Subaru Okiya is a graduate student attending Tohto University to earn a doctorate degree in engineering. He originally lived at a boarding house, where the landlord's son nicknamed him "Red Man," after a firetruck, because he frequently saw him watering the plants. After the boarding house burned down in the [[Conan vs. Double Code Mystery|Red, White, and Yellow Arson Case]], [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] suggested he move into [[Shinichi Kudo|Shinichi]]'s house, explaining to Agasa and [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]] that someone living in the house would help to hide his (Shinichi's) disappearance. When Haibara protested, Conan cheerfully responded that someone who loves Sherlock Holmes cannot be a bad person - much to Haibara's consternation.<ref name=Neighbor>Manga [[Volume 60]] File 5: The New Neighbor</ref> Nevertheless, Conan decided to keep from Subaru which persons - specifically [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] - were closely connected to Shinichi.<ref>Manga [[Volume 60]] File 638 - Paper Airplane</ref>

Okiya is left-handed and greatly admires the deductive power of [[Sherlock Holmes]]. == Personality ==
Okiya is generally shown to be quiet and reserved, often seeming unfazed by normally stressful situations, such as when Ran attacked him while he was brushing his teeth, believing he had broken into Shinichi's house<ref>Manga [[Volume 61]] File 8: Paper Airplane</ref>, or when a murderer grabbed Ayumi as a hostage.<ref name=Speech>Manga [[Volume 64]] File 3: Thirst for Blood</ref> He often tends to behave in a friendly and modest manner, smiling and rubbing the back of his head whenever someone compliments him or says anything about him. He enjoys cooking and seems ready and willing to help with various tasks. He doesn't mind interacting with the [[Detective Boys]], is always polite to them, and listens to their theories during cases. He is often shown drinking bourbon whiskey.

Okiya becomes more serious while working on cases and enjoys revealing the truth to others similar to Conan. Sometimes he speaks mysteriously, leaving the meaning and intentions of what he said open to interpretation. Okiya has a more menacing side seen whenever he takes to the offensive or is intently focusing on something. In this frame of mind, Okiya triggers Haibara's Black Organization sense.

Okiya is an intelligent character with observation and case solving abilities comparable to Conan's. On his first meeting with Sonoko and Ran, he correctly deduces they had been to the restaurant "Wonder Burger" and what they had to eat while they were there.<ref name="638p">Manga Chapter 638</ref> He tends to hold back to allow Conan or others to present their conclusions rather than take center stage himself.<ref>Red, White, and Yellow case, Ikkaku Rock, Red Shirts case.</ref>

===Conan Edogawa===
[[Conan]] trusts Okiya for the most part, and they maintain an amicable relationship. Conan easily lends Okiya the keys to his house.<ref name=Neighbor>Manga [[Volume 60]] File 5: The New Neighbor</ref> Conan also trusts Okiya to help in cases that put him in close contact with both [[Ai Haibara]] and him, like switching out the gasoline in a container for water to solve a case,<ref name=Crackle>Manga Volume 61 File 7: Crackle</ref> or calling him to pick up everyone when [[Hiroshi Agasa|Agasa]]’s car broke down.<ref name=Burn>Manga Volume 61 File 5: Burn</ref> Okiya respects Conan and his intelligence and they both can solve cases at about the same level. Conan tells Haibara he is trustworthy because he is a fellow [[Sherlock Holmes]] fan, much to her annoyance. Subaru is one of the few [[List of characters who know Conan's identity|characters who knows Conan is Shinichi]] after confirming [[Conan vs. Double Code Mystery|his earlier suspicions]] by [[Volume_77#Cold_Case|listening to Conan]] make a phone call as Shinichi.

===Hiroshi Agasa===
Okiya and [[Hiroshi Agasa|Agasa]] maintain a good relationship with one another. The professor often asks him for favors, like picking the detective boys up from a fishing trip. Agasa also lets Okiya come over and cook from time to time and he will make Agasa food to return the favor, like stir-fried onions and curry. Agasa also seems well informed about when Okiya has free time and is available for favors or when he is on the road.

===Ai Haibara===
[[Ai Haibara]] doesn't trust Okiya because he gives her the chills which she only gets from those who have been in the Black Organization. She hides from him behind Conan when they meet in person and avoids being alone in Agasa's house when he is around. On his part, Okiya is kind to Haibara and seems to look out for her.

Haibara's opinion changes, however, in File 800 after Okiya consoles her when Conan is being abducted by a culprit in a crime. It is revealed afterwards that this is because what he said was similar to what Shuichi Akai had once told her when he was the lover of Haibara's sister, [[Akemi Miyano]]. Because of this, Haibara gains trust in Okiya and starts calling him by his first name.<ref> Chapters 800-803:When Objects Collide </ref>

===Rei Furuya===
They have not directly met, though Okiya has seen Tooru Amuro many times. In most instances, Okiya is the one to notice Amuro but avoids Amuro seeing him for some reason. During the thirteen red shirts case, both Okiya and Amuro (as [[Scar Akai]]) are present with the hostages. When Okiya is about to send his deductions about the bomber's identity to Kogoro's phone, he sees Amuro, and before Amuro can see him, disappears from the area. During the Conan Edogawa kidnapping case, Subaru leans out the door to shoot at the tires of the car Conan's in, but Amuro's car passes by him, prompting Okiya to close the door to avoid Amuro. At the end of the Bell Train Mystery arc, Okiya is shown observing Amuro and Vermouth from a distance with a smirk, opening one of his eyes which looks like Akai's and giving a strong hint that he is Akai. If it is true then based on what has been said about Akai and Amuro's relation, it's likely he sees Amuro as an enemy, though not to the extent that Amuro views him.

===Masumi Sera===
[[Masumi Sera]] is Shuichi Akai's younger sister. To avoid disclosing his identity, Okiya tried to avoid acting conspicuously in front of her.

Dai Moroboshi, the alias Akai used while he was undercover in the Black Organization, comes from part of Char's real name, Casval Rem Deikun, with "Dei" pronounced as "Dai" (ダイ) in Japanese. *Okiya knew about Conan's tracking glasses and the detective badges.<ref name=X>Chapter 755 page 14: Communications Code</ref> Conan has never used the tracking glasses in front of Okiya before. Bourbon or a third party would not be privy to Conan's gadgets. The mechanism to operate Conan's glasses isn't obvious, so only someone who knows about their existence beforehand could recognize the glasses at Agasa's and figure out how to activate the tracking function. Shuichi Akai could have heard about the glasses in several ways. The first source is when [[James Black]] was kidnapped while he had [[Ayumi Yoshida|Ayumi]]'s detective badge. Conan used the badge to track down James Black. James was waiting to meet with Akai before he was kidnapped and drove away with Akai after he was rescued. Akai could have also heard about the tracking function from Jodie when Conan chased after Kir to prevent an assassination. == Background ==
Andre Camel is a member of the FBI who feels a debt to [[Shuichi Akai]] for ruining his infiltration of the Black Organization and the FBI's chances to capture [[Gin]] two years ago. Andre Camel is well built and has an ugly mug; Jodie calls him a gorilla at one point. He is an expert technical driver. He isn't married and doesn't have a family.

== Personality ==
Despite his rather hulking appearance, Camel is a nice guy who cares about the feelings of his fellow FBI agents. He can react quickly, as shown by his driving skills and his role in the return Kir plan, but doesn't always make the best choices, evidenced when his concern for an old man wound up ruining Shuichi Akai's cover in the Black Organization. He is also awkward, mostly failing to play the role of Jodie's lover in order to fool the police, and bringing up Akai in front of the still mourning Jodie.

Camel likes working out whenever he gets the chance; Akai calls him a "muscle-training maniac" because of that habit. He also likes to regularly frequent eating establishments where the food and/or drinks have met his approval, and has developed a strong liking for the Japanese cuisine. As a foreigner with learning only in the standard Japanese language, Camel is unfamiliar with local dialects and idioms common in everyday language.

== Plot overview ==
=== Organization's Counterattack (Manga: [[Volume_58#Kir_Transport_Case|599-601]], Anime: [[Clash of Red and Black|498-499]])===
Andre Camel initially appears to be suspicious FBI agent, possibly a [[Black Organization]] infiltrator. [[Jodie]] calles out to him right before the strategy meeting, and after showing her his badge, he tells her to hold on while he finishes his call to his wife. In reality, he most likely was contacting [[Shuichi Akai]] about details for the upcoming plan to return [[CIA]] agent [[Rena Mizunashi]] to the Black Organization that involves tricking the rest of the FBI as well.

During the strategy meeting, Camel encourages the FBI to consider a plan to move Kir quickly and points out he is an excellent technical driver and would be up for the mission. After the meeting adjourned, Jodie, who felt a bad vibe from Camel, asks Akai if he has seen Camel before. Akai lies, saying he hasn't, but tries to reassure Jodie by saying he would never forget an enemy face.

The following morning, the Black Organization launches their counterattack on the FBI in the hospital. They create several nearby accidents to cause a large rush of people into the hospital and then begin sending patients small bombs hidden inside gifts. Jodie is tasked with getting rid of the bomb that the Black Organization had mailed [[James Black]] in a pot of flowers. Camel, who had deserted his nearby post to inform Jodie of the incoming panicked crowd, volunteers to help dispose of the bomb, pointing out all the major roads were clogged with traffic because of the incidents the Black Organization created. Jodie is reluctant, but agrees when Camel claims to have extensive knowledge of the area.

Jodie takes the wheel at first, but Camel steals her driving spot after he tricks Jodie into looking for the source of a non-existent ticking sound in the trunk. Camel then remarks that he will drive off without her because he wants to take a shortcut that only a skilled driver like him could manage in the time before the bomb detonates. To Jodie's dismay, Camel's shortcut turns out to be sidewalks and the wrong the side of the road. He manages to make it to a bridge in time, and telling Jodie to grab the wheel, heaves the bomb into a river where it explodes harmlessly. Jodie calls James to report the success, and Camel smiles at Jodie's praise of his skill.

Camel returns with Jodie to the hospital and they and the rest of the FBI continue collecting bombs that the Black Organization had "gifted" to patients. The Black Organization, in order to lure the FBI agents busy collecting bombs to Rena Mizunashi's room, hack the TV signals in the hospital and broadcast an edited clip of Rena Mizunashi in a hospital gown saying she has recovered from her illness. Jodie rushes towards Mizunashi's room, and on the way sees Camel. Camel says that newcomers aren't told where Mizunashi's room is, and he asks if he should come along. Jodie tells him to keep collecting bombs.

Now that the FBI think the Black Organization has discovered the location of Rena Mizunashi, they hold an emergency meeting to decide on the logistics of fooling the Black Organization with three identical vans. Camel volunteers to drive the van with Rena Mizunashi and Jodie agrees because of his driving skill while disposing of the bomb earlier. Akai warns him not to be scared, "The fear of death is worst than death itself." Camel comments that he has no family to mourn if should he fail, which immediately raises Jodie's suspicions as Camel earlier told her he was calling his wife. As Camel prepares to climb into the van, Jodie confronts him and asks him to give up his driving responsibility to her. Jodie snatches the keys from him, but he knocks her out with a fist to the gut and leaves her propped up against the back of a car. Just before they roll out, James asks Camel if he has seen Jodie, but Camel denies seeing her.

The Black Organization tails the three vans with motorcycles and images the inside of the vans thermally. Camel continues steadily on a course looping back towards the hospital despite Vodka following him. Gin correctly guesses Rena Mizunashi is in the van Vodka is following and soon the three motorcycles and Gin's porsche converge on Camel's van. Camel reports this to James and tells him he will shake them off. At that movement, Kir hits Camel with a bomb she had been holding and the van spins out and skids against a railing to a halt. After Kir bails out, Gin orders Chianti to kill the seemingly unconscious Camel. Before she can do so, there is an explosion in the van. Camel quickly slips out of van on the far side at the same time as the explosion which gives the Black Organization the impression he was killed by it. The singed Camel contacts Akai to tell him the plan was a success, revealing that all his suspicious behavior so far was part of Akai's strategy.

==== Explaining the plan to the FBI ([[Volume_58#Kir_Transport_Case|604-605]], Anime: [[Clash of Red and Black|500]])====
With Kir safely replanted in the Organization, Akai explains Camel's involvement to the rest of the FBI. Akai had contacted Camel secretly, needing someone to volunteer to drive Kir in one of the three vans, pretend to crash, and then escape the detonating van to trick the Black Organization and the FBI into thinking Kir had been successfully recaptured. Out of the FBI, only Camel was skilled enough as a driver to crash a van precisely and escape an explosion. The original plan was for Camel to ride alone with Kir when the FBI moved her and explain that he wanted her to rejoin the Organization. That wound up being unnecessary because Eisuke had forced Kir to reveal she was awake. While Camel forcibly removed Eisuke from the room, Akai and Conan discussed a new plan with Kir. Camel was told to take out anyone interfering with him being the driver for Rena's van, which is why he knocked out Jodie.

A talent agency director was murdered at the New Beika Hotel and the police combed the building looking for foreigners who could speak Japanese. Camel was apprehended while he was jogging down the stairs as an exercise routine. Camel was hoping to hide the fact he was an FBI agent from the police, but when he mentions that he needs to stay fit for work, the Detective Boys and police became curious about his profession. Conan had to call Jodie to come and bail Camel out after the Detective Boys accused him of being a professional killer. Jodie added onto an earlier tale she told the police; she came to Japan after bungling at work and Camel had become worried and followed her to Japan...because he was her lover! Camel was caught off-guard by Jodie's story completely and his lack of believable acting made [[Wataru Takagi|Detective Takagi]] sense something was awkward.

The police ask the suspects to move to a different room while they investigate the crime scene. While they are walking, Jodie asks Camel what he had been doing in Japan two years ago. Camel reveals that two years ago, when Akai was still undercover as member of the Black Organization, he was the FBI agent that caused the mission to capture an executive member of the Black Organization to fail. When Akai had received his codename, he was to meet his new boss, [[Gin]], in a warehouse. The FBI planned a trap to capture Gin and staked out the warehouse. Instead of Gin arriving, a old man came in and sat down. Without thinking, Camel came out of hiding and shooed the old man away, telling him it was dangerous here. Gin never showed up and the Black Organization found out Akai was a spy. Because of that, eventually [[Akemi Miyano]], Akai's girlfriend, was murdered by the Black Organization. Camel felt he had a debt to repay to Akai, so when Akai asked if anyone was up for the plan to help return Rena Mizunashi to the Black Organization, Camel volunteered himself even though he was warned that it could cost his life.

Jodie snaps at Camel for bringing up Akai and storms out, and James Black chides Camel for forgetting Jodie had feelings for Akai so she is still sensitive about his death.

Later he spots Chianti and Gin's Porsche outside the department store, alerting the Jodie and Conan to the sniping plan.

While in the restaurant bathroom, Andre overhears a man's phone conversation, which is seemingly about how he regrets killing someone. After leaving his stall, Camel finds the speaker dead from apparent suicide via a poisoned candy. During this case, Camel meets [[Heiji]] and [[Kazuha]]. Andre is unfamiliar with the Kansai dialect which caused him to misinterpret several things about the dead man's phone conversation. Andre also meets [[Masumi Sera]], who strongly reminds Camel of someone. This feeling prompts him to send her picture to Jodie and James Black to see if they recognize her.

Near the end of the case, [[Rei Furuya|Bourbon]] walks up to Camel and asks him about [[Rikumichi Kusuda]], the undercover Black Organization member who killed himself while being chased by [[Shuichi Akai]] during the Black Organization and the FBI's standoff in [[Clash of Red and Black]]. Camel refuses to disclose any information as it's strictly confidential. [[Vermouth]], disguised as Jodie, then talks to Camel about Rikumichi, and Camel willingly opens up about it. After getting the information that they wanted, Bourbon and Vermouth leave. As the real Jodie approaches him, Camel is horrified to learn that he had made another grave error.

Jodie starts to piece together the information she has gathered and comes to the conclusion that Shuichi Akai is indeed alive. To confirm her speculation, she and Camel visit Raiha Pass, the site of Akai's apparent death. On their way to the pass, several cars, presumably from the Black Organization, corner Jodie and Camel. Camel surmises that since the Organization has also found out that Akai's alive, they're planning to attack. Camel begins to feel guilty again, due to his mistake probably costing Akai everything he's been planning.

Camel drives towards a rock tactically to jump past the Black Organization cars. After landing, he notices that the steering wheel is starting to rotate to the right and figures that the wheel must have been damaged by the jump stunt. As they're losing their edge in the chase, a voice from the back seat orders Camel to open the roof of the car. To his and Jodie's surprise, it is Shuichi Akai. Akai explains to the two of them that everything that's been going on is part of Conan's plan and that the Black Organization cars chasing them are actually from Japan's Secret Police.

== Plot overview ==
=== Organization's Counterattack (Manga: [[Volume_58#Kir_Transport_Case|599-601]], Anime: [[Clash of Red and Black|498-499]])===
Andre Camel initially appears to be suspicious FBI agent, possibly a [[Black Organization]] infiltrator. [[Jodie]] calles out to him right before the strategy meeting, and after showing her his badge, he tells her to hold on while he finishes his call to his wife. In reality, he most likely was contacting [[Shuichi Akai]] about details for the upcoming plan to return [[CIA]] agent [[Rena Mizunashi]] to the Black Organization that involves tricking the rest of the FBI as well.

During the strategy meeting, Camel encourages the FBI to consider a plan to move Kir quickly and points out he is an excellent technical driver and would be up for the mission. After the meeting adjourned, Jodie, who felt a bad vibe from Camel, asks Akai if he has seen Camel before. Akai lies, saying he hasn't, but tries to reassure Jodie by saying he would never forget an enemy face.

The following morning, the Black Organization launches their counterattack on the FBI in the hospital. They create several nearby accidents to cause a large rush of people into the hospital and then begin sending patients small bombs hidden inside gifts. Jodie is tasked with getting rid of the bomb that the Black Organization had mailed [[James Black]] in a pot of flowers. Camel, who had deserted his nearby post to inform Jodie of the incoming panicked crowd, volunteers to help dispose of the bomb, pointing out all the major roads were clogged with traffic because of the incidents the Black Organization created. Jodie is reluctant, but agrees when Camel claims to have extensive knowledge of the area.

Jodie takes the wheel at first, but Camel steals her driving spot after he tricks Jodie into looking for the source of a non-existent ticking sound in the trunk. Camel then remarks that he will drive off without her because he wants to take a shortcut that only a skilled driver like him could manage in the time before the bomb detonates. To Jodie's dismay, Camel's shortcut turns out to be sidewalks and the wrong the side of the road. He manages to make it to a bridge in time, and telling Jodie to grab the wheel, heaves the bomb into a river where it explodes harmlessly. Jodie calls James to report the success, and Camel smiles at Jodie's praise of his skill.

Camel returns with Jodie to the hospital and they and the rest of the FBI continue collecting bombs that the Black Organization had "gifted" to patients. The Black Organization, in order to lure the FBI agents busy collecting bombs to Rena Mizunashi's room, hack the TV signals in the hospital and broadcast an edited clip of Rena Mizunashi in a hospital gown saying she has recovered from her illness. Jodie rushes towards Mizunashi's room, and on the way sees Camel. Camel says that newcomers aren't told where Mizunashi's room is, and he asks if he should come along. Jodie tells him to keep collecting bombs.

Now that the FBI think the Black Organization has discovered the location of Rena Mizunashi, they hold an emergency meeting to decide on the logistics of fooling the Black Organization with three identical vans. Camel volunteers to drive the van with Rena Mizunashi and Jodie agrees because of his driving skill while disposing of the bomb earlier. Akai warns him not to be scared, "The fear of death is worst than death itself." Camel comments that he has no family to mourn if should he fail, which immediately raises Jodie's suspicions as Camel earlier told her he was calling his wife. As Camel prepares to climb into the van, Jodie confronts him and asks him to give up his driving responsibility to her. Jodie snatches the keys from him, but he knocks her out with a fist to the gut and leaves her propped up against the back of a car. Just before they roll out, James asks Camel if he has seen Jodie, but Camel denies seeing her.

The Black Organization tails the three vans with motorcycles and images the inside of the vans thermally. Camel continues steadily on a course looping back towards the hospital despite Vodka following him. Gin correctly guesses Rena Mizunashi is in the van Vodka is following and soon the three motorcycles and Gin's porsche converge on Camel's van. Camel reports this to James and tells him he will shake them off. At that movement, Kir hits Camel with a bomb she had been holding and the van spins out and skids against a railing to a halt. After Kir bails out, Gin orders Chianti to kill the seemingly unconscious Camel. Before she can do so, there is an explosion in the van. Camel quickly slips out of van on the far side at the same time as the explosion which gives the Black Organization the impression he was killed by it. The singed Camel contacts Akai to tell him the plan was a success, revealing that all his suspicious behavior so far was part of Akai's strategy.

With Kir safely replanted in the Organization, Akai explains Camel's involvement to the rest of the FBI. Akai had contacted Camel secretly, needing someone to volunteer to drive Kir in one of the three vans, pretend to crash, and then escape the detonating van to trick the Black Organization and the FBI into thinking Kir had been successfully recaptured. Out of the FBI, only Camel was skilled enough as a driver to crash a van precisely and escape an explosion. The original plan was for Camel to ride alone with Kir when the FBI moved her and explain that he wanted her to rejoin the Organization. That wound up being unnecessary because Eisuke had forced Kir to reveal she was awake. While Camel forcibly removed Eisuke from the room, Akai and Conan discussed a new plan with Kir. Camel was told to take out anyone interfering with him being the driver for Rena's van, which is why he knocked out Jodie.

A talent agency director was murdered at the New Beika Hotel and the police combed the building looking for foreigners who could speak Japanese. Camel was apprehended while he was jogging down the stairs as an exercise routine. Camel was hoping to hide the fact he was an FBI agent from the police, but when he mentions that he needs to stay fit for work, the Detective Boys and police became curious about his profession. Conan had to call Jodie to come and bail Camel out after the Detective Boys accused him of being a professional killer. Jodie added onto an earlier tale she told the police; she came to Japan after bungling at work and Camel had become worried and followed her to Japan...because he was her lover! Camel was caught off-guard by Jodie's story completely and his lack of believable acting made [[Wataru Takagi|Detective Takagi]] sense something was awkward.

The police ask the suspects to move to a different room while they investigate the crime scene. While they are walking, Jodie asks Camel what he had been doing in Japan two years ago. Camel reveals that two years ago, when Akai was still undercover as member of the Black Organization, he was the FBI agent that caused the mission to capture an executive member of the Black Organization to fail. When Akai had received his codename, he was to meet his new boss, [[Gin]], in a warehouse. The FBI planned a trap to capture Gin and staked out the warehouse. Instead of Gin arriving, a old man came in and sat down. Without thinking, Camel came out of hiding and shooed the old man away, telling him it was dangerous here. Gin never showed up and the Black Organization found out Akai was a spy. Because of that, eventually [[Akemi Miyano]], Akai's girlfriend, was murdered by the Black Organization. Camel felt he had a debt to repay to Akai, so when Akai asked if anyone was up for the plan to help return Rena Mizunashi to the Black Organization, Camel volunteered himself even though he was warned that it could cost his life.

Later he spots Chianti and Gin's Porsche outside the department store, alerting the Jodie and Conan to the sniping plan.

After leaving his stall, Camel finds the speaker dead from apparent suicide via a poisoned candy. During this case, Camel meets [[Heiji]] and [[Kazuha]]. Andre is unfamiliar with the Kansai dialect which caused him to misinterpret several things about the dead man's phone conversation. Andre also meets [[Masumi Sera]], who strongly reminds Camel of someone. This feeling prompts him to send her picture to Jodie and James Black to see if they recognize her.

Camel refuses to disclose any information as it's strictly confidential. [[Vermouth]], disguised as Jodie, then talks to Camel about Rikumichi, and Camel willingly opens up about it. After getting the information that they wanted, Bourbon and Vermouth leave. As the real Jodie approaches him, Camel is horrified to learn that he had made another grave error.

Jodie starts to piece together the information she has gathered and comes to the conclusion that Shuichi Akai is indeed alive. To confirm her speculation, she and Camel visit Raiha Pass, the site of Akai's apparent death. On their way to the pass, several cars, presumably from the Black Organization, corner Jodie and Camel. Camel surmises that since the Organization has also found out that Akai's alive, they're planning to attack. Camel begins to feel guilty again, due to his mistake probably costing Akai everything he's been planning.

Camel drives towards a rock tactically to jump past the Black Organization cars. After landing, he notices that the steering wheel is starting to rotate to the right and figures that the wheel must have been damaged by the jump stunt. As they're losing their edge in the chase, a voice from the back seat orders Camel to open the roof of the car. To his and Jodie's surprise, it is Shuichi Akai. Akai explains to the two of them that everything that's been going on is part of Conan's plan and that the Black Organization cars chasing them are actually from Japan's Secret Police.

Shortly after Megure had come to the police force, he was involved in a case in which he would meet his future wife, [[Midori Megure|Midori]]. As a result of the case, he has taken to wearing a hat in public in order to hide a scar which he gained and his own self-consciousness about how he came to his marriage.<ref>Manga Chapter 286: An Unexpected Motive</ref> Megure was also a good friend of star detective story novelist [[Yusaku Kudo]], and would in the past consult him about one case or another. Megure is almost always there on the scene when a murder occurs, always interviewing the suspects, and acting as the commanding officer of the group of police he brings along with him, among them [[Wataru Takagi]], [[Miwako Sato]], [[Ninzaburo Shiratori]], and [[Detective Chiba|Chiba]]. == Personality ==
Megure is a capable veteran officer who cares much for his underlings, but he is prone to occasional shouting fits whenever something does not go right or when his temper gets the better of him. He also has little patience for fools, but tends to be a bit too conservative, limiting his ability for flexible thinking.

After [[Shinichi Kudo|Shinichi]] solved their first mutual case for him, he has regularly consulted him in difficult cases and considered him a great help.<ref>Manga Chapter 207: Hidden Within The Depth Of The Heart</ref> In stark contrast to this, he tends not to think much of [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] and the [[Detective Boys]], usually thinking of them as a nuisance until they solve the ongoing case for him. Likewise, from their common police days, he has no high regard for [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]], and he thinks that he may actually be under some kind of jinx, since wherever Kogoro shows up, there is always some murder case nearby (a fact which actually conforms to Conan, which in later cases he seems to have realized).

In some anime originals, Megure has the habit of trying to tell the culprit about the morals of doing wrong, which he rarely does in the manga series.

[[Midori Megure|Midori]] is Megure's wife. During a case along time ago, she insisted on being a decoy for a serial killer. This is explained in Episode 217-218. Juzo jumped in front of the car to save her. While she was hit, he only hit his head. This is explained why he never takes off his hat, which is to hide the scar. She survived and later they were married.

Megure is on very friendly terms with [[Yusaku Kudo|Yusaku]] and respects his deductive powers, so much so that he sometimes looks to him for guidance on tough cases.

==== Shinichi Kudo ====
[[Shinichi Kudo]] is respected and seen as a helpful guide on cases by Megure. Their working relationship began with [[The Locked Room in the Sky: Shinichi Kudo's First Case|Shinichi's first solo case aboard an airplane to New York City]]. Shinichi's habit of helping the police likely comes from his father, [[Yusaku Kudo]], whom Megure also respects. Megure often comments how cases would be much easier if "Kudo-kun" was still around. Conan often pretends that Shinichi tells him the truth to cases by phone so that Megure is more accepting of Conan's deductions.

In episode 218, Juzo shielded Sonoko from a serial killer. The serial killer was going to kill Sonoko with a iron club until Juzo shielded her at last second. The killer was arrested and Juzo went to the hospital. Sonoko, Ran, Conan, Kogoro and the Superintendent went to visit him.

[[Kogoro Mouri]] and Megure used to work together in the past before Kogoro left the police force. Megure found Kogoro's work behavior and poor deductions irritating. Now that Kogoro has become the "Sleeping Kogoro", Megure's respect for him has increased somewhat. It is a running gag that Megure refers to Kogoro as a shinigami or a 'death-god', because of the sheer number of murder cases that Kogoro coincidentally has come by. == Background ==
Tomoaki Araide is the son of [[Kogoro Mouri]]'s physician, Yoshiteru Araide, and also on occasion the basketball coach and school medic at Teitan High, the school [[Shinichi Kudo]], Ran Mouri and [[Sonoko Suzuki]] attended. Tomoaki had studied at the University of Tokyo; during this time, he had treated a young woman named [[Hikaru Yasumoto]], who was later hired into the Araide household as a maid.

When Yoshiteru Araide invited Kogoro Mouri, his daughter Ran and [[Conan Edogawa]] to dinner in his house, Conan noticed that Ran was paying a lot of unusual attention on Araide. The sojourn, however, quickly turned into a murder case as Yoshiteru Araide was found electrocuted in his bathtub. The murderer turned out to be Yoko Araide, Araide's wife and Tomoaki's stepmother, who had avenged the suicide of her dear friend Chiaki (Tomoaki's mother) over her husband's extramarital affairs four years previously. Although he had been offered a position at a clinic in Aomori, Tomoaki stayed on and maintained his late father's practise. However, it was later learned that his identity had been usurped by [[Vermouth]], as a disguise to track down [[Ai Haibara]]. ===The Unseen Angle of the Darkness (Manga: 234-237, Anime: 170-171)===
Kogoro Mouri visits Ariade clinic with Ran and Kogoro in tow to receive the results of his health checkup from his doctor Yoshiteru Araide. Ran is looking for the bathroom when she meets Araide Tomoaki, 25 years old, temporarily working for his father’s clinic until he moves to Beika hospital. Tomoaki Araide’s father was then killed in his bathtub via electrocution. Detective Takagi, Inspector Megure, and other nameless policemen investigate the murder.

Conan investigates and discovers Yoko Araide, Yoshiteru Araide's second wife was the murderer. She caused a blackout to occur while she was supposedly on the phone, and during the ensuing darkness, snuck to the bathtub and put the shaver in the bathtub. She then snuck back and asked the housemaid [[Hikaru Yasumoto]] to flip the circuit breaker, causing Yoshiteru Araide to be electrocuted.

The motive was that Dr. Araide’s mom, Chiaki died four years ago, while drunk driving, although she is supposed to have hated alcohol. She left a message to Yoko Araide to “Please take care of Tomoaki. Don’t let him follow his dad.” A journal Yoko found later indicates that Yoshiteru Araide was a flirtatious guy who drove Chiaki to drink. Meanwhile, Ariade becomes very upset that his family is suspected by the police and that a trap was laid (by Conan) to catch the murderer. Araide rushes to the bathroom and overhears “Mouri’s” offer to conceal some of the details of the crime to protect the maid Hikaru’s conscience. This offer proves crucial as Vermouth does not know this detail because the records of investigation were altered to protect the maid’s conscience.

===Teitan High School's Ghost Story (Manga: 457-459, Anime: 361-362)===
Dr. Araide returns and helps with a school ghost mystery case. He seems to only know the basic details of Vermouth's impersonation, which he was the victim of. He states that he was in Japan two years ago when he treated a student who fell down some stairs. Araide attempts to examine “sleeping detective” Sonoko, and is waived off by Conan.

Araide seems surprised when Ran says he is nice and in the end he gets a call from Jodie. Araide says he is surprised how well liked the disguised Vermouth’s Araide was based on the testimony of the students and teachers and asks Jodie if Vermouth is really a bad person. Jodie becomes exceedingly grumpy and yells at Araide that Vermouth was only copying Araide's personality.

===The Secret Path to School (Manga: 507, Anime: 428)===
A missing girl caught in a hit and run leads the detective boys to Araide’s hospital. Araide then starts raising two stray kittens while seeking new owners for them.

===Non-[[canon]] depictions===
In the OVA story "[[The Stranger from Ten Years Later]]", Tomoaki Araide appears to have developed feelings for Ran and proposes to her ten years in the future. Ran, however, rejects him, saying she's willing to wait another ten years for Shinichi's return. However, since this story was all part of a fever hallucination [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] was suffering at that time, it can be dismissed as non-relevant.

== Background ==
Sumiko Kobayashi attended Teitan Elementary and was in the 18th graduating class, two classes above [[Detective Chiba]]. She became the new class teacher of [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] and the [[Detective Boys]] after their previous teacher had married and retired. Her harsh behavior towards her charges had earned her the nickname "oni-baba" (hag) amongst her students.

One night, the Detective Boys came into the school to investigate strange occurrences involving busts from art class and an anatomy model from the sick room, which had been mysteriously moved around, and the mysterious absence of the vice principal. The busts and the model had actually been used by Sumiko for a rehearsal for the next parent-teacher conference. Sumiko is in fact very fond of children, but her kindness had caused her to have very little control over her class at her previous school, resulting in a disastrous parent-teacher conference. To fix this, she had forced herself to be strict and harsh when she transferred to Teitan Elementary, but after the Detective Boys discovered her nicer side, she decided to be herself again and has become very popular with her students ever since.<ref>Manga Chapter 155: Is Someone There?</ref>

On one occasion, she accompanied Conan and the Detective Boys to an interview which became a murder investigation as they found the reporter slain. After witnessing Conan in action, she announced her desire to join the Detective Boys and become their manager - a decision which was immediately vetoed<ref>Manga Chapter 517: The Detective Boys</ref> and is commonly neglected in the field.<ref>Manga Chapter 691: Conan vs. The Detective Boys</ref>

As it turned out later, when Sumiko was still a small child, she had confronted two no-good juveniles attempting to steal mangas from a bookshop. When the culprits contemptuously shoved her aside, a young boy intervened on her behalf, cooly citing a paragraph from Japanese law concerning theft. As a sign of gratitude, Sumiko bought her rescuer a drink ornamented with a circle of sakura flowers made from the straw wrapper, as a symbol of goodness and justice (referring to the sakura shaped Japanese police badges). It would not be until many years later that she would encounter him again as a member of the police force, under the name of [[Ninzaburo Shiratori]].<ref>Manga Chapters 687-689: Sakura Girl Case</ref>

Shiratori recognized Sumiko on first sight, and it turned out he had held deep feelings for her all these years. However, he wanted to win properly Sumiko's affection first and then tell her about what he viewed as the hand of fate, so he kept silent about their first encounter and banned the Detective Kids from helping him in any way. This scheme backfired when she found out that she had a dead lookalike in the police department whom Shiratori had once pursued romantically (unbeknownst to her, that was because Shiratori mistook her for Sumiko)...

Thinking that Shiratori considered her a mere replacement for [[Miwako Sato|Sato]], Sumiko was understandably hurt and started distancing herself from him, even after Shiratori personally explained their common past to her - a move which came at a bad time, because she had become an unwitting (and the sole) witness to a murder and the murderer would therefore try everything to silence her. And for worse, Sumiko's own memories of their encounter were much more vague than Shiratori's own. so she thought Sato was his "girl of destiny".<ref>Manga Chapters 707: The Sakura Girl is...?</ref> When the culprit was apprehended and Shiratori subdued him with words, Sumiko did indeed remember Shiratori as her childhood savior/friend, and the relationship was reaffirmed.<ref>Manga Chapters 708: The Sakura in Full Bloom</ref>

== Personality ==
Sumiko is very kind and fond of children, considering them the most wonderful thing in the world. Sumiko is also quite timid and sensitive, not to mention that she suffers from serious stagefright. Even though she has appointed herself the manager of the Detective Boys, the kids often leave her out of case or ignore her warnings. She was also quite hurt when she believed [[Ninzaburo Shiratori|Inspector Shiratori]] was only interested in her because of her resemblance to [[Miwako Sato]] - a resemblance so striking it even fooled Sato's close associates [[Detective Chiba|Chiba]] and [[Yumi Miyamoto|Yumi]].<ref>Manga Chapter 706: Kobayashi-sensei's Misunderstanding</ref><ref>Manga Chapter 707: The Sakura Girl is...</ref>

In contrast of Sumiko's physical resemblance to Sato, however, the two women have almost entirely different personality traits: While Sato is reckless, outspoken, daring, and impulsive, Sumiko is more gentle, softspoken, cautious, and careful in any given situation.

== Plot overview ==
=== A Harsh Teacher ===
In her first appearance, Sumiko was known by the students of Class 1-B, including, Conan and the Detective Boys, as a strict,mean teacher, who was always disciplining her class, never showing any kindness. Her initial personality, led to her students nicknaming her,"Old Demon Hag".Then, one night, the [[Detective Boys]], decided to figure out why many dolls were missing one after another. Conan deduces the one behind the "kidnappings", was Sumiko herself, which relieved the children. Sumiko finally revealed the reason behind her "dictator-like" teaching, was that, in the past, two of her students fought at a parent-teacher conference, because of her lack in disciple.She would come at Teitan Elementary at night to practice for the next parent-teacher conference, so there be no more fights.However, with some suggestions from the Detective Boys, she changed her teaching style, and became more well liked.

Later on, she would introduce Ai Haibara, as the new student of Class1-B, who would also become an official member of the Detective Boys.

=== A Manager is Born ===
Sumiko agrees to give the Detective Boys a ride to a writer's home, since he wanted to do a report on them for their involvement in complicated cases. However, the gang didn't expect a dead writer. When [[Inspector Megure]] and [[Wataru Takagi]] arrive at the scene, both believe that Sumiko is Sato because, without her glasses on, she bears a scary resemblance to the officer. Soon Conan tries to prove the Detective Boy's skills in catching the criminal, however, he also had to conceal his vast intelligence, so his secret wouldn't be questioned by Sumiko. Conan and his friends manage to drop hints on who the real culprit is which leads to his arrestment.

After the case, Sumiko dubbed herself the "manager" of the group, wanting to solve and capture "bad guys" along with them.

Sumiko has been with the group on many cases, despite their disapproval or has been the Detective Boys' reference to call her, if they're involved in a case. Once, she devised a riddle for the students to deduce without the aid of Conan, so some new students would feel more welcome. Sumiko, along with Ayumi, Mitsuhiko, Haibara, and Genta, listen to Conan's story of how Shinichi (himself) and Ran as children had their first "coded mystery". Her main reason for becoming the "manager" seems to stem from her intense interests in mystery novels and her respect for the police.

=== A Lost Love, Finally Rekindled ===

During another one of the kids' cases, Sumiko is called to pick up the children by Megure. However, Shiratori (who had learned about Sumiko's existence few minutes before and was wondering if she was "the girl" from his past, since the other non-Sato candidate turned out to be the culprit of the case) offered that she should take them home in his car, while holding her hand in a romantic style. Over the next few days, he has made constant visits to where she works, warning her of any and all danger in the vicinity, which sparks Sumiko developing a crush on him, unaware of their actual history.

Later, Shiratori again warns Sumiko of a vicious, serial purse thief, who might be a woman, who's still at large. During the conversation, the latter asks why Shiratori kept calling her, and he simply replied, "Because I worry about you". The Detective Boys soon arrive and ask her if they want to come to a festival with her and she agrees. Soon, she loses sight of the children and as she's trying to find her way around, she becomes a witness of a murder. She was able to see the culprit's silhouette and hear their voice.

The next day, Sumiko goes to the police station, with the kids to testify what she saw. She meets [[Yumi Miyamoto]] and [[Detective Chiba]], who confuse her with Sato until Shiratori clears up the misunderstanding and escorts Sumiko to a conference so they can discuss the case in more detail. While on her way back from the restroom, she sees Sato from afar and is initially ''very'' happy and giddy at the thought of a woman who looks like her... but then she learns of Shiratori's former interest in Sato. This leads her to suspect that Shiratori only liked her because of her physical traits to the female officer, and depresses her greatly.

From then on Sumiko begins to treat Shiratori harshly and, after seeing that the three main suspects weren't the criminal, she coldly tells Shiratori not to bother her anymore and leaves. The next day at school school, he tells her the real reason why he liked her, but she dismisses it, as she believes Sato was "the girl of destiny" and cannot remember their supposed "meeting". However, while working late at night, she was almost killed by the criminal in order to silence her, but is saved by Shiratori, the Detective Boys and Sato.

Sumiko then finally remembers Shiratori, after he calls out the culprit in almost exactly the way he called out the shoplifters to help her. Shiratori then confesses he was always in love with her and Sumiko blushes and replies, "Yes.". Later, she makes a special bento for Shiratori, signifying that the two are now a couple.

As a child, Sumiko instantly became Shiratori's true love, and was the very reason why he entered the police force. They had confronted a bunch of shoplifters together as children; Shiratori had prevented her from getting hurt and also stopped the theft, and as thanks she gave him a cup of cola with a band made of straw wrappers, shaped like the ''sakura'' blossoms that look like the symbol of the Japanese Police.

For quite a while Shiratori believed that [[Miwako Sato]] was the girl he had loved since childhood and changed his life forever (due to her resemblance with the "girl of destiny"), hence he was interested in her. At the beginning of a case that revealed parts of Shiratori's past, he realized Sato wasn't his true love, and even if she was, she had chosen [[Wataru Takagi]] over him. Even worse, at the end of the said case, Shiratori was left depressed and exhausted, since another woman who could have been his long-lost love actually turned out to be the culprit. However, Ayumi cheered him up by saying the exact same lines that the girl from his past said and by making the same design on the wristband she gave him. Shiratori desperately asked who taught her that, and Ayumi told him it was her school teacher, Sumiko. Then, at that exact moment, Sumiko came to pick up the Detective Boys upon [[Juzo Megure]]'s request.

When Shiratori laid his eyes on Sumiko, he instantly recognized her as his true "woman of destiny", and their relationship began to spark. He would always warn her of any dangers nearby where she worked or lived, which caused Sumiko to develop romantic feelings. In fact, his concern over her, constant visits, and kindness towards her, often caused her to blush deeply.

When Sumiko became a witness in a murder investigation, she learned of her resemblance to Detective Sato. And after hearing about Shiratori's former crush on her from other policemen, she thought that the only reason he was so interested in her was because of her striking resemblance to Sato. This left her not only shocked, but also hurt, thinking Shiratori didn't have feelings for her. This wasn't helped by Shiratori not having told her about their shared past, as he was waiting for the right moment to do so.

Not knowing the real reason why Shiratori liked her, Sumiko began to act coldly and harshly towards him. Even when he confessed his true feelings to her and told her about their meeting, she brushed it off, thinking Shiratori confused her with Detective Sato. However, it was all cleared up by the end of the case, when he not only saved her from the culprit, but also coolly recited a law the same way he did as a child in that book store, which finally reminded her of their first meeting. Shiratori romantically confessed to her, which made her blush. She replied with a quick and simple "Yes".

Afterwards, the two began dating, and Sumiko started giving Shiratori bentos every morning for his "energy demanding" work. On White Day, Shiratori was seen with many presents inside his car for her. Later on, she was shown with all the delicious sweets Shiratori had brought for her, at her house, happily not knowing where to begin.
