Conan and Heiji cooperate to reveal the murderer's identity and his trick. Robert Taylor is the murderer, driven by hatred towards the people who didn't stop the girl he loved from committing suicide. Sadly, he eventually realized that his own leaving message caused his beloved's death.

Katsuhiko does not smoke with filters, that’s why Naomichi’s attempt to poison him through this, failed. Meanwhile, his mother knew his habits, and put poison in his coffee, knowing that he wouldn’t eat the antidote in the cake. The reason she had a change of heart when Susumu drank the coffee is because he drank the coffee with the poison, so she quickly gave him the antidote in the cake so he wouldn't die. She also framed Yoshimi by switching the chocolates she gave him with a half-eaten bar that Katsuhiko apparently ate. Though his mother immediately washed all the cups and switched the chocolates, poison lingers much deeper than the naked eye could see.

When her husband’s business took a turn for the worse, Katsuhiko's mother had to think of the quickest way to acquire Katsuhiko’s estate, and save the house.

Katsuhiko is an orphan who was adopted by his only living relative when he was a kid. His foster mother knew he fell in love with Yoshimi since she closely resembled his deceased mother, so she framed her.

Conan realizes that the shapes on the treasure map really refer to the shapes of neon signs near Touto Tower. It wouldn't make sense for someone who does not speak Japanese to make a reference to a Japanese named street, but rather draw pictures of a recognizable objects they saw.

Conan and the Detective Boys manage to find the location of the missing Maple Leaf coins, only to be confronted by Cavane's thugs. Thanks to Conan's quick thinking, Conan and the Detective Boys manage to knock the thugs unconscious and run to the police.

* An entire portion of the story is left out of the anime where Ran takes Conan, Genta, Ayumi, and Mitsuhiko to [[Setting#Touto .28Tokyo.29 Tower .28.E6.9D.B1.E9.83.BD.E3.82.BF.E3.83.AF.E3.83.BC.29|Touto Tower]]. She recalls a time when she and Shinichi visited the tower and when he bought her a cold drink, which he put up to her cheek. Conan does the same thing, which prompts her to ask him about his true identity (as the manga version takes place after the [[The Shinkansen's Bomb Case]]). Conan responds by stating that he is Kamen Yaiba. The scene in question would later appear (ironically) at the begining of the fourth movie [[Captured in Her Eyes]] which Ran has a flashback to.

[[Conan]] declines to walk home from school with classmates [[Ayumi Yoshida|Ayumi]], [[Genta Kojima|Genta]], and [[Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya|Mitsuhiko]]. He arrives at the Mouri Detective Agency to see that without work, [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] spent all day drinking beer and watching his favorite popstar, [[Yoko Okino]], on TV. When a client arrives during one of her shows, Kogoro even tries to make them return later — until he realizes that the client is Yoko Okino herself, accompanied by her manager. Kogoro quickly makes himself presentable and hears her concerns about a recent stalker. He agrees to investigate at her apartment, and Ran and Conan tag along. Ayumi, Genta, and Mitsuhiko were watching the agency and also follow, so when the front door opens everyone sees the body on the floor inside.

'''Yuko''' is responsible for the missing apartment key, threatening phone calls, etc. This is why Yuko knew where Yoko's bathroom was and why she knew the Statue of Liberty was actually a lighter.

Conan as Kogoro reveals that the Fujie's murder was not a murder at all; Fujie committed '''suicide''' by freezing a knife inside a block of ice, grabbing a hair from Yoko's hairbrush and then falling backwards onto the knife from the chair in the room. The odd indentation in the floor was caused by the knife when Fujie landed on it. The water spots on the floor are from the melted ice. Before killing himself, Fujie turned up the heat in Yoko's apartment in order to melt the ice, and therefore evidence, away.

===Motive===

Yuko's motive for playing mean pranks and tricks on Yoko was to frighten her and find potential scandal material.

Fujie's motive for committing suicide was Yuko's startled reaction to Fujie grabbing her by the shoulder. Fujie used to be Yoko's boyfriend until Yamagishi asked him to break up with her for the sake of Yoko's career. Mistaking Yuko for Yoko, whom he still loved, Fujie took this reaction to mean that Yoko never wanted to see him again. Unable to bear the thought, Fujie committed suicide, framing Yoko for the murder in despairing revenge.

The episode starts in a mansion where a party has been interrupted by a murder: one of the guests, President Yamazaki of Yatsubishi Bank, was found dead with a bullet in his heart. *Shinichi states that the room Yamazaki was killed in was locked from the inside. The only possible entrance into the room was the window.
*The mansion owner claims that there is at least a 10 meter gap between the two windows Shinichi states the killer used. Shinichi points out however that if the killer used the roof to get closer to the other window this gap is shortened to a mere 2 meters and therefore could be easily jumped across.
*Shinichi notes that there is an indentation on the balcony where the killer attached a rope with a piece of wood at the end, allowing the killer a way to get back across to the 3rd floor window, as it is impossible for the killer to have successfully landed on the 10 centimeter roof ledge coming back. By using a piece of wood rather than simply tying the rope to the balcony the killer was able to remove evidence of his method of escape while on the other side of the building.
*The lack of footprints below the window implies it was an inside job.
*Shinichi claims to have spoken with the killer's doctor.

Shinichi concludes that the murderer could only have been someone who knew the mansion very well and eventually points his finger at the '''owner'''. The latter, being in a wheelchair, then starts to laugh claiming he's in no position to be able to commit such a crime. Shinichi then grabs a globe and throws it towards the owner who immediately jumps out of his chair to avoid it. The maid and guests are all in shock. Shinichi then says that he's been healed for a while now as reported by his doctor, which Megure confirms.

Had Shinichi not proven the truth behind the murder, Hitomi was planning to commit suicide via drugs after the visit to Tropical Land.

Shinichi, suspicious of the two men dressed in all black that rode the coaster, decides to follow them on their way to the outskirts of Tropical Land. He tells Ran to head home without him, and when she tries to follow her shoelace breaks, leaving her to watch him go with the strange feeling she'll never see him again. Shinichi gets caught up watching [[Vodka|one of the men]] conduct a blackmail transaction with a company executive and doesn't notice the [[Gin|other man dressed in black]] sneaking up from behind until the man knocks Shinichi out with pipe. To avoid the attention of the police, they give Shinichi an [[APTX 4869|un-tested poison]] in order to kill him without a trace, and leave him to die. However, rather than killing Shinichi, the poison shrinks him down to the size of a [[Conan Edogawa|six year old]].

* The first episode of the anime includes the Detective Boys who don't appear until many chapters later in the manga.
* Hiroshi Agasa and Kogoro Mouri also appear in this episode, whereas in the manga they make their debut in the [[Company President's Daughter Kidnapping Case]].
* The mansion owner kills his wife in the manga. In the anime the owner kills his friend, Yamazaki.
* In the manga, Shinichi is asked for the football by some kids but in the anime the ball is from some players in his school and he also makes a goal.

*In the English Dub, Agasa reactivates his rocket pack on purpose, whereas in the Japanese Version he does so unknowingly.
*In the English Dub, Kogoro takes offense to Ran's compliment of Shinichi, whereas the Japanese Version has him stating that he needs to make a living.
*In the English Dub, Ran sarcastically states that Shinichi looked at Hitomi's legs for the purpose of making a deduction, whereas in the Japanese Version she critiques him for knowing that Hitomi is a gymnast before shaking her hand.

[[Shinichi Kudo|Shinichi]] realizes that the poison shrunk him, and after making it home, asks [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]] for help. Agasa warns that to stay safely hidden from the men in black, Shinichi can tell no one else, even [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] - who coincidentally shows up, intending to check on Shinichi. Agasa convinces her to look after Shinichi, who tells her his name is [[Conan Edogawa]]. On the way to her house, Ran confides to Conan that she really likes Shinichi, but Conan's reply is interrupted by [[Kogoro Mouri|Ran's father]] rushing outside on the trail of a case. He brags that he's been hired to find a CEO's daughter, who was kidnapped by a "man in black". Conan sneaks along in case it is a lead, followed by Ran, who explains Conan's situation to Kogoro. Kogoro can't kick them out of a moving taxi, so simply orders them to stay out of the way.

According to the butler, Asao, CEO Tani's daughter Akiko was taken from the house's garden by a man in black, who escaped without alerting any of the guard dogs on the premises. The kidnapper demands that the CEO shut down his company for a while, as well as deliver a large ransom.

*Conan hints to Kogoro that it is strange that the guard dogs did not bark at the man dressed in black kidnapping Akiko, since the kidnapper supposedly used the pine tree the dogs was near to escape and they bark at anyone not of the household.
*Asao seemed surprised when Tani claimed the kidnapper was asking for ransom money in addition to shutting down his company temporarily.
**During a phone call with the kidnapper, Akiko manages to say she thinks she's in the storeroom of a school and sees a chimney outside the window.

===Conclusion===
Kogoro, thanks to hints from Conan, figures out that Akiko's kidnapping is a ''fake'' and that she should be in a nearby hotel. Unfortunately, Akiko was kidnapped for real after the fake kidnapping by a man demanding ransom money in return for Akiko's safety.

After searching nearby schools using one of the dogs, named Jumbo, as transportation and a guide, Conan determines that what Akiko saw outside the school window wasn't a chimney at all, but rather the side of a large skyscraper. Conan then finds Akiko but is unable to take down the kidnapper due to his shrunken size. Thankfully, Jumbo summoned the others and Ran uses her karate on the kidnapper in the nick of time.

===Motive===
Akiko's motive for getting Asao to cooperate with her "kidnapping" was that she wanted to spend more time with her father, who is always at work and doesn't play with her very much anymore.

=== Ending ===
On the way home, Ran reminds Kogoro about Conan's situation and asks if he can stay. Kogoro thinks that Conan acted like a good luck charm with how well the case turned out, and enthusiastically consents. The next scene shows Conan in his new elementary school classroom, introducing himself - though he privately wishes that being stuck back in first grade could be just a bad dream.

==Manga to anime changes==
*The younger Shinichi is in a medical center at Tropical Land whereas in the anime he runs off after being awoken by the police.
*In the manga, Tani immediately puts the vacation plans with Akiko on hold (much to the latter's disappointment). The anime leaves this scene out.
*Rather than showing Conan being introduced to his new class (with Ayumi, Mitsuhiko, and Genta as students), the manga version of the story end with Conan reflecting on how he is incapable of fighting the bad guys in his younger form.

==Dub changes==
*In the English Dub, Ran pointed out that Kogoro did not have a case, with him responding that he polished off a case (a case of beer), whereas in the Japanese Version, Ran states that his messy office is why [[Eri]] left him and why Kogoro hasn't had work with him responding that he's selective with his job.
*In the English Dub, Conan blushes during Ran's hug because his disguise worked, whereas in the Japanese Version he blushed because he felt her chest.

'''The Roller Coaster Murder Case''' is the pilot episode of series, and aired on January 8, 1996 in Japan. It begins in the middle of a case where a murder was committed during a private mansion's party. This opening scene introduces both [[Inspector Megure]] and [[Shinichi Kudo]] for the very first time, as well as showcasing Shinichi's impressive deduction and soccer skills when he reveals the killer.

== Case 1: Crime at the Private Mansion ==

The episode starts in a mansion where a party has been interrupted by a murder: one of the guests, President Yamazaki of Yatsubishi Bank, was found dead with a bullet in his heart. The police, led by [[Juzo Megure|Inspector Megure]], have been investigating the crime scene, but have no conclusive evidence. However, [[Shinichi Kudo|Shinichi]] makes his grand entrance and claims having figured out the case.

*Shinichi states that the room Yamazaki was killed in was locked from the inside. The only possible entrance into the room was the window.
*The mansion owner claims that there is at least a 10 meter gap between the two windows Shinichi states the killer used. Shinichi points out however that if the killer used the roof to get closer to the other window this gap is shortened to a mere 2 meters and therefore could be easily jumped across.
*Shinichi notes that there is an indentation on the balcony where the killer attached a rope with a piece of wood at the end, allowing the killer a way to get back across to the 3rd floor window, as it is impossible for the killer to have successfully landed on the 10 centimeter roof ledge coming back. By using a piece of wood rather than simply tying the rope to the balcony the killer was able to remove evidence of his method of escape while on the other side of the building.
*The lack of footprints below the window implies it was an inside job.
*Shinichi claims to have spoken with the killer's doctor.

====Conclusion====

Shinichi concludes that the murderer could only have been someone who knew the mansion very well and eventually points his finger at the '''owner'''. The latter, being in a wheelchair, then starts to laugh claiming he's in no position to be able to commit such a crime. Shinichi then grabs a globe and throws it towards the owner who immediately jumps out of his chair to avoid it. The maid and guests are all in shock. Shinichi then says that he's been healed for a while now as reported by his doctor, which Megure confirms.

Although the episode does not clearly state the mansion owner's motive, it likely had something to do with the "under-the-table" financial dealings the owner had with Yamazaki.

Shinichi states the killer used an object like a purse or a backpack to escape the ride restraints and wrap a wire around the victim's head while in the darkness of the Mystery Coaster's tunnel. After tying the wire around the victim's head the killer tossed a hook attached to the other end onto the roller coaster's track, beheading the victim using the coaster's speed and movement. Shinichi concludes the murderer is '''Hitomi''', as her expertise as a gymnast makes this feat possible. He proves her guilt through two crucial pieces of evidence:
# Hitomi's necklace (the murder weapon) is missing after the end of the ride
# Hitomi has a tear-trail on her face that runs horizontally which is impossible unless she was crying during the course of the ride.

Hitomi's motive for murdering Kishida is because she used to go out with him long before she met Aiko and Reiko in college, until he dumped her. Hitomi planned to murder Kishida at the place they had their first date (Tropical Land) using the very necklace he had bought for her. Had Shinichi not proven the truth behind the murder, Hitomi was planning to commit suicide via drugs after the visit to Tropical Land.

== Episode Resolution: Chasing the Men in Black ==

Shinichi, suspicious of the two men dressed in all black that rode the coaster, decides to follow them on their way to the outskirts of Tropical Land. He tells Ran to head home without him, and when she tries to follow her shoelace breaks, leaving her to watch him go with the strange feeling she'll never see him again. Shinichi gets caught up watching [[Vodka|one of the men]] conduct a blackmail transaction with a company executive and doesn't notice the [[Gin|other man dressed in black]] sneaking up from behind until the man knocks Shinichi out with pipe. To avoid the attention of the police, they give Shinichi an [[APTX 4869|un-tested poison]] in order to kill him without a trace, and leave him to die. However, rather than killing Shinichi, the poison shrinks him down to the size of a [[Conan Edogawa|six year old]].

* The first episode of the anime includes the Detective Boys who don't appear until many chapters later in the manga.
* Hiroshi Agasa and Kogoro Mouri also appear in this episode, whereas in the manga they make their debut in the [[Company President's Daughter Kidnapping Case]].
* The mansion owner kills his wife in the manga. In the anime the owner kills his friend, Yamazaki.
* In the manga, Shinichi is asked for the football by some kids but in the anime the ball is from some players in his school and he also makes a goal.
* In the manga, when Ran is trying to kick Shinichi, he leaps out of the way rather than his face ending up under her skirt.
* In the manga, Reiko points out that Gin and Vodka could have committed the murder as they were behind the victim. Shinichi acknowledges that they look suspicious, but if they pulled off the murder, they would have anticipated the arrival of the police (which they don't, as they are in a hurry to pull off their transaction).
* Shinichi uses a camera when spying on Vodka, whereas in the anime, he simply just listens to the deal going on.

*In the English Dub, Agasa reactivates his rocket pack on purpose, whereas in the Japanese Version he does so unknowingly.
*In the English Dub, Kogoro takes offense to Ran's compliment of Shinichi, whereas the Japanese Version has him stating that he needs to make a living.
*In the English Dub, Ran sarcastically states that Shinichi looked at Hitomi's legs for the purpose of making a deduction, whereas in the Japanese Version she critiques him for knowing that Hitomi is a gymnast before shaking her hand.
*In the English Dub, Gin's reason for using the [[APTX 4869]] was fear of leaving a bullet trail behind, whereas in the Japanese Version it was due to the cops still being around after the murder on the roller coaster.

On April 4, 2009, a remastered version of the case was aired. A few modifications were made in this new version: the victim's head doesn't land next to the Detective Boys and the scene where the viewer could see blood on the roller-coaster was cut.
