Even without saying it I know your heart I’ll be by your side
Even without saying it Always You’re my best friend
Part 1
A girl named Yuuki Haruna asks Kogoro to search for a man named Shuugo whom she texts with on her pager. She explains that Shuugo sent her a musical box to help pay for her tuition but she could not bring herself to sell something valuable and wants to return it. Conan notices the music box plays the song "Haru Yo Koi" (よ来い?, lit. "Come Dear Spring") and missed three notes "La, Do, La". After tracing the number on the pager, they visit the Ogata family who reveals that Shuugo was an elderly man who had recently died.
<spoiler>
The Ogata family reveals that Shuugo hid stamps worth a fortune somewhere in the house and they suspect Haruna is there to take it from them. They allow Kogoro, Ran, Conan, and Haruna to spend the night at their household. Conan concludes that one of the Ogata family members wants to scare Haruna away.

After tranquilizing Kogoro, Conan reveals that the shadow was created with the use of black paper tapped to a window. When a moving car light flashes through the window, it creates the shadow of a flying figure. As for the Koto, Conan explains that the Koto was suspended through a very long string which was released by the culprit; As evidence, Conan reveals that a hairpin was found at the door where the string was and the one who opened the door was Kazuko Ogata. Kazuko confesses and explains that she did not want Haruna to have the stamps since her family is currently in need of the money. Conan reveals that the missing music notes reveal the location of the stamps. Conan explains that the missing notes in Solfège are La, Do, La, but in Iroha its I-Ha-I which is referring to Spirit tablet (位牌, Ihai?). A few days after the case, Shirou Ogata reveals that he is in a relationship with Haruna and thanks Kogoro for solving the case.
Conan Edogawa is the alias used by Shinichi Kudo in his shrunken form. Indeed, he took the appearance of a 7 year old boy after being forced to swallow a poison, a prototype called APTX 4869, by two men in black later revealed to be members of the Black Organization. Besides his changed appearance, the poison did not inflict any other damage and therefore he still has the brain and mind of an adult. He's able to use his gifted powers of deduction to solve cases and eventually close in on the Black Organization in the hope of finding an antidote to the APTX 4869.

Conan is often treated as a separate character from Shinichi by fans, and often viewed as the main character of the series while Shinichi is viewed as a recurring character. He has become a popular figure in Japan and even appeared at numerous occasions in different anime series (i.e. mainly cameo appearances) as well as other medias.

Background
Conan Edogawa is Shinichi Kudo's alter ego. He did not exist prior to the chain of events, involving members of the Black Organization, that led Shinichi to transform back into a child.

The Transformation
At the beginning of the series, Shinichi brings his friend Ran to Tropical Land, a local theme park, to celebrate her victory in the Metropolitan Karate Championships. He later ends up solving a murder case there. As they are leaving, Shinichi witnesses a suspicious exchange between an unknown man and a man in black in a secluded area just outside the park. As he leaves her to investigate, Ran feels like she's seeing Shinichi for the last time (which will happen to have been somewhat of a premonition). While spying on the suspicious men, Shinichi does not notice another man in black, who knocks him out from behind and forces him to swallow a new experimental poison known as APTX 4869. They then leave him to die. However, instead of killing Shinichi, a rare side-effect occurred. It shrinks his body back to that of his six-year-old self. In desperation and confusion, Shinichi heads back to his house and runs into his next door neighbor and close family friend, Dr. Hiroshi Agasa. After a few attempts at proving he's in fact Shinichi, he finally succeeds in convincing the Professor. The latter warns him he must keep his identity secret as the Black Organization will kill him and others associated with him should they learn the truth.
clearleft

Taking a new identity
Shinichi comes up with the alias Conan Edogawa after Arthur Conan Doyle and Edogawa Rampo and pretends to be a distant relative of Agasa's who places Conan in Ran's care. Ran's father Kogoro Mouri, owns a Detective Agency which may allow him to run into a case involving the Black Organization.

Creation of the Detective Boys
He is enrolled at Teitan Elementary to further protect his identity and makes friends with Ayumi Yoshida, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, and Genta Kojima, who create the Detective Boys not long after.

Solving cases
As Conan, Shinichi helps Ran's father solve cases by putting him to sleep and simulating Kogoro's voice using the special bowtie gadget Dr. Agasa made for him. By solving cases one after the other, he helps build up Kogoro's reputation who will later on be referred to as "Sleeping Kogoro". He also spends a good amount of time with his Detective Boys fellows and solves many small cases with them and sometimes in the company of Dr. Agasa. In some situations, when there's only Ran, Sonoko and himself, he will target Sonoko instead to solve the case at hand. Because of that, Sonoko eventually becomes another rather well-known "sleeping" detective though it's within a much smaller circle (the investigation team and her friends). In recent files Conan has solved the case as himself then claimed afterwards that 'Shinichi-niichan told him it'.

Personality
As Conan, Shinichi tries to behave like a child. He refers to Ran as "Ran-neechan" (nee-chan meaning older sister, a common nickname Japanese children give to teenagers and young adults they look up to), and refers to Shinichi as "Shinichi-niichan" (nii-chan meaning older brother). He also refers to Kogoro as "Oji-san" or "Occhan" (both meaning Uncle), although he also does this as Shinichi. As Shinichi, he refers to Conan as usually "Conan-kun" or the "Kid in the Glasses". Shinichi treats Conan as a seperate person completely, thinking for example, "changing back into Conan".

Conan remains very close to Ran, who in return is very protective of him. However, because Ran is unaware of his true identity, Conan often finds himself in awkward situations with her, such as when she confessed her feeling for Shinichi to him and when she made him bathe with her at a hot spring. Also, when Conan sees parts of Ran he not supposed to see, he has nosebleeds.

He will often speak in a child-like tone of voice when dealing with adults, but he often gets caught up in the current case and begins speaking like an adult and talk about things most children would be ignorant to. When this happens, he often tries to pass it off as "something [he] heard on TV". Likewise, he makes no effort to hide his love for Sherlock Holmes and soccer, so if he talks about either subject in too much detail, he tries to escape suspicion by saying it was something Shinichi told him about. Although as the series has progressed the adults around him have become more used to his "being quite smart for a child", causing him to behave more like himself around them, he still tries to pass as a normal child. The only police officers with whom Conan can speak in a professional manner are the FBI, especially Jodie Starling, Shuichi Akai, James Black, and Inspector Kansuke Yamato of the Nagano Police, who all suspect that there is more to Conan than meets the eye.

Conan tends to act more like himself around the Detective Boys, even to the point that they find it odd when he acts like a child around adults. He will often play games like baseball with the Detective Boys, but he is too used to soccer to perform well. He will even try using soccer techniques such as kicking in games that do not call for it. Because he is unfamiliar with popular games and TV shows, Genta and the others tend to think of him as dumb. This annoys Conan so much that he will secretly watch TV in the living room after Kogoro and Ran go to sleep to get more "practice" in.

It can be noted that Conan shows flexibility as the anime progresses. This is also mentioned in a non-canonical mention in Movie 13, when Ai remarks "Only Edogawa-kun and monkeys can climb a tree like that", and several other scenes.
Appearance
Conan has Dark Brown hair which mostly hangs downwards just above his blue eyes, but there are also a few strands that stick up at the front and back of his head. Conan's usual outfit consists of a blue suit jacket with a single button and a pair of shorts, even though he has taken to wearing more casual clothing as time goes on. He also wears a red bowtie and his dad's old glasses. Both these items were later specifically modified by Dr. Agasa to include a voice changer, microphone and homing device, to aid in Conan in his cases. His red runners have also been modified to harness electric and magnetic fields to stimulate pressure points on Conan's foot, greatly enhancing his kicking power.

Appellations
Although most people will call Conan by his name suffixed with -kun, or simply kid, a lot of the characters have different ways of calling him due to the special relationships they share. The following is a list of the different appellations for Conan (and the ones Conan gives in return) encountered in the series.
Plot overview
Initial pursuit
After Shinichi becomes Conan, he sets out to find the men in black almost immediately. At the suggestion of Agasa, he moves in with Ran and Kogoro, hoping that cases related to them come by. Pretty soon, a case involving a woman name Akemi Miyano (using the alias Masami Hirota) appears. Akemi robs a bank for the men in black in the hopes that they will free her sister from their organization. Conan is unable to realize the case's connection to the organization until after the men in black have shot Akemi and left her for dead for trying to double cross them. In her dying moments, Akemi warns Conan of the danger of the organization.

Conan runs across the men in black again on a bullet train, this time learning their codenames: Gin and Vodka.

At a game convention, Conan meets a third man in black named Tequila, only to have him killed in an explosion meant for someone else.

Introduction of Ai Haibara
As the story progresses, Conan later befriends biochemist Ai Haibara. Ai Haibara grew up within the Black Organization and is a former member of it along with her sister.

She is the creator of the APTX 4869 drug but took the drug in order to escape from the Black Organization. Conan has run into the Black Organization multiple times, but he fails in tracking them due to Gin's cleverness.

Meeting with the Organization
After Vermouth
The Phone Number of 'That Person'
After solving a case in a rich household, the culprit tells the phone number for the Leader of the Black Organization is the tune to the song of "Seven Children"

Returning Back To Shinichi
The First Comeback
Throughout the series Conan has returned back to normal. First he temporary returns to normal after drinking alcohol while infected with a cold.
He quickly turns back into Conan after solving the case. The next time was after taking the prototype antidote for APTX 4869.

Antidote Prototype
After two days, the antidote wears off and he becomes Conan again. Much further into the series, Shinichi accidentally takes a prototype antidote for APTX 4896. The antidote wears off 24 hours later but he is given another one by Ai to keep his identity secret. After another four hours, he becomes Conan again. Even farther into the manga during the London arc, Conan takes the antidote so he can go overseas, as his alias "Conan Edogawa" doesn't have a passport. He takes a spare one to avoid suspicion from Ran, luckily he was able to get himself a 3rd one for the return trip.

Relationships analysis
Family & Friends
Ran Mouri
Shinichi Kudo and Ran Mouri
Conan and Ran share a brother/sister kind of relationship. He calls her Ran-neechan. Although Conan has yet to reveal his real identity to Ran, they do have a tight bond. They do a lot of activities together such as swimming, going to the movies or festivals, and more. It is even likely that Ran unconsciously knows that Conan actually is Shinichi, even though she seems reluctant to follow that notion. Ran told Conan that if only he is Shinichi on Episode 308.
clearright

Kogoro Mouri
Kogoro often seems to find Conan to be a nuisance when around or on a case as Conan would often do or say unexpected things and act out of his own will just as much as a child would do (often done on purpose by Conan to look this way).
Although in most cases Conan merely sees Mouri as a drunk idiot, he often is impressed when Kogoro actually gets the case right, and will occasionally back off from the case when he sees that Kogoro is actually placing effort.
clearright

Yukuko and Yuusaku Kudo
Conan's parents, Yusaku and Yukiko, like to push their child towards becoming an even better detective. They enjoy giving out challenges and sometimes without letting Conan know who's giving them: they disguised once to simulate a case and force Conan to discover their identities by his own means.

Yukiko loves to meddle in Conan's (and Shinichi's) love life as she will often make allusions such as Ran being her possible future daughter-in-law or Ai and Ayumi having feelings for Conan. He doesn't usually pay much attention to them.

Conan's mother helped him out once to keep his secret identity from being exposed to Ran by creating an alibi for him.
clearright

Professor Agasa
Conan treats Agasa as a member of his own family, like an uncle. Due to the fact that they both share the secret behind Shinichi's transformation and knowledge about the Black Organization, Conan often comes to him when in trouble or seeking for help. He was the one who created most of Conan's gadgets, including his power shoes and tracking glasses.
clearright

Heiji Hattori
When they first meet, Conan and Heiji seem bound to become lifelong rivals. However, after discovering Conan's real identity, Heiji starts to act almost like an older brother towards him. Since then the two have become rather close friends, though Conan often seems to find Heiji more of an annoyance then anything, due to his dangerous habit of calling Conan 'Kudo' when others are present.
clearright

The Detective Boys
Ai Haibara
Conan Edogawa and Ai Haibara
Ai Haibara is the third girl that seems to have somewhat romantic feelings for Conan/Shinichi, although she never truly admits it; indeed, it is a mystery just exactly what she feels for him, whether friendship or otherwise. Some people, such as Conan's Mother and Gin, have stated that she has feelings for Conan. It could be said that, because of their almost equal level of intelligence as well as similarities in their pasts (i.e. both victims of the APTX 4869), she finds it easier to talk to him.
clearright

Ayumi Yoshida
Conan grows to respect the little girl in his class for her sharp wit and observational skills, along with the other members of the Detective Boys. Although Ayumi clearly seems to like Conan, the latter does not return her feelings.

Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya & Genta Kojima
Mitsuhiko sees Conan as a model, someone he looks up to. Genta, and more so Mitsuhiko, are often impressed by Conan's vast knowledge and incredible deduction skills.

They both become quite jealous of Conan whenever Ayumi shows gestures of affection towards him (usually a small kiss on the cheek). They would run after Conan shouting how "unfair" it is.

Law enforcement
Police
With the exception of a few inspectors, most listen to the little clues that Conan points out. After a while, Conan gets the attention of the whole Tokyo police department for noticing things even pros miss.
FBI
The FBI is one of the few minority that Conan acts normally around. Conan seems to place trust in the FBI, and occasionally help in their operations.
Jodie Starling
Jodie nicknamed Conan "Cool Kid" and Conan (despite being wary when he first met her) now places complete trust in Jodie. Jodie has also called Conan, informing of a new BO member, Bourbon.
Shuichi Akai
Akai has been shown to respect Conan's detective skills. It may not take long before Akai figures out Conan and Shinichi are one and the same. Conan once says to Akai, "I'm glad you're an ally."

The Black Organization
Gin and Vodka
Even though Gin and Vodka do not yet know who's stopping their operations, Gin has been shown to be curious who "that guy" is, "that guy" being Conan. Gin has tried to catch a glimpse of Conan's face in a helicopter in The Raven Chaser, but failed after Conan successfully downed the helicopter. Conan seems to have a very bitter hatred towards them, and this only increases as more people are targeted by the BO.
Vermouth
Vermouth seems to has great personal interest in Conan, constantly calling him as the Black Organization 'Silver Bullet'. She also often protects Conan probably because when she was disguising as a serial killer in New York, she was saved by Conan (Shinichi at the time) and Ran. Conan does not, however, seems to react strongly when she is mentioned. He also seems to consider her less of a threat, and may or may not know that Vermouth knows his identity.

Others
Kaitou Kid
Before being shrunk, Shinichi had encountered Kid once during the Clock Tower heist, though they did not meet face-to-face. In their next encounter, however, after Shinichi had become Conan, Kid disguised himself as Ran in order to steal the Suzuki Black Star pearl. When Conan cornered him on the Suzuki cruise ship, Kid suggested that he'd stolen all of Ran's clothes to impersonate her, and left her naked on the deck. While this ended up being a bluff, Conan was shocked and infuriated. In subsequent encounters between Kid and Conan, Conan displays a much more intense desire to capture Kid. In several instances he appears to be able to 'sense' Kid's presence; knowing Kid is close by often causes Conan to behave far more frenetically. However, in several instances, beginning with the "Big Adventure in the Eccentric Residence" case, when Kid does Conan/Shinichi a favor, such as saving Genta's life in the aforementioned case, Conan reciprocates by halting his investigation just shy of capturing Kid, thereby allowing him to escape unhindered.

In the movies, it is implied that Kid knows Conan's identity; he even helps Conan maintain his cover by disguising himself as Shinichi so that a suspicious Ran would stop suspecting Conan. However, this has not been confirmed by Gosho Aoyama, nor has it been implied in the manga.

People who know Conan's real identity
List of characters who know Conan's identity
There are only a few characters in the series who know Conan's real identity. None of them have ever betrayed Conan's identity to date. The main characters to know the secret are Hiroshi Agasa, Conan's parents, Heiji Hattori and Ai Haibara. Vermouth of the Black Organization also knows about Conan's secret. Later in the Episode 508 of the Anime, Eisuke Hondou confirms Conan's identity as Shinichi Kudo straight from him.

The 3rd, 8th and 14th movies also demonstrate that Kaito Kid apparently knows Conan's identity and acts to protect it. However, this has yet to be backed up by the original artist, Gosho Aoyama, in the manga or (as would follow) the anime main series.
Character popularity
*eBookJapan held a character popularity poll from April 12, 2011 to May 12, 2011 in which readers of Detective Conan (international included) could vote for their favorite character. Conan placed 3rd in the poll with 866 votes out of the 5,883 that were cast.

Name origin
*Gosho Aoyama (and Shinichi, in the story) got the name 'Conan Edogawa' from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the famous Sherlock Holmes stories, and Edogawa Ranpo, a Japanese mystery fiction writer.
**Fun fact: The author known as Edogawa Ranpo got this pen name from a transliteration of "Edgar Allan Poe." Pronouncing Poe's name in a Japanese accent sounds like 'Edogawa Ranpo.'

Trivia
*Oddly enough, , Conan has been shown (more prominently in the manga) to be both tone deaf and have perfect pitch, though we can assume he is merely terrible at music and singing in general. In Episode 11: The Moonlight Sonata Murder Case, he knows that the piano is in tune and deciphers a message at the end just by listening to the notes that are played. Also in the twelfth Detective Conan movie Full Score of Fear, Haibara directly described Shinichi Kudo as perfect-pitched at the last scenes.

*Conan's bad singing came to light as a joke after the anime began airing because Conan's voice actress Minami Takayama is a well-known singer. In Volume 15 of the manga, Takayama herself is kidnapped and Conan, who sounds similar to her, tries to take her place at a concert. However, Conan learns that despite having similar voices, they sound completely different when it comes to singing.

*The Japanese word 'konnan' (pronounced the same as 'Conan') means 'difficulty' or 'distress.'

*Conan has been noted to using the expression "Ah-le-le?", something that is usually said by Japanese gradeschoolers. The expression was even said by Kogoro in Episode 317 out of irritation to Conan.

* Conan/Shinichi and Ran share the same blood type.

Conan helps Kogoro solve his case without even having to knock him out, but after wards Ran escorts him to Shinichi's house for a confession of him being Shinichi. But Ran shows strong intuition about his personality and it makes Conan look wary for a no way out situation. When Shinichi's mom appears on the scene Conan/Shinichi worried for more thinking that Eri his mom might slip information about him, though she make more complex background for Conan to help Shinichi escape but Ran didn't give up so fast but ended in leaving Conan in his mom's care for days without knowing the truth. Upon entering the gate Eri started to treat Shinichi as a real baby and even carry him way into their house, but why has she left America for Japan?
<spoiler>
The killer was Mako Miyoshi, whose real name was Mako Kinoshita. She was the younger sister of Yashirou Kinoshita, a promising stage magician who died on-stage 14 years ago, when he tried an escape trick that went horribly wrong... but said death actually was a murder commited by his mentor Tsukumo, who was jealous and fearful due to the man's raw talent.

Mako, who back then was around Ayano's age, was behind the scenes and saw Tsukumo mess up with the supplies, but she was too young to properly testify; she became Tsukumo's apprentice as well and, once the training was complete and Tsukumo was discussing which of his apprentices was the most qualified to be his succesor, she revealed her identity and forced him to go along with her plans by threatening to kill Ayano. (Which she didn't do, though Mako admits she wanted to more than once).
The killer is Yoshifusa, who actually is only impersonating the real Yoshifusa Yabuuchi, who died in Brazil years ago and was a good friend of his. The fake Yoshifusa is named Dickson Tanaka, a man born in Brazil to Japanese parents and Carlos's bodyguard, since young Carlos is the real Yoshifusa's son with a Brazilian woman as well as one of the heirs. Dickson Tanaka made everyone believe Carlos was his bodyguard to protect him from the others (since they thought he was a bodyguard, they wouldn't attempt anything against Carlos), and he killed Machiko in self-defense when she attempted to stab him in the bath.
Shinichi Kudo is the protagonist of the manga and anime. Viz romanized his original name as Shin'ichi Kudo while Shogakukan's website romanizes it as Shinichi Kudoh.

Background
At the beginning of the series, Shinichi is a fairly famous high school detective who frequently helps the Tokyo police solve murder mysteries.

One day, Shinichi brings his friend Ran to a local theme park called Tropical Land, to celebrate her victory in the Metropolitan Karate Championships. He later ends up solving a murder case there. As they are leaving, Shinichi heads off alone to follow a suspicious man in black, Vodka, who was a suspect in the earlier murder. Shinichi witnesses a blackmail exchange between Vodka and a company president in a secluded area just outside the park, but is too engrossed to notice Gin, Vodka's partner, sneak up from behind. Gin knocks him out and forces him to swallow a new experimental poison known as APTX 4869, and they then leave him to die. However, instead of killing Shinichi, a rare side-effect occurs: his body shrinks into that of his six year-old self. After escaping from well-meaning but skeptical park security, with nowhere else to go Shinichi heads home. He there runs into his next door neighbor and close family friend, Dr. Hiroshi Agasa, who warns him that he must keep his identity secret because the Black Organization will kill him and others associated with him should they discover the truth.
In the meantime, to protect his identity he is forced to play the part of a first-grader, including enrolling as a student at Teitan Elementary. Three classmates befriend him and pull him into creating the Detective Boys, after which he tries to keep them out of trouble between using Kogoro as a mouthpiece to solve crimes and searching for how to get his old life back.

Personality
At the beginning of the series, Shinichi is a 16-year old and is convinced that driving a culprit to suicide is no better than murder itself. The few times he has been too late to save a life haunt him throughout the series.
Besides his intelligence, Shinichi is an extremely skilled soccer player, having been professionally scouted at school but choosing to stay at the amateur level. He initially played to hone his reflexes and often juggles a ball to clear his mind, but he is also an enthusiastic fan of the sport in its own right. Shinichi is also known for his inability to sing, but was revealed to have perfect pitch. He is also shown to play the violin in Movie 12, taking after his idol, Sherlock Holmes. He is well-educated in English, as he once conversed with and translated for an American diplomat, and later solved a case in London without evidence of any language barrier. Shinichi enjoys being in the spotlight, reveling in making local headlines and receiving fan-mail, and has a flair for the dramatic like his mother that can be seen every time he sets out a deduction in pieces building to a climax. Yet despite his popularity with the masses and his schoolmates, he has very few close friends — Ran, Agasa, Heiji, Ai, and to some extent the other Detective Boys (and if you're really reaching, Kaitou Kid).

Appearance and Skills
Shinichi has a striking resemblance to his father, Yusaku Kudo, sporting the same black hair, slightly paled skin, facial structures, and blue eyes. The only traits he doesn't share with his father is the mustache and round glasses. Besides his high school uniform, he also wears fine suits, with a tie, or regular clothing, which vary to his choice.

Shinichi skills as a detective are near the level of the greatest detective in history, Sherlock Holmes, which he's often nicknamed as the, "Modern Sherlock Holmes". He has a keen eye for details, and can spot any "strange points", in a case, that most people tend to ignore or not take into account. This comes from his photographic memory, of being able to remember every abstract of an investigation. Shinichi can also solve a complicated case, just by the littlest hints outside the crime scene, basically, he has the ability to "think out of the box". Shinichi also has knowledge over subjects that help him solve cases, that many people don't know of, this trait was probably because of his insistent reading as a child.

Besides intelligence, Shinichi also has amazing athletic ability, mostly from soccer, his favorite sport. In order to defend himself from criminals that would try and hurt him or those around him. Shinichi is very skilled at football, with only one kick, he's able to accurately shoot any small item, with enough force and power, to the intended target, often, leaving them unconscious in the process.

Plot Overview
Because the main plot revolves around the fact that Shinichi has become 'Conan' and is forced into hiding, Shinichi himself appears rarely in the series. However, Conan is frequently shown calling Ran using his voice-changing bow tie to sound like Shinichi. In these instances, it can be said that the character of Shinichi, albeit in the body of Conan, is appearing, since these phone conversations allow Shinichi to be himself, however briefly.

Transformations back into Shinichi
Shinichi appeared in the pilot episode, but by the end he had been transformed into Conan, thus beginning the series' plot.

His next appearance was in Volume 10, when a strange detective from Osaka named Heiji Hattori arrived at Mouri Detective Agency looking for Shinichi in order to determine which of them was the better detective. A strange combination of having a cold and drinking baijiu that Heiji had brought along allowed Conan to briefly grow into Shinichi once again.

In Volume 26, Conan was able to become Shinichi using a prototype that Ai Haibara synthesized. As himself, he tried to surprise Ran by disguising himself as a character in her play, but was interrupted by a murder case and ended up revealing himself to his entire high school. Heiji Hattori covered for him and Shinichi was able to spend about 48 hours as himself, albeit with a brief collapse about halfway through, and turned back into Conan just as he seemed to be about to confess his feelings to Ran.

Shinichi's next appearance was not until Volume 62, when, while on a case with Heiji, Conan went missing and 'Shinichi' seemed to appear. However, the 'Shinichi' is actually someone who had gotten plastic surgery to look like Kudou Shinichi, and was actually trying to blame Kudo for a murder. Then the real Shinichi, who had been hiding in the forest until he could clear his name, appeared. It was revealed he had been temporarily restored by another of Ai's prototypes. After the case, however, Shinichi transform back to Conan, but luckily, Haibara secretly followed him there and give him another antidote, saving him from revealing his identity to Kogoro, Ran and Kazuha. While driving home from the case, the group was stopped by another murder which Shinichi and Heiji investigated together, despite increasing pangs that warned of his iminent reversion to Conan. After the case resolved, Ran tried to stop Shinichi from leaving, saying she had something to tell him. Shinichi stopped her, saying "According to my deductions, what you have to say and what I have to say are the same thing." Ran seized his hand while he was transforming back into Conan, and though Haibara knocked her out with Conan's wristwatch, she refused to let go of his hand. Ai and Professor Agasa had to cut and re-pin Conan's shirt onto him because Ran was still clutching his hand.

Most recently, in Volume 71, the Mouri's were invited to England by a grateful client. However, since 'Conan Edogawa' doesn't have the proper credentials to fly internationally, Ai gave him a prototype pill that Shinichi and Agasa could fly low-profile to England on the same plane that Ran and Kogoro were flying. Ai gave him a second prototype pill for the return journey, but Conan used it while Ran was pursuing him. They came as close as they ever have to openly confessing their feelings for each other, Shinichi told Ran he loved her, but Shinichi soon fled to become Conan again. For the return trip to Japan, it was revealed that Ai had expected him to use his second pill, and had brought extras which allowed him to return to Japan.

Flashback Appearances
Shinichi has appeared in several flashbacks, most notably the flashback of his trip to New York City with Ran when they were sixteen in Volume 35. There, they met Vermouth and Shuichi Akai for the first time.

In Volume 55, a flashback revealed that first-graders Shinichi and Ran had been given a riddle by the Kaitou Kid, Toichi Kuroba.

Non-Canonical Appearances
In Movie 7, Heiji was injured and Kazuha kidnapped; her abductors threatened to kill her unless Heiji showed up for her. Believing Heiji to be unable to do so, Conan contacted Ai and asked if there was any way for him to briefly become Heiji. Ai gave him medicine to simulate the effects of a cold, then the same Chinese liquor that had changed him in his and Heiji's first manga appearance. Conan became Shinichi for approximately an hour, but according to Ai he was extremely weak and sick for the entire time.

In OVA 9, Conan takes another prototype antidote. However, it proves less effective than the prototype she used during the Desperate Revival arc; Conan became Shinichi, but only for a few hours, and remained in a feverish state, unable to wake up until he had reverted back to Conan. During his time unconscious, he had a vivid hallucination that he had grown to age 17 again as Conan and that Ran, aged 27, was about to marry Tomoaki Araide.

Relationships analysis
Since Shinichi is not featured as prominently as Conan throughout the series, only a few of his relationships with other characters have been substantially explored.

Family & Friends
Ran Mouri
Shinichi Kudo and Ran Mouri
Ran Mouri is Shinichi's childhood friend and canonical love interest. They have been friends and playmates since kindergarten, though Shinichi's tendency to drag Ran along into minor trouble caused some censure from her mother. Shinichi has liked Ran since at least the first year of middle school, and turned down any other potential love interests as a result, but she has never realized this. Shinichi was similarly oblivious to Ran's regard, until Ran confessed to Conan that despite his faults, which she is well aware of, she has liked Shinichi for some time. Shinichi has since confessed his feelings to Ran in the non-canon 4th movie 'Captured In Her Eyes' (which Ran mistook as his attempt to get her memories back), and made attempts to say something during temporary cures in the manga and anime, but cases always seem to interfere until the cure runs out.Shinichi since then has finally confessed to Ran in the case in London.

Shinichi's initial disappearance troubled Ran to the point of insomnia and nearly going to the police. Since then, Shinichi sometimes calls Ran over the telephone and imitates his normal voice with the voice-changing bowtie so that she doesn't worry about him. He convinces her that he is off solving a very difficult case and will return once the investigation concludes.citation needed replace with Japanese volume: In reality, he is the brain behind her father's rapid rise to fame as a detective.

Shinichi/Conan is not without sexual fantasies regarding Ran, the most obvious evidence being his nosebleeds or blushing when he sees her in a bathing suit, or when Ran pulled him into an onsen with her.citation needed replace with Japanese volume: For her part, Ran often blushes when thinking of Shinichi, especially when Sonoko teases her about their relationship. Her attitude towards Conan is one of more open, sisterly affection, such as giving him hugs or holding his hand. Shinichi has some concerns of bodily harm should Ran realize that not only has he been lying to her, but they've shared a bed and taken a bath together.

Shinichi and Ran appear to share a close empathic link due to their strong feelings for each other, making each of them feel the other's worry and agitation in times of extreme danger.

clearright

Yukiko and Yusaku Kudo
Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo are both aware that Conan is in fact Shinichi. His parents are even more famous than he is, with Yusaku being a famous mystery novelist and Yukiko being a retired actress. They currently live in the United States and travel extensively, having left Shinichi in Japan on his own when he was fourteen. Though he sometimes finds his parents' carefree ways to be annoying, he loves them dearly. Yusaku is also a detective with the same keen eye for details, and similarly to Holmes' brother Mycroft, Yusaku always seems to solve a case one step ahead of his son.

Professor Agasa
Although not related by blood, there's a strong family-like bond between Shinichi and Hiroshi Agasa. Dr Agasa was the first to know about Shinichi's real identity and was the one to tell him to keep it a secret. Most of the gadgets that Shinichi has where made by Dr Agasa to help him catch the criminals and solve the cases. Dr Agasa also knows about Shinichi's romantic relationship with Ran and sometimes teases him about it in front of her (when he can't do anything about it since he is Conan).

Heiji Hattori
Heiji is often referred to as Shinichi's detective rival from the West. Even though Heiji discovers Shinichi's secret, he decides to keep quiet (though sometimes he slips up and calls him Kudo in front of others). After Heiji realizes the truth they become close friends with a common interest in solving mysteries. They have solved many cases together, and Heiji is the person Shinichi turns to for advice or for confirmation regarding a deduction.

The Detective Boys
Ai Haibara
Ai Haibara is the third girl that seems to have somewhat romantic feelings for Conan/Shinichi, although she never truly admits it. Indeed, it is a mystery just exactly what she feels for him, whether friendship or otherwise. Some people, such as Conan's mother and Gin, have stated that she has feelings for Conan. It could be said that, because of their almost equal level of intelligence as well as similarities in their pasts (i.e. they're both victims of the APTX 4869), she finds it easier to talk to him.

Law enforcement
Juzo Megure
Inspector Megure has worked together with Shinichi to solve many cases. During Shinichi's first case on the plane to New York Megure seemed irritated that Shinichi was poking his nose into a murder case. Since then because Shinichi has proven himself solving cases one after the other Megure has grown to respect Shinichi and his deductive abilities, thanking him for his assistance.

Others
Kaitou Kid
Despite the fact Toichi and Shinichi only met once prior to Toichi's death, it's worth mentioning Toichi referred to Shinichi as his "older brother" and himself as the "younger brother". This is because of Yusaku, Shinichi's father, being the father of the name of Kaitou Kid, Toichi's secret identity. Toichi's son and successor, Kaito, has also only crossed paths with Shinichi as Shinichi once, during the Clocktower heist. Kaito thought Shinichi made the heist harder (and thus less boring) in Saguru Hakuba's absence, and Shinichi found Kid's intention of 'stealing' the Clocktower in order to save it from demolition to be fairly admirable.

People who know Conan's real identity
List of characters who know Conan's identity
There are only a few characters in the series who know Conan's real identity and none have betrayed Conan's identity to date. The main characters to know the secret are Hiroshi Agasa, Conan's parents, Heiji Hattori and Ai Haibara. Ran Mouri always have the intuition of him being Shinichi, like in Episode 96, but ends up being persuaded by him. Vermouth also knows, but for unknown reasons she has kept it a secret from the rest of the Organization. Eisuke Hondou, the younger brother of C.I.A. agent Hidemi Hondou, also knows and keeps Conan's secret. Kaitou Kid also knows Conan's identity in the movies, though it is not clear whether he knows Conan's secret in the actual anime and manga. However, Kid seems to know there is something unusual about Conan, as whenever he tries to publicly steal he usually reveals that he only wants to compete with Conan as thief and detective.

Character popularity
*In a Newtype poll from 2001, Kudo ranked fourth in the category "Top 10 Most Popular Male Anime Characters in Japan." In a Newtype Magazine poll from March 2010, Shinichi was voted as the ninth most popular male anime character from the 1990's.
Name origin
*In Japanese etymology, the name Shinichi means "one truth", which Shinichi occasionally uses as a motto, or more specifically, "There is only one truth" or in the English version, "Only one truth prevails".citation needed replace with Japanese volume:
Trivia
*Shinichi has been mentioned and parodied in many other anime series. See this wiki page for more information.
*He was used as a character to promote people to follow the law in Japan, due to the popularity of the series.
*Shinichi, along with Heiji Hattori, Kaito Kuroba and Saguru Hakuba, are sometimes referred to as 'The Four Geniuses' or 'The Gosho Boys' by fans. If Ai Haibara/Shiho Miyano is included, they are referred to as 'The Five Geniuses.'
*Shinichi seems to have plane narcolepsy, as mentioned in Episode 162 and Chapter 204. This shows up when he is Conan as well.
