When Conan's glasses are taken off while he's asleep, Ran sees his face clearly and begins to suspect that he might be Shinichi. Her suspicions become stronger when she finds an old picture of them as children with a famous magician named Motoyasu Tsukumo. However, she cannot confront Conan right away, Tsukumo's wife suddenly arrives to Kogoro's office and tells him, Ran and Conan that her husband has been murdered! She also has some suspects in mind: specifically, his three disciples and prospect successors.

As Ran carefully watches Conan decipher clues, she becomes more convinced he is Shinichi. Is there some way to reverse this discovery?

Conan helps Kogoro solve his case without even having to knock him out, but after wards Ran escorts him to Shinichi's house for a confession of him being Shinichi. But Ran shows strong intuition about his personality, and it makes Conan look wary for a no way out situation.

When Shinichi's mom appears on the scene, Conan is worried thinking that Yukiko might slip about his identity. However, she told Ran a complex but convincing story about why Conan's behavior is similar to Shinichi's, helping him escape suspicion. Ran thought for some time but finally apologized to Conan for treating him that way. They were about to go back but Yukiko requested Ran to let her keep Conan for a few days since she'll be living for a while in Japan all alone. Yukiko thereafter starts to treat Shinichi as a real baby and even carried him into their house, but why has she left America for Japan?

When Yoshirou Kinoshita was 20, he became famous. Motoyasu tampered with Yoshirou's handcuffs, so that when he attempted to perform a water escape trick, he was unable to free himself and drowned. Young Mako Kinoshita, who just turned 7, had observed him tampering backstage, but she was too young to properly testify. The murder was ruled an accident. Mako studied magic so that she could become Motoyasu's understudy and get revenge for her brother. What Mako didn't know was that Motoyasu knew her true identity and that she intended to murder him. Because Motoyasu remained calmly once Mako had him tied up and poisoned, Mako threatened to kill Ayano so she could see a genuinely frightened emotion from him. Mako couldn't bring herself to murder Ayano in the end because Ayano was truly innocent, although Mako admits she wanted to more than once.</spoiler>

<spoiler>The killer is '''Yoshifusa Yabuuchi''', who actually is only impersonating the real Yoshifusa Yabuuchi, who died in Brazil years ago and was a good friend of his. The fake Yoshifusa is named '''Dickson Tanaka''', a man born in Brazil to Japanese parents and Carlos' bodyguard, since young Carlos is the real Yoshifusa's son with a Brazilian woman as well as one of the heirs. Dickson Tanaka impersonated Yoshifusa, so the threats would be directed at him and made everyone believe Carlos was his bodyguard to protect him from the others (since they thought he was a bodyguard, they wouldn't attempt anything against Carlos), and he killed Machiko in self-defense when she attempted to stab him in the bath.

The person who set up the crossbow was '''Keiko Yabuuchi.''' She tried to scare Yoshifusa into going back to Brazil, because without him, her share of the inheritance would cover up her debts.

Machiko's aim in killing "Yoshifusa Yabuuchi" was to seize his supposed share of inheritance, not knowing that he wasn't the actual heir since up until then none of the potential heirs knew about the real Yoshifusa's death. (Yoshichika ''did'' know that his brother had died, but he didn't say anything about it save for signaling it in the tape that contained his until-then secret will.) She went to an urban party and gave a phone call to establish an alibi, then drove back in a car waiting for the opportunity to kill. She told Hiromi Yabuuchi in advance to rekindle the fire heating the rural hot-tub creating an opportunity where Yoshifusa could be isolated. She had the flower in her pocket with the intention to throw suspicious on her husband's former brother-in-law, who had accused the family of murdering his sister. Much to her misfortune, Dickson/Yoshifusa was a very skilled martial artist: when she tried to stab him in the bath, he blocked her attack and then redirected it, stabbing Machiko to death as a consequence.

The reason why he did come forward, was because he received two threatening letters. One from Machiko and one from Keiko. He couldn't leave Carlos alone until both threats were eliminated.

Some of these details are revealed by Shinichi/Conan's father Yusaku, who had followed Yukiko back to Japan and then snuck into the household. Conan himself helps by drugging up Inspector Yamamura and revealing the rest. Dickson accepts his part in Machiko's death and explains his role as Carlos's tutor and bodyguard, then surrenders quietly to the police.

After all is said and done, Yusaku properly reveals himself and goes to Yukiko. The ''other'' reason why she came alone was that they had a big fight in New York, and she shoots down several of his reconciliation attempts, much to Conan's embarrassment.</spoiler>

A seven year old movie star by the name of Kazuki Kinukawa comes to the Mouri Detective Agency to try and find his mother who abandoned him at a church. His reasons are to tell his mother he will not give her any money now that he is famous. Conan is able to deduce Kazuki's mother is a hotel employee in Atami due to the old dirty postcards she sent him. Kazuki reveals that he remembered that his mother had a beauty mark near her breast. The trio and Kazuki travels to Atami to track down the hotel. They manage to find the hotel that sells the postcards and an employee there comfirms that the leftovers get divided between them. However they don't have one named Atsuko working here, but Kazuki's mother might have use another name. A freelance writer named Yasuhiro Kamoshita checks into the hotel as he plans to find Kazuki's mother and interview her to confirm whether Kazuki's father was truly a murderer. Later that day, Kamoshita is strangled to death but managed to take a picture on his cellphone during the attack.

The investigation reveals that the victim had been approaching the employees one by one and saying 'If you remember the 20 million yens, come to my room. Or else I will reveal everything.'

The picture reveals that a woman with a beauty mark near her breast is the murderer. The police gather three female employees with no alibi during the time of the murder; Each of them has a beauty mark but none of them are near the breast. But as they take a closer look at the phone they discover that Kamoshita made a phone call shortly before the murder, around 11:48 PM. They call the number and get a hold of a chief editor Izumiya from 'Weekly Hot'. He explains that Kamoshita had been on the trail of a hot scoop and that the person he was going to interview was taking a shower before the interview.

The woman with the hot scoop was Atsuko, Kazuki's mother. Kamoshita had gotten wind of that she had contacted Kazuki's production company and blackmailed them for ¥20 million if they didn't want it public that his father was a wanted murderer who is still on the lose. The company paid the money after the woman proved her identity by showing knowledge of Kazuki's birthmark and the name of the church where he was brought up. But no one known the woman's face or her voice, since the communication had been through e-mails. Kamoshita decided to track the woman down and get the whole story from her. He was planning on taking a picture of her with his phone.

Conan realized that the reason that the victim kept mentioning 20 million yen to the inn's employers was to scare one of them and find the blackmailer.

The forensic team reveals that Kamoshita was knocked on the head with a shower nozzle knocking him unconscious and was later strangled. While the police are watching a videotape found in Kamoshita's room, Conan notices that the movie ended one minute earlier than the time indicated on the box and realizes how the murder is done.

<spoiler>Conan tranquilizes Kogoro and uses his voice changing bowtie to impersonate him. The murder weapon used to strangle Kamoshita is in fact the video tape, evidenced by that the movie started earlier by one minute missing the company logo and prologue. The culprit first entered the bath room, lured Kamoshita inside then beat him with the shower head. After killing him, she threw his body into the bathtub to conceal the fact that the tape was used as a murder weapon. Conan reveals that the beauty mark on the murderer was actually a blood stain and that the culprit is revealed to be '''Toshiko Bessho''' as evidenced by the small blood stain near her collar which she covers with her clothes. Toshiko confesses to the murder and explains that she decided to play a joke on Kazuki's production company by threatening to reveal Kazuki's father is a murderer unless they pay her ¥20 million. Her only goal was to make them stop giving postcards to Kazuki from his mother. However, they actually paid her which sparked Kamoshita's investigation. Kamoshita upon finding the truth, blackmails Toshiko for money which motivated her for murder.

Toshiko had also lied about being Kazuki's mother, but this is because she cannot have children and has a deep envy of one of her fellow hosts who had a child but gave him away, the real mother of Kazuki, who also had told the details of him which Toshiko used in the blackmail. Said woman turns out to be '''Tomoka Saegusa'''. Conan later confirms to Ran that Tomoka is the mother because she used to carry Kazuki on her back with a sling while doing household chores, until she gave him up; this is why Kazuki, who had very good memory for a little kid yet couldn't recall all details, mistakenly recalled his mom's mole to be on her breast instead of on the back of her neck, where it actually is. He suggest at Kazuki might have mixed his memories from his time at the church.

The following day, Kazuki gives Tomoka a package of post cards and tells her she has to continue to send her monthly post cards or he will visit her again. As Kazuki leaves, Tomoka breaks down in guilt for abandoning her son those many years ago.</spoiler>

== Manga to anime changes ==
* The anime added an extra scene that Kazuki bumped into Saegusa which she helped him and Kazuki noticed a mole on the back of her neck.
* The female criminal's entire figure is obscured unlike in manga which the female criminal's figure is naked and only her face is obscured.
* In the anime, Conan simply hides under Kogoro's outer shirt while in the manga he hides in Kogoro's yukata.

Conan and the Detective Boys are visiting to their friend named Jun Kataoka. Later, Conan is kidnapped by a man named Tadashi Yoshizawa.

The kidnapper takes Conan to his hideout and locked him up in the old room. While locked in, Conan manages to bend lose a rusted old iron pipe belonging to the stairway railing to the door out. While first using the pipe on the door, Conan realizes his body lacks the strength to batter the door open and bends open an iron grating of a ventilation shack and crawls his way to freedom through it. Meanwhile the kidnapper picks up the ransom and manages to get away shortly before the Detective Boys with Jun returns from the arcade to his house to find the police there.

After Conan escaped the kidnapper, he told Inspector Megure everything that happened. Then after the kidnappers escape, the vehicle is finally found with Tadashi Yoshizawa murdered inside.

<spoiler>Conan manages to figure out the trick they used to change the trucks appearance to getaway and sets up a trap for the kidnappers partner using his Voice-Changing Bowtie to pretend he is Tadashi and that the kidnapper still alive. '''Goro Kitayama''', the Kataoka family's chauffeur shows up and is confronted by Conan, Wataru Takagi and Miwako Sato. Sato realized that there is one more person other than Sachiko who know Kataoka's cellphone number and that the police hide GPS truck tracking device along with ransom is Goro. Takagi was finally able to deduce that Yoshizawa used a very large sticker to disguise the truck and peel it off in the tunnel.

In a final act of desperation Goro tackles Sato and hits Takagi with a wrench before he grabs the ransom money and tries to make his escape but is stopped by Conan using the Anywhere Ball Dispensing Belt to inflate and kick a ball at him.

Both police officers quickly regains their feets and takes Goro into custody. After the case is solved, Sachiko's fashion show is resumed and is very successful. She then became Shigeru Kataoka's second wife, and Jun finally accepted her as his second mother.</spoiler>

While at the Agasa's, Conan recalls his last meeting with the Black Organization. Conan deduces that another Black Organization member must have been at the hotel party. This is when he finally singles out Chris Vineyard as his suspect. Heiji came to Tokyo to help Conan out with the case. Heiji suspects Jodie-sensei of being a possible Black Organization member, and although Conan seems reluctant to this idea, they pay Jodie-sensei a visit at her apartment. They find out here that her full name is "Jodie Saintemillion". After Jodie agrees to go out for a while with Heiji and Conan, the man living next door to Jodie falls dead outside from over 30 stories, coincidentally as the three are outside.

After the police arrive, it seems likely that the man committed suicide. However, Conan and Heiji have a different idea.

<spoiler>The culprit is '''Noboru Kawakami'''. Takai abused Sumiyo Hiraya as a subordinate employee and this drove her to suicide. Conan reveals the truth by showing how the room was switched around. When Conan and Heiji leave, concur that Jodie is someone suspicious, but believe that she is innocuous. The ending scene shows that she's already on to them in that Jodie's already knows Heiji's name and has pictures of Kudo during the time he regressed back to his former self.</spoiler>

== Manga to anime changes ==

* Jodie Starling's copies of the pictures of Ran and Conan on Vermouth's dartboard have irregular borders indicating they were photographs of Vermouth's pictures. This important clue that Jodie was not Vermouth was overlooked by the anime which drew the edges evenly. The anime version also removed the word "Angel" from Ran's photo. The cursive "cool guy" on Conan's photo was accidentally written in the anime as "cool gay", probably because the animators were not used to English cursive. Another evidence showing that Jodie was investigating Doctor Araide was also altered in the anime adaptation. While the person standing in front of Sonoko was drawn with brown hair and glasses in the manga, the animators totally omitted the glasses and colored his hair black, which might give the watchers a wrong impression that the person was Shinichi, who also participated in the school drama with those students. * This is the case that Conan told Professor Agasa "That the police records of all of Detective Mouri's solved cases have been stolen from the police HQ", which links this episode to [[The Forgotten Memento from the Crime]] case, when Detective Takagi told Conan that information.
* Conan also told Agasa that "whoever stole the files was gracious enough to return them to the police", which Takagi also told Conan in The Forgotten Memento from the Crime case.

A woman named Shizuka Ikenami asks Kogoro to help find a man named Shiro Shibata so she could retrieve an old photograph; Conan realizes that the Ikenami is lying to Kogoro when she introduces herself for unknown reasons. Realizing that Shiro was skilled with kendo, Conan assumes that his name would show up in past kendo competitions. After finding an address, they enter Shiro's apartment and find out Shiro has been murdered.

<spoiler>After a thorough investigation, Conan tranquilizes Kogoro and reveals the culprit to be Shiro's wife, '''Kyoko Shibata'''.

* Because of the time frame between the murder and its discovery, Conan removes Shizuka and Yoshikawa from the suspect list. If Shizuka did murder Shiro, fled the crime scene, and went to hire Kogoro in order to create an alibi as the first to discover the body, then she should have known that the door wasn't locked and would’ve used it as an excuse to get everyone inside to the crime scene, not to stall the discovery time and the time of death further. Moveover, it's unlikely for her to not have noticed the photo in the victim's hand and retrieve it, since it would've been an incriminating piece of evidence against her. Likewise, Yoshikawa had a large amount of time to dispose of possible evidence(s) against him, and had no need to return to the crime scene after almost half the day had passed, and even if that's the case, it's unlikely for him to keep the arrived Kogoro and the rest from leaving if he wanted to sneak into the crime scene.

* Conan reveals that Kyoko falsified Shiro's time of death by placing the morning newspaper by Shiro's late night supper after she returned from the golf club in order to pretend it was breakfast, and by using a timed video cassette recorder to record a show the time of murder would be shifted to during the morning, thus she would be removed from the suspect list due to having an alibi during the time frame. Kyoko originally intended to become the first discoverer of the body, but after she heard a message from Yoshikawa she decided to let him play the role instead of her. She hid inside the emergency exit until the time came and pretended that she had just returned from the golf club.

* Conan reveals that the photo of Shizuka was used to hide Shiro's real dying message, his '''wedding ring covered in blood''' in his right hand, which he noticed after seeing the ring mark on his palm. After she successfully removed the ring, Kyoko knocked down the photo album to make it appeared that Shiro used his last strength to grab the photo. Failing to put the ring back in Shiro's finger, she used bandages to cover the ring mark and took the ring with her, planning to dispose of it after the police left. The fact that she is in possession of the bloodied ring is solid proof that she is the murderer of her own husband.

== Motive ==
Kyoko confesses and reveals that Shiro was addicted to gambling in Mahjong with Yoshikawa, causing them to fall in debt and forcing them to sell many of their possessions such as their television, jewelry, LD player, etc. When she heard that he had decided to sell her set of golf clubs and the dowry given to them by her father as their wedding gift she was forced to kill him. Before being taken by the police, Kyoko asks to change her clothes first, Conan realizes that the dowry she meant was in fact a katana that she was trying to use to commit suicide.

Conan rushes over and opens the door revealing Kyoko with the Katana, she threatens them and tells them to stay away. However Shizuka tells them to leave this to her and she pulls out her folding fan while slowly walking towards Kyoko. Kyoko swings the katana wildly but shizuka manages to block it with her fan at the same time swiftly disarming Kyoko in an instant.

Shizuka reprimands Kyoko for trying to take another life, however Kyoko confused says that she was trying to take her own life. But Shizuka calls her a fool stating that every life is valuable including hers and that she should not take these things lightly. Kyoko willingly surrenders and remains quiet as she is taken away by inspector Yokomizo. After Kyoko is taken away, Conan asks Shizuka about her true identity after noticing that she had lied to them four times:
* If she has dust allergy, it's unlikely that her hobby is knitting with yarn.
* She easily identified the fish in the victim's meal by it’s slices, meaning that she is skilled at cooking.
* Coincidentally, like Kyoko, Shizuka hides the fact that she is married by covering her wedding ring mark with bandages.
* There is no character named Reiko in the novel, as what she was referring to at the cafe was actually Rei-Co (冷コー) or Ice Coffee. She wanted to order the said drink, but relented as only Osakan would call Ice Coffee by that term.

Heiji and Kazuha arrive and reveal that Shizuka Ikenami is actually '''Heiji's mother''' from Osaka. Shizuka confesses and tells Kogoro that she wanted to see what kind of person he was since Heiji was injured the last time he visited Heiji in Osaka.</spoiler>

The episode starts with a dark-skinned young lady in a phone booth at night, speaking to someone over the phone. Right after she is done calling, and when she was getting ready to return to her nearby car, a man dragging a club comes up from behind her and knocks her out with it.

The next scene shows Ran and Sonoko shopping for a sweater as Sonoko wants to buy for Makoto Kyogoku; Sonoko gets scolded by Ran when she learns that Sonoko wants to make it pass as if she had knitted the sweater for him. Kogoro and Conan left the girls to do their shopping, and while crossing the street Kogoro notices a good looking girl coming out of a phone booth. Conan notices that she left a ball-point pen in the booth so Kogoro grabs it and went to the lady to give it to her. As Kogoro touches her, she tackles him to the ground; Inspector Megure, Wataru Takagi and two other police officers come out and jump on Kogoro without realizing that it is Kogoro.

After they find out it is Kogoro, they all go to a pasta shop and explain the case to Kogoro. It is also shown that the lady who attacked Kogoro was Miwako Sato, posing as a decoy. They show him pictures of the three different victims (Ryouko Mizutani, Hitomi Endou, and Michiko Ishiguro - the girl from the first scene): all of them are young women with bleached hair, fashionable clothes and deep tans, and according to their testimonies the man attacking them was around their own height, meaning around 150 cms tall.

Sonoko arrives to the pasta shop right then and upon seeing the girls's pictures she identifies them as Ganguro, girls who change their looks drastically to look fashionable and exotic and as a way to rebel against Japanese society. After being unable to figure out a relation between the victims other than their looks, Kogoro brings up a case about a string of female high-school students being hit by cars, which happened twenty years ago. Inspector Megure looks shocked, stands up and says they should get back to the investigation.

As Inspector Megure is about to leave, he tells Sato and Takagi that they should start at the beginning. Then Conan spots something else similar to the three victims and Sonoko: they all are wearing rather fashionable jewelry pieces that are given as a gift in a particular shop if you spend 10,000 yen or more there. Megure approaches her, checks on the jewels Sonoko's wearing and compares them to the photos: all of the girls are at least one piece of the jewelry set, though Sonoko has them all due to having purchased lots of stuff there.

Sonoko calls Ran to ask where she is. She says she's in a parking lot and then she screams in terror because she has just found another victim. Said victim is a 20 year old girl named Tae Aizawa, who used to work at the same store: again, a very young woman with bleached hair, tanned skin, and wearing the special jewelry gifts. Unlike the others, however, Aizawa is actually dead.

The victim's boyfriend, arrives to the crime scene. His name is Noriyuki Shirakawa, he works as a cook in the convenience store owned by his dad, and he had asked Aizawa to meet up with him so they'd reunite with his dad. Some possible suspects gather in the scene: Shirakawa's father Haruyoshi (who opposed to him and Tae's relationship), the waitress Yuri Konno who also was a friend of Noriyuki Shirakawa, and a guard named Sadakane who used to work for another convenience store, whom Haruyoshi Shirakawa accuses of being the killer to ruin the store's reputation. He then also tells his son to get a new girlfriend, one "with a clean slate". Yuri Konno then explains that Aizawa was related to another case a year ago: she accidentally hit a young boy named Akira Sakurai with her car in the parking garage and killed him, thus she renounced to her job and was searching for another before she died.

Among the investigation questions, Noriyuki freaks out when his father is mentioned as a possible suspect for the case in general. He snaps and tells the police "You are all useless!" in horror and frustration. Upon hearing Noriyuki's words, Megure goes into a shocked state and remembers a very young woman saying the same phrase in tears, as well as saying "Why are you suprised? I said I was going to play decoy." Then the woman's face in his memories is shown again, except she's bleeding profusely and says "Guess... it didn't go as smoothly as in the movies." Megure drops to his knee and looks like he has a headache; he says it's nothing when Kogoro and Sato show concern, and Yuri offers apologies before taking Noriyuki away, but Conan suspects something.

Conan then brings up other points. First, only Mizutani (first victim) and Ishiguro (third) could offer reliable descriptions, since Endou (second) was attacked from behind and couldn't see who attacked her. Second: the girls weren't wearing much, even though it was freezing and at night, meaning they were in the way to their own vehicles where either was warmer or they had their coats. Sato says she will wear the decoy outfit she wore before and exit her car, in case she can do more. Inspector Megure then shouts "Didn't I say no more decoys!?" Superintendant Matsumoto arrives and asks if it's "that case" from before. Megure denies it and Conan thinks something is strange with him.

==== Part 2 ====
It is confirmed that the all the victims had been in their cars just before they were attacked. Ran and Sonoko noticed that there is something wrong with the victim, but can't tell what it is. After asking Kogoro if she can borrow his keys, Sonoko puts her and Ran's shopping bags in the car and then goes searching for the restroom, unaware that she's being watched over by the culprit who, for a then-unknown reason, decides to follow her.

The investigation continues, and when the policemen accidentally drop Aizawa's shoe and cannot put it back on since it doesn't fit, Conan deduces that the killer took her shoes away to hide how he was tracking and attacking girls with similar footwear. Since all of the girls attacked were gyarus, he also deduces that Aizawa was using platform boots, which are very popular among them. Sato hears this and says that a year ago, in the incident that took the life of little Akira Sakurai, Aizawa was supposedly wearing platform footwear; the boy's parents told this to the judge and said that was the reason why Aizawa didn't step properly on the brake and ended up hitting him. Supposedly wearing these boots cause the brake to take longer time. Megure sends out Takagi to find more info about the accident, and then tells the others to seek for the culprit who is still not too far from them.

After discussing some more details, Takagi returns and confirms the information already given. Conan and Ran see that Sonoko isn't with them; Ran mentions that Sonoko was supposed to go to the car and then to the restroom, and then Conan realizes that Sonoko was wearing platform boots, like all the victims. Ran calls Sonoko to her cellphone, and Sonoko says she's looking for a safe way out since the lights are out.

=== Resolution ===
<spoiler>The killer was, effectively, the guard '''Yoshio Sadakane'''. He was the father of little Akira Sakurai, whose different surname was his mother's maiden name whom he took up when his parents got divorced.

Conan found out that Sadakane had to be the culprit since he worked at the guard in charge of the parking site, so he could take his time to observe the people driving around and see if they were wearing platform boots. Sadakane thought that Aizawa's use of such footwear was the cause why she couldn't stop in time and hit Akira, so he targetted young women, all of them Gyaru, who wore it. By coincidence, Sonoko had been given a pair, hence why he targetted her despite not being a Gyaru.

The girls were all around 150 cms. tall, but reached 160 cms with the boots on, whcih confused the police since the three surviving victims said they were attacked by "someone around their height". Aizawa and the other girls were attacked either in the open or in the parking lot not just because of Sadakane's connections, but also because Aizawa was a minor when she fatally struck Akira down, thus he had no way to find out where she lived or what her name was, due to the law. He first waited for a woman who fitted her physical description, and when he didn't find her, he broke down and attacked any girl with platform shoes that he saw driving, with Aizawa being the last one almost by accident.

Sonoko then gets scared since it looks like she's being followed, and as she turns, the culprit is right in front of her and she starts screaming. Sonoko manages to avoid the culprit's pipe and throws her phone at him, revealing his face which of course, it's Sadakane. She tries running downstairs, with the man being horrified since she saw him clearly. Conan says that the killer saw Sonoko with Kogoro's keys and mistook her for the driver, hence why he's chasing her now. Sonoko's phone lands near a purikura machine located near a restaurant in the tenth floor, so they deduce Sonoko and the killer are not too far away from it. Megure takes active part in commanding the police, and both Matsumoto and Kogoro notice how pumped up he is.

Sonoko runs aimlessly in the tenth floor, and when she's about to reach the gates she trips over her boots and falls to the ground. Ran and the police find her phone on the stairs and deduce she's in the apartment store as no one has seen her in the restaurants. Meanwhile, the maddened killer starts ranting about how all the fashionable girls are bitches in sheep's clothing who should be all killed. Sonoko screams again and this time Ran, Conan, Megure, and co. hear her. They also hear the sound of several things falling, Go stones among them, which allow them to see she's now on the fourth floor, the only one with such arrangments.

Sonoko again dodges the pipe, as Sadakane rants about how he only wanted to teach her a lesson, but after seeing his face, he had to kill her. Cornered again, Sonoko cowers as he tries to hit her directly, and then Megure shows up. He takes the hit for her and gets struck in the head, but the blow is softened by his hat.

The bleeding but still conscious Megure asks the man if hurting others feels good. He tells to the man's shock that Sonoko is just a high school girl who was putting her thing in the car and not a driver with platform shoes. Then he lectures to Sadakane, calling him out on how he thinks he's following justice and revenge, yet aside of killing Aizawa he has only harmed innocent girls who had nothing to do with the incident that robbed him of his son, thus acting only out of petty rage and will to harm others. Sadakane falls to his knees, saying that he started by wanting for "that woman" (Aizawa) to wear "decent" shoes and apologize to his son in Heaven, and breaks down in tears. Ran arrives and comforts Sonoko, then Sato and Conan come in and see Megure injured but he insists it's nothing.

Later at the hospital, Matsumoto reveals a case in the past explaining why Megure was so anxious and reluctant to use a decoy, as well as the origin of a scar that he covers with his omnipresent hat, the case that Kogoro and Matsumoto himself were speaking about. Twenty years ago, a man was attacking school-aged girls with long skirts after having been bullied into insanity by [[wikipedia:Sukeban|delinquent schoolgirls]], whose trademark in Japan is the use of long school skirts. he started by trying to just scare the girls off, but then he became increasingly violent and killed at least one of them by running her over with his car.

After the female students from the area stopped wearing said long skirts, the crimes stopped; but a while later, a delinquent schoolgirl willingly went to the police and said she wanted to become a decoy, since she was the best friend of the murdered girl and wanted the culprit to be caught. The police didn't like the idea, but she refuse to back off. She was very rebellious and insisted to do what she wanted in these regards, so Matsumoto assigned the rookie Megure as her bodyguard.

One rainy night, the culprit tried to run the decoy girl and Megure over with his car. Both of them were badly injured, specially the girl, who took the brunt of the impact despite Megure's efforts. He still got to identify the culprit's car number, which was "新宿-57, と 66-12" (Shinjuku-57, To 66-12), leading to his capture.

Ran and Sonoko are moved to tears, thinking that the decoy girl died. Matsumoto laughs and says he never said she passed away... and then a dark-haired woman shows up. As she and Matsumoto make small talk, Conan notices that she has a rather big scar on her forehead; then they hear Megure's voice asking for the help of someone named Midori, and the woman replies to his call. They deduce that after the decoy stunt, Midori married Megure, and not only he covers the scar with his hat to keep others from seeing it, but to avoid being teased for marrying a woman much younger than him and with such a rebellious past.</spoiler>

== Trivia ==
* This is the last episode of the 20th Century.
* Except for Sonoko, all of the women attacked by the culprit have dark skin and bleached hair. They were members of a Japanese subculture known as [[Wikipedia: Gyaru|Gyaru]], in which young women rebel against the very conservative Japanese society by bleaching their hair, adquiring deep tans, and more often than not behaving like fashionable wild party girls without much concern for the future. Such a subgroup and its equivalents are viewed in contempt by lots of Japanese people, who accuse them of being selfish, materialistic and shallow. This is seen in Haruyoshi Shirakawa's words about Noriyuki Shirakawa dating a "girl without a clean state", and how everyone comments that the girls were wearing skimpy clothes in the freezing winter.
: Kogoro doesn't seem to be very aware about the Gyarus, as he only comments that "the girls looked like they were living in the jungle or something", alluding to their unnatural tans, and adds that "they just don't look like normal Japanese people". Then Sonoko correctly identifies the girls as part of the Gyaru, referring to them by their more popular nickname "ganguro". Sato adds that Endou, the second victim, is actually a "yamanba", a Gyaru/ganguro with specially dark skin.
* A parallel is made between the Gyaru girls and young female delinquent schoolgirls, known as [[Wikipedia: Sukeban Sukeban|Sukeban Sukeban]] ([http://noriyaro.com/?p=5045 girl delinquents]). Said school girls are identified by, among other things, wearing their school skirts much longer than usual. Ran and Conan accompany Kogoro to Shiki Island, a very superstitious island, where many of the residents believe in local legends. Kogoro was invited here to make a speech about a ghost ship that had been lost at sea seven years before. Kogoro arrives on stage completely drunk. A miniature bomb explodes, nearly killing him.

Conan proves that Kogoro did not kill the caretaker. Next, Conan enters the cave to show that the sounds were from the wind in the tunnels. But before he can Suzu finds him and threatens to tell, unless conan kisses her that is. So after a quick peck on the cheek they both head into the cave. Conan finds a staircase which breaks away to reveal another dead man and the killer. Conan deduces that the ghost ship was stuck in this part of the cave for seven years due to a cave-in. Conan finds the gold hidden in the bricks of the staircase covered in moss. Another cave-in occurs, forcing Conan and the killer to leave. The gold is sealed inside the cave.

<spoiler>The culprit is '''Goro Kinoshita'''. Kouji Hamada was originally one of the Ryuujinmaru’s shipmates who killed the captain and threw Uehara, who was also a crew member of the Ryujinmaru, overboard to keep the gold for himself and set up an identity as the island's new lighthouse keeper, whose name is apparently '''Aoki'''. Kinoshita captured and tortured him for the ship's location, later killing him. He then attempted to frame Kogoro for the murder, to no avail as Conan as Kogoro proved his innocence. He then killed Uehara to prevent him from getting the spoils as well.

Conan deduces the gunshot wound he received from Uehara was in fact self-inflicted, the evidence is his scorched skin that had been scorched, and that there was a gunpowder burn, indicating indirect close range fire. For Uehara the gunshot was on the wrong side of his head, including the gun that placed in the wrong hand. Shortly after, Conan after distracting Kinoshita kicks one of the bricks on the floor knocking him out. As the same time revealing the "bricks" were actually the gold along, as the gold had been covered in moss due to it being hidden in the cave for so long.

His motive was for the missing billion yen gold on the Shiki Island Ghost Ship. The gold however was buried in the rubble thus allowing the islanders to live in peace believing their debt had been paid and the curse was over.</spoiler>

=== Situation ===
Heiji invites Conan, Ran, and Kogoro to visit him in [[Wikipedia: Osaka|Osaka]], taking them on a sightseeing tour. In a restaurant, they run into Kazuha Toyama, Heiji's childhood friend, who appears to be jealous of Ran, asking her if she's "that Kudo girl" that Heiji keeps talking about and telling Ran to back off, because Heiji and her have been "joined by steel" for ages. Ran laughs and explains herself and the two girls hit it off. After finishing their meal, Kazuha joins them on their exploration of the city, but, as they leave the restaurant, a dead body falls from the roof of the building, hitting Kogoro's rental car.

The police arrive and quickly realise that this newest victim, a man in his forties, has been killed in the same fashion as two other people who died a few days earlier, by being stabbed in the heart through their wallets.

Eventually, they discover that the victims as well as MP Goji all attended the same driving school and were involved in a fatal accident 20 years prior. Heiji, who makes the discovery, decides to confront the MP.
Conan joins Ran and Kazuha who tell him that Osaka Police have discovered the hiding place of a criminal on the run, and that they suspect said criminal, Kiichiro Numabuchi, to be involved in the murders.

Yusuke's father Tetsuji was a driving instructor who died in an accident 20 years ago. Six of his students had played a prank on him by plying him with alcohol, and he suffered a fatal car crash. The students involved in the fatal prank were the four murder victims, MP Sotaro Goshi, and the escaped convict Numabuchi. They had done so because he was always strict with them and they hated that, all they wanted to do was scare him a little not kill him.

Sakata says he had always wondered about his father's death, he was usually a very careful driver. When he stumbled upon Numabuchi after he had escaped from prison, the latter got frightened and asked "Instructor Inaba" immediately for forgiveness, confusing Yusuke with his father. Yusuke heard the true story behind his father's death and forced Numabuchi to stay in the hut in the forest, planning to take revenge on the other five students before eventually framing Numabuchi for the murders, and making his death look like a suicide.

Both Heiji and Sakata manage to escape blaze and are taken to the hospital, however before being taken to the hospital Sakata talks to Ginshiro Toyama about everything that’s happened. When suddenly Sotaro Goshi tries to attack Sakata after learning he had killed his friends and was after him as well, but is stopped by Ginshiro who states that they need to have a conversation about his past, leaving Goshi hanging his head in shame.

=== Aftermath ===
Heiji after being rescued from the burning shack and is rushed to hospital, accompanied by a panicked Kazuha, Ran and Conan. He wakes up in the ambulance, and says he couldn't just let Sakata die as "some idiot told me once that a detective who doesn't do anything when a culprit, confronted with his deductions, commits suicide, is just as guilty of murder", and Conan is stunned that Heiji remembers him saying that. Heiji closes his eyes again, exhausted, and Kazuha starts to cry, believing he is about to die. Her sobs wake an angry Heiji up, he yells that he was just trying to sleep and she should stop being "so noisy". Smirking, Kazuha "accidentally" leans over Heiji and digs her elbow into his bullet wound. They bicker all the way to the hospital.</spoiler>

Ran and Conan accompany Kogoro to Shiki Island, a very superstitious island, where many of the residents believe in local legends. Kogoro was invited here to make a speech about a ghost ship that had been lost at sea seven years before. Kogoro arrives on stage completely drunk. A miniature bomb explodes, nearly killing him.

Conan finds a staircase which breaks away to reveal another dead man and the killer. Conan deduces that the ghost ship was stuck in this part of the cave for seven years due to a cave-in. Conan finds the gold hidden in the bricks of the staircase covered in moss. Another cave-in occurs, forcing Conan and the killer to leave. The gold is sealed inside the cave.

Kouji Hamada was originally one of the Ryuujinmaru’s shipmates who killed the captain and threw Uehara, who was also a crew member of the Ryujinmaru, overboard to keep the gold for himself and set up an identity as the island's new lighthouse keeper, whose name is apparently '''Aoki'''. Kinoshita captured and tortured him for the ship's location, later killing him. He then attempted to frame Kogoro for the murder, to no avail as Conan as Kogoro proved his innocence. He then killed Uehara to prevent him from getting the spoils as well.

Conan deduces the gunshot wound he received from Uehara was in fact self-inflicted, the evidence is his scorched skin that had been scorched, and that there was a gunpowder burn, indicating indirect close range fire. For Uehara the gunshot was on the wrong side of his head, including the gun that placed in the wrong hand. Shortly after, Conan after distracting Kinoshita kicks one of the bricks on the floor knocking him out. As the same time revealing the "bricks" were actually the gold along, as the gold had been covered in moss due to it being hidden in the cave for so long.

His motive was for the missing billion yen gold on the Shiki Island Ghost Ship. The gold however was buried in the rubble thus allowing the islanders to live in peace believing their debt had been paid and the curse was over.</spoiler>

When a famous samurai movie star, Kozaburo Hijikata, hires Kogoro for some consultations, the group is led to believe that he wants to learn about detective work for an upcoming TV series where he is to star as a detective. However, rumors of an affair between his beautiful and much younger wife Isami Nagakura and stunt actor Hajime Okita can't help but lead Conan to doubt the reason. When Isami is found dead on Okita's balcony, the group believes it is an open and shut case, but Conan doubts the authenticity when he sees a big smile form on Hijikata's face. Which side is truly right?

<spoiler>The culprit is '''Kozaburo Hijikata'''. Hijikata not only killed Isami since she cheated on him, but because of her life insurance which he needed to cash in on due to his upcoming bankruptcy. As such, he purchased three apartments with exactly the same furnishing, but in different floors of the same building; via tampering a little with the elevator numbers, he managed to trick Conan, Kogoro, and Ran. They ended up going to the sixth floor instead of the fifth, Hijikata had tampered with elevator by blacking out the bottom left line of the number display, with this he successfully turned the number six into number five.

And for the second floor number he kept their attention away by standing in front of the digital display, and handing out his business cards by forcing their heads down. Said apartment was right next to the one where Hijikata strangled Isami and left her body to be found by having her body hung with thread which he rigged to snap and caused her body to fall at the right time. With some rope he lowered Isami's lifeless body in the balcony below where her body was actually found. Which explains why Isami's body was found outside the balcony rather than halfway out the door like everyone had witnessed earlier.

In reality the room where Isami had supposedly been murdered was actually empty all along as the room belonged to Hijikata, so it was simple for him to have set up this trick. He also switched the room number tags to give the illusion that they were on the fifth floor but they were actually on the sixth. After lowering Isami’s body he switched the room tags back and waited outside the real room on the fifth floor. He also told Kogoro and the others to take the stairs because they were faster, but in reality it was because the altered elevator display hadn't been cleaned yet and he did not want them to find out about it.

The proof that Conan needed was a prop pistol that Kogoro accidentally broke in one of the apartments, and which he hid under a couch pillow; the model gun was found in the couch in the room on the sixth floor, proving that Kogoro and the others were taken to the sixth floor not the fifth. When the fingerprints are lifted off the model gun it will prove that Kogoro and the others had been on the sixth floor, as Hijikata wiped all their fingerprints from everything except the model gun. Faced with this evidence he admits his guilt stating he did this because Isami had been cheating on him and he needed her insurance money. In the end Hijikata is confident stating that the court will not charge him because he is a celebrity but Megure states he believes otherwise.</spoiler>
