[SPOILER DISCUSSION] File 958-962: The Nue of Yadori Village

Recommended Posts

Has been a while for me here! Wow so this case seems cool :D Is it just me or does it remind anyone else of the Hound of the Baskervilles parody case? :P That one also had Heiji after all.

Not sure what the "nue" could mean but regarding the creature I think it could very very well be someone in a costume, though if so then the person must be really athletic to be so fast even in such a heavy costume. Btw can anyone please tell me which file is the latest one translated into English as of now? Thanks!

Edit:

So I just read 958, and the piece of paper clearly seems to have been hold upside down judging by the side that had been ripped. So as someone before me pointed out it closely resembles "anu". I don't think btw that the ink leaked to the other side and that's the side they were reading. My prediction right now is that it's not English but something in Japanese, however written incorrectly. I mean he had a notebook in which he practiced writing "a" in hiragana, which is the very first thing you learn in hiragana, so he probably didn't know how to write all the other hiragana correctly. In which case again you might argue that he could have simply written Romaji so I really have no clue what he actually meant to write.

The reporter seems to be too convinced that the Nue exists. Almost as though he was there when the foreigner died. Then, there's the thing bout the dog wagging his tail when he saw the reporter, suggesting familiarity. Putting the two together, maybe the reporter went to look for the treasure along with the foreigner, but fled the scene later for some reason. That's my take, at least. Also, the death seems to have occurred due to a wild animal like a bear. Maybe, we are looking at something like the case with the fiery dog, which also had Heiji. Though I doubt Gosho would use plots that similar.

The reporter is 22, and the incident happened 15 years ago. That would make him seven at the time. If he is connected with the foreigner, then maybe he is a son of the foreigner with a japanese mother. Perhaps the notebook that belonged to Charlie Abel was used by the reporter when he was a kid and was practicing hiragara (remember Conan said that he was practicing hiragara as a kid the same way as in the notebook). That could explain that the dog seems to know him.

the note book doesn't belong to a  "charlie abel" it belongs to the miner

The name on the book is " しゃるる - えいべる " which is " Sharuru Eiberu " which is propperly written in katakana as " シャルル - エイベル "

which is the name of the miner. I have no idea where people got the name Charles Abel from.

シャルル is the Nipponization of Charles, and エイベル is Abel

I think someone already said this in DCTP, but the fact the miner could write hiragana supports the "tetsuno" theory.

I posted this at DCTP, but my theory is that the miner, Charles Abel, is left handed. In the cave-in, his left hand was buried, forcing him to write right handed. It's easier to write backwards with your offhand, and sometimes you even do it without paying attention. Thus the miner wrote his hiragana backwards, and sideways perhaps because he tilted his head. If he wrote in English, the tear lines indicate he wrote the message upsidedown relative to his position, which is too hard to do and plain not necessary.

Further supporting the lefthanded theory is the leftward tilt of the central column of the hiragana As in the notebook. Forensic handwriting studies show that lefthanders tend to tilt their vertical letter strokes backwards relative to righthanders, and this tendency is carried over when writing scripts from other languages you aren't as familiar with. The clincher would be to see which direction he starts from when draws his horizontal lines such as when crossing a t or hiragana A.

About the nue, I'm of the opinion there is some sort of optical illusion going on. I'm not sure what exactly, but it might have something to do with the slope of the land, building, and tilt of the trees, and perhaps modifications by the culprit, like some sort of "mystery spot" or outdoor ames room equivalent. The nue is probably the golden retriever dressed up and a tiny sign was prepared for it to pick up and carry away. The original sign was given a set of teeth marks and left for people to find. The other idea might have to do with the black smoke that always appears. the Nue could be some sort of projection or illusion caused by that, but I'm not sure of the mechanics.

Suffice to say, the nue is a gimmick and the attention should be focused on why the culprit needed to create a nue first instead of pushing the vic down the stairs or something.

Why in the world would they use that and not  チャルズ ?

They literally have the "cha" sound so why would they use the "sha"?

They do use チャールズ too. English-Japanese anything is linguistics voodoo. It sounds counter-intuitive, but it seems more Japanese hear the sound as "sha" rather than "cha" for whatever reason when the name is spoken. It happened to Char Aznable (シャア・アズナブル).

Isn't it because "cha" sounds like "tcha" in Japanese ? For example, "Shinichi" will actually sound like "Shinitchi". And since Charles in French isn't pronounced with the 'tcha" sound but with the "cha" sound (unlike in English), it makes more sense to use the "sha" hiragana to convey that specific pronounciation.

People may have misinterpreted the message left by Charlie and assumed that it's referring to the monster. The story was passed from one person to another, and nobody tried to reread the message. And now someone's probably trying to make a monster-related incident based off 'nue'.

hmmm, makes me wonder if this can also be a further hint on the RUM meaning. If Gosho-sama meant for this hint to prove that misinterpretation of the characters can occur and we should not believe everything the characters think no matter how smart they are..

That was already a thing, actually—it's not new. It's more a rule than anything else, by now.

Yes their usage of sha instead of cha makes little sense, but I suppose they use it because in French cha is pronounced as English sha. Also Sharuru is very counter-intuitive, but it comes by taking Cha-r-le like that, the r and le both convert to ru because they don't have "L" sounds in Japanese, however Charles should be Cha-ru-zu or Sha-ru-zu, so technically I suppose the Sha-ru-ru is incorrect because it means Charle and not Charles, but I'm certain that's not any hint and simply a mistake, as you know they missed something as big as spelling Sherrinford Holmes as Sherring Ford so this surely can't be a hint or anything.

Btw was last week a break? Haven't heard of 960 yet(reminds me of chess 960 :P).

Edit:

It seems there indeed was another break, I didn't expect two breaks to come one after another, I hope there won't be more for the rest of the case  :)

Yeah, but I was implying that maybe by the end of this case something related to the main story might happen regarding it..

The in universe explanation for the name could be that an American unfamiliar with Japanese might inadvertently choose to spell his name the wrong way, not knowing there are two Japanese ways to spell the same name based on French and English. Maybe a Japanese advised him incorrectly. Even if he realizes the mistake later, if he has been using a certain spelling, he might just stick with it.

Out of universe, Gosho might not realize that the two spellings for the same name are determined based on the national language of the foreigner. Japanese who don't deal with western foreigners on a semi-regular basis probably wouldn't know details like this.

Here are the 960 text spoilers, translated by Spimer from DCTP. The Chinese scanned 960 is not yet out.

Translation of text spoilers:

NO BREAK NEXT WEEK

File 960: The nue's scars

Conan & Heiji put off the fires and meet with the others to tell them about what they've found.

Archeologoist: "Hmpf... Thought it was but a bottle... But I wasn't expecting it to be a real monster..."

He says something fishy.

Ran & Kazuha called the police but they won't come immediately because they're in a pretty far location: the historian's corpse had some scars that looked like a monster had done them.

The claw-cuts were to give off the impresion yet, out of the 4 cuts, there's only one which caused the death. Heiji directs the brunt at the Mayor saying he's the only who coul've done it yet he denies it and says he got a letter that asked of him to summon the victim and the other 3 here. There also was a letter telling about the famed notebook, the funds and the cave-in accident.

The Mayor admits that the letter instructed in which rooms everyone would lodge: Ran & Kazuha fear there's some setup to their room and say they want to change it. When the novelist hears that the room used to belong to the miner who died in the cave-in she looks interested but the archaeologist offers to exchange rooms because he doesn't want the girls to have fear.

The writer also says he wants to change to a room in the 3rd floor.

Heiji: "I don't care but don't come outta ya room! If ya do so I'll assume ya are the culprit!"

Heiji & Conan stay at the arson scene to keep an eye on the windows when everyone's gone back.

Mayor: "I'll go check all rooms... Even if that monster shows up again... We'll fend it off together!"

Conan & Heiji would've preffered for the Mayor to stay put but come to these they call for the other 3 and ask them their reasons for coming here.

The archaelogist wanted to achieve a carreer like that of the "Godly hand Fujimura Shinichi".

The novelist is famous for her novels about monsters and, as a gruadate of an art college, and shows interested in choosing shooting locations and handling the decoration in case her works were to be adapted into a TV series.

Althought she's unrelated to the buried treasure the mysterious letter instructed for the Mayor to summon her to turn the whole monster story more exciting.

The victim was a historian specialist in the buried treasure topic yet Conan brings up something he finds ood: why was the writer called as well? He isn't famous to begin with: the Mayor isn't sure either because the letter only said "a fledging report writer".

In the meanwhile the writer is drinking cola from the can and keeping an eye out from the window.

The survivors of the cave-in accident vanished and their names are unknown so Hattori seems to be thinking of something. He himself is a pinch hitter in Kogoro's place (who's been discarded due to financial difficulty) and Shinichi's (whereabouts unknown).

The letter Hattori got also mentioned Ran so he doesn't think it's a coincidence. Conan asks why out of all garden trees one of them is a different species but the Mayor hasn't come too often to this hotel so he doesn't know.

Hattori steps over the cinders of a stick which has a cloth-like item attached to it: the novelist opens her window.

Novelist: "You're being loud! Let me sleep!"

When she complains to the group the writer replies from above that he doesn't care for the noise and backs Conan & co.

Conan and Heiji decide they lack info so they suggest going to meet the writer but the "nue's cry" rings out again.

The flames, which should've been put out, surround them and the archaeologist's scream rings out from the hotel.

Supposedly only the Mayor has the spare key but Conan & Heiji go and bang the archaeologist's door yet he doesn't open it.

The Mayor takes a while to meet up with them and bring the spare key: they enter the room and find the archaeologist dead.

There are 2 red spots below the vic's chin which look like he was bitten by a snake.

A new closed room murder... Could it be that there's really a "nue" out there?

Side-note: "A 2nd murder has finally happened... A "snake" comes next after the "tiger"... What'll happen to these serial murders...!?

Last Heiji case, there were two corpses by the end of the 3rd file... this may be a 5-file case, if we go by that.

Personally, I don't think the young reporter is the murderer. Last two Heiji cases the one who screamed that the mythical creature of the case was real turned out not to be. I think he's connected to Charles Abel, the victim, or may be even connected to the killer (though the former is far more likely, considering, for example, his encounter with Charlie's golden retriever). Thus, if there's another murder, not only will the case end up with 6 or 7 files, the young reporter will not die, and the one left besides him will be the murderer.

As for Heiji and Kazuha, Heiji is not dense, and he's gotten over the fact that the cat is out of the bag, as it were (hence his confession attempt in 931–935), so I'm not too sure that there won't be progress. Heiji not confessing to Kazuha by the end of this would by no means by a twist—if there's gonna be a twist, it'd be something like Heiji actually wanted to get Ran to respond to Shinichi's confession at this unremarkable locale (I severely doubt this will be the case)—if anything, Heiji actually confessing to Kazuha would be the twist.

One weird thing I noticed while checking out 960 is the chubnovelist's windows when she talks. She opens both sides of the windows, forcing her to lean way out to see around the window to talk to Soda&Pop Nue loving reporter. The reporter wisely kept one side of his window shut to speak without leaning out too far. As Jimmy pointed out, this prevents the reporter from seeing what she is doing with her hands. If everyone was fixating on the fire, it's entirely possible she could do something to launch an item upwards to hit the archeologist from below as he looks out.

The novelist keeps her same room while the archeologist goes to Ran and Kazuha's old room. It seems he wanted to be there for a specific purpose as he was rifling through the AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAa practice book and other things. If the novelist is the killer, and she knew that the archeologist was going to move to the girls' room to investigate, she could safely offer to room swap knowing she would be overruled. That sets up a psychological trick Gosho has used before with Kir and Gin: hiding one's ability to control and act by making it appear like something unpredictable happened when the culprit already knows how the vic will act in advance.

The novelist was also the one to suggest searching the drawers in the first place, another point to her manipulator position.

The fire in the ground probably came about as a result of buried bottles of flammable stuff with a timer, fuse, or other delay. The murder weapon might have been a modified taser of the shoots two barbs type. Take the shock out and coat the barbs with poison.

I just came back after a week or so and wow this site looks different, and great! :D

About the case, does anyone know if spoilers for file 961 is out yet? Or maybe 960 scans? Thanks!

Well, looks like the spoiler brackets still work.

My thoughts on 961, also posted on DCTP:

In the picture on Page 12, is the guy to the far right—behind Abel and Tanzawa—irrelevant to the case, or isn't he?

Since Gosho didn't show the person to the far left, it may turn out to be the novelist, if she's the murderer.

If Abel is the writer's father, and the accident is why he was abandoned, then the chances of him being the culprit go down, in my book. When it comes to the abandoned children in DC (the monk from 559–561/479, for instance—from the Phantom Corpse case that preceded Detective Koshien) they have no idea of what happened in their past (Seiji from Moonlight Sonata and the murderer from the Optical Illusion case/Eye for an Eye were aware of their parentage. They were hiding that they were the children of a certain person—they avoided talking about their past, at all, pretty much). He could be lying, and his father's dog's reaction to him may explain how he was able to use the trick, but I think it's more likely that he really was abandoned, and while the dog remembers him, he doesn't remember the dog.

At this point, my money's on the novelist. I'd be very surprised if the writer did it, and even more if the mayor is revealed to be the culprit.
