Great Detective Conan}} is a Japanese detective manga series written and illustrated by Gosho Aoyama. It has been serialized in the Japanese manga anthology Weekly Shōnen Sunday since 1994 and had been collected in 98 Tankōbon volumes by April 15, 2020.

The manga has been adapted into an anime series by the animation studio Tokyo Movie Shinsha, directed by Kenji Kodama (episode 1 to 252), Yasuichiro Yamamoto (episode 110 to 332, 667 to 677, 681 to the last episode to date), Masato Sato (episode 318 to 504), Koujin Ochi (505 to 666, and 678 to 680), and is broadcast in Japan on Nippon Television, Yomiuri TV and Animax. The series debuted on January 8th, 1996 and will have broadcast 897 episodes by March 24, 2018. The series has seen high levels of popularity in both manga and anime formats in Japan since its reception, and has also been adapted into nineteen Golden Week movies, with the first released on April 17th, 1997 and since then followed with a movie released each year, always in the month of April. Ten of the movies held a top 10 box office position in the year they were screened. == Story summary ==

The story follows the adventures of Shinichi Kudo (also known as Jimmy Kudo in Case Closed), a young detective prodigy who was inadvertently shrunk into a child's body due to a poison he was force-fed by members of a criminal syndicate. Neighbor and family friend Professor Agasa strongly suggested Shinichi hide his identity to prevent them from killing him and the people he cares about, so Shinichi takes the name Conan Edogawa. He goes to live with his childhood friend Ran Mouri and her father, Kogoro, and tries to use Kogoro's detective agency as a way to find the people who shrank him—without letting Ran figure out who he really is.
Internal rules
The world of Detective Conan has a set of internal rules that might catch unfamiliar readers of the manga and spectators of the anime off guard, such as the lack of information sharing and the regular illogical and irrational behavior exhibited by many characters. The universe is mostly consistent within its rules, with a few exceptions. The passing of time is difficult to judge, due to a literary device known as floating timeline, which enables the compression of 20+ years worth of events and technological upgrades into less than one year.
Detective Conan is known as "Case Closed" in North America. The name "Case Closed" results from concerns of copyright conflict of the name Detective Conan.

Viz Media licensed the manga series under the name for English-language publication in North America, which is up to Volume 73 as of January 20, 2020.
Funimation Entertainment licensed the anime series for North American broadcast under the name Case Closed.
S. California's UTB, United Television Broadcasting's free digital television station began to re-broadcast already dubbed Case Closed episodes on August 21st, 2011. The next two-episode block was scheduled for Saturday, August 27th, followed by two more episodes on Sunday, August 28th. The episodes were broadcasted at 6:30 a.m and repeated at 10:30 a.m the same day. A one-episode block also aired at 10:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays as well.

Incidentally, the catchphrase for Masumi Sera is 'Case Closed' (whether it's intended as a reference or coincidental is unspecified).

As of 2013, only one Case Closed branded video game was released, which was Case Closed: The Mirapolis Investigation, which was a Nintendo Wii exclusive title and released only in Japan and Europe. It features the English voice cast from the Anime for the English version, and has minor changes in script. It is so far the only English DC Game.

As of April 2013, Funimation has renewed the Case Closed license "For Future Use". Additionally on April 2nd 2013, Funimation announced Starting April 16th 2013 seasons 1-5 would be made available digitally through many online vendors, starting with iTunes, Playstation Network and Xbox Live. Season 1 will be available April 16th, season 2 and 3 in May, and Season 4 and 5 in June. Movie release dates have not been announced, however a hint shown in the description hints at a possible new season. Each episode will be 99 cents a piece.
As of October 2014 at NY Comic Con's Crunchy Roll panel, they announced that "Case Closed" would be added to their roster. Later they began subtitling the Japanese episodes at episode 754. The page for the series uses the Case Closed banner from Funimation. Originally the episodes were posted on Saturdays, a week after they air in Japan, but now they will begin to be posted on Wednesdays. As of March 21, 2016 they have subtitled up to episode 812, they do not subtitle specials or movies.

As of January 2016, English language Netflix began to stream episodes under the title "Case Closed". The page for the series uses the Case Closed banner from Funimation. They obtained the rights to air fifty-two episodes in Japanese with subtitles, from episode 748-799. The show's maturity rating is listed as TV-14.

Critical reception
The series has been well received in Japan, with the anime adaptation ranking in the top twenty in Animage's polls between 1996 until 2000, where it dropped below the top twenty. In the Japanese TV anime ranking, Detective Conan often ranked the top six. It has even been used as a mascot to promote citizens to follow the law. The English adaptation has not been as equally popular as in Japan, and has been criticized for the character name changes.

The manga is a huge success and it is continued to be published. It won the prestigious Shogakukan Manga Award for the shōnen category in 2000. Some of its volumes appear on the lists of best-selling manga.

The series is successful in Asia and Europe, where some countries translated most of the episodes and volumes. Due to the high popularity DC is re-broadcasting in many countries after the original premieres.

Although popular in many other countries, Case Closed was not as successful in the US, most likely due to poor advertising, name changes, and script changes around Japanese people and culture.

Due to this, FUNimation's dubbed version of "Case Closed" was cancelled at only 130 episodes.

Although, many fans wanted the anime version of Detective Conan to be successful in North America, excluding the renamed character names, it did not do well and still failed and got several negative reviews, and therefore in 2018, FUNimation Entertainment lost the rights to "Case Closed", along with "KenIchi: The Mightiest Disciple".

However, the manga is still released by VIZ Media.

Demographic
Even though Detective Conan is a Shōnen, its audience is composed of a substantial proportion of female viewers and readers. The series also seems to attract all ages.

Appearances in other media
Within the Detective Conan universe, one of the most notable recurring tropes is the illogical, irrational, or outright contradictory behavior of a considerable number of characters. Sometimes, the easy explanation for such seemingly dangerous pattern is that Gosho Aoyama is artificially prolonging a story arc, by preventing a quick breakthrough. In that case, a plot device usually referred to as plot armor prevents anything too nasty from happening to those characters who appear to behave irrationally. Alternatively, the irrational behavior is intrinsically required by the universe itself for certain cardinal elements of Detective Conan to be possible in the first place (e.g., the Sleeping Kogoro act).
Lack of Information Sharing

Japanese law enforcement
The police is known for not taking any issue with children, teenagers, and other anauthorized individuals being present at, and messing with crime scenes. Conan, Haibara, the Detective Boys, Ran, and Sonoko are usually reminded not to interfere with any ongoing investigation, but no real effort is made by any officer to remove them from the scene, and to prevent them from re-entering it. Other than Kogoro occasionally punching Conan for being bothersome and insistent, being at a crime scene when not supposed to, does not have signficant consequences. While the presence of adult detectives such as Kogoro, and teenage detectives such as Shinichi, Hattori, and Masumi can in principle be tolerated, any contamination of the crime scene could both hinder the investigation, and render the collected evidence inadmissible. As such, the police is not doing a good job at restricting crime scenes, and enforcing those restrictions.

Sleeping Kogoro
The way bystanders react to the sleeping Kogoro act does not make much sense. The conditions for the ruse to be discovered by other characters appear to be arbitrary. Everyone should be able to see that Korogo is sleeping and not talking. Therefore, the level of intelligence required to discover the truth is unclear. Additionally, it is hard to belive that any adult would just stay there and listen to a speech simingly coming out of nowhere, without, at least, acting to check Kogoro's condition.

F.B.I.
The F.B.I. team lead by James Black has been behaving sub-optimally for most of its mission:
*No collaboration with the Japanese law enforcement has ever been seeked, despite no real obstacle exists, and the mission would benefit from it.
*No explicit collaboration with the C.I.A. has ever took place, despite the shared common knowledge of Hidemi Hondou's allegiance.
*Team members have been keeping secrets from each other which not only has hindered the quest against the Black Organization, but have also put many colleagues' lives in danger.

Within the Detective Conan universe, one of the most notable recurring tropes is the lack of information sharing that could potentially help the cause of individuals or groups. While this is mostly evident between the protagonists, antagonists are not immune from it. Almost everyone among the main characters, as of file 1054, is hiding (or has done so in the past) certain pieces of information from other characters whose allegiance is beyond suspect. The whole phaenomenon constitutes a single but significant portion of a number of illogical and irrational behaviors by many characters.
<!-- remember to create the Illogical and Irrational Behavior page -->

Instances
Conan Edogawa
Conan has withold numerous useful pieces of information regarding the Black Organization and the past of certain individuals from a multitude of proven allies. In particular, what was withold from whom seems arbitrary, and only serves the purpose to lengthen the overall story. Any optimal plan to tackle the Black Organization would begin by staging an explain-everything-to-everyone meeting with Ai Haibara, Yukiko Kudo, Yusaku Kudo, Heiji Hattori, Shuichi Akai, Jodie Starling, James Black, Andre Camel, Mary Sera, Masumi Sera, Hiroshi Agasa, Rei Furuya, Yuya Kazami, and, potentially, Koumei and Shukichi Haneda. Conan is the only character who knows the importance of each of them, and some of their links to the Black Organization. As such, it would make sense for him to reveal to each of them every single piece of information he knows, and vice versa. Yet, he failed to do so. Among the most important non-shared facts:
*He failed to report to any Japanese police force the existence of both the Black Organization, and APTX 4869. Not doing so at the very beginning did not make much sense, despite Agasa's comment in file 2. It was not until the end of the Vermouth arc that he collaborated with a police force (the F.B.I.), and not until the end of the Bourbon arc that he collaborated with a Japanese force (the NPA SB) against the Black Organization.
*He failed to update his own parents with most of the ongoing discoveries about the Black Organization. As, prior to moving back to Japan, they lived in the U.S.A., they would have been powerful allies, far from the immediate reach of the organization.
*He failed to inform Haibara about Akai's past, and his involvement with her sister - the fact that Akai and Rye are the same person. The same can be stated about the Subaru Okiya disguise.
*He failed to reveal his secret identity to many proven allies, except for a small group of people. The same applies to Haibara's identity and past.
*He failed to inform most allies of his premeditated plans in many occasions (e.g., Haibara during the full moon case), sometimes putting the very life of his allies in danger.
*He failed to inform most allies (e.g., Haibara) of Amuro's true identity and allegiance. To some extent, the same applies to Kir's.
*He failed to fill in Masumi and Mary with numerous details about the Black Organization and Shuichi Akai faked death, once their allegiance became clear.
*He failed to inform the F.B.I. about most of his plans with Shuichi Akai. While a certain level of reticence was on purpose to trick the Black Organization about Akai's fake death technique, the sheer amout of withold information contributes to slowdown the collaboration, especially after the scarlet showdown events.

Ran Mouri
*Ran did not share with Shinichi that she witnessed a long-haired Akai in New York. As she knew that a long-haired assassin was roaming around, at least mentioning it would have been a sensible option at the time.
*She also did not share with anyone that she saw through Vermouth's disguise as Azusa in the Asaca case. As the full moon case has been publicly regarded as a kidnapping, and is obviously still unsolved, Ran is witholding potential useful information from the law enforcement.

Ai Haibara
*Haibara is hiding from Conan many aspects of her past that would help him in his fight against the organization:
:*She has not explained the full extent of her parents' work on the Silver Bullet, nor she has shared the content of the tapes her mother left her.
:*She has not fully explained the extent to which the APTX 4869 drug she worked on, is related to Silver Bullet, or whether they are codenames for the same project.
:*She has not openly shared all her knowledge about the Black Organization (e.g., its members).
:*She has been evasive and not fully clear about the Black Organization ultimate goal.
:*She has been keeping Conan mostly in the dark about her research of an antidote to APTX 4869. Sometimes, she provides him with prototypes, though.
*Additionally, she has not revealed her true identity and past to most of the allied character. However, that might reflect the fact that Conan has been evasive with her about the identity and allegiance of numerous proven allies (e.g., Akai/Okiya, Amuro, etc.).

Yukiko Kudo
*Yukiko has not informed Conan about her presence in London during the Wimbledon case. That seemed rather pointless.
*She has not informed Conan about the full extent of her past interactions with Sharon Vineyard (e.g., the disguise course by Toichi Kuroba both of them attended). Not only that prevents Conan from digging deeper into Vermouth's past, but also might have delayed him in his quest to discover Vermouth's identity, as she was already known to be Chris Vineyard soon after the Reunion with the Black Organization events.

Yusaku Kudo
*Yusaku has never fully explained to Conan the true extent of his ability to help him. Yusaku is assumed to know influential and powerful people (he told Conan about that hoping to lure him out of Japan one time). However, his role in the fight against the Black Organization has been mostly marginal, as of Chapter 1054.
*He appears not to have revealed yet to Rei Furuya that he was the one staging for Okiya during the scarlet showdown events.

Shuichi Akai
*Shuichi Akai has failed to properly inform at least Conan about his family members, and their involvement with the Black Organization. While it is possible that he is waiting for Conan to reveal his share of secrets first, such behavior is ultimately deleterious for their common cause.
*He has failed to communicate to Conan his suspects on Bourbon's true identity and allegiance, and anything related to Scotch.
*He has also withold all of the above, and many of his plans from his F.B.I. colleagues, including his boss James Black.

Jodie Starling
*Jodie Starling failed to communicate to Conan that she witnessed and survived Vermouth's assassination of her father when she was a kid. It is unclear whether anyone other than James Black knows about it.

James Black
*As the head of the F.B.I. squad, he failed to seek a deeper collaboration with the C.I.A., especially after the Clash of Red and Black events, given Kir's true allegance and secret double mission for both agencies.

Hidemi Hondou
*Other than a few laconic intelligence about Bourbon and Rum, she has never fully revealed to Conan and the F.B.I. the true extent of her knowledge about the Black Organization.

Masumi Sera
*Masumi has not come clean to Conan with regard to her true identity, while throwing at him vague hints over time.
*She has also played the same game with her mother's identity and allegiance.

Mary Sera
*Mary is witholding many details of her past from Conan, even though she made Masumi act in such a way that he would remember the ripples case, and the Akai family with it.
*She has not mentioned her husband Tsutomu Akai's role to anyone outside her children.

Tooru Amuro
*As Bourbon:
:*He did not communicate to his fellow members about Vermouth's relation to the Boss.
*As Rei Furuya:
:*He has not shared with Conan, the F.B.I., or the C.I.A. the full extent of his knowledge of the Black Organization.
:*He has not shared with any ally his past relation with Elena Miyano.
:*He has not shared with any ally (except Shuichi Akai, to a degree) any information about his former colleague Scotch.

Gin
*Gin has never divulged to at least Vodka the details of his past relation with Sherry. Had he done that, the hunt for Sherry would have been probably aided.

Vermouth
*Vermouth has withold from her fellow members of the Black Organization a large amount of damning information about Conan, Haibara, their friends and family, and their plots. While some reticence descends from her wish not to harm Conan and Ran, she could have shared certain details about Conan's plans which would have, at least, thwarted them.
*She has not promptly shared with most of her fellow members of the Black Organization any detail about Bourbon's boss-approved mission of determining whether Shuichi Akai was really dead. Such omission almost caused Bourbon and Kir to be shot down by Chianti and Korn.

The Boss
*For a long time, Bourbon wasn't allowed access to the recording of Akai's death even though the boss had approved of a mission where he was to investigate whether Akai was truly dead.

Consequences
As of file 1054, none of the characters has been shown repentant of not sharing information with other allies. An important corollary is that one cannot be sure whether character X knows information Y, unless the contrary is explicitly proven or implied.

:*She has not mentioned her parents' work on the Silver Bullet, or the tapes her mother left her.
Sometimes, she provides him with prototypes though.

Masumi Sera
*Masumi has not come clean to Conan with regard to her true identity, while throwing at him vague hint over time.

To some extent, the same applies for Kir's.

As she knew that a long-haired assassin was roaming around, at least mentioning it would seem a sensible option.

:*She has not mentioned her parents' work on the Silver Bullet, or the tapes her mother left her.
Sometimes, she provides him with prototypes though.

The same applies for the Subaru Okiya disguise.
*He failed to reveal his secret identity to many proven allies, except a small group of people.
To some extent, the same applies for Kir's.

As she knew that a long-haired assassin was roaming around, at least mentioning it would seem a sensible option.

:*She has not mentioned her parents' work on the Silver Bullet, or the tapes her mother left her.
*Additionally, she has not revealed her true identity and past to most of the allied character. However, that might reflect the fact that Conan has been evasive with her about the identity and allegiance of numerous proval allies (e.g., Akai/Okiya, Amuro, etc.).

*He appears not to have revealed to Rei Furuya yet that he was the one staging for Okiya in the scarlet showdown events.

Masumi Sera
*Masumi has not come clean to Conan with regard to her true identity, while throwing at him vague hint over time.

It was not until the end of the Vermouth arc that he collaborated with a police force (the F.B.I.), and not until the end of the Bourbon arc that he collaborated with a Japanese force (the PSB) against the Black Organization.
*He failed to update his own parents with most of the ongoing discoveries about the Black Organization. As, prior to moving back to Japan, they lived in the U.S.A., they would have been powerful allies, far from the immediate reach of the organization.
*He failed to inform Haibara about the Akai's past, and his involvement with her sister - the fact that Akai and Rye are the same person. The same applies for the Subaru Okiya disguise.
*He failed to reveal his secret identity to many proven allies, except a small group of people.
To some extent, the same applies for Kir's.

As she knew that a long-haired assassin was roaming around, at least mentioning it would seem a sensible option.

:*She has not mentioned her parents' work on the Silver Bullet, or the tapes her mother left her.
*Additionally, she has not revealed her true identity and past to most of the allied character. However, that might reflect the fact that Conan has been evasive with her about the identity and allegiance of numerous proval allies (e.g., Akai/Okiya, Amuro, etc.).

*He appears not to have revealed to Rei Furuya yet that he was the one staging for Okiya in the scarlet showdown events.

Masumi Sera
*Masumi has not come clean to Conan with regard to her true identity, while throwing at him vague hint over time.

All authors, including Gosho, have certain styles and tropes they recycle in their writing. This page is meant to be useful to readers who are still catching up in Detective Conan, so examples which contain specific major arc spoilers should be put in a spoiler box.

Mystery Related Tropes
Foreknowledge of Gosho's preferred tropes and method of building mysteries gives a reader a significant advantage is solving them.

General
Lack of recurring character death
No recurring character --one who has appeared in person alive for more than one case-- has been killed as of chapter 1054. Any recurring characters who have died did so in their first case and reappeared in flashbacks, were stated to be dead from the outset, or faked their death.

Lack of information sharing
Lack of Information Sharing

Illogical and irrational behavior
Illogical and Irrational Behavior

Plot progresses by coincidental encounters instead of chasing leads
Gosho often progresses through plots with a series of coincidental encounters: situations where Conan happens to be in the right place and time to find a case or something else plot relevant. Conan doesn't spend a lot of time investigating various leads and finding dead ends until one of them pans out. Plot relevant people are also likely to coincidentally appear by chance in cases.

Important characters for serious plots tend to be attractive/cool and younger, not quirky/plain or middle-aged
Important plot characters used for serious storylines tend to be cool or attractive and have more individualized, detailed, and careful designs than the usual suspects which often are plain, quickly drawn, or have appearance quirks such as oddly shaped heads, pronounced teeth, enlarged noses or lips, etc. Characters become less detailed the less often they reoccur, or were originally anticipated to reoccur. Gosho has acknowledged this general principle in at least one interview question.

Q：先生が漫画を描く上で大事なさっていることは？<br>
When sensei draws manga, what do you value?<br>
A：男の子はかっこよく、女の子は可愛くですね。最近は蘭や世良などの女の子もかっこよくなってきちゃいましたけどね（笑）。<br>
To draw cool boys and cute girls. Though Ran and Sera and such girls are becoming cooler these days (laughs).<br>

Most plot important characters, even adults, tend to be young, 30s or lower. Most of the main recurring police have not left their twenties. There are many exceptions as this general trend.

An appearance comparison of people who are relevant and irrelevant
The top row are recurring characters with some relevance to the plot, the bottom row are minor characters who have not reoccurred at all or reoccurred a few times in trivial contexts.

Regular Mystery
Most regular cases (with the first cases being much more variable) are 3-6 chapters long, with the last chapter dedicated to the solution. There are usually 3 primary suspects per case.

The culprit is most often one of three suspects
Typical cases present three primary suspects for consideration. The extreme majority of the time (>95%), the culprit is one of these individuals and not one of the witnesses, investigatory police, bystanders, etc. In cases where the culprit is not one of the three suspects, one of the suspects is typically associated with the crime, as an accomplice for instance.

Most cases are murder cases
About three out every four cases involve a murder. The remainder include kidnappings, robbery, heists, hostage taking, codes, and more benign misunderstandings. Of the major groups that Conan associates with, the Detective boys are the most likely to encounter cases that are not murder (although murder cases are very common for the Detective Boys).

Cases where an apparent murder turns out to be a suicide are relatively rare in Detective Conan (<5%). Accidental death is also fairly rare. However, it is not unusual for a culprit to be motivated by a misunderstanding of a past death, thinking a suicide was a murder for instance.

Murder motives are usually personal
The vast majority of murder motives are usually personal (e.g. a grudge) or to silence a witness. That said, there have been isolated incidences of accidents, would-be-spree murderers, and attempted professional assassination.

Culprits were most often male, but current cases are near even
Mixed gender suspect pools are common, but in both manga and AO cases, the culprits are male ~75% of the time and female ~25% of the time. However, the ratio has shifted considerably over time. A tally of culprits between Volumes 80-90 reveals that the culprit gender ratio is ~3♂:2♀, and is even closer to parity if one-suspect whodunits and story cases with no suspects are removed from consideration.

Innocent recurring characters stay innocent in later cases
Recurring characters may be involved or suspected in cases beyond their introductory ones, but no recurring character found to be innocent in their first case has been the culprit of a serious crime in a later case. The only major exceptions to this rule have been arc suspects who were Black Organization members. This rule doesn't apply when someone is in disguise as a recurring character and commits a crime (e.g. a Kogoro Mouri impersonator).

Most case culprits vanish from the story when they are caught
Virtually all culprits, after being arrested by law enforcement, disappear from the story. Occasionally the sentencing or futures of the more sympathetic culprits are described at the end of the case. Most exceptions to this rule, where the actual culprit reappears or is discussed in a later case, are connected to plot relevant events or major organizations.

Case tricks are often based on gimmicks from science demonstrations and the like (Bourbon arc +)
Starting in the Bourbon arc, case tricks are increasingly often based on gimmicks which have been filmed for science or physics demonstrations, or are parts of sleights of hand used for magic tricks, etc. The crime setup and the suspects are designed to make use of the gimmick. Knowing these factoids or searching for videos of gimmicks based on the circumstances for the crime scene is often useful.

Kaitou Kid Heist
So far Kaitou Kid has not repeated a main disguise in the Detective Conan manga where a significant portion of the case was dedicated to guessing who he was disguised as. Incidental disguises may be repeated. His disguises so far are kept up to date at List of Kaitou Kid disguises.

The major ones where he used a recurring character are:
<spoiler>
*Ran: Conan vs. Kaitou Kid
*Kogoro: The Gathering of the Detectives! Shinichi Kudo vs. Kaitou Kid
*Jirokichi: Kaitou Kid's Miraculous Midair Walk
*Takagi: Kaitou Kid and the Four Masterpieces
*Nakamori: The Kirin's Horn That Vanished into the Dark
*Genta: The Kirin's Horn That Vanished into the Dark
*Masumi: Kaitou Kid and the Blush Mermaid
*Sonoko: Kaitou Kid VS Makoto Kyogoku
*Agasa: Kaitou Kid and the Luna Memoria

Kaitou Kid has also disguised as the following characters, but not for a heist:
* Shiho Miyano: The Jet-Black Mystery Train
</spoiler>

In movies, these rules don't apply: more than once Kaitou Kid has disguised as Shinichi Kudo and blatantly appeared in front of Conan and the police, although Conan could not claim to be Shinichi himself.

Arc Mystery
An arc mystery usually takes the form of identifying the true allegiances of various mysterious characters that appear over the course of 100-300 chapters. So far they have all started with the introduction of a codenamed Black Organization agent and ended with a clash related to that agent where various allegiances and backstories are revealed. The main arc mysteries so far are the Vermouth arc, the Kir arc, the Bourbon and Akai arc, and the Rum arc. There are several tropes that apply especially to this long mystery subtype.

Arc mysteries become easier towards their ends
In arc mysteries, clues are released so that the mystery becomes easier to solve towards the end of the arc. Clues towards the beginning are often better hidden and require more analysis to interpret correctly. More overt clues and bits of backstory that provide hints appear with increasing frequency nearer to the end of the arc.

Arc suspects include protagonists and antagonists
Arc mysteries usually involve at least one Black Organization member and several other characters who are suspicious but who oppose the Black Organization in some form.

Overly suspicious often equals red herring
Overly suspicious characters are often red herrings on the side of good, while seemingly innocuous characters are more likely to be the opponent. Suspicious protagonist characters prior to their allegiance reveal are often shown lurking and watching from the shadows, asking prying questions, and saying vague mysterious quotes that could be taken as threats. Innocuous antagonists are not shown lurking as often or asking as many questions. Towards the end of an arc, antagonists may begin to act slightly more suspiciously. This coincides with clues becoming easier to identify and interpret.
<spoiler>Jodie, Akai, James Black, Eisuke, Camel, Okiya and examples of characters whose suspicion was emphasized, but were on the side of good. Araide and Amuro both appeared to be mostly innocuous kind characters, later revealed to be the antagonists of their arc. </spoiler>

Lots of spies
Most of the arc mystery suspects who turn out to be protagonists are spies.
<spoiler>The Vermouth arc introduced the FBI, the Kir arc imported the CIA, and the Bourbon arc unveiled the Japanese secret police.</spoiler>

Furthermore in every arc, at least one spy in the Black Organization was revealed.
<spoiler>In the Vermouth arc it was Akai, in the Kir arc it was Kir and her father, and in the Bourbon arc it was Bourbon and Scotch.</spoiler>

Undercover antagonists often use kindly personas
In contrast to overly suspicious red-herring protagonists who are often presented as menacing, many undercover antagonists so far have appeared as friendly and agreeable characters with few overtly suspicious moments (at first).
<spoiler>Vermouth hid as Araide, the friendly and gentle school doctor. Pisco was relatively non-threatening compared to some of the other more boisterous case suspects. Kir starred in a case that emphasized her kindness and positive attitude towards children before being outed as a member of the Black Organization. Bourbon hid as the a goofy waiter turned amateur detective.</spoiler>

Enemies rarely uncover secret identities
Characters who appear to be approaching Conan's or Haibara's true identity are unlikely to be enemies in the end.
<spoiler>The one major exception, Vermouth, has ulterior motives that put her at odds with the rest of the Black Organization. Amuro is sort of an exception as well in that he found out that Sleeping Kogoro was a fraud created by Conan. He turned out not to be an enemy.</spoiler>

Haibara is a sentinel for Black Organization members
Haibara has stated outright that any Black Organization member that recognizes her as a child would surely make it first priority to find out where she lives and attack. So far that has been the case although a direct attack is sometimes delayed while the soon-to-be-attacker takes the time to maneuver into more advantageous circumstances because of inconveniences or conflicts of interest. Conan has also used similar reasoning to deduce that someone who interacted with Haibara probably isn't a Black Organization member.

<spoiler>The two canon enemy Black Organization members who recognized Shiho as a child, Vermouth and Pisco, both made prompt moves. Pisco captured her immediately, but was terminated before he could explain. Vermouth was driven by personal motives that required her to work behind the backs of the rest of the Organization. While she moved quickly, she could not safely remove Shiho from Agasa's house without first executing a plan to fool the FBI and Shinichi. When Shiho's whereabouts were discovered by Bourbon, the attack on the mystery train came promptly.
</spoiler>

This information strongly implies that any character who has closely interacted with Ai Haibara cannot be a Black Organization member who both recognizes Shiho as a child and is loyal and without ulterior motive. This rule of thumb has proven useful for ruling out arc mystery suspects who approach Haibara closely at some point. Consider the following examples:

The list of major arc suspects who did approach Ai Haibara closely or demonstrated significant awareness of Ai Haibara yet were not antagonists in the end include:
<spoiler>
* Jodie Starling: first of the four major Vermouth arc suspects.
* Shuichi Akai: second of the four major Vermouth arc suspects.
* James Black: third of the four major Vermouth arc suspects
* Subaru Okiya: first of the four major Bourbon arc suspects
* Masumi Sera: second of the four major Bourbon arc suspects
* Kansuke Yamato: A discredited Rum arc suspect and a single case "jump scare" antagonist.
</spoiler>

The list of major arc suspects who were innocent yet did not approach Ai Haibara closely or demonstrated significant awareness of Ai Haibara include:
<spoiler>
* Eisuke Hondou: Only active suspect of the Kir arc.
</spoiler>

The list of suspects who turned out to be members of the Black Organization (and were seemingly loyal for at least part of their character development) who did not approach Haibara directly and did not demonstrate significant awareness of her include:
<spoiler>
* Ki'ichiro Numabuchi: A two case antagonist who was a member of the Black Organization.
* Rena Mizunashi: Main person at issue for the Kir arc who is a member of the Black Organization.
* Scar Akai (Tooru Amuro version): third of the four major Bourbon arc suspects who was a disguise created by the Black Organization.
* Tooru Amuro: fourth of the four major Bourbon arc suspects who is a member of the Black Organization.
</spoiler>

The list of suspects who turned out to be members of the Black Organization (and were seemingly loyal for at least part of their character development) who did approach Ai Haibara closely or demonstrated significant awareness of Ai Haibara include:
<spoiler>
* Pisco: He attacked immediately.
* Vermouth: Because of the FBI and Conan whom she did not want to involve, her attack was delayed until she could achieve a better position as Araide. She did lurk around Haibara however.

Notice how both of these people started planning immediately and mounted an attack.
</spoiler>

Misleading dialogue
Gosho frequently manipulates the reader's sense of suspicion with dialogue that sounds mysterious and threatening, or is misleading without the appropriate context. The technique works well because dialogue is pliable; it is easier to create deceptive dialogue than it is to create deceptive action. Gosho also uses especially shocking or quotable lines towards the end of cases to distract from other more useful clues that might have appeared.

<spoiler>
Examples:
* Gin talking to Vodka about searching for someone that initially sounds like it fits the description of Shinichi, but actually refers to Shiho's escape.
* Jodie uses the expression "A secret makes a woman, woman" after Vermouth is shown saying it. She and James Black both use "Cool Guy" which Vermouth wrote on one of her pictures. Both usages make sense in proper context: Jodie uses Vermouth's line because she heard Vermouth say it when she killed her father. The FBI raided Vermouth's office and saw Conan's picture labelled cool guy.
* James asks if Akai brought him to Japan to "make (Akai's) lover come back to (Akai)" Akai affirms this and says that he wants "his lover (koibito) to regret they ever left me with tears of blood.". Akai's "lover" is a reference to the ironic codename he gave Gin: "koibito" meaning lover. He later makes Gin cry the foretold tears of blood when Akai's bullet grazes Gin's cheek in the events of "Black Impact". That quote also alludes to Akemi, Akai's actual lover whom Gin killed.
* Camel communicating with Akai and Conan during Clash of Red and Black was made to sound like he was a spy sent by the Black Organization to infiltrate the FBI.
* Okiya's dialogue with Conan: "I've known his face for a very long time... There's no way I could be mistaken." It sounded threatening, but in context referred to Bourbon impersonating Akai.
* Sera, while deleting Haibara's picture from her computer: "Deletion. For data at least ... is an easy task to accomplish". It sounds threatening, but Masumi has no ill intention towards Haibara at all.
* Gin and Mary's similar quotes about a demon in the darkness.</spoiler>

Quotes intended to mislead are relatively easy to identify.
* They often sound poetic.
* They are vague, forcing the reader to make assumptions about the speaker, the subject, or what they are referring to. The goal is to trick the reader into filling in the blanks using the immediate context instead of the true context.
:*Sometimes no one is specifically named in the quote, but someone is alluded to via terms like "that person".
:*When only one half of a two-sided conversation is shown there may be an attempt to trick the reader into assuming the other half is someone else.
::*Sometimes two halves of separate conversations are shown together to imply two characters are contacting each other when they are actually contacting third parties. Such trick conversations have several hallmarks. They almost always take place by voice (phone call) or writing (text). They are vague, and do not contain any of the usual personalization that would clearly indicate who the speaker was speaking to(such as using names). Parts of the conversation and replies are sometimes omitted. Conversation may sound more like a series of monologues than a dialogue.
* They often take the form of a monologue or character thought.
* They sound mysterious or threatening.
* They are restated or repeated by another character. When the two characters with similar lines are a known antagonist and a suspect with unknown allegiance, often the goal is trick the reader into thinking the two are allies or alike.

These sorts of trap quotes are perhaps best countered by simply ignoring them and focusing on other evidence. With a few exceptions, mysterious lines are rarely helpful in figuring out people's allegiances, especially since the actual context of the quote may not be revealed for some time. A character's actions always speak louder than their words.

Old arc characters' pasts are sometimes reused in new arc plots
Some arc characters are relevant for more than their introductory arc. The reason a character is reused has so far always related to something from their past, rather than becoming coincidentally involved in new affairs. Old characters likely to become re-involved have unresolved mysteries or have had connections with current arc characters.

Old characters introduced well before an arc starts aren't usually major suspects
To date, all the significant suspects in arc mysteries were introduced during their arc or just before. When Conan suspects an older character from an earlier arc, the suspicion is usually fleeting or disqualified immediately. Practically speaking, newer characters are the most suspicious.

Minor points of note
* Historically, the inner thoughts of still-unknown mystery characters, protagonists and antagonists alike, have been revealed to the reader at various points.

Romance Related Tropes
Childhood friends become adult romances
The characters who were childhood friends or acquaintances and then started dating as teens and adults include:
*Shinichi Kudo - Ran Mouri
*Heiji Hattori - Kazuha Toyama
*Kogoro Mouri - Eri Kisaki
*Kaito Kuroba - Aoko Nakamori
*Hiroshi Agasa - Fusae Campbell
*Ninzaburo Shiratori - Sumiko Kobayashi
*Kazunobu Chiba - Naeko Miike
*Kansuke Yamato - Yui Uehara

True breakups in the main cast are rare
*Current main cast breakups only include Shuichi Akai/Jodie Starling.

Breakups are fixed when the same couple gets back together
* Separations such as Kogoro Mouri/Eri Kisaki and Yumi Miyamoto/Shukichi Haneda are both in the process of being fixed because both people still find the other attractive.

</spoiler>

<spoiler>
*Ran: Conan vs. Kaitou Kid
*Kogoro: The Gathering of the Detectives! Shinichi Kudo vs. Kaitou Kid
*Jirokichi: Kaitou Kid's Miraculous Midair Walk
*Takagi: Kaitou Kid and the Four Masterpieces
*Nakamori: The Kirin's Horn That Vanished into the Dark
*Genta: The Kirin's Horn That Vanished into the Dark
*Masumi: Kaitou Kid and the Blush Mermaid
*Sonoko: Kaitou Kid VS Makoto Kyogoku
*Agasa: Kaitou Kid and the Luna Memoria

Kaitou Kid has also disguised as the following characters, but not for a heist:
* Shiho Miyano: The Jet-Black Mystery Train
</spoiler>

</spoiler>

<spoiler>
</spoiler>

The list of major arc suspects who were innocent yet did not approach Ai Haibara closely or demonstrated significant awareness of Ai Haibara include:
<spoiler>
* Eisuke Hondou: Only active suspect of the Kir arc.
</spoiler>

The list of suspects who turned out to be members of the Black Organization (and were seemingly loyal for at least part of their character development) who did not approach Haibara directly and did not demonstrate significant awareness of her include:
<spoiler>
</spoiler>

The list of suspects who turned out to be members of the Black Organization (and were seemingly loyal for at least part of their character development) who did approach Ai Haibara closely or demonstrated significant awareness of Ai Haibara include:
<spoiler>
* Pisco: He attacked immediately.
* Vermouth: Because of the FBI and Conan whom she did not want to involve, her attack was delayed until she could achieve a better position as Araide. She did lurk around Haibara however.

Notice how both of these people started planning immediately and mounted an attack.
</spoiler>

<spoiler>

* They often sound poetic.

It was not until the end of the Vermouth arc that he collaborated with a police force (the F.B.I.), and not until the end of the Bourbon arc that he collaborated with a Japanese force (the P.S.B.) against the Black Organization.
*He failed to update his own parents with most of the ongoing discoveries about the Black Organization. As they, prior to moving back to Japan, lived in the U.S.A., they would have been powerful allies, far from the immediate reach of the organization.
*He failed to inform Haibara about the Akai's past, and his involvement with her sister - the fact that Akai and Rye are the same person. The same applies for the Subaru Okiya disguise.
*He failed to reveal his secret identity to many proven allies, except a small group of people.
To some extent, the same applies for Kir's.

As she knew that a long-haired assassin was roaming around, at least mentioning it would seem a sensible option.

:*She has not mentioned her parents' work on the Silver Bullet, or the tapes her mother left her.
*Additionally, she has not revealed her true identity and past to most of the allied character. However, that might reflect the fact that Conan has been evasive with her about the identity and allegiance of numerous proval allies (e.g., Akai/Okiya, Amuro, etc.).

*He appears not to have revealed to Rei Furuya yet that he was the one staging for Okiya in the scarlet showdown events.

Masumi Sera
*Masumi has not come clean to Conan with regard to her true identity, while throwing at him vague hint over time.
