== Background ==
Judging from [[Shuichi Akai]]/[[Subaru Okiya]]'s descriptions, Rum appears to have high rank in the organization and is very close to [[The Boss of the Black Organization|the Boss]]. Later on, [[Ai Haibara]] remarks that Rum is second only to the Boss of the Black Organization, suggesting that he/she is their second-in-command. While she had never met Rum herself, she had overheard other members of the BO give seemingly contradicting descriptions. Rum's identity, sex and mission are currently unknown.

Rum was involved with the death of [[Kohji Haneda]], [[Case from 17 years ago|17 years ago]]. Gin implies that it is an incident in which Rum had screwed up.



== Appearance ==

Rum has a damaged eye which has been replaced with an artificial eye.<ref name=908p16>Manga [[Volume 86]], File 4 (908), pg 16: "Betting With Your Life..."</ref> It is unknown which eye was damaged.<ref name=908p16/> So far, characters with damaged eyes have been shown to either have a scar over the eye (e.g. [[Kansuke Yamato]]) or wear sunglasses (e.g. [[Hyoue Kuroda]] and [[Magic_Kaito_Chapters_not_yet_included_in_a_Volume#The_Phantom_Lady|Gozu]]) where one lens is drawn tinted so the damaged eye is not visible. (Recently in the manga Kuroda's lens has become see through). The anime treatment of the "false eye and glasses"-type characters shows their false pupils not contracting or enlarging like their working eye. However, there is no guarantee that Rum will follow either of these character models.

Various Black Organization members have given conflicting accounts of his/her overall appearance and build. Some say Rum is a strongly-built man, some say he/she looks feminine, and some say he/she is an old man.<ref name=906p3>Manga [[Volume 86]], File 2 (906), pg 3: "A Kind Aunt"</ref> The conflicting descriptions of Rum's appearance suggests that he/she doesn't present himself to others in a straightforward fashion.

Shuichi Akai (as Subaru Okiya) calls [[Jodie Starling]] and [[Andre Camel]] to the [[Shinichi Kudo|Kudos]]' house. He informs them that the undercover [[Central Intelligence Agency|CIA]] agent [[Hidemi Hondou]] reported to him that a new organization member is on the move. As she only sent three letters "RUM", Akai deduces that it was done in a hurry. He recalls having heard the code name a few times when he was still infiltrating the organization, and notes that the member seems to be really close to the boss. Akai also tells them to report this back to [[James Black]], while emphasizing that their new threat is someone even more important than [[Gin]].

His/her characteristics differ depending on who is describing him/her. Some say he/she is a strongly-built man, some say he/she looks feminine, and some say he/she is an old man. Others believe that all of these are just descriptions of body substitutes Rum uses. Haibara also says there is one characteristic that is the same for all stories about Rum -- one of his/her eyes is damaged and has been replaced with an artificial eye.

They then encounter a murder case where all three suspects happen to have characteristics like Rum's: Kuramichi Habanaka a 40 years old strong-built man, Ronpei Sakaba a 31 years old feminine-looking man, and Denji Shibakaru a 63 years old man.

While not directly related to Rum's plot, this case showed how several different people could see the same person and describe them as completely different. The culprit in this case flees down the stairs past various people of different heights and past objects of different colors, which resulted in the [[Detective Boys]] giving contradicting eye witness accounts. To further liken the situation to Rum, Genta even claims that he saw the number two written on the culprits clothes. After Conan and Subaru solve the murder of Kunihisa Hiyama, they realize they can solve the dying message of [[Case from 17 years ago|Kohji's case]]. They decipher the meaning of the missing letters on the mirror of [[Kohji Haneda]]'s room. Kohji's dying message from 17 years ago was "ASACA RUM", so Rum might be involved in his death and the death of [[Amanda Hughes]], a big fan of Koji's, along with the disappearance of [[Asaka]], her bodyguard.

Since the dying message was "P T O N", the answer to it must contain all of the missing letters of "U MASCARA"

Conan decides that the missing bodyguard [[Asaka]] is most likely Rum.

After the case was over [[Masumi Sera|Masumi]] speaks to [[Mary]] and says that the only information that [[Volume 90#Soul Detective Murder Case|Gaito Hotta]], the soul detective, had was that he believed Asaka to be a woman. He was going to pretend that he had summoned Kohji's spirit and have it say that a woman was going to kill him. According to Masumi, the culprit said that someone saw Asaka holding "that small mirror".

Conan considers that if Asaka is Rum, then perhaps what Haibara said about being feminine refers to looking girly on the outside but strong like a man on the inside. If Rum had been a bodyguard 17 years ago, then their age must be pretty high. Conan also ponders the possibility that Mary is Rum after having shrunken, being girly yet strong and older than she looks.

[[List of Black Organization related characters#Rokumichi Hado|Rokumichi Hado]], a famous artist coming back from a seventeen year hiatus, announces a new song called "ASACA". Because of the spelling and the timing, Conan and [[Subaru Okiya|Subaru]] go to the concert hall to investigate. There they encounter [[Rei Furuya|Bourbon]] and [[Vermouth]] in disguise as [[Azusa Enomoto]] who are trying to get in as well. Their presence suggests that the Black Organization decoded Kohji's dying message mirror and are investigating for the same reasons as Subaru and Conan. By the end of the case, both groups determine that the song being named "ASACA" is only a coincidence and not related to Rum or Kohji's murder.

Vermouth was about to execute Curaçao because her brain recorded facts inconvenient to the Organization, but Rum's voice stopped her. He appointed Curaçao as his/her right-handed agent.

Haibara's list of potential descriptions "strong man, feminine man, and elderly" all suggest Rum is a man, although Conan has entertained the possibility Rum is a woman by suspecting [[Mary]].

Conan currently suspects [[Asaka]] of being Rum. [[Volume 90#Soul Detective Murder Case|Gaito Hotta]], who witnessed Asaka holding a small hand mirror, believed Asaka was a woman. Hotta's reliability is questionable, because the hand mirror—typically a woman's accessory—that a witness saw Asaka holding could have been Kohji's.

Conan implicates the missing bodyguard [[Asaka]] as Kohji Haneda's and Amanda Hughes' killer from 17 years ago. The encoded dying message left by Kohji using a broken mirror seems to point to Asaka being Rum. While it unclear whether Asaka is Rum or merely related (the extent of Kohji's knowledge of Rum and Asaka and how he came by it is unclear), the Black Organization itself believes the decoding "ASACA RUM" is correct by being paranoid about things named "Asaca" with a C connected to a 17 year ago timeframe. [[Volume 90#The Soul Detective|Gaito Hotta]] assumed Asaka was female. Gin refers to Kohji Haneda's murder as "a job which Rum had screwed up seventeen years ago..."<ref name="file953"/>

Conan considers the possibility [[Mary]] is Rum after being shrunken. She is feminine but tough on the inside like a man and perhaps older than she looks, which is one way of interpreting Haibara's description of Rum. But later in the manga she was revealed to be the mother of Sera, Shuichi and Shukichi and the wife of Tsutomu Akai.

==== Hyoue Kuroda ====
[[Hyoue Kuroda]] is chief of the first division of Nagano Police and first introduced at the end of file 913. He is a middle-aged strong-built man with white hair that makes him look older. Kuroda has a bad right eye surrounded by extensive facial scarring which he hides behind a darkened glasses lens, but the eye is shown to be closed similar to Kansuke's eye socket and not an artificial eye like Rum is described as having. The circumstances behind the loss of his right eye are unclear, but it likely involved burning or caustic chemicals considering the extent of the scarring. Kuroda's favorite drink is black tea, which is actually a dark red color.

In file 925, Haibara said to Conan that [[Shiho Miyano#"Black Organization sense"|she hadn't felt the Black Organization "aura" from Kuroda]]. She had only gripped Conan's shoulder because Hyoue's face and expression were really scary. In fact, she implied Kuroda couldn't be Rum as he saw her and should have noticed she resembles [[Shiho Miyano]]. If he were Rum, he would've broken into [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]]'s house, yet this didn't happen.

==== Rumi Wakasa ====
[[Rumi Wakasa]] is the new Deputy Homeroom Teacher at Teitan Elementary school for Year 1 Class B. Her personality seems to be that of a really clumsy and incapable teacher. She approached the [[Detective Boys]] on the grounds that she is scared of the old warehouse at the school and needed them to come with her. However, once she was out of sight of the Detective Boys, her personality changed dramatically to that of a skilled fighter with a scary face. Most likely her name is meant to resemble "ASAKA RUM", the code from [[Kohji Haneda]]'s death, with the addition of a W and an I. In a recent case, Haibara seems to react to Rumi in a similar way that she does when she senses a BO agent. Haibara also noticed that Rumi could not see out of one of her eyes. However at the end of the case Haibara seems to defend Rumi to Conan who has become suspicious of her.

Rumi is unlikely to be Rum because the [[Black Organization]] has no motive to allow someone to use a name which draws attention to "Rum" and the [[Case from 17 years ago|Kohji Haneda case of 17 years ago]]. There is no apparent benefit the Black Organization would gain from publicly flaunting the names "Asaka" or "Rum", which can be linked to Kohji's murder. The Black Organization appears to want to cover up anything related to Rum and Asaka since they have sent [[Vermouth]] and [[Rei Furuya|Amuro]] to investigate possible references to it, and someone with significant reach is actively scrubbing the internet of information from the past murder case. It would also not make sense for the vital number two of the Organization to flaunt their identity where [[FBI]] agents have worked previously and risk being captured. In addition Haibara directly interacted with Rumi, yet Rumi did not appear to recognize Haibara either, instead focusing her attention on Conan.

==== Kanenori Wakita ====
[[Kanenori Wakita]] is a wanderer who has recently taken up a job at Irohazushi as a sushi chef, and prides himself as an Edokko (Tokyo-ite) detective. He has an eye patch over one eye and claims he injured it recently which has resulted in him currently being a waiter rather than a chef because of the use of knives. Conan briefly considers him a suspect. Wakita is now also a disciple of Kogoro.

[[Kansuke Yamato]] is a strong young man, but limps like an old man because he uses a cane to compensate for an injured left leg. Kansuke has long hair pulled back into a ponytail which could be considered feminine if he let it down. Kansuke's left eye is also damaged, but he does not use an artificial eye. '''Gosho Aoyama disclaimed Kansuke Yamato from being Rum in two animal crossing hints.'''

==== Taka'aki Morofushi ====
[[Taka'aki Morofushi]] is a young man with a feminine physique. So far, there's been no indication he has a prosthetic eye.

==== Shukichi Haneda ====
[[Shukichi Haneda]] is a young man with no indication of a prosthetic eye. He has seen both Conan and Haibara twice, giving him an easy opportunity to find Sherry and report it to the Black Organization. In File 972 he was revealed to be the middle brother of [[Akai family]].

==== Chikara Katsumata ====
[[Chikara Katsumata]] is a famous shogi player who currently holds the [[wikipedia:Osho (shogi)|Osho]] title. Since he is a character introduced in file 899/900 in the Rum arc, he is a potential candidate. As a male, he fits the liquors-for-men codename pattern, and he appears to be old enough that he could be involved in Kohji's murder 17 years ago. Traditional japanese clothing for men is considered to be very old fashioned (versus the western suit) and would age him up in the eyes of those who do not know he wears a kimono because he plays shogi professionally.<ref>Yumi mistook Shuukichi for a Rakugo performer because of his kimono</ref> Other shogi players such as [[Shukichi Haneda]]<ref>Glasses off, Attempted hair taming, Clean shaven, folding fan in 946</ref> and [[Koji Haneda]]<ref>According to Ai, he likely carried the "Put on Mascara" handmirror</ref> meticulously care for their appearance<ref>Ai said so. File 948, pg 5: "The clenched scissors"</ref> because they are photographed often, and so they possess or carry beauty products more typically associated with women, like handmirrors and folding fans. Assuming Chikara possess beauty items like his peers, someone who knew might assume he was feminine. It's unclear if Chikara has a fake eye due to his limited number of appearances. Chikara is conveniently linked to shogi which the dead Koji Haneda was interested in.

==== Kiyonaga Matsumoto ====
[[Kiyonaga Matsumoto]] is a middle-aged strongly-built man whose left eye has a scar over it.

==== Muga Iori ====
[[Muga Iori]] is a butler of [[Momiji]], a high school student. He has been shown to be rather stealthy when meeting Conan and Heiji during a case. Megure and Takagi were also not actively aware of his presence and didn't notice his later disappearance from the crime scene. As a butler, Iori is expected to have physical strength and his long hair can make him look effeminate. However, it is unknown if he has any eye issues.

==== Tsutomu Akai ====
[[Shuichi Akai]]'s father could be Rum although it's a low possibility. He was involved with [[Kohji Haneda]]'s murder but wasn't an FBI agent according to [[Shuichi Akai|Subaru Okiya]].

=== Three descriptions for one person ===
Various members of the Black Organization all disagree about Rum's overall appearance. For this to be the case, Rum must not present himself/herself to others straightforwardly. There are several possibilities why this could be:

* Rum can disguise himself/herself well.
::Fairly straightforward as far as explanations go, Rum could appear to different agents with different faces and builds leading to confusion. Disguise is a potential skill Rum could have. He/she is the number two of the Black Organization and likely close to [[The Boss of the Black Organization|the boss]], so he/she has a need for security and secrecy and is probably also multi-talented like most other code named agents. That said, there is currently no evidence that Rum has attempted a disguise or has been involved in any plots where disguise is necessary.

* He/she has features of all three types leading to different conclusions.
:: Rum might have features of all three types of builds so that each witness comes to a different conclusion about his appearance depending on what they personally emphasize. As an example, Kansuke Yamato is a strongly built man, uses a cane like an old man, and his ponytail could give someone the impression he/she is feminine. If Kansuke tended to only appear to others in shadowed environments, then it's possible he/she could be mistaken for an old man or even a woman when viewed in profile.
:: The confusion may not stem solely from appearance. In [[Volume 89#Department Store Stabbing Case|The Department Store Stabbing Case]], the three [[detective boys]] give conflicting statements of the same stabber because they each saw different things depending on their vantage points and personal prejudices. [[Metropolitan Police Detective Love Story 4]] and [[Kobayashi-sensei's Love]] are cases with a similar theme. Similarly, members of the Black Organization with different backgrounds might come to different conclusions depending on the context they encounter Rum in.
:: If members of the Black Organization only interact with Rum by video-phone conversation, they might come to different conclusions about his appearance depending on how he/she speaks. If Rum uses old style Japanese like an elderly person might, has a deep voice like that of a well built man, but is excessively polite and uses pronouns like {{nihongo|watashi|私}}, then three different conclusions of his overall appearance can result.

* The code name Rum is shared by more than one person.
::Also self explanatory, but requires each Rum persona to have a fake eye - a pretty unlikely coincidence if each of their eyes was lost in a separate accident.
::In a [[postcards|postcard]] from Gosho in 2016 he said that Rum was one person.

* Rum uses body doubles.
::Rum using body doubles with different builds was suggested by Haibara to explain why different Black Organization agents had different impressions.<ref name="906p3"/> It does not explain the fake eye common between them, unless these doubles were required to wear one.

=== Contradictions about the fake eye ===

Prosthetic eyes are usually subtle, as shown in the picture on the right, and can be easily mistaken for some other type of ocular problem such as lazy eye. That implies there is some distinct reason why everyone agrees that Rum has a prosthetic eye while disagreeing about other obvious facts. There are several possibilities why this might be:

* The prosthetic eye Rum uses when talking to other members of the Black Organization is very obviously fake
::While such an obvious fake eye would be detrimental in public because it would draw attention, Rum may prefer using a non-subtle prosthetic when in the presence of the rest of the Black Organization. For instance, Rum could use an obvious fake for the purposes of intimidation or to draw attention away from the rest of him/her so that he is not well remembered. Rum could also use a mechanical gadget in place of his/her eye that augments his/her vision.

* Rum's prosthetic eye is a rumor everyone knows.
::One possible reason everyone agrees about Rum's fake eye is because it is an oft-circulated fact that he/she has one. He met Ran, when he started in kindergarden, and spotted strange things that his father figured out where preparations to kidnap Ran. The kidnapping was failed, and Ran and Shinichi formed a friendship, when Shinichi defended her from the bullies.

The story begins when Shinichi takes his childhood friend [[Ran Mouri]] to a theme park, [[Tropical Land]], to celebrate her victory in a recent karate championship. During the course of their visit, Shinichi ends up solving [[Roller Coaster Murder Case|a murder case]]. He separates from Ran to follow a man in black, [[Vodka]], who was blackmailing a company president. He didn't notice when another man in black, [[Gin]], sneak up behind him and knocks him out with a baseball bat. Gin decides to test an experimental untraceable poison, [[APTX 4869]], on Shinichi to ensure that his death couldn't be traced back to them. After escaping from well-meaning but skeptical park security, with nowhere else to go Shinichi runs home. He there encounters into his next door neighbor and close family friend, [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]]. He convinces Agasa of his identity and head inside [[Setting#Kudo_Residence|Shinichi's home]] to discuss the next move. Agasa warns him that he must keep his identity secret because the [[Black Organization]] will kill him and others associated with him should they discover the truth.<ref name="e2">[[Company President's Daughter Kidnapping Case|Episode 2: Company President's Daughter Kidnapping Case]].</ref>

== Personality ==
At the beginning of the series, Shinichi is already well-known as a brilliant young detective, the "Savior of the police force", for solving many difficult cases the professionals could not.<ref name="e1">[[Roller Coaster Murder Case|Episode 1: Roller Coaster Murder Case]].</ref> He is extremely intelligent, and even from a young age was very intuitive and observant. Prior to his transformation, Shinichi enjoyed being in the spotlight and was rather arrogant, reveling in making local headlines and receiving fan-mail. Throughout the series, Shinichi's predicament causes him to gain a sense of humility. Shinichi still keeps his flair for the dramatic (like his mother) that can be seen every time he sets out a deduction in pieces building to a climax.

Despite his popularity with the masses and his schoolmates, Shinichi has very few close friends. He is close to Ran and Agasa, and after deaging, he befriended Heiji, Haibara, and to some extent the other Detective Boys. Another reason for his lack of close friends was because his arrogant personality was a negative turn-off to many of his classmates and even teachers, making it hard to befriend him. Even with his close friends (one being older than him), Shinichi doesn't hesitate to call them "idiot", instead of calmly explaining his reason for doing or not doing something, sometimes causing arguments between him and Ran.

Shinichi also had a tendency, since elementary school, to have an air of being the "distant, cool guy". While he is a truly good and heroic individual, he doesn't make it known to others that obviously, and will make some "deductive reasoning" for why he did such a thing. His insensitive nature is also horrible, which was shown most prominently during the Holmes' Revelation Arc, when Ran started crying because she believed that Shinichi not telling her he was in London meant that he was indifferent to her feelings for him. However, instead of trying to comfort her, Shinichi repeatedly asked her about the [[Yukiko Kudo|strange woman]] she met, and told her to pull herself together.

Despite his intelligence, Shinichi is rather dense when it comes to love or romantic subjects, though perhaps not to the same extent as [[Heiji Hattori]]. He struggled to confess his love for to Ran, even after he knew her feelings (as Conan), and temporarily returned to his original body in the Desperate Revival Arc, he was about to confess to her, but chickened out at the last minute. After several failures, finally succeeded in [[Holmes' Revelation|London]]. However, he was revealed to be an amazing "wingman" in Episodes 253-254.

== Appearance ==
Shinichi is a 174 cm<ref name=CD41 /> (5'8.5") Japanese teenager with a thin, athletic build. He has pale skin and a dark brown/black hair with a cowlick in front and distinctive tuft in the back. Shinichi bears a striking resemblance to his father, [[Yusaku Kudo]] minus his father's mustache and round glasses. Shinichi has blue eyes in the manga (a trait shared by all the characters), and they are blue in the anime as well.

Shinichi is right handed and right footed, but he is good with both feet because of his soccer skills.

Shinichi often appears in his high school uniform, but he also wears a suit and tie or regular clothing depending on the occasion. When Conan turns back into Shinichi by using [[baijiu]] or a [[temporary antidote]], Shinichi will wear whatever appropriately sized clothing he can find at the time. He was also very popular with the girls as he was handsome not to mention a high school detective.

Shinichi is very skilled as a detective, often earning him comparisons to [[Sherlock Holmes]]. Shinichi has acquired various nicknames because of his prowess, such as the "[[Wikipedia:Heisei|Heisei]] Holmes" and the "Detective of the East". He has a keen eye for details, and can spot any unusual aspects in a case that most people tend to ignore or not take into account. In the english version his motto is "Only one truth prevails". He repeatedly demonstrates the ability to recall every detail of an investigation or other topics he cares about, and may have a photographic memory to manage such perfect recall so consistently. Shinichi's fastidious attention to detail allows him to notice minor inconsistencies in crime scenes and suspect testimony, and using astute logic he uncovers the reasons behind those inconsistencies in order to link them to the crime. Shinichi has extraordinarily broad and deep knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases, something he likely acquired from incessant reading as a child. Only his father [[Yusaku Kudo]], and the current [[Kaitou Kid]], [[Kaito Kuroba]], regularly surpass him.

Besides intelligence, Shinichi also has an amazing athletic ability, partially derived from playing soccer, his favorite sport. Shinichi is an extremely skilled soccer player, having been professionally scouted while only in middle school, but he chooses to stay at the amateur level. He initially played to hone his reflexes and often juggles a ball to clear his mind, but he is also an enthusiastic fan of the sport in its own right.<ref name="e1"/> In order to defend himself and others from criminals, Shinichi has perfected a signature, powerful precision kick to knock out criminals using soccer balls or whatever substitute is handy. Shinichi's kick is accurate over long distances and he is capable of mentally reckoning the angle of impact necessary to rebound a soccer ball off a wall and strike an attacker from behind. He is also good at skiing and snowboarding.

Aside from soccer, Shinichi exhibits a knack for handling firearms due to his father taking him to shooting ranges from time to time. During the Clocktower Heist, Shinichi is able to shoot and dislodge the support beam of a giant projection screen, which Kaitou Kid had placed in order to fool a crowd of onlookers, with a single shot from a moving helicopter. Additionally, in [[Movie 2]] Conan shot a gun at Ran and the criminal holding her hostage with impeccable accuracy; in doing so, he reminds her of Shinichi.

Shinichi is nimble as well as strong. In the manga, he is capable of considerable acrobatics, jumping great distances and swinging from tree to tree to escape onlookers.<ref>Shiragami case</ref> The anime and movies augment Shinichi's athletic abilities in addition to what is shown in the manga. == Plot overview ==
Because the main plot revolves around the fact that Shinichi has become 'Conan' and is forced into hiding, Shinichi is rarely in the series as himself. However, Conan is frequently shown calling Ran using his voice-changing bow tie to sound like Shinichi and sending/receiving text messages from her with "Shinichi's" phone. In these instances, it can be said that the character of Shinichi, albeit in the body of Conan, is appearing, since these phone conversations and text messages allow Shinichi to be himself, however briefly. The below instances however, are actual appearances of Shinichi as well as flashbacks from before the series began.

The real Shinichi hides in the forest until he can clear his name. While driving home from the case, the group is stopped by another murder which Shinichi and Heiji investigate together, despite increasing pangs that warn of his imminent reversion to Conan. After the case is resolved, Ran tries to stop Shinichi from leaving, saying she has something to tell him. Shinichi stops her, saying "According to my deductions, what you have to say and what I have to say are the same thing." Ran seizes his hand while he is transforming back into Conan, and though Haibara knocks her out with Conan's wristwatch, she refuses to let go of his hand. Ai provides a second prototype pill for the return journey, but Conan uses it while Ran was pursuing him in London. During that trip, Shinichi answers Ran's hurt feelings over his behavior with the fact that he cares for her and that he likes her; unfortunately, before she could respond or confess in kind, Shinichi has to vanish and becomes Conan again. Luckily for Conan, Shinichi's parents appear because Ai had expected him to use the second pill, and they provide him with an extra antidote to let Conan return to Japan. <ref name="f743" />

[[Yusaku Kudo|Yusaku]] and [[Yukiko Kudo|Yukiko]] Kudo are both aware that [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] is in fact Shinichi. His parents are even more famous than he is, with Yusaku being a famous mystery novelist and Yukiko being a retired actress who remains partially involved in the industry. They currently live in the United States and travel extensively, having left Shinichi in Japan on his own when he was fourteen. Though he sometimes finds his parents' carefree ways to be annoying, he loves them dearly. Yusaku is also a detective with the same keen eye for details, and similarly to Holmes' brother Mycroft, Yusaku always seems to solve a case one step ahead of his son.

==== Hiroshi Agasa ====
Although not related by blood, there is a strong family-like bond between Shinichi and [[Hiroshi Agasa]]. Agasa was the first to know about Shinichi's shrunk predicament and was the one to tell him to keep it a secret. Most of the gadgets that Shinichi has were made by Agasa to help Shinichi catch the criminals and solve the cases as Conan. He also knows about Shinichi's romantic relationship with Ran and sometimes teases him about it in front of her (when Shinichi can't do anything about it since he is Conan).

==== Heiji Hattori ====
When they first meet, Conan and [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] seem bound to become lifelong rivals, especially after Kudo beats Heiji in their first case. Even though Heiji discovers Shinichi's secret, he decides to keep quiet (though he often slips up and calls him Kudo in front of others). After Heiji realizes the truth, the two have become best friends, and consult one another on cases, developments concerning the Black Organization, and even their "girlfriends". They have solved many cases together, and Heiji is the person Shinichi turns to for advice or for confirmation regarding a deduction. Heiji has, on several occasions, declared himself to be Shinichi's best friend or brother.

Heiji still maintains some of his original feelings of rivalry, and gets annoyed if anyone claims Shinichi is better (or even equal), and will often go to great lengths to show that the "west" (Osaka) is better than the "east" (Tokyo). Shinichi usually starts off acting like he is disinterested in the frivolous competition, but may then become competitive himself if Heiji starts "winning" or someone bruises his ego. Others, like Ran and Kazuha, see them both as equally skilled detectives.

====Sonoko Suzuki====
Sonoko and Shinichi have known each other since childhood. Sonoko finds Shinichi's obsession with mysteries annoying and considers him to be an arrogant showoff.{{citation needed}} That being said, she acknowledges his knowledge and intelligence. Sonoko enjoys teasing him about his relationship with Ran, calling them husband and wife or boyfriend / girlfriend. Shinichi finds her attempts at attracting boys to be rather irritating. Sonoko is one of the few people who calls Shinichi by his first name with kun. Shinichi also calls Sonoko by her first name without including any honorific.

Indeed, it is a mystery just exactly what she feels for him, whether friendship or otherwise. Some people, such as [[Yukiko Kudo|Conan's mother]], have stated that she has feelings for Conan. It could be said that, because of their almost equal level of intelligence as well as similarities in their pasts (i.e. they're both victims of the [[APTX 4869]]), she finds it easier to talk to him. She loves to tease him or otherwise insult him, pointing out his weakness.

Despite the fact [[Toichi Kuroba|Toichi]] and Shinichi only met once prior to Toichi's death, it's worth mentioning that Toichi referred to Shinichi as his "older brother" and himself as the "younger brother". This is because Yusaku created and thus was the '''father''' of the moniker [[Kaitou Kid|Kaitou '''Kid''']], Toichi's secret identity. Toichi's son and successor, [[Kaito Kuroba|Kaito]], has also only crossed paths with Shinichi as Shinichi once, during the [[The_Gathering_of_the_Detectives!_Kudo_Shinichi_vs._Kaitou_Kid|Clocktower heist]]. Kaito thought Shinichi made the heist harder (and thus less boring) in [[Saguru Hakuba]]'s absence, and Shinichi found Kid's intention of 'stealing' the Clocktower in order to save it from demolition to be fairly admirable. Notably, neither of them saw the other's face.

In their next encounter, however, after Shinichi had become Conan, Kid disguised himself as Ran in order to steal the Suzuki Black Star pearl. When Conan cornered him on the Suzuki cruise ship, Kid suggested that he'd stolen all of Ran's clothes to impersonate her, and left her naked on the deck. While this ended up being a bluff, Conan was shocked and infuriated. In subsequent encounters between Kid and Conan, Conan displays a much more intense desire to capture Kid. In several instances he appears to be able to 'sense' Kid's presence; knowing Kid is close by often causes Conan to behave far more frenetically. However, in several instances, beginning with the "Big Adventure in the Eccentric Residence" case, when Kid does Conan/Shinichi a favor, such as saving Genta's life in the aforementioned case, Conan reciprocates by halting his investigation just shy of capturing Kid, thereby allowing him to escape unhindered.

== People who know Conan's real identity ==

There are only a few characters in the series who know Conan's real identity and none have betrayed Conan's identity to date. The main characters to know the secret are [[Hiroshi Agasa]], Conan's parents, [[Heiji Hattori]] and [[Ai Haibara]]. [[Vermouth]] also knows, but she has kept it a secret from the rest of the Organization to protect Shinichi because he had [[Vermouth_timeline#Golden_Apple_Case_.28Manga:_350-354.2C_Anime:_286-288.29|saved her life in New York]]. [[Eisuke Hondou]], the younger brother of C.I.A. agent [[Hidemi Hondou]], also knows and keeps Conan's secret. [[Kaitou Kid]] also knows Conan's identity in the movies, though it is not clear whether he knows Conan's secret in the actual anime and manga. However, Kid seems to know there is something unusual about Conan, as whenever he tries to publicly steal he usually reveals that he only wants to compete with Conan as thief and detective. [[Ran]] gets suspicious on occasion, but so far Conan has managed to trick her into thinking Conan and Shinichi are two different people. Finally, [[Subaru Okiya]] has seen Conan use Shinichi's voice with his bowtie voice modifier. Since Subaru Okiya is actually [[Shuichi Akai]] in disguise, this means that Akai knows about it as well.

"Shinichi" may also have come from "Shinichi Suzuki", a famous violinist. Shinichi Kudo plays violin.<ref>Ch 936 Ran mentions that Shinchi plays the violin very well but also mentions his tone-deafness</ref>

== Character inspiration ==
Shinichi's design was based off of Conan's. Gosho said Shinichi's hairstyle was designed in about one minute. He smoothed [[Yaiba]]'s hair and added a tuft modeled after the apostrophe hairstyle of Kabu from [[Wikipedia:Sally_the_Witch|Sally the Witch]]. The tuft on hair on the top of Shinichi's head comes from the character Shichimi in [[Wikipedia:Niji Iro Tōgarashi|Niji Iro Tōgarashi]]. Shinichi's speech habits were meant to be slightly rough like Joe from [[Wikipedia:Ashita no Joe|Ashita no Joe]] and [[Wikipedia:Touch (manga)|Touch]].<ref>File 865 Shounen Sunday Special Booklet</ref>
