Story summary
The story follows the adventures of Shinichi Kudo (also known as Jimmy Kudo in Case Closed), a young detective prodigy who was inadvertently shrunk into a child's body due to a poison he was force-fed by members of a criminal syndicate. Neighbor and family friend Professor Agasa strongly suggested Shinichi hide his identity to prevent them from killing him and the people he cares about, so Shinichi takes the name Conan Edogawa. He goes to live with his childhood friend Ran Mouri and her father, Kogoro, and tries to use Kogoro's detective agency as a way to find the people who shrank him—without letting Ran figure out who he really is.
Internal rules
The world of Detective Conan has a set of internal rules that might catch unfamiliar readers of the manga and spectators of the anime off guard, such as the lack of information sharing and the regular illogical and irrational behavior exhibited by many characters. The universe is mostly consistent within its rules, with a few exceptions. The passing of time is difficult to judge, due to a literary device known as a floating timeline, which enables the compression of 20+ years worth of events and technological upgrades into less than one year.
* English Sub
On October 2014 at NY Comic Con's Crunchyroll panel, they announced that "Case Closed" would be added to their roster. Later they began subtitling the Japanese episodes at episode 754. The page for the series uses the Case Closed banner from Funimation. Originally the episodes were posted on Saturdays, a week after they air in Japan, but later they were posted on Wednesdays. Since May 2017, new episodes will be posted several hours after they air in Japan on Saturdays for premium users, while they will be available for free users a week after. Since September 2022, Crunchyroll has removed the option to watch all anime free with ads, leaving only premium option and 14-day free trial for new user. As of March 9, 2024, they have subtitled up to episode 1116, excluding specials and movies. Crunchyroll later reclaimed the original license of the series from Funimation, and since August 2021, began to stream the first 123 episodes, all completely remastered.

As of January 2016, English language Netflix began to stream episodes under the title "Case Closed". The page for the series uses the Case Closed banner from Funimation. They obtained the rights to air fifty-two episodes in Japanese with subtitles, from episode 748-799. The show's maturity rating is listed as TV-14. However, it has been removed for unknown reason.

As of 2022, the streaming service Crackle has rights to episodes 1-82, and all episodes are available with English sub. Episodes 1-28 were added July 7, with 29-82 added on August 18

* New English Dub
Since 2019, Bang Zoom! Entertainment restarted the English dub for movies, featuring all-new casts. Unlike Funimation dub, the character names are not changed. Discotek Media release the movies in Blu-ray since 2020. As of July 26, 2022, they have released 6 movies (Movie 19-24) and 1 special (Episode One: The Great Detective Turned Small).

As February 2023, Netflix has worldwide rights to spin-off series Zero's Tea Time and The Culprit Hanzawa. Both series also come out with English dub from Bang Zoom! Entertainment.

As March 2023, Fox Corporation-owned streaming service Tubi began to stream episodes under the title "Case Closed". They have rights to episodes 965-1014, and all episodes are available with English dub. The dub is done by Macias Group, featuring Bang Zoom's casts for some characters, and all-new casts for the other characters.

Games
As of 2013, only one Case Closed branded video game was released, which was Case Closed: The Mirapolis Investigation, which was a Nintendo Wii exclusive title and released only in Japan and Europe. It features the English voice cast from the Anime for the English version, and has minor changes in script.

Critical reception
The series has been well received in Japan, with the anime adaptation ranking in the top twenty in Animage's polls between 1996 until 2000, where it dropped below the top twenty. In the Japanese TV anime ranking, Detective Conan often ranked the top six. It has even been used as a mascot to promote citizens to follow the law. The English adaptation has not been as equally popular as in Japan, and has been criticized for the character name changes.

The manga is a huge success and it is continued to be published. It won the prestigious Shogakukan Manga Award for the shōnen category in 2000. Some of its volumes appear on the lists of best-selling manga.

The series is successful in Asia and Europe, where some countries translated most of the episodes and volumes. Due to the high popularity DC is re-broadcasting in many countries after the original premieres.

Although popular in many other countries, Case Closed was not as successful in the US, most likely due to poor advertising, name changes, and script changes around Japanese people and culture.

Due to this, FUNimation's dubbed version of "Case Closed" was cancelled at only 130 episodes.

Although, many fans wanted the anime version of Detective Conan to be successful in North America, excluding the renamed character names, it did not do well and still failed and got several negative reviews, and therefore in 2018, FUNimation Entertainment lost the rights to "Case Closed", along with "KenIchi: The Mightiest Disciple".

However, the manga is still released by VIZ Media.

Demographic
Even though Detective Conan is a Shōnen, its audience is composed of a substantial proportion of female viewers and readers. The series also seems to attract all ages.

Appearances in other media
Besides his anime and manga appearances, Conan is the protagonist for all the movies and the video games based on the Case Closed series. Aoko Nakamori is a character in the manga and anime franchise Magic Kaito, as well as the manga and anime franchise Detective Conan. She is the childhood friend and the romantic interest of Kaito Kuroba.

Background
Aoko has been Kaito's best friend ever since they were young children, much like Ran and Shinichi in Detective Conan. Aoko currently attends Ekoda High School as a second-year student in class 2-B along with Kaito, Keiko, Akako, and Saguru. Aoko dislikes the Kaitou Kid for making a mockery of her father, Ginzo Nakamori, but is probably unaware that Kid is actually her best friend in disguise. (This information may not be true; however, many fans speculate this as Aoko is quite clever and she used to drop a sentence which is believed to doubt Kaito's true feelings, implying her concerns that he (Kaito) was always nice and gentle but something was off in him.)

Personality
Aoko has a temperamental personality, sweet and gentle at one moment, then boisterous and fiery at the next. Like her father, she is impulsive, easily riled up, and often shouts. Kaito and Kaitou Kid in particular are often the trigger for bouts of loud, violent displays. She also has a mischievous side, using Kaito's weakness for fish to get revenge on him for harassing her.

Aoko has a tendency to refer to herself in the third person, which is considered 'cutesy' and childish in Japan. She is also shown to dress rather childishly, in skirts and cardigans when she's not in her school uniform.

Aoko is shown to be very intelligent. However, she may also have a rather low self-esteem. Once, to prove to her father that Kaito wasn't the Kid, she asked him out on a date on the day of a Kid heist. Kaito, taken aback, snaps "Why would I go out with an ugly girl like you?" to which she tearfully replies "I know...but please!"

Aoko does not like being alone; she blames Kaitou Kid for stealing her father from her because she wishes her dad was at home more instead of chasing Kaitou Kid.
Relationships analysis
Kaito Kuroba
Kaito Kuroba and Aoko Nakamori
Kaito and Aoko Nakamori have been best friends since they were little and first met at the clock tower. They are portrayed as a similar pairing to Shinichi Kudo and Ran Mouri (including how the characters are drawn), except much sillier. Kaito often teases Aoko by flipping her skirt. However, it has been seen that Kaito is quite protective of Aoko and doesn't appear to want her to go on a date with Saguru Hakuba. Aoko was somewhat suspicious that Kaito was actually Kaitou Kid, and in order to prove his innocence, she brought him along to a movie when a heist had been scheduled. She handcuffed him to the seat, but Kaito managed to escape and pull off the heist, thus veering Aoko's suspicions away from him. Although neither has admitted it as of yet, it is shown that the two have feelings for each other.

In the last chapter of Yaiba a scene set after a three years time skip has Keiko Momoi telling Sayaka Mine that Kaito and Aoko are a couple now, while Keiko's friend confirms having seen them together.

Saguru Hakuba
Prior to the heist in Volume 3, Chapter 3, Hakuba seems to flirt with Aoko after Kaito turns down Aoko's offer to go to the Prince Prince concert. Saguru and Kaito then make a bet that if Saguru manages to catch Kid then Saguru will go to the concert with Aoko, and if he fails to capture the thief, Kaito will go instead. When interviewed before the heist, Saguru notes "Tonight's battle has a special meaning to me". Although initially excited to have Saguru want to go to the concert with her, Aoko during the actual heist seems to want Saguru to fail so that she can go to the concert with Kaito instead. This relationship has not been touched upon much since then because of Saguru's limited appearances in Magic Kaito and Detective Conan.

Plot overview
Aoko has been friends with Kaito Kuroba since they were both small children. However, they frequently bicker and fight; she seems to be the target of many of Kaito's pranks, to which she retaliates by attempting to bludgeon him with whatever she can get her hands on (often a mop).

Aoko hates the Kaitou Kid for humiliating her father, Ginzo Nakamori. This is partly why Kaito has to go to such lengths to keep his identity hidden from her. However, Kaito has come under suspicion of being the Kaitou Kid several times. In one instance, Aoko went to great lengths to prove Kaito innocent: she asked him out on the day the heist was supposed to take place, and then during the actual time of the heist she handcuffed Kaito to her. Kaito, however, was able to escape and use a dummy to fool Aoko into thinking that he had been with her the entire time.

Aoko frequently attends Kaitou Kid heists, similar to how Ran Mouri attends many of her father's mystery cases. Kaito has not had to prove his 'innocence' to her recently, which suggests that she now 'trusts' him.

Name origin
* Aoko's name is derived from the 'blue' of blue sapphire which is also her birthstone.
* The given name "Aoko" means "blue child" in Japanese. This contrasts with her classmate Akako Koizumi's name, which means "red child".
* The surname "Nakamori" comes from Akina Nakamori.
Trivia
* Aoko always talks in third person when referring to herself, which is seen as cute, but rather childish in Japan.
* A prototype version of Aoko appears in Gosho's Nonchalant Lupin short story. In this version, Aoko is named Aoko Holmes and is a high school detective who started her own Detective Club.
* Her name was taken from Akina Nakamori (中森 明菜), an extremely popular pop idol at the time Gosho Aoyama started drawing Magic Kaito, who also went to school in Nakano Ward, where Gosho Aoyama was also living close to, using some of those surroundings as models for his series. Perhaps her rebellious and feisty image - unusual for an idol - was also an inspiration for Aoko's personality. Akina's rival Kyoko Koizumi's name was used for Akako Koizumi instead.
* Aoko shares a voice actor with Conan for her appearance in Detective Conan OVA 4 and episode 219.
* Unlike her counterparts Ran and Kazuha, it has been suggested that Aoko has a high level of intelligence at least approaching that of her 'love-interest' Kaito. In the first file of the Magic Kaito manga, the two are causing havoc in the classroom; the teacher tries to get them to focus by asking first Kaito, then Aoko to answer a complicated math problem on the board, but both answer her question with hardly a glance at the board and continue with their mayhem.
* Since Aoko's name was derived from 'blue' of blue sapphire, Gosho Aoyama originally planned to have an allusion to her in connection with the blue sapphire in The Fist of Blue Sapphire. But he refrained, thinking people wouldn't notice it.<ref>Lets Talk with Gosho Aoyama Day#2020<br>
Q: In the director's interview of the 2019 movie (Fist of Blue Sapphire), he talked about how you said after the movie was finished "It was the blue sapphire so maybe I should've put hints of Aoko there"; if you had done that, how would've it been like?<br>
Aoyama: Ah... See, in the end, he'd return the blue sapphire to him. And when he did he did so, saying he didn't need it, he'd said "I've got a better sapphire"...<br>
(Applause from the audience)<br>
Aoyama: Huh? You wanted me to actually do that? (laughs)<br>
Questioner: Yes!<br>
Aoyama: Really!? (laughs) That for real? Well, I thought you wouldn't catch (the reference) so that's why I didn't (laughs) What. So you'd actually welcomed it? Well, imagine it within your minds (laughs)<br>
