== Background ==

At the beginning of the series, Shinichi brings his friend [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] to a local theme park called "Tropical Land", to celebrate her victory in the Metropolitan Karate Championships. He later ends up solving a murder case there.<ref name="episode1">[[Roller Coaster Murder Case|Episode 1: Roller Coaster Murder Case]].</ref> As they are leaving, Shinichi witnesses a suspicious exchange between an unknown man and [[Vodka]] in a secluded area just outside the park. He leaves Ran and investigates but does not notice [[Gin]], Vodka's partner, who knocks him out and forces him to swallow a new experimental poison known as [[APTX 4869]]. They then leave him to die. However, instead of killing Shinichi, a rare side-effect occurred. It shrinks his body so it appears to be that of his six or seven year-old self. At the beginning of the series, Shinichi is a 17-year old student at Teitan High School. He was already well-known as a brilliant young detective who solved many difficult cases that the professionals could not and, therefore, is known as the ''savior of the police force''<ref name="episode1"></ref>. Since Shinichi isn't featured as prominently as Conan throughout the series, only a few of his relationships with other characters have been substantially explored.

=== Ran Mouri ===

[[Ran Mouri]] is Shinichi's childhood friend and canonical love interest. They have known each other since as early as kindergarten<ref name="Grade1"/> and had been playmates since then, which caused some censure from [[Eri Kisaki]].They are very close together, they have even been together as long as the time of children all the way to young adults, they have some what of a love-hate relationship in the beginning but when she met Conan (who is Shinichi but she doesn't know it), she told him that She was in love with him for some time, probably ever since they first met, which caused Shinichi/Conan to blush like mad. They are living together with her dad and solves crimes with her father (without her noticing), making him appear as a great detective for most of the cases that Shinichi has solved himself. Conan has shared a great deal of affection to Ran since him being Conan including hugging, holding hands, and at even one time they slept in the same bed and even took a bath together (which caused him to get a nosebleed). Shinichi has confessed his love to Ran in the 4th movie non-canon 'Captured In Her Eyes' (which Ran mistook as his attempt to get her memories back). At one time he tried to confess his love properly (some viewers say to even propose) to Ran, but was interrupted by a case that got held there. Also, when Shinichi went missing, Ran was worried sick and she was afraid that something bad had happened to him and almost went to the police. It is also shown that she couldn't even sleep cause she missed him all to much. So what Shinichi used his bowtie to mimic his real voice and called her, telling her that everything's alright and he's getting a difficult case done. Ai Haibara is the third girl that seems to have somewhat romantic feelings for Conan/Shinichi, although she never truly admits it. Indeed, it is a mystery just exactly what she feels for him, whether friendship or otherwise. Some people, such as [[Yukiko Kudo|Conan's mother]] and [[Gin]], have stated that she has feelings for Conan. It could be said that, because of their almost equal level of intelligence as well as similarities in their pasts (i.e. they're both victims of the [[APTX 4869]]), she finds it easier to talk to him.

Despite the fact [[Toichi Kuroba|Toichi]] and Shinichi only met once prior to Toichi's death, it's worth mentioning Toichi referred to Shinichi as his "older brother" and himself as the "younger brother". This is because of Yusaku, Shinichi's father, being the '''father''' of the name of Kaitou '''Kid''', Toichi's secret identity.

== People who know Conan's real identity ==

There are only a few characters in the series who know Conan's real identity. None of them have ever betrayed Conan's identity to date. The main characters to know the secret are [[Hiroshi Agasa]], Conan's parents, [[Heiji Hattori]] and [[Ai Haibara]]. Also, [[Sharon Vineyard]] knows, but for unknown reasons, she has kept it a secret from the rest of the Organization. [[Eisuke Hondou]], the younger brother of C.I.A. agent [[Hidemi Hondou]], also knows and keeps Conan's secret. [[Kaitou Kid]] also knows Conan's identity, and whenever he tries to publicly steal, he reveals that he only wants to compete with Conan as thief and detective. Still, it is not clear whether he knows Conan's secret in the actual anime and manga, but Kid seems to realize there's something unusual about Conan.

== Appearance ==
Gin is a tall man with, as Shinichi put it, the eyes of someone who has easily killed many people without a care.<ref name=Eyes/> He has long silver hair (light-brown at first in the anime, then blond, then finally changed to match the manga as can be seen in the 13th movie: [[The Raven Chaser]]) that goes down to his hips and dark green eyes. He wears a black hat, long black coat, and a white turtleneck sweater.

Later in the series he receives a scar on his left cheek after a bullet from [[Shuichi Akai]]'s rifle grazes him.<ref name=Scar>Manga Chapter 504: Black Organization vs. FBI 2</ref>

== Background ==
Gin is a high-ranking "executive agent", often giving the other members their orders and supervising group missions, and seems to be able to communicate freely with [[Anokata]]. However, his true position is unknown, as he often goes on missions himself.

Gin seems to have undergone serious physical training, giving him incredible stamina and a high pain tolerance, as shown when he remained conscious after receiving a sleep dart and shot himself in the arm to regain full consciousness.<ref>Manga Chapter 242: A White World</ref>

In episode 425, either his name or alias most likely had to do something with a 'Koibito' when Akai Shuichi said "....My lovely, lovely archenemy, Koibito-san"

== Personality ==
Although Gin is loyal to Anokata and follows all of their orders, he is also shown to act on his own initiative on more than one occasion. He is more than willing to take matters into his own hands when he feels another member has failed.<ref name=Smart>Manga Chapter 383: The New Weapon</ref> He does not trust anyone and does not fully believe anything he doesn't witness himself.<ref>Manga Chapter 702: The Bomber's Aim</ref>. He even once pulled a gun on his own partner, Vodka, when he went against orders and rescheduled a meeting with one of their contacts outside of the organization.<ref name=Smart/>

Gin is quite perceptive and intelligent<ref name=Smart/>; he can smell out traps his partner Vodka easily falls for. He has yet to be truly outsmarted by Conan, although he has been foiled a couple of times. As soon as he becomes suspicious of someone he gets to work looking into them,<ref>Manga Chapter 700: Dangerous Area</ref> but as soon as his suspicions are proven wrong he tends to lose interest completely.<ref name=Scar/><ref>Movie 13: [[The Raven Chaser]]</ref>

Despite being menacing and coldblooded, Gin appeares to respect certain members of his team; [[Vodka]], [[Sharon Vineyard|Vermouth]] (when she persuades him to leave Conan and Kogoro alone), and [[Rena Mizunashi|Kir]] (when he decides not to kill anyone at the hospital after she asks him not to).

The relationship between Gin and Vodka is a strange one; it's very rare to see one without the other, and even when they are separated they usually converse frequently over the phone. Some might consider them 'friends' - or as close to friends as members of the Black Organization can be - but Gin never hesitates to put Vodka in his place.

*Gin's design has drastically been changed throughout the series. At first, his hair is actually light brown, and the line structure is not as detailed. In addition, part of his hair comes down his face across his nose. As the series progresses Gin's hair is blond, and the line structure is strongly detailed. Moreover, there is no hair that comes down across his face anymore. Gin's hair color changes once again in Opening 24 where it is then silver.
