Subs are out...
Ran and Conan's ages were stated as 16 and 6, just something little, but that matches the manga. Only thing I really "missed" by not having subs, seeing as how most of the special is a pretty faithful adaptation of the manga, or a criss-cross between anime/manga canon.
Still really enjoyed watching it for the second time. Subs are very well done too, which helps.

We should see a sub sometime today. It's being done. Doubt that Crunchyroll will touch it at all though.
I was able to understand a good portion without subs, but I'd just wait.

With Detective Conan - Episode One - Chiisaku Natta Meitantei aired this morning. How did you like it? Hate it?
Episode One is supposedly supervised or written by Gosho Aoyama, but I'd be curious as to how much he was involved.
It's more along the lines of a re-imagining of the first episode than it is a remake, and features a lot of recap scenes from future episodes, anime original scenes, as well as a new character introduction, before the TV anime got to it anyways...
I felt like this special was good for what it was, primarily being a treat for long-time fans. I wasn't disappointed, and my major grievance with this special was that it felt a little too convoluted at times, and we didn't need an introduction for certain characters that appeared in this special. Some of them contradicted canon, and others didn't make any sense for them to be here anyways. I think it would have been perfect if this could have served as an actual introduction to the series, but I couldn't even recommend it in that manner. Thankfully, it doesn't really spoil that much.
Highlights of the film:
SpoilerI liked how the special started with Shiho examining her lab rats, and discovering that one had shrunk instead of died from testing APTX4869. I like that it ended with her discovering Shinichi's grade-school clothes had gone missing, and her changing the data in her computer to read as deceased. That was a good way to start and wrap things up.
Hina, despite her not having appeared in the UFO case, and that case having not been animated, actually led to one of my favorite scenes in this special. Her intro and the Karate tournament with Ran was a spectacle to watch, and it was sensible, compared to some of the other scenes we had.
Contradicting that, I don't think we should have got a shot of the Detective Boys, and if we did, I don't think they should have run into Shinichi/Ran, and him giving an impression on the kids. I think this is contradictory, since they didn't recognize him from the Desperate Revival arc.
Korn and Chianti was okay for me, but their appearance was just somewhat confusing, since I don't think they needed to be there. Funny moment there though, so some decent comic relief and was kind of surprised.
I liked the introduction with Gin, Vodka, and the other man at the bar. Gave us a pretty good impression on Gin and Vodka before he whacked Shinichi and gave him some glares during the investigation.
No big beam of light either. Decapitation was surprisingly bloody... and uncensored. Glad they went with this, though some part of me was hoping that we'd get a return to that monstrosity. Can't all be winners I guess...
Did anyone hate it? Despite some problems, I can't see this being a turn off for any fan of the series.

Didn't feel strongly towards 840... Though I will bring up that Crunchyroll, for some reason, either forgot or didn't upload the episode in 720 or 1080. Confirmed that it's not just me in the comments, but I hope it's not a recurring theme. I do pretty much pay to have a subscription to watch Detective Conan, so I'd like to have those options

Been finding this season pretty lackluster, though I haven't had time to check out some of the shows I've wanted to get around to.
Been watching 3 gatsu no Lion, Drifters, Flip Flappers, Keijo!!!!!!!!, Bungo Stray Dogs, Occultic Nine, Trickster, Magical Girl Raising Project, and To Be Hero, and came out rather conflicted about most of it.
Oddly, Flip Flappers is my favorite of the season. It's just a series I really like to watch, if only for the animation and color palette. It reminds me of something GAINAX would do, and I've always enjoyed their work, animation wise. The setting and concept is also intriguing enough and fun enough to keep up with, which is much more that can be said about the other shows this season.
Bungo Stray Dogs has been a lot better so far than its first season. I absolutely hated the constant comedic switches in the first season, and the tone just sort of ruined it for me, in what would have otherwise been a pretty solid show. The second season started off a lot better, and I hope it continues on the same path.
I've left Ajin out of the mix for now. I'm saving it for when its complete (and hopefully finished with no season 3?) to binge at the end of the season. I'll find time to watch it, but I have yet to touch it so far.
Occultic;Nine has me rather conflicted, mostly because the first couple episodes were so all over the place, and some of the decisions made with this anime really do confuse me, and some of them I can't even begin to comprehend... Anyways, the supernatural element is starting to pick up, and I think that this series can still turn around for me. It started off terrible, but it is getting better, at least I think.
For now I've dropped Trickster, since I was compelled to check it out based on title alone. Definitely wasn't what I was expecting, and very much doubt I'll finish it.
Drifters reminds me a lot of Hellsing, and I never found the time to really finish Ultimate, nor did I enjoy what I had watched that much. It seems like a series just to follow for fun, and I won't say it's bad or anything. It's got a very good concept behind it, but... I just don't really care that much. It's just struck me as pretty average so far, which is a let down as I had really high expectations for this series.
The new Madoka like magical girl anime is okay (though I don't know if that's a fitting comparison?), but I've never really particularly been into magical girl anime, or found Madoka to be the amazing series everyone says it is, so maybe I'm not enjoying it as much as I could be. I'm not a huge fan of the presentation and it seems like its trying a little hard to be that dark kind of series.
I haven't felt strongly about March Comes in like a Lion, maybe because I haven't caught up with it yet, and still need to watch a couple more episodes. Everyone says the manga is really good, so I am looking forward to it, but it's done nothing for me yet... Art style is pretty neat though, and it's a nice change of pace.
To Be Hero has actually been much better than what I expected. I like potty humor, and To Be Hero does this well, literally, or at least I think so.
Keijo was something I was hoping would be funny in a different context, but can't say I'm really a fan. Tried the English dub, but the character voices were even more annoying and the dub for me couldn't save it. I will say that beyond being some random ecchi show, it's got the Shonen sports genre down pretty well... Still not really worth the watch though.
I can't remember if I posted anything about summer, though, but it was a pretty hit or miss season for me. Re:Zero, Mob Psycho 100, 91 Days,Tales of Zestiria, ReLife, Amaama to Inazuma, and Alderamin all held my attention reasonably well, and many others just really disappointed me (Rewrite, Berserk, Orange, New Game, Qualidea Code). Strangely enough, the only show I dropped in summer was Handa-kun.
Winter 2017 looks to be a good start to the new year, if only for a couple anime series I've been looking forward to (cough Konosuba S2).
A bit off-topic, but wrapped up Tora Dora, which was a romance anime I somewhat enjoyed as a whole, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, which left me very pleasantly surprised, seeing as how I didn't think I'd like it more than the original adaptation, and I've been enjoying what little of Slayers I've watched. Gintama also holding up pretty well after 150 episodes. Looking forward to finishing it, but I'm taking my time.

Yea, last couple episodes were very typical, and 840 looks like more of the same.
I'm hoping we'll end the year with the Department store case, but dunno if the anime is going to get there. It would seem like a wasted opportunity if we had to wait until January for the case.
"Episode One" airs on December 9th, but I highly doubt that Crunchyroll will sub it. I'm really looking forward to watching that episode though, even if I have to do it while it's raw.
Also, for some reason, I'm just wanting a DB anime original now. The Kogoro/Ran/Conan AOs haven't been doing much for me lately.

Been kept a little busy, but really enjoyed the last part of the Zombie case. Looking forward to the next part within the hour. Renewed my subscription to Crunchyroll, or sort of... since they gave me a free 7 day trial while they try to work out my payment method. Took like 5 tickets for Crunchyroll support to even understand my issue, when it was incredibly straight-forward. Their solution apparently was that I either wait for them to fix it (which has been about 3 weeks now and it still isn't) or for me to delete my account and start fresh... I had somewhat of an issue before with them, which is why I stopped using their services for about 3 months. I'd like to continue using Crunchyroll, but they are giving me pretty much every reason not to at this point.
Anyways, with the rant out of the way, I really liked 831. I thought it was a good adaptation of the chapter, though certain things in the manga were captured a bit better.

Ran, outside of ‘do not cross’ police line says it’s all because Sera said ’she’s a type that’s killed first’, and Sonoko answers ’no, I think it’s this brat in glasses called for death...’
Inside Takagi and Megure are getting information from the salesperson, [previous customer]’s subordinate, and a customer with a claim. There were 4~5 people more in store, but they returned as soon as they heard about the murder.
Upon watching at [previous customer]’s both hands, they realize that her left hand, pointing at left dressing cabin, shows '2’ in eastern sign system and a 'gun’. Her right hand grasped tightly with her thumb smeared in a lipstick, but this doesn’t say anything.
While Megure inquires everybody in separate rooms, Sera said that Conan was a witness to what happened prior to the tragedy and joins the investigation.
The customer with a claim said that she saw white sandal left in the dressing room to the right. It doesn’t belong to anyone from the suspects, but their descriptions match (lit: even if they were asked to draw a picture, the shape matches).
Salesperson said that a week ago she served [previous customer], but [previous customer] was not able to remember her, maybe, says she, because she’s easy to forget.
Then Megure asked [previous customer]’s henchwoman whether she helped her with trying clothes on, but she denied it, saying ’I’m not a servant, that’s just clothes, no necessity in that, right?’
When they asked a customer with a claim when did customer with white sandals left, she answered the exact time: between 2:43-2:44 PM.
In the right dressing room, that was not used not by [previous customer] nor by her henchwoman because of the recent dog allergy faint accident, beige portable slippers are found. She asnwered that she wanted to go to the China, thus she has it.
While Megure was watching at the pictures of a white sandal three suspects drew, Takagi returns from the forensics with a discovery.

Sera and Conan find out how the criminal found a way to the middle dressing room. With a face cover (a thing used in Japan’s fitting rooms, to prevent dirtying clothes with make up), left by Sonoko?

Yep, pretty bland case, and really stretched out... but I thought the ending bits were a bit unique for an AO and I certainly appreciated it.
Cut that out though and it's nothing special.
Well, we're on break for two more weeks and then, oddly, we are starting with the Zombie case!
Much more excited for that anime adaptation than the Shin/Ran flashback, but I really wish they'd get to it already, since it almost seems like they may actually gloss over it.

Good episode, and good anime adaptation to boot. Not much to complain about. I'm actually surprised they didn't censor Takagi and Sato's conversation, since they've done it for less in the past.
Always enjoy the end bits too. Can always hope for the best when it comes to AOs, but probably nothing much for the next couple weeks. Hopefully they get to the flashback case after the remaster. It would make perfect sense for them to do so. Surprised we haven't got an announcement yet.

Pretty faithful adaptation! Though I have to say this one wasn't exactly my favorite case of last year, it's still not really a bad one either.
I'm still a little annoyed from this moment... seeing as how they overtly suggested Shuukichi was an Akai and immediately skirted it (when it would have been an opportune time, if any, to reveal such a detail). Not to mention it wasn't exactly an exciting mystery, or much of a "mystery" in the first place.
Then of course it was revealed in the marriage registration form anyways in the manga, and I wasn't really a fan of this since it's not a direct reveal, so we still have to get to it, and was only really readable after it had been enhanced and zoomed...
Anyways, looking forward to part 2!

Hmm, not much to really say at this point...
Hyoue Kuroda - There's a part of me that wonders if Kuroda is going to be actually impactful to the plot, or if he's just another police member who seems to know about Conan's intelligence. He was first introduced with the Nagano police, and it's not as if Kansuke (especially him in particular), Yui and Komei haven't noticed his intelligence as well.
It would seem to me that he was pretty much set up as the overly suspicious character the moment he was introduced so that he can be considered a Rum suspect, since his character introduction was not far off from the moment Haibara mentioned Rum having an artificial eye, and Rum's intro speech at the end of Scarlet... but I think he's definitely too suspicious to be Rum, and after the Blog case/Yoko Higo follow up, I think there is next to no chance that this could even be the case.
That being said, I do think that his memory loss may come up as some form of plot point in the future, or that might have to do with Haibara not sensing him being part of the organization, or him not recognizing Shiho in her child-like state. I think this is a stretch at best, but I can't say I'd really be against it either. It'd be a change from the norm, and I doubt there are many people that actually think Kuroda is Rum.
I think it was DCA who pointed it out in another thread, but Haibara didn't sense Bourbon/Vermouth in the Cherry Blossom Case with Jodie. I'm not sure if this was a mistake on Gosho's part or is supposed to imply something, but every other time, after the introduction of this "mechanic" or whatever you want to call it (Mysterious Passenger), she has sensed "something"... That is, aside from Numabuchi's debut, where she offers the explanation that she might not have sensed it because she is starting to live a normal life.
Perhaps she can't sense Kuroda for similar reasons, but again, kinda just grasping at straws to make some sense out of it.
The rest...
Sakurako Yonehara - I really don't think Yonehara will have much, if any importance to the story. I'm not even sure I'd mark her as suspicious, though it is odd that we'd have a character like her latch onto Conan's double personality for no reason at all. After a couple more appearances from her, and some backstory in the Yumi/Shuukichi case, I don't think she is really suspicious, or that she will serve anything but some type of connection between the Tokyo MPD characters, and might exist now for the sake of Chiba/Naeko's romance. I've seen the suggestion brought up that she has some type of connection to Rum, but I don't see it, or that she might be the Araide of the Rum arc.
Wakasa Rumi - My personal thoughts on the character are a bit conflicted, and I'm certainly a bit annoyed with her, and how Gosho is presenting us with another potential Rum suspect. The name itself is silly, and pretty much so suspicious that it's not really that suspicious... and her having this fake Eisuke-like persona also strikes me as unnecessary, since it's basically revealed to be a hoax in the end chapter. While the whole fight scene didn't come off as bad as I thought it would, I'm still not pleased with it, and introducing all these characters, be it some martial art, or just that they are capable of beating up the villains doesn't really sit well with me. It's got out of hand over the years.
I really have no clue what this character's purpose is. Potential spy, maybe? MI6? I don't think so, since I'm kinda betting on Mary for that specifically... but can't really see the link to some of the newer agencies that were introduced as well, be it PSB or NPA. Not sure what her goal is either. Is it to simply investigate Conan? What's the point in that?
Aside from Kuroda, none of these characters really seem to match up well with Rum's description given by Haibara, which seemed to describe men specifically, but even more odd is that none of them seem to have this eye problem, which was the only thing consistent across the rumors. Are we supposed to ignore that and just treat everyone as a Rum suspect? I'm not sure how you can have such a defining trait and still pass this off as a successful mystery. Are we just going to get a slew of characters with a prosthetic eye? Surely that won't happen...
Asaka - I don't really have any particularly strong reasoning for it, but I don't necessarily think that Rum has to be Asaka based on the hint on the mirror. I think Conan and Akai coming to this conclusion seems a bit contrived, and the whole scenario just strikes me as odd. Wakasa Rumi could be Asaka but not Rum, but that might be too obvious given the name (but a perfect opportunity, since she could also easily have been the body-guard 17 years ago given her age, and the silhouette looks young... and she seems to have a similar hair-style as the vague photo presented to us)
Mary - Don't really see how she is going to be anything but an ally, but they've definitely tried to make her suspicious, with the copy of Gin's line, or Conan even contemplating about her fitting the description of Rum (but ignoring some of the more crucial details in the process). Probably won't see any more answers, or what exactly she means about Shinichi not being the same person 10 years ago until we see that fated flashback case (who knows when at this point). I think she will have some ties to MI6 given the British connections, the two mothers being sisters (assuming they are Elena and Mary), her light hair, foreign name, and her activities in the Romance novelist case (when analyzing Conan's listening device) and the Soul Detective Case where she shows extremely athletic capabilities.
I'm still a bit conflicted there since I don't think someone of her size should be able to do such a thing, but mostly because of her sickly state that was presented to us right from her debut. It just caught me completely off-guard... (even though I never really considered such a thing "impossible" since she is an Akai) - Conan initially found it impossible to catch the culprits with his child body, but I guess he isn't trained to the extent Mary has been so you can kinda accept it if you really want to...
Might add a bit more later. Nothing much to really say that already hasn't been.

Yea, kinda an obvious case since there wasn't really any other way to go with it, but the pacing and presentation was really good for a one part AO. Definitely one of the better mystery cases we've had in awhile, and there really wasn't any gimmicks to try and sell it either.
Definitely looking forward to next week's case!

Lately? The past nine years or even longer (there are some who'd say that DC should've ended with the Vermouth arc or not very long after) seems a bit too long of a period to use "lately." I also believe the same people would say the quality of the mysteries has declined as the arcs went on.
I don't find "clumsiness" in general to be annoying, but when Gosho has done it with Eisuke, yes, I did, and I didn't like it then, and I don't like it now with Rumi. I don't necessarily say it's "mean-spirited" not sure what you mean by that, but I'd say revealing it to be a hoax in the end, which happened both with Rumi and Eisuke make this persona seem even more annoying and unnecessary. Don't really need a good reason to like or hate something, I just do. For some, I understand that it brings a good brand of comic relief. Part of it being repetitive has to do with it too. There's only so long a gag can be interesting or funny.
Who knows what it is with Rumi in particular, but I think the point I was trying to make was she is good at fighting, and so far, I just feel that this "development" is rushed, and her "clumsy" personality seems pointless. I think it's a pretty safe assumption that Gosho isn't just going to give her some random, unknown fighting style. Does it really matter anyways? The point is the same. I assume the brawler comment was just the thoughts of the poster on 2ch, and not something in the file itself.
"Lately" is a fair point, though I was mostly referring to some recent events, such as Conan not explicitly knowing Akai was Sera's brother, when most of the community thought that was obvious before, same as with the whole MG thing being the shrunken mother, but this is fair seeing as how Conan never had the chance to discover it, it just makes everything feel even slower. Poor choice of words... and I would also agree that the qualities of mysteries in general have declined, but there are still some great ones from time to time...
I think a lot of that just has to do with the nature of the series. Stretch something out so long and people want to see something new, and everything in some way or another is going to look like a rehash. Most the time I just try to appreciate it for what it is and try not to be too critical. I think the Vermouth arc (at least so far) has been the easily identifiable peak of the series, but it has not in any way been bad after that. Kir arc, and Clash was pretty good as a whole, and Bourbon arc was just too long for all that happened. We're still dealing with some of the stuff from that arc too, some of it I've liked, and still don't really know how I feel about Sera or Mary yet... and I did like Scarlet... somewhat, but some of the recent cases elaborating on Scotch, Bourbon and Akai seem to have made it even worse...

No, it's really just coincidence. I'm not too bitter about the way things go most times. I think it's this case in particular that annoyed me, because I didn't expect Gosho to pace Rumi as this suspicious/mysterious character in such a manner. It was already obvious they were going to be used as a Rum suspect from 966. The clumsy act definitely doesn't help.
It's also pretty hard to follow this case as is, seeing as how I don't understand a lick of Japanese, but I don't really wanna complain about that. We get those cases from time to time, and I'm usually quite impressed with the cases, and still think Gosho has a lot of promise in him... though some of his decisions about the plot lately, I certainly disagree with.
A lot of it just has to do with her being this overly clumsy character, and then revealing it all to be an act in 968, and of course, we'll have the same shenanigans in future cases too. I don't think she is in the organization (she might have some link to it, or be from some certain spy agency), since Ai didn't sense anything, and I'm certain she would have, and neither Conan or Ai seem to really care (might be some follow-up though)
Introducing all these new characters with a martial art seems dumb to me, and it just loses its impact when you do it to this extent, and as far as your last part is concerned, that probably does have something to do with it... but I don't really mind if this gets on with the Rum plot as a whole. It's too early to get reallly frustrated about anything, but Gosho has certainly been stalling a lot lately, especially with all these overly convenient cases (even for DC standards). It's something I've grown to expect, but sometimes enough is enough.
Something I haven't been too fond of lately is certain things being very obvious to the reader, while Conan is still taking ages to figure it out. It makes it seem like things go much slower than they actually are, when I think the Rum arc will not be a repeat of the Bourbon arc (and I didn't really dislike it either, I just felt it lacked the same feel as what came before it)

Needless to say, not really a fan of this chapter and it just seems really dumb
I think my main problem is that I was expecting something different from Rumi, though I did entertain the possibility of her being plot relevant, or that she was even possibly one of the spies for the Rum arc (since we've had at least one new one since the Vermouth arc). Don't know her affiliation, but I don't really care either...
She doesn't look like a throwaway character, but her design isn't anything special either. It's mostly in the facial features, but notably different from one time case characters... Same could be said about Hina to some extent though I suppose... but her name is Rumi Wakasa, and from name alone, I think it was apparent that Gosho would either try to pass her off as a Rum suspect, or throw in some connection to the plot. It could, of course, been another "pointless" and "coincidental" connection to the plot, since we've had several very convenient cases in the last several months. That was a possibility as well...
Now it's pretty clear that Rumi will be passed off as a Rum suspect, but is she? Could it even be a possibility... Aside from one example after Ai mentioned her ability to "sense" members from the Organization (not counting the time with Numabuchi), she's always responded to a member that has a connection to the organization. It would be awful convenient if Gosho just ignored it when introducing someone this close to both Conan and Ai. There's been no indication so far, and I assume after said fight scene in this file, Ai would have some type of reaction (not mentioned in text spoilers).
She's been so close so far that she's had time to gather data on Conan, and seems to be wanting him to solve the Cipher for some reason. Not sure if it's just because she can't do it herself, or what her objective is.
The scene with the tranquilizer watch seemed really dumb to me, since he's not being cautious at all, just completely careless. It reminds me of the first time Kobayashi saw Conan reasoning, and he had to slow things down (once Ai mentioned it to him) to avoid her being suspicious... and she was suspicious. He doesn't seem to care at all in this case, and I blatantly telling someone about his watch capabilities could spell a world of trouble for him, especially if say Rumi was concerned that Conan had things he shouldn't... but never mind the logic. It's not really important anyways...
But more than anything, I suppose I'm irritated with this Eisuke like personality. She's overly clumsy, but it's just a hoax, and she's anything but. I can't remember whether or not Eisuke was pretending, since some of those trips were on purpose, according to him... but Eisuke annoyed me back when he was around, and Rumi will do the same here.
Giving every character a martial art tends to devalue characters for me, and doesn't really seem like a unique trait anymore either. I'm not thrilled with Mary already, since she shouldn't be able to do certain things because of her size/sickly state, but whatever...
Lastly... I think it could be pretty likely that Rumi does turn out to be "Asaka" - but again, I don't think that necessarily means that Rum = Asaka, and this seemed like a quick jump to conclusions, at least if this is what Conan thinks.

I just assume that it's something to do with the VAs for Eri, Yukiko and Yusaku, since they don't appear all that often, but it definitely should have been animated by now. Though the case is pretty "random", so not like they can't just throw it in anywhere. I did expect it to air while the ending was ongoing, but they are replacing the ending with Episode 827 for some reason.

Summer full of AOs is not a good summer
Hopefully it'll pick up. I have a feeling we are getting more AOs than we should be because there are "problems" with animating the Shin/Ran flashback. Already odd that we're getting the Ramen case before it.
Still, I kinda expected that we'd get the Zombie case around October, and the Department Store Case in December this year in the anime... or at least, that would be the "best" time to air said episodes.

Not a bad episode I suppose... pretty decent mystery for a one part AO, but they always have the worst delivery. It's usually far too obvious who the culprit is.
We don't get suicides that often, so agree with you there. Next episode does look a little promising, but not gonna hold my breath.
Switching to day shift has definitely put a hamper on things, but I'll be sure to relay my thoughts when I get home each Wednesday

I was kinda hoping for the Mystery Tour this month, since those AO episodes are usually somewhat decent. Dunno what's going on with them. Nice timing with the Department store case though.
