Aoko has been [[Kaito Kuroba|Kaito]]'s best friend ever since they were young children, much like [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] and [[Shinichi Kudo|Shinichi]] in Detective Conan. Aoko currently attends Ekoda High School as a second-year student in class 2-B along with Kaito, [[Keiko Momoi|Keiko]], [[Akako Koizumi|Akako]], and [[Saguru Hakuba|Hakuba]]. Aoko dislikes the [[Kaitou Kid]] for making a mockery of her father, [[Ginzo Nakamori]], but is unaware that Kid is actually her best friend in disguise.

Aoko has a temperamental personality, sweet and gentle at one moment, then boisterous and fiery at the next. Like her father, she is impulsive, easily riled up, and often shouts. Kaito and Kaitou Kid in particular are often the trigger for bouts of loud, violent displays. She also has a mischievous side, using Kaito's weakness for fish to get revenge on him for harassing her.

Aoko has a tendency to refer to herself in the third-person, which is considered 'cutesy' and childish in Japan. She is also shown to dress rather childishly, in skirts and cardigans when she's not in her school uniform.

Aoko is shown to be very intelligent. However, she may also have rather low self-esteem. Once, to prove that Kaito wasn't the Kid, she asked him out on date on the day of a Kid heist. Prior to the heist in Volume 3, Chapter 3, Hakuba seems to flirt with Aoko after Kaito turns down Aoko's offer to go to the Prince Prince concert. Hakuba and Kaito then make a bet that if Hakuba manages to catch Kid then Hakuba will go to the concert with Aoko, and if he fails to capture the thief, Kaito will go instead. Aoko hates the [[Kaitou Kid]] for humiliating her father, [[Ginzo Nakamori]]. This is partly why Kaito has to go to such lengths to keep his identity hidden from her. However, Kaito has come under suspicion of being the Kaitou Kid several times. In one instance, Aoko went to great lengths to prove Kaito innocent: she asked him out on the day the heist was supposed to take place, and then during the actual time of the heist she handcuffed Kaito to her. Kaito, however, was able to escape and use a dummy to fool Aoko into thinking that he had been with her the entire time.

Aoko frequently attends Kaitou Kid heists, similar to how [[Ran Mouri]] attends many of her father's mystery cases. Kaito has not had to prove his 'innocence' to her recently, which suggests that she now 'trusts' him.

Kaito is a second-year student at Ekoda High School Class 2-B alongside his childhood friend [[Aoko Nakamori]], the witch [[Akako Koizumi]], and transfer student detective [[Saguru Hakuba]]. Kaito discovers his father's identity as the original [[Kaitou Kid]] after eight years following his death thanks to a secret room inside his house as well as talking with his father's attendant and friend, Kono ofsuke Jii. Wanting to pick up where Jii left off, Kaito continues to be Kaitou Kid in an effort to lure out [[Magic Kaito Organization|his father's murderers]] by making Kid a world-famous thief once again.

Kaito as his normal self seems to be rather popular in school although he tends to get in trouble with the ladies, particularly Aoko, for flipping up their skirts or peeking on them in the locker room. He is a compulsive trickster who loves to demonstrate his magic tricks and share them with others, and hates to see people upset. ===Magic Kaito===
The day after the Kaitou Kid makes his return after an eight-year hiatus, Kaito stumbles through a trap door in his room and discovers that his father, [[Toichi Kuroba]], was the original Kaitou Kid. Kaito dons his father's costume to discover the identity of the new Kaitou Kid, revealed to be his father's old assistant [[Konosuke Jii]]. Jii tells Kaito that Toichi had been murdered eight years ago, and that he had dressed as the Kid and staged the heist in order to lure Toichi's killers.

So Kaito adopts the mantle of the Kid, having proven that he is more skilled than the aging and serious Jii. As the Kaitou Kid, Kaito stages several high-profile jewel heists with the intention of smoking out his father's killers (although he seems to be enjoying himself in the process). It isn't until the ''Blue Birthday'' heist that the murderers appear and reveal that they are searching for the doublet red-coloured gem [[Pandora]], said to shed tears of immortality during the passing of a particular comet. Since then, he has appeared in several Detective Conan cases. In other instances, Kid has staged heists when people such as [[Jirokichi Suzuki]] have called him out, or when criminals have used the Kaitou Kid's name to deflect blame from themselves, as in the Sunset Mansion case or the Seiran case. He also appeared in the Ryoma case to expose several counterfeiters who were pretending to possess items that another thief called the Phantom Lady had stolen years ago. A young Kaito also appeared in a flashback during which Conan recalled a riddle that he and Ran had tried to solve when they were in first grade. It turned out that the 'riddler' had been the original Kaitou Kid, [[Toichi Kuroba]], who seemed to be a friend of [[Yusaku Kudo]].

In chapter 824, Kid had played a significant role in main Detective Conan plot by disguising as Sherry under Conan's request. Their plan successfully tricked the Black Organization into believing she is dead.

In [[The Lost Ship in the Sky]], it's revealed that Kaito knew Conan's real identity of Shinichi Kudo. He helped Conan who was thrown out of the airship and they worked together to get back. Kaito has disguised himself as Shinichi three times, in [[The Last Wizard of the Century]], in [[Magician of the Silver Sky]], and in [[The Lost Ship in the Sky]] which led Sato and Takagi to suspect that Shinichi was Kaitou Kid. The two later share their suspicion with Heiji to which he responded with an 'Are you kidding me?' face.

:Kaito and [[Aoko Nakamori]] have been best friends since they were little and first met at the clock tower. They are portrayed as a similar pairing to [[Shinichi Kudo]] and [[Ran Mouri]] (including how the characters are drawn), except much sillier. Kaito often teases Aoko by flipping her skirt. However, it has been seen that Kaito is quite protective of Aoko and doesn't appear to want her to go on a date with [[Saguru Hakuba]]. Aoko was somewhat suspicious that Kaito was actually Kaitou Kid, and in order to prove his innocence, she brought him along to a movie when a heist had been scheduled. She handcuffed him to the seat, but Kaito managed to escape and pull off the heist, thus veering Aoko's suspicions away from him. The two appear to have feelings for each other, but neither has admitted it as of yet.

The relationship between Hakuba and Kaito is a rather tense one; since Hakuba convinced himself early on that Kaito was instead Kid, and during the first few volumes he's constantly throwing out offhand comments that show his suspicion. Ever since Kaito met Conan, Kaito always seems to be anticipating Conan's appearance at his heists. As he said before, Conan makes the heists so exciting, as both of them are geniuses, one is a thief who creates puzzles while the detective unravels them. Conan views Kaito's heists as entertainment, since the crimes and mysteries he solves are getting a bit boring.{{citation needed}} However, Kaito dislikes when Conan unravels his tricks before he demonstrates them or when Conan gives him payback for a particularly troublesome trick. Despite this, Conan and Kaito have a friendly rivalry. Kaito sometimes helps Conan whenever he's in trouble; Kaito has helped Conan solve crimes and protect Conan's friends. Conan sometimes lets Kaito escape for various reasons, never telling the police about him, though sometimes not before getting a little revenge. Conan once said that "If Kaitou Kid is to disappear, it would become boring", yet Conan also says he will be the one to catch Kaitou Kid, and put him behind the bars. In the manga and anime, Kaito knows Conan is far smarter than an average grade school boy, but it unclear if Kaito knows Conan is the shrunken teenage Shinichi. In the movies, Kaito knows Conan is Shinichi from the events of [[Movie 3]]. Both Conan and Kaito have nicknames for one another. "Great Detective-kun" is Kaito's nickname for Conan and "Kid" is Conan's nickname for Kaito.

Ran is a childhood friend of [[Shinichi Kudo]]. She is the daughter of [[Kogoro Mouri]], a private detective, and [[Eri Kisaki]], a lawyer. Her parents got separated when she was seven,<ref name="m2">[[The Fourteenth Target|Movie 2: The Fourteenth Target]]</ref> and one of her biggest goals is to get them back together. Her best friend next to Shinichi is her classmate [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]], who constantly teases her about her relationship with Shinichi.

One year before the series' start, Ran and Shinichi had gone to the United States to visit Shinichi's parents in New York. They met [[Yukiko Kudo|his mother]] and her actress friend, [[Sharon Vineyard]] (also known as Vermouth, a member of the [[Black Organization]]). Later that evening, Vermouth disguised as a serial killer to do BO work, and was saved by Ran and Shinichi who encountered her on their way back from a show turned murder case. Vermouth had slipped and would have fallen to her death, but Ran caught her arm and Shinichi helped her pull her to safety. == Personality ==
Ran's greatest personality trait is that she genuinely cares for those she loves. She is also patient, kind, and nurturing. Like Shinichi, she highly values justice to the point of idealism. To avoid making Shinichi choose between her and his important case (really an excuse because Shinichi has turned into Conan and can't return), she has decided to wait for him to finish it, trusting his promise that he will come back despite their separation causing Ran a lot of emotional pain. Ran is also very hot-blooded and tends to act on impulses when the people she cares about are involved; the combination of jumping to conclusions and not hesitating to use karate on those who she perceives to have wronged someone have led to several "near-miss" misunderstandings. Early on, she would become violently suspicious if she thought Shinichi was philandering although more recently his confessions have lead her to trust his intentions.

She can be very brave and resourceful when she wants to be, and rescues Conan from trouble on occasion. However, she has an irrational fear of the supernatural and is thus - unlike her friend Sonoko - absolutely no fan of anything related to the horror genre.<ref name="e274">[[Truth About the Haunted House|Episode 274-275: Truth About the Haunted House]]</ref> She also constantly tries to reunite her father and mother again - though with little success, thanks to the mutual stubbornness of both parents. She handles many of the Mouri household's financial affairs and all the cooking and housework. She also ensures Kogoro doesn't slack off on his job, is on his best behavior for client meetings, and she often greets and provides refreshments for potential clients.

She appreciates fine art. Ran is noted by both Shinichi and Shuichi Akai to cry a lot. This claim has been attributed to the manga file called "Ran's Tears".

Ran's most notable trait is her great prowess in martial arts; she is highly skilled if not masterful in karate and is also well-trained by her father in Judo. == Plot overview ==
=== Doubts about Conan's identity ===
In time, Ran comes to suspect that Conan is actually Shinichi despite what her common sense would say, but he always manages to trick her and prove her wrong. There are, however, occasions where she appears to be sure that Shinichi and Conan are one and the same.

The first time Ran suspects Conan is episode 7. After seeing how Conan, like Shinichi, can deduce someone's occupation by just touching the person's hand, Ran becomes very suspicious and keeps an eye on Conan during the whole case. However, Professor Agasa calls Ran with the voice changing bowtie at the end, freeing Conan of suspicion for a while.

Another time, when Ran finds Conan asleep on the sofa, she takes off his glasses and notices the striking resemblance he has to Shinichi as a child. She later confronts Conan about this resemblance, his similar powers of deduction, and even his shared lack of any musical knowledge. However, Shinichi's mother unexpectedly shows up and covers for Conan by explaining that Conan resembles Shinichi because they are distant relatives and that Conan possesses Shinichi's deductive ability because he admires Shinichi and learns from him.

Despite apologizing to Conan for doubting him, Ran does not lose her suspicions, but keeps them to herself for awhile.<ref>[[An Infatuated Heart|Volume 26, File 254: "An Infatuated Heart"]]</ref> When Conan is critically injured and requires a blood donation, Ran donates her blood without hesitation, knowing she and Shinichi share the same rare blood type. Since this act proves Ran's suspicions are correct, with the help of [[Ai Haibara]], Conan manages to fool Ran by allowing Shinichi to appear before her while Conan (Ai Haibara in disguise) is present.

Right after sending the message, Conan's phone starts vibrating. Ran, quite perplexed by the perfect timing, checks his phone only to discover a new email (she hasn't seen the content yet). At that moment, Conan enters the room, and seeing his phone in Ran's hands, rushes towards it while shouting and grabs it back asking: "''Did you look?''". He quickly understands that Ran's email may have risen doubts about his identity.<ref name="e398">[[The Weird Family's Commission|Episode 398-399: The Weird Family's Commission]]</ref>

Following this event, Ran first believes that Shinichi often contacts Conan without her knowing, which would in some way explain how he always seems to help out on cases. Later on, after seeing Conan give an important clue to the investigation team without making use of his cell phone (to eventually contact Shinichi like she was suspecting), she starts to believe that Conan is actually Shinichi thinking that past occurrences of both being present at the same time was just a trick he used to fool her.<ref name="e398" />

At the end of the day, Ran is able to retrieve Conan's phone. Late at night, after waiting for everybody to go to bed, she tries to get past the phone's PIN code to check whether her email is there or not. This, to her, would be undeniable proof that Conan is indeed Shinichi. After finally guessing the number equivalent of "Sherlock" to be the PIN code, she's surprised not to see her email there. She instantly tries a few times to resend another email but nothing comes up on Conan's phone. That's when Shinichi calls her complaining about the numerous emails she's been sending. Conan, then knocks at the door and claims back his phone saying that he didn't want people looking inside because of messages he received from a girl he likes. It is later showed that Conan actually exchanged his phone with Agasa's (which are both of the same model) and used his phone upstairs to call Ran, while she was experimenting with the Professor's phone, to create this whole alibi. Shinichi then tells Ran that she now knows his phone number. And Ran, pleased with the situation, clears her mind out of all suspicions she had about Conan's identity<ref>[[Ran's Suspicions|Episode 400: Ran's Suspicions]]</ref> - at least, consciously.

During "The Whereabouts of the Embarrassing Charm" case we can see that Ran's suspicions are arising again. This is thanks to Heiji, openly revealed the fingerprint matching during the "Murder, Shinichi Kudo" case. Kazuha gave a likely, but not to Conan or Heiji, explanation on how Shinichi's fingerprints got onto the handcuff's piece of chain. However, for some reason Ran talked directly to Conan, which he pointed out that she is talking to the wrong person. Unconsciously she thinks she is talking to Shinichi.

In manga chapter 814, Conan and the girls solve a case similar to one [[Yusaku Kudo]] abandoned 10 years ago. While explaining the solution, Conan talks so convincingly that Ran feels a strong impression that Shinichi is the one speaking. It unnerves her to the point where she stops Conan, but he states that he's only reading Shinichi's e-mail.

Ran is a childhood friend of [[Shinichi Kudo]]. She is the daughter of [[Kogoro Mouri]], a private detective, and [[Eri Kisaki]], a lawyer. Her parents got separated when she was seven,<ref name="m2">[[The Fourteenth Target|Movie 2: The Fourteenth Target]]</ref> and one of her biggest goals is to get them back together. Her best friend next to Shinichi is her classmate [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]], who constantly teases her about her relationship with Shinichi.

One year before the series' start, Ran and Shinichi had gone to the United States to visit Shinichi's parents in New York. They met [[Yukiko Kudo|his mother]] and her actress friend, [[Sharon Vineyard]] (also known as Vermouth, a member of the [[Black Organization]]). Later that evening, Vermouth disguised as a serial killer to do BO work, and was saved by Ran and Shinichi who encountered her on their way back from a show turned murder case. Vermouth had slipped and would have fallen to her death, but Ran caught her arm and Shinichi helped her pull her to safety. == Personality ==
Ran's greatest personality trait is that she genuinely cares for those she loves. She is also patient, kind, and nurturing. Like Shinichi, she highly values justice to the point of idealism. To avoid making Shinichi choose between her and his important case (really an excuse because Shinichi has turned into Conan and can't return), she has decided to wait for him to finish it, trusting his promise that he will come back despite their separation causing Ran a lot of emotional pain. Ran is also very hot-blooded and tends to act on impulses when the people she cares about are involved; the combination of jumping to conclusions and not hesitating to use karate on those who she perceives to have wronged someone have led to several "near-miss" misunderstandings. Early on, she would become violently suspicious if she thought Shinichi was philandering although more recently his confessions have lead her to trust his intentions.

She can be very brave and resourceful when she wants to be, and rescues Conan from trouble on occasion. However, she has an irrational fear of the supernatural and is thus - unlike her friend Sonoko - absolutely no fan of anything related to the horror genre.<ref name="e274">[[Truth About the Haunted House|Episode 274-275: Truth About the Haunted House]]</ref> She also constantly tries to reunite her father and mother again - though with little success, thanks to the mutual stubbornness of both parents. She is also considered very attractive as many men tend to pay her a lot of undue romantic attention, a fact which Ran herself is usually unaware of or tries ignore due to her strong personal feelings towards Shinichi. Even though Ran is in love with Shinichi, she often fails to convey her feelings because she suddenly becomes self conscious.

Ran is very self sufficient for her age. This is because her father is drunk, slovenly, and fiscally irresponsible. She handles many of the Mouri household's financial affairs and all the cooking and housework. She also ensures Kogoro doesn't slack off on his job, is on his best behavior for client meetings, and she often greets and provides refreshments for potential clients.

She appreciates fine art. Ran is noted by both Shinichi and Shuichi Akai to cry a lot. This claim has been attributed to the manga file called "Ran's Tears".

Ran's most notable trait is her great prowess in martial arts; she is highly skilled if not masterful in karate and is also well-trained by her father in Judo. Ran is the captain and ace of the karate team of Teitan High School.<ref>[[Volume 1#File 001 - The Heisei Holmes|Volume 1, File 1: "The Heisei Holmes"]]</ref> She has further demonstrated her great might as she has won many tournaments; she holds the title of Regional Champion for her age group. === Doubts about Conan's identity ===
In time, Ran comes to suspect that Conan is actually Shinichi despite what her common sense would say, but he always manages to trick her and prove her wrong. There are, however, occasions where she appears to be sure that Shinichi and Conan are one and the same.

The first time Ran suspects Conan is episode 7. After seeing how Conan, like Shinichi, can deduce someone's occupation by just touching the person's hand, Ran becomes very suspicious and keeps an eye on Conan during the whole case. However, Professor Agasa calls Ran with the voice changing bowtie at the end, freeing Conan of suspicion for a while.

Another time, when Ran finds Conan asleep on the sofa, she takes off his glasses and notices the striking resemblance he has to Shinichi as a child. She later confronts Conan about this resemblance, his similar powers of deduction, and even his shared lack of any musical knowledge. However, Shinichi's mother unexpectedly shows up and covers for Conan by explaining that Conan resembles Shinichi because they are distant relatives and that Conan possesses Shinichi's deductive ability because he admires Shinichi and learns from him.

Despite apologizing to Conan for doubting him, Ran does not lose her suspicions, but keeps them to herself for awhile.<ref>[[An Infatuated Heart|Volume 26, File 254: "An Infatuated Heart"]]</ref> When Conan is critically injured and requires a blood donation, Ran donates her blood without hesitation, knowing she and Shinichi share the same rare blood type. Since this act proves Ran's suspicions are correct, with the help of [[Ai Haibara]], Conan manages to fool Ran by allowing Shinichi to appear before her while Conan (Ai Haibara in disguise) is present.

Right after sending the message, Conan's phone starts vibrating. Ran, quite perplexed by the perfect timing, checks his phone only to discover a new email (she hasn't seen the content yet). At that moment, Conan enters the room, and seeing his phone in Ran's hands, rushes towards it while shouting and grabs it back asking: "''Did you look?''". He quickly understands that Ran's email may have risen doubts about his identity.<ref name="e398">[[The Weird Family's Commission|Episode 398-399: The Weird Family's Commission]]</ref>

Following this event, Ran first believes that Shinichi often contacts Conan without her knowing, which would in some way explain how he always seems to help out on cases. Later on, after seeing Conan give an important clue to the investigation team without making use of his cell phone (to eventually contact Shinichi like she was suspecting), she starts to believe that Conan is actually Shinichi thinking that past occurrences of both being present at the same time was just a trick he used to fool her.<ref name="e398" />

At the end of the day, Ran is able to retrieve Conan's phone. Late at night, after waiting for everybody to go to bed, she tries to get past the phone's PIN code to check whether her email is there or not. This, to her, would be undeniable proof that Conan is indeed Shinichi. After finally guessing the number equivalent of "Sherlock" to be the PIN code, she's surprised not to see her email there. She instantly tries a few times to resend another email but nothing comes up on Conan's phone. That's when Shinichi calls her complaining about the numerous emails she's been sending. Conan, then knocks at the door and claims back his phone saying that he didn't want people looking inside because of messages he received from a girl he likes. It is later showed that Conan actually exchanged his phone with Agasa's (which are both of the same model) and used his phone upstairs to call Ran, while she was experimenting with the Professor's phone, to create this whole alibi. Shinichi then tells Ran that she now knows his phone number. And Ran, pleased with the situation, clears her mind out of all suspicions she had about Conan's identity<ref>[[Ran's Suspicions|Episode 400: Ran's Suspicions]]</ref> - at least, consciously.

During "The Whereabouts of the Embarrassing Charm" case we can see that Ran's suspicions are arising again. This is thanks to Heiji, openly revealed the fingerprint matching during the "Murder, Shinichi Kudo" case. Kazuha gave a likely, but not to Conan or Heiji, explanation on how Shinichi's fingerprints got onto the handcuff's piece of chain. However, for some reason Ran talked directly to Conan, which he pointed out that she is talking to the wrong person. Unconsciously she thinks she is talking to Shinichi.

In manga chapter 814, Conan and the girls solve a case similar to one [[Yusaku Kudo]] abandoned 10 years ago. While explaining the solution, Conan talks so convincingly that Ran feels a strong impression that Shinichi is the one speaking. It unnerves her to the point where she stops Conan, but he states that he's only reading Shinichi's e-mail.

At the beginning of the Detective Conan series, Shinichi is a fairly famous high school detective who frequently helps the Tokyo police solve murder mysteries.

One day, Shinichi brings his friend [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] to a local theme park called [[Tropical Land]], to celebrate her victory in the Metropolitan Karate Championships. Shinichi witnesses a blackmail exchange between Vodka and a company president in a secluded area just outside the park, but is too engrossed to notice [[Gin]], Vodka's partner, sneak up from behind. Gin knocks him out and forces him to swallow a new experimental poison known as [[APTX 4869]], and they then leave him to die. Shinichi has a striking resemblance to his father, Yusaku Kudo, sporting the same dark brown hair, slightly paled skin, and facial structures. He has a keen eye for details, and can spot any "strange points", in a case that most people tend to ignore or not take into account. This comes from his photographic memory{{citation needed}}, of being able to remember every abstract of an investigation. Shinichi's fastidious attention to detail allows him to notice minor inconsistencies in crime scenes and suspect testimony, and using astute logic he uncovers the reasons behind those inconsistencies in order to link them to the crime. Shinichi has extraordinarily broad knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases; something he likely acquired from his incessant reading as a child.

Besides intelligence, Shinichi also has amazing athletic ability, partially derived from playing soccer, his favorite sport. In order to defend himself and others from criminals, Shinichi has perfected a signature, powerful precision kick to knockout criminals using soccer balls or whatever substitute is handy. Shinichi's kick is accurate over distances and he is capable of mentally reckoning the angle of impact necessary to rebound a soccer ball off a wall and strike an attacker from behind. He is also good at skiing and snowboarding.

Aside from soccer, Shinichi exhibits a knack for handling firearms due to his father taking him to firing ranges from time to time. During the Clocktower Heist, Shinichi is able to shoot and dislodge the support beam of a giant projection screen, which Kaitou Kid had placed in order to fool a crowd of onlookers, with a single shot from a moving helicopter.

Shinichi is nimble; in the manga he is capable of considerable acrobatics, jumping great distances and swinging from tree to tree to escape onlookers.<ref>Shiragami case</ref> The anime and movies augment Shinichi's athletic abilities in addition to what is shown in the manga. In the anime, Shinichi appears to have martial arts skill. Ran, despite being a practiced and acclaimed martial artist, claims no one has a better round house kick than Shinichi.{{citation needed}} He was able to skillfully dodge a kicking assault from an angry Ran, something very few have ever been able to do. Shinichi is also extremely fast and agile. == Plot overview ==
Because the main plot revolves around the fact that Shinichi has become 'Conan' and is forced into hiding, Shinichi himself appears rarely in the series. However, Conan is frequently shown calling Ran using his voice-changing bow tie to sound like Shinichi and sent/receive text messages from her under "Shinichi's" phone. In these instances, it can be said that the character of Shinichi, albeit in the body of Conan, is appearing, since these phone conversations and text messages allow Shinichi to be himself, however briefly.

Since then, Shinichi sometimes calls Ran over the telephone and imitates his normal voice with the [[voice-changing bowtie]] so that she doesn't worry about him. His parents are even more famous than he is, with Yusaku being a famous mystery novelist and Yukiko being a retired actress. They currently live in the United States and travel extensively, having left Shinichi in Japan on his own when he was fourteen. Though he sometimes finds his parents' carefree ways to be annoying, he loves them dearly. Yusaku is also a detective with the same keen eye for details, and similarly to Holmes' brother Mycroft, Yusaku always seems to solve a case one step ahead of his son.

Although not related by blood, there's a strong family-like bond between Shinichi and [[Hiroshi Agasa]]. Agasa was the first to know about Shinichi's shrinking predicament and was the one to tell him to keep it a secret. Most of the gadgets that Shinichi has were made by Agasa to help Shinichi catch the criminals and solve the cases as Conan. He also knows about Shinichi's romantic relationship with Ran and sometimes teases him about it in front of her (when Shinichi can't do anything about it since he is Conan).

Even though Heiji discovers Shinichi's secret, he decides to keep quiet (though he often slips up and calls him Kudo in front of others). They have solved many cases together, and Heiji is the person Shinichi turns to for advice or for confirmation regarding a deduction.

This is because of Yusaku, Shinichi's father, created and thus was the '''father''' of the moniker [[Kaitou Kid|Kaitou '''Kid''']], Toichi's secret identity. Toichi's son and successor, [[Kaito Kuroba|Kaito]], has also only crossed paths with Shinichi as Shinichi once, during the [[The_Gathering_of_the_Detectives!_Kudo_Shinichi_vs._Kaitou_Kid|Clocktower heist]]. Kaito thought Shinichi made the heist harder (and thus less boring) in [[Saguru Hakuba]]'s absence, and Shinichi found Kid's intention of 'stealing' the Clocktower in order to save it from demolition to be fairly admirable.

In their next encounter, however, after Shinichi had become Conan, Kid disguised himself as Ran in order to steal the Suzuki Black Star pearl. When Conan cornered him on the Suzuki cruise ship, Kid suggested that he'd stolen all of Ran's clothes to impersonate her, and left her naked on the deck. While this ended up being a bluff, Conan was shocked and infuriated. In subsequent encounters between Kid and Conan, Conan displays a much more intense desire to capture Kid. In several instances he appears to be able to 'sense' Kid's presence; knowing Kid is close by often causes Conan to behave far more frenetically. However, in several instances, beginning with the "Big Adventure in the Eccentric Residence" case, when Kid does Conan/Shinichi a favor, such as saving Genta's life in the aforementioned case, Conan reciprocates by halting his investigation just shy of capturing Kid, thereby allowing him to escape unhindered.

There are only a few characters in the series who know Conan's real identity and none have betrayed Conan's identity to date. [[Eisuke Hondou]], the younger brother of C.I.A. agent [[Hidemi Hondou]], also knows and keeps Conan's secret. However, Kid seems to know there is something unusual about Conan, as whenever he tries to publicly steal he usually reveals that he only wants to compete with Conan as thief and detective. Heiji is a high school detective, and the son of [[Heizo Hattori]], chief of the Osaka Police Department, and his wife [[Shizuka Hattori]]. Heiji wants to be a detective like his father, and he is also very skilled in kendo and has become a favored tournament contender for his school.

At one time during their childhood, Heiji had had the unfortunate idea of locking himself and his friend [[Kazuha Toyama|Kazuha]] together with a set of old handcuffs which had no key to unlock it; as a result they involuntarily had to spend time together even on some rather intimate occasions (i.e., bathroom visits) before the cuffs could be removed. As a reminder of this 'closeness' and for good luck, Kazuha fashioned two identical lucky charms, each incorporating a chain link from the cuffs, which she and Heiji have been wearing ever since.<ref name=StabbetWallet>Manga Volume 19: Files 185 (Stabbed Wallet Case)</ref>

In the news, Heiji has been publicly declared the "Great Detective of the West", while [[Shinichi Kudo]] is the "Great Detective of the East". As a result, Heiji showed up unannounced at the Mouri Detective Agency looking for Kudo, seeking to challenge his rival to a showdown of wits. (In fact, they had such a contest before, three years previously, during a skiing trip in the Yamagata prefecture, although they never learned about each other's identities at that time.<ref>Manga Chapters 518-522: Yuki-Onna Murder Case</ref>) Heiji was soundly defeated in the following case after [[Conan Edogawa]] temporarily turned back into Shinichi, but he gained a lot of respect for Shinichi in the process.<ref>Manga Chapters 092-096: The Great Detective Of The West</ref>.

During their second encounter, Conan knocked Heiji out to solve the on-going case, but during his final presentation of the facts, Heiji awoke prematurely and discovered Conan's secret, and in the end managed to blackmail Conan into revealing all. <ref>Manga Chapters 121: The Holmes Freak Case: The Revelation</ref> Ever since that revelation, Heiji has been helping Conan in hiding his secret identity, though he constantly slips up by calling him "Kudo" in front of [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] and Kazuha.

== Personality ==
Even while solving a case, Heiji tends to be lighthearted and good-humored, preferring to work through it with a grin on his face. He is a big fan of baseball, and is most of the time shown wearing an Osaka cap, to support the local Osaka baseball team. He usually wears his cap with its visor pointed backward, but if he feels challenged, he turns the visor forward.

Heiji is known for his pride as an Osaka citizen and for his thick Osakan accent, which has been pointed out and sometimes made fun numerous times. However, Heiji holds his head high and is always one to brag about the greatness of Osaka, especially when Conan comes to visit.

Despite him knowing the value and necessity of remaining calm in the face of a crime, Heiji tends to be impulsive at times, which tends to cloud his judgment a little. This was discussed directly in the "Detective Koushien" case, when [[Saguru Hakuba]] accused Heiji of being a poor detective for disrupting a crime scene in his rush to see if the victim could still be saved. Heiji, however, solved the case in the end, and reminded Saguru that the detective's first job is to prevent death if he can. Heiji is also known to be extremely protective of those he values as close friends, and tries hard to keep them out of harm. Furthermore, he's pretty much always watching Shinichi's back, and does whatever he can to not only keep Shinichi safe, but to keep his identity under cover. However, on one occasion Heiji advised Conan to tell the truth, when Ran had convinced herself that Conan was Shinichi and thus willingly gave him blood after being shot.

Although he is very competitive when it comes to detective cases, when a case gets hot, he and Shinichi work effectively together. Although he frequently mocks Kazuha for her superstitions and enthusiasm for good-luck charms, Heiji has several times revealed that he puts more trust in them than he would admit. He once dreamed of Shinichi being murdered, and out subsequently insisted that Conan wear his omamori, the good luck charm Kazuha gave him. == Appearance and Attributes ==
Heiji has dark brown, spiky hair and dark skin, and his eyes are normally dark green in the anime but are drawn as blue in the manga. He speaks with a strong Kansai Ben accent, which is typical of the Osaka region. One day, Conan (using his [[Voice-Changing Bowtie|Voice-Changer Tie]] to imitate [[Shinichi Kudo|his old voice]]) calls [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] to tell her once again that he is all right and that he is still stuck with the 'special case' when Ran hangs up on him as someone has just entered the detective agency. Coming home, Conan finds to his surprise that the 'customer' is a youth who keeps demanding to see Shinichi Kudo. When Ran mentions that Shinichi has just called, without asking about Ran's state, the youth deduces that Shinichi must actually be nearby, watching Ran from afar. He then introduces himself as high school detective Heiji Hattori and presents a gift, a bottle of [[baijiu]], of which he gives Conan a swig. Just then, Kimie Tusjimura, the wife of a known diplomat, enters [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]]'s office to ask him to investigate the girlfriend of her son. In order to be inconspicuous, Kogoro takes Ran and Conan along, and Heiji, hoping to flush out Shinichi, tags along as well. What is originally meant to be a simple investigation job turns out to be a murder case, as they find Kimie's husband slain at his desk.<ref>Manga Chapters 092: </ref>

After this first case, it only takes one more run-in with Conan to get Heiji thinking about the similarities between Conan and Shinichi. It is on the "[[Holmes Freak Murder Case]]" that Heiji, despite professing a preference for [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellery_Queen Ellery Queen], exercises the Holmesian axiom: "When you've eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." In addition, after Conan had [[Stun-Gun Wristwatch|knocked him out]] to use him as his mouthpiece to present his evidence, Heiji receives a clout on the head from [[Kogoro Mouri]], which wakes him up again, and from the corner of his eye he spies Conan standing behind him and using his [[Voice-Changing Bowtie]] to mimick his voice; he thus discovers Conan's secret, which forces Conan to explain his situation.

On their third case together, Conan was initially irritated to see Heiji, but they quickly formed a strong team. Together they cornered the murderer and even took steps to preventing the suicide she had planned. When she realizes that she won't be able to kill herself she weeps piteously, causing Heiji to whisper to Conan, "perhaps we should have let her die." Conan replies that "a detective who corners a murderer with logic and then lets them commit suicide is no better than a murderer."

Although Heiji seemed to laugh this off at the time, soon after he invites Conan (and [[Kogoro Mouri]] and [[Ran Mouri]], because otherwise it'd look suspicious) to Osaka. It is revealed by [[Kazuha Toyama]] (in her first appearance) that Heiji has been talking about 'Kudo' so often that Kazuha thought 'Kudo' was his new Tokyo girlfriend. Heiji suggests that the reason he invited Conan to Osaka is because he has been worried about Conan's safety; he has had dreams of Conan being murdered. On a case together in Osaka, Heiji gives Conan his omamori, which ends up saving his life by deflecting a knife thrust. However, without it Heiji is injured while trying to prevent the murderer from committing suicide. In the ambulance, he reveals to Conan that he has taken to heart Conan's admonishment.

Heiji's relationship with [[Kazuha Toyama|Kazuha]] is a very close one; they were childhood friends, and have stayed close through the years. Their relationship is identified as a romantic one by other characters and fans alike, even though they claim that they don't have that sort of relationship or feelings for each other. Heiji is clueless when it comes to love and has not yet realized he has actual feelings for Kazuha. However, it has been shown that he becomes visibly jealous when he sees Kazuha with other guys, becoming distracted throughout the whole case. At one point, after a certain case, while looking at Kazuha, his thoughts read: 'Fool. You're too naive. I promise you, as long as you're with me, I'll never let anyone hurt you.'. Kazuha knows she has feelings for Heiji, as she shows this by being protective and chasing off other women that might have a interest in him In on of the mangas Kazuha attempts to confess her feelings after finding out that Ran had done so with Shinichi, but is unlucky because by telling him, Heiji ran off to tease Shinichi for it . Also, they have the same situation as Ran and Shinichi, being childhood friends that have romantic feelings for each other and have the same background as them. Heiji is a teenage detective and she is a police's daughter, like Ran is a police's daughter and Shinichi is a teenage detective. They are even called the 'Ran and Shinichi of Osaka' by fans of the series, since they're so similar. Although they are constantly fighting, they both are very close friends. It is also shown in the seventh movie, ''[[Crossroad in the Ancient Capital]]'', that Kazuha is Heiji's first love, though he didn't know it was her at the time.

Heiji acts rather brotherly towards [[Shinichi Kudo|Shinichi]], even going so far as to pretend to be him on various occasions, so no one figures out that Shinichi and Conan are the same person. Heiji can be a little bit worried for Shinichi when he gets into trouble and in a life or death situation. They are as close as real brothers, both being detectives who have feelings for their childhood friends. When they're caught solving a case together, it's not unusual for their minds to move in sync; because of this and several other factors, they maintain a sort of friendly rivalry with each other.
