experience to make the conclusive argument to solve the case. Moreover, to avoid attention, she stays quiet, which Conan often takes the spotlight. Haibara does not identify herself as a "mystery freak" as Conan. In the few cases that Haibara leads the investigation, she shows that she can be a great detective on her own, although this is not her prime speciality. Haibara has also known to read some mysteries like
Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot novels and PD James's Cordelia Gray novel but it is not known whether she enjoys the genera.

Shiho has the ability to sense when Black Organization members are around, which she characterizes as their unique "smell" or "pressure". So far, her sense only detects Black Organization members and not people with malevolent intent generally,<ref>She has only claimed the sense for Black Organization members, and she does not seem to have the same magnitude reaction around people who aren't, such as case culprits, although she may be generally suspicious of them;</ref> however, it doesn't always trigger when Black Organization members are present.<ref>This is the case especially when the Black Organization members aren't focusing or in an aggressive mood. [[Gin|Like]] [[Vermouth|other]] Black Organization members, Shiho has also demonstrated a strong tolerance for pain. During the initial apoptoxin transformation, Shiho does not scream despite the sensation of 'bones melting', as doing so would likely have ended in being caught and killed when someone came to check on her. It is unclear if she even passes out at all, and regardless she manages to recover quickly enough to escape through a chute/ventilation shaft before her captors know anything happened.

Additionally, she climbs barefoot up a chimney while extremely sick from the effects of a cold combined with [[Baijiu]]-induced regrowth. She then crawls back to the chimney after she is shot multiple times by Gin on the frigid, snowy roof. She still maintains consciousness after falling down the chimney over a story in height and experiencing the agony of reverting back to Ai Haibara. Nowhere during this ordeal or her rescue afterwards did she cry from the pain. Shiho also handled the painful side affects of being reverting back to an adult with a [[prototype antidote]] better than Shinichi.

==Plot overview==
===Prior to Escape===
After being orphaned by the death of [[Atsushi Miyano|her]] [[Elena Miyano|parents]] at a young age, Shiho was groomed to take over their [[APTX 4869]] research project. She was educated overseas in America before returning to Japan at or before she was 13. She became a high ranking member, codenamed Sherry, in the Black Organization's internal drug development division.<ref>Conan Drill page 237</ref> When she was about 13,<ref>Five years before present timeline</ref> undercover [[FBI]] agent [[Shuichi Akai]] began dating Shiho's sister [[Akemi Miyano]] in order to use Shiho's rank to his advantage while infiltrating the Black Organization.

During the 5+ years Shiho worked in the Black Organization lab, Akemi was Shiho's lifeline to normalcy and her primary emotional support within the darkness of the Black Organization. Akemi would arrange meetings with Shiho in restaurants and such to chat about current happenings, and Shiho would sometimes tell Akemi about her Black Organization activities, although it appears she did not go into much detail.<ref name="Akemi Meeting">Volume 18, File 10, Page 15</ref> Akemi would also send Shiho floppies of pictures of her travels and friends which Shiho would quickly look at. During this time, Shiho accidentally mixed up the disks and mailed a disk of extremely sensitive information back to Akemi by mistake. The disk eventually would up in the hands of Akemi's professor friend, Masami Hirota.

[[Image:Investigation_Kudo's_house.jpg‎|thumb|left|170px|Search team were sent to Kudo's house to investigate.]]Closer to the beginning of the current timeline, Shiho Miyano was ordered to test the most recent, yet still incomplete, version of APTX 4869 on [[Ki'ichiro Numabuchi]], a failed assassin. Shiho received the data about him, but he managed to escape the Black Organization before she could test it on him. Shiho fled the Black Organization herself soon after, so her superiors never found a substitute test subject. [[Shinichi Kudo]] wound up being the first "guinea pig" of APTX 4869 according to [[Gin]], who decided to use the newly approved poison to kill him after Shinichi witnessed a Black Organization transaction.

Unaware of the APTX 4869's rare deaging side effect when they used it on Shinichi Kudo, the Black Organization ordered a search for him because his body had not been found. As the creator of the drug, Shiho was part of the team who searched Shinichi's house twice to confirm his death. She began to suspect Shinichi's transformation when she noticed his clothes from primary school had disappeared between the first and second searches. Sometime earlier, one mouse dosed with APTX 4869 had become younger, so she suspected something similar had happened to Shinichi. Shiho did not want the Black Organization to kill such an interesting "test subject" before she could examine him, so Shiho confirmed Shinichi as deceased so the organization would not look into the matter further. Shiho later met with Akemi and told her that she went to Kudo's house in Beika city to "look after something".<ref name="Akemi Meeting"/>

==== Akemi's robbery plan and death ====

Meanwhile, Akemi Miyano wished that she and Shiho could leave the Black Organization. The Black Organization itself was in an awkward position as Akemi had been in love with the FBI spy, Shuichi Akai, whose true allegiance had since been uncovered when Shiho was about 16.<ref>Two years before present timeline</ref> The Black Organization could not simply kill Akemi because that would jeopardize the loyalty of Shiho, who was valuable to the Black Organization's research efforts. Exasperated, the Black Organization came up with a trap for Akemi; they told her that she could leave the Black Organization with Shiho if she would rob 10 billion yen from a bank for them. The Black Organization expected Akemi to fail, which would give them the excuse to eliminate her while keeping Shiho loyal; however Akemi, with a team of robbers, succeeded in obtaining the money.

In the event of her success, the Black Organization had designed the second part of the robbery plan so that Akemi's assistants would kill each other or be unintentionally killed by the unwitting Akemi. However one accomplice had fled, forcing Akemi to use detective [[Kogoro Mouri]] to find him. After her first meeting with Kogoro, Akemi met with Shiho again.<ref name="Akemi Meeting"/> Akemi had not told Shiho about the robbery plan, but it seems that Shiho's detection of the Black Organization aura from Akemi<ref>Mitsuhiko's Mystifying Forest case (some translations do not have this line correct)</ref> and gossip had made Shiho aware that Akemi had done something dangerous. Without telling Shiho about the robbery, Akemi redirected the conversation to [[Conan Edogawa]], whom Akemi said was brilliant and had the composure of an adult. This conversation likely helped Shiho deduce Conan's identity as the missing Shinichi.

Later, after all the accomplices were killed, Akemi planned to hand access to the money over to Gin and Vodka at the shipyard.<ref>This is based on the manga version of this case. The anime alters this scene</ref> Instead, Gin murdered Akemi. A newspaper took a photo of the crime scene that included Conan looking downcast. Shiho later identified Conan using it.

Shiho already resented the Black Organization for using the incomplete APTX 4869 for killing purposes, but the news of Akemi's death was the final straw that induced Shiho to boycott her research until she received an official explanation for why her sister was killed. She was aware that Akemi pulled out a robbery, but Shiho might have suspended that there was more to the story. The Black Organization refused, and faced with the possibility that Shiho could defect or do something else drastic in revenge, decided to cut their loses by executing Shiho.

===Escape from the Black Organization===
Awaiting her execution, Shiho was handcuffed to a wall in a sealed room that also featured a garbage chute too small for an adult to fit in. With no other way out, she took a pill of APTX 4869 she had pocketed to commit suicide before she could be killed, but instead she shrank into a six- or seven-year-old girl. In her new, smaller body, she slipped her hand free of the cuff and used the garbage chute to escape the sealed room. She then attempted to reach Shinichi Kudo's house, hoping he might be able to help her. Exhausted, she collapsed in front of Kudo's house, where she was found by [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]], who eventually adopted her.<ref>Manga Chapter 179: The Girl Made Of Lies</ref> After this, Shiho Miyano took up the role of Ai Haibara. In [[Reunion with the Black Organization]], Conan and Haibara find Gin's [[Cars#Porsche_356A|Porsche]] by chance. Conan plants a tracker and transmitter in the parked car and eavesdrops on Gin and Vodka when they return. Gin calls an agent named [[Pisco]] and discusses part of a plan to kill someone at a mourning party that will take place at the [[Haido City Hotel]]. Gin tells Pisco he can use the [[APTX 4869|"experimental detective"]] if needed. Gin then finds the tracker and destroys it, believing Sherry placed it there because he also found a single red hair that Haibara inadvertently lost while Conan was planting the bugs. Gin then warns Pisco about Sherry. Although initially reluctant, after hearing Pisco has APTX, Haibara decides to go to the party to try to obtain a sample. Pisco, who knew Shiho as a child, recognizes her as Haibara, kidnaps her using chloroform, and confines her in a wine storage room in another part of the hotel. He doesn't get the opportunity to tell anyone about his discovery because the police are rounding up suspects for the mourning party murder and he is one of them.

After Haibara wakes up, Conan tells Haibara to drink some [[baijiu]] in order to escape. While waiting for the change to occur, she copies some APTX data from a computer Pisco left behind onto a floppy disk. Haibara turns back into Shiho and changes into some leftover janitor clothes that Pisco left behind in the room as part of his disguise. Gin and Vodka break into the storage room looking for Pisco, but Shiho manages to hide herself just before they arrive by bracing her body in the chimney. Unfortunately, Gin hears her breathing and finds another one of her hairs. Instead of simply shooting her in the chimney, however, he goes to the roof to wait for her to finish climbing.

After exchanging some banter, Gin demands to know how Shiho escaped from the locked chamber room. Shiho remains silent, so Gin shoots her several more times non-fatally, hoping she will crack. Eventually, Gin and Vodka realize she won't talk, so Gin prepares to kill her. Conan meanwhile has arrived and darts Gin in the back with his tranquilizer watch. Using the voice changer to disguise his voice, Conan orders her to get back to the chimney. Vodka shoots Shiho just as she reaches the chimney, so Shiho falls down awkwardly.

In the fireplace, Shiho reverts back into Ai Haibara while Pisco watches. He congratulates her for having made so much progress on the APTX, whose effects he has just witnessed. He tells Shiho he was a close friend of the Miyanos while they were still alive, and they told him much about the drug they were developing. He knew her from when she was a baby, even though Shiho does not remember him. Pisco prepares to shoot her, but Conan stops him by distracting him at the last minute. Conan manages to trick Pisco into setting himself and the room on fire, and carries Haibara out of the room on his back before Pisco can find them again. Gin comes down the chimney and confronts Pisco. Before Pisco is able to tell Gin the truth about Shiho and APTX 4869, Gin kills Pisco for accidentally getting his picture taken in the act of murder during the mourning party.

Conan sneaks Haibara to Agasa's beetle and gives her his jacket. Haibara then lies to Conan about losing the disk of APTX data she copied.<ref>The bloody disk is on the bottom of the stack shown in Volume 25 File 9 (Chapter 251), Page 8 and Episode 188.</ref> Worried that the organization knows that she has shrunk, Haibara tells Conan she must leave the city. Agasa tells Haibara that her identity is safe because he eavesdropped on the conversation when Gin killed Pisco by using the tracking glasses Shiho dropped when she fell down the chimney.

On a camping trip in Gunma, the Detective Boys run across a murderer burying a body and are chased to a cabin in the woods where the killer and the victim had been staying. The murderer bars the door and sets the cabin alight with the children inside. The strength of the children is not enough to open the door and Ayumi passes out from the smoke. With Conan nowhere nearby, Haibara takes a temporary [[Antidote (Prototype)|antidote]], borrows the victim's clothing, and uses the murder weapon - an axe - to break down the door. Mitsuhiko, not realizing who she is, films her carrying Ayumi from the burning cabin and mails the video to Kogoro hoping he would find their savior. Bourbon logs into Kogoro's computer and sees the video, precipitating the events on the Bell Tree Express.

To counter [[Rei Furuya|Bourbon]] and [[Vermouth]]'s plan to capture or kill Shiho aboard the Bell Tree Express, Conan, with [[Subaru Okiya]] and [[Yukiko Kudo]]'s help, devised a plan to keep Haibara hidden and force the ignorant [[Kaitou Kid]], only present to scout ahead for a future heist, to disguise as Shiho and confront Bourbon. Bourbon wound up confronting "Shiho" and fell for the thief's disguise because Haibara told Kaitou Kid what to say. In the confusion that followed, Subaru Okiya separated the rearmost carriage from the train, which then blew up because Vermouth had planted explosives there intending to kill Shiho to prevent Bourbon from capturing her alive. Kaitou Kid escaped in the nick of time, but the rest of the Black Organization, sans Vermouth, now believe Shiho Miyano is dead.

After the death of Shiho's parents, Akemi became Shiho's only true ally within the darkness of the Black Organization. Through direct conversation and mail, Akemi showed Shiho the normal side of life that Shiho was unable to experience. Akemi would often admonish Shiho gently to do things normal for her age, such as encouraging her to get a boyfriend. Akemi's death had enough emotional impact to convince Shiho to betray the Black Organization by boycotting her research, even though she knew the act of defiance would likely result in her own death. Indicating that her sister was more important to Shiho than her research. Shiho greatly misses Akemi. In the non-canon [[Movie 5]], Shiho's desire to hear Akemi's voice again, even if only a message on a phone answering machine, was used by Gin and Vodka to nearly pinpoint Shiho's location.

====Elena Miyano====
Elena died when Shiho was young, so Shiho doesn't remember much of her. Elena left tapes for Shiho for each of her birthdays. Some of the messages are serious and mysterious, but others are more lighthearted and reveal things about Elena's past. It is clear from the tapes Elena loved Shiho very much, and Shiho misses her mother in turn and takes comfort in hearing her voice.

Shiho's feelings toward her late father is unknown, but she does show interest in seeing the house where he grew up.

====Wakasa Rumi====
It seems like Haibara was "triggered" by Rumi in the Burning Tent Murder Case when "prosthetic eye" was mentioned. Haibara then questioned whether Rumi got problems with her right eye's vision. But after the case was solved, she told Conan that she liked Rumi and that Conan shouldn't speak ill of her. Their relationship has been peaceful ever since.

Shiho Miyano and her older sister, [[Akemi Miyano]], were born into the secret crime syndicate "The [[Black Organization]]". Her English mother, [[Elena Miyano]], and her Japanese father, [[Atsushi Miyano]], were both scientists working for the Black Organization on a secret project. While Haibara was young, both her parents died in what was claimed to be an accident. While Akemi lived a normal life, the highly intelligent Shiho was groomed to take over her parents' research. She was sent to the United States for education at a very young age, and then later came back to Japan to finish her parents' secret project, "Silver Bullet".<ref>Manga [[Volume 38]], Files 2-4 (384-386) Manga [[Volume 78]], Files 1-7 (818-824)</ref>. By the age of thirteen she was working as a scientist for the Black Organization<ref>Akai started infiltrating the Black Organization five years ago. Shiho was about 18 years old when she developed the experimental test compound [[APTX 4869]]. While researching its effects, she discovered that it could be used as a poison to kill without leaving any traces of itself in a body. She then noticed that one of her lab mice had become smaller instead of dying, though she did not report that effect. Meanwhile, the Black Organization started human trials, using APTX 4869 to commit untraceable murders. Unaware of the drug's rare side effect when they used it on [[Shinichi Kudo]], the Black Organization ordered a search for him because his body had not been found. Shiho and her team searched Shinichi's house twice to confirm his death, however it lead her to suspect Shinichi had shrunk instead. However, Shiho confirmed him as deceased so the organization would not look into the matter further and kill him after all.

Shiho was unhappy that the Black Organization was using the incomplete APTX 4869 for murder, as she believed that was not the drug's intended purpose. When Shiho learned of Akemi's death, but was given no explanation, she decided to boycott her research until the Black Organization gave her an explanation. Instead, the Organization confined her in a small room to await her execution. With no other way out, she took APTX 4869 intending to commit suicide, but instead shrank. In her new, smaller body, she escaped and attempted to reach Shinichi's house. To prevent the knowledge of her transfiguration from being discovered, Shiho and Professor Agasa create her alias ''Ai Haibara''. As Ai Haibara, she attends [[Teitan Elementary School]] with Shinichi Kudo's shrunken form, [[Conan Edogawa]]. Following her first adventure with the [[Detective Boys]], she reveals her true identity as the developer of [[APTX 4869]] to Conan.<ref>Manga Chapter 178: Code Name Sherry</ref>, and also accurately deduces Conan as Shinichi in the shrunken form, though her deduction is based on prior knowledge of her research and investigation of Shinichi Kudo. Conan protests her presence,<ref>Manga Chapter 179: The Girl Made Of Lies</ref> but as time passes, he accepts her as a friend, though her cynicism and secretive air still rail him at times. Although she does not think too highly of the Detective Boys' immature antics, she has come to value them all as close friends.

Haibara is one of the few major characters in Detective Conan who does not have a potential romantic interest. Previously, she developed a crush on Conan/Shinichi (whose romance with Ran is a huge part of his character), and she is aware that Mitsuhiko likes her; however, it is unlikely that either of these relationships will materialize. Haibara has a calm and cool personality, sarcastic wit, and high intelligence. When freshly escaped from the Black Organization, she was cynical and pushed others away. Haibara has since defrosted by embracing her new child life and has established strong relationships with Conan, the Detective Boys, Agasa, and Ran.

As Ai Haibara, she speaks and acts older than she is supposed to be, which results in the Detective Boys referring to her as "cool" or "mature". This is emphasized by her impressing general knowledge, even in areas without relation with sciences (such as theology or history<ref>[[Mushrooms, Bears, and the Detective Boys|Episode 212: Mushrooms, Bears, and the Detective Boys]] where she explains the religious myth of the Fall</ref><ref>[[The Evidence That Didn't Disappear|Episode 233: The Evidence That Didn't Disappear]] where she explains the death of Marie-Antoinette</ref>); and on occasion she is so forceful and demanding that she can stun adults several decades above her current physical age into submission. Haibara is generally a loner and misses her older sister, Akemi, greatly (in the film ''[[Countdown to Heaven]]'', she would call her sister's old apartment just to hear her voice on the voicemail). Her greatest fear is being caught by the [[Black Organization]], and she is especially terrified of [[Gin]] and [[Vermouth]]. She tries to keep Conan from doing reckless things that may give away their identity, though often she is surprised by his actions which usually result in gaining the information he needs while also keeping their identities secret. However, whenever Conan is reckless in regards to keeping his identity from Ran, Haibara is the one who plans ahead in order to keep him from being revealed. Despite spending most of her time alone at the lab, Haibara shows excellent understanding of reading people's mind. Examples include Haibara deducing that Ayumi had a crush on Conan, figuring out Conan was about to tell his identity to Ran, or understanding the anger of Kobayashi when confronting Inspector Shiratori. Thanks to this ability, Haibara can remind Conan about the situation and make him act appropriately, not to reveal his identity.

Conan's class receives a new student named Ai Haibara. She acts rather cold and reserved when the Detective Boys try to befriend her, and Genta notices she's looking at Conan suspiciously. She tells them where she lives but Conan fails to realize it's at Agasa's home (Tokyo blocks are not numbered in sequential order and Conan has never had reason to learn Agasa's mailing address due to their being neighbors).

After school, a boy named Toshiya asks the Detective Boys to find his missing brother. The Detective Boys along with Haibara investigate Toshiya's house and finds a painting of [[Wikipedia:Natsume Sōseki|Natsume Sōseki]]. Toshiya reveals that before his brother disappeared, a woman, who had an interest in that portrait, approached Toshiya's brother. The Detective Boys search around town to ask whether anyone has seen the woman or Toshiya's brother. Conan notices that a man was using a counterfeit ¥1000 and realizes Toshiya's brother was actually kidnapped and forced to help create counterfeit bills. After following the man along with the clues Toshiya's brother left behind, they are able to apprehend the organized crime group and save Toshiya's brother.

On the way home, Haibara reveals to Conan that she is a former member of the Black Organization, with the code name "Sherry". She actually betrayed the group and escaped with the use of the APTX 4869, which caused her to become a child. She reveals that she once accidentally sent a floppy disk containing data on the Black Organization to her older sister, and the disc is now in the possession of her sister's professor, Masami Hirota.

Agasa takes Conan and Haibara there to retrieve the disk, only to discover that Hirota has been murdered. The suspects are Hirota's three students who visited that day. Conan reveals the culprit to be a man named Akira Shirakura; Shirakura after bludgeoning Hirota to death and tied the answering machine cassette tape around the key to the room which rewound when a call was made, subsequently dragging the key into the room. As evidence, Conan reveals that Shirakura's fingerprints should be found on the tape. After seeing Conan's amazing display of logic after she had given up on the case herself, Haibara breaks down and asks Conan why he could not save her sister, Akemi, from the Black Organization. Conan finally makes the connection that the "Masami Hirota" who Gin killed was actually Shiho's sister, and sympathy for Haibara's attitude stirs in him. The disc is taken into police custody, but once it is released to them Haibara attempts to read the files off the disk—only to have [[Night Baron|a virus]] delete all the data.

In Episode 176-178, Conan encounters Gin and Vodka again. Haibara is kidnapped and confined to a wine cellar by the Black Organization member [[Pisco]], but she escapes before Gin and Vodka arrive by drinking [[baijiu]] to turn back into an adult. Gin anticipates her actions and intercepts her on the roof. Gin shoots her repeatedly, hoping he can force her to explain how she escaped from the Organization. Conan prevents Gin from killing her by shooting the man with his [[Stun-Gun Wristwatch|tranquilizer wristwatch]]. Conan tells Haibara to jump into the chimney, and Vodka shoots at him, but Conan gets away. Gin purposely shoots himself in the arm to stay awake. Inside, Pisco almost kills Haibara, but Conan rescues her after tricking Pisco into accidentally causing a fire. Gin kills Pisco for failure before Pisco's able to tell him the truth that Shiho Miyano has deaged into a young girl. Worried that the Organization is after her, Haibara decides to leave the city. Conan anticipates that Gin will predict her next move as leaving Tokyo, so it will be better if she does the unexpected and remains in Beika. Unknown to Conan or Haibara, [[Vermouth]] saw Haibara at the party and uses her expert disguise skills to get closer to Haibara and Conan in order to confirm Haibara's identity as Sherry and then kill her.

While Conan is in the hospital contemplating admitting his identity to her, Haibara enters and points a gun at his head, saying that the Black Organization has found out about her due to an unknown agent being present at the Pisco incident. Because of this, Professor Agasa is held hostage and, in exchange for his life and a chance to return to the Black Organization, Haibara is required to terminate all the links she had in her child identity. However, when she pulls the trigger a bunch of flowers come out, showing that the story was just an act. Still, she uses this story as her point: both Haibara and Conan cannot reveal their identities no matter the situation, in order to prevent such a tragedy from occurring.

During that night, Haibara explains her plan to disassociate Conan from Shinichi in Ran's eyes. She has Conan take a [[prototype antidote]] for APTX 4869 and then disguises herself as Conan. For the rest of the arc, Conan returns as Shinichi while Haibara is present as Conan, thus creating the illusion of Shinichi and Conan existing at the same time, disproving that the two are the same person.

Whatever plan Vermouth might have had is completely interrupted by the bus being hijacked by random criminals and the presence of two FBI agents that have been tracking her: [[Jodie Starling]] and [[Shuichi Akai]]. Haibara detects Vermouth's presence on the bus. She becomes so afraid that the Detective Boys, Conan, and Agasa will be killed because of her that she decides to commit suicide, staying deliberately in the bus whose explosion was imminent. Only Conan's quick thinking saves her, and he asks her to not run away from life. However, those events make her remain anxious for several days.

Vermouth finally launches her plan to kill Shiho. She prepares a distraction to lure Conan away so that Haibara is alone at Agasa's. Taking advantage of the fact that Haibara has practically become ill from fear, she calls as Dr. Araide to tell Haibara she is taking her to the hospital because she has been unwell for so long. The eavesdropping FBI agent [[Jodie Starling]] arrives first to protect Haibara and starts driving her towards the shipping yard where the FBI have laid a trap for Vermouth.

In a complicated turn of events, Vermouth reveals she already thwarted Jodie's trap, and then shoots her. Haibara then reveals herself to be Conan; Yukiko had helped with his disguise while Conan sent [[Heiji Hattori]] to participate in Vermouth's distraction. The real Haibara then shows up which distracts Conan long enough for Vermouth to dart him with his own stun-gun watch. Just as Haibara is about to be killed, Ran, who had suspected Jodie of being untrustworthy and decided to spy on her, jumps from Jodie's car trunk and protects Haibara. Vermouth is unwilling to kill either Conan or Ran because they had saved her life in the past. Part of the reason why she originally did not tell the rest of the Black Organization about Haibara's true identity is likely because they would find out about Conan too and then silence him and everyone around him as well.

Before Vermouth can come up with another plan, the other FBI agent, [[Shuichi Akai]] arrives and forces Vermouth to flee with Conan as a hostage. Vermouth dials [[anokata|the boss]] of the Black Organization to lie to him about why she was injured. Conan overhears the number and threatens to give it to the police for analysis unless Vermouth promises that she will give up on trying to kill Haibara. Vermouth consents and escapes.

The exchange suggests that Haibara is withholding information because she fears Conan will make a rash move.

Not long after Akai's death, Conan hears fresh intel from the [[FBI]] that a new [[Black Organization]] agent called [[Rei Furuya|Bourbon]] is looking for Shiho, which Conan keeps secret from Haibara. As Conan and Haibara investigate a normal case, Haibara feels that an organization member is around. The organization member which she felt is implied to be one of the innocent suspects, [[Subaru Okiya]]. Conan invites Okiya to live in Kudo's house since Okiya's apartment was burnt to the ground. Okiya appears in other cases later on, including at the Haido mall where the rest of the Black Organization gathered to chase a rumored sighting of a [[Scar Akai|scarred Shuichi Akai]]. Although Okiya is trusted by Conan and Agasa and kind to Haibara, she remains frightened of him. Later, some of his actions lead her to believe he might be someone she knows and she comes to trust him more, even attempting to uncover his identity when she thought he was asleep.

Later, when Haibara is forced to revert to Shiho using a [[temporary antidote]], a video of her as an adult is sent to the Mouri Detective Agency by Mitsuhiko which Sera, Okiya, and Amuro find out about. Because of this, Haibara is later targeted by a plot concocted by Vermouth and Bourbon aboard the Bell Tree Express Train. Bourbon is revealed to be Amuro and Haibara learns that he knew her parents. Bourbon was hoping to capture Shiho alive, but Vermouth's modifications to his plan which were designed to kill her led to Shiho supposedly being blown up on the train. The Shiho Vermouth and Bourbon thought was killed was really [[Kaitou Kid]] in disguise, Conan having forced him into the plan. Because of this, all of the Black Organization besides Vermouth think Shiho is now dead, and Vermouth is unable to reveal the truth to the rest of them without also compromising Conan, Haibara and their deaged condition against her wishes.

====Akemi Miyano====
The death of Akemi still affects her. It was the death of her sister that led to Haibara's escape from the organization, because no one would tell her the reason. She became aware of the robbery Akemi pulled after her death, but probably suspended that there was more to the story.

In movie, she missed her dearly and kept calling Akemi's number at her apartment just to hear her voice, fully aware that the Black Organization might wiretap and trace to her location. It took extreme measure from Conan to make Haibara abandon this thought.

====Atsushi Miyano====
Dr. Miyano was Haibara's father. He passed away when she was barely a year old. Her feelings toward her father is unknown, but she does show interest in seeing the house where he grew up.

====Elena Miyano====
Elena passed away when Shiho was a baby. Even though Shiho/Haibara has accepted her passing for a long time, being able to hear her voice via recorded tapes calmed Haibara down.

Both are de-aged by APTX and have almost equal levels of intelligence, which makes Haibara and [[Conan]] close confidants and more sympathetic to one other than most other characters. Conan is one of the few people in front of whom she has shown any signs of weakness, such as breaking down over her sister's death. Ai Haibara has romantic feelings for Conan/Shinichi, although she never truly admits to it (due to her assumption of Conan loving Ran). Haibara expresses a lot of interest in Conan's personality, intelligence, and sense of justice. If Conan is in danger she is willing to throw away her life to save him, overriding fears and concerns for her own safety that would ordinarily paralyze her. Similarly, Conan has saved Haibara's life more than once when she would have sacrificed herself for his and the [[Detective Boys]]' safety. Haibara also often enjoys teasing Conan which Conan takes in good stride. Conan is oblivious of Haibara's feelings and sometimes finds it difficult to deal with her sarcasm and impudent, cold nature. Although close on many matters, they still don't fully trust one another with information about the Black Organization out of concern for the safety and feelings of the other.

Despite their actual ages, Haibara often acts more like a mother to the professor, constantly reminding him to watch what he eats. Early on, she is cold and distant towards Ran, even more so than she is to most other people. Ran believes that it is because Haibara hated her,<ref name=Net>[[The Mystery in the Net|Episode 246-247: The Mystery in the Net]]</ref> though in truth it is because Ran reminds Haibara strongly of her dead sister.

After Ran notices Haibara is not feeling well and carries her to safety during a case, Haibara finally properly introduces herself to Ran, and they slowly became friends. Because Haibara finds that Ran resembles her older sister, Akemi Miyano, she takes special interest in protecting her. Assuming that Conan has romantic feelings for Ran, Haibara feels jealous of her and suffer from considering herself as less attractive than Ran. She even implies that Ran would be similar to a dolphin, when she would only be a shark coming from the cold depths of the sea, indicating that she cannot compete against her<ref>[[The Mystery in the Net|Episode 246-247: The Mystery in the Net]]</ref>. Once when Haibara had a cold and Ran came to bring her some food, Ai pretended to be asleep and Conan said she wasn't being considerate for Ran's good actions towards her. Haibara thought to herself that Conan doesn't understand a thing, but she doesn't want him to anyway, hinting that she has actually romantic feelings towards Conan/Shinichi and is jealous due to his feelings for Ran.

====Akai Shuichi/Subaru Okiya====

The first time [[Subaru]] appears, Haibara felt a strange feeling toward him and thought he is a member of the Black Organization. However, the feeling kept coming and going. In later episodes, Haibara doesn't seem to hate him so much anymore. She even tries to uncover Subaru's scarf to check something behind his neck, probably noticing some small machines made by Professor Agasa.

Currently, although Akai/Subaru has known Haibara's secret identity, Haibara doesn't know Subaru's identity, nor does she know Akai was her deceased sister's boyfriend. Both Akai/Subaru, Conan, and Agasa are keeping such information a secret from Haibara. At one point, Haibara questions if Akai is a "lolicon."

Haibara knows [[Dai Moroboshi]] as her sister's boyfriend. She deduces that Dai approaches her sister just to collect information about the Black Organization. She remembered him giving her a promise to protect Akemi. Later on, she meets a [[Scar Akai|guy]] similar to him in [[The Jet-Black Mystery Train]] and wonders how he got the scar on his face.

====Heiji Hattori====
Heiji is one of the few character who know Conan and Haibara's secret identity, as well as the effect of APTX 4869. In general, Heiji and Haibara rarely meet each other, and Haibara dislikes his hot temperament. However, on more than one occasion, Haibara trusts Heiji to keep the secret of the drug and to keep Conan/Shinichi safe when Conan temporarily reverts back to Shinichi.

Haibara also shows a mischievous side towards Heiji. At one point when Heiji (kinda) confessed to Kazuha, Haibara used the recorded speech as her ringtone.

== Background ==
[[Image:Miwako and her father.png|thumb|left|150px|Miwako and her last moment with her father]] Eighteen years ago, when she was still at elementary school, Miwako lost her father, [[Masayoshi Sato]], in a traffic accident as he was about to deliver a bank robber to the police - an event that marked her life. She eventually became a police officer on her own and now works alongside [[Inspector Megure]], [[Ninzaburo Shiratori]], [[Kazunobu Chiba]], and especially [[Wataru Takagi]] in the Tokyo police district.

Although Sato generally follows order from Megure, at one point she secretly asks Takagi investigate a case and not reports to the police department on their whereabouts, which almost leads to their fatality.

Sato's first love interest was [[Jinpei Matsuda]], whom she only got to know briefly due to his death in a bomb explosion. Although she denied it at first, she finally acknowledged her feelings for Takagi, which made him the outcast among the other jealous police officers who were interested in her, especially [[Ninzaburo Shiratori|Shiratori]], at first (although he supports their relationship now). == Personality ==
Sato is considered one of the most dangerous members of the police, being not at all afraid to get tangled with dangerous men in fights, which she almost always wins. She has a strong sense of justice, and hates criminals who take lives for an idiotic reason. She does have a softer personality, in which she is very friendly with the [[Detective Boys]], and especially [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]], whom she considers is a big help in difficult cases. When in action, however, Sato can be quite reckless and daring, which has earned her the title 'The Silver Witch' among car racers on Mount Fuyuna due to her driving style.<ref>Manga Chapter 663: The True Identity of the Witch</ref>. Sato can also get highly emotional if cases involve people close to her, like Takagi and Matsuda.

== Plot overview ==

Miwako's first appearance was in Episode 130, and in manga File 190, where she is seen trying to arrest the culprit's accomplice along with other police officers, but failed.

This case is the very beginning of the long and enduring love story between Miwako Sato and her fellow police officer, [[Wataru Takagi]].

One night, Sato and her best friend [[Yumi Miyamoto]] from the traffic department have a drink together. In her drunken state, Sato unknowingly reveals to Yumi the person that she has feelings for. However, when she wakes up, she doesn't remember the exact details of what she has told her friend. The next day, Sato arrives at the Police Headquarters and meets up with detective [[Wataru Takagi|Takagi]], who is talking to the [[Detective Boys]] at the time. She asks Takagi who the children are, only to be mistaken by them that she is his girlfriend. However, both of them deny this. She also wonders if Takagi has heard anything from Yumi, without knowing that her friend has already told the police officer about what happened the previous night, saying that the person whom Sato likes is "someone from the first investigation division".

Later, the bank manager from a recent bank robbery case comes to see the police. During his phone call to his wife, everyone hears her sudden scream. Sato immediately drives Takagi, Conan and the manager to their house, only to discover the wife's stabbed body instead. The person to be in charge of this murder case is Inspector [[Ninzaburo Shiratori]], a police officer who has just been promoted recently. Sato sarcastically congratulates Shiratori on his rapid promotion, and jokingly comments that he may as well consider her "a possible wedding match", without knowing that this statement has raised a major misunderstanding from Takagi, who thinks that she really has affection for the new police inspector.

With the help from Conan, the trick and the identity of the killer are uncovered, and the case goes to an end. When all is done, Shiratori invites Sato to have dinner with him at a restaurant that he knows, but she turns down the offer, saying that French cuisine isn't her favorite. She instead invites Takagi to go out and eat ramen together. Just as the misunderstanding earlier is about to be cleared and Takagi finally has the chance to be with Sato, a drunken [[Juzo Megure|Megure]] suddenly appears and suggests to them to go out for a drink with him at a bar. Sato immediately approves of the idea despite the other invitation to Takagi, thus raising another serious misconception: Detective Sato has special feelings for Inspector Megure.

In the course of chasing down Higashida, a suspect in a murder case, Sato corners him in a public bathroom and manages to cuff him to herself to end any further escape attempts. However, she soon discovers that she has accidentally cuffed them around a toilet pipe, meaning neither of them were going anywhere. When Higashida protests his innocence, and that he has to catch a plane the next day to attend his daughter's wedding, Sato relies on Takagi and the Detective Boys to find the true culprit without alerting headquarters to the embarrassing situation - headquarters, meanwhile, launches a hunt for the apparently missing Higashida, Sato and Takagi. While Takagi and the Detective Boys are able to unveil the true culprit, proving Higashida innocent, they also discover that the building that Sato is trapped in is due to be demolished by Agasa using the Tropical Rainbow device, an experimental bomb that detonates with a multicoloured explosion. Conan manages to subdue Agasa before he hits the button using his [[Power-Enhancing Kick Shoes|power shoes]], and Sato is cut free - though naturally the embarrassing situation was found out. Sato also finds herself having to explain to Takagi that she only sees Megure as a father figure - much to Takagi's relief.

It is the last day before the case of Sato's father's death - a murder/robbery - hits the statute of limitations, allowing the culprit to leave scot-free. Sato intends to solve both this case and a serial arson case currently ongoing in the city, promising Takagi a request if they are successful. In the course of investigating, Sato gives Takagi her father's handcuffs to use, being as hers had to be broken to release her during the [[Metropolitan Police Detective Love Story 2|Innocent Suspect case]]. However, the arsonist attacks Takagi and uses the cuffs to restrain him to a set of window bars in his final target building. As midnight approaches, Sato - unaware of Takagi's predicament - sits down with the culprit of her father's murder, and once midnight has passed he reveals to her the entire story. At this point, Sato reveals to him that given that time outside Japan does not count towards the statute of limitations, and he had spent time in Italy since the crime, the time limit had been extended some. While the suspect knew this, upon returning to Japan from Italy a flight delay due to bad weather caused his arrival time to fall just after midnight the day after the scheduled time - meaning there are in fact still twenty-four hours in which he could be charged, and he had just given a full confession. He is promptly arrested.

Sato is then informed of Takagi's situation, and returns to the warehouse where the arsonist - subdued by Conan - has struck. Takagi has managed to escape by breaking the window bars off the frame - being unabl;e to bring himself to break Sato's father's handcuffs - and he collapses in Sato's arms, but ultimately survives. Once he has recuperated, he uses his request to ask Sato out on a date - which she doubles with tailing a suspect, to Takagi's annoyance.

In these episodes, Sato and Takagi's feelings for each other are explored. Sato chose randomly and incidentally landed on Shiratori for her omiai (arranged date). Meanwhile, Sato realized her feelings for Takagi. Before she and Shiratori can kiss, Conan stopped them with Takagi and [[Tomoaki Araide|Dr. Araide's]] help.

Sato and the rest of the department are undercover at the Tokyo Spirits' victory parade, having received a fax alluding to a bombing from three years ago that targeted police. She comes across the Detective Boys and Professor Agasa, and then Takagi, also undercover. However, Sato abruptly slaps him and scolds him, since as a new addition to the Beika police he did not have to be undercover. Privately, she is upset that his diguise makes him resemble [[Matsuda Jinpei|an officer]] who apparently died in the prior case. Takagi returns his disguise to his car, shortly before a bomb explodes underneath the car. Sato attempts to pull him out, suffering burns on her hands, before Miyamoto informs her that Takagi had in fact gotten away. With the help of Conan and the Detective Boys, it is determined that the allusions to the previous case and the bombs are all false flags and this is in fact a robbery targeting the postal service - the police organise a sting and the offenders are taken in.

Later, Sato suggests to Takagi that they should cancel an upcoming date as everyone who Sato cares about, including her father, an old teacher, a club senpai and (though she does not say out loud) the officer that died in the previous bombings, seems to disappear and she would prefer not to live through such pain again. Takagi struggles to reveal his feelings, and ultimately - in front of the Detective Boys, Shiratori, Miyamoto, and a significant portion of the police department - agrees that their relationship should remain professional, much to the audience's chagrin. Though Takagi tries to get her attention as she walks away, Sato merely waves.

During this case, Sato was having many flash backs of her former crush, Jinpei Matsuda, who was killed during a bombing incident. When the bombing started to involve more familiar police officers (including Shiratori), she became very worried for Takagi. When Takagi and Conan were trapped in an elevator with a mercury lever bomb, Takagi told Sato that he and Conan would have to remain and die with the bomb to get the name of the location of a much bigger bomb. She tried to force her way through police to get to Takagi, but failed. However, the bomb was disabled by Conan at the last second. Later after apprehending the bomber, she chased and attempted to kill him, being fully taken in with the impulse of revenge. At the last moment before she would have killed him, Takagi tackled Sato and even smacked her in the face to make her regain her senses. Takagi and Sato then almost kissed, but the arrival of Inspector Megure broke the moment.

Sato and Takagi had agreed on going out to a spa as soon as a difficult case (involving a serial killer whose cases are about to caducate) that they were working on (alongside Megure, Shiratori and Matsumoto) was resolved. Takagi gets very fired up and decides to work harder than usual; their seniors, however, see it as a terrible signal since officers who behave like that often end up dying in the line of duty, which greatly worries Sato. This bad omen almost becomes true when Takagi ends up being shot, with only a mahjong tile he carried in his pocket saving him from death. Sato is greatly relieved when he survives, and they ''finally'' can share a kiss.

Takagi is kidnapped by a mysterious man who mistakes him to be [[Wataru Date]] (a deceased police officer and Takagi's former mentor) who had made the kidnapper's daughter commit suicide. He is bandaged on a plank of wood and there is a bomb under it. Sato saves Takagi from getting killed by the bomb, and the duo kiss again.

During ''Captured in Her Eyes'', Miwako was a target of a serial killer. She thought she was safe, but when she and Ran went to the bathroom, a blackout in the hotel occurred. A gunman then came into the bathroom, and she jumped on Ran to protect her. However, she was shot several times and put into a coma. This incident caused a large deal of grief for Ran and Takagi, even going as far as to make Ran completely lose her memories. She was given by doctors a 50% chance at surviving due to one bullet stopping extremely close to her heart. Luckily, she survived.

Since their first meeting, Takagi was revealed to have strong romantic feelings towards her, but it was unknown if Sato felt the same way as she was shown to be quite oblivious to his feelings for her. However as time went on, their relationship slowly grew and they soon became more closer towards each other as Takagi learned more of her past, including the death of her father. Eventually, Sato finally realized her true feelings for [[Takagi]] when she was nearly force to marry Shiratori. Their relationship gradually develops as the series continues. However their relationship became threatened when Sato revealed she still hadn't completely gotten over the death of her former love, Jinpei Matsuda. However, after finally confronting the man who killed him and after being comforted by Takagi, Sato was finally able to move on with her life and renew her relationship with Takagi. At present, Takagi and Sato are very much in love, having kissed at least thrice.

Although Shiratori, initially, had a crush on Sato and attempted to marry her, she views him only as a friend. It is later revealed that the main reason Shiratori had a crush on her was because he believed her to be the "girl of destiny" who changed his life, but later it turned out that the said girl was [[Sumiko Kobayashi]], who bears an extreme physical similarity to Sato. Once this is revealed, Shiratori stops chasing after Sato's affections, and has become very friendly to her.

* Sato drives a [[Cars#Miwako_Sato|red series 6 Mazda (Ẽfini) RX-7]]. It used to be white, but she painted it red so it would be more visible in the fog.
* Sato has a habit of shrieking while drifting without pulling the handbrake, as she feels that shrieking helps make it easier. But she finds it embarrassing, though. This habit caused the "Mountain Witch" story to happen, as people reported the the witch would drift using a white FD and scream really loud.
* Sato is a fan of [[Lupin III]] and has stated that he was her first love.
* Sato dislikes any shiny and expensive jewelry. This fact was used by Yumi to trick some of Sato's admirers to buy expensive jewels for her that Yumi herself finds nice. However, Sato currently wears a ring that Takagi had bought for her, not realizing that he intended it to be an engagement ring.
* Sato dislikes expensive restaurants, and once denied an offer made by Inspector Shiratori to go eat at a French cuisine.
* A running gag in the series is how whenever she and Takagi go on a date, they are stalked by other police detectives who have crushes on her. Previously, this 'Miwako Sato's Line of Defence' was led by Inspector Shiratori.
* A script Error in the English Dub of [[Movie 4]]: [[Captured in Her Eyes]] referred that Sato died from the shot in the restroom (which, in fact, she does not and remained critically injured in hospital until her fate is known at the end of the film). This creates continuity error, as beyond that point, others characters in the Dubbing version continued to make reference that she died until the news of her recovery reaches the policemen at the end of the film.
* Sato is bad at drawing.
* Sato, Takagi and Yumi are the only Police Officers to take Conan seriously, usually treating him as an equal.
* Her last name Satō (佐藤) is written with the characters for 'help' and 'wisteria'. Written with different characters, Satō (砂糖) can also mean sugar. In a flashback showing the first encountering of her and Takagi, he uses this as a pun and refers to her as 'Inspector Sugar'.
* Her first name Miwako (美和子) is written with the characters for 'beautiful', 'peace' and 'child'.
