== Background ==

Not much is known about Chikage yet as her appearances in ''Magic Kaito'' have been limited. In the manga she is aware of [[Toichi Kuroba|Toichi's]] secret life as [[Kaitou Kid]] and that her son, [[Kaito Kuroba|Kaito]], discovered Toichi's secret for himself.<ref>{{cite book |last=Aoyama |first=Gosho |title=Magic Kaito |volume=1 |publisher=Shogakukan |date=1988-05-15 |isbn=4-09-122081-9 |chapter=The Revived Phantom Thief |language=Japanese |location=Tokyo |page=20 }}</ref> In the TV special she was away in Las Vegas at the time and in a video message to her son said that she knew he'd probably "be very busy very soon", implying she knew about Toichi's secret room, his identity, and that Kaito would likely become Kid.

In a Detective Conan chapter, it was revealed that Chikage was once a phantom thief herself known as Phantom Lady. A background story of this is revealed in two new Magic Kaito chapters, which included Toichi's first heist. In it, Chikage met Kid there who then saved her and fell in love with each other. She mentions about this later, which sets the stage for the chapter.

== Plot overview ==
Chikage first appeared in a minor supporting role in Magic Kaito. In the manga, she lives with Kaito and seems to be a stay-at-home mom.

In the anime adaptation of the first chapter of ''Magic Kaito'', however, Chikage is abroad. From a video message to her son, it seems that she has been traveling extensively, as Kaito grouses "Geez, spending Dad's savings..." At the time of the episode, she was in Vegas with another unnamed woman, and claimed to have already seen three magic shows that day.

Before Toichi's first appearance as Kid, Chikage was a thief known as Phantom Lady. During one of her heists in Paris, Toichi dressed in the Kid outfit appears and rescues her from being captured. As they escape, Toichi kisses Chikage, comparing her to a jewel. In order to protect Chikage he decides to become a famous phantom thief to take attention away from Chikage's previous heists as the Phantom Lady. The story follows the adventures of [[Shinichi Kudo]] (also known as Jimmy Kudo in Case Closed), a prodigious young detective who was inadvertently transformed into a child due to a [[APTX 4869|poison]]. [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]] suggested to keep his identity a secret so he renames himself [[Conan Edogawa]] to hide his real identity in order to protect his beloved ones and now, he is looking for the [[Black Organization|people who shrunk him]].

Viz Media licensed the manga series under the name for English-language publication in North America and released thirty-nine volumes as of July 2011. [[Funimation Entertainment]] licensed the anime series for North American broadcast. Both the English adaption went under the name ''Case Closed''. The character names were also adapted into English ones with some names different between the two. The series has been well received in Japan with the anime adaptation ranking in the top twenty in [[Magazines#Animage|Animage]]'s polls between 1996 until 2000 where it dropped below the top twenty. In the Japanese TV anime ranking, Detective Conan often ranked the top six. It has even been used as a mascot to promote citizens to follow the law. Meanwhile, the English adaption has not been as equally popular as in Japan, and has been criticized for the name changes.

Even though Detective Conan is a [[Glossary|Shōnen]], its audience is composed of a substantial proportion of female viewers and readers. The series also seems to attract all ages.

[[Konosuke Jii|Jii]] discovers Kaito's identity during their confrontation on a rooftop in Volume 1. At first, Jii mistook Kaito for being [[Toichi Kuroba|Toichi]], Kaito's father. Ruby Jones discovers Kaito's identity during the events of the [[Magic Kaito Volume 4|Golden Eye heist]]. She pretends to be an American insurance company investigator to help protect the Golden Eye when in reality she's Chat Noir, a French thief known for stealing cat's eye jewelry. During the Golden Eye heist, Ruby manages to grab a hold of Kaito's disguise and pull it off, but luckily for Kaito, the lights shut off before anyone else can see his real face.

Chikage was the "Phantom Thief Lady", once saved by the soon-to-be Phantom Thief KID Toichi. As such, she knew that Toichi was Kaitou Kid.
