He is a recently dispatched operative who specializes in deduction and intelligence gathering and frequently works with [[Vermouth]]. Rei poses as a private detective who first appeared as a waiter while helping a client with a case, and later becomes a waiter at Café Poirot and [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]]'s apprentice.

==Background==
Rei's past within the [[Black Organization]] is unknown, but it seems he has been tied to them for a while. He knew [[Shiho Miyano]]'s parents who died when Shiho was young suggesting that he has some involvement since he was a teenager.<ref name=824p5>Manga Volume 78, File 7 (824), Page 5: "Mystery Train: Final Destination"</ref> He was the rival of [[Shuichi Akai]] (alias Dai Moroboshi) who was [[Akemi Miyano|Akemi]]'s lover at the time.<ref name=824p5/> He had suspected Dai Moroboshi was a spy for the FBI which turned out to be the case.<ref name=824p5/>

Soon after Shuichi Akai's death, [[Hidemi Hondou|Kir]] called [[Jodie Starling]] to report that a new member of the Black Organization called Bourbon had been dispatched. Kir said that Bourbon's target was the escaped scientist Shiho Miyano and that Bourbon has excellent information gathering skills and keen insight.<ref name=622p4>Manga Volume 60, File 3, Page 4: "Red, White and Yellow"</ref> Later Tooru Amuro appears as a free-lance private detective who also maintains employment on the side that may aid in investigation, like his part-time job as a waiter at Ristorante Sundayrino. == Personality ==

Rei has a cheerful personality. He is also generous, bringing a plate of sandwiches for the detective agency bought with his money. In more serious situations, he seems to be patient, keeping calm even while others are abusing him. Although somewhat of a "cool type", he does not hide his emotions and is quite expressive. Like other detectives in ''[[Detective Conan]]'', he enjoys presenting his deductions about cases to others. Kogoro calls him "effeminate".

Rei has a darker side. He is manipulative, tricking others into performing certain actions so he can gather information. He favors using psychological traps and catching his enemies offguard. Rei can also be extremely cruel in the pursuit of goals. He planned to run over and hospitalize an elementary school teacher with his car in order to lure out FBI agents, and he would have allowed a suspect destroy his exonerating evidence in order to test Kogoro. Rei alternates between going out of his way to care about the wellbeing others and ignoring them when it is inconvenient. As Scar Akai, he saved Conan at the [[Detective Boys vs. Robber Group|Teito bank heist]], but neglected to inform Ran and Kogoro later when he noticed that Conan might have been kidnapped by a murderer in [[Detectives' Nocturne]].

[[Gin]] says Bourbon has a secretive personality like [[Vermouth]], and that no one can ever guess what he's up to or what he will do.<ref name=703p3/> [[Vodka]] says that Bourbon hates Shuichi Akai even more than Gin does, although a reason for this hatred is not given.<ref name=703p3/> Bourbon believes he is the only person capable of killing Akai.<ref name=703p3/> Gin said that if Bourbon found out Akai was alive, he would surely boast that his suspicion was correct.<ref name=703p3/> Gin and Bourbon probably don't get along and they don't seem to communicate with one another.<ref name=703p3/>

He has dark skin, lighter than, but closer to [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]]'s color and has dyed blond hair. He wears glasses at first, but it is unknown if he actually needs them because he was using them to conceal his identity at the time and takes them off midway through the case and has not had them on since. Unlike other Black Organization members, he dresses mostly casually and sometimes wears outfits with only a little black. This may be because he is undercover and is trying to blend in.

==Mission==
Bourbon's primary mission was to search for the escaped scientist [[Shiho Miyano]], which the [[CIA]] spy [[Kir]] heard about and informed the [[FBI]] of. He also had a second secret mission fueled by his hunch that his archenemy Shuichi Akai should not have died so easily;<ref name=703p3>Manga [[Volume 67]], File 7, page 3: "The Truth Amidst the Snowstorm"</ref> he received [[Anokata|the boss's]] permission to verify Akai's death. He approached the FBI as [[Scar Akai|an Akai lookalike]] by using [[Vermouth]]'s disguise help hoping to see if Akai was truly dead.<ref name=824p7>Manga [[Volume 78]], File 7 (824), pg 7: "Final Destination"</ref> He later apprenticed himself to [[Kogoro Mouri]] because Bourbon suspected the detective may be connected to Sherry.<ref name=827p16>Manga [[Volume 78]], File 10 (827), pg 16: "The key to solving the mystery"</ref> (Kogoro was previously suspected of being linked to Sherry because the [[Criminal Tracking Glasses|tracker]], [[microphone]], and gum combo Gin found on Kir's shoe after [[Black Impact! CIA infiltrator [[Hidemi Hondou|Kir]] manages to sneak away from the people watching her and report to [[Jodie Starling]] that a newly activated member called Bourbon has been dispatched to look for [[Shiho Miyano|Sherry]] and that he is very good at deduction and intelligence gathering. Jodie passes this information onto [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]]. After hearing that Bourbon is on the move, Conan looks concerned, but doesn't tell [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]] about him.<ref name=622p6>Manga Volume 60, File 3, Page 6: "Red, White and Yellow"</ref>

Before Bourbon appeared as Tooru Amuro, he disguised as [[Scar Akai|Akai with a large burn]] with [[Vermouth]]'s help. In this disguise, he approached the close friends of Shuichi Akai to gauge whether he was truly dead. Bourbon first used the disguise to approach [[Jodie Starling]] at [[Teito Bank]], then [[Andre Camel]] at [[Beika Department Store]], he also sends Kogoro a text message on his deduction of the current case using a borrowed phone from a bystander. Whether he did this out of concern for the hostages or his own well being is unknown.

Rei (under the alias Tooru Amuro) is hired by to-be-bride Hatsune Kamon to investigate whether her to-be-husband, Raita Banba, is cheating on her. As part of the investigation, Rei tells Kamon to have their pre-wedding celebration at the restaurant, Ristorante Sundayrino, where he works as a waiter. He purposefully drops some cake on Banba's pants trying to make Banba too embarrassed to approach women later. Banba complains about Amuro's "mistake", but Kamon tells Amuro it's alright to protect him. Banba later gets drunk, and Amuro has to point out his phone is ringing.

Banba goes to the bathroom to meet the person who called him, the detective Sanji Haruka, who Banba hired to find out if Kamon was cheating on him. Sanji had been following the wife and discovered her meeting with Amuro, so Sanji mistakenly reports Kamon is having an affair with Amuro. Sanji confirms Amuro has a matching voice by asking Amuro to repeat his order, a bourbon on the rocks.

Banba is furious at Amuro and begins to harass him; like shouldering him and knocking Amuro over in front of the other waiters. Later Kamon dies in a car fire that is ruled an arson, and Banba accuses Amuro of starting it because he is Kamon's lover. Amuro denies this and says that Banba may have been trying to disguise wounds he received while fighting with Kamon by tripping Amuro. Amuro then takes off his glasses and reveals himself to be a private detective hired by Kamon, not her lover.

After Amuro correctly gives his deduction that Sanji was a detective hired by Banba, Kogoro accuses Amuro of driving Kamon to suicide by telling her about her husband's shameless flirting, but Amuro denies contacting Kamon by phone. Amuro accuses Banba of being the murderer, which antagonizes Banba into to rushing him. Amuro dodges and trips Banba and asks Kogoro to hold Banba's legs. From the condition of the bottom of Banba's shoes and Amuro's detailed background investigation of Banba and Kamon, [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] is able to deduce that Kamon's death was really a suicide. Amuro continues to accuse Banba after more DNA evidence comes in, but Conan prevents his arrest by using [[Kogoro#Detective_Skills|Sleeping Kogoro]] to ask Banba a critical question that reveals he never stepped outside. Amuro challenges Kogoro's deduction, suggesting that maybe Banba used a [[Shuichi Akai|knit cap]] and [[Scar Akai|long windbreaker]] to disguise himself, but Sleeping Kogoro counters by pointing out the condition of Banba's shoes. Defeated, Amuro demands Kogoro explain the matching DNA, which he does, revealing that Kamon and Banba are identical twins, but Kamon had a chromosomal abnormality that resulted in her being phenotypically female. Humbled, Amuro explains the abnormality condition to those present which [[Juzo Megure|Inspector Megure]] confirms.

One day later, Amuro has started work as a waiter at [[Setting#Cafe_Poirot|Café Poirot]] below [[Setting#The_Mouri_Detective_Agency|Mouri Detective Agency]]. He asks Kogoro if he can be Kogoro's apprentice and whispers some unheard amount of money per case that he is will pay if Kogoro brings Amuro along with him. The amount thrills Kogoro into accepting Amuro's offer immediately. Conan mentally moans about how yet another bothersome person has appeared.

While Kogoro and the gang are watching a news report on a recent bank robbery, Amuro stops by with sandwiches from the Poirot after finishing his part time job for the day. After commenting on the robbery, Amuro reveals that he wants the scoop on Kogoro's newest case request after deducing from Kogoro's appearance and habits that Kogoro had a case. Kogoro gets a text from the client requesting that Kogoro switch the meeting location to the [[Setting#Cafe_Columbo|Café Columbo]], and Amuro goes with them after changing out of his work clothes. At the Columbo, Kogoro explains to Amuro the request was to find the locker a key belongs to. The client fails to show, so Amuro, Kogoro, Conan, and Ran go back to the Detective Agency to make sure the client didn't actually turn up there instead. When Amuro arrives at the agency, he and Conan notice someone had broken in and appeared to have intercepted the client while they were out. Stepping outside, Amuro explains his deductions to the rest of the gang and that the culprit is hiding in the restroom.

Before Amuro can open the bathroom door, a gunshot rings out, and Conan rushes in to find a dead man who apparently committed suicide with a gun and a taped-up crying woman. The woman's story is that the now-dead guy was interrogating her about the key and locker and committed suicide when Kogoro returned early, but Amuro and Conan suspect she is lying and may have murdered the man.

Amuro questions the woman a little, and Megure comments to Kogoro about he has yet another detective hanging around him. Curious, Amuro asks about [[Masumi Sera|the other detective]] and hears she is a young girl. Amuro offers to drive the formerly tied up woman to her home after questioning was postponed until the next day. Conan, Ran and Kogoro come along for the ride. At the woman's house, Conan, Amuro, and Kogoro announce they need to use the restroom and go inside. Ran turns on her cellphone and immediately gets a call from Sera, who was worried after seeing the news of the murder. The call is full of static, and Amuro suddenly shuts Ran's phone and announces the place is bugged, which is interfering with the cellphone signal. Amuro gets out a bug detector and begins sweeping the house.
Ran, Amuro, and Kogoro find several bugs before coming across a large suitcase under a bed that is emitting a horrible smell. They opened the bugged suitcase and find a corpse inside.

Soon afterwards, it was revealed that the culprit was indeed the woman, who sent Kogoro a message claiming that she was having Conan in her hands. During the investigation, they have found out a video recording summary, which contains many news about the robbery, inside the TV. Amuro then quickly gave out the speculation that the apartment might actually belonged to one of the robbers instead. Ran didn't understand how a detective of such level of intelligence could willingly become her father's apprentice. However, Amuro modestly answered that Kogoro was just testing him, and that he still had got much to learn.

Later, they decided to check up the house's computer, which was protected with password. Amuro discovered that the password was hidden under the desk, but instead of revealing the fact directly, he chose to hint Kogoro and Ran about it. After having gained access to the computer,
they have all found out the identity of the third robber and her location, where Conan's kidnapper would most likely pay a visit. They followed the address and drive to that place, Sera approached them closely from behind. However, while still on the road, they suddenly learned that the third robber had been overwhelming both Conan and the killer, and they were in serious danger. Right after determining the exact car that those three were in, Amuro purposely crashed his own car into theirs in order to stop it. In the end, the robber was defeated by Sera, Conan was safe. Amuro, Sera, Okiya (who was driving Agasa and Haibara to the scene) were all shown to receive a mysterious call. Vermouth called Bourbon and commented that he had gained some trust<ref>It wasn't specified whose trust</ref> and that she expected him to keep his (unstated) promise to her.

Amuro has a day off of work. After Amuro had his encounter with Sera in the previous case, he notices that she looks like Akai, so Amuro once again disguises himself as Akai to gauge her reaction. However, like Jodie and Camel before her, Sera was just as shocked by his appearence.

Conan and the [[Detective Boys]] encounter Amuro who was coming from the police station due to the event of the [[Detectives' Nocturne|"Online Client"]] case. Because he had crashed his car into the car of the woman who kidnapped Conan, he was called to come there and finish some procedures so the police could determine whether his action had been overkill. He expresses his disappointment at not being able to meet [[Professor Agasa]] with them. He also states that he had another purpose for coming to the station, but when asked by Conan what it is, Amuro claims that it "has already disappeared".

Later, when [[Wataru Takagi|Takagi]] is still trapped, he reminisces of a time with his mentor [[Wataru Date]] and he said that Date was the top student at the police academy. However, Date rebutted this and told Takagi that he had always been number 2. He also said that neither his brains nor his brawn was anything compared to that guy who was like a gentleman. Later, it's revealed that the person whom Date was talking about is Amuro. He leaves a toothpick by Date's grave and watches Takagi and Sato pay their respects. Before leaving, he deletes a text message that Date sent him, while thinking "Rest in peace, my friend..."

Ran and Kogoro are being served by Amuro at the Poirot. Presumably in reponse to being asked about Conan's absence, Kogoro tells Amuro that Conan and the [[Detective Boys]] went camping in Gunma, and they will be sending pictures to Kogoro's computer later. When Sera calls Ran to ask about [[Vehicles_in_Detective_Conan#Volkswagen_Beetle|what sort of vehicle Agasa drives]], Amuro listens suspiciously. Late that night, Amuro furtively sneaks into the empty Mouri Detective Agency and logs onto Kogoro's website using the password Kogoro inadvertently told him [[Tooru_Amuro#Murder_at_Mouri_Detective_Agency_.28Manga:_796-800.29|in an earlier case]]. Instead of pictures from the Detective Boys' camping trip that he was expecting, he sees a video sent by someone (Mitsuhiko) that shows [[Shiho Miyano]] rescuing [[Ayumi]] from a cabin fire. He is shocked, and then he zooms in on her hand and notices she is wearing a pass ring for the Bell Tree Express mystery train. Amuro then notices that Kogoro's computer was being hacked [[Subaru Okiya|by someone]] and wonders who did it. Amuro passes over the information that Shiho appeared in Gunma and will be boarding the mystery train to Vermouth who will relay it to Gin.

Amuro appears on the train where he runs into Ran and the others. When asked what he is doing there, Amuro claims he won his tickets in an online auction and that he coincidentally met Kogoro in the dining cart where he learned of the case. When Masumi Sera runs off to find Scar Akai (Vermouth), Amuro is seen with his phone out contacting Vermouth that she was heading her way. He then comes when Conan (through Kogoro) starts his deduction on the murder culprit and reveals that three mirror plates were stuffed in a painting which was used for the locked room murder trick.

However, after the culprit confesses, Vermouth activated smoke canisters throughout the train in order to lure Ai Haibara (who supposedly transformed back to Shiho Miyano) out. After that is successful, Amuro introduces himself to her by calling himself Bourbon. He goes on to ask Shiho if she knows who he is to which she claims that he was a rival to her sister's love Dai Moroboshi (Shuichi Akai). Amuro starts to gloat saying that he knew Akai was FBI and that he couldn't believe that he was killed. He then says he decided to disguise as Akai in front of those close to him, although he asked Vermouth to disguise as him on the train. From that, he could only conclude that Akai really died. Putting Shiho at gunpoint, he tells her to go into the eighth cart so he can detach it with C4 explosives and bring her back to the organization. However, Shiho reveals that there are more C4 explosives in the train, when Amuro realizes that Vermouth put them there and that she plans to have Sherry killed. However, before he can do anything else, the real Akai (whom Amuro mistook as Vermouth) comes behind him and throws a grenade to detach the eighth cart. Amuro dodges the explosive relatively unscathed and the eighth cart explodes, but Shiho (who was really Kaitou Kid in disguise) is able to escape. Amuro then regroups with Vermouth and asks her to give him the files on before and after Akai's death. He thinks to himself that he'll have to start from square one, while Okiya, who is revealed to be Shuichi Akai watches on silently.

After the events of the Bell Tree express, Amuro went on sick leave which Conan took as a sign that he wasn't planning to return. However, to Conan's horror, Amuro had asked Kogoro if he and Sonoko wanted tennis lessons. He meets them at a tennis court and reveals he will be coming back to work at the Poirot next week. When a tennis racket accidentally slips from a player's hand, Amuro tries to warn Conan that it will hit him, but Conan is unable to dodge it in time. Conan is knocked unconscious, and Amuro rushes over and does everything to make sure Conan is assisted medically before a real doctor arrives to check Conan's condition. When Conan awakens, he finds out he was moved to the house of the person who hit him with the racket. After an apology, the group asks if Amuro, Sonoko, and the Mouris would like to play doubles tennis with them. Conan goes off to take a nap, but a loud noise wakes him up, and he discovers one of the players has been murdered and the body is locked in the room with him. Worried about the noise, Amuro picks the room's lock and tries to open the door, but Conan yells at him to stop as there is a beaten body next to it. When the police come to investigate, Amuro helps in the investigation. As Conan prepares to tranquilize Kogoro, Amuro, starting to get suspicious, bends down to examine Conan aiming his watch, which prevents Conan from using it. Conan is instead forced to give out hints to lead Kogoro and the police to the right answer. After the case is over, Amuro and Vermouth have a phone conversation. Vermouth asks why Amuro is still sticking around the Mouri Detective Agency when there is no need to because Sherry has been dealt with, and Amuro responds that he is interested by ''Sleeping Kogoro''. As he says this, he thinks of Conan instead, implying he suspects Conan is the real Sleeping Kogoro.

The Detective Boys become trapped in a refrigerated delivery truck with a cat, a dead body, and two murderous workers. Unable to call for help and out of other options, Conan decides to try to get a message to Amuro using the cat and a doctored receipt. The receipt initially blew away, but after realizing it was from Conan, Amuro tracks it down using a specialized app on his phone that can simulate wind conditions between the buildings in Beika city. Amuro locates the delivery truck in his repaired [[Vehicles_in_Detective_Conan#Amuro.27s_Mazda_RX-7|Mazda RX-7]]. The Black Organization agent decides to pretend like he came by chance instead of decoding the message on the receipt, and asks the two delivery men to make way because the street is narrow. When the kids see him and cry for help, Amuro, playing dumb, asks why they are in that truck. One of the murderers then orders Amuro to get in the truck by threatening the safety of the children. Amuro immediately punches the man's chest so hard that he coughs up blood. The remaining kidnapper backs down and Amuro ties him up and tells Conan to call the police. The children then reveal that they are outside of Agasa's house, which Amuro takes interest in. Haibara manages to stay behind the other kids and goes unnoticed by Amuro, and Okiya watches the unfolding scene from Shinichi's house's window.

===A Shrine to Remember (Manga: [[Volume 80|850]]-[[Volume 81|852]], Anime: [[Jodie's Memories and the Cherry Blossom Viewing Trap|734]])===
Suspecting that they may hold more valuable information for his investigation, Amuro follows Conan and Jodie to a sakura viewing scenic spot and attempts to approach them using someone else's appearance. He, with Vermouth's assistance, impersonates a random man named [[List of Black Organization related characters|Touhei Benzaki]], after having knocked him unconscious. Unknowing to Amuro, the real Benzaki has just been pickpocketed by a female thief.

In front of Conan and Jodie, Amuro claims to be the husband of the woman who taped Jodie back in the [[Detective Boys vs. Robber Group|bank robbery case]], where he was also one of the victims himself. He also says that he saw [[Scar Akai]] a few days back, to which both of them react strongly. Jodie immediately grabs Amuro's arm and questions him where did that happen, while he takes advantage of the chance and secretly plants an eavesdropping device inside the sleeve of her jacket. Suddenly, the female thief approaches them in an attempt to steal Jodie's money. She recognizes Benzaki's face and worries that he may figure out about her action, but Amuro pays no further attention to her. After that, he declares not remembering the place that he saw Scar Akai due to his cold; and during a conversation with Jodie, Amuro learns that [[Shuichi Akai]] likes drinking canned coffee and has dropped one back when the Organization was trying to [[Clash of Red and Black|attack]] Haido Central Hospital. Jodie also implies that she knows Scar Akai and the real Akai are not the same person. She hands to Amuro her phone number and asks him to contact her if he happens to recall anything.

Later, the female thief is murdered by one of her victims and Amuro (as Touhei Benzaki) unwillingly becomes one of the suspects. Through the eavesdropping device planted earlier, Amuro is able to listen to Jodie's conversations with Conan, where she mentions how Conan assisted the FBI in unmasking [[Rikumichi Kusuda]] as the spy from the Organization using his cellphone.

After the case is closed and the culprit gets arrested, Conan expresses his surprise at Benzaki not being able to recognize the thief the second time he met her, and wonders if he has bad eyesight. Amuro awkwardly evades the question by saying that he was there to buy a good-luck charm and not to see the flowers. Much to his luck, Vermouth, imitating the appearance of the woman who taped Jodie, walks towards them and answers that the good luck charm was for their baby. She pretends to have a [[wikipedia:Morning sickness|morning sickness]] in order to remove the eavesdropping device from Jodie and create an excuse for Amuro to leave the crime scene immediately. Amuro then returns the stolen purse to the real Benzaki and drives Vermouth away.

Inside the car, Amuro and Vermouth discuss about the case a little. She wonders whether he has got hold of something interesting from Jodie. Amuro states that he has learned a "surprising inside story", but won't share the details with Vermouth until he's got the proof. He only comments that Conan is a "terrifying man".

===Steamy Relations (Manga: [[Volume 81|856]], Anime: [[Bathroom Where Ran Collapsed As Well|740]])===

Conan suspects that the couple who approached him and Jodie was in fact Bourbon and Vermouth in disguise. While panicking, Conan realizes that the slip in Bourbon and Vermouth's story that allowed him to recognize their lie might have been intentional, so that he would realize the truth, panic, and then make a critical mistake. Conan calms down and calls Haibara to confirm whether she has felt any members of the Black Organization lately, not knowing that Amuro is watching him closely from a corner nearby.

===Taii's Owner (Manga: [[Volume 82|865-868]], Anime: [[The Beckoning Calico Cat Case|751]])===
Amuro observes Conan solving a case involving the ownership of a rare cat. He mentions to Azusa that Conan intentionally made up a fact so that he could do his test on the suspects; Conan is like a cat hiding his claws.

Bourbon goes to [[Haido Central Hospital]] looking for information about what happened to the spy [[Rikumichi Kusuda]]. Unfortunately, Conan lies badly when Amuro asks him if he knew Rikumichi, and Amuro learns that Conan really did know Rikumichi. Later, a child saying "Zero" prompts Amuro to remember a conversation during his childhood between him and a woman who looks like [[Elena Miyano]]. {{cquote|I told you not to do that, didn't I? His colleagues attempt to corner [[Jodie]] and [[Camel]] in Raiha Pass to make sure Akai wouldn't resist capture, only to be foiled by Akai himself who has been hiding in the back seat of the car Jodie and Camel are in. It was then explored that Bourbon's real name was Rei Furuya and he is a member of Japanese secret police infiltrating the [[Black Organization]]. His colleagues in this case also come from the same agency and [[Akai]]'s and Rei's hostility come from an incident involving an unspecified man, about whom Akai says he regrets.

* The character Tooru Amuro is named after, Amuro Ray, is the mortal enemy of the character [[Shuichi Akai]] is named after, Char Aznable.
* He is a detective and very skilled at information gathering.
* He is male as the codename Bourbon implies. The [[Black Organization]] codename pattern is that hard liquors are used for men's codenames, and [[Hidemi Hondou|Kir]] used a male specific pronoun to refer to Bourbon in the [[Volume_67#Department_Store_Bomber_Case|Department Store Bomber Case]].<ref name=703p3elab>Manga Volume 67, File 7, page 3: "The Truth Amidst the Snowstorm" Kir uses the masculine only term "kare" (彼) to refer to Bourbon instead of a gender neutral term.</ref>

If Subaru was someone that Conan did not know, it would be very unlikely that Conan would let him live in the Kudo's house and near Haibara (Sherry).

[[Wataru Date]] and Rei Furuya were friends in the police academy; Rei was the top ranked student, while Date held second place. While Date went on to become an officer, Rei went somewhere else and fell out of contact with Date for unknown reasons. Date's last text to Rei asked him where he was and chided Rei to communicate once in a while. Rei was shown visiting Date's grave, and likely left a toothpick out of respect for Date; Date used them habitually.

====Conan Edogawa====
Rei seems to respect [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]]'s intelligence and also seems to look out for Conan as well. He wound up protecting Conan while disguised as [[Scar Akai]] at the Teito Bank, and as Rei helped Conan get out of a kidnapping situation and doctored him when Conan took a racket to the head. Before knowing he was Bourbon, Conan was generally friendly towards Rei. After the events of the Bell Tree Express, dealing with Rei hanging around has become awkward for Conan especially because he worries for Ran's safety around a member of the Black Organization.

Although his mission concerning Sherry is over, Rei has decided to investigate Conan. Rei seems to know that Conan is using Mouri Kogoro as a puppet for his deductions. He also overheard a conversation between Jodie and Conan about how Conan helped the FBI fight the Black Organization while [[Kir]] was at Haido Central Hospital.

During the Teacher Assault Case, Conan indirectly asks Rei if he is undercover in the Black Organization, whispering, "You are an enemy, right? Of the bad guys..." unaware that Rei was wearing a wire at the time, monitored by Vermouth. To throw off suspicion, Rei assures Conan in a very threatening manner that Conan was mistaken. After the Scarlet Showdown, however, Conan approaches Rei in Poirot Cafe and calls him a liar. Rei returns the favor, the two of them exchanging knowing smiles.

====Kogoro Mouri====

Rei tends to act ingratiating whenever [[Kogoro Mouri]] is around, and is especially fawning over his "Mouri-sensei". Kogoro is alternatively flattered by Rei's praise and annoyed with his effusive personality. Overall Kogoro tends to treat Rei flippantly despite being paid a handsome sum for the apprenticeship. When among members of the Black Organization, Rei doesn't speak too badly of Kogoro despite Kogoro's obvious incompetence. Rei is becoming more skilled at herding Kogoro through cases without having the older man realize that Rei is a far superior detective and is manipulating him for information.

Bourbon despises [[Shuichi Akai]] for some unknown reason and believes he is the only one capable of killing him.<ref name=703p3/> In file 897, it's strongly hinted that Rei hates Akai because of some event involving a certain "he" whom Rei knows; however, no further clarification is made.<ref>[[Volume 85]], File 897, Page 10: "Scarlet Truth" Akai: "Also, about him, I regret what happened, even now..." ''(Translation: Zenthisoror - DCTP)''</ref> Later, they forgive each other and form an alliance because they have the same targets.

====Vermouth====
[[Vermouth]] and Bourbon keep close contact with one another, and seem to be closer to one another than, say, Bourbon and Gin. Bourbon specializes in intelligence gathering, so he likely belongs to the same [[Black_Organization#Organization_structure_and_divisions|reconnaissance division of the Black Organization]] as Vermouth. While it is still uncertain whether Bourbon is working directly under Vermouth, she seems to keep track of his actions during his missions at times,<ref>[[Detectives' Nocturne]]</ref> and he also often informs her about his discoveries or his future plans.<ref>[[Volume 78|File 818]] (Bourbon was said to have told Vermouth about Sherry's video); [[Volume 78|File 827]] (Bourbon tells Vermouth that he is now interested in "Sleeping Kogoro")</ref> Vermouth helped Bourbon create a [[Scar Akai|disguise]] that looked like Akai so he can investigate his enemy's death. Later, she somehow helped him approach [[Kogoro]] because he suspected that the detective was in contact with [[Sherry]]. Bourbon made an unknown promise to Vermouth (possibly being to not harm Conan), and she calls to ask him if he will be upholding it after the car chase in [[Detectives' Nocturne]]. 

The two have shown to be working together, not unlike Gin and Vodka, though the bond and trust between them are somewhat lacking. In addition to Bourbon's promise to Vermouth, he is also aware of her secret relationship to the Boss/Anokata, as noted at the end of the Scarlet Showdown. Bourbon utilizes this information to enlist Vermouth's assistance in his investigations, arranging for her secret to be released to the other members of the Organization should she kill him in an attempt to seal his mouth shut.

==== Elena Miyano ====
Rei was probably close with [[Elena Miyano]] as a child before she died. Elena would doctor Rei after he got into fights. She is also aware of his true name, calling him "Rei-kun."

====Gin====
[[Gin]] dislikes Bourbon's personality and finds him annoying for being secretive and always doing what he pleases. At the same time, Gin respects Bourbon's detective abilities. The two do not seem to be in contact with one another, as Gin has no idea what Bourbon is doing.

====Akemi Miyano====
[[Akemi Miyano]] and Rei seem to have met at some point because Akemi told Shiho that Bourbon has a rivalry with Akai. 

====Shiho Miyano====
Rei doesn't seem to have any hostility towards [[Shiho Miyano|Shiho]] unlike other Black Organization members. He attempted to capture the person he thought was her alive instead of trying to kill her, regretting he might have to resort to violence to do so. Rei says he had met Elena and Atsushi Miyano while they were alive. Rei does not know Shiho is [[Ai Haibara|Ai]]. During a car chase in [[Detectives' Nocturne‎]], Shiho gets a strong feeling that member of the Black Organization was behind her, but she doesn't seem to pinpoint it to Rei's pursuing [[Vehicles_in_Detective_Conan#Mazda_RX-7_2|Mazda FD RX-7]].

===Others===
====Masumi Sera====
Rei first meets [[Masumi Sera|Sera]] when Conan gets kidnapped. After both of them save Conan, he becomes very surprised to see her and wonders why is she here. Next day, he does not have any work. Rei sees Sera again after the previous case, and notices that she looks similiar to Shuichi Akai. To confirm his theory, Rei once again disguised himself as [[Scar Akai]] to gauge her reaction. Suddenly, Sera sees him in the crowd ahead and just like Jodie and Camel before her, Sera becomes just as shocked by his appearance. She runs after him, but he disappears before she can catch him. Ran wonders who Sera was chasing, but Sera replies she thought it was someone she knew. Sera silently appends in her mind that it would be impossible for the man she was chasing to be the person she thinks it was. While Rei watches her from a little ahead, confirming his suspicion that Sera is related to Akai.

==Speculation==
Gin has revealed that Bourbon is as secretive as Vermouth. Bourbon has shown a friendly relationship with Vermouth but not with other members so far. Bourbon even hid some details from Conan. It is possible that Bourbon, as well as Kir, is a member who doesn´t like the Organization. Date himself revealed that Bourbon was the best man at the police academy, and that Bourbon was a gentleman like Takagi, too. Besides, at the end of Takagi´s Kidnapping Case, Bourbon refers to Date as "my friend", which means he had no option but to cut all means of contact with him for his own safety.

Her English mother, [[Elena Miyano]], and her Japanese father, [[Atsushi Miyano]], were both scientists working for the Black Organization on an important secret project. While Haibara was young, both her parents died in what was claimed to be an accident. While Akemi lived a normal life, the highly intelligent Haibara was groomed to take over her parents' research. A child prodigy, she was sent to the United States for education at a very young age, and then later came back to Japan to finish her parents' secret project, "Silver Bullet".<ref>Manga [[Volume 38]], Files 2-4 (384-386)</ref>. By the age of thirteen she was working as a scientist for the Black Organization.<ref>Akai started infiltrating the Black Organization five years ago. He did so by becoming Akemi’s girlfriend in order to get close to Shiho and use her influence to get in. Shiho was about 18 years old when she developed the experimental test compound [[APTX 4869]]. She discovered that it could be used as a poison to kill without leaving any traces of itself in a body. While researching its effects, Shiho noticed that one of her lab mice had become younger after being given the drug instead of dying, though she did not report that effect. Meanwhile, the Black Organization started human trials, using APTX 4869 to commit untraceable murders. Unaware of the drug's rare side effect when they used it on [[Shinichi Kudo]], the Black Organization ordered a search for him because his body had not been found to confirm his death. Shiho and her team searched Shinichi's house twice after he had been shrunk to confirm his death for the Black Organization. She began to suspect Shinichi's transformation after the second search, when she found that his clothes from primary school had gone missing. Shiho then confirmed him as deceased so the organization would not look into the matter further and kill him after all.

Shiho was unhappy that the Black Organization's was using the incomplete APTX 4869 for murder, as that was not the drug's intended purpose. When Shiho received word that her sister Akemi had been killed, but was given no explanation why, she decided to boycott her research until the Black Organization gave her an adequate explanation. Instead, the Organization confined her in a small room to await her execution. With no other way out, she took a pill of APTX 4869 to commit suicide, but instead shrank into a six or seven year old girl. In her new, smaller body, she escaped from the Black Organization and attempted to reach Shinichi's house, hoping he might be able to help her. To prevent the knowledge of her transfiguration from being discovered, Shiho and Professor Agasa create her alias ''Ai Haibara'' (known as Anita Hailey—recently Vi Graythorn—in the English dub). As Ai Haibara, she attends [[Teitan Elementary School]] with [[Shinichi Kudo]]'s shrunken form, [[Conan Edogawa]]. Following her first adventure with the [[Detective Boys]] in which they investigate the disappearance of a schoolmate's brother, she reveals her true identity to Conan and the fact that she had developed the [[APTX 4869]].<ref>Manga Chapter 178: Code Name Sherry</ref> At first stunned, then outraged, Conan protests her presence,<ref>Manga Chapter 179: The Girl Made Of Lies</ref> but as time passes, he accepts Haibara as a friend and fellow victim, though her cynicism and secretive air still rail him at times. When the Black Organization attempts to kill or capture her aboard a train, a counterplan devised by Conan, [[Subaru Okiya]], [[Yukiko Kudo]], and [[Kaitou Kid]] results in an explosion that preserves Shiho's secret identity and makes all the Black Organization members besides Vermouth believe she is dead.

Haibara has a calm and cool personality, sarcastic wit, and high intelligence. When freshly escaped from the Black Organization, she was cynical and pushed others away. Haibara has since defrosted by embracing her new child life and has established strong relationships with Conan, the Detective Boys, Agasa, and Ran.

As Ai Haibara, she speaks and acts older than she is supposed to be, which results in the Detective Boys referring to her as "cool" or "mature". This is emphasized by her impressing general knowledge, even in areas without relation with sciences (such as theology or history<ref>[[Mushrooms, Bears, and the Detective Boys|Episode 212: Mushrooms, Bears, and the Detective Boys]] where she explains the religious myth of the Fall</ref><ref>[[The Evidence That Didn't Disappear|Episode 232: The Evidence That Didn't Disappear]] where she explains the death of Marie-Antoinette</ref>). Despite her jaded demeanor, she can be kind and caring, though usually more to animals than people. Haibara tends to be quiet, though this may be due to her caution to keep herself hidden from the Black Organization. Haibara is generally a loner and misses her older sister, Akemi, greatly (in the film ''[[Countdown to Heaven]]'', she would call her sister's old apartment just to hear her voice on the voicemail). Her greatest fear is being caught by the [[Black Organization]], and she is especially terrified of [[Gin]] and [[Vermouth]]. She tries to keep Conan from doing reckless things that may give away their identity, though often she is surprised by his actions which usually result in gaining the information he needs while also keeping their identities secret. However, whenever Conan is reckless in regards to keeping his identity from Ran, Haibara is the one who plans ahead in order to keep him from being revealed.

What's more, in one of the cases, in order to expose the identity of the person who hid the phone cables to cut off communications with the outside world, she was asked by Conan to fake an unbearable appendix pain, which she agreed to after jokingly requesting for a Fusae Brand's wallet for her cooperation. == Plot overview ==

Conan's class receives a new student named Ai Haibara. She acts rather cold and reserved when the Detective Boys try to befriend her, and Genta notices she's looking at Conan suspiciously. She tells them where she lives but Conan fails to realize it's at Agasa's home (Tokyo blocks are not numbered in sequential order and Conan has never had reason to learn Agasa's mailing address due to their being neighbors).

After school, a boy named Toshiya asks the Detective Boys to find his missing brother. The Detective Boys along with Haibara investigate Toshiya's house and finds a painting of [[Wikipedia:Natsume Sōseki|Natsume Sōseki]]. Toshiya reveals that before his brother disappeared, a woman, who had an interest in that portrait, approached Toshiya's brother. The Detective Boys search around town to ask whether anyone has seen the woman or Toshiya's brother. Conan notices that a man was using a counterfeit ¥1000 and realizes Toshiya's brother was actually kidnapped and forced to help create counterfeit bills. After following the man along with the clues Toshiya's brother left behind, they are able to apprehend the organized crime group and save Toshiya's brother.

On the way home, Haibara reveals to Conan that she is a former member of the Black Organization, with the code name "Sherry". She actually betrayed the group and escaped with the use of the APTX 4869, which caused her to become a child. She reveals that she once accidentally sent a floppy disk containing data on the Black Organization to her older sister, and the disc is now in the possession of her sister's professor, Masami Hirota.

Agasa takes Conan and Haibara there to retrieve the disk, only to discover that Hirota has been murdered. The suspects are Hirota's three students who visited that day. Conan reveals the culprit to be a man named Akira Shirakura; Shirakura after bludgeoning Hirota to death and tied the answering machine cassette tape around the key to the room which rewound when a call was made, subsequently dragging the key into the room. As evidence, Conan reveals that Shirakura's fingerprints should be found on the tape. After seeing Conan's amazing display of logic after she had given up on the case herself, Haibara breaks down and asks Conan why he could not save her sister, Akemi, from the Black Organization. Conan finally makes the connection that the "Masami Hirota" who Gin killed was actually Shiho's sister, and sympathy for Haibara's attitude stirs in him. The disc is taken into police custody, but once it is released to them Haibara attempts to read the files off the disk—only to have [[Night Baron|a virus]] delete all the data.

In Episode 176-178, Conan encounters Gin and Vodka again. Haibara is kidnapped and confined to a wine cellar by the Black Orgnization member [[Pisco]], but she escapes before Gin and Vodka arrive by drinking [[baijiu]] to turn back into an adult. Gin anticipates her actions and intercepts her on the roof. Gin shoots her repeatedly, hoping he can force her to explain how she escaped from the Organization. Conan prevents Gin from killing her by shooting the man with his [[Stun-Gun Wristwatch|tranquilizer wristwatch]]. Conan tells Haibara to jump into the chimmey, and Vodka shoots at him, but Conan gets away. Gin purposely shoots himself in the arm to stay awake. Inside, Pisco almost kills Haibara, but Conan rescues her after tricking Pisco into accidentally causing a fire. Gin kills Pisco for failure before Pisco's able to tell him the truth that Shiho Miyano has deaged into a young girl. Worried that the Organization is after her, Haibara decides to leave the city. Conan anticipates that Gin will predict her next move as leaving Tokyo, so it will be better if she does the unexpected and remains in Beika. Unknown to Conan or Haibara, [[Vermouth]] saw Haibara at the party and uses her expert disguise skills to get closer to Haibara and Conan in order to confirm Haibara's identity as Sherry and then kill her.

Conan finds out that Ran suspects him of being Shinichi, because Ran said she knew Conan's blood type for a blood transfusion. While Conan is in the hospital contemplating admitting his identity to her, Haibara enters and points a gun at his head, saying that the Black Organization has found out about her due to an unknown agent being present at the Pisco incident. Because of this, Professor Agasa is held hostage and, in exchange for his life and a chance to return to the Black Organization, Haibara is required to terminate all the links she had in her child identity. However, when she pulls the trigger a bunch of flowers come out, showing that the story was just an act. Still, she uses this story as her point: both Haibara and Conan cannot reveal their identities no matter the situation, in order to prevent such a tragedy from occurring.

During that night, Haibara explains her plan to disassociate Conan from Shinichi in Ran's eyes. She has Conan take a [[prototype antidote]] for APTX 4869 and then disguises herself as Conan. For the rest of the arc, Conan returns as Shinichi while Haibara is present as Conan, thus creating the illusion of Shinichi and Conan existing at the same time, disproving that the two are the same person.

At the end of the Desperate Revival arc, the antidote begins to run out and Shinichi runs into the bathroom, where Haibara is still disguised as Conan already waiting for him. She predicted that Shinichi would run into the men´s bathroom after the symptoms of the back transformation would start to appear. She then switches Shinichi into Conan's clothes after the antidote runs out.

===[[The Mysterious Passenger]]===

Vermouth, disguised as [[Tomoaki Araide]], boards a bus that Haibara, Agasa, and the Detective Boys are riding to a ski resort. Whatever plan Vermouth might have had is completely interrupted by the bus being hijacked by random criminals and the presence of two FBI agents that have been tracking her: [[Jodie Starling]] and [[Shuichi Akai]]. Haibara detects Vermouth's presence on the bus. She becomes so afraid that the Detective Boys, Conan, and Agasa will be killed because of her that she decides to commit suicide, staying deliberately in the bus whose explosion was imminent. Only Conan's quick thinking saves her, and he asks her to not run away from life. However, those events make her remain anxious for several days.

Due to almost similar appearance between Jodie and Vermouth in this case, most viewers tend to make conclusion that Jodie and Vermouth are the same person. This is because when Vermouth dialog is played, it shows Jodie after that.

Vermouth finally launches her plan to kill Shiho. She prepares a distraction to lure Conan away so that Haibara is alone at Agasa's. Taking advantage of the fact that Haibara has practically become ill from fear, she calls as Dr. Araide to tell Haibara she is taking her to the hospital because she has been unwell for so long. The eavesdropping FBI agent [[Jodie Starling]] arrives first to protect Haibara and starts driving her towards the shipping yard where the FBI have laid a trap for Vermouth.

In a complicated turn of events, Vermouth reveals she already thwarted Jodie's trap, and then shoots her. Haibara then reveals herself to be Conan; Yukiko had helped with his disguise while Conan sent [[Heiji Hattori]] to participate in Vermouth's distraction. The real Haibara then shows up which distracts Conan long enough for Vermouth to dart him with his own stun-gun watch. Just as Haibara is about to be killed, Ran, who had suspected Jodie of being untrustworthy and decided to spy on her, jumps from Jodie's car trunk and protects Haibara. Vermouth is unwilling to kill either Conan or Ran because they had saved her life in the past. Part of the reason why she originally did not tell the rest of the Black Organization about Haibara's true identity is likely because they would find out about Conan too and then silence him and everyone around him as well.

Before Vermouth can come up with another plan, the other FBI agent, [[Shuichi Akai]] arrives and forces Vermouth to flee with Conan as a hostage. Vermouth dials [[anokata|the boss]] of the Black Organization to lie to him about why she was injured. Conan overhears the number and threatens to give it to the police for analysis unless Vermouth promises that she will give up on trying to kill Haibara. Vermouth consents and escapes.

In Episode 394, Conan figures out the boss's full number, but Haibara warns him not to call it because it is "[[Wikipedia:Pandora's Box|Pandora's Box]]". Conan then thinks he can get Detective Takagi to figure out who the number belongs to, but then Haibara warns that if he does, Detective Takagi will be killed. This scene is the first time Haibara openly reveals to Conan that she has been hiding important secrets about the Black Organization from him; earlier she [[Black_Organization#APTX_4869_and_Biochemistry|had lied to him]]. The exchange suggests that Haibara is withholding information because she fears Conan will make a rash move.

Not long after Akai's death, Conan hears fresh intel from the [[FBI]] that a new [[Black Organization]] agent called [[Rei Furuya|Bourbon]] is looking for Shiho, which Conan keeps secret from Haibara. As Conan and Haibara investigate a normal case, Haibara feels that an organization member is around. The organization member which she felt is implied to be one of the innocent suspects, [[Subaru Okiya]]. Conan invites Okiya to live in Kudo's house since Okiya's apartment was burnt to the ground. Okiya appears in other cases later on, including at the Haido mall where the rest of the Black Organization gathered to chase a rumored sighting of a [[Scar Akai|scarred Shuichi Akai]]. Although Okiya is trusted by Conan and Agasa and kind to Haibara, she remains frightened of him. Later, some of his actions lead her to believe he might be someone she knows and she comes to trust him more, even attempting to uncover his identity when she thought he was asleep.

Later, when Haibara is forced to revert to Shiho using a [[temporary antidote]], a video of her as an adult is sent to the Mouri Detective Agency by Mitsuhiko which Sera, Okiya, and Amuro find out about. Because of this, Haibara is later targeted by a plot concocted by Vermouth and Bourbon aboard the Bell Tree Express Train. Bourbon is revealed to be Amuro and Haibara learns that he knew her parents. Bourbon was hoping to capture Shiho alive, but Vermouth's modifications to his plan which were designed to kill her led to Shiho supposedly being blown up on the train. The Shiho Vermouth and Bourbon thought was killed was really [[Kaitou Kid]] in disguise, Conan having forced him into the plan. Because of this, all of the Black Organization besides Vermouth think Shiho is now dead, and Vermouth is unable to reveal the truth to the rest of them without also compromising Conan, Haibara and their deaged condition against her wishes.

Both are de-aged by APTX and have almost equal levels of intelligence, which makes Haibara and [[Conan]] close confidants and more sympathetic to one other than most other characters. Conan is one of the few people in front of whom she has shown any signs of weakness, such as breaking down over her sister's death. Ai Haibara has romantic feelings for [[Conan]]/[[Shinichi]], although she never truly admits to it (due to her assumption of Conan loving Ran). Haibara expresses a lot of interest in Conan's personality, intelligence, and sense of justice. If Conan is in danger she is willing to throw away her life to save him, overriding fears and concerns for her own safety that would ordinarily paralyze her. Similarly, Conan has saved Haibara's life more than once when she would have sacrificed herself for his and the [[Detective Boys]]' safety. Haibara also often enjoys teasing Conan which Conan takes in good stride. Conan is oblivious of Haibara's feelings and sometimes finds it difficult to deal with her sarcasm and impudent, cold nature. Although close on many matters, they still don't fully trust one another with information about the Black Organization out of concern for the safety and feelings of the other.

The relationship between Haibara and [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]] is rather unusual, if not humorous. Despite their actual ages, Haibara often acts more like a mother to the professor, constantly reminding him to watch what he eats. On several occassions, she has removed fattening foods from his reach<ref name=Depths>[[Strategy Above the Depths|Movie 9: Strategy Above the Depths]]</ref>, and is attempting to help get him into better shape. There have also been instances where she'll automatically step in front of Agasa in cases of danger.<ref name=Eyes>[[Captured in Her Eyes|Movie 4: Captured in Her Eyes]]</ref> Out of all the people she's met, Haibara seems most comfortable about acting herself with Professor Agasa; which might be attributed to the fact that he was the one who found her after she escaped the Black Organization, and took her in.

Early on, she is cold and distant towards Ran, even more so than she is to most other people. Ran believes that it is because Haibara hated her,<ref name=Net>[[The Mystery in the Net|Episode 246-247: The Mystery in the Net]]</ref> though in truth it is because Ran reminds Haibara strongly of her dead sister.

After Ran notices Haibara is not feeling well and carries her to safety during a case, Haibara finally properly introduces herself to Ran, and they slowly became friends. Because Haibara finds that Ran resembles her older sister, Akemi Miyano, she takes special interest in protecting her. In later episodes, Haibara doesn't seem to hate him so much anymore. She even tries to uncover Subaru's scarf to check something behind his neck, probably noticing some small machines made by Professor Agasa.

== Background ==
Vermouth's background is very mysterious because she has been secretly living at least two lives through the art of disguise: that of actress Sharon Vineyard (now "deceased") and her supposed daughter, Chris Vineyard.

As the actress Sharon Vineyard, Vermouth gained much fame on Broadway and in movies, even winning an Oscar. Even then, she was a member of the Black Organization. Twenty years ago, she murdered [[Jodie Starling]]'s [[FBI]] father who had collected information on her. Jodie Starling would eventually grow up to be an FBI agent and one of Vermouth's most bitter enemies. As Sharon, Vermouth became close friends with [[Yukiko Kudo]] back when they were studying disguise under [[Toichi Kuroba]].

At some point Sharon began to pretend to have a daughter named Chris. While Sharon was still alive, Chris kept out of the public eye except for acting in movies and giving interviews. Less than one year ago, Vermouth staged Sharon Vineyard's death, which allowed Chris to come out publicly. Currently, Vermouth serves the Black Organization with the public name Chris Vineyard.

Vermouth is [[Anokata|the boss]]’s favorite which grants her some independence. She also appears not to age or have de-aged over a period of twenty years between when she killed Jodie's parents and her current appearance. She doesn’t seem to like [[APTX 4869|the research]] that [[Shiho Miyano]] and [[Atsushi Miyano|her]] [[Elena Miyano|parents]] engaged in, calling it “foolish". <ref>[[Volume 42#File 434 - Rotten Apple|Volume 42, File 434: "Rotten Apple"]]</ref>

Vermouth entered the storyline some time after [[Ai Haibara|Shiho Miyano/Sherry/Ai Haibara]]'s mysterious flight from the Organization. Her main objective was to track down and eliminate the 'traitor', and for that purpose she assumed the identity of doctor [[Tomoaki Araide]]. But although she managed to discover Shiho's reversion into a child, she did not succeed in killing her, as she met [[Conan Edogawa]], who was able to discover and thwart her plans. She also encountered the FBI during this process.

Vermouth has great personal interest in Conan, constantly calling him "[[Silver Bullet]]". Since it has been revealed that she knows about Ai and Kudo's reversion to their child forms, she seems to know the shrinking effect the drug can have, but for reasons yet unrevealed she keeps this knowledge secret from the rest of the Organization.

== Personality ==
Although she follows orders from [[Anokata|the boss]] and [[Gin]] when he is charge of missions, Vermouth often acts according to her own agenda and whims, even when it runs contrary to the [[Black Organization]]'s best interests. She is secretive and manipulative, even towards other Organization members. Vermouth is confident in her abilities, is very bold, and an expert at manipulating situations to her advantage: traits which allow her to single-handedly weave complex plots and take the upper hand even while she is being monitored by enemies. She is intelligent and insightful, correctly suspecting the allegiance of Kir, but she was successfully outwitted by [[Conan]] and forced by [[Shuichi Akai]] to retreat.

Vermouth's personality is contradictory at times. On one hand, she is a cruel and ruthless agent who will blackmail an unwilling man to commit murder by threatening him and his family just to provide a distraction and happily tell [[Jodie Starling|an FBI agent]] she should smile because she will see her dead father again in heaven. On the other hand, she risks her life several times to protect Conan, [[Ran]], and [[Kogoro]], and her friendly behavior while in disguise as Tomoaki Araide left the real Araide wondering if Vermouth is really a bad person. This inconsistency may reflect an underlying conflict of conscience after [[Shinichi]] and Ran saved her life during the events of the [[Vermouth_timeline#Golden_Apple_Case_.28Manga:_350-354_Anime:_286-288.29|Golden Apple case]]. Vermouth also appears to be an atheist at first as she claims to not believe in god nor angels until Ran unknowingly rescued her which seems to have given her back some faith.

At this point, Vermouth's motives are very mysterious. She knows about Conan being Shinichi, as well as that Haibara is Sherry, yet she has kept this information a secret from the rest of the Organization. She dislikes the Miyano family's research. She also retains personal feelings for persons who have earned a special place in her heart, such as Shinichi/Conan (as the son of [[Yukiko Kudo|her best friend]]) and [[Ran Mouri|Ran]].<ref name="e288">[[Shinichi Kudo's New York Case|Episode 288: Shinichi Kudo's New York Case, Part 3]].</ref> As a result, she is highly unwilling to do them any harm even when she is ordered to do so.

Vermouth is able to mimic anyone's appearance and voice exactly with her disguise and acting skills even after observing them for only a short period of time. Vermouth frequently utilizes latex masks. Her disguising ability has been noted by Conan to be on par with the current Kaito Kid (Kaito Kuroba).<ref>[[Volume 44|Volume 44, File 457, Page 7]]</ref> Although she may have known how to disguise prior to meeting [[Toichi Kuroba]], she studied disguise under him. Vermouth specializes in reconnaissance and infiltration, and has been shown to work very swiftly yet cautiously to rapidly acquire information. Her confidence and skill in disguise and imitation means she can execute bold plans that put her in very close contact with her targets and she can advance her plot even when they are suspicious of her. Without the aid of the other organization members, Vermouth successfully snuck into the [[Tokyo Metropolitan Police|Tokyo Metropolitan Police headquarters]] in order to steal the records of [[Kogoro Mouri]]'s cases. She later returned them when presumably the surveillance would be even higher after the police noticed the files were missing. She then single-handedly staked out the [[FBI]] who were lured out into watching Kogoro Mouri and uncovered their numbers, addresses, and ways to contact them.

===Stamina===
Vermouth is quite strong and has developed a high pain tolerance. While she was disguised as a serial killer in New York City, Vermouth athletically vaults up from a dead hanging positioning over the railing of the stairwell to higher ground despite being shot in the side. She also shoots herself in the leg in order to avoid the effects of sleeping gas, and was able to limp to a phone booth on that shot leg, with several broken ribs caused by Akai, and with a deep scratch on her right shoulder when Jodie shot at her.

===Shooting===
As Vermouth pulled away in Jodie's car with broken ribs after her flak jacket absorbed a close range shotgun blast, she managed to aim a handgun backwards with her left hand using the side mirror while driving a car she wasn't used to and shoot Araide's car's gas tank standing 100 yards away, causing it to explode. Akai is impressed she managed that difficult shot with her battered body. Earlier however, she failed to draw fast enough to shoot Jodie or Akai; in the first case, the gun was shot out of her hand, in the second, Akai fired first.

For some reason, Vermouth does not appear to age. Her apparent age hasn’t changed since she murdered Jodie’s parents twenty years ago.<ref name="f433">[[Volume 42#File 433 - The Truth Behind the Mask|Volume 42, File 433: "The Truth Behind the Mask"]]</ref> [[Shuichi Akai]] proved that Vermouth was not wearing a mask when his shotgun fire grazed her face. Specifically, it hasn't been clarified if Vermouth hasn't aged over time or if she became younger all at once. It is also important to note that Vermouth's talent for disguise makes it difficult to figure out when Vermouth stopped aging or deaged.

===Raven Chaser===
In Movie 13: [[The Raven Chaser]], Vermouth disguises as a brown haired policeman in a dark suit with glasses to check on Irish's progress and the integrity of his disguise during the conference. After texting the boss outside the bathroom, she exits the building and leaves in Gin's Porsche 356A.

She is seen again disguising as a young brown-haired woman when trying to come closer to the believed serial killer but leaves as soon as she realizes he is not. [[Conan]] tracks her down in the underground parking lot and makes her reveal herself. She gives Conan essential information about an organization member named [[Irish]] and wishes him good luck when leaving.
It is later revealed that she was the one who supervised the captured [[Matsumoto]] and provided him with comestibles. When the police finds out about Matsumoto's remains, she informs [[Gin]] about it and leaves.
Finally, she is briefly seen driving along the Highway when Gin's helicopter crashes, complimenting Conan's accomplishments and calling him again a "silver bullet".

In order to camouflage the fact that Sharon Vineyard and Chris Vineyard are the same person, Vermouth concocted personal histories for her real life cover roles in order to make them seem like different people. When Sharon and Chris Vineyard were revealed to be one and the same, at least part of the stated Vineyard family history was revealed to be a lie. It is unknown how much of the remainder is truthful, based on the truth, or outright fabrication because the primary source of the information is Vermouth herself who may have more to hide.

Little is known of Sharon Vineyard's mother and father. Jodie's father in the FBI was secretly investigating Vermouth twenty years before the current storyline.<ref name="f433" /> That is too young for Chris Vineyard to be in disguise as she is only 29 currently and would be 9 at the time. After Vermouth killed Jodie's father she inadvertently handled Jodie’s father’s glasses barehanded which had fallen off of him and got her fingerprints on them. Unexpectedly, little Jodie came in and saw Vermouth holding the glasses. When Vermouth left after setting the house on fire, she didn't anticipate that Jodie left to get juice, taking her father’s glasses with her and thus preserving her fingerprint. After she discovered Jodie's corpse was not found in the house, Vermouth looked for the girl desperately in order to rectify her mistake, but Jodie had since been put into witness protection.

Jodie suspected Chris Vineyard of being Vermouth when she saw her at Sharon’s funeral. She somehow determined Chris Vineyard’s prints matched those of the glasses. Chris would have been too young to commit a crime 20 years ago, so later Jodie obtained Sharon’s fingerprints and matched those as well. All three matched, proving to Jodie that the three people were one and the same.

Conan realizes [[Tomoaki Araide]] is Vermouth because Vermouth needed the files to testify at the trial properly while in disguise.

Conan first suspects there is another Black Organization member who was present at the mourning party after considering how Pisco obtained another purple handkerchief which enabled him to leave the investigation. Conan didn't realize that this Black Organization member might be after him or Haibara until after the bus jack case when [[Haibara]] tells Conan there was definitely someone from the Organization on the bus. By the time Conan gets the letter from Vermouth inviting him the off-season Halloween mystery party, he has realized that Vermouth is most likely Dr. Araide because Jodie wasn't in Mouri's case files when they were stolen, while Araide was. Vermouth needed the files to give proper testimony at the trial and to act correctly as Araide. She caused a blackout to occur while she was supposedly on the phone, and during the ensuing darkness, snuck to the bathroom and put an electric shaver in the bathtub. She then crept back and asked the housemaid [[Hikaru Yasumoto]] to flip the circuit breaker, causing Yoshiteru Araide to be electrocuted. "Sleeping Kogoro", the police, and the criminal decided to create a false investigation record to protect the conscience of the maid Hikaru. At the same time Shinichi and Ran were in New York City, Vermouth disguised as a silver-haired serial killer in order to lure out [[Shuichi Akai]]. Later, Conan suspected the serial killer may have been someone in disguise when he heard that the serial killer’s blood and fingerprints on the stair rails were cleaned up, an action uncharacteristic for someone intending to commit suicide.<ref name=354p3>Manga [[Volume 35]], File 5 (354), pg 3: "Golden Apple 5". Note that Conan had not figured out everything completely at this point.</ref><ref>Manga [[Volume 37]], File 8 (380), pg 6: "White Snow... Black Shadow...". Conan is now convinced that the serial killer was killed. He had begun suspecting Shuichi Akai previously, and he still does at this point after Ran informs him Akai is an FBI agent, because Akai could be a spy in the FBI from the Black Organization.</ref> Sharon was the only person Conan knew about in the local area with high disguise abilities, so suspicion naturally fell onto her.

After Vermouth disguised as Araide, Conan deduced from the way Vermouth was behaving that she was trying to avoid involving Conan in her plan and was only targeting Haibara. Vermouth as Dr. Araide risked her life to protect Conan in the bus jack case and helped him out in Sato's matchup case. When Conan gets the letter from Vermouth inviting him the off-season Halloween mystery party, he realizes that Vermouth's intentions are to only trap Haibara and that Vermouth is trying to lure Conan to the party to avoid catching him up in her plan.

Conan who didn't exist a year ago has no reason to be “protected” by Vermouth. Conan deduces Vermouth must know his identity as Shinichi and the reason for her “protection” must have to do with something he did as Shinichi. However, Sharon was the only one Shinichi had a connection with, and she is apparently dead. Sharon’s daughter Chris has never met Shinichi and is estranged from Sharon Vineyard so she alone doesn't have an adequate motive to protect Shinichi. Also, it wouldn’t make sense for Chris Vineyard, who isn’t a family friend like Sharon, to be able to recognize Shinichi as Conan; presumably Vermouth saw young Shinichi with Yukiko when she was Sharon.<ref>Manga [[Volume 42]], File 10, pg 5</ref>

All these clues come together when Conan makes the assumption that Sharon Vineyard is Chris Vineyard who disguised as the silver haired serial killer in New York and that she is grateful for being rescued by [[Shinichi]] and [[Ran]].<ref name="f429p9">[[Volume 42#File 429 - The Full Moon and the Trap at the Banquet|Volume 42, File 429, page 9: "The Full Moon and the Trap at the Banquet"]]. Vermouth's age is unknown because her history is largely unclear. We know she has lived as Chris who is 29, and as Sharon whose age is unknown. Her face when she killed Jodie's father 20 years was youthful, suggesting she is currently at least 40 years old as long as no deaging has occurred.

===Vermouth did not use [[APTX 4869]]===
A popular theory on Vermouth's non-aging is that she used [[APTX 4869]] to achieve her youthfulness since this is the only known substance capable of producing such an effect ([[Silver Bullet]]'s effects are unknown at this point). However, at present there are things that contradict such a notion. Vermouth would have faced near certain death if she had used APTX 4869.<ref name=V2/> Before Vermouth discovered Haibara and Conan, the known members of the Black Organization (besides Sherry) only knew about APTX 4869's lethal effects,<ref>Sherry did not report the results that several of her mice shrank to the greater organization because they have not been able to figure out how Shiho managed to escape the locked room. If Shiho had reported her data, the Organization would have known that shrinking was a possible side effect of APTX 4869 and would have figured out how she escaped and begun looking for a child. Furthermore, if Shiho had reported to the Organization that APTX 4869 had the possibility of leaving the victim alive, the Boss and/or Shiho's superiors would not have permitted the drug in situations where the victim, if surviving, could escape as in Shinichi's case.</ref> and it was considered deadly enough that Sherry's superiors employed it as an untraceable murder weapon.<ref name=V2>Gin described APTX 4869 as a poison before using it on Shinichi, "We'll use this, the new poison the Organization developed. If there is any complication, you can use the 'experimental drug' [APTX 4869]" (V24-7 pg 17) If the boss, who has been stated to be cautious to a fault, knew about the risk that someone might survive APTX 4869, he would not let his subordinates use the drug without letting them know there was a chance it would leave people alive because, if someone escaped, they could talk to the police or someone else and leak the secret of the Black Organization's existence. If Gin knew it failed to work some of the time, he would have never left Shinichi alone while it acted, and would have also gone looking for him after his body disappeared if that was the case. Even Shiho Miyano who was aware APTX 4869 could rarely cause de-aging expected it to kill her. "I thought that since I was going to get killed anyways, I would take the APTX 4869 which I secretly held. To my luck, the drug that I took thinking it would kill me shrunk by body..." (V18-9 pg 8) Finally, Shiho makes it clear the Organization is not simply trying APTX 4869 out on victims, they are actively using it to kill. "If I reported your condition to the Organization, it's very likely you would have been terminated before I could do something useful." (V18-9 pg 7) Even though Shinichi was an "interesting specimen" (V18-9 pg 7), if the Org was field testing, they would try to capture Shinichi alive for study. Shiho was still project manager when use on humans began and when Shinichi was poisoned, so she would know the Organization's protocol should someone fail to die.</ref> However, given that Vermouth has said depressing things over the course of the series,<ref>"No angel has smiled upon me", "My life represents a series of misfortunes" (V35-1 pg 2)</ref> it is possible Vermouth took APTX 4869 hoping to commit suicide, but she de-aged instead, similar to Haibara's situation<ref>"I thought that since I was going to get killed anyways, I would take the APTX 4869 which I secretly held. It is possible that Atsushi and Elena Miyano had something to do with Vermouth's de-aging/non-aging (e.g. Vermouth was their guinea pig). This might explain the personal animosity Vermouth feels towards the Miyanos and why she calls their APTX experiment foolish.

Vermouth's de-aging/non-aging may be a result of a project older than Shiho's APTX 4869, like her parents' [[Silver Bullet]], or something else even older than that. Vermouth and [[Ai Haibara|Sherry]] have some connection, although it has not been elaborated on. Vermouth appears to dislike the research the Miyanos engaged in, calling it foolish. Shiho fears Vermouth more than most other members except perhaps Gin. Shiho was Vermouth's target, but Vermouth gave up on her after Conan's intervention. If Shiho was in a romantic relationship with Gin, then Vermouth and Shiho were love rivals as Vermouth was in a sexual relationship with Gin.<ref name="CD239c">Conan Drill page 239, "恋のライバル…?" (Love rivals?)</ref> During the Bell Tree Express arc, Vermouth tries to use C4 explosives to kill Sherry without telling anyone about the plan, while Bourbon wanted to take her back alive hinting at an abnormal hatred towards her.

In file 898, Bourbon reveals that there is some sort of connection between Vermouth and the [[Boss of the Black Organization]], implying that her relationship with the boss goes further than merely being his/her favorite member. Bourbon also notes that he has arranged for her secret to be revealed to the whole Black Organization in case something happens to him, and points out that the other members would be quite surprised if they knew the nature of the relationship.

[[Calvados]] was in love with Vermouth, and Vermouth took advantage of his feelings and used him. Vermouth called on Calvados to aid her in disposing with Jodie and capturing Haibara at the shipping yards. After Akai got the best of Calvados and Vermouth, she chose to run away, leaving him at the mercy of the FBI. Calvados chose to commit suicide rather than be caught.

[[Chianti]] and [[Korn]] both hate Vermouth because they believe that Vermouth took advantage of Calvados' feelings for her and used him, leading him to his death. Chianti has been more vocal with her hatred than Korn.

[[Jodie Starling]] has a bitter hatred for Vermouth because Vermouth murdered her father, but Vermouth doesn't have any particular animosity for Jodie beyond her being a skilled FBI adversary whom she would like to kill. Vermouth was extremely well liked and kind to students and patients while disguised as [[Tomoaki Araide]], so when the real Araide wonders if Vermouth is really a bad person, Jodie takes offense and angrily yells at him, "How can someone be a good person if she kills people with a smile!?"<ref>Manga Volume 45, File 2, pg 18: "The truth behind the remaining desk"</ref>

20 years before the current timeline, Vermouth goes to the house of Jodie's father, an FBI agent, and kills him. An eight to nine year old [[Jodie Starling]] walks in while Vermouth was trying to put his glasses back on his body and thinks her father is asleep. Vermouth tells her that she should wait for her father to wake up. When the girl asks her who is she, Vermouth replies "A secret makes a woman, woman". Vermouth burns the house down, thinking Jodie stayed behind and was killed as well. However, the girl goes out of the house to buy orange juice for her father, narrowly escaping death. She also takes her father's glasses with her, preserving the fingerprints Vermouth left on them. When Vermouth finds out Jodie's body was not in the house, she looks for her to kill her, but the FBI enrolled her in witness protection. Jodie later becomes an FBI agent in order to find her father's killer.

==== Shuichi Akai ====
Vermouth and [[Shuichi Akai|Akai]] don't have much personal animosity for each other in particular despite the fact that they have been hunting one another for some time. Vermouth regards Akai as a "silver bullet": someone with the potential to destroy the Black Organization. In accordance with this assessment, she attacks him immediately and preferentially in the confrontation with her at the docks. Akai seems to hit a nerve when he called her a rotten apple, wilted on the inside.

Later in the series, after [[Conan]] successfully interfered with Vermouth's plan of killing [[Haibara]], then almost forced her to surrender and take him to find [[The Boss of the Black Organization|the boss]], she gives him another nickname - "Silver bullet" - as she believes that he has the potential to destroy the Black Organization, because he could touch her heart. Generally, Vermouth tries to protect Shinichi when she is able to, even if it means risking her own life. Although Shinichi found out later that he unknowingly rescued Vermouth in New York City and that Vermouth was a friend of Yukiko's, Shinichi doesn't understand why Vermouth would make the promise to give up on hunting Sherry and not inform the Black Organization about Haibara and himself.

After Ran saved Vermouth's life in New York City, Vermouth nicknames [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] "Angel". Earlier, Vermouth, as her Sharon Vineyard role, complained that her life was a series of misfortunes and, "No angel has smiled upon me, not even once."<ref name="f350p18" /> Even though Vermouth in disguise prepared to kill Ran later, Ran stopped Vermouth from taking a fatal fall. Vermouth was touched by this act of kindness. Much later in the story when Ran shielded Haibara from gunfire with her body, Vermouth refused to shoot Ran or allow her to be shot, instead firing around her in an attempt to frighten Ran into releasing Haibara. Although Ran does not know who Vermouth really is, she values the handkerchief that Sharon Vineyard gave her back in New York.
