The day after the Kaitou Kid makes his return after an eight-year hiatus, Kaito stumbles through a trap door in his room and discovers that his father, [[Toichi Kuroba]], was the original Kaitou Kid. Kaito dons his father's costume to discover the identity of the new Kaitou Kid, revealed to be his father's old assistant [[Konosuke Jii]]. Jii tells Kaito that Toichi had been murdered eight years ago, and that he had dressed as the Kid and staged the heist in order to lure Toichi's killers.<br />

In the manga, Kid and [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] are rivals. Ever since Kaito met Conan, Kaito always seems to be anticipating Conan's appearance at his heists. Conan makes the heists more interesting for Kaito, while Conan views Kaito's heists as entertainment.<br />

To Shuichi's surprise, Akemi doesn't seemed surprised by this, so Shuichi asks her why she never said anything about her suspicions that she was being used by him before, and Akemi hints it is because she loves him. Initially, the Organization couldn't do anything about Akemi because they needed the loyalty of her sister, but two years later they decided that the risk of her contact with Shuichi was too much. They decided to create a situation where they could eliminate her by having her do a bank heist she was supposed to fail. Sometime near the day of the heist, Akemi sent Shuichi a long text message, asking him if he wants to be her real boyfriend when she is finally free from the Organization. After the heist, Akemi is killed by [[Gin]], and it is unknown how Shuichi responded if at all. Shuichi treasures her final text message, and keeps it in his phone many months after Akemi's death.<br />

She was educated overseas in America before returning to Japan at or before she was 13. She became a high ranking member, codenamed Sherry, in the Black Organization's internal drug development division.<ref>Conan Drill page 237</ref> When she was about 13,<ref>Five years before present timeline</ref> undercover [[FBI]] agent [[Shuichi Akai]] began dating Shiho's sister [[Akemi Miyano]] in order to use Shiho's rank to his advantage while infiltrating the Black Organization. <br />

Exasperated, the Black Organization came up with a trap for Akemi; they told her that she could leave the Black Organization with Shiho if she would rob 10 billion yen from a bank for them. The Black Organization expected Akemi to fail, which would give them the excuse to eliminate her while keeping Shiho loyal; however Akemi, with a team of robbers, succeeded in obtaining the money.<br />

Without telling Shiho about the robbery, Akemi redirected the conversation to [[Conan Edogawa]], whom Akemi said was brilliant and had the composure of an adult. This conversation likely helped Shiho deduce Conan's identity as the missing Shinichi.<br />

Gin calls an agent named [[Pisco]] and discusses part of a plan to kill someone at a mourning party that will take place at the [[Haido City Hotel]]. Gin tells Pisco he can use the [[APTX 4869|"experimental detective"]] if needed. Gin then finds the tracker and destroys it, believing Sherry placed it there because he also found a single red hair that Haibara inadvertently lost while Conan was planting the bugs. Gin then warns Pisco about Sherry. Although initially reluctant, after hearing Pisco has APTX, Haibara decides to go to the party to try to obtain a sample. Pisco, who knew Shiho as a child, recognizes her as Haibara, kidnaps her using chloroform, and confines her in a wine storage room in another part of the hotel. He doesn't get the opportunity to tell anyone about his discovery because the police are rounding up suspects for the mourning party murder and he is one of them.<br />

The murderer bars the door and sets the cabin alight with the children inside. The strength of the children is not enough to open the door and Ayumi passes out from the smoke. With Conan nowhere nearby, Haibara takes a temporary [[Antidote (Prototype)|antidote]], borrows the victim's clothing, and uses the murder weapon - an axe - to break down the door. Mitsuhiko, not realizing who she is, films her carrying Ayumi from the burning cabin and mails the video to Kogoro hoping he would find their savior. Bourbon logs into Kogoro's computer and sees the video, precipitating the events on the Bell Tree Express.<br />

Shiho's English mother, [[Elena Miyano]], and Japanese father, [[Atsushi Miyano]], were both important researchers for the Black Organization. They both died in what other members of the Black Organization described as an accident while Shiho was very young. <br />

She was educated overseas in America before returning to Japan at or before she was 13. She became a high ranking member, codenamed Sherry, in the Black Organization's internal drug development division.<ref>Conan Drill page 237</ref> When she was about 13,<ref>Five years before present timeline</ref> undercover [[FBI]] agent [[Shuichi Akai]] began dating Shiho's sister [[Akemi Miyano]] in order to use Shiho's rank to his advantage while infiltrating the Black Organization. <br />

Mitsuhiko, not realizing who she is, films her carrying Ayumi from the burning cabin and mails the video to Kogoro hoping he would find their savior. In the manga version of the story [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]] are the masterminds of the case (rather than Okita), and they end up killing [[Akemi Miyano|Masami Hirota/Akemi Miyano]] who informs Conan of the organization's existence and that they dress in black. Her death is the motive of [[Shiho Miyano]]'s defection which leads to [[Ai Haibara|Ai Haibara's]] appearance later in the series. Furthermore, Shiho makes a silhouetted appearance when Akemi is demanding for herself and her sister to be free of the organization, which is also omitted. To repair the storyline, Episode 128 [[The Black Organization: One Billion Yen Robbery Case]] was written with a similar ending to the manga version.<br />

Using Kogoro, Conan reveals that the name left by Anzai is Taeko, and reveals '''Taeko Mamegaki''' to be the murderer. He reveals when Taeko killed Anzai, she did not notice the dying message. When her fiancé, Yuji, was searching for her, he spots the message and changed it to frame Shingo. The person who knocked out Murasawa in the piano room was '''Kazuaki Hirata'''. The bandage on his left hand was the result of smashing the window when he was trying to escape. He was also the one that Kogoro and Conan chased outside the piano room. The piano room was his meeting place with Kawashima when doing business: dealing drugs. He was using the piano's secret compartment as a hiding place for cocaine he got from overseas to which he exchanged later for large sums of money. The reason why he was always talking about the cursed piano was because he wanted to keep everyone in the town away from it. Murasawa saw the drugs that he had left in there earlier so he hit him. Still, he was unrelated to the murders because he wouldn't have related the piano to the crimes.<br />

In the second murder, they found that he had been dead for only a few minutes but when Conan fell on the code of blood, it didn't smear when it takes 25-30 minutes for human blood to dry. It was just a trick that the killer used to manipulate the time of death of the victim. Upon looking at the pictures, there was a button that was lighted near Kuroiwa's neck. But after the body was moved, the light was turned off. This was actually the reverse button. While the police weren't looking, the killer turned off the light. The killer used the reverse side (the blank side that didn't have the song), which played for over 30 min and then it reversed. That was when the 5 minutes and 30 seconds of gap played before the music started.<br />

In the third murder, the killer didn't have the time to put a chair or desk at Nishimoto's feet because he had to escape in time. The killer was probably male because the murders required a lot of physical strength.<br />

The purpose of drowning Kawashima was to send the forensic examiner back to Tokyo, because it was impossible to do an autopsy on the island. The tape in the second murder was a setup so the killer could create an alibi. <br />

Conan deduced that the killer was '''Narumi Asai''' and that she was, in fact, Asoh's aforementioned son, '''Seiji Asoh'''. Asai was probably the surname of the family that adopted him. After graduation, he came to the island as a female doctor. The pronunciation of his name was not written on his diploma, nor the medical license, because if they checked his history, they would have found out that he was a man: the kanji forming Asoh's name could be read as either "Seiji" (a male-only name) or "Narumi" (a female-only name): coupled with Asoh's feminine features and rather girlish voice, it let him masquerade as a female doctor rather well, plus falsifying the times of death and manipulating the crime scenes. He also stayed all night so that they'd make him last for questioning, keeping the "disguise" intact. <br />

As for Murasawa, he was an admirer of the late Asoh and he was the one who kept the donated piano in tune just like that night.<br />

As Conan-through-Kogoro explained all of this, suddenly the police came in and said that Seiji/Narumi had escaped. While they were looking for him, the community center building suddenly went up in flames: it turns out Seiji, who had realized that he had been found out, locked himself inside and set it on fire, intending to die like his father... <br />

Conan, carrying Asoh's last music sheets with his message for the then-young Seiji, managed to slip in and told Seiji, who was sitting at the piano, to keep on living. Seiji confirmed that he was the young boy who escaped his family's murder, plus everything that Conan-through-Kogoro had already said (explained below in "Motive"). When Seiji was done, Conan insisted that he should escape and live; Seiji refused, however, saying that he was already too bloodstained. Then, he grabbed Conan and threw him through the window, saving his life. Afterwards, he played one last music code message in the burning flames: "Thank you, little detective." <br />

Conan notices that some of the words are dry while others are wet, revealing the dry message to spell Shingo, the name of one of the actors. Shingo reveals he changed the message to avoid being suspected of murdering Anzai. Conan discovers the name was altered to frame Shingo and that the real name is under Shingo. Using Kogoro, Conan reveals that the name left by Anzai is Taeko, and reveals '''Taeko Mamegaki''' to be the murderer. He reveals when Taeko killed Anzai, she did not notice the dying message. When her fiancé, Yuji, was searching for her, he spots the message and changed it to frame Shingo. Taeko confesses and revealed that she murdered Anzai because he blackmailed her about her past where she indirectly caused the robbery of her grandfather's shrine and causing the shrine's supervisor, Sugiyama to suicide.<br />

Conan notices that some of the words are dry while others are wet, revealing the dry message to spell Shingo, the name of one of the actors. Shingo reveals he changed the message to avoid being suspected of murdering Anzai. Conan discovers the name was altered to frame Shingo and that the real name is under Shingo. Using Kogoro, Conan reveals that the name left by Anzai is Taeko, and reveals '''Taeko Mamegaki''' to be the murderer. He reveals when Taeko killed Anzai, she did not notice the dying message. When her fiancé, Yuji, was searching for her, he spots the message and changed it to frame Shingo. Taeko confesses and revealed that she murdered Anzai because he blackmailed her about her past where she indirectly caused the robbery of her grandfather's shrine and causing the shrine's supervisor, Sugiyama to suicide.<br />
