Shiho Miyano and her older sister, [[Akemi Miyano]], were born into the secret crime syndicate "The [[Black Organization]]". Her English mother, [[Elena Miyano]], and her Japanese father, [[Atsushi Miyano]], were both scientists working for the Black Organization on a secret project. While Haibara was young, both her parents died in what was claimed to be an accident. While Akemi lived a normal life, the highly intelligent Shiho was groomed to take over her parents' research. She was sent to the United States for education at a very young age, and then later came back to Japan to finish her parents' secret project, "Silver Bullet".<ref>Manga [[Volume 38]], Files 2-4 (384-386) Manga [[Volume 78]], Files 1-7 (818-824)</ref>. By the age of thirteen she was working as a scientist for the Black Organization<ref>Akai started infiltrating the Black Organization five years ago. Shiho was about 18 years old when she developed the experimental test compound [[APTX 4869]]. While researching its effects, she discovered that it could be used as a poison to kill without leaving any traces of itself in a body. She then noticed that one of her lab mice had become smaller instead of dying, though she did not report that effect. Meanwhile, the Black Organization started human trials, using APTX 4869 to commit untraceable murders. Unaware of the drug's rare side effect when they used it on [[Shinichi Kudo]], the Black Organization ordered a search for him because his body had not been found. Shiho and her team searched Shinichi's house twice to confirm his death, however it lead her to suspect Shinichi had shrunk instead. However, Shiho confirmed him as deceased so the organization would not look into the matter further and kill him after all.

Shiho was unhappy that the Black Organization was using the incomplete APTX 4869 for murder, as she believed that was not the drug's intended purpose. When Shiho learned of Akemi's death, but was given no explanation, she decided to boycott her research until the Black Organization gave her an explanation. Instead, the Organization confined her in a small room to await her execution. With no other way out, she took APTX 4869 intending to commit suicide, but instead shrank. In her new, smaller body, she escaped and attempted to reach Shinichi's house. To prevent the knowledge of her transfiguration from being discovered, Shiho and Professor Agasa create her alias ''Ai Haibara''. As Ai Haibara, she attends [[Teitan Elementary School]] with Shinichi Kudo's shrunken form, [[Conan Edogawa]]. Following her first adventure with the [[Detective Boys]], she reveals her true identity as the developer of [[APTX 4869]] to Conan.<ref>Manga Chapter 178: Code Name Sherry</ref>, and also accurately deduces Conan as Shinichi in the shrunken form, though her deduction is based on prior knowledge of her research and investigation of Shinichi Kudo. Haibara has a calm and cool personality, sarcastic wit, and high intelligence. When freshly escaped from the Black Organization, she was cynical and pushed others away. Haibara has since defrosted by embracing her new child life and has established strong relationships with the Detective Boys, Agasa, and Ran.

As Ai Haibara, she speaks and acts older than she is supposed to be, which results in the Detective Boys referring to her as "cool" or "mature". This is emphasized by her impressing general knowledge, even in areas without relation with sciences (such as theology or history<ref>[[Mushrooms, Bears, and the Detective Boys|Episode 212: Mushrooms, Bears, and the Detective Boys]] where she explains the religious myth of the Fall</ref><ref>[[The Evidence That Didn't Disappear|Episode 233: The Evidence That Didn't Disappear]] where she explains the death of Marie-Antoinette</ref>); and on occasion she is so forceful and demanding that she can stun adults several decades above her current physical age into submission. Despite her jaded demeanor, she can be kind and caring, though usually more to animals than people. Haibara is generally a loner and misses her older sister, Akemi, greatly (in the film ''[[Countdown to Heaven]]'', she would call her sister's old apartment just to hear her voice on the voicemail). Her greatest fear is being caught by the [[Black Organization]], and she is especially terrified of [[Gin]] and [[Vermouth]]. She tries to keep Conan from doing reckless things that may give away their identity, though often she is surprised by his actions which usually result in gaining the information he needs while also keeping their identities secret. However, whenever Conan is reckless in regards to keeping his identity from Ran, Haibara is the one who plans ahead in order to keep him from being revealed. Because she occasionally works overnight on the antidote for the APTX 4869, she tends to be tired quite frequently, causing Conan to call her an "evil-eyed yawny girl" on one occasion.<ref>[[Volume 65#Dangerous Couple Case|Manga Chapter 680: A Dangerous Couple]]</ref>

Despite spending most of her time alone at the lab, Haibara shows excellent understanding of reading people's mind. Examples include Haibara deducing that Ayumi had a crush on Conan, figuring out Conan was about to tell his identity to Ran, or understanding the anger of Kobayashi when confronting Inspector Shiratori. Thanks to this ability, Haibara can remind Conan about the situation and make him act appropriately, not to reveal his identity.

In the OVA ''[[A Secret Order From London]]'', Haibara reveals to [[Ayumi Yoshida|Ayumi]] that she likes peanut better and blueberry jelly sandwich, from her schooldays in America, just like the white girl with no functional taste bud and cooking skill she always wants to be. She has also mentioned that she only make it with "American peanut butter and jelly exclusively sold in international grocery store". However, since [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]] caught her eating one of these sandwiches, especially since Haibara was on her part constantly pestering him into eating low-calorie foods only, she had to abandon that habit for a while.<ref>OVA 11: ''A Secret Order From London''</ref>

Haibara seems to have some interest in fashion, as she has made repeated requests for certain types of accessories, particularly of the [[Fusae Campbell|Fusae]] and Prada brands. For instance, when [[Miwako Sato]] declares she would do anything for the one who will solve her father's mystery, she asks for Prada's newest handbag model<ref>[[Metropolitan Police Detective Love Story 3|Episode 205: Metropolitan Police Detective Love Story 3]]</ref>. What's more, in one of the cases, in order to expose the identity of the person who hid the phone cables to cut off communications with the outside world, she was asked by Conan to fake an unbearable appendix pain, which she agreed to after jokingly requesting for a Fusae Brand's wallet for her cooperation. She then started rolling on the floor and screaming for help. Shiho/Haibara was able to deduce Conan as Shinichi by inspecting the clues left in Kudo residence. She shows sharp observation, keen thinking process and ability to make logical deduction; however, unlike Conan/Shinichi, she often lacks specialized knowledge or experience to make the conclusive argument to solve the case. Moreover, to avoid attention, she stays quiet, which Conan often takes the spotlight. Haibara does not identify herself as a "mystery freak" as Conan. In the few cases that Haibara leads the investigation, she shows that she can be a great detective on her own, although this is not her prime speciality. Haibara has also known to read some mysteries like
Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot novels and PD James's Cordelia Gray novel but it is not known whether she enjoys the genre.

Shiho has the ability to sense when Black Organization members are around, which she characterizes as their unique "smell" or "pressure". So far, her sense only detects Black Organization members and not people with malevolent intent generally,<ref>She has only claimed the sense for Black Organization members, and she does not seem to have the same magnitude reaction around people who aren't, such as case culprits, although she may be generally suspicious of them;</ref> however, it doesn't always trigger when Black Organization members are present.<ref>This is the case especially when the Black Organization members aren't focusing or in an aggressive mood. Numabuchi is an example of this.</ref> nor does it reveal their numbers.<ref>The case with Vermouth and Shuichi on the bus, and when she was unsure if Pisco had an accomplice (Vermouth) at the party.</ref> Sometimes the sense is fleeting ([[Subaru Okiya|Subaru]], or [[Shuichi Akai|Shuichi]] passing by pursuing [[James Black]]), or context sensitive (when Akemi was planning the bank robbery).

It is also possible that it mostly activates, when she senses danger, and esp. when she is the target. When she first met Kuroda, she appeared frightened, but she explained later that his face was frightening, and was easily backed up by the rest of the Detective Boys. It momentarily activated in Mystery of the Burning Tent, but it was fleeting, and she says that she likes the teacher, and "Does not want to hear anything bad about her" to Conan, whose only getting much more suspicious of the teacher. So far, she has not met Wakita, or even seen him.

To be truthful, Conan seems to be suspicious of 2, maybe 3 of the new one-eyed people, so maybe her Black Organization sense tranferred to him since those two are primarily interested in him, and not her. In fact, hers may be dissapating, if she feels safe.

=== Pain tolerance ===
[[Gin|Like]] [[Vermouth|other]] Black Organization members, Haibara as Shiho has also demonstrated a strong tolerance for pain. During the initial apoptoxin transformation, Shiho does not scream despite the sensation of 'bones melting', as doing so would likely have ended in being caught and killed when someone came to check on her. It is unclear if she even passes out at all, and regardless she manages to recover quickly enough to escape through a chute/ventilation shaft before her captors know anything happened.

Additionally, she climbs barefoot up a chimney while extremely sick from the effects of a cold combined with [[Baijiu]]-induced regrowth. She then crawls back to the chimney after she is shot multiple times by Gin on the frigid, snowy roof. She still maintains consciousness after falling down the chimney over a story in height and experiencing the agony of reverting back to Ai Haibara. Nowhere during this ordeal or her rescue afterwards did she cry from the pain. Shiho also handled the painful side affects of being reverting back to an adult with a [[prototype antidote]] better than Shinichi.

Shiho/Haibara is familiar with firearms. As Haibara, she was confident enough to intentionally miss a shot with a handgun. Initially Haibara wasn't interested in football, but thanks to Conan she now enjoys watching them and roots for Big Osaka team, with Higo Ryusuke her favorite player. In Movie 16, she performed a long pass through the debris, delivering the ball to Conan for the decisive kick saving the day.

In canon, Haibara has knowledge about classical music. In Movie 12, she played the recorder to send a message to Conan.

In her first appearance, she recognized that a teenager's painting was a Picasso painting, helping Conan to figure out the Detective Boys' client's older brother was kidnapped due to his ability to paint fakes of famous paintings, more importantly, [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natsume_S%C5%8Dseki Natsume Sōseki] on the 1,000 yen bill's portrait.

=== Acting ===
In her first case, after she fired a gun, and was about to be reprimanded for it by Megure, she began her crying act. That act continued for the longest time, and the only one stuck walking her home was Conan.

When they were near the Kudo and Agasa's residence, Conan asked her if she can get home by herself now, since her address is somewhere around here, but he did not recall the address, when she told him at school.

When he began to walk away, she immediately stopped the crying act, and transferred into her Black Organization Role of Sherry, but probably more evil than she ever was in the organization, and all she is doing is talking.

When she really introduced herself to him, she did it in a way, where she showed that she can be quite evil, like the rest of the Black Organization, even telling him that Agasa, who is his lifeline to being a detective in his child's body is dead, really freaking him out.

She was talking and speaking like so many of her cold-blooded former co-workers, and showed no remorse at all, nor did she break character at all.

When he went to Agasa, he was alive and well, and all three spoke, when she finally stopped acting.

Conan's class receives a new student named Ai Haibara. She acts rather cold and reserved when the Detective Boys try to befriend her, and Genta notices she's looking at Conan suspiciously. She tells them where she lives but Conan fails to realize it's at Agasa's home (Tokyo blocks are not numbered in sequential order and Conan has never had reason to learn Agasa's mailing address due to their being neighbors).

After school, a boy named Toshiya asks the Detective Boys to find his missing brother. The Detective Boys along with Haibara investigate Toshiya's house and finds a painting of [[Wikipedia: Natsume Sōseki|Natsume Sōseki]]. Toshiya reveals that before his brother disappeared, a woman, who had an interest in that portrait, approached Toshiya's brother. The Detective Boys search around town to ask whether anyone has seen the woman or Toshiya's brother. Conan notices that a man was using a counterfeit ¥1000 and realizes Toshiya's brother was actually kidnapped and forced to help create counterfeit bills. After following the man along with the clues Toshiya's brother left behind, they are able to apprehend the organized crime group and save Toshiya's brother.

On the way home, Haibara reveals to Conan that she is a former member of the Black Organization, with the code name "Sherry". She actually betrayed the group and escaped with the use of the APTX 4869, which caused her to become a child. She reveals that she once accidentally sent a floppy disk containing data on the Black Organization to her older sister, and the disc is now in the possession of her sister's professor, Masami Hirota.

Agasa takes Conan and Haibara there to retrieve the disk, only to discover that Hirota has been murdered. The suspects are Hirota's three students who visited that day. Conan reveals the culprit to be a man named Akira Shirakura; Shirakura after bludgeoning Hirota to death and tied the answering machine cassette tape around the key to the room which rewound when a call was made, subsequently dragging the key into the room. As evidence, Conan reveals that Shirakura's fingerprints should be found on the tape. After seeing Conan's amazing display of logic after she had given up on the case herself, Haibara breaks down and asks Conan why he could not save her sister, Akemi, from the Black Organization. Conan finally makes the connection that the "Masami Hirota" who Gin killed was actually Shiho's sister, and sympathy for Haibara's attitude stirs in him. The disc is taken into police custody, but once it is released to them Haibara attempts to read the files off the disk—only to have [[Night Baron|a virus]] delete all the data.

The episode opens with Haibara and Conan in what looks to be an abandoned and empty room. Haibara tells him that she (possibly referring to Ran) has found out about his identity. When he asks her why she's telling him all this, she tells him that he can see into the hearts of the wicked, but he couldn't understand a woman's heart, then tells him that she's been in love with him since she met him. We see Conan's face, but it doesn't appear to be at all surprised, and Haibara continues with: "I guess you didn't even notice... Kamen Yaiba-san." After Mitsuhiko yells out "CUT!", it is revealed that both Conan and Haibara were merely acting, and practicing lines for Teitan Elementary School's play, with Mitsuhiko as the director.

In Episode 176-178, Conan encounters Gin and Vodka again. Haibara is kidnapped and confined in a wine cellar by the Black Organization member [[Pisco]], but she escapes before Gin and Vodka arrive by drinking [[baijiu]] to turn back into an adult. Gin anticipates her actions and intercepts her on the roof. He shoots selectively to wound her, intending to force her to explain how she escaped from the Organization before he finally kills her. Conan prevents Gin from killing her by shooting the man with his [[Stun-Gun Wristwatch|tranquilizer wristwatch]]. Conan tells Haibara to jump into the chimney when a distracted Vodka shoots at him but as he's behind a door, he gets away once Haibara has gone down the chimney. Gin purposely shoots himself in the arm to stay awake. Inside the wine cellar, Pisco is about to kill Haibara but Conan rescues her after tricking Pisco into accidentally causing a fire. They make their escape as Pisco tries to find them amidst the fire and smoke. At this point, Gin crawls from the chimney and confronts Pisco, citing his failure to remain in the shadows in his mission and kills him before Pisco is able to tell him the truth that Shiho Miyano has deaged into a young girl. Worried that the Organization is after her, Haibara decides to leave the city. Conan anticipates that Gin will predict her next move as leaving Tokyo so it will be better if she does the unexpected and remains in Beika. Unknown to Conan or Haibara, [[Vermouth]] saw Haibara at the party and uses her expert disguise skills to get closer to Haibara and Conan in order to confirm Haibara's identity as Sherry and then kill her.

While Conan is in the hospital contemplating admitting his identity to her, Haibara enters and points a gun at his head, saying that the Black Organization has found out about her due to an unknown agent being present at the Pisco incident. Because of this, Professor Agasa is held hostage and, in exchange for his life and a chance to return to the Black Organization, Haibara is required to terminate all the links she had in her child identity. However, when she pulls the trigger a bunch of flowers come out, showing that the story was just an act. Still, she uses this story as her point: both Haibara and Conan cannot reveal their identities no matter the situation, in order to prevent such a tragedy from occurring.

During that night, Haibara explains her plan to disassociate Conan from Shinichi in Ran's eyes. She has Conan take a [[prototype antidote]] for APTX 4869 and then disguises herself as Conan. For the rest of the arc, Conan returns as Shinichi while Haibara is present as Conan, thus creating the illusion of Shinichi and Conan existing at the same time, disproving that the two are the same person.

At the end of the Desperate Revival arc, the antidote begins to run out and Shinichi runs into the bathroom, where Haibara is still disguised as Conan already waiting for him. She knows that Shinichi would run into the men´s bathroom after the symptoms of the regress conversion start to appear. Presumably, she leaves Conan's clothes
for Shinichi and changes back into Haibara before leaving with Agasa who's waiting for her in the car park. Returned to the form of Conan once more, Conan returns to where Ran is waiting for Shinichi and tells her Shinichi has to leave urgently on another case.

Haibara and the Detective Boys seem delighted to see Conan again, though the Boys are completely ignorant of who Conan really is.

Vermouth, disguised as [[Tomoaki Araide]], boards a bus that Haibara, Agasa, and the Detective Boys are riding to a ski resort. Whatever plan Vermouth might have had is completely interrupted by the bus being hijacked by random criminals and the presence of two FBI agents that have been tracking her: [[Jodie Starling]] and [[Shuichi Akai]]. Haibara detects Vermouth's presence on the bus. She becomes so afraid that the Detective Boys, Conan, and Agasa will be killed because of her that she decides to commit suicide, deliberately staying behind in the bus which is about to explode. Realising her intent, Conan runs back and with his quick thinking, saves her. He asks her not to run away from life. However, the event caused her to remain anxious for several days.

Conan comments that she should keep that expression, since it makes her look like a child, causing Haibara to blush.

Conan wonders why she did not stay with Professor Agasa, and she answers that she did not want to run away from a dolphin (Ran) who is loved by the ocean (Shinichi/Conan), and a shark (herself) that ran away from the cold and dark bottom of the ocean cannot compete with the dolphin. However, Conan fails to understand this metaphor, which draws a parallel between Ran and Haibara.

This scene is the first time Haibara openly reveals to Conan that she has been hiding important secrets about the Black Organization from him; earlier she [[Black Organization#APTX 4869 and Biochemistry|had lied to him]]. The exchange suggests that Haibara is withholding information because she fears Conan will make a rash move.

Not long after Akai's death, Conan hears fresh intel from the [[FBI]] that a new [[Black Organization]] agent called [[Rei Furuya|Bourbon]] is looking for Shiho, which Conan keeps secret from Haibara. As Conan and Haibara investigate a normal case, Haibara feels that an organization member is around. The organization member which she felt is implied to be one of the innocent suspects, [[Subaru Okiya]]. Conan invites Okiya to live in Kudo's house since Okiya's apartment was burnt to the ground. Okiya appears in other cases later on, including at the Haido mall where the rest of the Black Organization gathered to chase a rumored sighting of a [[Scar Akai|scarred Shuichi Akai]]. Although Okiya is trusted by Conan and Agasa and behaves kindly to Haibara, she remains frightened of him. Later, some of his actions lead her to believe he might be someone she knows and she comes to trust him more, even attempting to uncover his identity when she thought he was asleep.

Haibara is forced to revert to Shiho using a [[temporary antidote]] to save the other children of the group from a fire. A video of her as an adult is sent to the Mouri Detective Agency by Mitsuhiko which Sera, Okiya, and Amuro find out about. Because of this, Haibara is later targeted by a plot concocted by Vermouth and Bourbon aboard the Bell Tree Express Train. Bourbon is revealed to be Amuro and Haibara learns that he knew her parents. Bourbon was hoping to capture Shiho alive, but Vermouth's modifications to his plan which were designed to kill her led to Shiho supposedly being blown up on the train. The Shiho Vermouth and Bourbon thought was killed was really [[Kaitou Kid]] in disguise, Conan having forced him into the plan. Because of this, all of the Black Organization besides Vermouth think Shiho is now dead, and Vermouth is unable to reveal the truth to the rest of them without also compromising Conan, Haibara and their deaged condition against her wishes.

It was particularly precious to her because Ryusuke Higo touched it in the bleachers during the football match. She freezes in disbelief and collapses against the wall. Conan decide to go and with the Detective Boys to find her phone strap, in exchange for the antidotes. At the end, they are able to return the strap but it was partially destroyed. At fisrt, Haibara still refusing Conan's pleas to give him the antidote but she still give him the antidote later on as their hard work for finding the strap.

When he asked an upperclassman if any suspicious person passed by, he was informed that only pizza and sushi deliveries came near the area. Conan then dismisses his suspicion and concludes that Haibara must have been overreacting only.

Having greatly missed her sister Akemi, Ai secretly begins to make a call to an apartment that her sister once stayed in order to hear her voice from the tape recorder. Gin and Vodka, knowing about this habit of hers, plan to track down Asaga's phone number when she makes the call, but their plan is foiled by Conan and Agasa after being informed of this by Genta.

As she begins to bond with the Detective Boys, Ai begins to realize that she herself is no longer all alone or full of sorrow, and is willing to sacrifice herself to allow them to live. She also witnesses both Genta and Mitsuhiko's bravery of not wanting to leave her behind from the time bombed tower, with the former forcefully carrying her to the escape car despite her intention to countdown the time bomb until the end, and the latter holds on to her when she is thrown off the car due to the blaze from the explosion. Ai, knowing of Ayumi's affection toward Conan, also warns him to never make Ayumi cries, else she'll never forgive him.

==== Akemi Miyano ====
The death of Akemi still affects her. It was the death of her sister that led to Haibara's escape from the organization, because no one would tell her the reason. She became aware of the robbery Akemi pulled before her death, but suspected there was more to the story.

In the movie Countdown to Heaven, she kept calling Akemi's number at her apartment just to hear her voice, fully aware that the Black Organization might wiretap and trace to her location. It took extreme measure from Conan to make Haibara abandon this thought.

==== Atsushi Miyano ====
Dr. Miyano was Haibara's father. He passed away when she was barely a year old. Her feelings toward her father is unknown, but she does show interest in seeing the house where he grew up.

==== Elena Miyano ====
Elena passed away when Shiho was a baby. Even though Shiho/Haibara has accepted her passing for a long time, being able to hear her voice via recorded
tapes calmed Haibara down.

==== Conan Edogawa/Shinichi Kudo ====

Both are de-aged by APTX4869 and have almost equal levels of intelligence, which makes Haibara and [[Conan]] close confidants and more empathetic with each other than most other characters. Conan is one of the few people in front of whom she has shown any signs of weakness, such as breaking down over her sister's death. They share an interesting relationship. They believe and rely on each other. She is keenly observant of Conan's personality, intelligence, and sense of justice.

If Conan is in danger, she is willing to throw away her life to save him, overriding fears and concerns for her own safety that would ordinarily paralyze her. Similarly, Conan has saved Haibara's life more than once when she would have sacrificed herself for his and the [[Detective Boys]]' safety. She often enjoys teasing Conan, which he takes in good stride. However, he is oblivious of her feelings towards him and sometimes finds it difficult to deal with her sarcasm and impudent, cold nature. Although in empathy on many matters, they don't fully trust one another with information about the Black Organization out of concern for the safety and feelings of the other. In fact, she has always know that [[Renya Karasuma]] is the Black Organization head, but she never reveals it for Conan's safety.

The relationship between Haibara and [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]] is rather unusual, if not humorous. Despite their actual ages, Haibara often acts more like a mother to the professor, constantly reminding him to watch what he eats. On several occasions, she has removed fattening foods from his reach<ref name=Depths>[[Strategy Above the Depths|Movie 9: Strategy Above the Depths]]</ref>, and is attempting to help get him into better shape. Kogoro jokingly notes in Countdown to Heaven that she acts a lot like Agasa's wife.
There have also been instances where she'll automatically step in front of Agasa in cases of danger.<ref name=Eyes>[[Captured in Her Eyes|Movie 4: Captured in Her Eyes]]</ref> Out of all the people she's met, Haibara seems most comfortable about acting herself with Professor Agasa; which might be attributed to the fact that he was the one who found her after she escaped the Black Organization, and took her in. There are instances where Haibara will caution Conan from actions that involve [[Ran Mouri|Ran]], though it's assumed this is due merely to the fact that
she wants to keep her identity hidden. Early on, she is cold and distant towards Ran, even more so than she is to most other people. Ran believes that it is because Haibara hated her,<ref name=Net>[[The Mystery in the Net|Episode 246-247: The Mystery in the Net]]</ref> though in truth it is because Ran reminds Haibara strongly of her dead sister.

After Ran notices Haibara is not feeling well and carries her to safety during a case, Haibara finally properly introduces herself to Ran, and they slowly became friends. Because Haibara finds that Ran resembles her older sister, Akemi Miyano, she takes special interest in protecting her. Assuming that Conan has romantic feelings for Ran, Haibara feels jealous of her and suffer from considering herself as less attractive than Ran. She even implies that Ran would be similar to a dolphin, when she would only be a shark coming from the cold depths of the sea, indicating that she cannot compete against her<ref>[[The Mystery in the Net|Episode 246-247: The Mystery in the Net]]</ref>. Once when Haibara had a cold and Ran came to bring her some food, Ai pretended to be asleep and Conan said she wasn't being considerate for Ran's good actions towards her. Haibara thought to herself that Conan doesn't understand a thing, but she doesn't want him to anyway, hinting that she has actually romantic feelings towards Conan/Shinichi and is jealous due to his feelings for Ran.

==== Akai Shuichi/Subaru Okiya ====

The first time [[Subaru]] appears, Haibara felt a strange feeling toward him and thought he is a member of the Black Organization. However, the feeling kept coming and going. In later episodes, Haibara doesn't seem to hate him so much anymore. She even tries to uncover Subaru's scarf to check his neck, probably suspecting he was using a device made by Professor Agasa. At one point, she asks him if he bugged Agasa's house because he keeps appearing at opportune moments when they're involved in a case, bringing food hastily put together as an excuse for his presence. She cited one instance in which the food was not cooked and the vegetables were raw.

Currently, although Akai/Subaru knows Haibara's secret identity, Haibara doesn't know Subaru's identity, nor does she know Akai was her deceased sister's boyfriend. Both Akai/Subaru, Conan, and Agasa are keeping such information a secret from Haibara. At one point, Haibara questions if Akai is a "lolicon."

==== Dai Moroboshi ====

Haibara knows [[Dai Moroboshi]] as her sister's boyfriend. She deduces that Dai approaches her sister just to collect information about the Black Organization. She remembered him giving her a promise to protect Akemi. But she also remembers him as 'the one, who betrayed the organization', so there is a possibility that she has heard another story of what happened. Later on, she meets a [[Scar Akai|guy]] similar to him in [[The Jet-Black Mystery Train]] and wonders how he got the scar on his face.

==== Heiji Hattori ====
Heiji is one of the few character who know Conan and Haibara's secret identity, as well as the effect of APTX 4869. In general, Heiji and Haibara rarely meet each other. His hot temperament is a trait that Haibara dislikes. However, on more than one occasion, Haibara trusts Heiji to keep the secret of the drug and to keep Conan/Shinichi safe when Conan temporarily reverts back to Shinichi.
Haibara also shows a mischievous side towards Heiji. At one point when Heiji (kinda) confessed to Kazuha, Haibara used the recorded speech as her ringtone.

Haibara has tried to keep an emotional distance away from the rest of the Detective Boys at the beginning. However, over time, she can't resist their boistorous friendliness anymore and gradually warms up to them. When she was first introduced, she would often stay off to the side of whatever activity the Detective Boys were doing while later arcs, such as the Sweet and Cold Delivery Service arc, open with her playing soccer with them, and even mentally as she's about to do one of Higo's moves.

At one time, Ayumi noticed that she called everyone by their first names except for Haibara and decided to try and call her "Ai-chan", but without success. At the end of a case which involved a shattered friendship, Haibara told Ayumi that it was okay for her to call her "Ai-chan". Shiho Miyano and her older sister, Akemi Miyano, were born into the secret crime syndicate known unofficially as the [[Black Organization]]. Shiho's English mother, [[Elena Miyano]], and Japanese father, [[Atsushi Miyano]], were both important researchers for the Black Organization. They both died in what other members of the Black Organization described as an accident while Shiho was very young.

Her only real friend was Akemi, who only involved herself in the organization to get Shiho out.

Shiho was about 18 years old when she developed the most current incarnation of the experimental test compound [[APTX 4869]]. Although it was not her intended purpose<ref>Manga Volume 18, File 9, page 9</ref>, she discovered that it could be used as a poison to kill without leaving any traces of itself in a body. While researching its effects, Shiho noticed that one of her lab mice had become younger after being given the drug instead of dying. Meanwhile, the Black Organization started using APTX 4869 to commit untraceable murders.

After the death of her sister at the hands of Gin, she rebelled against the Black Organization, refusing to complete any work for them until she received a satisfactory explanation for why her sister was killed. Instead she was confined to a small room to await the boss decided her execution. She took an APTX 4869 pill she had pocketed earlier to commit suicide, but shrank instead to elementary school child age. That allowed her to slip her handcuffs and escape via a rubbish chute. Her only hope was her suspicions about the potential survival of [[Shinichi Kudo]], the only unconfirmed death of the human trial subjects. She fled towards Shinichi's house, but collapsed in the rain outside the house of Shinichi's neighbor, [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]]. Agasa found and adopted her, and she now lives with him under the alias [[Ai Haibara]].

Initially, Shiho was very cynical, which was reflected in her valuing her own security above idealistic principles of justice. She also did not wish to become close to others. While attending school in America, she ate lunch alone<ref>[[Volume 30|Volume 30, File 303: "Genta's Misfortune"]]</ref>. It was only by repeatedly approaching her that the [[Detective Boys]] and [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] finally became her friends. Shiho was also untrusting of others in general, and preferred to put on an expressionless, cold mask while bottling up her pain and sadness. Shiho's views about death have been complex and at times contradictory. She was prepared to likely kill [[Ki'ichiro Numabuchi]] with APTX 4869 as part of her tests, but on the other hand, she detested the Black Organization's use of APTX as a killing tool and Conan labeling her as a murderer.
Her fascination with her work seems to be stronger than fear for the organization, while she was still a member, since she risked changing Shinichi Kudo's data to avoid him getting killed before she could study him.

== Plot overview ==
=== Prior to escape ===
After being orphaned by the death of [[Atsushi Miyano|her]] [[Elena Miyano|parents]] at a young age, Shiho was groomed to take over their [[APTX 4869]] research project. She was educated overseas in America before returning to Japan at or before she was 13. She became a high ranking member, codenamed Sherry, in the Black Organization's internal drug development division.<ref>Conan Drill page 237</ref> When she was about 13,<ref>Five years before present timeline</ref> undercover [[FBI]] agent [[Shuichi Akai]] began dating Shiho's sister [[Akemi Miyano]] in order to use Shiho's rank to his advantage while infiltrating the Black Organization.

During the 5+ years Shiho worked in the Black Organization lab, Akemi was Shiho's lifeline to normalcy and her primary emotional support within the darkness of the Black Organization. Akemi would arrange meetings with Shiho in restaurants and such to chat about current happenings, and Shiho would sometimes tell Akemi about her Black Organization activities, although it appears she did not go into much detail.<ref name="Akemi Meeting">Volume 18, File 10, Page 15</ref> Akemi would also send Shiho floppies of pictures of her travels and friends which Shiho would quickly look at. During this time, Shiho accidentally mixed up the disks and mailed a disk of extremely sensitive information back to Akemi by mistake. The disk eventually would up in the hands of Akemi's professor friend, Masami Hirota.

Shiho received the data about him, but he managed to escape the Black Organization before she could test it on him. Shiho fled the Black Organization herself soon after, so her superiors never found a substitute test subject. [[Shinichi Kudo]] wound up being the first "guinea pig" of APTX 4869 according to [[Gin]], who decided to use the newly approved poison to kill him after Shinichi witnessed a Black Organization transaction.

Unaware of the APTX 4869's rare deaging side effect when they used it on Shinichi Kudo, the Black Organization ordered a search for him because his body had not been found. As the creator of the drug, Shiho was part of the team who searched Shinichi's house twice to confirm his death. She began to suspect Shinichi's transformation when she noticed his clothes from primary school had disappeared between the first and second searches. Sometime earlier, one mouse dosed with APTX 4869 had become younger, so she suspected something similar had happened to Shinichi. Shiho did not want the Black Organization to kill such an interesting "test subject" before she could examine him, so Shiho confirmed Shinichi as deceased so the organization would not look into the matter further. Shiho later met with Akemi and told her that she went to Kudo's house in Beika city to "look after something".<ref name="Akemi Meeting"/>

==== Akemi's robbery plan and death ====

Meanwhile, Akemi Miyano wished that she and Shiho could leave the Black Organization. The Black Organization itself was in an awkward position as Akemi had been in love with the FBI spy, Shuichi Akai, whose true allegiance had since been uncovered when Shiho was about 16.<ref>Two years before present timeline</ref> The Black Organization could not simply kill Akemi because that would jeopardize the loyalty of Shiho, who was valuable to the Black Organization's research efforts. Exasperated, the Black Organization came up with a trap for Akemi; they told her that she could leave the Black Organization with Shiho if she would rob 10 billion yen from a bank for them. The Black Organization expected Akemi to fail, which would give them the excuse to eliminate her while keeping Shiho loyal; however Akemi, with a team of robbers, succeeded in obtaining the money.

In the event of her success, the Black Organization had designed the second part of the robbery plan so that Akemi's assistants would kill each other or be unintentionally killed by the unwitting Akemi. However one accomplice had fled, forcing Akemi to use detective [[Kogoro Mouri]] to find him. After her first meeting with Kogoro, Akemi met with Shiho again.<ref name="Akemi Meeting"/> Akemi had not told Shiho about the robbery plan, but it seems that Shiho's detection of the Black Organization aura from Akemi<ref>Mitsuhiko's Mystifying Forest case (some translations do not have this line correct)</ref> and gossip had made Shiho aware that Akemi had done something dangerous. Without telling Shiho about the robbery, Akemi redirected the conversation to [[Conan Edogawa]], whom Akemi said was brilliant and had the composure of an adult. This conversation likely helped Shiho deduce Conan's identity as the missing Shinichi.

Later, after all the accomplices were killed, Akemi planned to hand access to the money over to Gin and Vodka at the shipyard.<ref>This is based on the manga version of this case. The anime alters this scene</ref> Instead, Gin murdered Akemi. A newspaper took a photo of the crime scene that included Conan looking downcast. Shiho later identified Conan using it.

Shiho already resented the Black Organization for using the incomplete APTX 4869 for killing purposes, but the news of Akemi's death was the final straw that induced Shiho to boycott her research until she received an official explanation for why her sister was killed. She was aware that Akemi pulled out a robbery, but Shiho might have suspended that there was more to the story. The Black Organization refused, and faced with the possibility that Shiho could defect or do something else drastic in revenge, decided to cut their loses by executing Shiho.

Awaiting the boss decided her execution, Shiho was handcuffed to a wall in a sealed room that also featured a garbage chute too small for an adult to fit in. With no other way out, she took a pill of APTX 4869 she had pocketed to commit suicide before she could be killed, but instead she shrank into a six- or seven-year-old girl. In her new, smaller body, she slipped her hand free of the cuff and used the garbage chute to escape the sealed room. She then attempted to reach Shinichi Kudo's house, hoping he might be able to help her. Exhausted, she collapsed in front of Kudo's house, where she was found by [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]], who eventually adopted her.<ref>Manga Chapter 179: The Girl Made Of Lies</ref> After this, Shiho Miyano took up the role of Ai Haibara. In [[Reunion with the Black Organization]], Conan and Haibara find Gin's [[Cars#Porsche 356 A|Porsche]] by chance. Conan plants a tracker and transmitter in the parked car and eavesdrops on Gin and Vodka when they return. Gin calls an agent named [[Pisco]] and discusses part of a plan to kill someone at a mourning party that will take place at the [[Haido City Hotel]]. Gin tells Pisco he can use the [[APTX 4869|"experimental detective"]] if needed. Gin then finds the tracker and destroys it, believing Sherry placed it there because he also found a single red hair that Haibara inadvertently lost while Conan was planting the bugs. Gin then warns Pisco about Sherry. Although initially reluctant, after hearing Pisco has APTX, Haibara decides to go to the party to try to obtain a sample. Pisco, who knew Shiho as a child, recognizes her as Haibara, kidnaps her using chloroform, and confines her in a wine storage room in another part of the hotel. He doesn't get the opportunity to tell anyone about his discovery because the police are rounding up suspects for the mourning party murder and he is one of them.

After Haibara wakes up, Conan tells Haibara to drink some [[baijiu]] in order to escape. While waiting for the change to occur, she copies some APTX data from a computer Pisco left behind onto a floppy disk. Haibara turns back into Shiho and changes into some leftover janitor clothes that Pisco left behind in the room as part of his disguise. Gin and Vodka break into the storage room looking for Pisco, but Shiho manages to hide herself just before they arrive by bracing her body in the chimney. Unfortunately, Gin hears her breathing and finds another one of her hairs. Instead of simply shooting her in the chimney, however, he goes to the roof to wait for her to finish climbing.

After she climbs out of the chimney, Shiho is confronted by Gin, who shoots her from behind. After exchanging some banter, Gin demands to know how Shiho escaped from the locked chamber room. Shiho remains silent, so Gin shoots her several more times non-fatally, hoping she will crack. Eventually, Gin and Vodka realize she won't talk, so Gin prepares to kill her. Conan meanwhile has arrived and darts Gin in the back with his tranquilizer watch. Using the voice changer to disguise his voice, Conan orders her to get back to the chimney. Vodka shoots Shiho just as she reaches the chimney, so Shiho falls down awkwardly.

In the fireplace, Shiho reverts back into Ai Haibara while Pisco watches. He congratulates her for having made so much progress on the APTX, whose effects he has just witnessed. He tells Shiho he was a close friend of the Miyanos while they were still alive, and they told him much about the drug they were developing. He knew her from when she was a baby, even though Shiho does not remember him. Pisco prepares to shoot her, but Conan stops him by distracting him at the last minute. Conan manages to trick Pisco into setting himself and the room on fire, and carries Haibara out of the room on his back before Pisco can find them again. Gin comes down the chimney and confronts Pisco. Before Pisco is able to tell Gin the truth about Shiho and APTX 4869, Gin kills Pisco for accidentally getting his picture taken in the act of murder during the mourning party.

Conan sneaks Haibara to Agasa's beetle and gives her his jacket. Haibara then lies to Conan about losing the disk of APTX data she copied.<ref>The bloody disk is on the bottom of the stack shown in Volume 25 File 9 (Chapter 251), Page 8 and Episode 188.</ref> Worried that the organization knows that she has shrunk, Haibara tells Conan she must leave the city. Agasa tells Haibara that her identity is safe because he eavesdropped on the conversation when Gin killed Pisco by using the tracking glasses Shiho dropped when she fell down the chimney.

On a camping trip in Gunma, the Detective Boys run across a murderer burying a body and are chased to a cabin in the woods where the killer and the victim had been staying. The murderer bars the door and sets the cabin alight with the children inside. The strength of the children is not enough to open the door and Ayumi passes out from the smoke. With Conan nowhere nearby, Haibara takes a temporary [[Antidote (Prototype)|antidote]], borrows the victim's clothing, and uses the murder weapon - an axe - to break down the door. Mitsuhiko, not realizing who she is, films her carrying Ayumi from the burning cabin and mails the video to Kogoro hoping he would find their savior. Bourbon logs into Kogoro's computer and sees the video, precipitating the events on the Bell Tree Express.

To counter [[Rei Furuya|Bourbon]] and [[Vermouth]]'s plan to capture or kill Shiho aboard the Bell Tree Express, Conan, with [[Subaru Okiya]] and [[Yukiko Kudo]]'s help, devised a plan to keep Haibara hidden and force the ignorant [[Kaitou Kid]], only present to scout ahead for a future heist, to disguise as Shiho and confront Bourbon. Bourbon wound up confronting "Shiho" and fell for the thief's disguise because Haibara told Kaitou Kid what to say. In the confusion that followed, Subaru Okiya separated the rearmost carriage from the train, which then blew up because Vermouth had planted explosives there intending to kill Shiho to prevent Bourbon from capturing her alive. Kaitou Kid escaped in the nick of time, but the rest of the Black Organization, sans Vermouth, now believe Shiho Miyano is dead.

Akemi's death had enough emotional impact to convince Shiho to betray the Black Organization by boycotting her research, even though she knew the act of defiance would likely result in her own death. Indicating that her sister was more important to Shiho than her research. Shiho greatly misses Akemi. In the non-canon [[Movie 5]], Shiho's desire to hear Akemi's voice again, even if only a message on a phone answering machine, was used by Gin and Vodka to nearly pinpoint Shiho's location.

Elena died when Shiho was young, so Shiho doesn't remember much of her. Elena left tapes for Shiho for each of her birthdays. Some of the messages are serious and mysterious, but others are more lighthearted and reveal things about Elena's past. It is clear from the tapes Elena loved Shiho very much, and Shiho misses her mother in turn and takes comfort in hearing her voice.

== Background ==
Gin is a high-ranking "executive agent", often giving the other members their orders and supervising group missions. He works in the "[[Black Organization#Organization structure and divisions|general oversight division]]" along with [[Vodka]] who is his partner. Despite his high ranking leadership position, he often takes to the field to participate in missions, complete business transactions, and assassinate people. When on missions, he is typically the one giving orders, even to agents who are equally ranked, like Vermouth. Gin seems to be able to communicate freely with the [[The Boss|boss]].

Virtually nothing of Gin's history before the present timeline is known. From the FBI's discussion, he was in a high ranking position, perhaps the same one, two years ago, and his appearance has not changed between then and the current timeline.

Two years ago, FBI agent [[Shuichi Akai]], who was on a infiltration mission, was promoted to the codename Rye. He was called to work under Gin and a meeting for them was set in a warehouse. The FBI staked out the warehouse hoping to capture Gin as it was believed he could lead them to the boss,<ref name=599p9>Manga Volume 58, File 2, pg 9: "Akai's Past"</ref> but the Black Organization discovered Akai's true allegiance and Gin never appeared.<ref name=599p10>Manga Volume 58, File 2, pg 10: "Akai's Past"</ref>

When the tracker placed on the new agent [[Hidemi Hondou|Rena Mizunashi]] indicated she was in a warehouse where she shouldn't be, Gin and Vodka went to investigate. At the time she was meeting with her father and fellow CIA agent, [[Ethan Hondou]]. Recognizing that if Gin discovered the situation he would know they were spies, Ethan committed suicide to protect Hidemi by making it look like she had confronted him for being a spy and had killed him. Gin believed the ploy.

Of the high ranking members of the Black Organization shown, Gin is the most loyal: he follows the boss' orders most closely and virtually never acts against the Organization's greater interests. Gin is a merciless and efficient assassin. He has no compunctions about killing or threatening fellow teammates. Fitting his icy personality, Gin's displayed range of emotions so far is relatively limited. Wearing a threatening smirk, he enjoys hunting traitors, watching the plans he has concocted succeed, and cornering his targets. Although he seems to take satisfaction with taking out someone personally, Gin is also satisfied with orchestrating a target's death even if he does not pull the trigger himself.<ref>In the Red Shirt's case while Gin was staking out the Beika department store waiting for Scar Akai to appear, he replies to Kir's remark that "Why don't you [Gin]... just enjoy the fact your nemesis is gone?" with "Yeah, I'm so happy... If he is still alive, I get to kill him again." This shows that Gin considers Akai's death as "his kill" even though it was Kir who pulled the trigger at Raiha pass, and if scar Akai is killed, it will be Chianti or Korn who finishes the job. Gin doesn't seem to enjoy Vermouth's antics; he tried to put an icepick through her head after she disguised herself as a waiter to tease him. Gin is very skilled in his managerial role; he keeps the boss informed on current happenings, yet is also a decisive and quick acting leader in his own regard. Gin often consults the boss about actions that may have potentially serious ramifications, like getting permission to kill Kogoro, who is popular and closely connected to the police, after Gin found a [[Microphone|listening device]] and [[Criminal Tracking Glasses|tracking device]] on Kir's shoe that he believes were planted by the detective. Although Gin follows all orders from the boss, he acts on his own initiative on more than one occasion. One such action was deciding to poison [[Shinichi Kudo]] with the recently approved [[APTX 4869]] at [[Tropical Land]] after Gin caught him spying. Gin's effective leadership is shown in how he manages the diverse personalities of his team on missions. If Gin feels any frustration or scorn regarding the behavior or abilities of any of his teammates, he does not show it unless it is actively interfering with his plans or threatening the Organization. However, that doesn't stop him from being contemptuous about others behind their backs.<ref>Gin disliked Pisco, but did not show it while detailing him about his mission. Gin only complains about Bourbon, Vermouth, and Pisco when they are not around (Bourbon, Vermouth) or their opinion does not matter. (Pisco)</ref> The other members' respect for Gin keeps them in line and coerces them into obeying orders. Only Vermouth has actively objected to Gin's plans on a mission. He also respects the desires of his teammates to a certain degree, even though he may distrust them. Despite his personal suspicions, he let Vermouth persuade him to leave Conan and Kogoro alone, and he decided not to kill anyone at the hospital after [[Rena Mizunashi|Kir]] requested it even though he was unsure of her loyalty.

However, Gin has two notorious weaknesses. He has difficulty remembering the faces and names of those he has killed. Vodka's memory makes up for this somewhat, but Gin notices connections later as a result. As soon as Gin becomes suspicious of someone he gets to work looking into them,<ref>Manga Chapter 700: Dangerous Area</ref> but if his suspicions are proven wrong he tends to lose interest completely.<ref>Vodka's report about "Shinichi" appearing on the Ghost Ship.</ref><ref name=Scar/><ref>Movie 13: [[The Raven Chaser]]</ref> His more conventional logic has also meant he has missed important deductions. This was most notable when Gin decided to stop searching lockers because no adult could fit in them, apparently overlooking that one of the lookouts had mentioned a kid entering the station earlier, although this was mentioned to Vodka, and not to him, and Vodka did not notify him of that fact.

In Black Impact, it might also be suggested that he is quick to jump to conclusions, as seen in a previous episode.

He found a strand of [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]]'s hair in his car, and he immediately convinced himself that [[Shiho Miyano|Sherry]] is the one that planted the bug, which was planted by Conan in his own car, without any other proof, In Black Impact, he is still convinced that the bug is hers, without trying to deduce where she got it from.

In Black Impact, Conan planted a bug and transmitter outside Rena's apartment, to help with a ding dong dash case. She did hire Kogoro to help solve the case. After that case was resolved, Conan completely forgot about the bug and transmitter completely, and just walked off.

He began remembering it, when it began raining. To make matters more interesting, the rain dislodged them from the wall, and it was immediately stepped on by Rena, and stuck to one of her shoes.

Shortly afterwards, Conan heard the 7 children melody, her talk to Gin, Vodka, Vermouth, Chianti, and Korn, and that her code name is Kir, and managed to stop one assassination attempt before Kir got hurt, and was taken to the Haido Central Hospital.

Shortly afterward, Gin found the bug and transmitter that was stuck on Kir's shoe, and was convinced Kogoro planted it, and he immediately changed their target to [[Kogoro Mouri|Detective Kogoro Mouri]].
Nothing could convince him that it was not planted by Mouri at all, not even when Akai sniped the bug and transmitter, and was sniping at the snipers.

It did not change at all, when Conan managed to kick a soccor ball hard into the Detective Agency window, and asked, "Uncle, how is the horse races going?" Even though they found out that Kogoro was merely listening to the horse races, Gin did give the order to kill Kogoro and the [[Conan Edogawa|little kid]], which thankfully, Akai diverted their attention to him instead.

Akai's plan worked, and they thought that the FBI planted the bug and transmitter, but nothing could convince him that Detective Kogoro Mouri was innocent of any meddlling in their affairs.

== Appearance ==

Gin is a tall, thin man of uncertain age. His most noticeable feature is his long silver hair that goes down to his hips. (In the anime, Gin's hair was light-brown at first, then blond, then finally changed to match the manga as can be seen in the 13th movie: [[The Raven Chaser]].) It is cut at the front into bangs which often obscure his eyes, which are blue (like all the other characters) in the manga, and green in the anime. He has, as Shinichi had put it, the eyes of someone who has easily killed many people without a care.<ref name=Eyes/> In the manga, his face is somewhat gaunt, with visible cheekbones and a triangular dark patch below each eye. Later in the series he receives a scar on his left cheek after a bullet from Shuichi Akai's rifle grazes him.<ref name=Scar>Manga Chapter 504: Black Organization vs. FBI 2</ref>

Gin's look has never changed in all of his appearances. He wears a black fedora with a grey or white hatband. His only shown outfit is a knee length, notched lapel, black trenchcoat with the collar upturned to obscure part of his face and a loose white turtleneck underneath. He likely also wears a ballistic vest beneath these. He wears black trousers and black dress shoes. When trying to avoid leaving fingerprints, he dons a pair of white gloves, black in the anime.

Gin is quite perceptive and intelligent.<ref name=Smart/>. He can smell out traps his partner Vodka easily falls for. Gin is also good at deduction. He correctly infers the FBI plan to move the captured Organization member Kir, and also explains to Vodka the biological principles behind why an old man with severe heart conditions wouldn't go to a cold cabin in the dead of winter. Unlike most intelligent characters in the series, Gin also relies on his good instinct. A few times so far, he correctly suspects there is more to a situation than the evidence alone indicates. He correctly suspects that Kogoro (really Conan) was not completely innocent<ref>Volumes 48, Files 9-10, Volume 49, Files 1-4, Chapters 599-504</ref> and that getting Kir back from the FBI was too easy. At one point while searching for the "clever fox" who set them up, Gin begins opening child size lockers on a whim. He just stops at the one Conan was hiding in and chides himself for doing so because there was no way an adult could hide in those lockers.<ref>Volume 38, File 1, Chapter 383</ref> By the close of the Bourbon arc, he is aware [[Conan Edogawa|someone]] is investigating the organization and that there are likely spies within it, thus a purge is justified.

In his first appearance in the series, Gin goes to [[Tropical Land]] with Vodka to complete a transaction with [[Black organization#Unnamed Weapons Smuggler|a company owner]] they were blackmailing for gun smuggling. The two board the Mystery Coaster before the meeting to observe from the pinnacle of the coaster if the business man had come alone to the meeting spot below the ferris wheel. A murder occurs on the coaster and the two are forced to remain at the scene as suspects, although Gin yells at [[Shinichi Kudo]] and [[Juzo Megure|Inspector Megure]] several times to hurry up and let them go. Shinichi observes that Gin has the appearance and air of a cold-blooded killer. They are released after Shinichi apprehends the true killer. His and Vodka's suspicious appearance cause Shinichi to follow them and encounter them completing the transaction with the businessman. Gin, who seems to have been keeping watch, knocks down Shinichi with a pipe he found, then force-feeds him [[APTX 4869]]. His parting words to Shinichi are "So long, great detective."

Before the current storyline, undercover [[FBI]] agent [[Shuichi Akai]] dated [[Akemi Miyano]], the older sister of [[Shiho Miyano]], in order to infiltrate the Organization. Akai's true allegiance was discovered and he was expelled from the organization. Initially, the Organization couldn't do anything about Akemi because they needed the loyalty of her sister Shiho Miyano, who very valuable as a researcher on the APTX 4869 project.

Two years later the Organization decided that the risk of her contact with Akai was too much. They decided to create a situation where they could eliminate her by having her do a bank heist she was supposed to fail, and Gin was put in charge of making a deal with her. Akemi Miyano was told that the only way that she and [[Shiho Miyano|her sister]] would be allowed to leave the Black Organization was to successfully pull off a 10 billion yen bank robbery. After succesfully completing the robbery and tricking her into accidentally poisoning one of her team members, she confronts Gin at the shipping yard to complete the transaction. She tries to tell Gin to hold up his end of the bargain, but he tells her the Organization wouldn't let her sister leave anyway because she was too valuable. He then kills Akemi and flees.

Gin and Vodka are tasked with eliminating a former business parter who had become useless by tricking her into making a transaction with them involving what she thinks is information about 400 million yen worth of gold. Their plan is set aboard a [[Wikipedia: Shinkansen|Shinkansen]]. During a meeting in the dining car, Gin and Vodka will receive a large case of money from the client who will be given a black attaché containing what she believes is the gold information. However, the case actually contains a bomb rigged to explode when she calls a certain number on her mobile phone.

Conan almost walks into Gin's legs when Gin and Vodka board the Shinkansen. Vodka yells at Conan, and Gin glares coldly, but neither recognize him. It is much later revealed Gin is particularly bad at remembering the faces of those he killed. They sit down nearby with their black attaché case. When they leave to go to the dining car and make the transaction, Conan bugs their seats. After they return with the suitcase full of the client's money, Conan overhears Gin explain to Vodka the details of the bombing plan. Conan is also able to learn Gin and Vodka's codenames. Gin and Vodka disembark at Nagoya to avoid being caught in the explosion, and Conan is stopped from chasing them by Ran. Conan then turns his attention to finding the bomb and successfully ejects the black case from the train before it explodes. Unfortunately, the client knows little about Gin and Vodka or their Organization so the police are unable to do anything.

Gin and Vodka were supposed to kill Sherry because she stopped all work on the APTX project to boycott the Organization's reticence about Akemi Miyano's death. Gin and Vodka pull Shiho from her lab and handcuff her to a pipe in a small locked room to await the Organization's judgment. At this time, Sherry takes the Apoptoxin 4869 she had hidden to commit suicide, but instead she shrinks and escapes through a rubbish chute. When Gin and Vodka return, she isn't there. They and many other members of the Organization are ordered to find her, but he and Vodka have no luck. Gin in particular is shown to have an obsession with capturing Sherry and killing her himself.

One day, Conan and Haibara saw Gin's car on a street. They attached a transmitter to it only some seconds before he arrived there. After a while, Gin found an auburn hair in the car and he deduced it was Shiho's. He also found the transmitter and destroyed it, after that is the famous moment when he imagines Shiho naked.
However, Conan and Haibara knew he was going to go to the Haido Hotel, so they followed him too. There, Pisco kidnapped Haibara and took her to a room with a big fireplace. When Gin and Vodka arrived at the room, she (with her adult body because of the Baikal) was hidden in the fireplace. Gin heard her breathing, and intercepted Haibara at the roof when she tried to flee, shooting her many times. When he was ready to kill her, Conan arrived and shot a sleeping dart at Gin. However, he showed a resistance to it, not falling asleep instantly, and shot himself in the arm so that he could stay conscious. After that, he climbed down the chimney, killed Pisco and climbed back up. He returned to his car with Vodka and Vermouth and conversed about Sherry or Shiho. In this chapter, it is hinted that he knows Shiho very well, predicting her movements and being able to confidently identify her by just a hair she left in his car.

Haibara senses that Vermouth is on that bus and hides to prevent herself from getting caught. Soon after, the bus gets hi-jacked by two armed men who uses the passengers as hostages and demands the city to release their boss. Conan attempts to search a way to apprehend the men, and investigates their bags and realize that they contain explosives.

Once arriving at their destination point, Conan reveals that the two people are the jewelry robbers. Conan reveals that they hijacked a car as evidenced by the man's inability to handle the foreign car and how coins were found in the ashtray yet the man is a smoker. Conan apprehends the two culprits and proceeds to the subway. Once there Conan places the CD containing the program the Black Organization wants and places it in a coin locker with a check sticking out of the prearranged locker. Vodka arrives and takes the CD but is stopped by Gin who revealed that there is tape on the CD which means that someone was trying to get his fingerprint. Gin finds a tracker device. He places his hand on the case to find out its warm meaning the one who set up the disk is nearby. Conan manages to hide in a coin locker and passes out due to the lack of oxygen; He is found by Haibara the next day.

Gin has been ordered by the boss to look into Vermouth's movements related to a Halloween party aboard a ship and tells Vodka to board in costume and investigate. Gin has no idea what Vermouth is doing but tells Vodka to kill her if she does anything weird even if she is the boss’s favorite. Aboard the ship, a man blackmailed by Vermouth kills the ship's captain, and the murder is solved by [[Heiji Hattori]] in disguise as Shinichi Kudo. Vodka initially reports Shinichi's presence to Gin, but then corrects the information when Heiji takes off the Shinichi disguise and states that he was hoping that appearing as Shinichi would lure the real guy out.

The murderer then begins shouting that someone named Vermouth forced him to murder the captain. Vodka presumably reports this development to Gin who reports to the boss because Vermouth later receives a message from the boss ordering her back. Vermouth, who was never aboard the ship in the first place, is badly injured by [[Shuichi Akai]] and a self-inflicted gunshot and calls Gin from a telephone booth for pickup because she can't move. While on the phone, Gin asks her if she knows someone named Shinichi Kudo and she lies, saying she doesn't know him.

Gin coordinates the assassination of Domon Yasuteru. His first plan, is to get Domon interviewed using Kir, have him sit down on a bench, where [[Chianti]] and [[Korn]] to kill him. His backup plan; which consisted of Vermouth in disguise crashing in front of Domon's car, after which Kir, Chianti, and Korn would kill Domon and his two bodyguards, was canceled when he discovered the transmitter Conan set up. Gin assumes the transmitter was set up by Kogoro, and gets permission from the boss to kill him. However, the assassination of Kogoro is interrupted by Conan whose soccer ball breaking Mouri's window distracts Chainti and Korn who were taking aim. Over the protests of Vermouth, Gin orders the two snipers to kill Conan as well for, as Vodka says, being suspicious. This too is interrupted when Shuichi Akai snipes the transmitter out from between Gin's fingers from 700 yards away. A brief exchange of gunfire ensues, but ends quickly after Akai shoots out Gin's scope and puts two bullets in his flak jacket. Gin recognizes the disadvantage and orders the Black Organization members to disperse without taking any more action against Conan or Kogoro. Gin and the other operatives assume the transmitter was set up by the FBI, but still has residual suspicions about Kogoro. Gin eventually decides not to kill Kogoro at the word of Vermouth.

He doubted her allegiances to the Organization and was suspicious of her so he put her at gunpoint and forced her to call Akai to tell him to meet her somewhere. He tells her he will be watching the whole assassination so if she planned on doing anything suspicious, he would kill her. Kir kills Akai, actually helped him to fake his death, and Gin is reassured of her allegiance to the Organization.

Scar Akai, along with [[Subaru Okiya]], is trapped in the department store as a bomber has taken them hostage. When the Black Organization spot that someone who looks like Akai entered the store, Gin and Vodka park outside the store. Gin holds a gun to Kir's head, saying that he'll kill her if Akai is still alive. Before Gin orders Chianti to shoot Scar Akai, Vermouth appears and speaks with Gin about a plan she received the boss' authorization for. Scar Akai notices Chianti taking aim at him and smirks, which makes her lose her aim and allows Scar Akai to disappear into the crowd. Gin lowers the gun from Kir's head and decides to drop the assassination attempt, commenting how Bourbon likes to do what he pleases.

After finding out from Vermouth that Sherry was going to board the Bell Tree Express train, Gin and Vodka organized an effort to place enough explosives at the train's destination station to blow up the entire train. Meanwhile, Vermouth and [[Rei Furuya|Bourbon]] boarded the train with a separate plan in mind to catch Sherry. When Vodka wondered how Vermouth and Bourbon were going to get off the train before it arrived at the station, Gin revealed that he didn't know or care about their fates. Vermouth's attempted assassination of Sherry wound up stopping the train before it arrived at the destination station, rendering Gin's plan moot. Gin asked for confirmation that Sherry was killed, which Vermouth endorsed only to find out soon after that she had been tricked. Because Vermouth kept this deception secret, Gin believes Shiho to be dead.

A mask with forged lipstick mark is left behind with the empty getaway vehicle by an unknown party to implicate Hirota. Later that night, Gin and Vodka assassinate the two other bank robbers and place Hirota's lipstick at the crime scene. After realizing she was set up my someone, Conan sneaks into Hirota's apartment and attempts to stop her from meeting the assailants. Ignoring Conan's warning, Hirota heads to an empty warehouse and meets Gin who reveals her true identity to be Akemi Miyano. She asks him to release her sister in exchange for the 10 billion yen. Gin however murders her and takes the keys to a coin locker containing the money from the robbery. Akemi then reveals to Conan the existence of the Black Organization, and the location that she hid the stolen money before dying.

Initially, Gin is involved in the plot because he is to eliminate a traitor in the Organization. Later though, he finds out that Sherry was attending a party at the Twin Tower Buildings, the targeted location, and decides to kill two birds with one stone. He shoots at Sonoko, who got her hair permed and looks a lot like Sherry, but he realizes that it wasn't her after all after Conan gets Sonoko to dodge the bullet and she starts panicking in a very uncomposed manner. He leaves the towers in the end, looking forward to killing Sherry the next time he sees her.

In the beginning, during Conan's dream, Gin appears and is shown to know Conan's true identity. Later, in reality, Gin is looking for a memory card that contains information crucial to the Organization. His next appearance is during the climax of the movie. He, Vodka, Chianti, and Korn arrive at the top of Tokyo Tower in a black helicopter. Gin calls Irish and tells him to hold out the computer chip, then orders Chianti to kill Irish and destroy the chip in one shot. He spots someone (Conan) trying to hide and orders Vodka to start using the machine gun that was built into the helicopter. After Conan catapults the broken light into the back of the helicopter and Vodka is trying to get it back in control, he wonders who could have done so much damage to the Organization and leaves the scene.

The [[The Boss|boss]] trusts Gin enough to make him an executive agent in the organization, and for good reason: Gin is among the most loyal of the high-ranking BO members. Gin follows the boss' orders closely and virtually never acts against the Organization's greater interests, and in return the boss entrusts Gin to direct critical missions and key assassinations. The boss often issues orders to Gin directly by text message for him to disseminate to the others, and the two are implied to contact each other fairly often about instructions and suspicions. He has his boss ear which make him a made-man, anything he want to handling the operatings that against the interests of the organization, such as change the assasination plan from Domon to Kogoro, because his wanting to deal with Sherry and set up a lot of bombs in station containing police officers. For this reason the FBI thought Gin would be able to lead them to the boss if they captured him.

Gin is [[Vodka]]'s superior and they frequently work together, or are seen communicating with one another by phone. Gin comes from the [[Wikipedia: Gin|hard liquor]] which is known for its juniper berry flavor. It follows the Black Organization codename pattern of hard liquor codenames for men. The codename is probably also a pun on Gin's hair color. Gin pronounced with a hard "g" like "gun" in Japanese (ぎん ''Gin'') means "silver" (銀). This pun was used by a victim to implicate Gin as his killer in [[Countdown to Heaven]].

Gin's English name, Melkior, is the name of one of the Magi, or three kings, who visits the infant Jesus in Christian tradition. The name is Semitic and means 'king city.' Gin's English name was later switched to Gin to follow the Japanese.

== Background ==
Vermouth's background is very mysterious because she has been secretly living at least two lives through the art of disguise: that of actress Sharon Vineyard (now "deceased") and her supposed daughter, Chris Vineyard.

As the actress Sharon Vineyard, Vermouth gained much fame on Broadway and in movies, even winning an Oscar. Even then, she was a member of the Black Organization. Twenty years ago, she murdered [[Jodie Starling]]'s [[FBI]] father who had collected information on her. Jodie Starling would eventually grow up to be an FBI agent and one of Vermouth's most bitter enemies. As Sharon, Vermouth became close friends with [[Yukiko Kudo]] back when they were studying disguise under [[Toichi Kuroba]].

At some point Sharon began to pretend to have a daughter named Chris, who she did not got along with after she played a rude prank. That fact might have serve as a pretext to why the two 'identities' wouldn't be seen together in public. While Sharon was still alive, Chris kept out of the public eye except for acting in movies and giving interviews. Less than one year ago, Vermouth staged Sharon Vineyard's death, which allowed Chris to come out publicly. Currently, Vermouth serves the Black Organization with the public name Chris Vineyard.

Vermouth is the [[The Boss|boss]]' favorite which grants her some independence. Vermouth also has some particular connection to the boss that she does not want known by the greater organization, which [[Bourbon]] is blackmailing her with.<ref>Manga Volume 85, File 898: "Scarlet Epilogue"</ref> She also appears not to age or have de-aged over a period of twenty years between when she killed Jodie's parents and her current appearance. She doesn’t seem to like [[APTX 4869|the research]] that [[Shiho Miyano]] and [[Atsushi Miyano|her]] [[Elena Miyano|parents]] engaged in, calling it “foolish". <ref>[[Volume 42#File 434 - Rotten Apple|Volume 42, File 434: "Rotten Apple"]]</ref>

Vermouth entered the storyline some time after [[Ai Haibara|Shiho Miyano/Sherry/Ai Haibara]]'s mysterious flight from the Organization. Her main objective was to track down and eliminate the 'traitor', and for that purpose she assumed the identity of doctor [[Tomoaki Araide]]. But although she managed to discover Shiho's reversion into a child, she did not succeed in killing her, as she met [[Conan Edogawa]], who was able to discover and thwart her plans. She also encountered the FBI during this process.

Vermouth has great personal interest in Conan, constantly calling him "[[Silver Bullet]]". Since it has been revealed that she knows about Ai and Kudo's reversion to their child forms, she seems to know the shrinking effect the drug can have, but for reasons yet unrevealed she keeps this knowledge secret from the rest of the Organization.

== Personality ==
Although she follows orders from the boss and [[Gin]] when he is charge of missions, Vermouth often acts according to her own agenda and whims, even when it runs contrary to the [[Black Organization]]'s best interests. She is secretive and manipulative, even towards other Organization members. Vermouth is confident in her abilities, is very bold, and an expert at manipulating situations to her advantage: traits which allow her to single-handedly weave complex plots and take the upper hand even while she is being monitored by enemies. She is intelligent and insightful, correctly suspecting the allegiance of Kir, but she was successfully outwitted by [[Conan]] and forced by [[Shuichi Akai]] to retreat.

Vermouth's personality is contradictory at times. On one hand, she is a cruel and ruthless agent who will blackmail an unwilling man to commit murder by threatening him and his family just to provide a distraction and happily tell [[Jodie Starling|an FBI agent]] she should smile because she will see her dead father again in heaven. On the other hand, she risks her life several times to protect Conan (Cool Guy), [[Ran]] (Angel), and [[Kogoro]], and her friendly behavior while in disguise as Tomoaki Araide left the real Araide wondering if Vermouth is really a bad person. This inconsistency may reflect an underlying conflict of conscience after [[Shinichi]] (Cool Guy / Silver Bullet) and Ran (Angel) saved her life during the events of the [[Vermouth_timeline#Golden_Apple_Case_.28Manga:_350-354_Anime:_286-288.29|Golden Apple case]]. Vermouth also appears to be an atheist at first as she claims to not believe in God nor angels until Ran unknowingly rescued her which seemed to have given her back some faith.

At this point, Vermouth's motives are very mysterious. She knows about Conan being Shinichi, as well as that Haibara is Sherry, yet she has kept this information a secret from the rest of the Organization. She dislikes the Miyano family's research. She also retains personal feelings for persons who have earned a special place in her heart, such as Shinichi/Conan (Cool Guy) (as the son of [[Yukiko Kudo|her best friend]]) and [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] (Angel).<ref name="e288">[[Shinichi Kudo's New York Case|Episode 288: Shinichi Kudo's New York Case, Part 3]].</ref> As a result, she is highly unwilling to do them any harm even when she is ordered to do so.

While she does kill people, something suggests that she is not much into killing children. When Jodie, as a child, caught Vermouth, Vermouth didn't kill her directly but instead asked her to stay in the house, which she later set on fire. It could mean that she doesn't like to kill children directly. And when she questions a young witness, [[Toji Funemoto]], about Kir's accident, she lets him live.

Vermouth disguises as a brown haired policeman in a dark suit with glasses to check on [[Irish]]'s progress and the integrity of his disguise during the conference. After texting the boss outside the bathroom, she exits the building and leaves in [[Vehicles in Detective Conan#Gin's Porsche 356 A|Gin's Porsche 356 A]].

She is seen again disguising as a young brown-haired woman when trying to come closer to the believed serial killer but leaves as soon as she realizes he is not. [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] tracks her down in the underground parking lot and makes her reveal herself. She gives Conan essential information about an organization member named Irish and wishes him good luck when leaving.
It is later revealed that she was the one who supervised the captured [[Kiyonaga Matsumoto|Superintendent Matsumoto]] and provided him with comestibles. When the police finds out about Matsumoto's remains, she informs [[Gin]] about it and leaves.
Finally, she is briefly seen driving along the Highway when Gin's helicopter crashes, complimenting Conan's accomplishments and calling him again a "silver bullet".

In order to camouflage the fact that Sharon Vineyard and Chris Vineyard are the same person, Vermouth concocted personal histories for her real life cover roles in order to make them seem like different people. When Sharon and Chris Vineyard were revealed to be one and the same, at least part of the stated Vineyard family history was revealed to be a lie. The fall-out between mother and daughter probably serves as an excuse to why the two of them never are seen together. It is unknown how much of the remainder is truthful, based on the truth, or outright fabrication because the primary source of the information is Vermouth herself who may have more to hide.

Little is known of Sharon Vineyard's mother and father. Jodie's father in the FBI was secretly investigating Vermouth twenty years before the current storyline.<ref name="f433" /> That is too young for Chris Vineyard to be in disguise as she is only 29 currently and would be 9 at the time. After Vermouth killed Jodie's father she inadvertently handled Jodie’s father’s glasses barehanded which had fallen off of him and got her fingerprints on them. Unexpectedly, little Jodie came in and saw Vermouth holding the glasses. When Vermouth left after setting the house on fire, she didn't anticipate that Jodie left to get juice, taking her father’s glasses with her and thus preserving her fingerprint. After she discovered Jodie's corpse was not found in the house, Vermouth looked for the girl desperately in order to rectify her mistake, but Jodie had since been put into witness protection.

Jodie suspected Chris Vineyard of being Vermouth when she saw her at Sharon’s funeral. She somehow determined Chris Vineyard’s prints matched those of the glasses. Chris would have been too young to commit a crime 20 years ago, so later Jodie obtained Sharon’s fingerprints and matched those as well. All three matched, proving to Jodie that the three people were one and the same.

Conan first suspects there is another Black Organization member who was present at the mourning party after considering how Pisco obtained another purple handkerchief which enabled him to leave the investigation. Conan didn't realize that this Black Organization member might be after him or Haibara until after the bus jack case when Haibara tells Conan there was definitely someone from the Organization on the bus. Conan's idea that Pisco had an accomplice among the other suspects has fully solidified. He has noticed one of the suspects who had a purple handkerchief, [[Chris Vineyard]], hasn't appeared in public since that case, thus Conan believes Chris is the Black Organization accomplice. He asks [[Agasa]] to go onto Chris's fansite and gather information on her past, interests, and habits<ref name="f341p3">[[Volume 34#File 341 - The Hint That Was Against|Volume 34, File 341, page 3: "The Hint That Was Against"]]</ref> and Agasa's investigation corroborates with Conan's deduction.<ref name="f344p9" /> Conan is already aware that Chris Vineyard has disguise abilities and may be in disguise as someone around him.<ref name="f343p17" />

At this point, Conan is still uncertain of Araide, Jodie, and Shuichi's allegiances. He learns from [[Ran Mouri|Ran Mouri]] that Shuichi Akai was seen with a man in an [[Federal Bureau of Investigation|FBI]] jacket during the New York case, causing Conan to wonder if the FBI is in Japan for some reason or the Black Organization infiltrated the American law enforcement.<ref name="f380p5">[[Volume 37#File 380 - White Snow... By the time Conan gets the letter from Vermouth inviting him the off-season Halloween mystery party, he has realized that Vermouth is most likely Dr. Araide because Jodie wasn't in Mouri's case files when they were stolen, while Araide was. Vermouth needed the files to give proper testimony at the trial and to act correctly as Araide. Vermouth puts her plan to capture Haibara into action by calling Agasa's house as Dr. Araide saying he wants to take Haibara to a hospital because her cough hasn't gotten better.<ref name="f430p9">[[Volume 42#File 430 - The Haunted Ship Painted with Blood|Volume 42, File 430, page 9: "The Haunted Ship Painted with Blood"]]</ref> Conan is still unsure of Jodie's allegiance until she answers the door before Dr. Araide arrives. The murder was masterminded by Yoshiteru Araide's second wife, Yoko Araide. She caused a blackout to occur while she was supposedly on the phone, and during the ensuing darkness, snuck to the bathroom and put an electric shaver in the bathtub. She then crept back and asked the housemaid [[Hikaru Yasumoto]] to flip the circuit breaker, causing Yoshiteru Araide to be electrocuted. "Sleeping Kogoro", the police, and the criminal decided to create a false investigation record to protect the conscience of the maid Hikaru. At the same time Shinichi and Ran were in New York City, Vermouth disguised as a silver-haired serial killer in order to lure out [[Shuichi Akai]]. Later, Conan suspected the serial killer may have been someone in disguise when he heard that the serial killer’s blood and fingerprints on the stair rails were cleaned up, an action uncharacteristic for someone intending to commit suicide.<ref name=354p3>Manga [[Volume 35]], File 5 (354), pg 3: "Golden Apple 5". Note that Conan had not figured out everything completely at this point.</ref><ref>Manga [[Volume 37]], File 8 (380), pg 6: "White Snow... Black Shadow...". Conan is now convinced that the serial killer was killed. He had begun suspecting Shuichi Akai previously, and he still does at this point after Ran informs him Shuichi is an FBI agent, because Shuichi could be a spy in the FBI from the Black Organization.</ref> Sharon was the only person Conan knew about in the local area with high disguise abilities, so suspicion naturally fell onto her.

After Vermouth disguised as Araide, Conan deduced from the way Vermouth was behaving that she was trying to avoid involving Conan in her plan and was only targeting Haibara. Vermouth as Dr. Araide risked her life to protect Conan in the bus jack case and helped him out in Sato's matchup case. When Conan gets the letter from Vermouth inviting him the off-season Halloween mystery party, he realizes that Vermouth's intentions are to only trap Haibara and that Vermouth is trying to lure Conan to the party to avoid catching him up in her plan.

Conan who didn't exist a year ago has no reason to be “protected” by Vermouth. Conan deduces Vermouth must know his identity as Shinichi and the reason for her “protection” must have to do with something he did as Shinichi. However, Sharon was the only one Shinichi had a connection with, and she is apparently dead. Sharon’s daughter Chris has never met Shinichi and is estranged from Sharon Vineyard so she alone doesn't have an adequate motive to protect Shinichi. Also, it wouldn’t make sense for Chris Vineyard, who isn’t a family friend like Sharon, to be able to recognize Shinichi as Conan; presumably Vermouth saw young Shinichi with Yukiko when she was Sharon.<ref>Manga [[Volume 42]], File 10, pg 5</ref>

All these clues come together when Conan makes the assumption that Sharon Vineyard is Chris Vineyard who disguised as the silver haired serial killer in New York and that she is grateful for being rescued by [[Shinichi]] (Cool Guy / Silver Bullet) and [[Ran]] (Angel).<ref name="f429p9">[[Volume 42#File 429 - The Full Moon and the Trap at the Banquet|Volume 42, File 429, page 9: "The Full Moon and the Trap at the Banquet"]]. Vermouth's age is unknown because her history is largely unclear. We know she has lived as Chris who is 29, and as Sharon whose age is unknown. Her face when she killed Jodie's father 20 years ago was youthful, suggesting she is currently at least 40 years old as long as no deaging has occurred...

On the train, when she was talking to Yukiko, Yukiko brought up whatever is used to keep your youthful appearance. She mentiioned about painful that it did not effect the rest of her body, however she sure does not move around like a person in their 40s, and let alone older.

=== Vermouth did not use APTX 4869 ===
A popular theory on Vermouth's non-aging is that she used [[APTX 4869]] to achieve her youthfulness since this is the only known substance capable of producing such an effect ([[Silver Bullet]]'s effects are unknown at this point). However, at present there are things that contradict such a notion. Furthermore, if Shiho had reported to the Organization that APTX 4869 had the possibility of leaving the victim alive, the boss and/or Shiho's superiors would not have permitted the drug in situations where the victim, if surviving, could escape as in Shinichi's case.</ref> and it was considered deadly enough that Sherry's superiors employed it as an untraceable murder weapon.<ref name=V2>Gin described APTX 4869 as a poison before using it on Shinichi, "We'll use this, the new poison the Organization developed. You can't find any signs of poison on the body with this stuff..." (V1-1 pg 37) Haibara also mentions that it was used on a number of other people, "Of all the people who took the drug, only your death hadn't been confirmed yet." (V18-9 pg 6 The Org took great pains to ensure the people APTX4869 was used on were dead, evidenced when they sent Shiho out to investigate Shinichi's case twice to confirm his death. (V18-9 pg 6) Additionally, Gin gave the OK for it to be employed in a time sensitive assassination where failure would be unacceptable: "Anyway, our superior has ordered us to kill him before he rats us out. Don't screw up, Pisco! If there is any complication, you can use the 'experimental drug' [APTX 4869]" (V24-7 pg 17) If the boss, who has been stated to be cautious to a fault, knew about the risk that someone might survive APTX 4869, he would not let his subordinates use the drug without letting them know there was a chance it would leave people alive because, if someone escaped, they could talk to the police or someone else and leak the secret of the Black Organization's existence. If Gin knew it failed to work some of the time, he would have never left Shinichi alone while it acted, and would have also gone looking for him after his body disappeared if that was the case. Even Shiho Miyano who was aware APTX 4869 could rarely cause de-aging expected it to kill her. "I thought that since I was going to get killed anyways, I would take the APTX 4869 which I secretly held. To my luck, the drug that I took thinking it would kill me shrunk by body..." (V18-9 pg 8) Finally, Shiho makes it clear the Organization is not simply trying APTX 4869 out on victims, they are actively using it to kill. "If I reported your condition to the Organization, it's very likely you would have been terminated before I could do something useful." (V18-9 pg 7) Even though Shinichi was an "interesting specimen" (V18-9 pg 7), if the Org was field testing, they would try to capture Shinichi alive for study. Shiho was still project manager when use on humans began and when Shinichi was poisoned, so she would know the Organization's protocol should someone fail to die.</ref> However, given that Vermouth has said depressing things over the course of the series,<ref>"No angel has smiled upon me", "My life represents a series of misfortunes" (V35-1 pg 2)</ref> it is possible Vermouth took APTX 4869 hoping to commit suicide, but she de-aged instead, similar to Haibara's situation<ref>"I thought that since I was going to get killed anyways, I would take the APTX 4869 which I secretly held. To my luck, the drug that I took thinking it would kill me shrunk by body..." (V18-9 pg 8)</ref>. Vermouth could have also gambled on taking APTX 4869 after she recognized the deaged Shiho and Shinichi and then discovered that APTX 4869 was the common connection between them and likely cause of their conditions. However, both the suicide scenario (if it occurred while Shiho was working on the drug) and the gambling scenario fail to explain why no one in the Black Organization has questioned why Vermouth has become younger, especially after Gin saw her true face following the Haunted Ship case<ref>Shuichi's shotgun fire struck Vermouth's face and wounded it which made it apparent she wasn't wearing a mask and thus that was her true face. Vermouth was picked up by Gin in a telephone booth and he would have noticed her facial injury as well.</ref>, and then connected that with APTX 4869 use and Sherry's mysterious escape from the handcuffs and locked room. 
It is possible that Atsushi and Elena Miyano had something to do with Vermouth's de-aging/non-aging (e.g. Vermouth was their guinea pig). This might explain the personal animosity Vermouth feels towards the Miyanos and why she calls their APTX experiment foolish.

Vermouth's de-aging/non-aging may be a result of a project older than Shiho's APTX 4869, like her parents' [[Silver Bullet]], or something else even older than that. This would explain why none of the other members of the Black Organization suspect that APTX 4869 can also cause this effect and thus are unaware of the possibility Shiho de-aged to escape.

Another possibility, could be if she ever administered the APTX 4869 orally, as in she hides it in her mouth, and transfers it to her intended target, as in Mary Sera's case, the de-aging effect may had kept her young, while it may kill or make young the target.

After all, she did state her skin care regiment for retaining her youthful glow to Yukiko in [[The Jet-Black Mystery Train]] painfully does not affect the entire body, which hints that it mostly affects the face, and other external appearances.

Yukiko had no idea Sharon was leading a double life as an operative in the Black Organization. Yukiko and Sharon seemed to have kept in contact with one another because Yukiko and Sharon both know about events in each others' lives that occurred after Toichi's lessons. Sharon was the one who got tickets for Yukiko, Shinichi, and Ran to the Golden Apple play on Broadway in New York City one year prior to the current time line. Yukiko attended Sharon's funeral. Later, Yukiko sadly accepts Conan's deduction that Sharon and Chris are the same person and a member of the Black Organization. Vermouth once left Yukiko safe and sound during their confrontation in the Bell Tree Express, implying her soft spot for Shinichi and Yukiko.

They get along well enough on missions, but Gin does not like Vermouth's habit of keeping secrets or her teasing. Before the events of the showdown on the ghost ship, Vermouth and Gin trusted one another, but some of Gin's trust may have disappeared as Vermouth failed to inform even the boss of her intentions.<ref name="CD239b">Conan Drill page 239, "同僚・信頼" (Colleagues Trusted)</ref> Gin doesn't mind threatening her with bodily harm, he nearly stabbed her through the head with an icepick on one occasion when she teased him disguised as a waiter, and he later pointed his gun at her when asking how she was connected with Kogoro. She doesn't seem especially bothered by any of these threats however. Because Vermouth is a high ranking member and the boss's favorite, she isn't scared of provoking the other agents, not even Gin who is extremely dangerous and sensitive. She smiled after moving her head to avoid Gin's deadly sweep with an icepick telling him that "She was just joking" which shows that she enjoys teasing him. Shiho fears Vermouth more than most other members except perhaps Gin. Shiho was Vermouth's target, but Vermouth gave up on her after Conan's intervention. During the '[[The Jet-Black Mystery Train|Bell Tree Express arc]]', Vermouth tries to use C4 explosives to kill Sherry without telling anyone about the plan, while Bourbon wanted to take her back alive hinting at an abnormal hatred towards her. She also interfered with his plans to capture Sherry alive by rigging the location Rei intended to trap Sherry in with explosives to kill her,and it probably had nothing to do with her being aware that Gin and Vodka probably placed a ton of explosives at the destination platform, which would have caused the entire train, and everyone on it, including her and Boubon, to blow up as well.

==== Rum ====
The relationship between the Boss' Favorite and the Boss' Close Aide is somewhat unknown, although Vermouth was once seen taking orders from syndicate's Second-In-Command. Vermouth was tasked to investigate Yusaku Kudo, an individual whom Rum considers a threat to the Black Organisation in Yusaku Kudo's TV Show Case.

Suguru Itakura suspected that Vermouth and Tequila were in cahoots when both individuals demanded him to finish a particular program that the Black Organization was interested in.

Throughout the series, Vermouth has not been shown as having any negative emotions regarding [[Vodka]], unlike other members of the Organization (like [[Chianti]] and [[Korn]]). Vermouth was extremely well liked and kind to students and patients while disguised as [[Tomoaki Araide]], so when the real Araide wonders if Vermouth is really a bad person, Jodie takes offense and angrily yells at him, "How can someone be a good person if she kills people with a smile!?"<ref>Manga Volume 45, File 2, pg 18: "The truth behind the remaining desk"</ref>

Twenty years before the current timeline, Vermouth goes to the house of Jodie's father, an FBI agent, and kills him. An eight to nine year old [[Jodie Starling]] walks in while Vermouth was trying to put his glasses back on his body and thinks her father is asleep. Vermouth tells her that she should wait for her father to wake up. When the girl asks her who is she, Vermouth replies "A secret makes a woman, woman". Vermouth burns the house down, thinking Jodie stayed behind and was killed as well. However, the girl goes out of the house to buy orange juice for her father, narrowly escaping death. She also takes her father's glasses with her, preserving the fingerprints Vermouth left on them. When Vermouth finds out Jodie's body was not in the house, she looks for her to kill her, but the FBI enrolled her in witness protection. Jodie later becomes an FBI agent in order to find her father's killer.

==== Shuichi Akai ====
Vermouth and [[Shuichi Akai|Shuichi]] don't have much personal animosity for each other in particular despite the fact that they have been hunting one another for some time. Vermouth regards Shuichi as a "silver bullet": someone with the potential to destroy the Black Organization. In accordance with this assessment, she attacks him immediately and preferentially in the confrontation with her at the docks. Shuichi seems to hit a nerve when he called her a rotten apple, wilted on the inside.

She suspects that [[Hidemi Hondou|Kir]] is a member of the CIA though she hasn't told anyone about it.

After [[Shinichi Kudo|Shinichi]] helped Ran save Vermouth's life in New York while she was disguised as a serial killer, she nicknames him "Cool guy".

Later in the series, after [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] successfully interfered with Vermouth's plan of killing [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]], then almost forced her to surrender and take him to find the boss, she gives him another nickname - "Silver bullet" - as she believes that he has the potential to destroy the Black Organization, because he could touch her heart.

Generally, Vermouth tries to protect Shinichi when she is able to, even if it means risking her own life. Although Shinichi found out later that he unknowingly rescued Vermouth in New York City and that Vermouth was a friend of [[Yukiko Kudo|Yukiko's]], Shinichi doesn't understand why Vermouth would make the promise to give up on hunting Sherry and not inform the [[Black Organization]] about Haibara and himself.

Because of this, Conan does not react strongly when she is mentioned, as opposed to [[Haibara]]. He also seems to consider her less of a threat than the other members because he is able to bargain with her about Haibara and knows Vermouth is keeping his secret for personal reasons.

In [[Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization: A Dual Mystery on a Full Moon Night|Head-to Head]], After Conan removed his Haibara mask, he was distracted, when Haibara showed up on the scene, which gave Vermouth the needed opening to use his stun gun wrist watch on him, to place him to sleep, before gently sitting him down beside the car, so he does not get hurt in the fall.

She also destroyed the box that he was connected to by many wires, so as not to possibly accidentally kill or hurt him, which pulling out the wires would have, according to Conan.

After she used sleeping gas, in order to knock him back out, so that she can escape, and not lead the Black Organization members to him.

She even covered the sleeping boy up with her coat, so that he would not get sick, since she had literally cut his shirt wide open, in order to see the wires and connected box, which may have made him sick, if he is not found right away, since it is pretty cold, and colds are spreading at this time.

She shot herself in the leg, and had to hobble some distance away from the car, so that he would remain out of sight, and no where around her, when Gin came to pick her up.

In [[the Raven Chaser]], she even provided Conan with the name of [[Irish]], and gave him a little bit of information of why the Organization is interested in this serial murder case.

In [[Black Impact! The Moment the Black Organization Reaches Out|Black Impact]], when she was speaking on the cell phone to [[Gin]], she mentioned hearing noise, and then she thought that Conan may have had something to do with the noise coming from Gin's car, and when Gin asked about what noise, she quickly "Never mind. It is nothing," in order to protect Conan.

==== Ran Mouri ====
After Ran saved Vermouth's life in New York City, Vermouth nicknames [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] "Angel". Earlier, Vermouth, as her Sharon Vineyard role, complained that her life was a series of misfortunes and, "No angel has smiled upon me, not even once."<ref name="f350p18" /> Even though Vermouth in disguise prepared to kill Ran later, Ran stopped Vermouth from taking a fatal fall. Vermouth was touched by this act of kindness. Much later in the story when Ran shielded Haibara from gunfire with her body, Vermouth refused to shoot Ran or allow her to be shot, instead firing around her in an attempt to frighten Ran into releasing Haibara. Although Ran does not know who Vermouth really is, she values the handkerchief that Sharon Vineyard gave her back in New York. She also describes her as "one of only two treasures in her life" (the other being Shinichi Kudo) when Ran asked her if she was or wasn't Azusa Enomoto.

====Tomoaki Araide====
Vermouth originally intended to kill Araide and take his place to approach Conan and Haibara more closely. Anticipating this development, the FBI faked his death and Vermouth took his place as expected, giving the FBI an opportunity to investigate Vermouth in close proximity.
While disguised as Tomoaki Araide, Vermouth was extremely well liked and kind to the students and patients. This fact made the real Araide wonder if Vermouth is really a bad person<ref> Teitan High School's Ghost Story</ref>.

====Suguru Itakura====
Vermouth's Target. Sharon and Itakura worked before in movies containing visual effects and the two were known for their constant quarelling. Although Itakura seems to be unaware of Sharon's persona as Vermouth, he follows her orders anyway and partially completed the program that the Black Organization was interested in.

====Yusaku Kudo====
Sharon and Yusaku were probably acquainted through Yukiko Kudo, a friend of Sharon's and Yusaku's wife. Vermouth once investigated him after being tasked by Rum to monitor the individual, considering him a threat to the Black Organization. However, Yusaku saw through the syndicate's ploy and tricked Vermouth into thinking that they are just staying for vacation.
Since Yusaku is Shinichi's Father, it is unclear if Vermouth really meant to kill him when she stated on planning to eliminate the "person of interest" when necessary.

Vermouth once stole Kogoro's files from the police to successfully testify as Tomoaki Araide in court and later returned them in one piece.
Since Kogoro is Ran's Father, Vermouth tried to protect him from being killed by Gin after he was suspected on planting a bug on Kir's shoe, implying her consideration for Ran's feelings and welfare.

* The FBI's nickname for Vermouth, Rotten Apple, could also refer to "fermenting apples", which are known to produce alcohol.
* Half of Vermouth's disguises contain glasses, seen in her role of [[Sharon Vineyard]], [[Tomoaki Araide]], [[Jodie Starling]], a policeman, an unknown woman and a simple disguise.
