After hearing about a burglary case from [[Wataru Takagi|Detective Takagi]] and [[Detective Horita]], the [[Detective Boys]] head to a pond to witness animal control officers attempting to capture an [[Wikipedia: Alligator snapping turtle|alligator snapping turtle]] that was abandoned by its owner. As the group discovers the real owner of the snapping turtle, Izumi Kimata, they are surprised to find a man named Jiro Nihonmatsu claiming that it's his turtle. Nihonmatsu says he wants to raise the turtle to make up for mistreating his own pet, a green turtle, when he was younger, so Kimata agrees to allow him to raise it. When the animal control officers discover that there's four snapping turtles altogether Nihonmatsu decides to raise all four and makes some unusual statements about turtles causing Conan to become suspicious of him.

[[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] reveals that after the burglary, '''Nihonmatsu''' hid the money in the locker and went to the pound to burn his mask and gloves that were used during the robbery.

While doing so, he was startled by a snapping turtle and ended up dropping the storage locker key which ended up being swallowed by the turtle. Nihonmatsu was pretending to be the turtle's owner, but after learning there were four of them he decided to take them all in so that he could kill them and take back his key. Nihonmatsu is arrested by the authorities for robbery.</spoiler>

While lounging at a bookstore, Kogoro and Conan hear police sirens nearby. They spot Inspector Megure and Officer Takagi in a passing police car, hop in, and join them on their way to the crime scene. They arrive at an apartment building to investigate a murder. The victim is Murako Saikawa (65), a once-famous mystery novelist who lived alone, whom Conan (as Shinichi Kudo) recognizes for her masterpiece novel, ''The Village of Orochi''. She was killed by a blow to the back of the head with a bronze figurine, with the estimated time of death between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM the previous night, though the exact details are pending the autopsy.

The two suspects are the first discoverers: Shunichi Tono, her editor at Mystery Publishing, and Keizo Murata, the building manager. Tono claims he visited Saikawa for a meeting from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM the night before to make arrangements, and returned that morning to deliver some documents she had requested. He revealed that since the novelist was not answering the doorbell, he called the building manager to get the keys, and together they found her dead. Conan subtly notes to Kogoro that his detective intuition was spot on to feel something was wrong—most people wouldn't jump to calling the manager right off the bat just because a doorbell went unanswered. Prompted by this, Tono reveals a postcard containing a death threat the novelist received a few days prior. Kogoro reads the message aloud: "Dear Saikawa Murako-sensei, I'm thinking of adding your life to my collection next. I will go to visit you in the near future to take your life." Kogoro misreads the sender's signature as "Taniyoshi Ohebi," but Tono quickly corrects him, clarifying it is "Ryo Orochiya," the genius criminal from her most famous novel. Kogoro deduces that the killer used a fictional character's name to deliberately complicate the investigation, while Conan silently wonders if the culprit is staging this on purpose.

To get properly set up, Inspector Megure asks Murata if he could lend them a vacant room to use as a stronghold for the investigation. Megure then asks Tono to spare a little more of his time, noting that the editor is likely the last person who met the victim. Kogoro points out that the killer must have locked the door when escaping the previous night in order to delay the discovery of the body. Since Saikawa's door was locked and both her keys were inside, the killer had to have used a spare key, which both Tono and Murata could access. Inspector Megure notes that while apartment residents are given two keys, both of Saikawa's keys were found inside her room. Officer Takagi concludes that the number of people who could use a spare key is limited. Megure points out that Tono could have made a spare key if he waited for the chance to do so. Regarding the building manager, Megure receives a call and reports that Kawanaka-kun, who was asking questions in the neighborhood looking for a lead, found someone who heard the victim and the manager having a heated argument several days ago (due to Saikawa catching him drinking on the job). Hearing these developments, Kogoro confidently states that the suspects have already been narrowed down. While investigating the room, Conan spots a small, green plastic sushi leaf ornament hidden on the floor behind a cabinet. He also notices fresh marinated ginger slices (gari) resting in the sink's corner strainer. Kogoro observes the ginger as well, the editor pointed out that Saikawa-sensei actually hated fresh marinated ginger. He explained that she disliked its sweet and sour taste. Tono suggests that since she had specifically asked him to order the sushi delivery for her the night before, she likely just threw the ginger away in the sink without eating it.

Meanwhile, Conan mentally reviews the suspect list. He notes that Tono was present at the apartment around the time the murder was committed, while Murata, the building manager, clearly had a motive. He also realizes that both of these men were in a position to easily obtain a spare key to the room if they wanted one. Looking at a suspicious wire or string left on the floor, the police began to formulate a theory: the culprit may have snuck back into the room while pretending to be the first to discover the body. This would have given them the perfect opportunity to retrieve and get rid of any incriminating evidence they had left behind the day before. Once Officer Chiba told the inspector that the room was ready, the police began asking the two suspects about what happened last night. As Conan heads to the spare room, however, he remains bothered by the marinated ginger. Something about the claim that Saikawa had simply thrown it away the previous night doesn't sit right with him.

As the police and Kogoro reviewed the events surrounding the murder, they established that Saikawa had been killed sometime between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM the previous night. Tono explained that he had arrived at Saikawa's apartment at 6:30 PM. Although Saikawa had stopped writing, Tono believed she had produced enough masterpieces to warrant a compilation of her work. The two spent about an hour discussing the project. Tono had also ordered a Prime Sushi platter for her that evening. The sushi arrived at around 8:00 PM, but Tono claimed that he had to stop somewhere else after placing the order, so he left once the delivery arrived. He told Saikawa that he would bring the necessary documents the following morning. At around 8:15 PM, Tono joined his friends at a pub in front of the station and remained there until midnight. Once his friends confirmed his whereabouts, Tono had a solid alibi for the latter part of the estimated time of death. He admitted that he knew the police suspected him, but insisted that he could never have harmed Saikawa, whom he regarded as "Japan's jewel of mystery."

Murata, meanwhile, denied having a heated argument with Saikawa several days earlier. He claimed that the witnesses had simply misunderstood what they saw. When questioned about the night of the murder, Murata said he had remained inside the building manager's office. However, because he had been alone, nobody could verify his alibi. This made Kogoro suspect that the manager might be hiding something. Takagi pointed out that 8:00 PM was the crucial point in the investigation. If Saikawa had been killed sometime between 7:00 and 8:00 PM, Tono could still be the culprit. However, if the murder occurred after 8:00 PM, Murata would also have to be considered a serious suspect. Megure therefore ordered the officers to split up and verify both men's alibis. Takagi, accompanied by Kogoro and Conan, went to Takarazushi to confirm Tono's account of the sushi delivery. The shop owner revealed an important detail: his Prime Sushi platter normally did not include squid or octopus. He only added them when Saikawa herself placed the order because she particularly liked both. However, on the previous night's order, he had accidentally forgotten to add them. He considered the mistake particularly embarrassing because it had happened on what might have been Saikawa's final order.

When Takagi asked about the delivery time, the owner confirmed that the sushi had arrived at Saikawa's apartment at approximately 8:00 PM. More importantly, he had neither seen Saikawa nor heard her voice when he made the delivery. This led Megure to consider the possibility that Saikawa was already dead—or at least no longer in the apartment—when the sushi arrived. Before the investigation could proceed further, the editor-in-chief of Mystery Publishing arrived and introduced himself, handing Takagi his contact card. He immediately asked whether the police were treating Tono as a suspect. The editor-in-chief defended Tono, explaining that Saikawa was the reason Tono had become an editor in the first place. Tono had been a devoted fan of her work and was the one who pushed for the compilation of her novels. He confirmed that Tono had been working on plans to publish a collection of Saikawa's stories, despite the novelist having become largely forgotten by the public. When Takagi admitted that he had never heard of Murako Saikawa before this case, the editor-in-chief explained that her declining popularity was precisely why her work had been overlooked. Tono, however, continued to admire her writing and had personally insisted that her stories deserved to be published again.

Despite the financial risk to the publishing company, the staff eventually agreed to Tono's proposal. The editor-in-chief explained that Tono's determination had convinced them that he genuinely wanted to make Saikawa happy one last time and was willing to put his heart and soul into preserving her work. Tono then revealed another important detail: Saikawa had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and had only about six months left to live. His revelation further strengthened the impression that Tono had no reason to kill her, as he appeared to be the person most devastated by her death and had been working so hard to fulfill what could have been her final wish. Just as the police were preparing to let Tono leave, Megure received a call informing him that the autopsy report was ready. The examination revealed rice grains and pieces of raw seafood in Saikawa's stomach, indicating that she had eaten sushi roughly an hour before her death. Based on the estimated digestion time, the police concluded that Saikawa had most likely been killed around 9:00 PM.

This effectively confirmed Tono's alibi, since his friends had verified that he was already at the pub by 8:15 PM and remained there until midnight. The police apologized for treating him as a suspect, and Tono prepared to leave. Conan, however, remained uneasy. Although Tono's alibi appeared solid, he could not shake the feeling that something about the case still did not add up.

Then another development emerged. Through Officer Chiba, the police received confirmation from a delivery employee that Murata's whereabouts around 9:00 PM could also be accounted for. The courier explained that he had been making a scheduled delivery to the building that evening. As he approached the building at around 9:00 PM, he saw Murata outside, apparently drunk, repeatedly ringing Saikawa's doorbell. Murata admitted that Saikawa had previously caught him drinking alcohol while on duty and had warned him that she would report him to the maintenance company. Fearing that he would lose his job, Murata said he had gone to Saikawa's apartment that night to beg her not to report him. However, despite ringing the doorbell several times, she never answered. Murata then asked the police whether they were still going to suspect him, insisting that if they did, they should at least show him some actual evidence. Because of the strong smell of alcohol coming from Murata, Takagi opened a window to air out the room. A sudden gust of wind sent the newly arrived autopsy report flying toward Conan, who managed to catch it and quickly glanced over its contents. The report listed the food found in Saikawa's stomach: rice grains, tuna, octopus, squid, egg, and other sushi ingredients.

Conan smirked. He has realized what trick did the culprit used.

They spot Inspector Megure and Officer Takagi in a passing police car, hop in, and join them on their way to the crime scene. They arrive at an apartment building to investigate a murder. The victim is Murako Saikawa (65), a once-famous mystery novelist who lived alone, whom Conan (as Shinichi Kudo) recognizes for her masterpiece novel, ''The Village of Orochi''. She was killed by a blow to the back of the head with a bronze figurine, with the estimated time of death between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM the previous night, though the exact details are pending the autopsy.

The two suspects are the first discoverers: Shunichi Tono, her editor at Mystery Publishing, and Keizo Murata, the building manager. Tono claims he visited Saikawa for a meeting from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM the night before to make arrangements, and returned that morning to deliver some documents she had requested. He revealed that since the novelist was not answering the doorbell, he called the building manager to get the keys, and together they found her dead. Conan subtly notes to Kogoro that his detective intuition was spot on to feel something was wrong—most people wouldn't jump to calling the manager right off the bat just because a doorbell went unanswered. Prompted by this, Tono reveals a postcard containing a death threat the novelist received a few days prior. Kogoro reads the message aloud: "Dear Saikawa Murako-sensei, I'm thinking of adding your life to my collection next. I will go to visit you in the near future to take your life." Kogoro misreads the sender's signature as "Taniyoshi Ohebi," but Tono quickly corrects him, clarifying it is "Ryo Orochiya," the genius criminal from her most famous novel. Kogoro deduces that the killer used a fictional character's name to deliberately complicate the investigation, while Conan silently wonders if the culprit is staging this on purpose.

To get properly set up, Inspector Megure asks Murata if he could lend them a vacant room to use as a stronghold for the investigation. Megure then asks Tono to spare a little more of his time, noting that the editor is likely the last person who met the victim. Kogoro points out that the killer must have locked the door when escaping the previous night in order to delay the discovery of the body. Since Saikawa's door was locked and both her keys were inside, the killer had to have used a spare key, which both Tono and Murata could access. Inspector Megure notes that while apartment residents are given two keys, both of Saikawa's keys were found inside her room. Officer Takagi concludes that the number of people who could use a spare key is limited. Megure points out that Tono could have made a spare key if he waited for the chance to do so. Regarding the building manager, Megure receives a call and reports that Kawanaka-kun, who was asking questions in the neighborhood looking for a lead, found someone who heard the victim and the manager having a heated argument several days ago (due to Saikawa catching him drinking on the job). Hearing these developments, Kogoro confidently states that the suspects have already been narrowed down. While investigating the room, Conan spots a small, green plastic sushi leaf ornament hidden on the floor behind a cabinet. He also notices fresh marinated ginger slices (gari) resting in the sink's corner strainer. Kogoro observes the ginger as well, the editor pointed out that Saikawa-sensei actually hated fresh marinated ginger. He explained that she disliked its sweet and sour taste. Tono suggests that since she had specifically asked him to order the sushi delivery for her the night before, she likely just threw the ginger away in the sink without eating it.

Meanwhile, Conan mentally reviews the suspect list. He notes that Tono was present at the apartment around the time the murder was committed, while Murata, the building manager, clearly had a motive. He also realizes that both of these men were in a position to easily obtain a spare key to the room if they wanted one. Looking at a suspicious wire or string left on the floor, the police began to formulate a theory: the culprit may have snuck back into the room while pretending to be the first to discover the body. This would have given them the perfect opportunity to retrieve and get rid of any incriminating evidence they had left behind the day before. Once Officer Chiba told the inspector that the room was ready, the police began asking the two suspects about what happened last night. As Conan heads to the spare room, however, he remains bothered by the marinated ginger. Something about the claim that Saikawa had simply thrown it away the previous night doesn't sit right with him.

As the police and Kogoro reviewed the events surrounding the murder, they established that Saikawa had been killed sometime between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM the previous night. Tono explained that he had arrived at Saikawa's apartment at 6:30 PM. Although Saikawa had stopped writing, Tono believed she had produced enough masterpieces to warrant a compilation of her work. The two spent about an hour discussing the project. Tono had also ordered a Prime Sushi platter for her that evening. The sushi arrived at around 8:00 PM, but Tono claimed that he had to stop somewhere else after placing the order, so he left once the delivery arrived. He told Saikawa that he would bring the necessary documents the following morning. At around 8:15 PM, Tono joined his friends at a pub in front of the station and remained there until midnight. Once his friends confirmed his whereabouts, Tono had a solid alibi for the latter part of the estimated time of death. He admitted that he knew the police suspected him, but insisted that he could never have harmed Saikawa, whom he regarded as "Japan's jewel of mystery."

Murata, meanwhile, denied having a heated argument with Saikawa several days earlier. He claimed that the witnesses had simply misunderstood what they saw. When questioned about the night of the murder, Murata said he had remained inside the building manager's office. However, because he had been alone, nobody could verify his alibi. This made Kogoro suspect that the manager might be hiding something. Takagi pointed out that 8:00 PM was the crucial point in the investigation. If Saikawa had been killed sometime between 7:00 and 8:00 PM, Tono could still be the culprit. However, if the murder occurred after 8:00 PM, Murata would also have to be considered a serious suspect. Megure therefore ordered the officers to split up and verify both men's alibis. Takagi, accompanied by Kogoro and Conan, went to Takarazushi to confirm Tono's account of the sushi delivery. The shop owner revealed an important detail: his Prime Sushi platter normally did not include squid or octopus. He only added them when Saikawa herself placed the order because she particularly liked both. However, on the previous night's order, he had accidentally forgotten to add them. He considered the mistake particularly embarrassing because it had happened on what might have been Saikawa's final order.

He immediately asked whether the police were treating Tono as a suspect. The editor-in-chief defended Tono, explaining that Saikawa was the reason Tono had become an editor in the first place. Tono had been a devoted fan of her work and was the one who pushed for the compilation of her novels. He confirmed that Tono had been working on plans to publish a collection of Saikawa's stories, despite the novelist having become largely forgotten by the public. When Takagi admitted that he had never heard of Murako Saikawa before this case, the editor-in-chief explained that her declining popularity was precisely why her work had been overlooked. Tono, however, continued to admire her writing and had personally insisted that her stories deserved to be published again.

Despite the financial risk to the publishing company, the staff eventually agreed to Tono's proposal. The editor-in-chief explained that Tono's determination had convinced them that he genuinely wanted to make Saikawa happy one last time and was willing to put his heart and soul into preserving her work. Tono then revealed another important detail: Saikawa had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and had only about six months left to live. His revelation further strengthened the impression that Tono had no reason to kill her, as he appeared to be the person most devastated by her death and had been working so hard to fulfill what could have been her final wish. Just as the police were preparing to let Tono leave, Megure received a call informing him that the autopsy report was ready. The examination revealed rice grains and pieces of raw seafood in Saikawa's stomach, indicating that she had eaten sushi roughly an hour before her death. Based on the estimated digestion time, the police concluded that Saikawa had most likely been killed around 9:00 PM.

This effectively confirmed Tono's alibi, since his friends had verified that he was already at the pub by 8:15 PM and remained there until midnight. The police apologized for treating him as a suspect, and Tono prepared to leave. Conan, however, remained uneasy. Although Tono's alibi appeared solid, he could not shake the feeling that something about the case still did not add up.

Then another development emerged. Through Officer Chiba, the police received confirmation from a delivery employee that Murata's whereabouts around 9:00 PM could also be accounted for. The courier explained that he had been making a scheduled delivery to the building that evening. As he approached the building at around 9:00 PM, he saw Murata outside, apparently drunk, repeatedly ringing Saikawa's doorbell. Murata admitted that Saikawa had previously caught him drinking alcohol while on duty and had warned him that she would report him to the maintenance company. Fearing that he would lose his job, Murata said he had gone to Saikawa's apartment that night to beg her not to report him. However, despite ringing the doorbell several times, she never answered. Murata then asked the police whether they were still going to suspect him, insisting that if they did, they should at least show him some actual evidence. Because of the strong smell of alcohol coming from Murata, Takagi opened a window to air out the room. A sudden gust of wind sent the newly arrived autopsy report flying toward Conan, who managed to catch it and quickly glanced over its contents. The report listed the food found in Saikawa's stomach: rice grains, tuna, octopus, squid, egg, and other sushi ingredients.

Conan smirked. He has realized what trick did the culprit used.
