Meanwhile, Kid prepares to escape to head for Aoko's party...
...only to have his only means of escape shot at and broken!
"Kaito's really late..."
Kid turns to confront the man who shot him on the rooftop, realizing it's the same voice as the one he heard on the phone the other night.
"It's been a long time, Kaitou Kid. No..."
"Toichi Kuroba!!"
Kid then realizes this man known as Snake is responsible for his father's death.
Failing to hand over the jewel to Snake and having no escape, Snake shoots Kid and he falls off the roof, allowing Snake to pick the jewel up from the floor.
Aoko puts on a happy face as the girls leave the party put becomes depressed of course once the door is shut.
Oh look, we found the plot! Snake's boss explains the tale of the Pandora jewel and how if the jewel is held up to moonlight as a certain comet passes overhead the jewel cries tears and that whoever drinks these tears gains immortality. ...Yes, this is what Magic Kaito's storyline revolves around. ...Yes, we realize this plot has more holes than Swiss cheese.
Boss man is ticked to discover the Blue Birthday in his hand is a fake created by Kid as the real Kid holds the real Blue Birthday up to the moonlight. Boss man and Snake are surprised to see Kid alive. Kid explains that the bullet hit the real jewel he was hiding in his breast pocket.

It slowly dawns on Kaito what's going on after Aoko mentions her birthday and decides to tease her a little.
"Aoko, are you sure you're not a guy?"
Aoko isn't amused and says that she won't invite Kaito to her party then. Kaito stops joking around and says he'll come to the party and promises Aoko a magic show, much to her delight.
Kaito asks what he should give her for a present, so Aoko says for him to capture Kaitou Kid.
Joking aside, Aoko wonders aloud to Kaito why Kid bothers stealing since he doesn't seem to have a certain goal in mind. She comes to the conclusion Kid steals because he thinks it's fun and loves to make a mockery of her father.
Kaito, unable to explain the truth to Aoko thinks about this on the way home, remarking that he isn't doing this for fun or to make fun of Nakamori. He won't stop being Kid until he gets some answers.
Aoko's party begins and Keiko asks Aoko where her husband is, much to Aoko's embarrassment.
Meanwhile, Nakamori explains his traps for tonight's heist to the museum director.
Nakamori used Thundershock! It's super effective!!
...Except of course it's not. Kid drills a hole in the ceiling and drops a rubber dummy into the cage. Nakamori and his men freak out, turn off the power and charge at Kid, allowing Kaito to disguise as a policeman and snatch the jewel with his teeth and escape.
Nakamori and the taskforce aren't too worried though since they purposely allowed Kid to steal the real jewel since they attached a transmitter to it in order to find Kid's hideout.

Back yet again for another Kid recap!
"The Blue Birthday of Fate" ("運命のブルーバースデー"/"Unmei no BURUU BAASUDEE")
Note: Based on "Blue Birthday" from Magic Kaito volume 3, chapter 6.
Overall I'll just get this out of the way that apart from the last 2 minutes or so of the episode, it's an extremely faithful adaptation of the original story, adding only a few extra little details here and there to flesh it out.
The story starts with Kid stealing a ring from a Egyptian exhibit at a museum...and no, the manga doesn't specify what on Earth the ring is he's stealing either.
Kid makes a comment about the police always falling for the dummy blimp trick before taking a better look at the ring he stole and remarks about how his next heist will go just as smoothly when suddenly a nearby pay phone rings.
Kid answers and receives an ominous message from a mysterious man on the other end regarding his heists and a certain jewel.
Meanwhile, Kaito sends out another warning message from Kid saying he'll be stealing India's largest sapphire, The Blue Birthday, for his next heist.
Aoko however, doesn't share in Kaito's amusement, upset that Kid is stealing away her father from her on her birthday. Kaito doesn't help matters by calling Nakamori a lousy detective.
MOP TO THE HEAD!

Uber sketch. Source of text comes from a Chinese site.
http://m.hkgolden.com/view.aspx?message=3352434&type=AN
There's so much Chinese characters crossed with Japanese it's no wonder you were confused, but until I see an actual official website with this info (written in proper Japanese no less), it's totally and completely 100% fake.

There's no link of Episode 17 under the "Studio" tab. The latest podcast link is the one you posted about 4 weeks ago: Episode 16 (not sure if you're aware of that). Just thought I'd let you know.
Nice episode though! (found link to Episode 17 on one of your statuses)
Maurice is the one who updates the Studio when he has the time to do so. It takes about a week or more before it's added to that section.
Glad you enjoyed the episode!

As the girls walk back to class, Keiko explains that she's envious of Aoko having someone she wants to give chocolate to before commenting that all the boys seem to be focused on one transfer student girl in particular.
Cue Akako surrounded by a flood of guys, just like the original manga.
Kaito strolls back to class and there's a minor difference. In the manga Aoyama draws a picture of each of the girls Kaito mentions, but this version just shows his massive chocolate collection as he lists off the girls' names.
"Hey Akako-chan! Give one to me too!"
Kaito, it's Valentine's Day, not Halloween. You don't just ASK for chocolate.
Akako not amused by the amount of chocolate Kaito's holding slaps him, causing him to drop the chocolates to the floor.
"If you want a chocolate from me, you'll have to throw away all those ones first!"
The boys back up Akako's statement, calling Kaito rude.
"Then..."
"I don't want it!"
The teacher then decides she's had enough of this BS and calls the class back to order as Akako slowly realizes that because the only person who can resist her is Kid and Kaito resisted her, that the two must be the same person.
As classes end, Kaito realizes he's missing his handkerchief and Akako begins her plan.
It is at this point the anime stops being based on "The Scarlet Temptress" and switches over to "Would You Grow Up" from volume 2.
An interesting addition to the anime is the inclusion of portraits of supposedly the long line of red magic witches Akako is descended from.
She summons Lucifer and asks how Kid will meet his end. Lucifer gives a little bit of knowledge to Akako before asking her who she thinks she is to boss him around. In response, Akako tears up the summon seal and receives a powerful amulet/necklace from her assistant to aid her in her plan.
Another anime inclusion is Aoko pondering what on Earth to do with her chocolate.
"In the end, I wasn't able to give this to him today. Now what?"

Back as always! Supposedly we'll get a few more MK specials before the year is up. I'm all for it!
"The Witch That Doesn't Shed Tears" ("魔女は涙をこぼさない"/"Majo wa namida o kobosanai")
Note: Based on "The Scarlet Temptress" from Magic Kaito volume 1, chapter 6 AND "Would You Grow Up" from Magic Kaito volume 2, chapter 5.
"Oh mirror, mirror, who is the most wonderful in the world?"
Cue ridiculously high-pitch voice.
"That would be you, Akako-sama."
Was not expecting the mirror to have an high-pitched voice since the original manga's text seems...dark and brooding, but okay then!
The mirror explains how every man bows to her every whim...except for one, which upsets her. I cannot begin to imagine why...
Of course, it's Kid.
Our first diversion from the manga is that apparently this isn't the first time the mirror has told Akako this response. Her assistant walks in to inform her that he still hasn't been able to figure out Kid's identity, but Akako tells him to forget about it, since apparently she figured it out.
The mirror image then goes from Kid to Kaito. Akako clearly isn't amused as the scene fades to reveal how Akako figured this information out a month ago, on Valentine's Day.
The hallways are bustling with activity as girls give chocolates to the boys they care about as Aoko talks to Kaito by the shoe lockers. Aoko is attempting to skirt around her dilemma of giving a chocolate to Kaito.
"Say, Kaito, do you like sweet things?"
"Sweet things?"
"You know, something like chocolate?"
Kaito however, just like in the manga, thinks she only wants to do this in order to poke fun at the fact he had gotten a cavity fairly recently and she had taunted him then. That said, Kaito says he won't give her the opportunity to poke fun at him again.
"What are you talking about? You know today's February 14th, right? All the girls are giving chocolate to boys."
Aoko then continues her explanation, saying how she thought someone like Kaito might not receive anything today so she was going to give him a chocolate out of pity. (Haha, yeah right.)
Unfortunately, upon realizing that, yeah, today IS February 14th, Kaito ran off to get chocolate from other girls, leaving Aoko holding a chocolate out to Keiko. Keiko explains how Kaito ran off before teasing Aoko a little bit, asking if she was going to give the chocolate to Kaito.

From what I've heard so far, the podcasts are very good! I've only heard 0 and 1 though, so I don't have much to go on. But that's my fault (kind of). To begin with, my headphones only had sound coming out of one side, so I could only listen to 0, since only CarpetCrawler talked there. I borrowed my Dad's for Episode 1, so I could hear out of both sides and listen to the playful banter, and I've downloaded 2 to listen to whenever I find time.
So I only have one thing to say: Keep up the good work (and the American accents)!
Shouldn't be that difficult to do...we're all American! lol

You just managed to make the majority of forum members feel bad about themselves.
You just managed to make those who just follow the anime/manga online without having as much as seen any authentic merchandise feel especially bad about themselves.
xD.
With some unavoidable jealousy, I have to admit that your collection is quite impressive. You're really quite devoted to have bought pretty much everything that's available to you.
Sorry about that. ^^; Some is due to my curiosity (all of the Special manga for example), but for the main manga it's so I don't feel guilty reading the scanlations since I physically own the books. (And then buy the English so I can actually read them and see how they translated it. xD;; ) I'm a huge fan of animation in general, so I really love stuff like the artbook and those movie guidebooks because you can see behind the scenes and get more in depth info (assuming you can read Japanese, lol).
As for D Conan's question...
*think* Probably over $2000 US. HOWEVER! This collection was built up over a looooooong amount of time. I've been into Conan since around 2004. Majority of what I buy now is ordering the manga volumes as CDJapan tells me when they're available. Only occasionally do I splurge on buying super expensive things. (Like the Lost Ship in the Sky bluray.) I also buy in lot form when possible; I look at Yahoo.co.jp auctions and only choose the auctions that have a lot of stuff in them. Shoppingmalljapan does an import service fee of at least $6, no matter how cheap the auction is. (i.e. I could see a Mune ga DOKIDOKI CD and possibly get it for only 50 yen, but I'd still have to pay $6 on the import fee. Ick!) So pretty much all the CDs I own came from lots that had a ton of CDs. (This is why I own duplicates of a few CDs; I just didn't include them in the pictures.)
The majority of the manga was bought in bulk for $6 each at an anime convention I attended and purchased them from Sasuga Booksellers, who, unfortunately, are out of business now. The artbook also came from them. Trivia for you: I've actually shown Jerry Jewell (Shinichi's English voice actor) a good amount of my manga collection. I happened to have the bag from Sasuga still with me when I attended a panel he was at.
1-35 of the Special manga was bought in a lot (see earlier explanation) from Yahoo.co.jp. I got a pretty decent price on them for buying all that was available at that time, but not going to lie, the shipping cost was murder. xD;; Later bought Special 36 through Yesasia.
DVDs were bought either when they were originally first released at a video store (remember when you paid $28 or so for only 3 episodes??) or bought used through Amazon.com.
Reference books I bought from a Japanese seller I trust on eBay specializing in anime/manga books. He'll take lower priced offers so I've managed to get a few books from him cheaper than his original listing price.
...Mmm, I guess that's about it. If anyone has any further questions or wants me to walk them through using stuff like shoppingmalljapan, just let me know!

Delon finally arrives upon hearing Anne scream that Kid is there. Anne says Kid escaped through the window and like the manga, Delon shoots the blimp down, which frightens Kid a bit who's still hiding in the room.
Like in the manga, Kid is spotted by Delon by a flash of light reflecting off the Sun of Paris, and Delon shoots him in the chest, luckily hitting the gem. Kid then fools Delon by placing LEDs throughout the room to disguise which light is actually from the Sun of Paris. Unfortunately for Kid, Delon remembers something unusual about the Sun of Paris: it reflects light in a cross-pattern. Delon chases and fires at Kid...out the window.
"Moron."
Kid asks for Princess Anne to hide herself briefly as he wraps things up. Anne realizes she probably won't see Kid again, and unlike her manga counterpart, she kisses him on the cheek.
Kid then disguises himself as Princess Anne and uses the disguise to escape with the diamond without suspicion...only Nakamori has caught on and asks why Belmonde isn't with her.
The remainder of the episode plays out pretty much as it does in the original with the exception being the inclusion of Kaito meeting up with Aoko and being relieved Aoko is happy again.
Overall a very enjoyable episode adaptation and lots of great expressions. :3
Here's hoping I'll see you next year with another Kid special!

Now let's get back on track with the manga chapter. One of the guards is tied up in the bathroom missing his clothes and tells Nakamori and Delon that Kid disguised himself and went back into the party. The policemen leave as Kaito reveals himself to be the victim in the bathroom. Kaito then disguises himself as a policeman and tells the other policemen that under Delon's orders they're all supposed to meet back in the main party room. Nakamori realizes it's strange that there's so many policemen and he suddenly remembers what Kaito told him about Kid being a magician and how the redirection trick worked, so he quickly heads up to where Princess Anne is. Kaito then disguises himself as Delon to remove the remaining guards from in front of Princess Anne's room. Unlike the manga however, he tells the guards that Kid has disguised himself as Nakamori.
Cut back to the princess being bored out of her mind because she can't attend her own party. She then wonders if Kid will actually even show up. The door creaks open so Anne goes to check it out and is surprised that there's no guards at all in front of her door.
"White, huh?"
Kid introduces himself and does a magic trick for Anne, much to her delight.
Meanwhile, Delon is just now understanding the gravity of his situation for underestimating Kid. A policeman shouts they caught Kid...revealing a tied up Nakamori. Delon just yells at Nakamori for wasting his time, again. Another policeman comments that's it's weird that Kid is disguised as Nakamori since they saw Delon earlier. Delon then realizes that Kid is upstairs with Anne.
...Ladies and the gentlemen, I give you the original Kaitou Kid fangirl. Originally in the manga she was just bored out of her mind and even wanted to play Othello with him...now she runs a Kid fan site?!
Meanwhile, Delon and the policemen have somehow shoved themselves all onto the elevator to head up to Anne's room.
Kid asks for the Sun of Paris and Anne explains that it was entrusted to her by her father. Like in the manga, Kid explains he simply needs to borrow it for a short time and that it will be returned, requesting that Anne believe in him since "thieves don't like to lie". Belmonde then meows as he rubs against Kid's leg, much to Anne's surprise since Belmonde doesn't usually like anyone other than her. Anne explains that Belmonde is her best friend and that they go everywhere together, causing Kid to pause in thought before asking Anne for her help in performing magic. It's worth noting that in the manga Belmonde doesn't seem to like Kid.

Back as promised and with even more caps than before! o_o;;
"Her Highness Loves Magic" ("王女様はマジックがお好き"/"Ōjo-sama wa MAJIKKU ga o suki")
Note: Based on "The Police Are Everywhere!" from Magic Kaito volume 1, chapter 2.
...Oh COME ON. I'm not even 26 seconds into the actual main part of the episode and you all show up?!
In the manga, Nakamori appears after the shots are fired at Belmonde. In the anime, he's right there with the cat. xD;;
And here's our first look at Inspector Delon...as really cool background music plays. His opening scene and challenge to Kid goes roughly the same as the manga.
Ah...another sign of modernization. Instead of finding out about the challenge to Kid in the newspaper, Kaito reads about the challenge on his cellphone. His reaction to the challenge draws attention, so the teacher yells at him about how cell phones aren't allowed during classtime. Aoko tells Kaito it was a stupid thing to do and says he was probably looking at a picture of the princess. Aoko then explains how her father's been down lately and will probably be taken off the Kid case if he fails to capture Kid again.
Kaito teases Aoko about how her father is a bumbling cop, causing the two to insult eachother ("Bakaito", "Ahoko"). ...That poor teacher.
On his way back from school, Kaito comes across Nakamori on the riverbank and talks to him. Nakamori is frustrated with himself and his inability to capture kid and is worried about Inspector Delon stopping Kid instead of him. Nakamori then apologizes for bothering Kaito with his story and asks for Kaito to show him a magic trick, since Aoko is always telling him about the tricks Kaito can do.
Kaito agrees and shows Nakamori a card trick. The trick goes a bit more in depth in the animation than the manga, but the end result is the same. Kaito tells Nakamori about how he used redirection to draw Nakamori's attention to one spot while he was secretly preparing cards with his other hand. (Hey, wait a minute Kaito, you're not supposed to reveal magic tricks!) Strangely enough, Kaito is the one who points out the fact Kid is a magician as well rather than Nakamori coming to that realization himself in the manga. Kaito reminds Nakamori that magic isn't real and that there's always an explanation for everything.
Here's where things really diverge from the manga: Kaito attends the party alongside Nakamori and Aoko instead of showing up by himself disguised as an old (perverted) Count. Nakamori asks Kaito to go to Princess Anne's party with him to assist him against Delon and Kid. Kaito is surprised and realizes that helping Nakamori would help cheer Aoko up as well.
...Borrowing fashion sense, Kaito?
"Why are you here, Aoko?" Fair question, Kaito, but we're reeeeallly going a different direction than the manga. Aoko explains she's there obviously because she was worried about her father.
And yes, a majority of the visitors hope to impress the princess with their magic tricks. (...So why the heck are you all here?)
Appropriate to the original title of the chapter, there truly are policemen everywhere. Delon confronts Nakamori as Kaito excuses himself to the toilet. Much to Aoko's aggravation. Also, unlike the manga, Princess Anne actually is out and about wandering her party instead of being cooped up in her room, she even compliments Aoko as being cute.
A shout suddenly rings out that Kid is there. Delon mobilizes the policemen as Nakamori runs to track down kid...and poor Princess Anne is taken away to her room.

So...off to Tropical Land we go!
Both Aoko and Kaito's clothes have (thankfully) been updated. Although I must admit, I do kinda miss seeing Kaito in the retro 80s crazy patterned shirt he had in the original. ...A little. Kaito and Aoko's date follows the same course it does in the original. Complete with Kaito acting like a jerk until Aoko finally starts acting like her usual self again.
Heist time! Instead of the totally not-copyright infringing Captain E.T. (think E.T. + Captain E.O.) we get a 3D Kamen Yaiba movie with basically the same plot twists. But we're not interested in that. HEIST!
Unlike the original chapter, Kaito is shown getting to the heist via.....THE JII MOBILE. ...Okay, so just a car that Jii drives, but whatever. Note to Kaito: Changing into your Kid outfit while Jii's driving and you're not wearing a seatbelt may shorten your life. Just saying.
The heist itself goes the same, until we get to where Kid diguises himself as Aoko in the original chapter.
The animation has him go through quite a few faces before making this scene even more AWKWARD than the original by having the cops blush at the sight of Kid disguised as Aoko.
Okay, so I'll try to wrap things up.
Kaito and Jii use the car to head back to Tropical Land, but it breaks down. Kaito suggests using the hang-glider, but Jii says it'd be impossible. So...like the original chapter, Kaito hitches a ride on the SIDE of the Dragon Coaster to get back to the theater and crash through the roof, granted a bit more suave than the original version while doing so. ^^;
And we end with the ice cream scene. ♥
"You're so cold, just like ice cream."
"But..."
"...ice cream can be sweet too."
Overall, an awesome episode. Also, don't blink, or you just might miss a few things...
"Next Kid's Magic!" "A cat!"
See you all next time for "Her Highness Loves Magic" based on Magic Kaito volume 1, chapter 2. :3
Don't Wanna Lie, I want that Kid puppet.

Another Kid chapter animated, another reason for me to make a topic like last time. This topic is to compare what is the same and what is different between the original Magic Kaito chapter and the TV version.
So, without further delay...
"Kaitou Kid's Busy Date" ("怪盗キッドの忙しいデート"/"Kaitou Kid no isogashii DEETO")
Note: Based on "Kaitou Kid's Busy Holiday" from Magic Kaito volume 1, chapter 4.
The episode opens up with a recap of the previous special...not much else to say except that the instrumental jazzy end tune from the first special (which I suppose we can say is the Magic Kaito main theme) returns during the recap. Nice, considering since this is a Conan broadcast on YTV, so we won't hear it again. (Unless Animax decides to air the Kid specials on their own again, outside of being forced to have Conan opening and ending themes.)
But hey, we still get all new music throughout the whole episode. WOOHOO! Kaito even managed to get his own "Conan title card" music cue. Instead of the usual score we get a jazz organ cue. Niiice.
Well this certainly wasn't in the original. Kaito threatens Jii with the card gun and demands to know why Toichi was the Kaitou Kid, stole jewels, and why he died. Jii stumbles over his words before glancing over at a picture of Chikage, Toichi, and a young Kaito. Kaito, following his gaze realizes whatever the reason Jii won't say anything must involve his mother somehow. (Hoo? Are we adding hints regarding a certain Phantom Lady, animation staff?) Kaito recalls that his mother on the video he saw in the first special that Chikage mentioned Kaito would probably become very busy very soon. Kaito gives up his line of questioning and figures he'll get the answers eventually by continuing to be Kid.
Believe it or not, the hang-glider cape is actually making an early appearance. Kid didn't start using it until volume 2, chapter 4. To be fair, I suppose the animation staff must feel the viewers have gotten so used to seeing Kid with it that'd it be jarring to see him use the odd mechanical devices and rocket-powered items he originally used in the early chapters.
This is where the actual chapter in Magic Kaito begins. The animation staff really have to do a lot of work adapting these Magic Kaito chapters. In the actual story, Kid's face is seen by Nakamori on page 3 as Kid is trying to steal the Angel Crown. He drops the crown and flees before Nakamori can catch him, but not before leaving a new warning message ON NAKAMORI'S BACK saying he'll return for the crown. In the animated version, Kid successfully steals the Angel Crown and is only seen by Nakamori when he tries making his escape off the rooftop using the glider (around 7 minutes into the episode). An odd wind caught him, so he was unable to get out of the light in time. This wind also causes Kid to fall quite ungracefully off the building, supposedly landing in a tree, and then fleeing via the sewer (ick) but not before leaving a new warning message saying he'll return for the crown.
Aoko's request for a date from Kaito goes as it does in the manga...oh hey there, Keiko! There was a pigtailed-girl in the original chapter, but given the lack of glasses, it might not have been Keiko, but this time around it's pretty obvious. The scene with Aoko and Ginzo goes the same as well.
Kaito apparently pissing off a bunch of his girl classmates. Not sure where he stole the lock from (no subtitles = can't understand), but it probably involves Kaito being a pervert...as usual. EDIT: It helps if I don't do comparisons at 1 AM. This is the lock scene from the chapter where the girls get angry at Kaito for peeking at them in the locker room. Kaito argues they should've have used such an easy lock. Yay for pervy Kaito! ...I think.

In the case of my massive volume collection (I own all plus all of DC Special) it's the result of quite a few years. I was lucky enough to be able to buy 1-50 something (and all of Magic Kaito) over two years at Katsucon, before Sasuga Booksellers closed down. They used to have a booth at the con selling the books for about $5-$6 each. Best part of course was not needing to worry about shipping.
The remainder I've either bought via YesAsia and more recently CDJapan. DC Special volumes 1-25 came from a yahoo.co.jp auction and volume 36 from CDJapan.
Personally I can't imagine putting anything inside of the volumes without damaging them somehow; everything you use will definitely leave a mark.

Ticked, Boss man destroys the fake Blue Birthday as Kid throws the real jewel ala a baseball smack into the Boss's face and then explains how the real jewel has a police transmitter on it.
"WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I----", oh sorry, wrong show. Kid then loudly proclaims that he won't stop until he finds Pandora before Snake and the others do and destroys it.
The police arrive, Kid and the others split. Nakamori recovers the real jewel. Woo.
"LET'S PARTY!" = "LET'S GET DRUNK!!"
Realizing he only has a few minutes before midnight and the end of Aoko's birthday, Kaito, still dressed in his Kid outfit, scrambles around the city before getting a bit of inspiration while looking at buildings.
Kaito calls Aoko only to have her, of course, shout at him and cry from frustration and worry.
Luckily, Kaito manages to convince Aoko to look outside the window.
Allowing Kaito to give Aoko a really cool one-of-a-kind magic show/birthday present. ...That wakes up the whole neighborhood. ...Including a certain little detective.
Meanwhile...
"Blue Birthday...Isn't someone's birthday today...?"
Now for the completely original section of this episode and it's a doozy. Ladies and gentlemen, it looks like we're heading for an anime original plot!
Snake's boss seems to be answering to a bigger boss judging from what I'm assuming is an apology video chat for screwing up royally. MK-Anokata seems to be based somewhere in America (anyone recognize the skyline? Chicago or New York maybe?) and makes a note to contact another member known as Spider, hinted at being the world famous illusionist, Guner von Goldberg II. (EDIT: Probably an misspelling and should be "Günter" (ギュンター = GYUNTAA) based on the Japanese subtitles on the screen.)
And so ends yet another Kid special. Until next time!
