The story follows the adventures of [[Shinichi Kudo]] (also known as Jimmy Kudo in Case Closed), a young detective prodigy who was inadvertently shrunk into a child's body due to a [[APTX 4869|poison]] he was force-fed by members of a [[Black Organization|criminal syndicate]]. Neighbor and family friend [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]] strongly suggested Shinichi hide his identity to prevent them from killing him and the people he cares about, so Shinichi takes the name [[Conan Edogawa]]. He goes to live with his childhood friend [[Ran Mouri]] and her father, [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]], and tries to use Kogoro's detective agency as a way to find the people who shrank him—without letting Ran figure out who he really is.

S. California's UTB, United Television Broadcasting's free digital television station began to re-broadcast already dubbed Case Closed episodes on August 21st, 2011. The next two-episode block was scheduled for Saturday, August 27th, followed by two more episodes on Sunday, August 28th. The episodes were broadcasted at 6:30 a.m and repeated at 10:30 a.m the same day. A one-episode block also aired at 10:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays as well.

Incidentally, the catchphrase for [[Masumi Sera]] is 'Case Closed' (whether it's intended as a reference or coincidental is unspecified).

As of 2013, only one Case Closed branded video game was released, which was [[Detective Conan: The Mirage of Remembrance|Case Closed: The Mirapolis Investigation]], which was a Nintendo Wii exclusive title and released only in Japan and Europe. It features the English voice cast from the Anime for the English version, and has minor changes in script. It is so far the only English DC Game.

As of April 2013, Funimation has renewed the Case Closed license "For Future Use". Additionally on April 2nd 2013, Funimation announced Starting April 16th 2013 seasons 1-5 would be made available digitally through many online vendors, starting with iTunes, Playstation Network and Xbox Live. Season 1 will be available April 16th, season 2 and 3 in May, and Season 4 and 5 in June. Movie release dates have not been announced, however a hint shown in the description hints at a possible new season. Each episode will be 99 cents a piece. As of October 2014 at NY Comic Con's Crunchy Roll panel, they announced that "Case Closed" would be added to their roster. Later they began subtitling the Japanese episodes at episode 754. The page for the series uses the Case Closed banner from Funimation. Originally the episodes were posted on Saturdays, a week after they air in Japan, but now they will begin to be posted on Wednesdays. As of March 21, 2016 they have subtitled up to episode 812, they do not subtitle specials or movies.

As of January 2016, English language Netflix began to stream episodes under the title "Case Closed". The page for the series uses the Case Closed banner from Funimation. They obtained the rights to air fifty-two episodes in Japanese with subtitles, from episode 748-799. The show's maturity rating is listed as TV-14.

== Critical reception ==
The series has been well received in Japan, with the anime adaptation ranking in the top twenty in [[Magazines#Animage|Animage]]'s polls between 1996 until 2000, where it dropped below the top twenty. In the Japanese TV anime ranking, Detective Conan often ranked the top six. It has even been used as a mascot to promote citizens to follow the law. The English adaptation has not been as equally popular as in Japan, and has been criticized for the character name changes.

The manga is a huge success and it is continued to be published. It won the prestigious Shogakukan Manga Award for the shōnen category in 2000. Some of its volumes appear on the lists of best-selling manga.

The series is successful in Asia and Europe, where some countries translated most of the episodes and volumes. Due to the high popularity DC is re-broadcasting in many countries after the original premieres.

Although popular in many other countries, Case Closed was not as successful in the US, most likely due to poor advertising, name changes, and script changes around Japanese people and culture.

Due to this, FUNimation's dubbed version of "Case Closed" was cancelled at only 130 episodes.

Although, many fans wanted the anime version of Detective Conan to be successful in North America, excluding the renamed character names, it did not do well and still failed and got several negative reviews, and therefore in 2018, FUNimation Entertainment lost the rights to "Case Closed", along with "KenIchi: The Mightiest Disciple".

However, the manga is still released by VIZ Media.

Even though Detective Conan is a [[Glossary#Shōnen|Shōnen]], its audience is composed of a substantial proportion of female viewers and readers. The series also seems to attract all ages.

Within the [[Detective Conan]] universe, one of the most notable [[Recurring Tropes|recurring tropes]] is the illogical, irrational, or outright contradictory behavior of a considerable number of characters. Sometimes, the easy explanation for such seemingly dangerous pattern is that [[Gosho Aoyama]] is artificially prolonging a story arc, by preventing a quick breakthrough. In that case, a plot device usually referred to as [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plot_device#Plot_armor plot armor] prevents anything too nasty from happening to those characters who appear to behave irrationally. Any optimal plan to tackle the Black Organization would begin by staging an explain-everything-to-everyone meeting with [[Ai Haibara]], [[Yukiko Kudo]], [[Yusaku Kudo]], [[Heiji Hattori]], [[Shuichi Akai]], [[Jodie Starling]], [[James Black]], [[Andre Camel]], [[Mary Sera]], [[Masumi Sera]], [[Hiroshi Agasa]], [[Rei Furuya]], [[Yuya Kazami]], and, potentially, [[Koumei]] and [[Shukichi Haneda]]. Conan is the only character who knows the importance of each of them, and some of their links to the Black Organization. As such, it would make sense for him to reveal to each of them every single piece of information he knows, and vice versa. Yet, he failed to do so. Among the most important non-shared facts:

== Arc Mystery ==
An arc mystery usually takes the form of identifying the true allegiances of various mysterious characters that appear over the course of 100-300 chapters. So far they have all started with the introduction of a codenamed Black Organization agent and ended with a clash related to that agent where various allegiances and backstories are revealed. The main arc mysteries so far are the Vermouth arc, the Kir arc, the Bourbon and Akai arc, and the Rum arc. There are several tropes that apply especially to this long mystery subtype.

=== Arc mysteries become easier towards their ends ===
In arc mysteries, clues are released so that the mystery becomes easier to solve towards the end of the arc. Clues towards the beginning are often better hidden and require more analysis to interpret correctly. More overt clues and bits of backstory that provide hints appear with increasing frequency nearer to the end of the arc.

=== Arc suspects include protagonists and antagonists ===
Arc mysteries usually involve at least one Black Organization member and several other characters who are suspicious but who oppose the Black Organization in some form.

==== Overly suspicious often equals red herring ====
Overly suspicious characters are often red herrings on the side of good, while seemingly innocuous characters are more likely to be the opponent. Suspicious protagonist characters prior to their allegiance reveal are often shown lurking and watching from the shadows, asking prying questions, and saying vague mysterious quotes that could be taken as threats. Innocuous antagonists are not shown lurking as often or asking as many questions. Towards the end of an arc, antagonists may begin to act slightly more suspiciously. This coincides with clues becoming easier to identify and interpret.

Quotes intended to mislead are relatively easy to identify.

* They are vague, forcing the reader to make assumptions about the speaker, the subject, or what they are referring to. The goal is to trick the reader into filling in the blanks using the immediate context instead of the true context.

* They sound mysterious or threatening.

When the two characters with similar lines are a known antagonist and a suspect with unknown allegiance, often the goal is trick the reader into thinking the two are allies or alike.

These sorts of trap quotes are perhaps best countered by simply ignoring them and focusing on other evidence. With a few exceptions, mysterious lines are rarely helpful in figuring out people's allegiances, especially since the actual context of the quote may not be revealed for some time. A character's actions always speak louder than their words.

The list of suspects who turned out to be members of the Black Organization (and were seemingly loyal for at least part of their character development) who did approach Ai Haibara closely or demonstrated significant awareness of Ai Haibara include:

=== Misleading dialogue ===
Gosho frequently manipulates the reader's sense of suspicion with dialogue that sounds mysterious and threatening, or is misleading without the appropriate context. The technique works well because dialogue is pliable; it is easier to create deceptive dialogue than it is to create deceptive action. Gosho also uses especially shocking or quotable lines towards the end of cases to distract from other more useful clues that might have appeared.

* Gin talking to Vodka about searching for someone that initially sounds like it fits the description of Shinichi, but actually refers to Shiho's escape.
* Jodie uses the expression "A secret makes a woman, woman" after Vermouth is shown saying it. She and James Black both use "Cool Guy" which Vermouth wrote on one of her pictures. Both usages make sense in proper context: Jodie uses Vermouth's line because she heard Vermouth say it when she killed her father. The FBI raided Vermouth's office and saw Conan's picture labelled cool guy.
* James asks if Akai brought him to Japan to "make (Akai's) lover come back to (Akai)" Akai affirms this and says that he wants "his lover (koibito) to regret they ever left me with tears of blood."<ref name=327p18>Manga Volume 32, File 10, page 18: "A Stupid Plan"</ref>. Akai's "lover" is a reference to the ironic codename he gave Gin: "koibito" meaning lover. He later makes Gin cry the foretold tears of blood when Akai's bullet grazes Gin's cheek in the events of "Black Impact". That quote also alludes to Akemi, Akai's actual lover whom Gin killed.
* Camel communicating with Akai and Conan during Clash of Red and Black was made to sound like he was a spy sent by the Black Organization to infiltrate the FBI.
* Okiya's dialogue with Conan: "I've known his face for a very long time... There's no way I could be mistaken." It sounded threatening, but in context referred to Bourbon impersonating Akai.
* Sera, while deleting Haibara's picture from her computer: "Deletion. For data at least ... is an easy task to accomplish". It sounds threatening, but Masumi has no ill intention towards Haibara at all.
* Gin and Mary's similar quotes about a demon in the darkness.</spoiler>

Quotes intended to mislead are relatively easy to identify.
* They often sound poetic.
* They are vague, forcing the reader to make assumptions about the speaker, the subject, or what they are referring to. The goal is to trick the reader into filling in the blanks using the immediate context instead of the true context.
:*Sometimes no one is specifically named in the quote, but someone is alluded to via terms like "that person".
:*When only one half of a two-sided conversation is shown there may be an attempt to trick the reader into assuming the other half is someone else.
::*Sometimes two halves of separate conversations are shown together to imply two characters are contacting each other when they are actually contacting third parties. Such trick conversations have several hallmarks. They almost always take place by voice (phone call) or writing (text). They are vague, and do not contain any of the usual personalization that would clearly indicate who the speaker was speaking to(such as using names). Parts of the conversation and replies are sometimes omitted. Conversation may sound more like a series of monologues than a dialogue.
* They often take the form of a monologue or character thought.
* They sound mysterious or threatening.
* They are restated or repeated by another character<ref>"Cool guy": Vermouth, Jodie, and James; "Demon in the Darkness": Gin and Mary</ref>. When the two characters with similar lines are a known antagonist and a suspect with unknown allegiance, often the goal is trick the reader into thinking the two are allies or alike.

These sorts of trap quotes are perhaps best countered by simply ignoring them and focusing on other evidence. With a few exceptions, mysterious lines are rarely helpful in figuring out people's allegiances, especially since the actual context of the quote may not be revealed for some time. A character's actions always speak louder than their words.

Within the [[Detective Conan]] universe, one of the most notable [[Recurring Tropes|recurring tropes]] is the lack of information sharing that could potentially help the cause of individuals or groups. While this is mostly evident between the protagonists, antagonists are not immune from it. Almost everyone among the main characters, as of file 1054, is hiding (or has done so in the past) certain pieces of information from other characters whose allegiance is beyond suspect. The whole phaenomenon constitutes a single but significant portion of a number of [[Illogical and Irrational Behavior|illogical and irrational]] behaviors by many characters.

===Conan Edogawa===
[[Conan]] has withold numerous useful pieces of information regarding the [[Black Organization]] and the past of certain individuals from a multitude of proven allies. In particular, what was withold from whom seems arbitrary, and only serves the purpose to lengthen the overall story. Any optimal plan to tackle the Black Organization would begin by staging an explain-everything-to-everyone meeting with [[Ai Haibara]], [[Yukiko Kudo]], [[Yusaku Kudo]], [[Heiji Hattori]], [[Shuichi Akai]], [[Jodie Starling]], [[James Black]], [[Andre Camel]], [[Mary Sera]], [[Masumi Sera]], [[Hiroshi Agasa]], [[Rei Furuya]], [[Yuya Kazami]], and, potentially, [[Koumei]] and [[Shukichi Haneda]]. Conan is the only character who knows the importance of each of them, and some of their links to the Black Organization. As such, it would make sense for him to reveal to each of them every single piece of information he knows, and vice versa. Yet, he failed to do so. Among the most important non-shared facts:
*He failed to report to any Japanese police force the existence of both the Black Organization, and [[APTX 4869]]. Not doing so at the very beginning did not make much sense, despite [[Agasa]]'s comment in file 2. It was not until the end of the Vermouth arc that he collaborated with a police force (the [[F.B.I.]]), and not until the end of the Bourbon arc that he collaborated with a Japanese force (the [[P.S.B.]]) against the Black Organization.
*He failed to update his own parents with most of the ongoing discoveries about the Black Organization. As they, prior to moving back to Japan, lived in the U.S.A., they would have been powerful allies, far from the immediate reach of the organization.
*He failed to inform Haibara about the [[Akai]]'s past, and his involvement with her sister - the fact that Akai and [[Rye]] are the same person. The same applies for the [[Subaru Okiya]] disguise.
*He failed to reveal his secret identity to many proven allies, except [[List_of_characters_who_know_Conan's_identity|a small group of people]]. The same applies to Haibara's [[List_of_characters_who_know_Ai_Haibara's_identity|identity]] and past.
*He failed to inform most allies of his premeditated plans in many occasions (e.g., Haibara during the [[Head-to-Head_Match_with_the_Black_Organization:_A_Dual_Mystery_on_a_Full_Moon_Night|full moon case]]), sometimes putting the very life of his allies in danger.
*He failed to inform most allies (e.g., [[Haibara]]) of [[Amuro]]'s true identity and allegiance. To some extent, the same applies for [[Kir]]'s.
*He failed to fill in [[Masumi]] and [[Mary]] with numerous details about the Black Organization and [[Shuichi Akai]] faked death, once their allegiance became clear.
*He failed to inform the F.B.I. about most of his plans with Shuichi Akai. While a certain level of reticence was on purpose to trick the Black Organization about [[Akai's fake death technique]], the sheer amout of withold information contributes to slowdown the collaboration, especially after the [[The_Scarlet_Return|scarlet showdown]] events.

===Ran Mouri===
*[[Ran]] did not share with [[Shinichi]] that she witnessed a long-haired [[Akai]] in New York. As she knew that a long-haired assassin was roaming around, at least mentioning it would seem a sensible option.
*She also did not share with anyone that she saw through [[Vermouth]]'s disguise as [[Azusa]] in the Asaca case. As the [[Head-to-Head_Match_with_the_Black_Organization:_A_Dual_Mystery_on_a_Full_Moon_Night|full moon case]] has been publicly regarded as a kidnapping, and is obviously still unsolved, Ran is witholding potential useful information from the law enforcement.

===Ai Haibara===
*[[Haibara]] is hiding from [[Conan]] many aspects of her past that would help him in his fight against the organization:
:*She has not mentioned her parents' work on the [[Silver Bullet]], or the tapes her mother left her.
:*She has not fully explained the extent to which the [[APTX 4869]] drug she worked on, is related to [[Silver Bullet]], or whether they are codenames for the same project.
:*She has not openly shared all her knowledge about the [[Black Organization]] (e.g., its members).
:*She has been evasive and not fully clear about the [[Black Organization]] ultimate goal.
:*She has been keeping Conan mostly in the dark about her research of an antidote to [[APTX 4869]].
*Additionally, she has not revealed her true identity and past to most of the allied character. However, that might reflect the fact that Conan has been evasive with her about the identity and allegiance of numerous proval allies (e.g., Akai/Okiya, Amuro, etc.).

===Yukiko Kudo===
*[[Yukiko]] has not informed Conan about her presence in London during the Wimbledon case. That seemed rather pointless.
*She has not informed Conan about the full extent of her past interactions with [[Sharon Vineyard]] (e.g., the disguise course by [[Toichi Kuroba]] both of them attended). Not only that prevents Conan from digging deeper into Vermouth's past, but also might have delayed him in his quest to discover Vermouth's identity, as she was already known to be [[Chris Vineyard]] soon after the [[Reunion with the Black Organization]] events.

===Yusaku Kudo===
*[[Yusaku]] has never fully explained to Conan the true extent of his ability to help him. Yusaku is assumed to know influential and powerful people (he told Conan about that hoping to lure him out of Japan one time). However, his role in the fight against the Black Organization has been mostly marginal, as of Chapter 1054.
*He appears not to have revealed to [[Rei Furuya]] yet that he was the one staging for [[Okiya]] in the [[The_Scarlet_Return|scarlet showdown]] events.

===Shuichi Akai===
*[[Shuichi Akai]] has failed to properly inform at least Conan about his family members, and their involvement with the Black Organization. While it is possible that he is waiting for Conan to reveal his share of secrets first, such behavior is ultimately deleterious for their common cause.
*He has failed to communicate to Conan his suspects on [[Bourbon]]'s true identity and allegiance, and anything related to [[Scotch]].
*He has also withold all of the above, and many of his plans from his F.B.I. colleagues, including his boss James Black.

===Jodie Starling===
*[[Jodie Starling]] failed to communicate to [[Conan]] that she witnessed and survived [[Vermouth]]'s assassination of her father when she was a kid. It is unclear whether anyone other than [[James Black]] knows about it.

===[[James Black]]===
*As the head of the F.B.I. squad, he failed to seek a deeper collaboration with the C.I.A., especially after the [[Clash of Red and Black]] events, given [[Kir]]'s true allegance and secret double mission for both agencies.

===[[Hidemi Hondou]]===
*Other than a few laconic intelligence about [[Bourbon]] and [[RUM]], she has never fully revealed to Conan and the F.B.I. the true extent of her knowledge about the Black Organization.

*She has also played the same game with her mother's identity and allegiance.

*[[Mary]] is witholding many details of her past from [[Conan]], even though she made [[Masumi]] act in such a way that he would remember the [[The Wizard of the Ripples|ripples]] case, and the Akai family with it.
*She has not mentioned her husband [[Tsutomu Akai]]'s role to anyone outside her children.

===[[Tooru Amuro]]===
*As [[Bourbon]]:
:*He did not communicate to his fellow members about Vermouth's relation to the Boss.
*As [[Rei Furuya]]:
:*He has not shared with [[Conan]], the [[F.B.I.]], or the [[C.I.A.]] the full extent of his knowledge of the Black Organization.
:*He has not shared with any ally his past relation with [[Elena Miyano]].

===Gin===
*Gin has never divulged to at least [[Vodka]] the details of his past relation with [[Sherry]]. Had he done that, the hunt for Sherry would have been probably aided.

===Vermouth===
*[[Vermouth]] has withold from her fellow members of the Black Organization a large amount of damning information about Conan, Haibara, their friends and family, and their plots. While some reticence descends from her wish not to harm Conan and Ran, she could have shared certain details about Conan's plans which would have, at least, thwarted them.
*She has not promptly shared with most of her fellow members of the Black Organization any detail about [[Bourbon]]'s boss-approved mission of determining whether Shuichi Akai was really dead. Such omission almost caused [[Bourbon]] and [[Kir]] to be shot down by [[Chianti]] and [[Korn]].

===The Boss===
*For a long time, [[Bourbon]] wasn't allowed access to the recording of Akai's death even though the boss had approved of a mission where he was to investigate whether Akai was truly dead.

==Consequences==
As of file 1054, none of the characters has been shown repentant of not sharing information with other allies. An important corollary is that one cannot be sure whether character X knows information Y, unless the contrary is explicitly proven or implied.
