He is a recently dispatched operative who specializes in deduction and intelligence gathering and frequently works with [[Vermouth]]. He hates [[Shuichi Akai]] and the [[FBI]] for some unknown reason. Amuro poses as a private detective who first appeared as a waiter while helping a client with a case, and later becomes a waiter at Café Poirot and [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]]'s apprentice.

==Background==
Amuro's past within the [[Black Organization]] is unknown, but it seems he has been tied to them for a while. He knew [[Shiho Miyano]]'s parents who died when Shiho was young suggesting that he has some involvement since he was a teenager.<ref name=824p5>Manga Volume 78, File 7 (824), Page 5: "Mystery Train: Final Destination"</ref> He was the rival of [[Shuichi Akai]] (alias Dai Moroboshi) who was [[Akemi Miyano|Akemi]]'s lover at the time.<ref name=824p5/> He had suspected Dai Moroboshi was a spy for the FBI which turned out to be the case.<ref name=824p5/>

Soon after Shuichi Akai's death, [[Hidemi Hondou|Kir]] called [[Jodie Starling]] to report that a new member of the Black Organization called Bourbon had been dispatched. Kir said that Bourbon's target was the escaped scientist Shiho Miyano and that Bourbon has excellent information gathering skills and keen insight.<ref name=622p4>Manga Volume 60, File 3, Page 4: "Red, White and Yellow"</ref> Later Tooru Amuro appears as a free-lance private detective who also maintains employment on the side that may aid in investigation, like his part-time job as a waiter at Ristorante Sundayrino. Amuro has a cheerful personality. He is also generous, bringing a plate of sandwiches for the detective agency bought with his money. In more serious situations, he seems to be patient, keeping calm even while others are abusing him. Although somewhat of a "cool type", he does not hide his emotions and is quite expressive. Like other detectives in ''[[Detective Conan]]'', he enjoys presenting his deductions about cases to others. He is also manipulative, tricking others into performing certain actions so he can gather information. Kogoro calls him "effeminate".

[[Gin]] says Bourbon has a secretive personality like [[Vermouth]], and that no one can ever guess what he's up to or what he will do.<ref name=703p3/> [[Vodka]] says that Bourbon hates Shuichi Akai even more than Gin does, although a reason for this hatred is not given.<ref name=703p3/> Bourbon believes he is the only person capable of killing Akai.<ref name=703p3/> Gin said that if Bourbon found out Akai was alive, he would surely boast that his suspicion was correct.<ref name=703p3/> Gin and Bourbon probably don't get along and they don't seem to communicate with one another.<ref name=703p3/> It is also seen that Amuro has taken a serious interest in young [[Conan]] for reasons unknown, since there is no evidence that leads to him knowing Conan's real identity. He has dark skin, lighter than, but closer to [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]]'s color and has dyed blond hair. He wears glasses at first, but it is unknown if he actually needs them because he was using them to conceal his identity at the time and takes them off midway through the case and has not had them on since. Unlike other Black Organization members, he dresses mostly casually and sometimes wears outfits with only a little black. This may be because he is undercover and is trying to blend in.

==Mission==
Bourbon's primary mission was to search for the escaped scientist [[Shiho Miyano]], which the [[CIA]] spy [[Kir]] heard about and informed the [[FBI]] of. Amuro also had a second secret mission fueled by his hunch that his archenemy Shuichi Akai should not have died so easily;<ref name=703p3>Manga [[Volume 67]], File 7, page 3: "The Truth Amidst the Snowstorm"</ref> Amuro received [[Anokata|the boss's]] permission to verify Akai's death. He approached the FBI as [[Scar Akai|an Akai lookalike]] by using [[Vermouth]]'s disguise help hoping to see if Akai was truly dead.<ref name=824p7>Manga [[Volume 78]], File 7 (824), pg 7: "Final Destination"</ref> He later apprenticed himself to [[Kogoro Mouri]] because Amuro suspected the detective may be connected to Sherry.<ref name=827p16>Manga [[Volume 78]], File 10 (827), pg 16: "The key to solving the mystery"</ref> (Kogoro was previously suspected of being linked to Sherry because the [[Criminal Tracking Glasses|tracker]], [[microphone]], and gum combo Gin found on Kir's shoe after [[Black Impact! Jodie passes this information onto [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]]. Before Bourbon appeared as Tooru Amuro, he disguised as [[Scar Akai|Akai with a large burn]] with [[Vermouth]]'s help. In this disguise, he approached the close friends of Shuichi Akai to gauge whether he was truly dead. Bourbon first used the disguise to approach [[Jodie Starling]] at [[Teito Bank]], then [[Andre Camel]] at [[Beika Department Store]], he also sends Kogoro a text message on his deduction of the current case using a borrowed phone from a bystander. Whether he did this out of concern for the hostages or his own well being is unknown.

Amuro is hired by to-be-bride Hatsune Kamon to investigate whether her to-be-husband, Raita Banba, is cheating on her. As part of the investigation, Amuro tells Kamon to have their pre-wedding celebration at the restaurant, Ristorante Sundayrino, where he works as a waiter. He purposefully drops some cake on Banba's pants trying to make Banba too embarrassed to approach women later. Banba complains about Amuro's "mistake", but Kamon tells Amuro it's alright to protect him. Banba later gets drunk, and Amuro has to point out his phone is ringing. [[File:Amuro_abuse.jpg|thumb|left|220px|Amuro gets knocked over by a case suspect]]Banba goes to the bathroom to meet the person who called him, the detective Sanji Haruka, who Banba hired to find out if Kamon was cheating on him. Sanji had been following the wife and discovered her meeting with Amuro, so Sanji mistakenly reports Kamon is having an affair with Amuro. Sanji confirms Amuro has a matching voice by asking Amuro to repeat his order, a bourbon on the rocks.

Banba is furious at Amuro and begins to harass him; like shouldering him and knocking Amuro over in front of the other waiters. Later Kamon dies in a car fire that is ruled an arson, and Banba accuses Amuro of starting it because he is Kamon's lover. Amuro denies this and says that Banba may have been trying to disguise wounds he received while fighting with Kamon by tripping Amuro. Amuro then takes off his glasses and reveals himself to be a private detective hired by Kamon, not her lover.

After Amuro correctly gives his deduction that Sanji was a detective hired by Banba, Kogoro accuses Amuro of driving Kamon to suicide by telling her about her husband's shameless flirting, but Amuro denies contacting Kamon by phone. Amuro accuses Banba of being the murderer, which antagonizes Banba into to rushing him. Amuro dodges and trips Banba and asks Kogoro to hold Banba's legs. From the condition of the bottom of Banba's shoes and Amuro's detailed background investigation of Banba and Kamon, [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] is able to deduce that Kamon's death was really a suicide. Amuro continues to accuse Banba after more DNA evidence comes in, but Conan prevents his arrest by using [[Kogoro#Detective_Skills|Sleeping Kogoro]] to ask Banba a critical question that reveals he never stepped outside. Amuro challenges Kogoro's deduction, suggesting that maybe Banba used a [[Shuichi Akai|knit cap]] and [[Scar Akai|long windbreaker]] to disguise himself, but Sleeping Kogoro counters by pointing out the condition of Banba's shoes. Defeated, Amuro demands Kogoro explain the matching DNA, which he does, revealing that Kamon and Banba are identical twins, but Kamon had a chromosomal abnormality that resulted in her being phenotypically female. Humbled, Amuro explains the abnormality condition to those present which [[Juzo Megure|Inspector Megure]] confirms.

One day later, Amuro has started work as a waiter at [[Setting#Cafe_Poirot|Café Poirot]] below [[Setting#The_Mouri_Detective_Agency|Mouri Detective Agency]]. He asks Kogoro if he can be Kogoro's apprentice and whispers some unheard amount of money per case that he is will pay if Kogoro brings Amuro along with him. The amount thrills Kogoro into accepting Amuro's offer immediately. Conan mentally moans about how yet another bothersome person has appeared.

While Kogoro and the gang are watching a news report on a recent bank robbery, Amuro stops by with sandwiches from the Poirot after finishing his part time job for the day. After commenting on the robbery, Amuro reveals that he wants the scoop on Kogoro's newest case request after deducing from Kogoro's appearance and habits that Kogoro had a case. Kogoro gets a text from the client requesting that Kogoro switch the meeting location to the [[Setting#Cafe_Columbo|Café Columbo]], and Amuro goes with them after changing out of his work clothes. At the Columbo, Kogoro explains to Amuro the request was to find the locker a key belongs to. The client fails to show, so Amuro, Kogoro, Conan, and Ran go back to the Detective Agency to make sure the client didn't actually turn up there instead. When Amuro arrives at the agency, he and Conan notice someone had broken in and appeared to have intercepted the client while they were out. Stepping outside, Amuro explains his deductions to the rest of the gang and that the culprit is hiding in the restroom. [[File:Amuro796.jpg|thumb|left|220px|Amuro and Conan heard the gunshot]] Before Amuro can open the bathroom door, a gunshot rings out, and Conan rushes in to find a dead man who apparently committed suicide with a gun and a taped-up crying woman. The woman's story is that the now-dead guy was interrogating her about the key and locker and committed suicide when Kogoro returned early, but Amuro and Conan suspect she is lying and may have murdered the man.

Amuro questions the woman a little, and Megure comments to Kogoro about he has yet another detective hanging around him. Curious, Amuro asks about [[Masumi Sera|the other detective]] and hears she is a young girl. Amuro offers to drive the formerly tied up woman to her home after questioning was postponed until the next day. Conan, Ran and Kogoro come along for the ride. At the woman's house, Conan, Amuro, and Kogoro announce they need to use the restroom and go inside. Ran turns on her cellphone and immediately gets a call from Sera, who was worried after seeing the news of the murder. The call is full of static, and Amuro suddenly shuts Ran's phone and announces the place is bugged, which is interfering with the cellphone signal. Amuro gets out a bug detector and begins sweeping the house.
Ran, Amuro, and Kogoro find several bugs before coming across a large suitcase under a bed that is emitting a horrible smell. They opened the bugged suitcase and find a corpse inside.

Soon afterwards, it was revealed that the culprit was indeed the woman, who sent Kogoro a message claiming that she was having Conan in her hands. During the investigation, they have found out a video recording summary, which contains many news about the robbery, inside the TV. Amuro then quickly gave out the speculation that the apartment might actually belonged to one of the robbers instead. Ran didn't understand how a detective of such level of intelligence could willingly become her father's apprentice. However, Amuro modestly answered that Kogoro was just testing him, and that he still had got much to learn.

Later, they decided to check up the house's computer, which was protected with password. Amuro discovered that the password was hidden under the desk, but instead of revealing the fact directly, he chose to hint Kogoro and Ran about it. After having gained access to the computer,
they have all found out the identity of the third robber and her location, where Conan's kidnapper would most likely pay a visit. They followed the address and drive to that place, Sera approached them closely from behind. However, while still on the road, they suddenly learned that the third robber had been overwhelming both Conan and the killer, and they were in serious danger. Right after determining the exact car that those three were in, Amuro purposely crashed his own car into theirs in order to stop it. In the end, the robber was defeated by Sera, Conan was safe. Amuro, Sera, Okiya (who was driving Agasa and Haibara to the scene) were all shown to receive a mysterious call. Vermouth called Bourbon and commented that he had gained some trust<ref>It wasn't specified whose trust</ref> and that she expected him to keep his (unstated) promise to her.

Amuro has a day off of work. After Amuro had his encounter with Sera in the previous case, he notices that she looks like Akai, so Amuro once again disguises himself as Akai to gauge her reaction. However, like Jodie and Camel before her, Sera was just as shocked by his appearence.

Conan and the [[Detective Boys]] encounter Amuro who was coming from the police station due to the event of the [[Detectives' Nocturne|"Online Client"]] case. Because he had crashed his car into the car of the woman who kidnapped Conan, he was called to come there and finish some procedures so the police could determine whether his action had been overkill. He expresses his disappointment at not being able to meet [[Professor Agasa]] with them. He also states that he had another purpose for coming to the station, but when asked by Conan what it is, Amuro claims that it "has already disappeared".

Later, when [[Wataru Takagi|Takagi]] is still trapped, he reminisces of a time with his mentor [[Wataru Date]] and he said that Date was the top student at the police academy. However, Date rebutted this and told Takagi that he had always been number 2. He also said that neither his brains nor his brawn was anything compared to that guy who was like a gentleman. Later, it's revealed that the person whom Date was talking about is Amuro. He leaves a toothpick by Date's grave and watches Takagi and Sato pay their respects. Before leaving, he deletes a text message that Date sent him, while thinking "Rest in peace, my friend..."

Ran and Kogoro are being served by Amuro at the Poirot. Presumably in reponse to being asked about Conan's absence, Kogoro tells Amuro that Conan and the [[Detective Boys]] went camping in Gunma, and they will be sending pictures to Kogoro's computer later. When Sera calls Ran to ask about [[Vehicles_in_Detective_Conan#Volkswagen_Beetle|what sort of vehicle Agasa drives]], Amuro listens suspiciously. Late that night, Amuro furtively sneaks into the empty Mouri Detective Agency and logs onto Kogoro's website using the password Kogoro inadvertently told him [[Tooru_Amuro#Murder_at_Mouri_Detective_Agency_.28Manga:_796-800.29|in an earlier case]]. Instead of pictures from the Detective Boys' camping trip that he was expecting, he sees a video sent by someone (Mitsuhiko) that shows [[Shiho Miyano]] rescuing [[Ayumi]] from a cabin fire. He is shocked, and then he zooms in on her hand and notices she is wearing a pass ring for the Bell Tree Express mystery train. Amuro then notices that Kogoro's computer was being hacked [[Subaru Okiya|by someone]] and wonders who did it. Amuro passes over the information that Shiho appeared in Gunma and will be boarding the mystery train to Vermouth who will relay it to Gin.

Amuro appears on the train where he runs into Ran and the others. When asked what he is doing there, Amuro claims he won his tickets in an online auction and that he coincidentally met Kogoro in the dining cart where he learned of the case. When Masumi Sera runs off to find Scar Akai (Vermouth), Amuro is seen with his phone out contacting Vermouth that she was heading her way. He then comes when Conan (through Kogoro) starts his deduction on the murder culprit and reveals that three mirror plates were stuffed in a painting which was used for the locked room murder trick.

However, after the culprit confesses, Vermouth activated smoke canisters throughout the train in order to lure Ai Haibara (who supposedly transformed back to Shiho Miyano) out. After that is successful, Amuro introduces himself to her by calling himself Bourbon. He goes on to ask Shiho if she knows who he is to which she claims that he was a rival to her sister's love Dai Moroboshi (Shuichi Akai). Amuro starts to gloat saying that he knew Akai was FBI and that he couldn't believe that he was killed. He then says he decided to disguise as Akai in front of those close to him, although he asked Vermouth to disguise as him on the train. From that, he could only conclude that Akai really died. Putting Shiho at gunpoint, he tells her to go into the eighth cart so he can detach it with C4 explosives and bring her back to the organization. However, Shiho reveals that there are more C4 explosives in the train, when Amuro realizes that Vermouth put them there and that she plans to have Sherry killed. However, before he can do anything else, the real Akai (whom Amuro mistook as Vermouth) comes behind him and throws a grenade to detach the eighth cart. Amuro dodges the explosive relatively unscathed and the eighth cart explodes, but Shiho (who was really Kaitou Kid in disguise) is able to escape. Amuro then regroups with Vermouth and asks her to give him the files on before and after Akai's death. He thinks to himself that he'll have to start from square one, while Okiya, who is revealed to be Shuichi Akai watches on silently.

After the events of the Bell Tree express, Amuro went on sick leave which Conan took as a sign that he wasn't planning to return. However, to Conan's horror, Amuro had asked Kogoro if he and Sonoko wanted tennis lessons. He meets them at a tennis court and reveals he will be coming back to work at the Poirot next week. When a tennis racket accidentally slips from a player's hand, Amuro tries to warn Conan that it will hit him, but Conan is unable to dodge it in time. Conan is knocked unconscious, and Amuro rushes over and does everything to make sure Conan is assisted medically before a real doctor arrives to check Conan's condition. When Conan awakens, he finds out he was moved to the house of the person who hit him with the racket. After an apology, the group asks if Amuro, Sonoko, and the Mouris would like to play doubles tennis with them. Conan goes off to take a nap, but a loud noise wakes him up, and he discovers one of the players has been murdered and the body is locked in the room with him. Worried about the noise, Amuro picks the room's lock and tries to open the door, but Conan yells at him to stop as there is a beaten body next to it. When the police come to investigate, Amuro helps in the investigation. As Conan prepares to tranquilize Kogoro, Amuro, starting to get suspicious, bends down to examine Conan aiming his watch, which prevents Conan from using it. Conan is instead forced to give out hints to lead Kogoro and the police to the right answer. After the case is over, Amuro and Vermouth have a phone conversation. Vermouth asks why Amuro is still sticking around the Mouri Detective Agency when there is no need to because Sherry has been dealt with, and Amuro responds that he is interested by ''Sleeping Kogoro''. As he says this, he thinks of Conan instead, implying he suspects Conan is the real Sleeping Kogoro.

The Detective Boys become trapped in a refrigerated delivery truck with a cat, a dead body, and two murderous workers. Unable to call for help and out of other options, Conan decides to try to get a message to Amuro using the cat and a doctored receipt. The receipt initially blew away, but after realizing it was from Conan, Amuro tracks it down using a specialized app on his phone that can simulate wind conditions between the buildings in Beika city. Amuro locates the delivery truck in his repaired [[Vehicles_in_Detective_Conan#Amuro.27s_Mazda_RX-7|Mazda RX-7]]. The Black Organization agent decides to pretend like he came by chance instead of decoding the message on the receipt, and asks the two delivery men to make way because the street is narrow. When the kids see him and cry for help, Amuro, playing dumb, asks why they are in that truck. One of the murderers then orders Amuro to get in the truck by threatening the safety of the children. Amuro immediately punches the man's chest so hard that he coughs up blood. The remaining kidnapper backs down and Amuro ties him up and tells Conan to call the police. The children then reveal that they are outside of Agasa's house, which Amuro takes interest in. Haibara manages to stay behind the other kids and goes unnoticed by Amuro, and Okiya watches the unfolding scene from Shinichi's house's window.

===A Shrine to Remember (Manga: [[Volume 80|850]]-[[Volume 81|852]], Anime: [[Jodie's Memories and the Cherry Blossom Viewing Trap|734]])===
Suspecting that they may hold more valuable information for his investigation, Amuro follows Conan and Jodie to a sakura viewing scenic spot and attempts to approach them using someone else's appearance. He, with Vermouth's assistance, impersonates a random man named [[List of Black Organization related characters|Touhei Benzaki]], after having knocked him unconscious. Unknowing to Amuro, the real Benzaki has just been pickpocketed by a female thief.

In front of Conan and Jodie, Amuro claims to be the husband of the woman who taped Jodie back in the [[Detective Boys vs. Robber Group|bank robbery case]], where he was also one of the victims himself. He also says that he saw [[Scar Akai]] a few days back, to which both of them react strongly. Jodie immediately grabs Amuro's arm and questions him where did that happen, while he takes advantage of the chance and secretly plants an eavesdropping device inside the sleeve of her jacket. Suddenly, the female thief approaches them in an attempt to steal Jodie's money. She recognizes Benzaki's face and worries that he may figure out about her action, but Amuro pays no further attention to her. After that, he declares not remembering the place that he saw Scar Akai due to his cold; and during a conversation with Jodie, Amuro learns that [[Shuichi Akai]] likes drinking canned coffee and has dropped one back when the Organization was trying to [[Clash of Red and Black|attack]] Haido Central Hospital. Jodie also implies that she knows Scar Akai and the real Akai are not the same person. She hands to Amuro her phone number and asks him to contact her if he happens to recall anything.

Later, the female thief is murdered by one of her victims and Amuro (as Touhei Benzaki) unwillingly becomes one of the suspects. Through the eavesdropping device planted earlier, Amuro is able to listen to Jodie's conversations with Conan, where she mentions how Conan assisted the FBI in unmasking [[Rikumichi Kusuda]] as the spy from the Organization using his cellphone.

After the case is closed and the culprit gets arrested, Conan expresses his surprise at Benzaki not being able to recognize the thief the second time he met her, and wonders if he has bad eyesight. Amuro awkwardly evades the question by saying that he was there to buy a good-luck charm and not to see the flowers. Much to his luck, Vermouth, imitating the appearance of the woman who taped Jodie, walks towards them and answers that the good luck charm was for their baby. She pretends to have a [[wikipedia:Morning sickness|morning sickness]] in order to remove the eavesdropping device from Jodie and create an excuse for Amuro to leave the crime scene immediately. Inside the car, Amuro and Vermouth discuss about the case a little. She wonders whether he has got hold of something interesting from Jodie. Amuro states that he has learned a "surprising inside story", but won't share the details with Vermouth until he's got the proof. He only comments that Conan is a "terrifying man".

===Steamy Relations (Manga: [[Volume 81|856]])===
Conan suspects that the couple who approached him and Jodie was in fact Bourbon and Vermouth in disguise. While panicking, Conan realizes that the slip in Bourbon and Vermouth's story that allowed him to recognize their lie might have been intentional, so that he would realize the truth, panic, and then make a critical mistake. Conan calms down and calls Haibara to confirm whether she has felt any members of the Black Organization lately, not knowing that Amuro is watching him closely from a corner nearby.

Amuro observes Conan solving a case involving the ownership of a rare cat. He mentions to Azusa that Conan intentionally made up a fact so that he could do his test on the suspects; Conan is like a cat hiding his claws.

===Tea Poisoning Murder Case (Manga: [[Volume 84|888-890]])===

Bourbon goes to [[Haido Central Hospital]] looking for information about what happened to the spy [[Rikumichi Kusuda]]. Unfortunately, Conan lies badly when Amuro asks him if he knew Rikumichi, and Amuro learns that Conan really did know Rikumichi. Later, a child saying "Zero" prompts Amuro to remember a conversation during his childhood between him and a woman who looks like [[Elena Miyano]]. {{cquote|I told you not to do that, didn't I? While Date went on to become an officer, Amuro went somewhere else and fell out of contact with Date for unknown reasons. Date's last text to Amuro asked him where he was and chided Amuro to communicate once in a while. Amuro was shown visiting Date's grave, and likely left a toothpick out of respect for Date; Date used them habitually.

====Conan Edogawa====
Amuro seems to respect [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]]'s intelligence and also seems to look out for Conan as well. He wound up protecting Conan while disguised as [[Scar Akai]] at the Teito Bank, and as Amuro helped Conan get out of a kidnapping situation and doctored him when Conan took a racket to the head. Before knowing he was Bourbon, Conan was generally friendly towards Amuro. After the events of the Bell Tree Express, dealing with Amuro hanging around has become awkward for Conan especially because he worries for Ran's safety around a member of the Black Organization.

Although his mission concerning Sherry is over, Amuro has decided to investigate Conan. Amuro seems to know that Conan is using Mouri Kogoro as a puppet for his deductions. He also overheard a conversation between Jodie and Conan about how Conan helped the FBI fight the Black Organization while [[Kir]] was at Haido Central Hospital.

Kogoro is alternatively flattered by Amuro's praise and annoyed with his effusive personality. Overall Kogoro tends to treat Amuro flippantly despite being paid a handsome sum for the apprenticeship. When among members of the Black Organization, Amuro doesn't speak too badly of Kogoro despite Kogoro's obvious incompetence. Amuro is becoming more skilled at herding Kogoro through cases without having the older man realize that Amuro is a far superior detective and is manipulating him for information.

Bourbon despises [[Shuichi Akai]] for some unknown reason and believes he is the only one capable of killing him.<ref name=703p3/>

[[Vermouth]] and Bourbon keep close contact with one another, and seem to be closer to one another than, say, Bourbon and Gin. Bourbon specializes in intelligence gathering, so he likely belongs to the same [[Black_Organization#Organization_structure_and_divisions|reconnaissance division of the Black Organization]] as Vermouth. While it is still uncertain whether Bourbon is working directly under Vermouth, she seems to keep track of his actions during his missions at times,<ref>[[Detectives' Nocturne]]</ref> and he also often informs her about his discoveries or his future plans.<ref>[[Volume 78|File 818]] (Bourbon was said to have told Vermouth about Sherry's video); [[Volume 78|File 827]] (Bourbon tells Vermouth that he is now interested in "Sleeping Kogoro")</ref> Vermouth helped Bourbon create a [[Scar Akai|disguise]] that looked like Akai so he can investigate his enemy's death. Later, she somehow helped him approach [[Kogoro]] because he suspected that the detective was in contact with [[Sherry]]. [[Gin]] dislikes Bourbon's personality and finds him annoying for being secretive and always doing what he pleases. At the same time, Gin respects Bourbon's detective abilities. The two do not seem to be in contact with one another, as Gin has no idea what Bourbon is doing.

====Akemi Miyano====
[[Akemi Miyano]] and Amuro seem to have met at some point because Akemi told Shiho that Amuro has a rivalry with Akai. 

====Shiho Miyano====
Amuro doesn't seem to have any hostility towards [[Shiho Miyano|Shiho]] unlike other Black Organization members. He attempted to capture the person he thought was her alive instead of trying to kill her, regretting he might have to resort to violence to do so. Amuro says he had met Elena and Atsushi Miyano while they were alive. Amuro does not know Shiho is [[Ai Haibara|Ai]]. During a car chase in [[Detectives' Nocturne‎]], Shiho gets a strong feeling that member of the Black Organization was behind her, but she doesn't seem to pinpoint it to Amuro's pursuing [[Vehicles_in_Detective_Conan#Mazda_RX-7_2|Mazda FD RX-7]].

Amuro first meets [[Masumi Sera|Sera]] when Conan gets kidnapped. After both of them save Conan, he becomes very surprised to see her and wonders why is she here. Next day, he does not have any work. Amuro sees Sera again after the previous case, and notices that she looks similiar to Shuichi Akai. To confirm his theory, Amuro once again disguised himself as [[Scar Akai]] to gauge her reaction. Suddenly, Sera sees him in the crowd ahead and just like Jodie and Camel before her, Sera becomes just as shocked by his appearance. She runs after him, but he disappears before she can catch him. Ran wonders who Sera was chasing, but Sera replies she thought it was someone she knew. Sera silently appends in her mind that it would be impossible for the man she was chasing to be the person she thinks it was. While Amuro watches her from a little ahead, confirming his suspicion that Sera is related to Akai.

==Speculation==
Gin has revealed that Bourbon is as secretive as Vermouth. Bourbon has shown a friendly relationship with Vermouth but not with other members so far. Bourbon even hid some details from Conan. It is possible that Bourbon, as well as Kir, is a member who doesn´t like the Organization. Date himself revealed that Bourbon was the best man at the police academy, and that Bourbon was a gentleman like Takagi, too. Besides, at the end of Takagi´s Kidnapping Case, Bourbon refers to Date as "my friend", which means he had no option but to cut all means of contact with him for his own safety.

[[Vermouth]] is on the phone with [[Gin]]. Vermouth passes on the information that [[Bourbon]] came across, which that [[Sherry]] was hiding in Gunma and was going to travel on the Bell Tree Express, a train own by Suzuki family which hosts a special mystery onboard. Vermouth recalls her encounter with [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] and her promise to let Sherry go. She justifies the upcoming attack on Sherry as Bourbon's job and asks Gin not to interfere before the train reaches its destination.

At the Bell Tree Express, Conan, [[Ran Mouri|Ran]], [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]], [[Hiroshi Agasa|Agasa]], and the Detective Boys including [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]] prepare to board the train. Haibara still has a cold and has her cold mask on to hide her identity on the platform. The Detective Boys learn that the train usually runs only once a year, but this year will be different because [[Jirokichi Suzuki]] plans to run it a month later in another attempt to lure out [[Kaitou Kid]]. Sonoko also plans to place her love letter to Kid in the train car so he can receive it. Suddenly [[Masumi Sera]] shows up, and she says she is interested in the deduction quiz that will take place in the train. Haibara notices her and cover herself with her jacket's hood.

Next, the group witnesses the arrival of more passengers. Satoru Andou of 8C is the first to arrive, and he is traveling with a client's picture with a solid gold frame. Taisaku Noto (8A) and Mari Idenami (8E) show their familiarity with the conductor. Natsue Komino (8D), an old lady in a wheelchair, is accompanied by her maid Hiruka Sumitomo. And lastly, the angry Etsuto Murobashi appears (7B), and he accosts the conductor to demand his usual room in car 8. [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] (8B) introduces himself to the group after adjusting his mustache into the style of Hercule Poirot, explaining to him that his daughter, Ran, is a friend of the owner of the train, so he got a room on the luxury car. The passengers show shock reaction upon hearing his name.

In Agasa's room, 6B, Conan and the Detective Boys are chatting. Someone knocks on their door. They find a mystery card lying there, telling them they have received the role of detective that will investigate the murder which will occur in room 7B. The group (excluding Agasa) goes to 7B and witnesses a supposed murder incident. A masked man with hood shoots Etsuto Murobashi. They run after the murderer, but he gets away.

Later, they run into a train conductor, and learn that the quiz is suppose to happen an hour later. Conan, with a shocked expression, runs back to 7B only to found out that Ran, Sonoko, and Sera are there instead, and to complicate thing further, Ran's group tell them they're in 8B. It seems that after the murder happened, Car 7 disappear into thin air.

Meanwhile, Haibara, who's slightly behind Conan group, follows them half-heartly, show a strong reaction when Scar Akai leaves one of the rooms. But Scar Akai, who is dressed in a formal outfit, does not notice her and walks in the opposite direction. Haibara catches a glimpse of him.

Conan tries to convince the train conductor that something was wrong with the mystery murder that took place to no avail, nevertheless, they learn more about the nature of the train. Passengers can ring a bell which turns on a light above their door to summon the carriage attendant who sits in the hall. Additionally, each car has no indication of its number inside, only from outside can one tell the car number, a feature added by Jirokichi Suzuki to make the train more mysterious. Meanwhile, Haibara recalls her encounter with Scar Akai a moment ago. She thinks he has the "feeling" of Dai Moroboshi but doesn't understand why he has a burn mark.
Conan then recalls seeing Sera holding a card when they first ran into Ran's cabin. They go back to 7B and confront the girls with the correct conclusion: everything happened in 7B all along and the girls had lied that the room was 8B. Ran's party received the role of accomplices (assigned by the card that Sera held) They temporarily switched their room from 8B to 7B with Murobashi (who will wait in Ran's room, 8B) while the incident happened as part of the trick. As the Detective Boys followed Conan into the room, Sera notices that Haibara is with the group, and she says she wants to have a word with Haibara as well. Haibara starts to look scared, but the conversation is cut short because Scar Akai had been lurking outside the door. Sera demands to know who was there, but Scar Akai hides himself before Sera sees him.
After the trick is revealed, they return to Ran's original room, 8B, to inform Murobashi that their trick got exposed. They try to open the door, but it is chained shut and Murobashi is "sleeping" on the couch. Just then, Sera and Conan notice the gunpowder smell and break the chain link to open the door. They found Etsuto Murobashi was killed in a sealed room!

Conan and Sera explain the reason why Murobashi's case could not be a suicide. Conan then receives a message from an unknown sender and tells the Detective Boys to go back to their room with Ran, and shouts angrily when they don't comply. Haibara thinks about the "ominous feeling" inside her, as well as Conan's tense behavior, as she clinging to Ran and wonders what is going on. Immediately, Scar Akai walks past and glares at Haibara which frightens her. Tooru Amuro also appears right behind Scar Akai, and he explains to Ran how he got a train ticket from online bidding. This happens in the hallway, and the door nearest to the conversation is cracked open so that Subaru Okiya can watch them silently. Okiya is also accompanied by a woman resembling Vermouth with a hat pulled low over her face, who is seemingly busy with her cellphone. He says to her that, "Heaven is siding with us".
Jirokichi Suzuki, who waits at Nagoya station, orders the train to head there without stopping, so he can capture the murderer himself. Without any other choice, Kogoro, Conan, and Sera go to interrogate the passengers. Ran, Sonoko, Agasa, and the Detective Boys return to their room. Mitsuhiko brings up the subject of the woman who saved them from the fire in the last case. It is revealed that Mitsuhuko had sent a video recording of the woman to Kogoro, so Kogoro could find and thank her. Kogoro also thought of uploading the video to the internet. The woman is actually Shiho Miyano. This causes Haibara to panic and think her ominous feeling is due to Black Organzation members on the train.
Jirokichi calls a meeting with the Nagoya Police directing them to restore his and their honor by capturing the murderer post haste. Gin and Vodka watch the pep rally from behind a column on the Nagoya platform. Gin receives an text from Vermouth that Sherry is indeed boarded the train. Conan receives another unknown message. When Sera asks about and tries to look at the message, Conan quickly hides it and says he is just looking up the article on the past case that involves the victim and the passengers. Haibara also receives a message from an unknown address who claim to be Vermouth, asking, "Are you ready?" Haibara makes an excuse to go out. Ran notices her strange behavior and tries but fails to follow her. Alone, Haibara recalls the tape left by her mother, Elena Miyano, which talks about Haibara's parents starting a drug project that will require them to leave Shiho and Akemi behind, a project they call "Silver Bullet". Haibara then regrets that she misunderstood and that the drug was something that shouldn't have been made. She looks at the antidote to APTX 4869 that she is holding and decides to take it so that she can avoid involving those with her in the Black Organization's plot to capture or kill her. Before she can take it, Okiya confronts Haibara, commenting that he can predict the "sisters" without fail, and invites her to "enter our area". Haibara runs away from him instead, thinking she can't be killed while in a shrunken state.

==== Intersection ====
Conan is still investigating the case. He asks the suspects to be filmed while running. Sera leaves the group, intending to take the recordings to the Detective Boys to ask them which looks most like the masked suspect they chased earlier. On the way, Amuro notices her from a room and contacts someone with his cellphone. Scar Akai then walks past the mysterious woman who had come with Okiya. The woman says something to Scar Akai as he passes which startles him. But before he can follow her, Sera confronts him and asks, "Who are you?" Scar Akai smiles and tells Sera, "you haven't changed a bit." and he reveals his face to her. Sera, surprised and confused, responds with "Shuu-nii". (nii is Japanese suffix to call an older brother). She questions Scar Akai, stating that she heard that Akai had died. Sera and Scar Akai's confrontation ends abruptly when Scar Akai knocks Sera unconscious with a taser. Scar Akai then replies that Sera's response was the one he wanted to hear.

====Conclusion====
Amuro opens the large suitcase Andou brought with him and reveals it is a folding mirror that fits the door, with a blob of brown paint placed to hide the number of the door. Andou confesses to the crime.

====Motive====
Satoru Andou wanted retribution against Etsuto Murobashi because his wife was killed in the fire that Etsuto Murobashi set in order to steal valuable artworks from the mansion unnoticed. Initially Andou was going to force Murobashi to confess to the rest of the passengers, but Murobashi gleefully recalling his exciting escape from the fire enraged Andou.

While the deduction show still continues, Scar Akai enters the room belonging to the mysterious lady and throws her luggage out the window. The mysterious woman appears at the door and tells Scar Akai that the dress in the luggage was her favorite. The mysterious woman reveals herself to be [[Yukiko Kudo]] by naming Scar Akai as her old friend, "[[Sharon Vineyard|Sharon]]". Scar Akai rips his mask off and confirms Yukiko's deduction that he is none other than '''Vermouth'''.

Yukiko boasts to Vermouth that they got a hold of Vermouth's weak points, which is Vermouth that doesn't want anyone, including her partner on the train, to know that Conan and Haibara shrunk from the [[APTX 4869]]. Also, Vermouth had ordered software from CG programmer, [[Suguru Itakura]] that probably is related to the de-aging. Yukiko also showed her surprise that Vermouth had a fight with Itakura on the film set even though Sharon is known for her consideration for the staff. Vermouth responds to Yukiko's boast by saying she is the one who saw through Yukiko's team's plan. Vermouth deducts that they will try to fake Shiho Miyano's death so the Black Organization will let go of her for good. Vermouth explains then that Haibara can't be shown dead in her child body because it will cause the Detective Boys to panic and cry, which would bring the Black Organization's attention to them as Sherry's acquaintances. But if Haibara dies in her original body (played by Yukiko with makeup) and those who know her secret keep quiet about that, then the Detective Boys will be none the wiser. This scene will also result in heavily checking the passengers' belongings upon disembarkment and the Black Organization won't be able to take "Sherry's" body away to confirm her identity. Vermouth tells Yukiko that's not only Yukiko's luggage that she disposed of, but the bullet-proof vest with blood contraption that she hid in the basin closet as well. Yukiko say the two are even because even Vermouth sees though her plan but hasn't found Haibara. Vermouth reveals her trick to smoke Haibara out by detonating mutilple smoke bombs she placed earlier. (The bombs can be seen under the attendent's seat and also in the crime scene.)

At the deduction scene, Amuro is the first to notice the smoke, concludes the train is on fire and tells everyone to evacuate to the front of the train. The suspects, who are pyrophobics after surviving the mansion fire incident, become panicked and run. But Conan has to wake up Kogoro and urges Komino and Sumitomo of room D to hurry up and leave. Next, Vermouth correctly deduces that Haibara won't escape the fire to the front like everyone else, but will go in the opposite direction. Then Haibara is shown, now in her original body, running through the smoke past the victim's room (7B). A voice from behind states that Shiho is "as expected of Hell's Angel's daughter" that she is "very much alike". The voice belongs to '''Tooru Amuro''', who introduces himself to Shiho with his codename, [[Bourbon]].

Ran meets Kogoro and asks him where Haibara and Sera are (she assumes he'd know because they should pass his deduction site at some point), but Kogoro doesn't know. The train conductor tries to calm the passengers down from panic about the fire and tells them that the staff has yet to know the full details on the situation but will try to find out as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Vermouth continues to predict Sherry's movement that she will head to the back of train and be killed by the Organization in a silent fashion, rather than involving her friends. Conan then phones Yukiko to inform her that he can't find Haibara anywhere. Vermouth grabs Yukiko's phone away and impersonates her on the phone, telling Conan that Haibara probably escaped to the front like everyone else. Vermouth then receives a message from Bourbon confirming that Sherry is indeed in carriage 8. She then boasts to Yukiko that's it's her team that has the advantage.

In carriage 8, Bourbon tells Sherry he has met her parents and sister. Sherry says she has heard about him and knows he is a rival to Moroboshi Dai, [[Akemi]]'s lover. Bourbon says Dai was an FBI mole, as he suspected. When he heard that Dai/Akai was dead, he didn't believe it at first and enlists Vermouth's help to disguise himself as Akai, hanging around people who knew Akai to observe their reactions. However, this time he had Vermouth disguise as Akai in place of him. He comes to the conclusion that Akai is really dead.

At the Nagoya train station, Gin comments that the presence of the Jirokichi and Aichi police only make the explosion seem like an attempt on their lives, which covers the Black Orgainzation's intention. He then becomes surprised when Vodka informs him Vermouth was asking for more explosives for the plan, without telling him the purpose.

Bourbon, meanwhile, reveals his plan to take Sherry back to the Black Organization alive. He'll have her step inside the storage hold, knock her out, bomb the carriage link to seperate the storage hold form the rest of the train, then have a helicopter on his side take her away. Sherry refuses cooperate, stating that the storage hold is full of explosives, causing Bourbon to realize that Vermouth had altered the plan, wanting to kill Sherry from the start. Sherry steps away behind the door, while a mysterious figure appears behind Bourbon, obscured by smoke. Bourbon asks if the figure is Vermouth; the mysterious figure throws a hand grenade at him. Bourbon, surprised at this, asks who the person is. The figure is revealed to the readers (but not to Bourbon) that he has Shuichi Akai's face, without the scar, and dresses in an outfit like those of Okiya Subaru's, wearing Sera's hat. The grenade explodes, interruping their one-sided conversation. The storage hold is seperated from the train, and seconds later, it explodes, triggered by Vermouth's cellphone.

Vermouth explains to Yukiko she purposefully detonated the second bomb having heard the first one (which confirmed that the storage hold was separated from the train), making sure the explosion wouldn't cause the train to derail. Vermouth leaves the room while Yukiko begins frantically calling for Haibara, but she stops immediately after Vermouth is out of sight. Bourbon is left wondering who the figure was, but he seems to have an idea.

The train stops and the passengers disembark. Vermouth phones Gin about the situation, in which Bourbon claims he saw Sherry die in the explosion; Gin shows doubt about Sherry's survival. Gin points out that Vermouth wanted an explosion on the train so the train couldn't reach its destination at Nagoya (where Gin was waiting). Vermouth tells him they have to be questioned, along with other passengers and that he should be satisfied enough hearing that Sherry is dead. Vermouth hangs up and overhears the Detective Boys talk to Agasa (who has Haibara sleeping on his back) about how they found Haibara in room 7B. What happened was that Haibara got dizzy after taking the drug for her cold and decided to rest there. The room was empty due to it being a crime scene. Vermouth realizes Yukiko's team figured that Haibara would go there, so they waited for her there. Conan's phone call to Yukiko was just an act to keep Vermouth in Yukiko's room while they took Haibara to saftey. But Vermouth can't figure out who the woman who was supposedly killed in front of Bourbon is.

Vermouth then figured out Kaitou Kid's involvement after overhearing Sonoko voice her frustration to Ran that Kaitou Kid won't be able to board the train after the explosion. Vermouth also overheard Conan on the phone with Kaitou Kid, apologizing to him for draging him into a situation with guns and bombs. Kaitou Kid is shown leaving the exploding train on his hang-glider, the gadget Conan deduced Kid would hide in the storage room in the first place. It is revealed in a flashback that Conan had deduced Kid's identity. Kid disguised as '''Hiruka Sumitomo''' (the maid) and had his accomplice disguised as '''Natsue Komino''' (The wheelchair lady). His accomplice, heavily hinted to be [[Konosuke Jii]], can't mimic the voice of the lady, and relies on Kid to voice both of them. He just mouths the words (similar to when Conan solves case as Agasa). So when Conan has Sumitomo run in the corridor, Komino can't speak. Conan has the advantage of being short (looking from below) and saw through Jii's act easily, as well as their reaction about the fire, which wouldn't match the reaction of a pyrophobic.

Conan brings up the point that he purposefully overlooked Kid's actions to avoid being involved with the case as leverage to ask Kid for help. Conan shows him a video of Shiho Miyano and has Kid disguise as her. Conan tells him to be careful because guns and explosives are involved. Conan finishes his conversation by asking Kid to return his cellphone to the detective agency. Kid, annoyed, comments that Conan should be in debt to him for helping, rather than the other way around.

Because of the explosion, the train is brought to an early stop and the passengers disembark so they can be questioned by the police at the station. Konosuke Jii, Kaitou Kid's assistant, has removed his old woman disguise because he is unable to speak without Kid to assist him. Sera tries to figure out what's going on as Ran return her hat which she found in the corridor. Bourbon watches them silently and then asks Vermouth to give him the files from before and after Akai's death one more time. Vermouth agrees and Bourbon thinks he must reopen his investigation from "square one". Lastly, Subaru Okiya, watching Vermouth and Bourbon from behind, opens one of his eyes for the first time to reveal his Shuichi Akai-like eyes.

== Background ==
Vermouth's background is very mysterious. She was friends with [[Yukiko Kudo]] back when they were acting together under the name Sharon Vineyard and studied under [[Kuroba Toichi]], but she was even then secretly a member of the [[Black Organization]]. It is unknown for exactly how long she has been a member, but it is known that she had been secretly living at least two lives through the art of disguise: that of herself and her supposed daughter, Chris Vineyard. After staging Sharon Vineyard's death, she now lives as "Chris" and continues to serve the Black Organization. At one point, some twenty years ago, she killed the parents of a little girl who would become the FBI agent [[Jodie Starling]], one of her most bitter enemies.

Vermouth is [[Anokata|the boss]]’s favorite which grants her some independence. She also appears not to age or have de-aged over a period of twenty years between when she killed Jodie's parents and her current appearance. She doesn’t seem to like the research that Ai and her parents engaged in, calling it “foolish". <ref>[[Volume 42#File 434 - Rotten Apple|Volume 42, File 434: "Rotten Apple"]]</ref>

Vermouth entered the storyline some time after [[Ai Haibara|Shiho Miyano/Sherry/Ai Haibara]]'s mysterious flight from the Organization. Her main objective was to track down and eliminate the 'traitor', and for that purpose she assumed the identity of doctor [[Tomoaki Araide]]. But although she managed to discover Shiho's reversion into a child, she did not succeed in killing her, as she met [[Conan Edogawa]], who was able to discover and thwart her plans. She also encountered the FBI during this process.

Vermouth has great personal interest in Conan, constantly calling him "[[Silver Bullet]]". Since it has been revealed that she knows about Ai and Kudo's reversion to their child forms, she seems to know the shrinking effect the drug can have, but for reasons yet unrevealed she keeps this knowledge secret from the rest of the Organization.

== Personality ==
Although she follows orders from [[Anokata|the boss]] and [[Gin]] when he is charge of missions, Vermouth often acts according to her own agenda and whims, even when it runs contrary to the [[Black Organization]]'s best interests. She is secretive and manipulative, even towards other Organization members. Vermouth is confident in her abilities, is very bold, and an expert at manipulating situations to her advantage: traits which allow her to single-handedly weave complex plots and take the upper hand even while she is being monitored by enemies. She is intelligent and insightful, correctly suspecting the allegiance of Kir, but she was successfully outwitted by [[Conan]] and forced by [[Shuichi Akai]] to retreat.

Vermouth's personality is contradictory at times. On one hand, she is a cruel and ruthless agent who will blackmail an unwilling man to commit murder by threatening him and his family just to provide a distraction and happily tell [[Jodie Starling|an FBI agent]] she should smile because she will see her dead father again in heaven. On the other hand, she risks her life several times to protect Conan, [[Ran]], and [[Kogoro]], and her friendly behavior while in disguise as Tomoaki Araide left the real Araide wondering if Vermouth is really a bad person. This inconsistency may reflect an underlying conflict of conscience after [[Shinichi]] and Ran saved her life during the events of the [[Vermouth_timeline#Golden_Apple_Case_.28Manga:_350-354_Anime:_286-288.29|Golden Apple case]].

At this point, Vermouth's motives are very mysterious. She knows about Conan being Shinichi, as well as that Haibara is Sherry, yet she has kept this information a secret from the rest of the Organization. It is frequently implied that Vermouth does not approve with the Organization's plans and is willing to quit, but fears the consequences of doing so openly. She is frequently shown to hold hopes that Conan is the 'silver bullet' that will eventually stop the Organization. Vermouth frequently utilizes latex masks. Although she may have known how to disguise prior to meeting [[Toichi Kuroba]], she studied disguise under him. Vermouth specializes in reconnaissance and infiltration, and has been shown to work very swiftly yet cautiously to rapidly acquire information. Her confidence and skill in disguise and imitation means she can execute bold plans that put her in very close contact with her targets and she can advance her plot even when they are suspicious of her. Without the aid of the other organization members, Vermouth successfully snuck into the [[Tokyo Metropolitan Police|Tokyo Metropolitan Police headquarters]] in order to steal the records of [[Kogoro Mouri]]'s cases. She later returned them when presumably the surveillance would be even higher after the police noticed the files were missing. She then single-handedly staked out the [[FBI]] who were lured out into watching Kogoro Mouri and uncovered their numbers, addresses, and ways to contact them.

===Stamina===
Vermouth is quite strong and has developed a high pain tolerance. While she was disguised as a serial killer in New York City, Vermouth athletically vaults up from a dead hanging positioning over the railing of the stairwell to higher ground despite being shot in the side. She also shoots herself in the leg in order to avoid the effects of sleeping gas, and was able to limp to a phone booth on that shot leg, with several broken ribs caused by Akai, and with a deep scratch on her right shoulder when Jodie shot at her.

===Shooting===
As Vermouth pulled away in Jodie's car with broken ribs after her flak jacket absorbed a close range shotgun blast, she managed to aim a handgun backwards with her left hand using the side mirror while driving a car she wasn't used to and shoot Araide's car's gas tank standing 100 yards away, causing it to explode. Akai is impressed she managed that difficult shot with her battered body. Earlier however, she failed to draw fast enough to shoot Jodie or Akai; in the first case, the gun was shot out of her hand, in the second, Akai fired first.

In Movie 13: [[The Raven Chaser]], Vermouth disguises as a brown haired policeman in a dark suit with glasses to check on Irish's progress and the integrity of his disguise during the conference. After texting the boss outside the bathroom, she exits the building and leaves in Gin's Porsche 356A.

She is seen again disguising as a young brown-haired woman when trying to come closer to the believed serial killer but leaves as soon as she realizes he is not. [[Conan]] tracks her down in the underground parking lot and makes her reveal herself. She gives Conan essential information about an organization member named [[Irish]] and wishes him good luck when leaving.
It is later revealed that she was the one who supervised the captured [[Matsumoto]] and provided him with comestibles. When the police finds out about Matsumoto's remains, she informs [[Gin]] about it and leaves.
Finally, she is briefly seen driving along the Highway when Gin's helicopter crashes, complimenting Conan's accomplishments and calling him again a "silver bullet".

In order to camouflage the fact that Sharon Vineyard and Chris Vineyard are the same person, Vermouth concocted personal histories for her real life cover roles in order to make them seem like different people. When Sharon and Chris Vineyard were revealed to be one and the same, at least part of the stated Vineyard family history was revealed to be a lie. It is unknown how much of the remainder is truthful, based on the truth, or outright fabrication because the primary source of the information is Vermouth herself who may have more to hide.

Little is known of Sharon Vineyard's mother and father. Jodie's father in the FBI was secretly investigating Vermouth twenty years before the current storyline.<ref name="f433" /> That is too young for Chris Vineyard to be in disguise as she is only 29 currently and would be 9 at the time. After Vermouth killed Jodie's father she inadvertently handled Jodie’s father’s glasses barehanded which had fallen off of him and got her fingerprints on them. Unexpectedly, little Jodie came in and saw Vermouth holding the glasses. When Vermouth left after setting the house on fire, she didn't anticipate that Jodie left to get juice, taking her father’s glasses with her and thus preserving her fingerprint. After she discovered Jodie's corpse was not found in the house, Vermouth looked for the girl desperately in order to rectify her mistake, but Jodie had since been put into witness protection.

Jodie suspected Chris Vineyard of being Vermouth when she saw her at Sharon’s funeral. She somehow determined Chris Vineyard’s prints matched those of the glasses. Chris would have been too young to commit a crime 20 years ago, so later Jodie obtained Sharon’s fingerprints and matched those as well. All three matched, proving to Jodie that the three people were one and the same.

He looks into [[Chris Vineyard]] and realizes that she is able to disguise herself and may be pretending to be someone close to him. [[Kogoro Mouri]]’s case records were stolen from the police department. Conan realizes [[Tomoaki Araide]] is Vermouth because Vermouth needed the files to testify at the trial properly while in disguise.

Conan first suspects there is another Black Organization member who was present at the mourning party after considering how Pisco obtained another purple handkerchief which enabled him to leave the investigation. Conan didn't realize that this Black Organization member might be after him or Haibara until after the bus jack case when [[Haibara]] tells Conan there was definitely someone from the Organization on the bus. Conan's idea that Pisco had an accomplice among the other suspects has fully solidified. He has noticed one of the suspects who had a purple handkerchief, [[Chris Vineyard]], hasn't appeared in public since that case, thus Conan believes Chris is the Black Organization accomplice. At this point, Conan is still uncertain of Araide, Jodie, and Akai's allegiances. By the time Conan gets the letter from Vermouth inviting him the off-season Halloween mystery party, he has realized that Vermouth is most likely Dr. Araide because Jodie wasn't in Mouri's case files when they were stolen, while Araide was. Vermouth needed the files to give proper testimony at the trial and to act correctly as Araide. The murder was masterminded by Yoshiteru Araide's second wife, Yoko Araide. She caused a blackout to occur while she was supposedly on the phone, and during the ensuing darkness, snuck to the bathroom and put an electric shaver in the bathtub. She then crept back and asked the housemaid [[Hikaru Yasumoto]] to flip the circuit breaker, causing Yoshiteru Araide to be electrocuted. "Sleeping Kogoro", the police, and the criminal decided to create a false investigation record to protect the conscience of the maid Hikaru. Jodie used this to her advantage and forced Vermouth to reveal that she didn't know the true sequence of events.<ref name="f432p11">[[Volume 42#File 432 - Shinichi Kudo Appears!?|Volume 42, File 432, page 11: "Shinichi Kudo Appears!?"]]</ref>

At the same time Shinichi and Ran were in New York City, Vermouth disguised as a silver-haired serial killer in order to lure out [[Shuichi Akai]]. Later, Conan suspected the serial killer may have been someone in disguise when he heard that the serial killer’s blood and fingerprints on the stair rails were cleaned up, an action uncharacteristic for someone intending to commit suicide. Sharon was the only person Conan knew about in the local area with high disguise abilities, so suspicion naturally fell onto her.

After Vermouth disguised as Araide, Conan deduced from the way Vermouth was behaving that she was trying to avoid involving Conan in her plan and was only targeting Haibara. Vermouth as Dr. Araide risked her life to protect Conan in the bus jack case and helped him out in Sato's matchup case. When Conan gets the letter from Vermouth inviting him the off-season Halloween mystery party, he realizes that Vermouth's intentions are to only trap Haibara and that Vermouth is trying to lure Conan to the party to avoid catching him up in her plan.

Conan who didn't exist a year ago has no reason to be “protected” by Vermouth. Conan deduces Vermouth must know his identity as Shinichi and the reason for her “protection” must have to do with something he did as Shinichi. However, Sharon was the only one Shinichi had a connection with, and she is apparently dead. Sharon’s daughter Chris has never met Shinichi and is estranged from Sharon Vineyard so she alone doesn't have an adequate motive to protect Shinichi. Also, it wouldn’t make sense for Chris Vineyard, who isn’t a family friend like Sharon, to be able to recognize Shinichi as Conan; presumably Vermouth saw young Shinichi with Yukiko when she was Sharon.

All these clues come together when Conan makes the assumption that Sharon Vineyard is Chris Vineyard who disguised as the silver haired serial killer in New York and that she is grateful for being rescued by [[Shinichi]] and [[Ran]].<ref name="f429p9">[[Volume 42#File 429 - The Full Moon and the Trap at the Banquet|Volume 42, File 429, page 9: "The Full Moon and the Trap at the Banquet"]]. Vermouth's age is unknown because her history is largely unclear. We know she has lived as Chris who is 29, and as Sharon whose age is unknown. Her face when she killed Jodie's father 20 years was youthful, suggesting she is currently at least 40 years old as long as no deaging has occurred.

===Vermouth did not use [[APTX 4869]]===
A popular theory on Vermouth's non-aging is that she used [[APTX 4869]] to achieve her youthfulness since this is the only known substance capable of producing such an effect ([[Silver Bullet]]'s effects are unknown at this point). However, at present there are things that contradict such a notion. Vermouth would have faced near certain death if she had used APTX 4869.<ref name=V2/> Before Vermouth discovered Haibara and Conan, the known members of the Black Organization (besides Sherry) only knew about APTX 4869's lethal effects,<ref>Sherry did not report the results that several of her mice shrank to the greater organization because they have not been able to figure out how Shiho managed to escape the locked room. If Shiho had reported her data, the Organization would have known that shrinking was a possible side effect of APTX 4869 and would have figured out how she escaped and begun looking for a child. Furthermore, if Shiho had reported to the Organization that APTX 4869 had the possibility of leaving the victim alive, the Boss and/or Shiho's superiors would not have permitted the drug in situations where the victim, if surviving, could escape as in Shinichi's case.</ref> and it was considered deadly enough that Sherry's superiors employed it as an untraceable murder weapon.<ref name=V2>Gin described APTX 4869 as a poison before using it on Shinichi, "We'll use this, the new poison the Organization developed. Don't screw up, Pisco! If there is any complication, you can use the 'experimental drug' [APTX 4869]" (V24-7 pg 17) If the boss, who has been stated to be cautious to a fault, knew about the risk that someone might survive APTX 4869, he would not let his subordinates use the drug without letting them know there was a chance it would leave people alive because, if someone escaped, they could talk to the police or someone else and leak the secret of the Black Organization's existence. If Gin knew it failed to work some of the time, he would have never left Shinichi alone while it acted, and would have also gone looking for him after his body disappeared if that was the case. Even Shiho Miyano who was aware APTX 4869 could rarely cause de-aging expected it to kill her. "I thought that since I was going to get killed anyways, I would take the APTX 4869 which I secretly held. To my luck, the drug that I took thinking it would kill me shrunk by body..." (V18-9 pg 8) Finally, Shiho makes it clear the Organization is not simply trying APTX 4869 out on victims, they are actively using it to kill. "If I reported your condition to the Organization, it's very likely you would have been terminated before I could do something useful." (V18-9 pg 7) Even though Shinichi was an "interesting specimen" (V18-9 pg 7), if the Org was field testing, they would try to capture Shinichi alive for study. Shiho was still project manager when use on humans began and when Shinichi was poisoned, so she would know the Organization's protocol should someone fail to die.</ref> However, given that Vermouth has said depressing things over the course of the series,<ref>"No angel has smiled upon me", "My life represents a series of misfortunes" (V35-1 pg 2)</ref> it is possible Vermouth took APTX 4869 hoping to commit suicide, but she de-aged instead, similar to Haibara's situation<ref>"I thought that since I was going to get killed anyways, I would take the APTX 4869 which I secretly held. It is possible that Atsushi and Elena Miyano had something to do with Vermouth's de-aging/non-aging (e.g. Vermouth was their guinea pig). This might explain the personal animosity Vermouth feels towards the Miyanos and why she calls their APTX experiment foolish.

Vermouth's de-aging/non-aging may be a result of a project older than Shiho's APTX 4869, like her parents' [[Silver Bullet]], or something else even older than that. Later, Yukiko sadly accepts Conan's deduction that Sharon and Chris are the same person and a member of the Black Organization.

Shiho fears Vermouth more than most other members except perhaps Gin. Shiho was Vermouth's target, but Vermouth gave up on her after Conan's intervention. Vermouth was extremely well liked and kind to students and patients while disguised as [[Tomoaki Araide]], so when the real Araide wonders if Vermouth is really a bad person, Jodie takes offense and angrily yells at him, "How can someone be a good person if she kills people with a smile!?"<ref>Manga Volume 45, File 2, pg 18: "The truth behind the remaining desk"</ref>

20 years before the current timeline, Vermouth goes to the house of Jodie's father, an FBI agent, and kills him. An eight to nine year old [[Jodie Starling]] walks in while Vermouth was trying to put his glasses back on his body and thinks her father is asleep. Vermouth tells her that she should wait for her father to wake up. When the girl asks her who is she, Vermouth replies "A secret makes a woman, woman". Vermouth burns the house down, thinking Jodie stayed behind and was killed as well. However, the girl goes out of the house to buy orange juice for her father, narrowly escaping death. She also takes her father's glasses with her, preserving the fingerprints Vermouth left on them. When Vermouth finds out Jodie's body was not in the house, she looks for her to kill her, but the FBI enrolled her in witness protection. Jodie later becomes an FBI agent in order to find her father's killer.

Vermouth and [[Shuichi Akai|Akai]] don't have much personal animosity for each other in particular despite the fact that they have been hunting one another for some time. Vermouth regards Akai as a "silver bullet": someone with the potential to destroy the Black Organization. In accordance with this assessment, she attacks him immediately and preferentially in the confrontation with her at the docks. Akai seems to hit a nerve when he called her a rotten apple, wilted on the inside.

Generally, Vermouth tries to protect Shinichi when she is able to, even if it means risking her own life. Although Shinichi found out later that he unknowingly rescued Vermouth in New York City and that Vermouth was a friend of Yukiko's, Shinichi doesn't understand why Vermouth would make the promise to give up on hunting Sherry and not inform the Black Organization about Haibara and himself.

After Ran saved Vermouth's life in New York City, Vermouth nicknames [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] "Angel". Shiho's English mother, [[Elena Miyano]], and Japanese father, [[Atsushi Miyano]], were both important researchers for the Black Organization. They both died in what other members of the Black Organization described as an accident while Shiho was very young.

While Akemi lived a normal life, Shiho was sent to America as a small child to go to school and was groomed to finish her parents' research on [[APTX 4869]].<ref> File 384-386 Volume 38 File 2-4</ref>. Most of her time in America was lonely; she ate lunch alone, and was otherwise isolated from peers for being different. Despite the difficult social situation, Shiho was an academic prodigy, and by the age of thirteen she was working as a highly ranked scientist for the Black Organization.<ref>Akai started infiltrating the Black Organization five years ago. He did so by becoming Akemi’s girlfriend in order to get close to Shiho and use her influence to get in. (Manga Volume 58, File 2, pg 9: "Akai's Past") According to the FBI’s description, Shiho was “a scientist for them” at the time. Furthermore this took place in Japan since everyone was speaking Japanese, Akemi lived in Japan, and the FBI bust two years prior to the current timeline was in Japan (607 pg 8). If Shiho is 18 now, she would be 13 at the time Akai started infiltrating the Black Organization and she was already a scientist for them at this point and high ranked.</ref> Her codename in the Black Organization is "Sherry", after the alcoholic drink.

Shiho was about 18 years old when she developed the most current incarnation of the experimental test compound [[APTX 4869]]. Although it was not her intended purpose<ref>Manga Volume 18, File 9, page 9</ref>, she discovered that it could be used as a poison to kill without leaving any traces of itself in a body. While researching its effects, Shiho noticed that one of her lab mice had become younger after being given the drug instead of dying. Meanwhile, the Black Organization started using APTX 4869 to commit untraceable murders.

After the death of her sister at the hands of [[Gin]], she later escaped the Black Organization after she took APTX 4869 to commit suicide but shrank instead to elementary school child age. Initially, Shiho was very cynical, which was reflected in her valuing her own security above idealistic principles of justice. She also did not wish to become close to others. It was only by repeatedly approaching her that the [[Detective Boys]] and [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] finally become her friends. Shiho was also untrusting of others in general, and preferred to put on an expressionless, cold mask while bottling up her pain and sadness. Shiho's views about death have been complex and at times contradictory. She was prepared to likely kill [[Ki'ichiro Numabuchi]] with APTX 4869 as part of her tests, but on the other hand, she detested the Black Organization's use of APTX as a killing tool and Conan labeling her as a murderer.

==Plot overview==
===Prior to Escape===
After being orphaned by the death of [[Atsushi Miyano|her]] [[Elena Miyano|parents]] at a young age, Shiho was groomed to take over their [[APTX 4869]] research project. She was educated overseas in America before returning to Japan at or before she was 13. She became a high ranking member, codenamed Sherry, in the Black Organization's internal drug development division.<ref>Conan Drill page 237</ref> When she was about 13,<ref>Five years before present timeline</ref> undercover [[FBI]] agent [[Shuichi Akai]] began dating Shiho's sister [[Akemi Miyano]] in order to use Shiho's rank to his advantage while infiltrating the Black Organization.

During the 5+ years Shiho worked in the Black Organization lab, Akemi was Shiho's lifeline to normalcy and her primary emotional support within the darkness of the Black Organization. Akemi would arrange meetings with Shiho in restaurants and such to chat about current happenings, and Shiho would sometimes tell Akemi about her Black Organization activities, although it appears she did not go into much detail.<ref name="Akemi Meeting">Volume 18, File 10, Page 15</ref> Akemi would also send Shiho floppies of pictures of her travels and friends which Shiho would quickly look at. During this time, Shiho accidentally mixed up the disks and mailed a disk of extremely sensitive information back to Akemi by mistake. The disk eventually would up in the hands of Akemi's professor friend, Masami Hirota.

Shiho received the data about him, but he managed to escape the Black Organization before she could test it on him. Shiho fled the Black Organization herself soon after, so her superiors never found a substitute test subject. [[Shinichi Kudo]] wound up being the first "guinea pig" of APTX 4869 according to [[Gin]], who decided to use the newly approved poison to kill him after Shinichi witnessed a Black Organization transaction.

Unaware of the APTX 4869's rare deaging side effect when they used it on Shinichi Kudo, the Black Organization ordered a search for him because his body had not been found. As the creator of the drug, Shiho was part of the team who searched Shinichi's house twice to confirm his death. She began to suspect Shinichi's transformation when she noticed his clothes from primary school had disappeared between the first and second searches. Sometime earlier, one mouse dosed with APTX 4869 had become younger, so she suspected something similar had happened to Shinichi. Shiho did not want the Black Organization to kill such an interesting "test subject" before she could examine him, so Shiho confirmed Shinichi as deceased so the organization would not look into the matter further. Shiho later met with Akemi and told her that she went to Kudo's house in Beika city to "look after something".<ref name="Akemi Meeting"/>

==== Akemi's robbery plan and death ====

Meanwhile, Akemi Miyano wished that she and Shiho could leave the Black Organization. The Black Organization itself was in an awkward position as Akemi had been in love with the FBI spy, Shuichi Akai, whose true allegiance had since been uncovered when Shiho was about 16.<ref>Two years before present timeline</ref> The Black Organization could not simply kill Akemi because that would jeopardize the loyalty of Shiho, who was valuable to the Black Organization's research efforts. Exasperated, the Black Organization came up with a trap for Akemi; they told her that she could leave the Black Organization with Shiho if she would rob 10 billion yen from a bank for them. The Black Organization expected Akemi to fail, which would give them the excuse to eliminate her while keeping Shiho loyal; however Akemi, with a team of robbers, succeeded in obtaining the money.

In the event of her success, the Black Organization had designed the second part of the robbery plan so that Akemi's assistants would kill each other or be unintentionally killed by the unwitting Akemi. However one accomplice had fled, forcing Akemi to use detective [[Kogoro Mouri]] to find him. After her first meeting with Kogoro, Akemi met with Shiho again.<ref name="Akemi Meeting"/> Akemi had not told Shiho about the robbery plan, but it seems that Shiho's detection of the Black Organization aura from Akemi<ref>Mitsuhiko's Mystifying Forest case (some translations do not have this line correct)</ref> and gossip had made Shiho aware that Akemi had done something dangerous. Without telling Shiho about the robbery, Akemi redirected the conversation to [[Conan Edogawa]], whom Akemi said was brilliant and had the composure of an adult. This conversation likely helped Shiho deduce Conan's identity as the missing Shinichi.

Later, after all the accomplices were killed, Akemi planned to hand access to the money over to Gin and Vodka at the shipyard.<ref>This is based on the manga version of this case. The anime alters this scene</ref> Instead, Gin murdered Akemi. A newspaper took a photo of the crime scene that included Conan looking downcast. Shiho later identified Conan using it.

Shiho already resented the Black Organization for using the incomplete APTX 4869 for killing purposes, but the news of Akemi's death was the final straw that induced Shiho to boycott her research until she received an official explanation for why her sister was killed. The Black Organization refused, and faced with the possibility that Shiho could defect or do something else drastic in revenge, decided to cut their loses by executing Shiho.

===Escape from the Black Organization===
Awaiting her execution, Shiho was handcuffed to a wall in a sealed room that also featured a garbage chute too small for an adult to fit in. With no other way out, she took a pill of APTX 4869 she had pocketed to commit suicide before she could be killed, but instead she shrank into a six- or seven-year-old girl. In her new, smaller body, she slipped her hand free of the cuff and used the garbage chute to escape the sealed room. She then attempted to reach Shinichi Kudo's house, hoping he might be able to help her. Exhausted, she collapsed in front of Kudo's house, where she was found by [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]], who eventually adopted her.<ref>Manga Chapter 179: The Girl Made Of Lies</ref> After this, Shiho Miyano took up the role of Ai Haibara. In [[Reunion with the Black Organization]], Conan and Haibara find Gin's [[Cars#Porsche_356A|Porsche]] by chance. Conan plants a tracker and transmitter in the parked car and eavesdrops on Gin and Vodka when they return. Gin calls an agent named [[Pisco]] and discusses part of a plan to kill someone at a mourning party that will take place at the [[Haido City Hotel]]. Gin tells Pisco he can use the [[APTX 4869|"experimental detective"]] if needed. Gin then finds the tracker and destroys it, believing Sherry placed it there because he also found a single red hair that Haibara inadvertently lost while Conan was planting the bugs. Gin then warns Pisco about Sherry. Although initially reluctant, after hearing Pisco has APTX, Haibara decides to go to the party to try to obtain a sample. Pisco, who knew Shiho as a child, recognizes her as Haibara, kidnaps her using chloroform, and confines her in a wine storage room in another part of the hotel. He doesn't get the opportunity to tell anyone about his discovery because the police are rounding up suspects for the mourning party murder and he is one of them.

After Haibara wakes up, Conan tells Haibara to drink some [[baijiu]] in order to escape. While waiting for the change to occur, she copies some APTX data from a computer Pisco left behind onto a floppy disk. Haibara turns back into Shiho and changes into some leftover janitor clothes that Pisco left behind in the room as part of his disguise. Gin and Vodka break into the storage room looking for Pisco, but Shiho manages to hide herself just before they arrive by bracing her body in the chimney. Unfortunately, Gin hears her breathing and finds another one of her hairs. Instead of simply shooting her in the chimney, however, he goes to the roof to wait for her to finish climbing.

After exchanging some banter, Gin demands to know how Shiho escaped from the locked chamber room. Shiho remains silent, so Gin shoots her several more times non-fatally, hoping she will crack. Eventually, Gin and Vodka realize she won't talk, so Gin prepares to kill her. Conan meanwhile has arrived and darts Gin in the back with his tranquilizer watch. Using the voice changer to disguise his voice, Conan orders her to get back to the chimney. Vodka shoots Shiho just as she reaches the chimney, so Shiho falls down awkwardly.

In the fireplace, Shiho reverts back into Ai Haibara while Pisco watches. He congratulates her for having made so much progress on the APTX, whose effects he has just witnessed. He tells Shiho he was a close friend of the Miyanos while they were still alive, and they told him much about the drug they were developing. He knew her from when she was a baby, even though Shiho does not remember him. Pisco prepares to shoot her, but Conan stops him by distracting him at the last minute. Conan manages to trick Pisco into setting himself and the room on fire, and carries Haibara out of the room on his back before Pisco can find them again. Gin comes down the chimney and confronts Pisco. Before Pisco is able to tell Gin the truth about Shiho and APTX 4869, Gin kills Pisco for accidentally getting his picture taken in the act of murder during the mourning party.

Conan sneaks Haibara to Agasa's beetle and gives her his jacket. Haibara then lies to Conan about losing the disk of APTX data she copied.<ref>The bloody disk is on the bottom of the stack shown in Volume 25 File 9 (Chapter 251), Page 8 and Episode 188.</ref> Worried that the organization knows that she has shrunk, Haibara tells Conan she must leave the city. Agasa tells Haibara that her identity is safe because he eavesdropped on the conversation when Gin killed Pisco by using the tracking glasses Shiho dropped when she fell down the chimney.

On a camping trip in Gunma, the Detective Boys run across a murderer burying a body and are chased to a cabin in the woods where the killer and the victim had been staying. The murderer bars the door and sets the cabin alight with the children inside. The strength of the children is not enough to open the door and Ayumi passes out from the smoke. With Conan nowhere nearby, Haibara takes a temporary [[Antidote (Prototype)|antidote]], borrows the victim's clothing, and uses the murder weapon - an axe - to break down the door. Mitsuhiko, not realizing who she is, films her carrying Ayumi from the burning cabin and mails the video to Kogoro hoping he would find their savior. Bourbon logs into Kogoro's computer and sees the video, precipitating the events on the Bell Tree Express.

To counter [[Tooru Amuro|Bourbon]] and [[Vermouth]]'s plan to capture or kill Shiho aboard the Bell Tree Express, Conan, with [[Subaru Okiya]] and [[Yukiko Kudo]]'s help, devised a plan to keep Haibara hidden and force the ignorant [[Kaitou Kid]], only present to scout ahead for a future heist, to disguise as Shiho and confront Bourbon. Bourbon wound up confronting "Shiho" and fell for the thief's disguise because Haibara told Kaitou Kid what to say. In the confusion that followed, Subaru Okiya separated the rearmost carriage from the train, which then blew up because Vermouth had planted explosives there intending to kill Shiho to prevent Bourbon from capturing her alive. Kaitou Kid escaped in the nick of time, but the rest of the Black Organization, sans Vermouth, now believe Shiho Miyano is dead.

After the death of Shiho's parents, Akemi became Shiho's only true ally within the darkness of the Black Organization. Through direct conversation and mail, Akemi showed Shiho the normal side of life that Shiho was unable to experience. Akemi would often admonish Shiho gently to do things normal for her age, such as encouraging her to get a boyfriend. Akemi's death had enough emotional impact to convince Shiho to betray the Black Organization by boycotting her research, even though she knew the act of defiance would likely result in her own death. Shiho greatly misses Akemi. In the non-canon [[Movie 5]], Shiho's desire to hear Akemi's voice again, even if only a message on a phone answering machine, was used by Gin and Vodka to nearly pinpoint Shiho's location.

====Elena Miyano====
Elena died when Shiho was young, so Shiho doesn't remember much of her. Elena left tapes for Shiho for each of her birthdays. Some of the messages are serious and mysterious, but others are more lighthearted and reveal things about Elena's past. It is clear from the tapes Elena loved Shiho very much, and Shiho misses her mother in turn and takes comfort in hearing her voice.

[[Gin]] and [[Shiho Miyano]] were both members of the Black Organization until Shiho escaped after he killed her sister [[Akemi Miyano]]. Gin seems especially interested in hunting for the escaped Shiho while she is unusually terrified of him.

==Speculation==
It is strange that Gin and Shiho seem to know a lot about one another despite being in [[Black Organization#Organization structure and divisions|entirely different divisions of the Organization]]. They clearly have a connection outside of their professions to account for knowing each other so well.

On his part, Gin clearly knows Shiho's personality very well as he can anticipate her movements<ref>The Pisco case. Gin's predictions were good except for Conan's involvement.</ref> despite having rather different lines of work. Gin can identify her from a single hair with conviction. 
As for Shiho, she hardly knew most of the other agents in non-science related positions. She hadn't met [[Pisco]] since she was a baby, she had only heard of [[Korn]] and [[Chianti]], and hadn't heard of [[Kir]]. Conan never asked about [[Tequila]]. Shiho knows [[Vermouth]] despite not being in science because Vermouth likely had a connection with [[Atsushi Miyano|Atsushi]] and [[Elena Miyano]] and their research because Vermouth doesn't seem to age. Gin is on the assassination side of things, so it is anomalous how well she seems to know him given how she doesn't know much about anyone else outside of the research branch.

The events of the Renunion with the Black Organization case<ref>Manga Volume 24, Files 7-11</ref> open the possibility that the reason they know each other so well is because Gin and Shiho had a romantic mutual relationship. In Haibara's dream, Gin describes their meeting as a reunion: "This is the end of your wanton sporting... Now, wake up from your dream... Shouldn't we celebrate our reunion with your favorite color scarlet... right, Sherry?"<ref name=238p1-3>Manga Volume 24, File 7, pgs 1-3: "A Pack of Lies"</ref> Haibara uncharacteristically yells "Don't touch me!"<ref name=238p7>Manga Volume 24, File 7, pg 7: "A Pack of Lies"</ref> when Ayumi places her hand on Haibara's arm, snapping her out remembering her dream. Later, the real life Gin thinks of her naked once, looking forward to their meeting with one another. Cases later, in the Mystery Train case, he does so again.<ref name=238p18>Manga Volume 24, File 7, pg 18: "A Pack of Lies",File 820</ref>

Furthermore, when the two of them meet on the rooftop of the Haido City Hotel, there are more suggestive exchanges. Gin purposefully chose not to do his job in the most efficient fashion -shooting Shiho in the chimney- but instead chose to make a special exception for her by waiting out for her on the snowy rooftop because killing her there would be, paraphrasing, more beautiful.<ref>Quote the whole line here</ref> She even gets into the act by thanking him, albeit sarcastically, for "waiting for her in the cold"<ref name=242p3>Manga Volume 24, File 11, pg 3: "The White World"</ref>; Shiho seems to purposefully be alluding to the stereotypic scenario of one lover waiting for another in poor climate. Gin also makes a comment about her disguise, the uniform and the glasses, being unsuitable for her, which carries an implication that he thinks there is some other outfit which would be more suitable.<ref name=242p3/>

====Conan Drill====
A more official confirmation they may have had a relationship was given in the official Detective Conan guidebook Conan Drill. On page 239, there is a diagram of the relationships between various Black Organization members. Gin's feelings towards Shiho were listed as "abnormal attachment"<ref>異常な執着</ref> and her feelings for him were "hatred"<ref>憎しみ</ref>. It also stated they may have had a love affair or relationship<ref>恋愛関係？</ref> and that perhaps Shiho and Vermouth were love rivals.<ref>恋のライバル…? Vermouth and Gin's love relationship arrow was labeled "sexual relations" (肉体関係) so if Gin was in a relationship with Shiho as well, Vermouth would have been love rivals with Shiho over Gin.</ref>
