Three game designers arrive at Kogoro's agency to ask for his assistance to look for their game system engineer, Suguru Itakura. He was last heard in a video mail which shows him in a hotel with an Igo, Shogi, and Chess set. One of the game producers believe that a mysterious man may be the cause of Itakura's disappearance; Conan realizes from his description the man is Tequila from the Black Organization. Kogoro decides to call hotels and ask them if anyone rented a Shogi, Chess, and Igo set at once. After learning of Itakura's hotel and room number, they enter the apartment only to find out Itakura had died of a stroke.

The police's investigation reveals that Itakura's body was tied up before his death; This means someone tied him up to prevent him from being able to take his medicine which would have prevented the stroke. Further investigation reveals that someone other then Kogoro also phoned the hotel asking for a person with a Shogi, Chess, and Igo set; Since the three producers are the only ones who knew Itakura had those three sets and was staying in a hotel, this makes them the prime suspects for murder.

The three designers are: Katsumichi Sugai, Igo board game designer; Ryusuke Soma, Shogi board game designer; and Johei Naito, a chess game designer. While the police investigate, Conan attempts to steal a floppy disk containing Itakura's diary so he could investigate the Black Organization but to no avail. A forensic officer reveals that the body is missing a sock impression on the right ankle, this causes Conan to realize who the murderer is.

After tranquilizing Kogoro, Conan impersonates Kogoro and tricks Megure into copying Itakura's diary onto another floppy disk. He then afterward reveals that Itakura, while tied up, used his feet and moved the pieces on the Igo board to reveal who the murderer is. When the white pieces are ignored, the black pieces represent kanji characters in Braille and ultimately reveals that '''Ryusuke Soma''' is the culprit. As proof, Conan reveals that Itakura made the message on an Igo board since Soma is unfamiliar with Braille and would not recognize the strange patterns on the Igo board since he is not familiar with the game. As evidence, Conan reveals that there should be Itakura's fingerprints on Soma's watch. Soma confesses and reveals that he was angered that he invested twenty years worth of money and time into Itakura to build him a Shogi program, yet had made no development throughout the years. Later that day, Conan and Ran are grocery shopping when they run into Shuichi Akai.

[[Miwako Sato]] reminisces about the bomber case three years ago. Three years ago, a bomber sent a fax to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police containing the location of a bomb in the form of a riddle. [[Jinpei Matsuda]] discovers the bomb's location and realizes that the bomb contains a clue to an even larger bomb and that the clue is only revealed during the last three seconds before detonation; Matsuda sacrifices his life and allowed the police to locate the second bomb. In the present time, the bomber returns and sends a fax to the Police station.

The [[Detective Boys]] along with [[Wataru Takagi]] and Sato attempt to decrypt the riddle and locate the bomb. An explosion occurs at Tokyo Tower and a girl becomes stranded in an elevator. Takagi and Conan free her but become trapped in the elevator themselves due to a second explosion. [[Conan Edogawa]] finds a bomb in the elevator and begins to disarm it until a message appears revealing that a clue to a second bomb will appear in the last three seconds before detonation.

Conan deduces the code and disarms the bomb with one second remaining and reveals that the code refers to the English word "Detective" and when flipped around in its kanji form, says Teitan, the name of the school. The bomb at Teitan High is disarmed and the bomber is captured. When the bomber tries to set it off, he realizes it has already been defused. When he is cornered by the police, he attempts to escape, but Sato chases him and corners him, attempting to take revenge for killing Matsuda. Takagi comes just at time to prevent Sato from doing so and brings her back to her senses. As they attempt to kiss, Megure breaks it up and the case ends with the bomber being arrested.

Ran loses consciousness due to her illness and reminisces about her past with Shinichi in New York. Shinichi's mother, Yukiko Kudo, takes the two to view The Golden Apple musical at Broadway. When they arrive, they are introduced to a famous actress named Sharon Vineyard, and the five performers that will be performing the musical. They learn from them that an unknown culprit had sent the performers a Golden Apple with the words "For the Fairest" written on it and presume it is a threat. While touring the theater, a medieval suit of armour is sent flying towards the group. An actress is about to be hit with the armor until Ran pushes her out of the way.

The performance of The Golden Apple begins. During the climax of the musical, the actor Heath Flockheart, who is portraying Paris, is shot.

The police arrive and come to the conclusion an unknown assailant rented out all the terraces in the theater and that they shot Heath from there. Shinichi reveals that he found a bullet in one of the terraces shortly after the murder but is was cold meaning it was set up to create the idea an audience murdered Heath. He also reveals that the falling suit if the armor from before was set up by a tripwire deduces that the murderer is one of the four actresses whom all have shared a romantic relationship with Heath. Lila, Akane, and Rose are Heath's lovers and Iblis was Heath's wife. While Shinichi investigates to find out how the murder was done, he notices a crack in the mirror prop and realizes who the murderer is.

The police are still suspecting the people who are close to Flockheart at the crime scene. They checked their bodies for gunpowder but still nothing. They confirmed it was an outsider. Suddenly, the lights went off.

Shinichi tells his mother his deductions on the case to have her solve the murder. It is revealed that since the mirror was damaged, the employees of the theater fixed the mirror causing it to become shorter. Since the mirror was too low to conceal Heath during the musical, they decided to add a revolving trap door on the stage. It is then revealed besides Heath, the actress '''Rose Hewitt''' was informed of the trap door as it was her job to close the trap door when Heath is carried by wires out of it. Yukiko declares Rose to be the murderer revealing that during the time the stage was covered in the fog, Rose shot Heath through an opening between the mirror and the floor as he was rising out of the trap door. Rose then placed the gun on Heath to create the suspicion the true suspect threw the gun on stage from the terrace. As evidence, Shinichi reveals Heath grabbed onto Rose with his blood soaked hands which was found on the inside of her glove.

Shinichi and Ran take a taxi to the hotel but stop in an alleyway when Ran's handkerchief flies out the window and onto a fire escape. Shinichi leaves to retrieve it and Ran meets a mysterious FBI agent who orders her to leave as the serial killer they are searching for is nearby. Ran searches for Shinichi and finds the serial killer on the fire escape. The man prepares to shoot Ran but when the fire escape railing breaks off, he loses his balance but is saved by Ran and Shinichi. Despite the rescue, the man decides to kill them but Shinichi warns him to stop, since the silencer of the gun he kept in his hand has fallen down from the fire escape. Ran collapses from her illness and Shinichi leaves with her, declaring to the man that he will capture him the next time they meet.

The next day, Yukiko receives a call from Sharon who asks her to tell Ran an angel is watching over her also. Ran awakens from her illness in the present time and phones Shinichi to talk about their time in New York. Shinichi reveals that the serial killer was found dead by the police shortly after their encounter. The police believes that he committed suicide, but Shinichi deduces that he was murdered.

Because of the rearrangement on the airing order, in the anime version, the ending part of this case is included with the scene of Conan (using Shinichi's voice) discussing with Ran about the events back in New York, which should have been the beginning of [[The Truth of the Haunted House]] in the original manga series where it takes place right after this case.

== Remastered version ==
On October 27, 2008, a remastered version of the case was aired. All three episodes were edited and combined into one hour long special, and scenes were edited out to fit the timeslot. However, exclusive to the remastering new scenes were added to this version. In the beginning, Ran is watching television and sees a reporter talking about New York City, which brings her back to remembering the case from back then. Conan is, for some reason, holding apples, and drops them on the floor. One of those apples turns into a golden apple, and a picture of both Conan and Shinichi is visible.

[[Conan]] and [[Haibara]] have an interesting relationship. Initially, Conan scorned Haibara for being part of the Black Organization and the inventor of murderous [[APTX 4869]], but he has since warmed up to her as a valuable teammate and someone to confide his true thoughts with when they conflict with his child cover. On her part, Haibara expresses a lot of interest in Conan's personality, intelligence, and sense of justice. This has led to the theory that Haibara is in love with Conan.

In Episode 223, it is revealed that Conan knows Haibara's true name, [[Shiho Miyano]], but he never calls her that, despite her calling him "Kudo-kun".

It is shown in several manga chapters and anime episodes that Haibara gives hints about liking Conan. However, whenever Conan asks her about it, she always claims to be joking. Fans think she is trying to hide her pain on the fact that he loves [[Ran Mouri|Ran]]. Conan watches out for Haibara's safety and tries to protect and save Haibara if anything happens to her. He also worries about her mental condition when the Black Organization is involved. [[Yukiko Kudo]] and [[Jodie Starling]] sense that Haibara might have strong romantic feelings for Conan.

Shocking Conan, the only thing he can manage to say is: "Yeah..."

* After class is over, the Detective Boys try to catch up with Haibara in the hallway, wanting to ask her to walk home with them. Haibara ignores all of Ayumi's attempts to talk to her until she inquires about her address, to which she replies: "22 Beika Block, Second Street." Conan regards the address as familiar and remarks to himself that her house can't be too far away from where his is. Haibara then looks over her shoulder and smirks at him, again shocking Conan and causing a small blush to appear right above his nose. Genta notices and asks him if he "likes that stuck-up woman". Which Conan quickly denies.

* When Ayumi and Mitsuhiko are telling Haibara about the Detective Boys, she asks, "Edogawa-kun is in it too?". Shortly after, the Detective Boys come across a case, where a fellow classmate's older brother has been missing and wants to find him.

* After solving said case, and Ai fires a gun through a window, causing her to get a scolding from Inspector Megure, and starts fake-crying (impressively well) to get out of it. Conan walks Haibara back home to her house, while she is still crying. When Conan drops her off nearby her home, Haibara immediately stops crying and then starts talking about a drug called "APTX 4869". Conan is confused, as Haibara continues to ramble about the drug, how he took it, and how she did too. It is apparent that Haibara isn't just your average little girl. It is not until Haibara tells Conan that she's occupied Professor Agasa's house and that he's "not in this world anymore", that Conan begins to freak out. He tries to call Professor Agasa but does not get an answer, while Haibara smirks evilly in the background (she's got the upper hand, at the moment). Conan then leaves Haibara behind and sprints to Professor Agasa's house, hoping to find him safe.

* Later on, Conan, Haibara, and Agasa come across another case. One involving the locked-room-murder of a university professor. After Conan solves the case, Agasa and Conan decide to head back home. When Conan gestures for Haibara to come along, we see a tear roll down her face as she asks why he didn't help her sister. To answer a confused Conan's face, Haibara explains (still in tears) that Hirota Misami was a fake name her sister took from the now-deceased university professor, and Conan realizes that the same girl (from the previous episode) who died during the one-billion-yen robbery case. Haibara continues to shout at a stunned Conan, with all his deducing skills, he should have been able to see right through her sister's case. Haibara breaks down and falls on her knees in front of Conan and clutches his shirt and continues to cry into it. But Conan silently thinks to himself: "This is probably the first true face she's ever showed me."

Near the end of the second part of this case, Haibara stares off into the distance after Conan made a joke about her being 84 years old. She tells him "I'm only eighteen, about a year older than you. Maybe someday..." before she stares off into the distance again. In the manga version she says "I'm 18, just perfect for you" but quickly said "I'm kidding".

While trying to figure out a chess code at a castle where the Detective Boys are staying, Haibara walks up to Conan, puts her face close to his, and asks if he is happy because he likes solving codes. Conan blushes slightly when she gets even closer and answers "I guess so..." Immediately after, they were interrupted by Ayumi yelling, "Hey! What are you two doing!?" which was really directed at Genta and Mitsuhiko.

Conan Edogawa later gets lost, and when every one tries to look for him it starts raining. Haibara tells Ayumi to stop crying and that "Edogawa-kun isn't the type to make you worry. He'll come back himself." She then comments on Ayumi's bag and about not letting her tears enter it. Ayumi replies, "Hey how do you know Conan-kun so well..."
Haibara replies, "Come on. Why do you ask?"
"Is it because you like him, right?"
Haibara, surprised, recovers by asking, "What if I do?"
Ayumi replies, "Then...I'm in trouble..." implying that there will be a love triangle if she does. Haibara sees Ayumi is worried and does not want to trouble her anymore, so Haibara plainly states she does not have those kinds of feelings for Conan

At the start of the second Gomera movie, Ayumi falls asleep and puts her head on Conan's shoulder. When Conan turns to Haibara saying he needs to use the restroom and asks her if she would switch seats, she puts her head on Conan's shoulder too, having fallen asleep as well.

* The episodes opens with Haibara and Conan in what looks to be an abandonned and empty room. Haibara tells him that she (possibly referring to Ran) has found out about his identity. When he asks her why she's telling him all this, she tells him that he can see into the hearts of the wicked, but he couldn't understand a woman's heart, then tells him she's been in love with him since she met him. We see Conan's face, but it doesn't appear to be at all surprised, and Haibara continues with: "I guess you didn't even notice... Kamen Yaiba-san." After Mitsuhiko yells out "CUT!", it is revealed that both Conan and Haibara were merely acting, and practicing lines for Teitan Elementary School's play, with Mitsuhiko as the director.

* Conan and Haibara went to the Haido City Hotel to catch Pisco, a Black Organization member, before he kills someone using the drug that shrunk them, as ordered by Gin. During the entire episode, Haibara is seriously frightened of Gin because the night before she dreamed that he discovered her true identity and killed everyone she had contact with. She made a point to also confide to Conan that she dreamed that he was shot first, which symbolizes a great fear over any harm done to him.

* Also, while they are in Professor Agasa's car following Gin and Vodka to the Haido City Hotel. She seems to be pleased by Conan's decision to stop Pisco from murdering someone (rather than just concentrating on Gin, Vodka, and the drug) and says, "Oh, what a strong sense of justice you have" with a proud smile. Because of his decision to do the right thing, she follows him into harms way knowing that she could be murdered immediately (because Gin can recognize her using only a strand of her hair) and enters Haido City Hotel against her premonitions.

* After Haibara says, "Maybe if I had been killed by the organization back then, there would be less hassle for everyone," Conan cuts her off by giving up his glasses (the only thing preventing people from recognizing him) and putting them on her to make her feel safer. After they have an encouraging conversation about his action's similarity to Superman/Clark Kent's disguise, Haibara turns away bashfully and thanks him. He looks at her and says somewhat sarcastically "You really aren't too adorable."<ref>Episode 176 (Kaze no ko)</ref>

* Shiho is shot multiple times by Gin on the roof of the Haido City Hotel and Conan, on the first floor, is running as fast as he can, screaming her name all the way there.

* After Haibara shrinks back to child size, Conan puts his jacket on her naked body and carries her from the fire before Pisco and Gin can discover them.

She then pulled the trigger, but it turned out that it was a fake gun that shot red roses from the barrel. Symbolically, red roses represent love or passion, suggesting that Haibara might have romantic feelings towards Conan.

Haibara was petrified because she felt a familiar and scary presence from the [[Black Organization]] around. (She was right because Vermouth was disguised as Dr. Araide at that time) When Jodie asked Conan for her name, she grabbed onto his hand desperately and he understood her fear, simply saying she was a random girl he happened to sit next to.

At the end of the second episode of [[The Mysterious Passenger]], Haibara chose to stay on the bus (which contained a bomb) in an attempt to commit suicide so that she wouldn't have to worry about her future or the Black Organization anymore. Conan rushed back into the bus, risking his life to save her. They jumped out of the bus, but Conan was injured in the process. He put some of his blood on Haibara to give the police a reason to send her to the hospital, possibly as a way to keep an eye on her. It is also noted that Conan suspected that a Black Organization member was onboard the bus, so he tried to send her away. As Haibara got in the police car, Conan told her not to run away from her destiny.

Haibara was in a miserable mood throughout the two episodes. However, Ayumi, Genta, and Mitsuhiko cheered her up and Haibara was happy again. As she was smiling, Conan makes a comment saying that she should continue to smile like that because that makes her look like a child. She blushes from the comment until Conan says the wrong joke that she was 89 years old (she corrected him that she is 84 years old with scorn).

* Later that night, the Detective Boys, Conan and Haibara share a bed for sleeping. Conan and Haibara are sleeping side-by-side. When he is unable to go to sleep because of Genta and Mitsuhiko's loud, audible questions, Haibara calmly reminds him: "it can't be helped; they're just kids, not like us." Conan then takes this opportunity to ask her a question, as the scene grows quiet. Conan solemnly closes his eyes as the fringe on his hair shifts downward his forehead he asks if he can ask her something. She does not reply verbally but turns her head around, as she had her back to him before, to listen. Conan then asks: "Is there something on my face?" with something of a confused face. Haibara responds with a similar look, but appears to be dumbfounded instead.

Conan, the Detective Boys, Haibara, and Agasa, are all watching a soccer game involving the Tokyo Spirits and Noir. The game is a thrilling sudden death game with an exciting finish! While everyone walks out of the stadium, they see a game involving the Osaka team on a store television. Haibara takes special interest in a certain player on the team, Higo, because his situation in soccer closely mirrors, to her, her situation with the Black Organization, though she never admits this. He is considered a "traitor" by fans, for going from one team to another, and even fans of his own team boo at him when he makes mistakes. While Haibara and the Detective Boys are focused on the game, Conan asks Agasa about if he has new information on Sharon Vineyard, and learns that a famous Japanese actress attended the funeral, but no one remembers who it was. While they watch the game on the TV, they spot a man known as a "Hooligan", a man who takes pride on starting trouble and riots in soccer matches. While everyone is on a train packed with Noir and Tokyo supporters, the hooligan is found murdered, stabbed inside of the train.

The culprit is '''Etsutoshi Oba'''. A year ago, his twin brother was killed by Kadotake Akano during a Noir Tokyo game. Akano wrote on his website that he killed a man because he couldn't stand the violent phrases written on his site. Oba knew that man was his twin brother because when he met Akano he said, "You're still alive?" So he decided to kill him to avenge his brother but he was incriminated because he wore his brother's T-shirt. This belonged to the opposing team but Oba didn't know that because he wasn't a supporter and he followed the match via radio to avoid the victim disappear into the crowd, which was the evidence to incriminate him. In fact, he couldn't have followed the match with a T-shirt of the opposing team.

Professor Agasa takes the Detective Boys and Conan to the beach during school break while Ran and Sonoko also happen to be on the same beach. At night, all of them eat dinner in a hotel together with the lifeguards they met that morning. The man the lifeguards are supposed to meet doesn't show up so they try calling him but the only sound that can be heard is the sound of the waves. The three lifeguards decide to look for the man at the beach and find him on the shore dead, covered in scratches and wrapped in a fisherman's net.

Conan figures out the culprit and decides to use Professor Agasa's voice to reveal the trick but remembers he forgot his voice changing bow tie at the hotel. Haibara arrives bringing with her Conan's bow tie. Conan tells Ayumi, Mitsuhiko and Genta to collect some things. After the three brought them, Conan, as Professor Agasa, reveals the trick the culprit, '''Noboru Shimojo''' used to kill the man. The victim, covered in fishnet, was placed in the shore where the culprit dug a hole fit for a man. He then placed a boat with sea water on top of the victim to serve as a weight so that when the victim wakes up he won't be able to escape when the tides rises up. The killer placed false evidence on the boat so that the police would think that the victim was placed inside the boat before letting him drown. The culprit then tells that he killed the man who was responsible for his father's death and that he only gathered all his courage to bestow divine punishment upon the man. Ran then tells the man that courage is a word that gives you the strength to do what's right and not to take someone else's life. Afterwards, Haibara comes up to Ran and introduces herself.

[[Genta Kojima|Genta]] has been acting weird at school lately. He is hiding under his futon at home, and doesn't eat his lunch instead of racing to finish first which is worrying his teacher [[Sumiko Kobayashi|Kobayashi]]. When he leaves school, Genta climbs over the wall and runs, like he is trying to lose someone. When the [[Detective Boys]] confront him, he tells them someone is trying to kill him. Earlier, he had heard the sound of someone's footsteps keeping pace with him in a tunnel. Later he was pushed off a bridge, and a burning car hurtled towards him. As he was telling the Detective Boys this, they reached a place outside a store where Genta likes to play a Yaiba Game machine. A large bolt falls nearby, barely alerting the Detective Boys in time to avoid part of the store's "BAKER" sign hurtling to the ground.

[[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] examines the support cable, and determines it had been deliberately cut and someone was indeed after Genta's life. They go to a burger restaurant and Genta reveals the man he thinks is trying to kill him is the purse snatcher the police are after. Genta had seen the man sometime earlier, before he was a wanted burglar, but had forgotten where it was. Genta does remember a golden haired man was with him when he saw the thief. Genta also explains that he went to a crime scene where the snatcher struck five days ago and saw his golden-haired witness in the crowd. He took the witness to the police and told them the story, but the witness denied seeing the thief. Genta later gets a mysterious phone call: "If you tell anyone that you saw me, I will kill you!! You, your family, and everybody that you know!"

Genta tries to recall where he saw the thief. He remembers the witness sitting beside him, but doesn't remember the thief sitting down. Genta was sleepy at the time. The things he remembers about the thief are that he was holding a cigarette in his left hand, meaning he is left handed. He was also wearing a tee-shirt with a skull and the numbers 202 in [[Wikipedia:seven-segment display|digital clock-like numerals]]. Genta notices one of the customers at the burger place has a similar tee-shirt, only with the numbers 1999 instead. Conan asks the man where he got his shirt, and the man tells him it is from the Bones clothing store. The Detective Boys run to find the place, but unfortunately the criminal had followed them into the restaurant and overheard everything.

At the shop, the salesperson explains that they sold a variety of shirts like that with different text such as "Escape", "Help", and "1999" because of the doomsday prediction in 2000, but none that say 202. The salesperson doesn't remember anyone unusual either. Genta does remember a few more details about the thief though. The thief was reading a newspaper, the place allowed smoking, and Genta never took his eyes off of him meaning it was a place where it wouldn't be unusual to watch someone without making them uncomfortable. From those clues, Conan realizes the answer. To avoid alerting the thief who is watching nearby, Conan whispers something to Genta.

Genta tries to remember where he saw the purse snatcher. After eating ice cream, seeing the Flag of France, and looking at a store mirror, he heads to a barber shop. Afterwards the purse snatcher confronts him but Conan reveals it is a trap. What Genta saw was the reflection of the mirror of the barbershop. The purse snatcher's shirt actually said "SOS" instead of "202". Also, he had a cigarette in his right hand which means he is right handed. The purse snatcher is actually '''Someda Kamiyo''' who changed his hair color at the barber shop. Now the thief is surrounded by cops.

When Conan and Haibara discuss the left-handed right-handed mix-up that occurred during this case, Haibara reveals to Conan that [[Gin]] is left-handed.

A man seeks out for Kogoro Mouri to help in finding his passed wife's wind-up watch in his apartment, as Kogoro refuses because he thinks it's a ridiculous request, Professor Agasa and the Detective Boys offer help. With everyone arriving in his house a women knocks and asks for the money the man loaned, he returns part of it and borrow her a film she has been looking for. As she was eager for seeing it, she watched right there in the video room. Conan found the watch and it's still working, even though it's supposed to be stopped. The woman is found dead and the movie rewinded.

After solving the case, Conan rushes home to Ran, fearing that members of the [[Black Organization]] were the ones who stole the material on Kogoro's investigations and that the detective is constantly monitored. Upon arriving home, Conan discovers that his suspicions were unfounded and that Ran is fine, but Conan does not recognize that someone is really watching the agency: Shuichi Akai.

As the sommelier guesses two of the wines correctly the president gets frustrated and goes to his wine cellar for a rare wine. They all realize that the president has taken too long and discover his dead body in the wine cellar which has been found locked.

The culprit turned out to be '''Takeo Nonaka'''. He committed the crime by first knocking on the windows in the wine cellar. Kusaku then deactivated the alarm system and opened the window. Nonaka then got Kusaku to come outside, and then killed him. Nonaka then used Kusaku's key to lock the door, and replaced it in his pocket. Back outside the window, he put the body on two metal poles, and secured the poles to him by putting them through his belt. He then put the poles through the window, tilted them, and the body was placed in the position it was found. Lastly he put a string around the hook on the window, and pulled, which closed it. The proof is his wine-soaked handkerchief that he used to wipe the poles clean of wine. Nonaka confesses that he killed the president because they rose the interest on their debt and they couldn't pay.

The [[Detective Boys]] are stranded on a mountain when [[Hiroshi Agasa|Agasa]]'s car breaks down. Seeking shelter from the rain they come across a villa where piano music was heard and enter the house when their calls are unanswered. Inside, they explore and discover a diary on the table confessing to a plan of a kidnapping and murdering a boy; a blackout then occurs due to the storm. They find a small coffin planned for the murder and realize its empty and the possibility the boy is still be alive. At that moment, piano music is heard again. [[Conan]] assures them it will be safe to search the house as the culprit is playing the piano. Ayumi wanders off on her own and finds a photo of a family and a room with water leaking out of it.

Conan notices the piano chair was set to a child's height and deduces where the boy is. He has the Detective Boys sing a song in the piano room and catches the boy watching them and befriends him. The boy, Keita Onoda, is a piano prodigy to which the kidnapper abducted to allow his daughter to win a piano competition. Conan also reveals the dairy entry is out of order due to Keita's tampering and that the kidnapper felt increasingly guilty as the days went on. After reading the last page in the dairy, they realize the kidnapper plans to suicide in the bathroom and manage to save him. In the aftermath, Keita's mother does not push charges due to Keita's defense. The kidnapper's daughter meanwhile, revealed she skipped the piano competition as she was worried about Keita's disappearance.

[[Kogoro Mouri]] was invited to make an introduction in an episode of a popular detective TV serial. The star of the show revealed himself to be very disagreeable with the rest of the cast, one of whom, Ruri Amaki turned out to be a fellow classmate of Kogoro when they were children. Ruri revealed to [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] and [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] who were present that she, Kogoro, and Kisaki, were classmates since kindergarten. Ran and Conan learned that the brainy Kisaki and the underachiever Kogoro seemed inexplicably drawn to each other, to quarrel. As the other classmates suspected, time showed that the arguments were intended to disguise their mutual attraction. The star challenged Kogoro to solve the mystery of the murder scene being filmed. To prevent Kogoro from embarrassing himself, Conan used the tranquilizer dart on Kogoro and cracked the puzzle with the clues present. During a break in the filming, the star was discovered with his throat slit, with Ruri over the body and her hands bloody.

Conan and the Detective Boys are taking the transit bus to a ski resort where they meet [[Tomoaki Araide|Araide]] and [[Jodie Starling|Jodie]] aboard the bus. Haibara is able to sense that Vermouth is on the bus and hides herself to prevent her from being found. Soon after, the bus is hi-jacked by two armed men who use the passengers as hostages and demand the city to release their boss.

When the bus enters a tunnel, the armed men force [[Tomoaki Araide|Araide]] and a passenger named [[Shuichi Akai]] to wear the ski gear the hijackers were wearing. The hijackers then use Miharu Tomino, a woman chewing gum as a hostage and proceed to leave the bus.

Conan reveals that '''Miharu Tomino''' is an accomplice of theirs and that they plan to detonate the bombs in the ski bags once they are off the bus. The Detective Boys are able to inform the driver to stop suddenly which allows Conan to apprehend the criminals. Tomino accidentally activates the bomb giving them a few minutes before it detonates. The passengers leave the bus but Haibara remains seated in the bus as she plans to die in the explosion and subsequently prevent the Black Organization from finding her and harming those around her. Conan rushes back in the bus, grabs Haibara, and escape through the back window of the bus before the explosion occurs.

[[Conan]] and [[Haibara]] have an interesting relationship. Initially, Conan scorned Haibara for being part of the Black Organization and the inventor of murderous [[APTX 4869]], but he has since warmed up to her as a valuable teammate and someone to confide his true thoughts with when they conflict with his child cover. On her part, Haibara expresses a lot of interest in Conan's personality, intelligence, and sense of justice. This has led to the theory that Haibara is in love with Conan.

In Episode 223, it is revealed that Conan knows Haibara's true name, [[Shiho Miyano]], but he never calls her that, despite her calling him "Kudo-kun".

== Relationship analysis ==

It is shown in several manga chapters and anime episodes that Haibara gives hints about liking Conan. However, whenever Conan asks her about it, she always claims to be joking. Fans think she is trying to hide her pain on the fact that he loves [[Ran Mouri|Ran]]. Conan watches out for Haibara's safety and tries to protect and save Haibara if anything happens to her. He also worries about her mental condition when the Black Organization is involved. [[Yukiko Kudo]] and [[Jodie Starling]] sense that Haibara might have strong romantic feelings for Conan.

* Upon Haibara's arrival at Teitan Elementary School, Genta eagerly offers the seat next to him for her to sit in. But as Haibara walks towards the desks, she brushes right past Genta and takes the empty seat next to Conan, and in monotone says to him: "Nice to meet you." Shocking Conan, the only thing he can manage to say is: "Yeah..."

* After class is over, the Detective Boys try to catch up with Haibara in the hallway, wanting to ask her to walk home with them. Haibara ignores all of Ayumi's attempts to talk to her until she inquires about her address, to which she replies: "22 Beika Block, Second Street." Conan regards the address as familiar and remarks to himself that her house can't be too far away from where his is. Haibara then looks over her shoulder and smirks at him, again shocking Conan and causing a small blush to appear right above his nose. Genta notices and asks him if he "likes that stuck-up woman". Which Conan quickly denies.

* When Ayumi and Mitsuhiko are telling Haibara about the Detective Boys, she asks, "Edogawa-kun is in it too?". Shortly after, the Detective Boys come across a case, where a fellow classmate's older brother has been missing and wants to find him.

* After solving said case, and Ai fires a gun through a window, causing her to get a scolding from Inspector Megure, and starts fake-crying (impressively well) to get out of it. Conan walks Haibara back home to her house, while she is still crying. When Conan drops her off nearby her home, Haibara immediately stops crying and then starts talking about a drug called "APTX 4869". Conan is confused, as Haibara continues to ramble about the drug, how he took it, and how she did too. It is apparent that Haibara isn't just your average little girl. It is not until Haibara tells Conan that she's occupied Professor Agasa's house and that he's "not in this world anymore", that Conan begins to freak out. He tries to call Professor Agasa but does not get an answer, while Haibara smirks evilly in the background (she's got the upper hand, at the moment). Conan then leaves Haibara behind and sprints to Professor Agasa's house, hoping to find him safe.

* Later on, Conan, Haibara, and Agasa come across another case. One involving the locked-room-murder of a university professor. After Conan solves the case, Agasa and Conan decide to head back home. When Conan gestures for Haibara to come along, we see a tear roll down her face as she asks why he didn't help her sister. To answer a confused Conan's face, Haibara explains (still in tears) that Hirota Misami was a fake name her sister took from the now-deceased university professor, and Conan realizes that the same girl (from the previous episode) who died during the one-billion-yen robbery case. Haibara continues to shout at a stunned Conan, with all his deducing skills, he should have been able to see right through her sister's case. Haibara breaks down and falls on her knees in front of Conan and clutches his shirt and continues to cry into it. But Conan silently thinks to himself: "This is probably the first true face she's ever showed me."

Near the end of the second part of this case, Haibara stares off into the distance after Conan made a joke about her being 84 years old. She tells him "I'm only eighteen, about a year older than you. Maybe someday..." before she stares off into the distance again. In the manga version she says "I'm 18, just perfect for you" but quickly said "I'm kidding".

While trying to figure out a chess code at a castle where the Detective Boys are staying, Haibara walks up to Conan, puts her face close to his, and asks if he is happy because he likes solving codes. Conan blushes slightly when she gets even closer and answers "I guess so..." Immediately after, they were interrupted by Ayumi yelling, "Hey! What are you two doing!?" which was really directed at Genta and Mitsuhiko.

Conan Edogawa later gets lost, and when every one tries to look for him it starts raining. Haibara tells Ayumi to stop crying and that "Edogawa-kun isn't the type to make you worry. He'll come back himself." She then comments on Ayumi's bag and about not letting her tears enter it. Ayumi replies, "Hey how do you know Conan-kun so well..."
Haibara replies, "Come on. Why do you ask?"
"Is it because you like him, right?"
Haibara, surprised, recovers by asking, "What if I do?"
Ayumi replies, "Then...I'm in trouble..." implying that there will be a love triangle if she does. Haibara sees Ayumi is worried and does not want to trouble her anymore, so Haibara plainly states she does not have those kinds of feelings for Conan

=== (Episode 138-139) [[The Final Screening Murder Case]] - [[Volume 23]] File 1 ~ File 3 ===

At the start of the second Gomera movie, Ayumi falls asleep and puts her head on Conan's shoulder. When Conan turns to Haibara saying he needs to use the restroom and asks her if she would switch seats, she puts her head on Conan's shoulder too, having fallen asleep as well.

* The episodes opens with Haibara and Conan in what looks to be an abandonned and empty room. Haibara tells him that she (possibly referring to Ran) has found out about his identity. When he asks her why she's telling him all this, she tells him that he can see into the hearts of the wicked, but he couldn't understand a woman's heart, then tells him she's been in love with him since she met him. We see Conan's face, but it doesn't appear to be at all surprised, and Haibara continues with: "I guess you didn't even notice... Kamen Yaiba-san." After Mitsuhiko yells out "CUT!", it is revealed that both Conan and Haibara were merely acting, and practicing lines for Teitan Elementary School's play, with Mitsuhiko as the director.

* Conan and Haibara went to the Haido City Hotel to catch Pisco, a Black Organization member, before he kills someone using the drug that shrunk them, as ordered by Gin. During the entire episode, Haibara is seriously frightened of Gin because the night before she dreamed that he discovered her true identity and killed everyone she had contact with. She made a point to also confide to Conan that she dreamed that he was shot first, which symbolizes a great fear over any harm done to him.

* Also, while they are in Professor Agasa's car following Gin and Vodka to the Haido City Hotel. She seems to be pleased by Conan's decision to stop Pisco from murdering someone (rather than just concentrating on Gin, Vodka, and the drug) and says, "Oh, what a strong sense of justice you have" with a proud smile. Because of his decision to do the right thing, she follows him into harms way knowing that she could be murdered immediately (because Gin can recognize her using only a strand of her hair) and enters Haido City Hotel against her premonitions.

* After Haibara says, "Maybe if I had been killed by the organization back then, there would be less hassle for everyone," Conan cuts her off by giving up his glasses (the only thing preventing people from recognizing him) and putting them on her to make her feel safer. After they have an encouraging conversation about his action's similarity to Superman/Clark Kent's disguise, Haibara turns away bashfully and thanks him. He looks at her and says somewhat sarcastically "You really aren't too adorable."<ref>Episode 176 (Kaze no ko)</ref>

* Shiho is shot multiple times by Gin on the roof of the Haido City Hotel and Conan, on the first floor, is running as fast as he can, screaming her name all the way there.

* After Haibara shrinks back to child size, Conan puts his jacket on her naked body and carries her from the fire before Pisco and Gin can discover them.

She then pulled the trigger, but it turned out that it was a fake gun that shot red roses from the barrel. Symbolically, red roses represent love or passion, suggesting that Haibara might have romantic feelings towards Conan.

Haibara was petrified because she felt a familiar and scary presence from the [[Black Organization]] around. (She was right because Vermouth was disguised as Dr. Araide at that time) When Jodie asked Conan for her name, she grabbed onto his hand desperately and he understood her fear, simply saying she was a random girl he happened to sit next to.

At the end of the second episode of [[The Mysterious Passenger]], Haibara chose to stay on the bus (which contained a bomb) in an attempt to commit suicide so that she wouldn't have to worry about her future or the Black Organization anymore. Conan rushed back into the bus, risking his life to save her. They jumped out of the bus, but Conan was injured in the process. He put some of his blood on Haibara to give the police a reason to send her to the hospital, possibly as a way to keep an eye on her. It is also noted that Conan suspected that a Black Organization member was onboard the bus, so he tried to send her away. As Haibara got in the police car, Conan told her not to run away from her destiny.

Haibara was in a miserable mood throughout the two episodes. However, Ayumi, Genta, and Mitsuhiko cheered her up and Haibara was happy again. As she was smiling, Conan makes a comment saying that she should continue to smile like that because that makes her look like a child. She blushes from the comment until Conan says the wrong joke that she was 89 years old (she corrected him that she is 84 years old with scorn).

Conan is shocked and insists she'd probably only been looking at him to see how the "test subject" for APTX 4869 was doing. Despite this, Conan later tests Haibara, otherwise.

* Before Yukiko left the Detective Boys, Conan and Haibara she's quick to remind Conan to: "never leave her side," before she drives off. To which Conan irritably replies: "I know, I know."

* Later that night, the Detective Boys, Conan and Haibara share a bed for sleeping. Conan and Haibara are sleeping side-by-side. When he is unable to go to sleep because of Genta and Mitsuhiko's loud, audible questions, Haibara calmly reminds him: "it can't be helped; they're just kids, not like us." Conan then takes this opportunity to ask her a question, as the scene grows quiet. Conan solemnly closes his eyes as the fringe on his hair shifts downward his forehead he asks if he can ask her something. She does not reply verbally but turns her head around, as she had her back to him before, to listen. Conan then asks: "Is there something on my face?" with something of a confused face. Haibara responds with a similar look, but appears to be dumbfounded instead.

Conan investigates and realizing how the murder is done, impersonates Agasa's voice and declares '''Kosuke Imura''' the murderer. He explains that Imura used the cooler from the shrimp's tank to fake the time of death, evidenced by the wet glue that has yet to dry on Nishida's fingertip and the dead shrimps in the same aquarium. As evidence Nishida's contact lens is found in the dead shrimp aquarium and a nitrous acid reaction reveals gunpowder was found on Imura's shirt and the cooler. Imura confesses and reveals he had been designing Nishida's aquarium for the past five years and that he murdered Nishida when he learned that he was going to be replaced.

After tranquilizing Heiji instead of Kogoro, he then declares '''Kento Togano''' is the culprit, the boyfriend of Ayako Oki. He reveals that the second incident was not for Ayako but for Toshiaki Fujisawa, the train station employee. The reason why Ayako knew that Kento was the culprit is because she decided to cheat off his Holmes test, but when she saw his test, it was blank, because he knew it would never be graded and he was busy preparing for the killing of the host. Kento confesses and reveals Toshiaki was the publisher of a Holmes book he didn't like, so he did this for Holmes. After Heiji woke up, he reveals that he was spying on Conan during the deduction (at some point Kogoro hit him upside the head, which woke Heiji up but he pretended to still be asleep), so now he knows the truth about Conan's identity.

Conan Edogawa and Ai Haibara

[[Conan]] and [[Haibara]] have an interesting relationship. Initially, Conan scorned Haibara for being part of the Black Organization and the inventor of murderous [[APTX 4869]], but he has since warmed up to her as a valuable teammate and someone to confide his true thoughts with when they conflict with his child cover. On her part, Haibara expresses a lot of interest in Conan's personality, intelligence, and sense of justice. This has led to the theory that Haibara is in love with Conan.

In Episode 223, it is revealed that Conan knows Haibara's true name, [[Shiho Miyano]], but he never calls her that, despite her calling him "Kudo-kun".

== Relationship analysis ==

It is shown in several manga chapters and anime episodes that Haibara gives hints about liking Conan. However, whenever Conan asks her about it, she always claims to be joking. Fans think she is trying to hide her pain on the fact that he loves [[Ran Mouri|Ran]]. Conan watches out for Haibara's safety and tries to protect and save Haibara if anything happens to her. He also worries about her mental condition when the Black Organization is involved. [[Yukiko Kudo]] and [[Jodie Starling]] sense that Haibara might have strong romantic feelings for Conan.

* Upon Haibara's arrival at Teitan Elementary School, Genta eagerly offers the seat next to him for her to sit in. But as Haibara walks towards the desks, she brushes right past Genta and takes the empty seat next to Conan, and in monotone says to him: "Nice to meet you." Shocking Conan, the only thing he can manage to say is: "Yeah..."

* After class is over, the Detective Boys try to catch up with Haibara in the hallway, wanting to ask her to walk home with them. Haibara ignores all of Ayumi's attempts to talk to her until she inquires about her address, to which she replies: "22 Beika Block, Second Street." Conan regards the address as familiar and remarks to himself that her house can't be too far away from where his is. Haibara then looks over her shoulder and smirks at him, again shocking Conan and causing a small blush to appear right above his nose. Genta notices and asks him if he "likes that stuck-up woman". Which Conan quickly denies.

* When Ayumi and Mitsuhiko are telling Haibara about the Detective Boys, she asks, "Edogawa-kun is in it too?". Shortly after, the Detective Boys come across a case, where a fellow classmate's older brother has been missing and wants to find him.

* After solving said case, and Ai fires a gun through a window, causing her to get a scolding from Inspector Megure, and starts fake-crying (impressively well) to get out of it. Conan walks Haibara back home to her house, while she is still crying. When Conan drops her off nearby her home, Haibara immediately stops crying and then starts talking about a drug called "APTX 4869". Conan is confused, as Haibara continues to ramble about the drug, how he took it, and how she did too. It is apparent that Haibara isn't just your average little girl. It is not until Haibara tells Conan that she's occupied Professor Agasa's house and that he's "not in this world anymore", that Conan begins to freak out. He tries to call Professor Agasa but does not get an answer, while Haibara smirks evilly in the background (she's got the upper hand, at the moment). Conan then leaves Haibara behind and sprints to Professor Agasa's house, hoping to find him safe.

* Later on, Conan, Haibara, and Agasa come across another case. One involving the locked-room-murder of a university professor. After Conan solves the case, Agasa and Conan decide to head back home. When Conan gestures for Haibara to come along, we see a tear roll down her face as she asks why he didn't help her sister. To answer a confused Conan's face, Haibara explains (still in tears) that Hirota Misami was a fake name her sister took from the now-deceased university professor, and Conan realizes that the same girl (from the previous episode) who died during the one-billion-yen robbery case. Haibara continues to shout at a stunned Conan, with all his deducing skills, he should have been able to see right through her sister's case. Haibara breaks down and falls on her knees in front of Conan and clutches his shirt and continues to cry into it. But Conan silently thinks to himself: "This is probably the first true face she's ever showed me."

Near the end of the second part of this case, Haibara stares off into the distance after Conan made a joke about her being 84 years old. She tells him "I'm only eighteen, about a year older than you. Maybe someday..." before she stares off into the distance again. In the manga version she says "I'm 18, just perfect for you" but quickly said "I'm kidding".

=== (Episode 136-137) [[The Old Blue Castle Investigation Case]] - [[Volume 20]] File 10 ~ [[Volume 21]] File 3 ===

While trying to figure out a chess code at a castle where the Detective Boys are staying, Haibara walks up to Conan, puts her face close to his, and asks if he is happy because he likes solving codes. Conan blushes slightly when she gets even closer and answers "I guess so..." Immediately after, they were interrupted by Ayumi yelling, "Hey! What are you two doing!?" which was really directed at Genta and Mitsuhiko.

Conan Edogawa later gets lost, and when every one tries to look for him it starts raining. Haibara tells Ayumi to stop crying and that "Edogawa-kun isn't the type to make you worry. He'll come back himself." She then comments on Ayumi's bag and about not letting her tears enter it. Ayumi replies, "Hey how do you know Conan-kun so well..."
Haibara replies, "Come on. Why do you ask?"
"Is it because you like him, right?"
Haibara, surprised, recovers by asking, "What if I do?"
Ayumi replies, "Then...I'm in trouble..." implying that there will be a love triangle if she does. Haibara sees Ayumi is worried and does not want to trouble her anymore, so Haibara plainly states she does not have those kinds of feelings for Conan

=== (Episode 138-139) [[The Final Screening Murder Case]] - [[Volume 23]] File 1 ~ File 3 ===

At the start of the second Gomera movie, Ayumi falls asleep and puts her head on Conan's shoulder. When Conan turns to Haibara saying he needs to use the restroom and asks her if she would switch seats, she puts her head on Conan's shoulder too, having fallen asleep as well.

* The episodes opens with Haibara and Conan in what looks to be an abandonned and empty room. Haibara tells him that she (possibly referring to Ran) has found out about his identity. When he asks her why she's telling him all this, she tells him that he can see into the hearts of the wicked, but he couldn't understand a woman's heart, then tells him she's been in love with him since she met him. We see Conan's face, but it doesn't appear to be at all surprised, and Haibara continues with: "I guess you didn't even notice... Kamen Yaiba-san." After Mitsuhiko yells out "CUT!", it is revealed that both Conan and Haibara were merely acting, and practicing lines for Teitan Elementary School's play, with Mitsuhiko as the director.

* Conan and Haibara went to the Haido City Hotel to catch Pisco, a Black Organization member, before he kills someone using the drug that shrunk them, as ordered by Gin. During the entire episode, Haibara is seriously frightened of Gin because the night before she dreamed that he discovered her true identity and killed everyone she had contact with. She made a point to also confide to Conan that she dreamed that he was shot first, which symbolizes a great fear over any harm done to him.

* Also, while they are in Professor Agasa's car following Gin and Vodka to the Haido City Hotel. She seems to be pleased by Conan's decision to stop Pisco from murdering someone (rather than just concentrating on Gin, Vodka, and the drug) and says, "Oh, what a strong sense of justice you have" with a proud smile. Because of his decision to do the right thing, she follows him into harms way knowing that she could be murdered immediately (because Gin can recognize her using only a strand of her hair) and enters Haido City Hotel against her premonitions.

* After Haibara says, "Maybe if I had been killed by the organization back then, there would be less hassle for everyone," Conan cuts her off by giving up his glasses (the only thing preventing people from recognizing him) and putting them on her to make her feel safer. After they have an encouraging conversation about his action's similarity to Superman/Clark Kent's disguise, Haibara turns away bashfully and thanks him. He looks at her and says somewhat sarcastically "You really aren't too adorable."<ref>Episode 176 (Kaze no ko)</ref>

* Shiho is shot multiple times by Gin on the roof of the Haido City Hotel and Conan, on the first floor, is running as fast as he can, screaming her name all the way there.

* After Haibara shrinks back to child size, Conan puts his jacket on her naked body and carries her from the fire before Pisco and Gin can discover them.

Symbolically, red roses represent love or passion, suggesting that Haibara might have romantic feelings towards Conan.

For example, during [[The Mysterious Passenger]] episodes, Haibara chose to stay on the bus (which contained a bomb) in an attempt to suicide so she wouldn't have to worry about her future or the Black Organization anymore. Conan rushed back into the bus at risk of his own life and saved her, telling her to not run away from her destiny. Conan was injured in the process and used his blood to give the police a reason to send Haibara to the hospital, possibly as a way to keep an eye on her. It is also noted that Conan may have thought a Black Organization member was onboard the bus, so he tried to send her away.

Haibara was in a miserable mood throughout the two episodes. However, Ayumi, Genta, and Mitsuhiko cheered her up and Haibara was happy again. She blushes from the comment until Conan says the wrong joke that she was 89 years old (she corrected him that she is 84 years old with scorn).

* Before Yukiko left the Detective Boys, Conan and Haibara she's quick to remind Conan to: "never leave her side," before she drives off. To which Conan irritably replies: "I know, I know."

* Later that night, the Detective Boys, Conan and Haibara share a bed for sleeping. Conan and Haibara are sleeping side-by-side. When he is unable to go to sleep because of Genta and Mitsuhiko's loud, audible questions, Haibara calmly reminds him: "it can't be helped; they're just kids, not like us." Conan then takes this opportunity to ask her a question, as the scene grows quiet. Conan solemnly closes his eyes as the fringe on his hair shifts downward his forehead he asks if he can ask her something. She does not reply verbally but turns her head around, as she had her back to him before, to listen. Conan then asks: "Is there something on my face?" with something of a confused face. Haibara responds with a similar look, but appears to be dumbfounded instead.

Jodie asks Haibara to join the [[witness protection program]] for her own safety. Haibara turns down the offer because she wants to continue to stay with Conan, Agasa, and the detective boys rather than run from the threat of the Black Organization.

Just then, Mitsuhiko notices that behind them, a case is about to come up, prompting Ayumi to cry out, "An affair (jiken) between Conan-kun and Ai-chan!?" upon seeing the two together. As a common reaction, Conan and Ai stare at Ayumi with bewildered and surprised faces.

Haibara admitted that she wanted to forget about everything and always be with Conan "forever, just like this", which shocked him. However, she immediately said she was joking to make Conan feel better.

During the case Haibara found a footprint around the back of the shop. Conan then asks her to take a picture of it for him. She replies "Since when did I become your assistant?" he then said "Not assistant, partner." Haibara then comments about Conan being a smooth talker.

While noting that people in love often disguise it by being mean to the object of their affections she then proceeds to emotionally torture Conan throughout the episode, she is also quick to notice a love triangle of which Conan is oblivious.

* Conan is always there to support Haibara when she mentions about her sister and how Haibara misses her. He always tells her that she is never alone because she has friends who surround her all the time.
