Over the course of the series, 22 characters have come to know that [[Conan Edogawa]] is actually [[Shinichi Kudo]] (11 of which are not manga [[canon]]). In addition, [[Ran Mouri]] has noticed similarities between the two and [[Kogoro Mouri]], [[Wataru Takagi]] and [[Rei Furuya]] have shown signs of doubting that Conan is just ''"very smart"''. This should not be confused with the [[people who know Conan is really Sleeping Kogoro|people who know Conan is the puppeteer behind Sleeping Kogoro]].

In their respective categories, characters are listed by the order they came to discover (or become suspicious of) Conan's identity.

So far eleven people have learned Conan's true identity is Shinichi in the manga [[canon]]. Four were told the truth, six discovered it for themselves. How the remaining one became aware of this is unconfirmed.

[[Kaitou Kid]] (also known as ''Phantom Thief Kid'') becomes aware of Conan's true identity in [[The Last Wizard of the Century]]. While disguised as [[Ninzaburo Shiratori]], Kid had bugged the phones on the Suzuki Financial Group's ship and therefore heard all of the conversation between Conan and Agasa on the phone. Not realizing they were being listened to, Agasa continued to refer to Conan as "Shinichi" on the phone as he normally does. It is assumed that afterwards Kid put two and two together. Kid's knowledge of Conan being Shinichi is confirmed in [[The Lost Ship in the Sky]]. Kid's knowledge of Conan's identity has not been stated in the manga and has not been confirmed by [[Gosho Aoyama]] to be canon, although in the manga Kid is definitely aware that Conan is no mere child.

His wife was hospitalized due to a serious sickness, but he's earnings were too modest to afford her treatments, so he was forced to borrow money from Kuromaru Finance. Tsutomu Oshiro, a 38 years old employee, whenever he came by to check on the investment, callously bullied Nagai, which the old man endured for his wife's sake. But then Oshiro decided to demand repayment from the wife, heedless of her condition. When she heard that her husband had plunged himself into debt, she suffered a breakdown which contributed to her death soon afterwards. Then, Nagai murders Oshiro for revenge.

Upon that revelation, Nagai remembers Conan - or rather, Shinichi - from an incident ten years ago, when one of a group of children visiting his toy shop had dropped a toy engine to the floor, breaking it. Shinichi found out which child had done it, but Nagai kindly refused to punish the offender for this accident. The startlement from this realization convinces Nagai to turn himself over to the police, and Inspector Megure orders a thorough investigation of Kuromaru's dubious business practices. When Megure asks Nagai why he has decided to surrender himself, Nagai replies that a "mysterious boy who has [[APTX-4869|remained unchanged]] for ten years" has influenced him into doing so, as a sort of messenger from his late wife.

== Suspicious ==
Although several characters have caught on to the fact that Conan is much smarter than most children, only a few characters have questioned exactly why he is so smart. Although the [[FBI]] are aware of Conan's intelligence and even talk to him like he is an adult ([[Shuichi Akai]]), they do not seem to be too concerned about how he got so smart, especially since they have not encountered Conan's true self, [[Shinichi Kudo]]. Some of the police like [[Miwako Sato]] and [[Ninzaburo Shiratori]] take Conan's deductions seriously, but like the FBI, they seem to believe he is just an exceptionally bright child.

[[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] was the first character to become suspicious of Conan's identity, albeit briefly. In [[Volume 2]], he felt like he had seen Conan from somewhere before, likely the time when Ran was in elementary school.<ref>[[Volume 2|File 10, Page 16]]</ref> Later, he noticed that Conan was once again pointing out things he overlooked, such as that all of the photos proving the suspects alibi had clocks in them. However, he instantly loses his suspicions when Conan spills another envelope of photos for the case, deciding that "a brat is a brat" after all.<ref>Manga Chapter 11: A Perfect Alibi</ref>

In the [[TV Station Murder Case]], Kogoro became suspicious about Conan for the second time. He was invited to attend a television live show as a guest star. However, a murder occurred at the studio. After finding out all the evidences, Conan lured Kogoro to a separate room, lying that [[Yoko Okino]] was in there. Just as usual, he decided to tranquilize Kogoro and used the man to solve the case. Unfortunately, when Kogoro woke up, he began to question Conan about Yoko's whereabouts. He was also suspicious about the fact that whenever Conan tried to pull him outside, he always fell asleep right after. Kogoro angrily grabbed the boy's suit jacket and wanted to "clear things up". Much to Conan's luck, Yoko Okino appeared for real and Kogoro completely lost his suspicions.

==== Ran Mouri ====

[[Ran Mouri|Ran]] has on more than one occasion noticed the striking similarities between Shinichi and Conan, being his childhood friend and one of the people that know Shinichi the best.<ref>Episode 96.</ref> She first becomes suspicious during the Episode 7: [[Once-A-Month Present Threat Case]] when Conan deduces that the client is a surgeon in a manner similar to Shinichi's deductions, but her suspicions are diluted due to Conan playing with the toys. Later, her suspicions are raised due to Conan acting suspiciously mature for a child and then tricked him into saying indirectly that he's Shinichi. At the end of the episode her suspisions are cleared due to Conan being in the agency while Shinichi( Agasa using a voice changer to mimic)calls the agency.<ref>Episode 7: [[Once-A-Month Present Threat Case]]</ref> In [[Caught Up With the Great Detective! Two Murder Cases!|Episode 96]], she sees Conan without his glasses and notices he looks exactly the same as Shinichi when he was a child. She even tries to confront him about it, but [[Yukiko Kudo|Yukiko]] then arrives and claims that Conan is her distant nephew.<ref>Episode 96: [[Caught Up With the Great Detective! Two Murder Cases!]]</ref> Later on, in [[The Desperate Revival]], it is revealed that Ran believes Conan is Shinichi and is waiting for him to tell her.<ref>Episodes 188-193: [[The Desperate Revival]]</ref> She is only dissuaded from this when Shinichi appears at the same time that Conan does. It turns out that Haibara has given Conan a temporary [[Antidote (Prototype)|antidote]] that will return him to Kudo Shinichi and disguised herself as Conan. After a text message she sends to Shinichi is received on Conan's cell phone her suspicions are aroused again<ref>Manga Chapter 479: The Suspicious Message</ref>, but Conan uses Agasa's cell phone to call her as Shinichi and messages her his "new" cell phone number.<ref>Episode 400: [[Ran's Suspicions]] Manga Chapter 483: Unlocking It!</ref> Since then, Ran has apparently been too happy with having Shinichi's "secret number" to become suspicious of Conan.<ref> Manga Chapter 484: From Him to Her</ref>
An upcoming suspicion arc has been foreshadowed with Heiji Hattori's omamori and her wondering how Shinichi's fingerprints got on it when only Conan has touched it, coupled with Conan's recent lack of subtlety.
And in the [[Volume 66#Kazuha's Charm Case|Kazuha's Charm Case]], Ran told Conan if he has the resolution of the case yet, hinting that she continue suspecting about Shinichi being Conan.

When it seemed they would both die while disarming a bomb, [[Wataru Takagi|Detective Takagi]] agreed to follow Conan's instructions in exchange for telling him who he really is. Conan agreed but said he would tell him in the afterlife.<ref>Manga Chapter 372: The Most in This World...</ref> Takagi had also thought to himself that Conan was not just any normal kid prior to this, but he has not made this observation since nor has he asked Conan to explain his answer. It is worth noting however that Takagi is aware of Conan's [[Stun-Gun Wristwatch]] and will do nearly anything Conan asks him to do, including dressing up as a mailman in order to fool some kidnappers. Also, in a recent case Takagi refers to Kudo as "Shinichi-kun", something that is strange considering that the last contact Shinichi and Takagi had (Shiragami case) he still called him "Kudo-kun", and also in the [[Volume 63#Highway Murder Case|Shiragami Case]] he had the same attitude with Shinichi than with Conan in other cases, possibly because he continues suspecting about his identity. However, in the [[Super_Digest_Books#SDB80.2B_questions_translations|Q&A of the Super Digest Book 80+]], Gosho Aoyama stated that Takagi doesn't suspect Conan "even the tiniest bit".

He became amazed by Conan's intelligence by discovering the fake sommelier that tried to poison Princess Mira and how he managed to alert the cockpit of his presence when he jumped onto the plane upon take off. Upon witnessing his actions, Keith reveals his suspicions that although Conan may look like a child, he has the mind of an adult and entrusts him along with Jigen to find evidence that proves Duke Gerard murdered Queen Sakura and Prince Gill.

==Background==
Mary Sera is a British woman who married to the [[Akai family's father]]. She bore three children, [[Shuichi]], [[Shukichi]], and [[Masumi]]. For some unknown reason, something like APTX caused her body to shrink from that of a middle-aged woman to that of a middle-school child. The change occurred sometime during the last ten years.

Mary's full background is currently unknown. Her existence was revealed by Masumi to [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] through an image on her cell phone and the name "The little sister from outside the domain" (ryōiki-gai no imōto). Mary and Masumi currently live in a hotel, and when their position becomes known, they move to a new one. In a recent appearance they seemed to be investigating the death of [[Kohji Haneda]] to find out what a tv personality knew about [[Asaka]]. Mary has also implied that Conan is no longer the same person that she and Masumi met 10 years ago, lending credit to both the idea that she is a shrunken individual and that they are aware that Conan is [[Shinichi Kudo|Shinichi]]

==Personality==
Mary seems very mature and direct, especially when speaking to Masumi. She seems hesitant to trust others at the moment and is being extremely cautious about who knows about her. Currently because of her cautiousness, she and Masumi have been moving from one hotel to another to keep their location hidden.

She is proud of her British heritage.

Like her eldest son she also seems to be clumsy at recognizing the motives behind the feelings of others and how to interact positively with others. In dealing with her children, Mary seems to be strict and cold, treating her children more like coworkers than a family. Shukichi seemed to be more nurturing to Masumi than her mom. When Mary was 10 years younger, she came to physical blows with her eldest son, Shuichi, since he lied to her about his reasons to study in the USA and planned to join the FBI and investigate her husbands' incident. They both went as far as attacking each other's faces, leaving black eyes. She also thought Shuichi, who is a rather cold person as well, would make a good replacement father figure for Masumi and Shukichi. However, soon after she realized that Shuichi was driven by the same sense of curiosity as his father and he would go his own way. Her continued mistrust of Conan is another example of her general denseness at understanding others, since it is long past the point where she should be able to tell that Conan's motives and pursuit of justice are genuine.

But she does express joy at Shukichi's victory for becoming the seven-crowned Shogi master. It indicates that she does care for her children.

== Appearance ==

Mary is a girl of middle school age (12-15) with light colored, curly, neck length hair. The child has eyes similar to those of [[Masumi Sera]] and [[Shuichi Akai]]. In her appearance in File 877, she was shown wearing a high-neck pleated top, hoodie jacket, and hat. Like all the other manga characters, the color of her eyes is supposed to be blue, as seen in the keyhole of manga volume 83.

In her varying appearances, Mary's eyes have been drawn slightly differently. In her original and current chapter appearances she seems to have an extra lash on the top of her eye, where as in the Pool case and [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]]'s comparison of her and [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]]'s eyes in the Department store case she does not have that extra lash.

==Skills==
Mary seems to know about several types of wire taps. When she and Masumi find Conan's wire tap in their room, she says that she hasn't seen that type before. She also describes the components of it such as its battery life and performance. She spoke in a similar fashion about Conan's voice changer after she gets a chance to use it herself.

She has demonstrated the ability to hang from a balcony by a thin rope/wire and hug the wall like a ninja. Afterword she has the strength to vault back up on to the balcony, much like [[Vermouth]] did in the New York case.

10 years ago she already had the ability to fight well enough that she landed a "knife-hand strike" to her son Shuichi's face, who at the time had already been practicing Jeet Kune Do. In the present, even with her small body, she was able to take down a fully grown man by herself. Conan described the damage as "a copped blow to a vital spot, similar to the techniques used by the secret service".

Masumi asks Conan to find her cellphone by calling it with his. When he does he notices the call background screen is a child with eye bags similar to those of [[Shuichi Akai]] and [[Masumi Sera]]. He remarks that the girl looks similar to Masumi. Earlier in the case she only mentioned having two brothers; a mother; and a father, so Conan suspects Masumi was intentionally trying to show him the child for some reason.

When Ran, Sonoko, and Conan visit Masumi's apartment, Mary is shown opening Masumi's door as Conan, Masumi, Sonoko, and Ran rush to investigate a crime. It is implied she was hiding in Masumi's bedroom while the other three were in the dining area because Masumi asks Conan not to enter her bedroom. Mary later goes downstairs to the scene of the crime where she is seen by Conan. At some point off screen Conan leaves behind a bug in Masumi's room. After the case is solved, Mary is shown examining Conan's bug along with Masumi. Mary comments on the quality of the performance of the bug itself and that she has never seen one like it. She says that it is still early to trust Conan, and asks Masumi to introduce her as "{{nihongo|the little sister from ''outside the domain''|領域外の妹|ryōiki-gai no imōto}}", should Conan question her in the future.

Mary is interested in [[Shukichi Haneda|Shukichi]]'s shogi match. When Masumi returns to the hotel room in the middle of the case while Mary is napping, she turns on the TV and sees the shogi match. Later after the case is solved, Masumi enters the room for a second time to see Mary turning off the TV. Presumably she saw the end of the match and was happy at Shukichi's victory, as was Subaru Okiya, whose identity was revealed in the case before this one, to be Shuichi.

She expresses her still-lingering concern of trusting Conan, even though she thinks he is bright enough. Mary does comment that if anything were to go wrong they would have to move hotels again. Her talk with him alone is put on hold, however, because [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] and [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]] have invited themselves in accompanying Conan in order to enjoy the hotel's pool. As Conan, Ran, and Sonoko head back home after the case is solved, Ran turns around and sees Masumi talking to her. Ran gets the feeling that she has seen that child before.

[[Masumi Sera]] is at Ramen Ogura with Conan, Sonoko and Ran. [[Katsumasa Ogura]] asks Masumi (mistakenly calling her "Mari") if she's going to take the same food to her apartment again. Conan implies that Masumi could be giving food to someone she's letting stay in her apartment, making a clear reference to Mary, but she jokes saying that it's for her secret boyfriend. At the end of the case it is revealed that Ogura had found a handkerchief that Masumi had left behind that said "Mary" on it in English. Ogura had confused the English name with the Japanese name "Mari". Conan believes that the handkerchief may be related to the child as well.

Conan thinks about Mary, "the little sister from outside the domain looks a lot like Sera, no wait, more than that girl resembling Sera..." (領域外の妹と名乗る… 世良によく似た… いや…　あの子世良というより…‥ ). Conan also thinks to himself that the child's name is probably Mary. At the end of the case Haibara tried to wipe some of the makeup off of her face in the bathroom, but she missed some just below her left eye. The left over makeup made it look like she had the same eye bags as Shuichi, Masumi, and Mary. This causes Conan to make a connection between her and Mary.

[[kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] is put in contact with a Soul Detective who wishes to reveal some information about the [[Kohji Haneda]] case. When Conan and Kogoro go to meet with him at a hotel they find him dead and that [[Masumi Sera|Masumi]] and Mary have mysteriously moved in to the next hotel room. During the investigation Conan runs into Masumi's hotel room and checks the balcony. Mary has hidden herself by anchoring herself to the balcony and hiding by hugging the wall underneath it. Conan nearly discovers that she is hiding there by trying to take a picture over the edge, which startles her. Conan then drops his voice-changer on his way back inside. Mary picks it up, and later uses it in place of Conan to solve the case. When the culprit tried to flee, Mary was able to take him down single handed using skills comparable to that of the secret service. Masumi calls her "Mama". Once Conan had left, Mary and Masumi discuss what information the Soul Detective had, which was that before Kohji's death, Asaka was seen holding a hand mirror and thinks that it means that Asaka is a woman. Mary warns Masumi about Conan saying that "it is like encountering a demon in the darkness" (暗がりに鬼を繋ぐが如く), and that he is not the same boy they met 10 years ago. Conan goes home and theorizes that Mary could have been Asaka. Later Gin uses the same demon line that Mary used to refer to Kogoro.

10 years ago at a beach somewhere in Japan, Shuichi reunited with his family after his 7 years in the US. Mary had an off-screen fight with him where they both managed to injure each other's eye. Through out the case Mary warns him to stop investigating the disappearance of [[Akai family's father|his father]]. She also tells both Shuichi and Masumi not to do things that got them involved in the case, because there are people out there that are after them.

==Identity==
At the time Mary was introduced, her relationship to Masumi Sera was unknown. Masumi testifies that she has two older brothers: [[Shuichi Akai]] and an unknown brother (later revealed to be [[Shukichi Haneda]]) living in Japan.<ref>Manga [[Volume 82]], File 11 (872), pg 3: Red Woman. ==== Mary is an adult shrunken by APTX 4869 ====
Mary acts like an adult despite apparent middle-school age. When Masumi and Mary speak, the speech honorifics are not those appropriate for an elder Masumi talking to a younger girl. Instead, they appear to indicate the two are on equal levels, or even reverse with Mary expressing greater seniority. In addition, Mary's Voice actor in the anime, [[Atsuko Tanaka]], has a deep and sultry voice which is often used to portray mature female characters

The secrecy surrounding Mary, as well as Masumi's attempts to get her to trust Conan, whom Masumi knows is a shrunken Shinichi, might be indications that Masumi is trying to get the child help about an [[APTX 4869]] problem. Mary appears to be sickly and is often seen coughing. This could be a side effect of an earlier version of ATPX she may have ingested.

==== Akai family mother ====
Continuing from the previous speculation, Mary could be the mother of the Akai /Sera family. There are currently five known members of the family: a deceased [[Akai family's father|Father]], a Mother, [[Shuichi Akai]], a middle [[Akai family's middle brother|Son]], and [[Masumi Sera]]. Mary's eyes and features are similar to those of Masumi Sera and Shuichi Akai as noted by Conan, and so she presumably looks like the mother of the family. Masumi seems to recognize Conan Edogawa to be Shinichi Kudo despite him having such a young appearance, and if she does indeed recognize him she is not surprised by his appearance, which could imply that she is aware of shrinking and the drugs which cause it; and perhaps even looking into it because her mother was affected by such.

In chapter 953 of the manga, Masumi calls Mary, "Mama". In chapter 972 it is revealed that Masumi's mother is called Mary.

Gosho has given evasive answers when asked about Elena and the Akai family mother being related, which is his habit when a fan theory is correct but he can't admit to it.<ref>When answering fan questions, Gosho often bluntly says "no" if a guess is wrong. If it is correct and would spoil a mystery, Gosho's habit is to be vague and avoid giving a firm answer rather than lying or giving in and revealing the truth. After narrowing down the choices, fans started trying to trap Gosho.

==== Middle brother ====
Along the same lines as the mother theory, another option for the child's identity is the [[Akai family's middle brother|middle brother of the Akai family]] shrunken by some drug such as APTX 4869. Mary's appearance as a girl may be misleading similar to how Masumi is mistaken for a man, something the child is taking advantage of in order to conceal his true identity. Although the eyes are similar to Masumi's and Shuichi's, the light colored curly hair sets the child apart from the other two in appearance. Contradicting this, Conan believes the child looks very similar to Masumi<ref>Episode 759</ref> which suggests the child does not look like the Akai father and by extension the middle brother.
